There are a lot of interesting undercurrents going on in the race to become the next British PM. As well as the Remainers/ Brexiteers and SE/ Red Wall, there are the Net Zero sceptics – even the BBC admits there are 50 MPs in this group. They have become a lot more vocal as energy costs skyrocket. And that is mainly from carbon taxes and cost of subsidies, not Putin. The MPs even have their own candidate, Kemi who is old style conservatism. Must be galling that someone of Nigerian ancestry is the most British of all of them. To quote, “she was was “not someone who doesn’t believe in climate change”, but she argued it was “wrong of us to set a target without having a clear plan of the cost and knowing what it would entail…. “Setting an arbitrary target like that is the wrong way to go… There is a better way of going about these things,”

When will New Zealanders realise that they are having to pay a lot of money for the rich to get richer? There is the direct costs on energy -maybe thousands of dollars per family for just fuel and electricity. There are possibly bigger hidden costs for food – and they will rise with the new restrictions the government wants on meat and dairy products. Look why we are going to have to import pork and the cost of that. Taking farmland out of production for overseas magnates to plant unharvestable forests, and paying them to do it has to be near the silliest scheme so far. And of course, there is the massive cost of the bureaucratic empire to administer all the carbon reduction system.
What will make it worse is even if NZ impoverishes itself back to 3rd world status and becomes Net Zero, it will make no difference to the world. We may even be worse than Sri Lanka if the Greens get their way. China and India won’t care, just use us as another example as how stupid Westerners are. Of course the climate won’t be “improved”, but that was never the aim – just the current thing the elites with the support of sycophantic activists hang their hat on.
Which political party will break ranks and work to stop the stupidity? I despair that it will never be National and ACT is ambivalent.

    The very same people who scoff at comparative trajectories today are the same ones who if told in 2019 that the government would lock millions in their homes, legislate for forced business closure and prevent those who declined an experimental genetic injectable from work or social society, these people would also have scoffed.   One of the leading edges of the culture wars is climate change. Sri Lanka by government decree went to totally organic farming. This led to a severe shortage of food which led to rioting and the downfall of the government.
  
  A number of things stand out for me regarding climate change. Organic farming is very nice but will benefit mostly well off people who can afford designer organic food. Secondly is the world really getting warmer? And is it due to greenhouse gases? I know that I read a letter from a pastor in Greenland in the 12th century who noted that people were dying and people were leaving as the country was getting colder. Livestock were dying. Greenland used to be green pastoral land. So the world was warmer during the Medieval warming period and the world didn’t end.
  
  I am also sceptical about green energy. Some commentators online say that wind power and solar power are failures. They don’t add enough energy to the National Grid. That leads to blackouts. It is a fact that 80% of the world’s energy comes from fossil fuels.
  
  So yes I believe in looking after the environment. I also believe in prosperity and Western civilisation and the fact that all civilisation needs energy. In the foreseeable future that will come from fossil fuels. We need to accept that and stop leading ourselves into poverty.
  
  Climate change and green energy is really more of a religion. As it is Sunday I’m off to church in my SUV and I am thankful for the heat pumps that will keep us warm this Sunday morning.

Co2, not so much. The Co2 bandwagon was shonky and political from the beginning.     I watched this talk by Robert Bryce yesterday. In his talk he outlines some of the problems with ‘green’ energy, and just how much of it would be needed to replace FF generation.
    It’s fairly old (7 years), but it’s still relevant today. Actually, he spends a little bit of time talking about the damage Germany is doing to itself, which turns out to be dead accurate given the dire state it’s in now (I just read that Russia has turned the gas tap off. Lol.).

      I was going to make a flippant comment about the average Kiwi not being too bright; and half of Kiwis being below average.
      
      Actually, I think that many people struggle to accept that our politicians can be either so dumb or so motivated to enact laws that weaken our society. Surely that sort of thing doesn’t happen here in NZ. Myself, I find it difficult to accept that Jacinda, Grant & co would deliberately advance policies that push us away from our inherited freedoms.     Lots of people vote for a living. They make up the support for the watermelons and Labour communists.
    I have rellies like that. Thy have good paying jobs, live in Auckland inner city suburbs and vote green “because of the environment”. They eat meat, drink milk but post articles from thevegan religious activist Mike Joy about dairy farmers.
    Theirs would be the loudest screams if the Greens actually ran the show and taxed them because they are “rich”.

  As I have posted before Pollies are only interested in power. When they see the citizens moving against them they always do a U turn. The alternative is to get voted out of power.
  IMHO at least 80% vote with their hip pocket. When they go into the voting booth with the pen poised over the ballot paper they ask themselves have the current Government delivered to them or not. That and only that determines their vote.
  Governments get voted OUT not voted in. As we will see at Election 23.

  It will astonish many people I’m sure to learn that the 2 degrees Celsius policy target at the heart of the Paris Climate Change Agreement, and its 1.5 degrees Celsius offshoot, to which Net Zero is linked, are completely arbitrary and subjective. They are based on a 1995 recommendation by the German Advisory Council for Climate Change which drew on an obscure 1987 paper that in turn sought to establish a “tolerable temperature window” derived from computer generated mean global temperature ranges for the last interglacial period (about 120,000 years ago) and the last ice age which ended about 12,000 years ago.
  
  The methodology is so shonky and outdated as to be laughable. That these dubious estimates later morphed into baseline “pre-industrial” temperature levels is even more absurd and misleading, the reference to industrialization of course being inserted to point the bone at fossil fuels for temperature increases following the end of the Little Ice Age in the mid 19th century.
  
  This is not “science” and it certainly is not “settled”. But it is a magnificent con job. And the elites and the big corporations of the WEF-Davos clique (with the utterly corrupt UN tagging along) stand to benefit handsomely from it.

  One can only hope. The nzru seem very unlikely to make the change though. When foster spoke after the game it was like he had watched a different game, ‘a couple of mistakes in the first half’, ‘stuck to the game plan in the second half’, wtf.

  You may be right, Toddy, but the problem with NZ rugby is much deeper than that.
  
  NZ has been very good over the years in developing players to execute a fast-running style backs-orientated style but now, internationally, others have developed the counter to that with flat and fast defence. We can’t cope.
  
  The signs have been there for a while, from before the last World Cup for sure. The lack of depth in a number of positions is evident. I doubt there is time now for any coach to take the current squad (35) and remould them into a competitive team for 2023.
  
  Pessimistic? I don’t think so. The glass really is half empty right now.

    NZ typically does well from broken play.
    However that’s not going to happen if the opposition has grunt up front, plays a structured game and doesn’t drop the ball.
    A team like the Crusaders won because they put the opposition under constant pressure and sooner or later cracks appeared. The ABs couldn’t put the Irish under pressure. The opposite happened.
    It’s always the same. You can have the flashest car in the world, but it’s no good if the engine’s firing on two cylinders

  Pretty much capitalism at work. The All Blacks have a product that people want to buy. They sell their product to the highest bidder. Then the highest bidder gets to choose how they are going to distribute the product. If you want free to air All Blacks then it would require a broadcasting organisation prepared to outbid all others and then broadcast free to air. The highest bidder currently chooses to air to those who are prepared to pay for the product as a commercial transaction.

The All Blacks are experienced, well paid, professional sports people.
Why is the coach being blamed for their inept play?
Having read many of the hundreds of comments on social media, the vast majority of the contributors blame the coach for what went down onthe field of play.
Is that really fair though?
Senior players Cane, Whitelock, Retallick, Smith, Barrett all played average games and the front row was just a laugh.
Why would they all perform better under a different coach given that it is their job to play the game?

  The coach is in charge of team selection, player position, strategy and cohesion. The coach selects the captain. All of these are fails for the abs.
  
  The wrong players starting in the wrong positions and a captain who does seem to understand the game or lead.

  You answered your own question Gravel. Good players play better when inspired by a capable, uplifting coach. The Crusaders win with the same quality players as other teams but they lift their performance under inspired coaching.

      Why even bother having a coach if you think they make no impact? Look at the Crusaders, a quality side, under Todd Blackadder never won a super rugby title but came close. Switched to Robinson and have won every year since. Good coaches make a big difference.
      
      No saying Blackadder was bad, but Robinson brings an extra few pct.

        The board has to protect the brand . Silver lake , the fans …. The pressure will be on them to sort this out . Less fans and a fed up public ( rugby’s rules a major part , slow game and stoppages ) its getting to the point where fans will wander and take their wallets with them .

      Gravel, the coaches set the game strategy and expect the players to follow that strategy. The coaches set the attack and defensive strategy of for instance, the backs. So when our backs are so deep they are caught behind the gain line, that is coaching. When the opposition find gapping holes in our defence, that is coaching. Selection is also a problem for Foster. Lastly, Fosters Chiefs were highly paid as well, and were mediocre (and not surprisingly, when they were coached by a decent coach, won the Super comp two years running immediately after Foster made AB assistant). There’s a disturbing trend with teams selected and coached by Foster.

      Just to put Fosters record in perspective, he has coached ABs in 24 tests, winning 16. But 4 of the wins have been against Tonga, Fiji (2) and USA.       I don’t pretend to be an expert on rugby. I used to really enjoy watching it for entertainment but in recent years it seems to be losing some of the magic.
      Re the game. Only one team can win. Is it possible Ireland currently happen to be the better team?

      I would point to the transformation of Liverpool FC since Jurgen Klopp came along. He has had a massive impact, particularly on the self belief among the players. They all say the same thing about him.

        Role of the coach in pro sport:
        Yes, tactics, workable game plan, serious investigation and analysis of the opposition’s strengths and weaknesses, risk analysis, alternative ideas when results not working to plan on the day, ability to switch tactics if necessary, picking right players for the game – probably a lot more.
        But, to use your example of Liverpool FC, you might think that multi-millionaires whose job it is to play football would already have a strongly developed “self belief”.
        Otherwise, how did they get to that level in the first place?

      The ABs is supposed to be the cream of NZ rugby. They don’t need to be mollycoddled by the coach. It is up to the players to show some fortitude. The only job the coach needs to do on the day is to supply the oranges at halftime.

        The ABs did all right in the first test without Fozzie as he had covid. Next two tests Fozzie was back and they didn’t do so well. It seems to me that left to their own devices (and the support coaching staff) the ABs did okay in that test.
        
        Despite the obvious fact that these are some of the country’s top players, the coach sets the tone for the team. If the team are performing well without him and badly with him, it’s not a good look. Something is amiss in the ABs.

      We can look back a few tests to when the starting line-up was being changed each week. Most people appreciate the longer a team plays together the better it becomes. Foster at last (for now) tried to stick with a single team against which injuries intervened.
      The pack in the first test was brilliant albeit with a slow start and the plan to put Barrett at no 6 saw rewards in going forward. Last week he took at least 2 Irish throws back in his normal position of lock, Week 3 and the lineout missed the bus and the question begs was that because of Barrett being out, that may have been partly answered by the inclusion of the Auckland no 6 who got stronger as time worn on and produced a try.
      Also, I think Smith had little protection behind the pack last night. Once the Irish were use to defending against Will one inside the wing it may have better been released to roam as he was one of the best readers of the game at a time when unpredictability can be king as we saw from the Irish.
      Our propping stocks have taken a hammering and last night was not any better when poetic justice would have been a red card for the head clash.
      The ABs lost but showed they are a tight team, that is always a good place to rebuild from. As is the knowledge that the Irish are a great team and with the advantage of some NZ coaching and personnel.
      The Team moves on with many lessons on board.

  Coaches set the tone, choose the players and change the pattern. As an example, note that the Crusaders kick ie give possession away, far less than other times. Giving the ball to Ireland was stupid most of the time and a water boy message should have stopped Smith and Barrett as soon as it became obvious that it was totally ineffective. Coach and captain should go now.

  Basic skills are the responsibility of the player. It’s not on the coach if a player drops the ball.
  
  Tactics are on the coach. Analysis of our strengths & the opposition weaknesses, arriving in a game plan is definitely on Fozzie. And I don’t think he’s the best we’ve got at that.
  
  Having said that, was Graham Henry a great coach? Or did he have the great fortune to coach a team with two immortals of the game, in key positions no less, plus half a dozen terrific players.
  
  Lokking at the All Blacks now, only Ardie is a terrific player in peak form. Brodie & Sam are past peak, Beaudie still does what he always does (if the forwards could give him a platform He’ll still slice the opposition to ribbons) but he’s never been a great back foot player; others are merely good but not great.
  
  And this is a good Irish team; and other teams are getting better all the time.

    Graham Henry proved his ability as a Head Coach. To say otherwise is unfair.
    
    A head coach inputs on selection not only of players but also on picking the right coaching staff. Picking the right management & coaching team and empowering them as Henry did is as important as being a great on the grass coach. His approach got results and that is all that counts
    
    Henry proved himself at NPC level, Super Rugby Level, International Level with Wales (remember his Welsh side tipped over the Jappies) and then with the All Blacks.

    That one deserves to be up there with all the other bad correlation graphs. In 1999 the All Blacks did terribly under Taine Randall at the World Cup, and Jenny Shipley lost the election after nine years in power. So that blows your theory out of the water.

  The good coach will assess the opposition’s strength’s and possible weaknesses. From that he will devise his strategy on how his team will play their game. Also he has to make changes to this plan as the game is being played.The senior players are there to carry out the plan not to play their own game. Remember the coach is able to see everything that is happening from on high, the players involved in the game see far less.

Let’s compare James Lowe with Sevu Reece.

James Lowe was into everything and performed well all series. To top it off, he spoke so well after the match, then gave his boots and playing shorts to fans in the crowd. Real humble classy act.

Sevu Reece dragged his missus down the road by her hair, yet the charges were dropped because conviction might hurt his career. Just a garden variety thug.

Looks like we kept the wrong player!

So many other bad selections, players out of position and lack of direction from coach and captain. Surely the axe will fall but do they have the stones to do it? Emergency call and apology to Robertson first..

I enjoy watching the abs lose and this one was pretty special. Will never support them for as long as being an all black is an excuse for domestic violence.

Thank god the ref blew his whistle at 80mins to put NZ and the AB’s out of their misery – crushed by the mighty Irish TEAM 32-22. The ‘abies needed to score 50% more points to even draw equal with the Irish! Their final tally of 66% of the Irish score flattered them: they were comprehensively reamed – they never turned up (again) and were never in the match. This team may as well not even go to the World Cup.

There has only ever been one name that encompassed all the land mass, foreshore and seabed that

The word aotearoa has only been around for 130 years. An Englishman, Stephenson Percy Smith
made it up for his fictional story about Kupe and wanted a maori sounding word that he could use to
name this land in his story.
The maori were tribal orientated, so collectively, they never ever had a name that encompassed all the
land mass and seabed that is currently known as “New Zealand”.
Secondly, maori never ever heard the word aotearoa until sometime after 1890!
So, NZ’ers………. Be proud! Stand up! Speak up!
Keep “New Zealand” as the only name of our beautiful country where many cultures and races live.
Leave the word aotearoa back in Stephenson Percy Smith’s story book where it belongs.

I posted yesterday re the many people who very early on warned that lockdowns, masks, social distancing etc were not only useless, but they were actually dangerous.
I noted that I had kept much information in various formats to support this.

I was checking my files and came across this one from 2020.

of GDP) were lost then, compared to staying at Level 2. For lockdown to be optimal requires

models are not valid counterfactuals, due to poor identification. Instead, I use empirical data,
based on variation amongst United States counties, over one-fifth of which just had social
distancing rather than lockdown. Political drivers of lockdown provide identification.
Lockdowns do not reduce Covid-19 deaths. This pattern is visible on each date that key
lockdown decisions were made in New Zealand. The ineffectiveness of lockdowns implies
New Zealand suffered large economic costs for little benefit in terms of lives saved.”

Over 2 years ago we had an academic from the University of Waikato pointing to the obvious flaws behind lockdowns. They did a true cost/benefit analysis. No references to “granny killers” or “be kind” or “team of 5 million” or any of the other emotive bullshit to sell a completely flawed narrative. Cold hard facts. It was sent to them but it was completely ignored by the NZ media.
Similarly with Simon Thornley and the Covid Plan B team. Ignored and even worse, smeared in the mainstream media. This is just one of the examples (and not the worst) from Charlie Mitchell at Stuff.

A few months ago, after circulating to my e-mail list several items that posed serious questions and substantial doubts as to the vaccines’ safety, my brother, a doctor, came back at me, demanding that I stop. He told me I wasn’t a doctor, that I shouldn’t pretend to be one, and that I shouldn’t question the NZ government’s measures.

I answered that, on the volume of evidence I’d read, there was no reason I should ignore what had been substantiated and be less than true to myself.

I haven’t heard any more from him since.

      Turns out that the Ministry of Stats no longer produces the data, its the Ministry of Health.
      
      In their publication, there is all manner of data around abortions at 9 weeks or less, but the data for after 9 weeks is all amalgamated together, mostly.
      
      However finally you see a table that says there were 102 abortions at 21 weeks or more, representing 0.77% of 13,246 abortions, and of course there is no information on what the s11 qualifying criteria was.
      
      So yes, it’s provided for, and exercised, though at a very low level it seems.

Lou’s been a practising midwife for the last 20 years.
She was telling me that a recent survey she’s been made aware of, showed 6 out of 10 babies born in New Zealand are now either unplanned or unwanted.
I find that quite disturbing although not surprising.

    I have a pregnant family member. The pregnancy was definitely not intended but as religious zealots using the “take your temperature” method (ironically the same contraceptive that resulted in her being born 20 odd years ago) unsurprising to most of us.
    She’s a Maths teacher so has a few brain cells and the unplanned baby is definitely not unwanted (just not that timely).

    Recently I sold a car to a solo mother with ten+ children.
    Her husband had collapsed and died playing rugby.
    Whether she was a beneficiary I don’t know, but I’ve read some people who think welfare shouldn’t be extended to solo mothers with multiple offspring. If that happened there’s a risk genuine cases who have fallen on hard times would be hammered.

The question who the f**k do Taika Waititi and the Disney Marvel studio think they are to trample, trash, pervert and make a joke of the cultures of the ancient Greeks and Norse peoples for 30 pieces of gold and silver?

And yes, in answer to Hilary’s question, 2 scenes had a nubile Maori goddess sitting front & centre.

However, the real point is Waititi & his paymasters make a joke of ancient European cultures, but woe betide if the Scandinavians or the Greeks make a movie that mocks the Maori God’s as ignorant bloody thirsty ignoramus’. We would be told how wrong that is.

In the closing post scripts of the movie Zesus is seen asking Herculeas, “how did we become such a joke?” To answer that would take pages, but in short in the woke, secular, money is all power world we have allowed to become the norm, nothing is off limits in the interests of making money!

Then I watched it and thought it was the biggest load of trash I’d ever watched, which is when I realised it wouldn’t have mattered how bad it was because it was about Maori. A 10-day wait to see a nurse practitioner or doctor and far higher charges are a symptom of the “Third Word” health service Reefton residents are having to live with
Reefton people forced to travel to Greymouth to see a doctor are being charged three times what they’d normally pay their GP – on top of travel costs.
West Coast Health is relying mostly on nurses and telehealth to provide primary care in the town of about 1000 this winter after it couldn’t recruit the locums it normally uses to staff the Reefton clinic.
But patients needing an urgent face-to-face doctor’s appointment have been paying $100 all up for the privilege.
Vicki Reed, who is 63, went to the Reefton clinic this week in agony with a bulging disc in her back.
“I’ve had this before and the specialist told me next time I’d need a steroid injection under ultrasound, so I just wanted an urgent referral back to the specialist.”
But there was no doctor available to write the referral letter and the clinic nurse told Reid she would have to go to Te Nīkau Hospital and Health Centre in Greymouth, 80km away, to see a GP.
“My husband drove me down, and I waited four and a half hours in the triage area before I was sent through to the GP clinic. I don’t blame the staff for that – they’re all under the gun – but then I was charged $57 for the referral and a script for pain relief. And that’s on top of $50 for petrol.”

Here is why losing (sometimes) is good.

We tend to wring our hands in anguish if the ABs lose. However, I think losing sometimes is positive, and even necessary. Here is why:

Firstly, it keeps interest alive. If one side is totally dominant all the time, then people get bored. Sport is interesting when the outcome is uncertain, and that an opponent has a good chance of winning.

The only way that scenario can be true is if the side we support is beaten from time to time.

Secondly, losing dispels complacency.

Thirdly, losing drives improvement and positive change. It is hard to achieve this goal if a side is always the best in the world, because, there is little room or motivation to improve. But being on a lower rung from time to time gives motivation to improve and grow.

So, perhaps we need to accept losing from time to time as a necessary process in growth and improvement. The fact the ABs haven’t often experienced this situation is a shock to some of us, but I think an inevitable process to go through from time to time.

Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta has responded to accusations of potential undeclared or mishandled conflicts of interest when it comes to Government appointments and contracts with members of her family.

What may be intriguing about this article is that it presents Mahuta’s arguments against appointment inapropriateness without illuminating what any of those appointments are.

Like Nanaia’s sister, Tipa Mahuta being Chair of the Advisory Board, its edict status to Taumata Arowai, the Water Regulator, controller of “3 Waters” and by chain of command able to direct or negate “co-governance” matters at 4 entity levels. Think about it.
In “3 Waters” is that not real trickle down“?

        Oil is a worldwide commodity. “Drill baby, drill” is a nice slogan for the morons, but the US president’s political problem is one of rising global prices. Increasing domestic production won’t happen quck enough for that, and couldn’t produce to volumes needed anyway.

More redistribution policy from Robertson. Extending the fuel tax bribe. Will have to pay for it somehow because have already topped out on borrowing money on the NZ taxpayer credit card. Will have to tax the rich pricks some more. Will do it after the election. How are they going to do this? They already hiked the top tax rate to 39% and haven’t moved the tax bands up.

The problem is that NZ voters who can be bought out need cold hard cash payments, not indirect stuff like fuel tax excise discount being extended.
Panic stations now. Will be some pretty irresponsible fiscal policy from Ardern and Robertson from here on in until the election next year. For sure.

  – Borrow the money?
  – Reduce roads funding?
  – Reduce public transport and cycleway funding?
  
  Oh we have no idea. How surprising.
  
  Transport funding needs urgent reform. This stuff is just populist nonsense.
  
  And who is paying for the ‘half price’ PT fares?
  
  This reminds me of the policies I read about of New Zealand in the 1970s. Subsidise. Opps. Unintended result. Subsidise unintended result. Repeat.
  
  What a tragedy that 50 years on we are back in the nightmare.
  
  It will take a modern day Roger Douglas to repair the damage.

The jab fiasco continues. 2nd round of Covid hits my site, as well as bad colds, flu etc. Those who are “boosted” or 2 jabs getting sick more often. All younger & fitter than me. The 1 jabber – nothing. Me, the anti-(covid)-vaxxer had my mild dose a few months ago picked up from the “super-spreader” protest of mainly unjabbed, I share my site office with the boosted getting hit again, I am in everyone’s face running the site, I wear a face nappy nowhere – and I sail through unaffected. This is happening everywhere, I don’t care if it hurts you to hear it again – but you’ve been sold a lemon & been sucked into the biggest Pharma $profit & $bribe led medical misadventure in human history.
