2 – Link that to ‘Christian’ Luxon, although he says law here is done and dusted
3 – Accuse National of pulling u-turn on flagship tax policy
4 – Point out that if National can do that u-turn they can do it with Abortion when in power
5 – stirs fear in vast number of women who supposedly still will vote for Jacinda – although most of them won’t actually need an abortion, but see it now as an attack on women.

I don’t actually know that I am more annoyed that Labour can do this – so openly play “Dirty Politics”

        Yes, Covid policy comes from “head office,” not from Wellington. It’s not an Ardern policy that will magically evaporate if she is not elected. National will be in a similar position of being obliged to do as they are told. This is why don’t oppose it in any meaningful way, because they can’t. To the extent we cede national sovereignty to supranational entities, we lose the ability to act in our own interests and in accordance with
        public opinion. Don’t like Covid policy? Tough, phone the WEF and WHO complaints line. Don’t like climate change policy? Tough, call the UN and leave a message. National won’t and can’t save us. Salvation is totally up to our own collective non-compliance and civil disobedience.

  National’s comm’s strategy has been woeful since they lost the 2017 election. Politics is about getting your message across. To do that, in the media age, it needs to be sharp, short and memorable.
  
  Every time I’ve made this point that Nationals comm’s strategy is piss poor, some loyal National supporter will direct us to a long speech by x, or a deep press release by y and note how comprehensive they are. And they are correct……they are deep, or long and completely miss the point.
  
  The average voter doesn’t give a shit about lengthy statements, or debates. Most would never watch anything from the debating chamber other than the few seconds on the news.
  
  National need to be able to communicate their message succinctly. They should be ten points ahead of Labour and are instead neck and neck. With all the issues of the moment, the 2023 election should be a cakewalk – unless National get serious about putting together a polished comm’s strategy, the election will remain on a knife edge and could be easily lost.
  
  Sure someone will be along shortly to tell me how wrong i am and direct me to another long, rambling speech that no swing voter will ever read. That’ll sort it!

    Completely agree. Sure, everything needs to be backed by substance, but the presentation should be easily digestible and be capable of distillation into a few short and memorable phrases. You convince people through their emotions, not by arguments. This doesn’t entail having no argument, but if you seek to influence people, it is done through the heart, not the head. This is a fact that all good politicians are keenly aware of.

        Back in 2017 she WAS pretty – compared to Andrew Little. And for certain feminine voters she epitomised all their ideals of women in public affairs. And some men, no doubt.
        I remember that red dress that went so well with the black flowing hair, sparkling eyes and smile, such animation – such promise of better things to come – surely?

  Maori already run “3 Waters” from the top, not from a much lower regional level.
  
  And the Advisory Council is now in place, and Taumata Arowai has be up and running since mid November last year.

  Where was the promised “co-governance” conversation?

  The Tame interview has revealed Ardern and her gang as without an argument. They cannot substantiate this asset grab with anything other than words entirely designed to deceive.

      I feel I have to give her the benefit of the doubt and say yes – she clearly has a few clues and, failing that, others around her, friends and/or family, who I assume are protecting her and looking after her interests by telling her the truth.
      
      Given that, I can’t but think she is fully aware of what is going on and why – but feels compelled to go along presumably either for the good of the party, to stop the Maori caucus from revolting and leaving en masse, or because of some favours coming her way down the track – or a combination of these reasons.
      
      The other possibility is that she genuinely thinks these changes, bringing in multiple classes of citizenship, are a good thing. I can’t rule this out. But I think this is unlikely, especially given her pitiful arguments in support – and which even she couldn’t be convinced by, especially given her intelligence as credited by her close allies.

        Of course she thinks it’s a good thing, because she has been brought up at a time when the ToW has been assigned almost religious significance, from which status radical social and political measures to achieve “progress” are derived and seen as necessary. The colonials “broke the contract” and redress must be made. The argument that Ardern is being led around by a Maori caucus is fallacious: she is a true believer. She genuinely believes that her ancestors were inherently evil conquerors and oppressors of “noble savages” who lived in an arcadian idyll prior to colonisation. She and many of her ilk conceive of themselves as moral crusaders, and thus, anyone who opposes them is by definition immoral.

Why else would Anthony Albanese suddenly be interested in granting easier paths to citizenship for Kiwis who move to Australia? It’s not out of a grand sense of altruism, or a response to our PM’s persuasive rhetoric. They just need skilled migrants and we are a handy source of them, so they are making themselves more attractive for Kiwis to move there.

Meanwhile, Mr Joyce points out that a month into our immigration ‘reset’ only one skilled worker has made it through to a visa. (He suggests the process fails the boring old ‘efficient and effective’ test.)

    I think it is a plausible inference to say that, if Jones were usually wrong, he wouldn’t be so heavily censored. Suing someone for 10 years for $150 million (although only being awarded $4 million, lol) while refusing to settle is a strong indication that this was an institutionally instigated campaign to bury Jones for good, such is the threat he poses by talking of the things he does. He has a huge following, is extremely successful and most of all, he is independent – influential independent voices are an obvious threat. I guarantee that 99% of those who dismiss him out of hand have never even watched or listened to him, and base their opinions of him on the opinions of others.

So I really am torn as to who to vote for in the Auckland Mayoral election. Malloy has a very high spend agenda, while talking about ratepayers not being an ATM, while the other two main ‘centre-right’ candidates have either failed to make any clear points or are equally as repugnant (the endless focus on the CBD). Really baffled at this point, beyond whoever is in the lead is ‘better than Labour’. We are so screwed.

Also right behind 3 waters, Tapsell will bolt in, and all government support will be given the finger. It’s interesting that Luxon was in Rotarua the very week Tapsell made her announcement to go for Mayor

    Lord’s social media approach loses me. His behaviour borders on egotistical (I’ve dealt with him directly, before the last election, and he lacks basic manners – which is a warning sign for someone who purports to be able to work with others).
    
    Apparently, when you tell people that ‘the Mayor is just one voice among many, it’s an equal voice among councillors’ (or something to that effect), and someone responds that ‘You may not understand what the powers of the mayor are. They have considerable executive power, please see s9 of the Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009’, that gives you free licence to become rude and explain that others must be simpletons for disagreeing with you.
    
    So I’ll pass, on that ground, along with the people who endlessly seem to troll Facebook pushing him (which I’m not saying you’re doing at all here, just it gets tiresome when all people seem to do is go ‘I’m voting for…’ on posts discussing actual topics).

      I’m not pushing him and don’t know him at all, I was supporting Malloy til he made himself unsupportable, first with his Stadium in a city that has far too many under-used stadiums, what he really lost me on was his support of co-governance. Brown was dreadful Mayor in Far North and really unpopular with the staff at Far North District Council, John Carter who came after him has been hugely popular with voters and the staff. Viv Becks also came out in support of co-governance, until she changes that I won’t be considering voting for her

  – cease AT’s war on motorists
  – keep rates rises under 3%
  – cut back unnecessary spending
  – remove goofs climate tax
  – halve the number of council workers who earn over $150k
  – cease implementation of UN policy unless it is best for Auckland
  – work with central government to plan for nationally significant projects- second harbour crossing
  – stop any race based undemocratic activity
  And as you say, all right of centre candidates wanting to revitalise the CBD, need better policy than free public transport, which we already have thanks to Reckless Robertson. People dependent on free transport aren’t going to bring spending money into the city, so here are some ideas:
  – stepped rated relief to attract businesses back
  – work with Police and social agencies to increase cbd prescence – make it illegal for people to sit and beg on pavements
  – drop bus lane fines in CBD and Newmarket for motorists – maybe for weekends only – getting a fine due to poor traffic design is a major disincentive for going into CBD
  – a one-off voucher for all households ie $30% off up to $60 for money spent in retail and hospitality. Or weekend days where council parking venues are free.

I see that Vogue cover model President Volodymyr Zelensky has pushed back against Amnesty International’s criticisms of his practice of establishing military bases in residential areas including schools and hospitals and launching attacks from populated civilian areas, thereby endangering innocent Ukranian lives. Amnesty has also criticized him for not protecting his alphabet citizens from public harassment by extreme far- right militias. Zelensky has accused Amnesty of ‘victim blaming’.

Zelensky has certainly mastered the art of western woke terminology and self promotion but maybe he has a way to go in demonstrating the ‘western liberal values’ that President Biden talks about so much.

I am becoming increasingly worried about Chris Luxon’s ability to plainly lay out an alternative vision for New Zealand. His words are full of hedging and he is almost apologetic in his opposition to something as plainly appalling as cogovernance.

“I have concerns about co-governance as it moves from management of local natural resources into the delivery of public services but what I’d say to you is the bigger issue is the Government needs to make the case as to what they’re doing in this space and where we’re going,”

He is not going to win the election by promising tax cuts on and cutting ‘wasteful’ spending. For what it’s worth this is what I think National should focus on. It is not without risk but if he just keeps sitting on the fence, the media will push him off humpty dumpty style.

1. Rule out cogovernance and agree to promote the ACT referendum on one person one vote.

2. Produce a rational and effective alternative to the RMA.

3. A plan to solve entrenched welfare dependency. A mixture of sanctions and generous training opportunities.

4. Fixing schools. There are many people with ideas, including a guest commentator who regularly writes for Kiwiblog. Gut the Ministry of Education. Replace it with a small funding authority and a curriculum design agency.

5. Commit to fixing the Reserve Bank and explain to the electorate the critical importance of this. It will need a new Act and a new governor who can attract back talent.

6. Commit to results with targets across the government, especially in health and education.

In summary, my themes would be…

A commitment to democracy.

Tackling inflation and fixing the RBNZ.

A commitment to efficient and effective government with specified results. The priorities are long term benefit dependency, schools, and health.

There are other areas that could be added but IMO they are not essential to lay out in any detail before the election. Examples are transport and roads and climate change policies. Both of these areas would need to be tackled by an incoming government because some of the existing policies are damaging. But National does not want an election focused on climate change.

I am not pretending that what I have set out is adequate for a set of policies. They are merely starting points and what I see as priorities.

We should abolish this malarkey about having our own system, which perpetually leads to debacle, and instead just adopt one of the international systems (I’d go for the Cambridge exams, personally). The whole education space should be de-politicised and the focus moved to how children are actually achieving. You won’t get rid of the political football until we stop playing ‘move the goalposts’.

    I was never convinced that Luxon would be the saviour that some hoped he would be – just seemed to be another managerial-type, pretty uninspiring if I’m honest.
    
    Regardless, another change of leader would all but guarantee a Labour victory at the next election – it’s too close for comfort now – another change of leadership would be a gift for Labour and their sister party, the media party.
    
    I think this is all going to come down to the minor parties ACT versus Greens & Maori – hopefully ACT can sweep up enough votes to get National over the line but it’s far too close to call at the moment. The alternative, a Labour-Green-Maori formal coalition would probably result in us doing a Sri Lanka within 3 years!
    
    Personally, I’m getting a strong sense of de ja vu over this. Wouldn’t rule out some useless idiot in National plotting and thinking now’s the time for them to shine – just like Muller, and probably enabled by the likes of Hooton – again (see he’s already doing the rounds). It’s almost predictable how this will go. Increasing volume of hit pieces from the media party, few ropey poll results, failing preferred PM rating, and some National MP talking to toxic-Tova about leadership rumours, unnamed sources etc.
    
    Will the National MP’s keep their mouths shut this time or will they revert to what has worked so well over the last few years? You’d hope that they would learn, but I guess we shall find out!

  I agree that Luxon is truggling to transition from a business mentality to a political mindset. Politics is alot about intuition and some have it and some dont. Maybe he will adapt in time.
  
  He has a problem. It is too early to go with policy but he must be giving strictly consistent messages on National’s major philosophical approach and what high level policies will change.
  
  Remember too, he has to win the centre. Talk of tax cuts and cutting Govt expenditure will not help him there very much. The centre ground in NZ is sopping wet and woke. He needs to be “caring, comforting, consistent, cossetting and considered”. Its ‘yuk’ for me and most reading this blog but it is reality.

  Unusually for you BY not see more clearly why Chris Luxon handles each attack on him that continue to come thick and fast from a very worried Labour Party. They are trying very hard to force Chris Luxon and National into a policy position of their (Labour) making by making outlandish claims.
  Yesterday it was Wood/Hipkins trying to manufacture a flip flop on tax policy as diversionary tactic to draw attention away from their problems their with latest band aide move. Ironically Wood made an issue of the newness of Chris Luxon to the role yet he himself is so new his clothes still show the sales tags from his first ministerial shopping spree.
  Meanwhile it would seem that the PM’s spin team are playing their media lap dogs to featuring “live” pieces from her as sort of the new alternative to the Podium of Truth. There is no written version showing anywhere in the media for those who can not stomach listening to her latest word soup. This one was about the other failed employment program Mana in Mahi apparently. Your attention is drawn to the TV coverage and in particular where the PM mentioned or consolidates the 5000 who have been placed in work by the scheme. Her expression and body language tell is that even she is starting to struggle to present fiction from her PR team as fact. In this instance the native caucus might have also played a big part in providing the “material”.
  All due respect to you BY but many of us have been watching Labour stoop to their dirty politics every time they have their backs to the wall. Last time they pulled another rabbit out of the hat was when Cindy was rushed to the front benches as she struggled to get the fast dying batter from her hands. Best hint is to be patient waiting for the National policy releases which have been their major task since old Winston chose the loosing party to continue loosing.

I am astounded that after several years of the most incompetent, deceptive, conniving government in our recent history there are still one third of voters who think they are OK and fit to be re-elected.

I am interested in what other Kiwiblog readers think about this and what may change it.

A couple of points. Public servants, national and local now make up a significant voting bloc and they are not voting for an early Xmas. There are a huge number of consultants, advisers, PR people, all sucking the taxpayers tit and they know which team to back to keep the largesse flowing.

There are also people who do not get a paper, watch TV news, read a blog, have any “official” source of news and have voted Labour for generations. They seemingly dont know anything different.

There is the “fear” vote, mostly female, that votes for Jacinda and hasnt woken up yet.

Does that add up to 30+%? What else? And how can those voters be persuaded to change?

  You have to remember that half the population is below average intelligence (I say this not sneering at them, it is a fact). What they care about is rarely defined in technical terms, in principles, or in long-term consequences. Instead, they care about looks and ‘feelz’ (hence people making sexist comments in favour of the PM because she’s ‘inspirational’, just because she is).
  
  If she leaves (‘I’m off for the champers at the UN’), then Labour will collapse. If the vote looks ‘too close’, she might decide to call it. But if she sticks it out, she will still bring a lot of voters, no matter how stupid or irritating that seems.

      That will depend. If they cross below 30pc, they can’t win, and she may not want to bother. At 34pc in the latest Roy Morgan, they are running dangerously close to the red line, with a general downward trend. Come election time, you’ll have much starker choices: nutters and racists vs lacklustre, but reasonable. Doesn’t mean Ardern can’t pull it off, but I’d say it’s not guaranteed (either to fight or win).

We are literally talking about the worst Government in NZ history (they have failed to deliver anything, no matter how simple, whether you agree or disagree with the purported aims). The people who can still vote for Labour and the Greens, after five years of shambles, aren’t going to be convinced by National hammering the failures homes. Labour does that all by themselves, regularly, and there are still people going ‘I support Jacinda!’. The mind may boggle, but it’s not about achievements (or failures) for these people.

  I agree . New Z now has a huge Swamp that, as the only statesman who could do it said, requires ‘draining’.
  
  That Swamp was also responsible for creating the Fear Factor that was the scamdemic ,in order to command and control the populace.These are the normally swing voters who adhere to the Saviour , St Jax of the Plague.
  
  And one of the major problems is the Swamp has literally bought the 4 th Estate , who sold its soul , very readily and have become Swamp dwellers themselves.
  
  I fear it is hopeless , as the Swamp just grows and grows.

I am no Foster fan but if that is the case the poor sod has the noose already around his neck which proves he should have been sacked when Plumtree and Mooar were.

  I don’t think that showing improvement is unreasonable (improvement doesn’t necessarily mean winning). The team has been together long enough under his watch (since Dec 2019). Having said that, anyone who thinks another coach is going to transform this team into world beaters is dreaming. You only have to watch the Warriors to see that – they’ve had more coaches than I’ve had hot dinners. 🙂

    Whilst some selection changes may have to be made to the team their basic problem seems to be that they have not adapted lately, at least partly for that reason.
    Another, ie the right, coach could very quickly start to transform this team.

I also understand the project is running well behind time and the best people have left a lot going into the private sector and taking their subordinates with them.
Having been involved in mergers acquistions restructures etc over 50 years I can but be astonished at the lack of planning and foresight in this project.
Then again maybe not.

I remember when

One-legged 93-year-old in wheelchair died after police hit him with a baton and stunned him with a Taser, IOPC says: GB News.
Officers were called to a care home following reports resident had a knife and was threatening staff.
One of the officers used PAVA spray after they had briefly engaged with him.
He was then struck with a baton, before the second officer used a Taser on him.
The knife was removed and he was handcuffed.
Gross misconduct charges have been served on the offers and they have received letters they are under criminal investigation for manslaughter.

  I avoid watching the tv news , but given they often cover cops killing people in the USA , I must have missed this one ……….
  
  The trial will be interesting and no doubt heavily covered by our Media Pardy . I’m very apprehensive about the risk of thousands of disabled , elderly and dementia sufferers going on “disabled justice protests ” across the western world and I also expect to see coppers , sports stars and politicians of all persuasions ‘taking the chair’ in solidarity with the protesters ……..

  The general public have an excuse for not seeing the scam that was inflicted on them. Medical “professionals” at the very least should have been asking questions about this from the beginning.
  
  A novel technology rolled out with undue haste for something that clearly wasn’t remotely as dangerous as was portrayed.
  The vast majority just went along with this. Why? There were obvious questions that needed asked but the vast majority of the profession went along with it like sheep.
  Our local medical centre are still behaving like it’s the plague. They won’t allow mask exempt people into the main building. We get treated in the car park by someone in full PPE.
  Not me, the only way I’m going anywhere near the place is if I’m unconscious. I am no longer interested in their services for the mundane stuff. I used to go for the regular check ups, I would get messages from them to come in for various tests. I have now figured out that they get funded for all of these things. Sadly I’ve completely lost trust in the health sector.
  As with everything in life, if it doesn’t make sense, follow the money.

I am wondering why in this technology based era we cannot cross reference a death certificate with the IRD? And for that matter, Internal Affairs, so stopping anyone using a dead person’s ID for nefarious purposes.
Even further, the justice system. I had a close relative with a warrant out for him who has since died….do the police/courts even know? And the list could go further – MSD to stop benefit fraud etc.
Is there some legal or human rights reason why this cross referencing cannot happen?

  Information must be used for the purpose provided. If a department wants to use data gathered by another it needs to be legal to do so (lawyers check) and a data sharing memorandum put in place.
  
  however as far as I know Births, Deaths and Marriages are public registers so anyone should be able to cross check to it?
  
  IRD will be extremely embarrassed by the ball dropping on this programme of giving cash away – they didn’t want to do it as they don’t think their data sets are up to date. It should be a not simple but not impossible job to get a good set of data to make payments against

More than 8600 children aged 5 to 16 are not receiving any education.
Porirua College had a 64% attendance rate last term.
Taita College attendance got as low as 65% last term.
Rongotai College’s worst day was 73%.

If it is a Labour Party initiative, it’s safe to say there’ll be no arrests eh?

  Tamaki gave a great interview on The Platform with Paul Brennan the other day. You can see why the media have always denounced Tamaki, because he actually has integrity. I was hitherto indifferent, but he is one of only a handful of public figures making the right noises and having the correct analysis on the current state of tyranny. Kim Iversen has been one of the long time hosts of The Hill’s Rising. Here she explains why she has suddenly left.

Fauci was due to appear as a guest on their show. Iversen has been a staunch critic of the vaccine mandates, masks etc. She has put her case very eloquently over the last year or so. Their show permitted free debate, others didn’t agree with her, it made interesting viewing. Seeing open debate on a subject unlike the blanket censorship here in NZ.
Iversen was excited about the opportunity to interview Fauci and she had a number of great questions for him that we would all like to hear answered.
When Fauci’s team were discussing the upcoming interview they asked which hosts would be on the panel. The explicitly told the producers that they didn’t want Kim Iversen on the panel. That’s why she walked away. I’ll be following her other channels and I’ll support her financially in some small way if that is an option. I am guessing many thousands of other people will do the same.

Free speech and open debate must be maintained.

  That says it all really: the arguments and evidence surrounding Covid are so weak that “Mr CDC” cannot even withstand some pertinent questions. If there are two sides to a debate but one refuses to engage (a la Parliament protests) the only conclusion that is valid is that, ipso facto, the latter has the worse argument and cannot defend it.

Re the dysfunctional Hutt City Council, I heard a rumour that the former City Manager Tony Stallinger is going to announce that he will challenge Labour Mayor Campbell Barry and have a team of centre-right council aspirants behind him.
If this is true it will at least give us someone to vote for.

I remember when

Friend had second covid booster as travelling overseas.
Four days later tested positive so rang travel agent who told them they could still fly if they wanted to do so.
Talking about it with an older lady we know, who suggested that wouldn’t be fair as they could infect the rest of the passengers.
I suggested that there were no doubt other infected passengers on board already.
Incidentally, the infected one was talking to couple who had also just had a booster.
The husband tested positive a day later and his wife shortly after.

    There was an article in the Guardian about 10 days ago by a Gay guy who caught Monkeypox and Gonorrhea after a weekend of unbridled LUST at a PRIDE event in NY.
    
    Article was over 1000 words and he described his case in all its technicolor detail.

New Zealand continues to be hostile to any talk of mining its large coal reserves, while at the same time importing millions of tons of coal from Indonesia to turn into electricity.

What is this country missing out on?

The Wall Street Journal reports:

Over the past year, Newcastle coal futures, the main Asian benchmark, have risen from around $US134 to $US390 a metric ton today. Prices will probably remain elevated for the foreseeable future—or at least until there is some meaningful ebb of the conflict in Ukraine.

    NZ exported 1.2 million tons of coal in 2021, down from 2.2 million tonnes in 2012.
    
    Imports – of thermal coal – are running at just over a million tonnes. Imported thermal coal replaces fuel from the coalfields near and even under the Huntly power station.
    
    With international coal prices soaring and shipping prices rising, a rational country would exploit its plentiful thermal coal resources rather than import the fuel.
    
    NZ has bountiful reserves of thermal coal, from bituminous down to the lignite (brown coal) of Southland. The lignite alone could supply all of NZ’s electricity needs for many centuries. NZ has total estimated coal reserves of 16 billion tonnes, 80 per cent of which is Southland’s lignite.
    
    The latest amount I can find for Victoria’s annual brown coal (lignite) use in generating electricity, 2018-19, was more than 40 million tonnes. In 2020, Germany was generating a quarter of its electricity from lignite.
    
    NZ coal exports have dropped since the Government pulled the plug on State-owned Solid Energy, which was caught by a downturn in coal prices. At present these prices are soaring.
    
    Pressure continues to close NZ’s remaining coal mines, with the last mining in Southland the target of Greens.
    
    Is NZ exported coal of high quality? It is bituminous, leaves little ash, and is used for blending with other coal for smelting in the steel industry. Long term, steel-industry demand may well fall as gas-based processes are introduced.
    
    Transport costs from NZ of steel-coal exports are high. The coal has to be railed from Greymouth through the alps to Lyttelton before being shipped to Asia.
