‘Unemployment’ up again a little bit, based on some helpful interpretation of stats. Some are asking Why, when there are vacancies everywhere.

Some say it is more comfy on welfare. Maybe, but there is a massive black / grey economy in the billions to help out the household budget. Not all legit but plenty will be under the counter.

Suggest there is another issue – employers won’t employ them. No doubt for very good reasons. Then there are the alarming literacy and numeracy stats – an increasing number of young people with not much future in the workforce. Welfare and that black / grey economy beckon. End of.

        Too easy to get well paid whilst looking for a job – called “JobSeeker” benefit – not included in the Unemployment figures.
        Was about 160,000 a while ago which makes the real unemployment figures about 9%.

    You got it. Can’t be trusted. I would have to be watching them all the time. In an engineering workshop they would do things that I thought were impossible. Or they would just fuck up a machine so the job had to be stopped until I got parts and repaired it. Last one was a pressbrake. 135 tons of downforce does not stop for much, but one idiot managed to break a top bending tool.

      Our small tradie firm gave a guy a chance. Knew he was not long out of prison but seemed willing. Had to let him go after power tools started to disappear, turned up ‘impaired’. Had to trespass him in the end, soon after police advised he was on their radar (in their premises) and the notice was served. By that point he had been ejected from 3 emergency housing properties.
      
      Not the first time we gave someone a chance. A couple were good and went on to apprenticeships. Most average or worse and had to be supervised.
      
      We don’t bother any more.

  Labour has created a new category of welfare for the unemployed. We have the ole school dole which pays roughly about $300 a week. then during 2020 lockdowns labour created the job seeker benefit paying about $600 a week.
  So when labour reports on unemployment – which one do they refer to for the stats?

  Agree but it’s important to consider that the black and grey economies you refer to are just a euphemism for criminal or illegal activity, which afford negligible benefit (in deed only an expense) to NZ’s decent law abiding society.
  
  I stand aghast at the state of NZ today, especially considering the ideological grand standing by Ardern in 2017; can she really be that inept as a PM or has the destruction been deliberate?

  I was unemployed about three times over my forty six years working career; went along to WINZ and signed up for unemployment benefit. Only once did I get any money, for a couple of weeks, before I found a job again. Mainly because there was actually quite a like stand down period.
  I needs to spend my time being available if appropriate work came up, not committing myself to some shit job in another location and then finding real work presented itself a month later back where I was.
  In the meantime I was a statistic in the unemployed column.
  I had no qualms about fronting up at WINZ, but I’m sure plenty of office types like me wouldn’t go near the place. I made sure I dressed well so they wouldn’t send me off to a house repiling company or whatever.
  People lose jobs, but they still have to put sausages on the table.

  It is done through a survey. Thousand on Job seeker benefits are more likely not included.
  Job seeker beneficiaries masquerade as low-paid public servants on a low pay scale doing SFA.
  If we had an open and transparent government.
  All beneficiaries, including job seekers who are on a benefit, Should be treated as unemployed, and the actual number should be made public.

  Maggie sooner or later someone will lead a revolt against this Government and there push to give Maori a 50% share of New Zealand with only approximately 17% of the population and anarchy will take over and make the the Parliamentry protest on the mandate of vaccinations look like a holiday.
  Labour and our Prime Minister are hell bent on deviding New Zealander’s and will continue this march of dismantling New Zealand’s democracy.

Like tens of thousands of New Zealanders, the Taxpayers’ Union submitted to the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee on Three Waters (Water Services Entities Bill). With the Union’s submission was a bombshell legal opinion.
Ministers have repeated assurances that councils will continue to own water assets under the proposed ‘Three Waters’. But those claims are utterly false. Public law firm Franks Ogilvie, in an opinion reviewed by Gary Judd QC, lay out the extent to which these claims have been “calculated to deceive Parliamentarians, and when it becomes law, to deceive New Zealanders generally”. The opinion is being released publicly today.
Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan Williams says, “It is clear the Government realised that they could not convince New Zealanders that handing over ownership of local assets was a good idea. So they’ve instead redefined ‘ownership’ to mean nothing, so they can promise continued community ‘ownership’ in an incredible display of contempt for the public, the truth and the law.”

Headlines this morning that National plans, in effect, to cut health funding. What National is actually going to do is increase health funding some years more than others. Why our “news” sources print rubbish escapes me but then I don’t tell lies for a living. National should adopt Labour’s bribe system, fund only those media outlets which are honest, penalise the rest.

    He did not need to say anything. Even back in 2008 when things were grim, health spending went up by ‘more than inflation’. It will continue to do so because the population will grow and age.
    
    And as this government has shown you can spend all you like and outcomes will go backwards.
    
    He needs to do much better. The stupid media are just waiting for him to say anything that they can use to print a ‘got you’ headline.

        Tony, but this is the issue. National’s strategy for their whole five years in opposition seems to have been wait and hope for the government to mess up.
        
        Its not exactly inspirational stuff, right at the time they should be looking to show they are a credible government in waiting. Now is the time to be out there rebuilding trust with the public. We want to know what sort of government a luxon led one will look like, what its aspirations are and what does it want to achieve.
        
        It doesn’t have to release exact policy to do this, but so far, they are doing nothing. Its been incredibly disappointing.

    The suggestion is that the Treaty of Waitangi demands this. Well, it is our view, on this side of the House, that the Treaty of Waitangi does not trump democracy, and the country hasn’t decided that, and so, ultimately, what is being pushed here is, I think, a very divisive agenda which is pitting one group of New Zealanders against the others. They’ll say we’re being divisive by opposing it. This is not something that we have put forward; it is something that the Government has put forward.   * Repealing bans on prisoners voting. Terrible idea. if you committed a crime that lands you in jail (especially with the number of dud judges NZ has) you should be excluded from participating in society, including voting.
  * Voting age to 16 It is well documented that the human brain is typically still developing until about age 25. We should be increasing the voting age, not decreasing it. (the only reason to decrease it is there are a bunch of 16yr old idealists who have never encountered reality who will vote Green)

    The average first time prisoner has something like 48 convictions (I forget the exact number).
    
    That means any prisoner has a history of making very bad decisions for their own life, and the lives of their families and victims.
    
    Giving them the vote allows them to extend that bad decision making to the whole country.
    
    If there is to be a change surrounding prisoners and voting, then how about this: any person imprisoned for a crime gets voting rights stripped until 10 years after leaving prison.

    The Jamaican woman just did enough to win without expending too much energy.
    The highlight on the track was the women’s 10,000m. Often these races can be a procession, but not today.
    The lowlight was the disqualification of David Liti’s second lift by the jury after it was initially cleared in the weightlifting. He had a chance at gold at that point.

Ardern’s bought-off media is turning the mutiny gun on National.

The subsidised NZ Herald trumpets an article by Labour activist Shane Te Pou alleging Christopher Luxon isn’t up to the job of Leader of the Opposition.

It’s a desperate tactic when you’re back is to the wall. Create dissension among the opposition.

I believe National would have been stronger under Bridges and Bennett, but that’s in the past.

FFS National, with 15 months or so to go before the election, don’t change the captaincy again. That would save Labour and allow it to finish off democracy in this country.

At least the Herald puts Te Pou behind its pay-wall. However, that confirms the main reader target: National supporters.

Don’t under-estimate just hard it would be to conduct an amphibious landing across 130km of ocean against a defender who’s only got half a dozen suitable landing spots, which are all very strongly defended. The logistics would be hopeless. China invading Taiwan would play out as well as Russia invading Ukraine has.

On Monday last week I was in hospital for the day.
I was asymptomatic (and still am).
Had had CV19 about a month back.
Had a negative RAT in the ward.
But was given a PCR which came back positive (most likely because they test positive for a long time after an infection).

Yup, such a dangerous virus they need to count asymptomatic historic infections as people in hospital with CV19.

  A PCR test is about 96% reliable if you have the virus & 95% reliable if you don’t.
  The reliability of a RAT goes down if you are asymptomatic.
  Maybe the positive test is a hangover from your earlier infection, maybe not.
  Hospitals are on a hiding to nothing.
  If they were to ignore the PCR test result, or skip it altogether, and you were to infect some people, they look bad.
  They’d probably rather put up with your grizzling.

      Added to which the lawyers in the two other defamation cases will also subpoena the phone image.

However, after watching them play their pool games England have their own problems.

Housby and Cardwell are both top class shooters but I seriously doubt Cardwell would measure up to the Silver Ferns fitness standards.
They are going to have trouble countering our speed, both foot and hand speed.

Does anyone else get a feeling that the same is playing out in Taiwan now as what played out in Russia/Belarus/Ukraine 6 months ago?

Large military exercises very close, ‘experts’ saying ‘don’t worry it wont happen, it will be over in a few days and a general ambivalence in the media. Hope nothing comes of it and it is just sabre rattling, but it just all seems a bit too reminiscent of the Russian invasion.

I have no problem with Shane Te Pou, née Phillips being an opinion writer for the NZ Herald, but would there be value in the Herald acknowledging that he used to be a campaign manager for labour and provide links to other articles about Shane from 2012 in their paper to assist people with assessing the credibility and neutrality of his opinions. No problem with him providing his opinion but acknowledging his history would provide balance to that opinion.

While the Minister for Education Chris Hipkins, with Grant Robertson, Micheal Wood , Shane Te Pou, Haden Munro,and many others from the Labour continue to write articles for the Herald on National against National Leader Chris Luxon this corrupt Media source take the stories away that should be high lighted showing the mess that Jacinda Ardern our Prime Minister has turned New Zealand into and divided many New Zealander’s, Jacinda Ardern has turned democracy into a dictatorship by her quest to give Maori with 17% of the population 50% of the vote to Govern New Zealand.
With Education , Health, Immigration, Housing , Crime, the Economy and our Police Force in disarray the media have been paid by our Prime Minister not to criticize her decisions but allow her and there Journalists to smear the opposition Parties at will while New Zealander’s do it hard through there inability to control inflation.
