It looks as though the Labour Party is a bit spooked by the avalanche of submissions coming in against the Three Waters legislation:

The Labour Party is using its supporters’ mailing list to ask for help and to back its Three Waters proposals as submissions close on the legislation that will give effect to the key part of the reforms.

National’s local government spokesman Simon Watts is calling the move “desperate”, saying it shows Labour is worried the committee will be overwhelmed by submissions against the controversial scheme.

On Friday, Labour’s Campaigns Team sent an email to people on its mailing list – usually reserved for Labour Party fundraising and events – asking them to make a submission to Parliament’s Finance and Expenditure Committee on the Water Services Entities Bill, the main legislation that will give effect to Three Waters reforms.

“We’re taking the next steps on Three Waters – and we want to hear from you,” the email read.

The 250-word email contained three links to Parliament’s website where people can make a submission on the bill.

“Submissions close next Friday. Don’t miss your opportunity to have your say on this important reform,” read one link.

While it is not unprecedented for political parties to ask supporters to submit on legislation, it is fairly uncommon.

It would be hugely embarrassing to Labour is submissions to the Finance and Expenditure Committee were weighted heavily against Three Waters. So Labour is trying to motivate its base.

But the Taxpayers Union is doing it better. Go to the Stop Three Waters page – https://www.stopthreewaters.nz/ – and click on the red “Make a submission” button. From there, it’s dead easy, and you can customise your submission as it suits you. You can also choose whether to request to appear before the select committee, and you can ask committee members to get on the road and go to the provinces to hear submissions, rather than sit in Wellington and expect submitters to come to them; after all, this is supposedly about engaging communities!

Submissions close next Friday, so don’t wait; do it today. The Labour Party needs to hear than an overwhelming number of Kiwis oppose Three Waters.

      Xanax is a benzo and regarded as somewhat addictive. Ativan is a similar anti-anxiety drug. Basically worked over versions of valium. If there is a Xanax shortage in NZ it is presumably related to internationl supply

  Matt – when I look at New Zealand and our slide in every social indicator, I marvel at our Prime Minister whose main effort, whose main focus, is to get us to wear masks more! She reminds me of the police officer at Uvalde,in Texas, who while schoolchildren were being shot, calmly went over to the hand sanitiser to sanitise his hands. In both cases we have authority figures who are totally focused on minor things and ignoring the main thing.
  
  Here in New Zealand we are supposedly open for business, open for tourism and rebuilding our country after two years of covid and lockdowns. We need to get our borders open, we need to get our health sector working, we need to build thousands of houses, we need to sort out our education system where apparently something like 40% of children are not at school on any given day. Crime is out of control and we have shootings and ram raids almost on a daily basis.
  
  But where is the Prime Minister’s attention? She wants us to continue being a smug little hermit Kingdom at the bottom of the world, masking up, believing that will do anything to stop the spread of covid, while our country slides downwards on every conceivable social measure.
  As Mike Hosking said yesterday, maybe this is deliberate? Maybe she wants us to be scuttling around wearing masks, obeying her commands, living in fear, maybe that’s the vision? A frightened little socialist hermit Kingdom at the bottom of the world. Where we all become more equal all right. We all become equally miserable.
  
  For the love of all that is holy, can we please have a leader who will step up and offer a vision. A life-giving vision, a vision of prosperity and hope. Surely, surely, we can be better than this?!

    I have come to believe that the PM has no choice but to milk her management of the pandemic to the last drop as she tries to ensure a win in the next election.
    She has listened to her advisors for over 2 years, but I suspect that it has dawned on her that maybe, just maybe, she has been sold a pup.

      The trouble with the “milking the pandemic” strategy is that this isn’t 2020 anymore: the more time progresses, the more that either people understand the implications of the mountains of infection and vaccine data, and/or the more their own direct personal experience of Covid tells them that having the virus is an inconvenience at most, then the more the tide goes out on Ardern’s ability to distort reality and manipulate people for political gain. What goes up, always must come down, and this is true of the effects of political propaganda.

  It was a survey of expats not immigrants, which is entirely different.
  The former consider themselves temporary and the latter permanent.
  Thais, for example, immigrate to NZ & are never going to be part of a survey like this, but Kiwis in Thailand are ex pats.

    MCos, it is somewhat valid to make a distinction between immigrants and expats, but only to a point.
    
    There is still a massive overlap of concerns – particularly around cost of living and healthcare.
    
    Immigrants (well the right sort of immigrant anyway) are more concerned with a few things like employment opportunities and tend to be younger and more concerned about family stuff like schools.
    
    Unfortunately NZ is performing extremely poorly in those areas too.

      Yes totally agree. Let’s say you are posted to New Zealand with a young family. You are concerned about schools, the cost of feeding the family, the cost of transport, health care. New Zealand is now abysmal on all of those. You can add in crime.
      
      At least we still have fantastic geography with beautiful places to visit on the weekends. Until we cannot afford petrol. ☹️
      
      So yes it is a survey of expats, but it is a highly alarming result. So refude that Jacinda. 🤡

  Sri Lanka needs urgent changes. For example, I heard last night that it spend twice as much on its military as it does on public health and education combined.     $2 million? They just poison them, unless it’s a bond to charge against if they create damage. For the record, Mt Cook station is not on Mt Cook, infact it’s not even on the Glen Tanner road into Mt Cook, it’s next valley over and it happens to have a view of Mt Cook, the previous owner farmed that station till he was 99 years old, Mr Burnett, at one stage he had the record for a kilo of Merino wool of $200, and that was in the early 90s.

    Exactly right kowtow. The previous owner had been merrily claiming carbon credits for the pines that were naturally spreading and displacing the farming activities on the station. Money for nothing, with jam. But apparently they were not the useless weed type (pinus contorta Ithink) so he may not have become a pariah amongst the fellow station owners of the area or Doc which presumably is responsible for the Mt Cook National Park..

      You mean like Guptill, Allen, Latham, Young, Nicholls, Phillips, Santner, Henry, Ferguson and Tickner? Which, exactly, of these players do you consider to be “essentially amateur”?
      Andrew Balbirnie is 31 and has played 33 first class games, Andy McBrine, 29, 18 FC games, Gareth Delaney, 25, 5 and this list goes on, their most experienced player is Paul Stirling who is 31 and has played 70 FC games. Most of the NZ’rs have played 100 or more. NZ should be hammering them pretty much every time they play them.

  Looking forward to a great day in the capital. Reading the auspices, I see that the All Blacks have lost only once on 16 July, to South Africa at Newlands in 1949. The story of patients waiting hours outside in a leaking tent in the middle of winter is appalling and shows a sector in crisis, National’s Health spokesperson Dr Shane Reti says.
“Sick or injured New Zealanders deserve to wait inside an emergency department, not in a makeshift campground in the middle of winter.
“Health Minister Andrew Little’s refusal to acknowledge that the health sector is in crisis shows how out of touch he is with what is going on.
“Instead of addressing the critical issues right now, the Minster’s focus has been on rearranging the deck chairs in the health system in the middle of a pandemic.
“Unfortunately, North Shore is not the only emergency department that has people waiting outside in tents. We are hearing of more stories of this across other parts of the country.
“These stories have eerie similarities to the last time Labour crashed the health system, when patients were on trolleys in corridors and being sent to Australia.
“The Health Minister has already lost the support of the health sector. The least he can do now is to redirect some of the billion dollar health restructure funding to resolve the emergency department campgrounds.”

Yvette’s question – Do headlines like “Andrew Little refuses to call buckling health system a ‘crisis’ as figures reveal big jump in reports of understaffing causing safety risks”* display Andrew Little has a personal situation of mental un-wellbeing that his spending $1.9 billion on mental heath should have helped resolve?

Or does Newshub revealing, 21 June 2021, as a result of the Government’s much-lauded record mental health investment, $1.9 billion, just five extra acute mental health beds have been added. **
Kiana with a history with post-traumatic stress disorder and bulimia nervosa, after dealing with a broken mental health system for six years, said “Here is my bed – a mattress on the f***ing floor,” – of a communal lounge because there were no mental health beds left.
Is that why Little will not now admit the whole health sector is in crisis. He is in charge, not the 20 DHBs he has just abolished.

It’s becoming obvious to anyone paying attention that we are constantly being subjected to substantial and concerted propaganda programmes and psychological behavioural manipulation.

It has been rife throughout the covid circus. This isn’t a point of debate, there is plenty of evidence from government sources where they clearly talk about using fear to drive policies.

    Maybe there is an investment opportunity in that? Everyone believes oil is going to go away soon, but only half is used for (likely replaceable by EV) road transport. I wouldn’t be surprised if the world was still using nearly as much oil in 10-20 years, yes EVs will be dominant in West, but there are a lot of poor people in the 3rd world who are getting richer that will get cars in countries without the grid infrastructure to support EVs. Or it could be that the world slowly realises that plug in hybrids are the most economic solution.

An outstanding piece from Aaron Smales at Newsroom about Matthew Tukaki; it ends thus:

That’s a fairly significant list of issues. Despite this, Tukaki has just been appointed to a government role in suicide prevention after stepping down from the role at Oranga Tamariki.

It also seems someone within the Beehive may have been tipping off Tukaki about the media’s inquiries. It is starting to look like Tukaki is being assisted by government ministers and bureaucrats because any serious scrutiny could expose a lack of due diligence on their part. The questions over Tukaki as an individual also hang over the government that has appointed him, which in most cases would make such a person a political liability.

Many in the wider media have been conspicuously silent on these issues. To give the revelations air time could be a tacit admission that previous reporting and promotion of Tukaki could have been naive and less than thorough.

His time at Oranga Tamariki, on the Māori Council and appointment to the suicide body should surely be subjected to a whole lot more scrutiny by both the media and those in Wellington.

The list of issues Smales refers to, six in all, is I suspect not exhaustive, but the media has shut things down. I’m sure the fact that Tukaki’s brother is Chief of Staff to Broadcasting Minister Willie Jackson is but a mere coincidence. Kudos to Aaron Smales for asking the questions that other, more senior journalists should be asking.

Asking as (most of) the rest of his Parliamentary Press Gallery colleagues just don’t seem interested in a conflict of interest that’s standing right there in front of them, and they seem quite happy to be sidestepping that elephant in the room, that’s for sure. Has anyone heard anything about Rotorua Council taking MSD to court, as motels are not considered suitable as permanent housing. The Council are wanting to get rid of the use of motels as emergency housing for obvious reasons. If they win this I can see other councils doing the same. What will they do with all these people then.

Well first steps for the All Blacks to recapture their standing as a world leading rugby team:

1/ Sack the Coaching staff. Appoint Robertson and reset team selection
2/ Tell all players selected that Test match rugby is about winning – via running footie is all very well, but its ok to take penalties in front of the sticks when 10 down and 8 to 10 minutes on the clock.
3/ Tell all players – patience is a virtue. If the ruck resulting from the last play is under pressure, put more players in and reset the tempo. Speed of play is great but ball under pressure leads to problems
4/ Defense; Get a shape that doesn’t over emphasis and outside back kamikaze-ing in from the outside to in. It creates big holes that smart inside backs will dissect with ease with a smart run or nice short pass…
5/ Pick some ball carriers who can get over the gain line – the Irish defense for large parts of the game smoothed our attack by making solid, effective tackles (off a marginally offside starting line but hey the All Blacks have done that for decades and play the referee for as much as you can get I say!)

I have been a Sam Cane defender but he is not leading well. The team is too individualistic and goes away from imposing a structure on the opposition via possession, position and patience. Thats the Captains on field responsibility to ensure structure and stop the headless chook play

Key Question: Will Ian Foster resign or will he try and hang on?

Fozzie seems an ok bloke but some people are not head coach material and some people are. Fozzie looks pressured and unsure – its a big sign after a few years in the job that the job is too big for him. Hand over the keys to the team Ian and let someone else try to turn the ship around…

I think that apart from the coaching that we are seeing a generation of players that have not endured enough struggle on the journey through the rugby pyramid. Flat track bullies is a term I would use – and when they get a smack in the mouth they lose focus and discipline. I feel sorry for Sam and Brodie having to try and hold it together when too many around them are losing their collective heads

Anyone see the propaganda on TV1 re Mahuta and her nepotism? First time they’ve reported it, and gee wasn’t it favourable to her. Apparently her opponents are “nameless”, “faceless”, “toxic”, “trolls”, “harmful”. Let me deal with those words one by one:

1. Nameless – lots of declared and anonymous critics
2. Faceless – as above
3. Toxic – no grounds set out, just bald use of the word
4. Trolls – as above
5. Harmful – 100% correct, her critics are indeed harmful to her agenda

As for the tears etc grow up and toughen up Nanaia. You want to wield unbridled power, it might have occurred to you that people might not like it. Seems to me that Labour could go around murdering newborns and still find cause to play the victim card. How pathetic
