Apparently Transmission Gully is causing a few problems for dopey EV drivers who neglect to give their batteries a decent charge before attempting the steep climb at the northern end of the route.
All I can say is: Har Har bloody Har. Serves you right for being a Greenie twit.

        The downside is that towing 2,000 kg, it would have a range of about 250 km max. There are not many customers for such a vehicle at $160,000 for the base model.

      Absolutely right. Anyone driving an EV for more than a few weeks has got this figured out. If anything, a new EV owner is probably going to be extra careful about driving range (called range anxiety).
      
      Only a careless person is going to let themselves run out of charge or petrol.

      NMTB. It’s a grid tied system consisting of
      16 panels . Together with a low night rate I charge the car at night between 11pm and 7am. Because of the over capacity I export much more electricity than I import which means in effect I Am Getting power at no cost between those hours and subsidising the usage during the rest of the day. Our largest bill is generally in July and is under $300. We run a central heating heat pump ducted system set at 19 c that we turn on around April and off September. LED lights through out the house and a timer on the hot water cylinder. In the summer of course the system works as aircon and is at no cost, in fact we get credits in high summer. I looked at the whole thing as an investment for retirement double glazed the house and planted 300 firewood trees to fill the wood burner which is on wet back. I wanted to deliver ourselves out of the hands of as many outgoings as possible before the fixed income kicks in. So the whole investment was done from a purely financial point of view rather than environmental concerns. It’s paying larger dividends than I with my limited financial literacy could have done otherwise. Thanks for asking

        We are only 2 in the house but our winter bill tops out at about $220-240 in chch, and about $110 in summer. House is partially double glazed fraemohs.

      That depends on the size of the battery, the size of the solar array and how much sunlight is available.
      
      A 24 Kw Nissan LEAF would take approximately about 7 hours to charge from empty to full if you have a 5Kw solar array and the sun shines constantly.
      
      The LEAF charges at about 3.5Kw/hr and the 5Kw array will not put out 5Kw all the time. It starts slowly in the morning, peaks near noon and then declines till evening.
      
      You rarely let the car get to zero or charge to 100%. 20% to 80% is more reasonable and better for the battery.
      
      Also, since many power companies have lower rates during non-peak times (nighttime rate), it is almost better to charge the car off the grid at night and use the solar power during the day for your home when power is more expensive.

      Did that solar array fall out of the sky and land precisely, and softly, on your roof or lawn? Did your EV fall off the back of a truck (probably on its way to the landfill)? Is the insurance free on your EV? No wear and tear on tyres? No servicing, ever? How about those batteries – free to replace? Free to dispose of?

        Never been troubled by a spreadsheet in their lives, and wouldn’t know a Benefit Cost Ratio if it jumped out and bit them.
        
        This is also why the cycle lobby will never admit that the reason we drive cars is because we receive benefits from doing so – like getting to work, staying dry, convenience, safety, shopping, taking the kids to sport, looking after the needs of sick people or old people or disabled people.
        
        I guess if you are 26, university educated, like drinking latte in big towns, bike for leisure, and have a nice government job, everybody looks just like you, and EVs drive for “free”.

      Yes captain because I won’t be paying $3.00 a litre on top. Neither will I be servicing it twice a year buying an oil and filter or filling it with oil. It’s about the economy of it. I don’t care what cars people drive and find it puzzling that anyone would be bothered by what I drive.

    If it works for you good on you. My lifestyle is unsupportable with an EV. What you’re missing though is that EVs and solar are only made “economic” through grants and subsidies paid for by the taxpayer / purchasers of non EVs. To that end fine if it works for you at a personal level, but ultimately the ponzy scheme will collapse.

      There’s also the $10 – 20 value taken out of the battery every time it is charged, and the as yet unannounced levy for disposal or recycling of it when it reaches end of life. Let’s not mention the fact too that other hard working taxpayers get up each day to provide the road infrastructure for free to EV drivers. Still, good on Stellaboxer recognising that driving an EV today is absolutely personally a sensible one economically. If I could afford a second car for round town, I would too.

    Of course not. We should all be allowed to drive whatever car we like. All cars should be subject to the same RUC. Fuel excise should be abolished. All RUC revenue should be allocated to roads. The “clean car discount” boondoggle should be binned.
    
    Will such rational policies be introduced by any government? Not by National. Maybe if ACT ends up with 20 percent of the vote it might have sufficient leverage to promote efficient, non regressive policies.

      In the last seven years of driving an EV we’ve watched the price of petrol go up tremendously.
      
      In those seven years we’ve had to purchase 2 new tyres and a few bottles of windshield wiper fluid. No other maintenance costs.
      
      Still have to pay for WOF, rego and insurance though and eventually RUC.
      
      Still is a pretty good deal financially and fun to drive a really quiet car.

      You are correct that two cars can’t charge from a single charger at the same time. In the same way that one petrol pump can’t fill 2 cars at once. You don’t charge every car every night.

    I’m skeptical. Even the low end EVS have a range of about 400 km. The higher end EVs much further. I got raced off at the lights last week by a Tesla. It took off like a rocket.

        Have 2 daughters with much maligned Nissan leafs. Funnily enough they love them. One daughter is a one car family and she commutes 50 k each way. To get around the range problem for the occasional long trip people have a buddy system. We are their buddy so they bring the leaf to us and pick up our ICE. They are happy and I doubt they care what the Luddites think

        Young woman I know has a $7K leaf. So an oldie, Travels all over the South Island (it’s bigger than the North) No issues at all.

      NZers are used to buying 10 year old cars, and expecting them to be near fully functional. A 10year old Leaf, is likely on its last legs.
      
      OK if you are driving 10kms each way on the flat to work or the supermarket. But you will get to enjoy range anxiety good and hard climbing Transmission Gully!

Apparently you can do so by flying from LA to Denver (1,300 km) and back to play polo. And drive to the airport in an EV but your kit follows in a Range Rover. I don’t have an EV or a Range Rover but I’ll certainly try to do my bit to save the planet.

“3 Waters” – still I dribble on …
Usually when “3 Waters” is mentioned by state television, 1 News, they show us footage of water rocketing in a vast fountain in Te Aro, Wellington, somewhere – three times I have seen the same footage already – a burst pipe that should be fixed by now, but how would it be repaired under “3 Waters”?
By the same contractors as used now or in some new mystical way, that somehow will be cheaper?

“3 Waters” legislation is passing through Parliament now – submissions were heard, I understand, for the entire motu (ha, whole damn nation) by two hearing teams just August 15 to 17, a few days ago – so where is the “public consultation”?

And when Jacinda gets around to it – after announcement of announcements, or was August 15 – 17 it? – will someone explain how the Te Aro pipe will get fixed more efficiently and cheaper?

The rough answer, if I understand Grant Robertson correctly, is that the larger entities will be able to borrow bigger loans better – which must crystallise the ownership of assets to being the Entity as borrower – but what happens then if an Entity fucks up? And, under this Ardern Labour Non-Delivery Government, one is bound to. Do those assets then transfer in ownership to the Lender, probably an International? Explain that one please –
– as well as the cost of fixing the pipe in Te Aro

The way round this would be to allow the lenders to the 3 waters authorities to secure the loan by the ability to levy rates on land covered by the area of authority which is essentially how council loans for 3 waters projects (or at least water supply and sewage) are currently secured.

  What’s the bet the cost to fix a burst pipe (under 3 waters) will rapidly escalate?
  
  Gone will be many of the local planners and those local contractors with decades of institutional knowledge (and of the local idiosyncrasies eg in some places to accommodate other underground infrastructure “challenges”) based through-out the country …. as along comes Labour’s 3-Waters shiny new Head Office bureaucrats in the main metropolitan centres and the new single entity contractors that will need to travel to the regions and beyond into the “wop-wops” (and potentially be accommodated overnight – more $$$ – if the problem can’t be fixed within a day).

Tensions must be rising within the Labour camp. In March this year Jacinda announced that the consultation with Maori representatives over cogovernance had been completed and that the public consultation would start this year. Well, it’s almost September and no sign of this happening.

My guess is that the Maori response was so radical even Ardern is waking up to how the public will respond.

Slick Willie and Mahuta must be getting a bit fed up by now. How will they jump? Will they do a Sharma and make a public fuss? Will they shut up and keep gathering the fruits of the highest paid jobs they will ever get? Will the radicals wait?

It’s going to boil up to the surface somehow.

  I heard an interview on the radio with some Pacific Island leaders on the difference between the Aust/NZ approach to aid and the China approach.
  
  The leaders were critical of Australia and New Zealand as our government tends to have ultimate control over how the money is spent. They said the Chinese tend to be better at listening to what the recipients want.
  
  Later in the interview one of the leaders mentioned that China had provided limousines for the politicians in Niue. Nice.

    I worked on Pacific Development projects a few years ago. We provided training and equipment, we did not provide money or funding for very good reasons. It’s not about control it’s about ensuring the funding goes into the right area and there are good outcomes, otherwise it will disappear. Family ties, tribal or village ties and wontok will override proper governance every time. And to be fair proper management of funding avoids the recipients being leaned on by the said family, village or wontoks depending on the Island group.

Even the Chinese would understand that any breach of extradition undertakings will have serious consequences – no more exraditions from Western nations to China and loss of ability for Chinese people and companies to enforce valid debts in foreign courts (a Chinese company recently successfully enforced a debt in a NZ court). Yesterday I had a minor medical procedure at Southern Cross Hospital. In conversation with a group of nurses and unpromted by me they raised the issue of Maori matters in their employment and that they had to use Maori in emails etc and also indicate their pronouns. I guess as a 70 yo white male they felt comfortable raising these issues.
I told them my corporate clients expected me to do the same. To their amusment I said I continue to use Hi (name) and Kind Regards/Regards/Cheers in my emails and when asked for my pronouns say it depends on who I feel I am that day. They asked if this had impacted my work. I said far from it a number had told me verbally they liked the push back and wish they could do the same but would be fired if they did.
This is yet another example of Bullying Intimidation and Thuggery that exists in our society. We are further down the Communist road than most citizens realise.

    That is exactly what it feels like at my work. I am constantly bombarded by white people speaking to me in Maori and it’s really bizarre when I think about two white people conversing in someone else’s language. I never respond in Maori but my white manager constantly bombards me with it. It makes me very uncomfortable and I resent being bullied into having to use someone else’s language so I steadfastly refuse and always respond in English. I would feel the same way if I had to speak in say Flemish or Icelandic or Xhosa.
    
    There is now an ‘us’ and ‘them’ division based on whether people use Maori or English to open and close their emails, and everyone is identifiable.
    
    You can tell the really ambitious ones who have carefully learned to recite Maori prayers to open and close every meeting (the rest of us are also forced to read and recite a Maori Christian prayer (karakia)-whether we are religious or not, or it’s our religion or not), and their “pepeha” which is a potted ancestral history. These can take several minutes of recitation in Maori. For some reason they have stopped making us sing Maori songs in meetings at least. I am not about to ask why. Let sleeping dogs lie.
    
    Now this usage seems to have become a de facto employment competency and those who partake of their own volition are looked upon favourably. I never signed up to any of this in my employment contract and wonder if my rights are being impinged upon either under the BORA or under employment law? It certainly feels like it.
    
    I saw a lawyer on here make a comment the other day that some lawyers are fighting back about this encroachment but it’s a tough and lonely place to be.

  One of the guys I work with has a rather unusual greeting in his emails and project minutes. Rather than Kia Ora, he has a rather long greeting which includes “Hi”, “Kia Ora”, “Bula”, and three or four other salutations in various languages. He also has the regards at the end in the same way. He did this because he was under pressure from one PC nitwit to use Maori greetings. He felt this was a bit racist and pathetic (his words not mine) so pushed back with his ironic greeting. I find it all quite funny – fair few PC folks get annoyed at it though (even more funny). So far so good but now for the best bit. The best part of course is that this guy is actually Maori and he finds the whole thing ridiculous. He actually thinks he gets away with this because he’s Maori, which is even more ironic.

  Although this issue is specifically about Maori language, the ideology behind it is not. It’s more generic and can best be described as a “Civil Rights Culture” where:

      I think it depends who you work with. I work with a number of Maori and PI ranging from 20’s to 50’s. All of them push the language on the rest of us every chance they get. And every second question is ‘how is this meeting Treaty obligations?’ But they are constantly encouraged, aided and abetted to do so by white leftie managers. Not that they need them, and I suspect the white lefty managers would be overcome with grief and disbelief if they knew they are seen and laughed at as useful idiots.

So it’s been no secret since late 2020 that Facebook suppressed the New York Post stories about Hunter Biden’s laptop with all its information about his family’s corruption. In this Facebook was little different to the MSM, Twitter and others, claiming that the laptop was “Russian disinformation”. It took almost two years before the same people admitted that the laptop and its data was real.

But yesterday, appropriately enough on the Joe Rogan show, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg discussed how this was at the direct request of the FBI, who came to Facebook and told them about an “upcoming dump of Russian disinformation”, which turned out to be the laptop story. Even though the FBI had had the damned machine/s for almost a year at that stage and knew they were real.

Talk about putting your thumb on the election scale.

We see such a lot of information rubbish about the nuclear power plant in Ukraine. We see claims the Russians are shelling it. (claims bad Russians are shelling it)
But if you look at the map in this link I really can’t see any reason for them to do so. They control it entirely. It’s tens of kilometers by land to Ukraine territory. It’s an incrediible asset to the Russians. No way would they shell it.

Kim went soft on him but he divulged that he asked specifically for the Ambassadorship to Ireland and that he has 3 or 4 grandchildren there. Quite open about it. Also he will take a knighthood and obviously expects to be given one. He was trying to redeem himself but sounded narcissistic to me.

According to Lauterbach, the “vaccines” cause “multiply-vaccinated” persons to develop symptoms of the illness their multiple “vaccinations” were designed to keep them from being infected with more quickly than “the Unvaccinated,” so they stay home, and thus help to “limit the pandemic,” whereas “the Unvaccinated,” being “asymptomatic,” go around heedlessly infecting “the Vaccinated,” which they wouldn’t be doing if they had been “multiply-vaccinated,” as they would be home suffering the flu-like symptoms they were assured the “vaccines” would protect them from suffering but which actually caused them to suffer more quickly.

You couldn’t make this stuff up if you tried.

Socialists understand nothing about creating – only about destroying.

Take a look at what they’re pushing for in Christchurch. Practically nobody uses public transport. They are already massively subsidised, but that’s not enough. They have halved the cost of bus tickets, but still nobody buys them. Most buses are empty or have one or two passengers. During peak times you might be lucky to see 5 to 10 passengers on the odd bus here or there. Average is 3 or less.

So what’s the “solution”? Chch want to make car usage so expensive and unpleasant that it will force people going to the CBD to use public transport. They want to do so through a combination of “congestion charges” (yeah right, what congestion), making parking harder and more expensive, reducing speed limits and no doubt also adding more one ways and no-car roads.

Of course this is not really going to work. People already avoid the dying CBD. They will just avoid it more. The only reasons to go are the hospital and the courts. This is not going to encourage bus use. It will be a final nail in the coffin of the CBD.

The socialists seem to think they are control, but forget that people still have some choices and will sake them.

If these people ran a breakfast food company they would make gruel with weevils in it. Everyone would buy Weetbix instead. Instead of fixing their awful gruel, they’d sabotage the Weetbix factory expecting people to switch to the gruel. But instead people would just skip breakfast entirely.

Competition in the private sector drives product improvement. Socialist governments do not play in that space, so they don’t improve.

    I read recently that Russia has been, for years, funding green activists in the West, to promote the Clean & Green agenda, in the sure knowledge that electricity generation, traditionally reliant on Nuclear and/or Coal fired generating plants, would be best shut down in the name of being “clean & green”.
    Thus leaving much of Western Europe heavily reliant on Russian gas, which Russia has now weaponised, to the chagrin of France, Germany, and probably a number of other EU countries sucked in to the same thinking.

Anyone know how NZ carbon dioxide supplies are holding up?

A shortage in the United States threatens food production and beer brewing, reports the Wall Street Journal.

It says American supplies have been hit by two main causes.

Less car driving because of the Covid pandemic, has hit demand – and production – of ethanol. Carbon dioxide is a major by-product in making ethanol.

There have also been production problems at Jackson Dome, which has natural supplies of carbon dioxide

Nearly three-quarters of carbon-dioxied used in NZ came from the Marsden Point refinery, now closed.

Kapuni, the supplier of most of the rest for the NZ market, was down with maintenance work over winter. Last month there were reports of rationing of the gas.

Newshub interviews Byron Clarke who they introduce as a “disinformation researcher”. to talk about recent events and has been doing uni talks on the “alt-right”

But he doesn’t appear to be an academic or expert but a self proclaimed activist at the centre of Occupy Christchurch which he wrote a book on and runs the occupy chch web page. He writes a series of amateur blogs but It’s not clear what his real job is or who funds him.

It’s a new use of the word researcher which usually implies a professional academic researching the subject.

Newshub says in his profile page that he’s a “Byron Clark is a video essayist whose work focuses on New Zealand’s far-right and conspiracy theory scene.” Here are his video essays on you tube. Just start by looking at the titles and imagery to decide if this is a credible source or fringe far left.

They call him a video essayist but what are his credentials. Is he simply a leftist activist and blogger. What is his academic background. Who funds him?

It’s not just newshub he is on stuff and doing talks on the far right at Massey University. It would be great if we could get real clarity on who these experts of the truth are.

    You should also look out for ‘Independents’ who keep their political endorsement quiet. Labour endorsed Independents aren’t ever going to be highlighted by the media.

So a couple of questions,
What deal has google and microsoft been given for certainty of power ?
And do they preferential treatment during shortages?

Most interesting, appreciate you taking the time. Moving towards self sufficiency, even a bit, is the way households used to be. Even if just a garden and a couple of fruit trees. Not so much these days.

You mentioned financial literacy. That is the main path to self sufficiency I have taken, along with development of critical thinking and useful skills, and drummed into the family. So far, so very good!

Never thought I would say it but TOVA did good interview with Zelensky.
NZ only gave them a measly $7.5 million.
We can do better.
Extend visa so wider family members can come to NZ. Poland has taken in one million.

I have enjoyed most comments on rugby union on this blog. It is away from politics, but it gives me a fresh viewpoint from people who know much more about the game than I will ever do. The rugby pundits on here are not poncing about looking for a lucrative contract with N.Z. Rugby.
I hope they are all on here tomorrow.
