How Māori use maramataka to care for mental health issues and how the practice will be incorporated into treatment by Māori Health Authority
Māori are well known for using the stars and the moon to navigate across the ocean in their waka.
Not so well known to non-Māori is their tradition of using the moon and stars to help treat mental health issues.
It’s called maramataka and will be incorporated into treatment by the new Māori Health Authority.
,,, Māori have the highest suicide rates of all ethnic groups in New Zealand. Mental distress among Māori is almost 50 percent higher than non-Māori and 30 percent are more likely to be left undiagnosed.
… The new Māori Health Authority has a budget of half a billion dollars and CEO Riana Manuel has allocated $100 million of that to support centuries-old treatments.
“Connecting people back to those spaces and places that have been long forgotten is certainly something that will be investing in,” Manuel said.
Just like they do with Matariki, Māori use maramataka as a way of reading the cosmos to prepare for what’s coming.

The new Māori Health Authority has allocated $100 million to support centuries-old treatments.
Is that amount of funding to implement the treatments, or research them.
And to what extent has the new Māori Authority come into being, before there is accumulated whatever Māori knowledge should justify their being?
Is it the proverbial clichē – “cart before the horse”?
And $100 million is to go look for the cart?
Or is the question just racist?

      By using the stars for something that the stars are useful for, ie navigation. Not by using the stars for something that they’re not useful for, such as medicine or fortune telling.

        James Cook had sextants but also one of the first maritime chronographs. So he could measure longitude, one of the first to do so. So he was able, for example, to mark the position of the Marlborough Sounds and return to it on his subsequent voyages with total confidence.
        
        AFAIK Maori had no way of measuring longitude.

      They navigated their way here using appropriate instruments such as a sextant, compass and charts of what were known at the time.
      
      Their means of navigation has nothing to do with treating health issues using “the moon and the stars, and reading the cosmos” – in fact Cook was well ahead of his time by using limes and other citrus fruit to keep Vitamin C levels up and prevent scurvy. Hence the nick-name for English, particularly sailors, of “limeys”.

        Cook was 140 years after Tasman. Tasman missed Australia, found Tasmania and then Golden Bay. Tasman did not even have a sextant. It was all dead reckoning.
        
        Just saying there were immense advances in navigation from Tasman in 1620 to Cook in 1768.

        The Dutch did know about the west coast of Australia because of their colonisation of the “Dutch East Indies” now Indonesia. Dirk Hartog discovered it, and Tasman was trying to see how big it was, but missed the turn north up the east coast. Can’t recall ATM the full history. Google is your friend…..

        On the first voyage, Cook used the method of lunar distances to determine longitude. It requires laborious calculations based on the lunar separation from at least three stars and their elevation, along with the lunar elevation, all measured with a sextant and reference to a set of tables prepared by the Greenwich observatory.. Latitude is a lot easier to determine with a sextant, or noting the concurrent rising of pairs of stars of known declination. On the second and third voayges, I believe Cook used a replica of the Harrison H4 clock for determining longitude.

  It’s for neither of those specific things, Yvette. It’s simply a koha of $100m of taxpayer money to piss up against the wall, get the latest utes, iPhones and a lot of overseas travel up the sharp end of the plane.

  Non Maori also used the moon and stars to navigate, but thankfully have long moved on , hence our abilty to fly safely from one side of the world to the other.
  Non Maori also used lunar treatments before advancing to leeches and other things.
  Thankfully now due to scientific advances , modern treatments have more than doubled our life expectancy and the saving of a 90 year old , by surgeons, in our hospitals is more dependent on funding than it is on moon cycles.

  Here we go again. Yet another taxpayer funded gravy train for the Special People to bludge off. ACT must make a hottom line that if it goes with the Nats there will be a full scale public inquiry into all this spending with the bludgers having to justify every dollar.

    There’s a leech farm in the Waikato.
    
    Leech use goes back to the Ancient Egyptians, and now is used in fields including plastic surgery
    
    There is no spiritual mumbo-jumbo about the use of leeches in modern medicine.
    
    Modern science moves forward. For example, use of leeches in treating mental illness was long ago abandoned. But I doubt that traditional Maori medical treatment has abandoned exorcism.

Those who watch SHORTLAND STREET are probably a dedicated audience – select in what they select to watch – so how long should a nursing recruitment campaign last to reach all the potential viewers it might gain a response from, considering too the schadenfreude plot-lines and the disconnect between those and the paucity of conviction in the delivery of the appeal of onscreen characters to potential nurse recruits.

Madonna’s diffident “Yes, nah, oh – yes?” delivery was passē after the second screening, so further versions are urgently needed, or better still: this ridiculously inappropriate campaign should surely just be abandoned.

The cost of this exercise is hidden as “commercially sensitive”, so probably the number of nurses it recruits – if any – versus expenditure, will also never be revealed either. Tricky too when the “campaign” extends from ads to featuring in the storyline itself – just how much does tax-funds pay for?

For Labour. it now seems to serve no better purpose than reminding Channel 2’s primetime audience five times a week that Little has screwed up that there is such a medical staff crisis in the first place – that at least may be helpful to voters, although most people know already how krap Labour is at delivering anything.

And just like scattering Te Reo throughout television news coverage – does it raise affinity, or bred antagonism and aversion? It may be a minor deal but it hints at a greater stupidity.

    I never watch New Zealand TV. But was at my partner’s parents place last night before going to the rugby. They were watching the news. I found it distracting and then annoying. A bit like someone speaking English and then breaking into Arabic.
    
    Why can’t they have the English language news at 1800 and then the Maori language news at 1830. Simple.
    
    Anyway apart from the language problem it seemed like a load of rubbish.

      With two State-supported Maori TV channels it’s unexplained why the State’s TVNZ should have separate programmes in Maori language.
      
      Regardless, it’s linguistic engineering to mix Maori language into English language programmes on State TV.
      
      Woke zealots at State TV and State Radio seem Hell-bent to create a Maori-English pidgin language. This would coalesce into a Creole language, one spoken and understood only in a few islands at the bottom of the world.

    It’s a bit surprising that some indigenous descendants, who give strong impressions of resentment and alienation at the imposition of colonial language and practices, seem to expect much more positive responses from the imposition of indigenous language and practices on the descendants of colonials.
    
    In fact, people from each group have voluntarily incorporated elements of the other group’s language and culture into their lives, but this requires carrot rather than stick, and reflects their varying circumstances – carrot rather than stick – and expectations.

  Only I’d guess that when she was installed after Little she had very little idea beyond the usual debating team platitudes of child poverdee , housing , equalidy , the Treaty ( whose articles she couldn’t even list) and any other Trotskyite notions that were bouncing around in her head , till post election the radical Maori caucus realised they were onto a winner and would have presented her and her inner circle the fine details .
  
  Which she accepted , and conspiratorially , kept secret from Peters and more importantly the nation , till covid gave her the absolute majoridy .

      The original promise was no RUC until 10% of the automobiles were electric. Now the RUC cuts in early next year when EV’s represent less than 1% of the cars (currently 0.8%).
      
      If you bought an EV with the “no RUC till 10%” in mind you could be excused for being unhappy. Especially if you were an early adopter when EV’s were more expensive and before the EV rebates.

We have decided to not watch TV 1 news and weather any more. They don’t want to know that (and especially not our reason for this decision). Lots of our friends and family are doing likewise.
Let them figure out for themselves why all their viewers are disappearing.

The captain of a sports team needs to be someone who can inspire his/her team mates, dominate the opposition, and change the course of a game.

Unfortunately, Sam Cane has none of those qualities.

He’s a nice guy, but I don’t think he is good enough to be in the team, let alone lead it.

    At the rate the AB’s are playing they would stuggle to beat Georgia at present. A few years ago the AB’s would put 50 points on the Argies. If I was running the cutter I would take the players budget, No retainers. Zero for a loss. 50% for a draw. 100% for a win.     I did wonder why a ref from Georgia was in charge of a Tier 1 game, with so much riding on it. And the two touch referees and TMO were all Australian.
    
    I only saw the second half, but seeing the Georgian miss two blatant forward passes by the Argies in the lead up to awarding them a penalty in front of the posts reminded me of Wayne Barnes’ performance in the 2007 RWC. Unbelievable that none of the other officials picked them up either.
    
    That said, the Argies defended well and deserved to win.

    No ball? The ABs had plenty of ball. How do you think they scored two tries! The forwards were reasonable without being earth shattering. But the backs offered little.
    
    But at least that blows the theory that the team needs more Crusaders. There were a lot of Crusaders in the team. And the Irish wizard, Joe Schmidt, was assisting Foster.

  Three quarters of the way through the game with the ABs losing the camera cut to the bench. There a couple of All Blacks were relaxing and having a private laugh.
  
  That epitomises what is wrong with this team. They are mentally soft. They don’t have a strong enough will to win. They play with the same tempo when they are behind.

I went onto Stuff this morning to read the Rugby reports but after seeing various headlines about exposing people with views Stuff doesn’t like I left the site. Stuff has disappeared down a rabbit hole and I don’t think the people working there can see they have become so obsessed with outing fringe beliefs that they are no longer a credible news organisation.

    Yep, the inmates here reckon Whitelock is about the only one trying to inspire the forwards to work together – and his lineout ability is outstanding. He does a tremendous amount of seemingly unnoted work.
    Can’t understand why people want to see him gone.
    A captain has to be either the best player in his/her position or an outstanding leader on and off the field – preferably both.

      Gavel, Sam is still an outstanding player, but is in the twilight of his career. IMO, our issues aren’t with him. He, Scott Barrett and Retallick are the best locks in the country by far. The comments re Taylor and Smith, again, imo, are misguided. Taylor is the best all round hooker in NZ at the moment. The others are beginners who have been selected by Foster on a wing and a prayer. Smith is still the best halfback, until he starts taking a step or two when passing. Sam Cane is a fine player, way above average, but NZ has plenty of those players. Clark isn’t the best wing, Jordie isn’t the best fullback or wing, Tupaea surely cannot be our best 2nd or centre, and our props are just a lottery. Not helped by Fosters constant tinkering with selections. Scott McLeod is lucky to be where he is. Our defence has leaked all season and he wasn’t one of the coaches asked to go.     Scooter Barrett dropped the ball from the kick-off straight into their half-back’s hands. He easily beat a turn-stile-like tackle from the vastly over-rated Aaron Smith and waltzed over.
    
    Despite having a golden opportunity to retake the lead at 18-19, the useless ABs kicked for the corner and dropped the ball a minute or so later. We never retook the lead, and only got further behind through ill-discipline, poor judgement and schoolboy errors.
    
    Foster’s substitutions appeared designed to make it as hard as possible to get the win. Replacing the entire (dominant) front row after only 45 minutes was unnecessary and pointless. He left A Smith on far too long, and only gave Perofeta 60 seconds to “make his mark”. Absolute amateur hour, Foster now has a number of unenviable records:
    
    1. First coach to lose 3 consecutive home games ever – in 113 years
    2. First coach to lose to Ireland at home in a test
    3. First coach to lose a series against Ireland at home (or ever)
    4. First coach to lose to Argentina in a test (Australia 2020)
    5. First coach to lose to Argentina at home
    
    Offers the excuse “Our set-piece didn’t quite work the way we wanted in the latter part, and we probably forgot to play our kicking game.” Probably forgot to play your kicking-game? If only there was the world’s most highly-paid water boy Dane Coles available to go and remind them they don’t have to run head-first into a wall for 80 minutes!
    
    When he becomes the first coach to lose the Bledisloe Cup since 2002, what will NZ Rugby say then?

  I read an article today about Keith Murdoch who thumped a guy on the ABs tour in 1973 and was sent home. I was over there at the time. None of them ever cracked a smile. The papers noted how surly they were and their hakas were a shambles.

  The real problem was the penalty count. Ryan will have that crap out of the game by next week. I saw enough in the forward effort pushing back the argy scrum to know this team is well seeded. Perhaps it was a mistake to not bring Perofeta on late as his playmaking isn’t well known to Argentina. Also, the team penalty of a sin bin meant we lost an aggressive forward when pushing for a try. I’m confident about next week, though I have to give credit to the audacity of the Argentine coaches audacity to suggest on the eve of the test they would win, that might have got into a few heads when one might have expected the coaches to telling the players not to submit to mind games.

Yesterday someone writing for the the NZ Herald moaned and groaned because they couldn’t get anyone connected to Kelston Boys High or St Peter’s College to comment on the forthcoming final of Auckland’s 1A Rugby Premiership.
We went along to the game at Eden Park and it was much better than the test later in the evening.
No music, few penalties, no bad behaviour. St Peters team did a haka before the game & Kelston Boys after they hung on to win by two points. Each team acknowledged the others’ supporters.
The north stand, which was maybe 70% full, emptied out for the following NPC game!
Nothing in the NZ Heraid.

  Could happen Capn. Back in the not-so-long-ago Seniors Minister Tracey Martin floated the idea of state housing for seniors within retirement villages.
  
  “If we can say to a housing developer: ‘You must have 40 per cent of affordable housing when you’re building separate housing’, why are we not having the same conversations with retirement village developers? So, it’s sort of like State housing for our seniors, I suppose, but inside an environment that they should be able to go inside with their peers.”

Have you heard the latest advertisements to promote mask wearing?

“Wearing a mask is an intentional act of kindness to others.”

So rather than providing facts the advertising campaign is being driven off engendering an emotive response. The danger with this messaging is that it vilifies anyone not wearing masks. By implication anyone not wearing a mask is being “unkind.” It also promotes those really extremely illogical mask wearing behaviours:
– people walking on West Coast beaches in masks
– people cycling wearing a mask
– people driving their car wearing a mask
– people out walking streets in masks
– people in massive southerly winds in wellington wearing masks
These Covidian Acolytes are the Uber-kind as they demonstrate their superior morality while they self-flagellate.

I really dislike living in a country full of faux moral pious idiocy. When will we get our beloved country back again? Will we ever?

  I always found that passage very odd. Is there some metaphorical meaning to millstone and the sea that I’m missing or is that Jesus giving excellent advice on how to neatly murder someone and get away with it ? Take a guy out on a fishing trip and he never comes back. A millstone has a nice hole through it, very convenient and the body is never found. You can avoid shedding blood and might even be able to fool yourself into thinking YOU didn’t kill him, it was the sea, the last time I saw him he was fine, just headed straight down.
