      I was in central Government employment during the 60’s and 70’s and was aware that the Departmental “Typing Pool” was commonly referred to as the “Snake Pit.’
      Not because of the attitude of the typists, heaven forbid, but from the “sibilant hissing” which was very apparent immediately prior to the “going home time” at 4.35 pm every day.

    There are a couple of very salient points in that article:
    
    1. The discovery was relatively unexpected, because conventional photochemical models didn’t pick up on its presence.
    
    2. And while scientists don’t definitively know how ozone holes affect life on Earth, researchers are looking into possibilities — and unfortunately, many of their predictions err on the side of negativity.
    
    So their models are completely wrong, and looking in the wrong area, and their immediate reaction is to predict doom and gloom. In their minds, the sky literally has fallen in.

  I was saying the same thing recently. We were more or less told the end of the World was coming because of the hole in the ozone layer. Now it’s disappeared and another disaster is supposed to be overtaking us – Covid!! Before that it was Bird Flu and other dreadful things. I don’t believe anything any more.

  As a person with very fair skin I know that when I am in NZ I have to wear sunscreen for about 6 months of the year just going about my daily business and even then I can still get burnt if I am not super careful. When I am in the Northen Hemisphere I don’t have to wear sunscreen and never get burnt.
  The hole is fixing – although NZ and Australia still have a high skin cancer rate. CFCs have been eliminated excpet China cheats so CFCs are still been pumped into the air.

    CFCs mostly originating from the NORTHern Hemisphere create a massive ozone hole over the SOUTH not North Pole…never made much sense to me but I’m not a scientist.

    Everyone effected by waiting lists and unreasonable wait times in ED, for scans, etc should make a formal compliant to the HDC. Every single person. I certainly will be in ever I need medical care and it is not to the standard that I know it should be.

  There’s a separate authority for Maoris – why does the authority for “Others” need a Maori name? Actually, one authority for the everyone would be a much better idea. And a sensible subdivision under it might include a department for the under-privileged which would include some Maoris, some Pacific Island people and a whole lot of New Zealanders of European descent.

    More correlation that causation I think Nickc2. The current government has presided over the bestowing of many Maori names, and the current government is especially incompetent.
    
    Of course, since most of us are not fluent in Maori, it is possible that the Maori names are incorrect too, which would make them another example of incompetence.

  Mike Hosking is one of the few people in the media speaking out against this government’s agenda and overreach. This morning he mentioned the QC opinion about Three Waters that has just come out.
  
  Public law firm Franks Ogilvie, in an opinion reviewed by Gary Judd QC, lay out the extent to which these claims have been “calculated to deceive Parliamentarians, and when it becomes law, to deceive New Zealanders generally”.It calls the claims of retention of local ownership “false, misleading and deceptive” as “councils are expressly denied the rights of possession, control, derivation of benefits, and disposition that are the defining attributes of ownership”. Gary Judd QC comments in his review of the legal opinion: “When all the lying statements are put together, as [the] opinion does, the government’s effrontery is breath-taking.”

  So what we have is a QC affirming in a written opinion that the government is lying to us. That Parliament is being deceived and New Zealanders generally are being deceived.
  
  It seems to me that three waters is another step along the lines of co-governance. In this case the Maori tribes will control the water. In the case of health, the Maori Health Authority controls the delivery of health to Maori and also has veto powers over the health system for everyone else. So the 15% of people who identify as Maori appear to be getting at least 50% of governance. Which obviously is not right and is unequal representation.
  
  Even more egregiously it seems to me that our country, our society, our system of government is being divided on racial lines. It’s the reverse of the racial segregation of the American South and the apartheid of the old South Africa. In this case it appears that the Maori people will be in charge.
  
  Thankfully we still have people like Mike Hosking to alert us to this demolition of our wonderful country and its laws and its governance. The rest of the media of course are asleep at the wheel. They agree with what is happening or they have been paid to agree with what is happening.
  
  One can only hope that next year we will eject these cultural vandals from office.

      What is Hoskings position now? I genuinely don’t know. I do know there were a lot of people who were sucked in by the fear porn, propaganda and psychological manipulation. Quite a few have realised they were scammed, are angry and won’t get another shot or fall for this again.
      There are others who are in denial. Who are too fragile to admit they got this wrong. Understandable to some extent, not many people like to admit failure. These people need to be helped to understand they are victims of the greatest government fraud ever. That hundreds of millions have been spent to convince them of this. That they can own it, move on and they will get greater respect from others and will also feel better about themselves.
      The people I hold the greatest disdain for and who I will never, ever forgive, are those who are fully aware of what is going on but who enable the continuation of this torture and misery and societal destruction. They do this in the full knowledge of the effects of what they are doing. They do this to protect their careers and their incomes.
      These are the “experts”, the politicians and the journalists who are the reason we are still fighting against this irrational madness.
      
      In particular, this group of liars and corrupt fraudsters need to be exposed and held to account. This recent paper is authored by Michael Baker, Dr Jennifer Summers, Prof Nick Wilson, Dr Lucy Telfar Barnard, Dr Julie Bennett, Dr Amanda Kvalsvig – all from Otago University.
      
      These lunatics want to jab under 5s and mask kids from year 1 on the basis of misleading statistics.

      Had the same in Quebec, Canada in the Late 70s.
      
      I had to go(Kiwi) with anyone from head office (Toronto). to Montreal office. Customers and staff would only speak in French to Canadians, but very happy to speak to me in English…
      
      Went back to Montreal in 2012. Lots of bilingual conversations by groups of locals. They just talked in whatever they felt comfortable with. Often switching in and out of French/English.
      
      Lets hope kiwis also grow out of this fetish of trying to jam the Maori Language down everybodies throats/ears/eyes

    The guy Scott writes about (8.19 post) is part-Maori, but began learning Maori language as an adult.
    
    He was a reporter in some regional local paper, then broke into Woke Stuff writing about, first, Maori issues, then boring detail of his progress in Maori-language.
    
    If he moved out of NZ, he’d have nothing to scribble about.
    
    Scott’s “over-zealous” description of him is an under-statement. Here’s someone who calls the world’s great English language as “to reo Pakeha”. He wouldn’t know that India’s 200 million English speakers alone outnumber the world’s Maori speakers by at least a thousand to one. It’s estimated also that 130 million Africans speak English.

    My question is, if they are not considering providing the best medical care and treatment to the people of New Zealand, just exactly what are they considering?

      My older brother and our dad used to listen to this on the radio when I was a young kid and I could hear them laughing and laughing through the (uninsulated) bedroom wall of the state house we lived in at the time. (House was provided as part of dad’s income as a public servant.)

        A language is only useful if it allows you to communicate. The irony is that in Christchurch, and certainly in Auckland you get through a month of only speaking Mandarin fairly painlessly. It would be inconvenient but it could be done. (For example my GP has Mandarin speaking receptionists. So does the pharmacy I go to.)
        
        But speaking Maori you would have no hope. And even if you found, say, a Maori speaking GP, can the Maori language convey the results of a blood count test, or how to treat eczema using hydrocortisone? (Mandarin works for any concept that is conveyed in English.)

  Really Stuff would perhaps do us a better service by researching how much tax funding goes into supporting Te Reo each year.
  Estimates put it between $200 – 600 million annually, which is rather too vague.
  In supporting Te Reo, exact points of present expenditure and an evaluation of its efficacy would surely be a logical starting point.

        “If somebody asks me how I’m going, I’m going to reply in Maori and if they don’t understand, SHAME ON THEM!” Sure – because grandstanding, indulging in pointless theatrics, making a scene and embarrassing everyone around you is a proven way to make your point and win people over …
        
        I get that he’s trying to make a point – namely, that (in his mind), Maori is the “first language” and therefore it should be used just as much as English is, in every situation. But the simple reality is, it’s not going to happen. Not because of racism, but because of practicality and reality.
        
        There is no need in modern day New Zealand to speak Maori, it’s not an essential or important skill to have; therefore, the only reason for people to invest the time and effort into learning it is because they want to, for their own pleasure. And hey, if somebody genuinely wants to learn to speak Maori, go for it. I certainly won’t stand in their way. But to expect the majority of people in New Zealand to invest a considerable amount of time and effort into learning a language that, the vast majority of the time they won’t use, is arrogant and unrealistic.

  I’ll just say the thing I initially said again, only slowly … I’ll persevere – repeating it for a third time, slowly and more loudly. I will wave my hands a little now, too … The final stage will be charades – acting out emotional states, intentions, my simple wish for a cup of coffee.
  
  Mr Maxwell compares this experience to being in a foreign country and unable to communicate with people because you don’t understand the language. But – as has been discussed many times – how many people in New Zealand only understand Maori and don’t understand English? I’d be willing to bet the number is infinitesimal, if not zero. Compare that to the number of people who only understand Mandarin, which I would guess is quite a few.
  
  His attitude seems to be, “Everybody in New Zealand should understand Maori, and if you don’t I’m going to grandstand and make a scene and quite possibly embarrass you”. Why? What purpose does that serve, other than making some sort of point in your own mind, but embarrassing everyone around you?
  
  If Mr Maxwell wants to spend his time learning another language, good for him. I happen to enjoy spending my time learning to play the piano, which takes time and effort, just as learning a language does. I do this mostly for my own enjoyment and satisfaction, and I don’t expect everybody else around me to be as interested in my hobby as I am. I certainly don’t expect them to learn music theory so I can converse with them about my hobby. Why does Mr Maxwell expect everybody to invest their own time and effort into learning Maori, simply so he can make use of what is – essentially – a hobby?

    Those who may “be overwhelmed with shame and mortified that they can’t speak Maori” may be other Maori.
    I was told by a Maori teacher not to address a person you believe to be Maori, in Maori, for the shame it may engender if they can not reply in Maori. So with that sensitivity, considerable use of the language is compromised.
    So, is a certain element of racism involved in who you will select (profile) to talk to, and if you make a mistake and demean or shame who you talk to, is that also racism?

    I understand a bit about languages. There are are three reasons to learn Maori:
    
    1. You work with Maori communities and you need to give speeches at Marae and similiar settings.
    
    2. You are ‘woke’ and want to impress your woke friends who will be either Green or Labour supporters, living in the wealthier suburbs of Wellington, who like drinking pinot gris and comparing their real estate portfolios.
    
    3. You want a job in the New Zealand public service.
    
    That is it.
    
    On the other hand, you could learn Spanish, German, or Mandarin and an entire new world will open up to you.

    There’s a good article about minority languages in the latest Economist. You can sign up to get a few free articles/month if you don’t want to pay the $500 or so for an annual sub.
    
    Anyway they look at Basque, Irish and Welsh. Irish is the official first language of the republic. A moderate % are familiar with it, a miniscule % actually use it. There was apparently a very funny TV episode of something where the central figure tried to spend a day speaking nothing but Irish. Didn’t work. Welsh is a similar story.
    
    Maori gets a mention as a work in progress. The common feature of these languages is that the users are the very old (who learned it as children many moons ago) and the very young who learn it at school.

    All languages borrow, but few borrow so much and so quickly from one source as Maori has. One of the interesting early borrowings was “puru” for blue.
    
    Maori did not seem to have words to distinguish blue from green. (Absence for words for some colours isn’t unique in languages: some scholars believe the Ancient Greeks confused red and blue.)

        For example, in Old English, “geoluhread”.
        
        A Latin enthusiast might explain if in Latin there are indeed two words for the colour, as some say: reddish-yellow, rutilus; orange, croceus.
        
        More English trivia: Russians seem to distinguish light and dark blue as separate colours, and the Russian language has a word for each (no use giving you the Cyrillic characters here).
        
        Gladstone the English PM for 12 years, was also a keen student of Greek literature, and was prominent in the debate on why Homer wrote of the “wine red sea”. From the interest he created, some early European settlers took interest in the range of colour words in the Maori language.

    It is sad. My Parner’s Father had dementia. Ended up in a rest home, on a mattress on the floor. I was the only one he recognised. Communication was mostly ok, but would sometimes turn to unreasonable demands, and not grasping what we were talking about. Very hard for him, but also hard for the people close to him.

So the herald has an online story today trumpeting how a 57 year-old has a job for the first time in 10 years, working in an orchard, and how wonderful it all is, which is is.

But nowhere in the story does it touch on WHY this man was unemployed for a decade and why (presumably) he lived off the taxpayer for all that time.

  Ten years ago there may have been a legitimate reason why he was unable to work for some time. Unfortunately, the longer people spend not going to work, the less likely it is that will return to it. That is why it is important to engage with people as soon as possible if they are not able to return to work themselves, and to persist in supporting their return to work.   So ‘throughout the entire country’ is a pretty categorical statement for what is purely an opinion that seems counter to current facts.
  
  Our standard of professors does not seem to be great in NZ, based on the ones that get rolled out for comment in our media.
  
  I did discuss with an archeologist that it seems odd the Hasst eagle would not get to the North, when birds reach here from Australia, but he suggested that habitat preferences might that initial population never established themselves in the NI (…that we know of) or else evidence has not yet been found.
  Interesting to note that there are rather less moahunter sites in the North Island than the south, in terms of major moa butcheries, so may be that the larger/largest moa species were more abundant further south. Moa bone that I have found in early-period middens in the north island seem to be partly (if not all) sub fossil bone that might be found in dunes from long dead animals and then turned to fish-hooks. If there were more moa hunting sites in the north island they may have been at river mouths and been lost over the last 6-700 years.
  Taranaki coastal and Mt Camel sites in Northland are some notable North Island ‘moahunter’ sites.
  (Note the term moahunter is a bit deceptive, as defining a time period by diet when sea mammals or fish/shellfish might have been more important for most, however I still use it despite ‘Archaic East Polynesian’ is a much better term for the material culture/artefacts and people in NZ at that time).

  Chris Lusk is NOT arguing that Moa became extinct because of Haast Eagle predation.
  
  He is merely stating that some moa populations had a natural predator…. Haast Eagle – unlike NZ’s deer population.
  
  As Fuzzysnuggleduck notes, Chris Lusk is wrong to imply that all Moa populations were predated upon by Haast Eagle….as this large bird seems to have been confined to southern NZ (South Island and Stewart Island).
  
  Because of the moa-browsing hypothesis for the presence of divaricating plants in NZ, some people have argued that it is OK to have deer in our forests as they are now playing the same ecological role as moa did… by browsing native plants.
  
  Lusk’s work pretty much explodes the moa-browsing origin of divaricating plants … and as such offers no support for the claim that deer are moa -browsing substitutes.

        Many NZ plants are quite obviously evolved to deal with the Moa browsing; the height at which the lancewood changes leaf forms from jagged and long to soft and round once above the browsing height of the largest; Dinornis Giganteus.
        Other native plant undergo change of foliage at height.
        I have quote a few examples of the ‘wiry’ types planted, and the leaves being inside the mass of wiry twigs make good sense as a defence from browsing by beak-clipping.
        This is also why the moa carried gizzard stones/crop stone (to grind the hard twiggy material).
        Swamp finds with moa bones confirm woody coprosma twigs being digested.
        Muehlenbeckia is a another plant I find visually appealing, and I have often pointed them out as being evolved to deal with moa browsing and don’t see a reason to doubt it.
        
        BTW – the presence of moa can be seen by crop stone deposits even when no bones are to be found. The polishing of some types of stone suggests that the stones many have even been polished by more than one bird (as Trevor Worthy suggested to me), if they were ever passed thorugh the body, or ancient moa found crop stone deposits from even more-ancient moa.
        
        Something to look out for in the hollows of sand dunes….distinct patches of what look like water-worn/polished pebbles.
        When such sand hills were accumulated by wind action during the last Ice Age (then low sea levels) anything much heavier than a sand grain is there due to human or animal action.
        It is possible to find anything from human bones, bones from extinct animals through to stone adzes or pieces of greenstone if you are lucky {right place/right time}.

So i googled. Turns out what she’s not telling us is the monkey pox vaccine “JYNNEOS Vaccine” is another vaccine that will be delivered under emergency use authorisation issued in the USA in Aug 2022. The vaccine is older but the eua allows them to deliver it “intradermally” eg between layers of skin. instead of subcutaneous. Intradermally means they can split one vaccine into 5 products which ties in nicely with Wiles story that their is not enough of the vaccine . The EUA will also allow vaccination for under 18 yrs old. I can’t find anything about the vaccine on medsafe. Is this article the PR to prime the public for another EUA in NZ.

If Siouxie Wiles wants us to have trust in vaccines and the medical establishment they should tell us the whole story.

I’ve had a read of the redacted Trump affidavit and further to my comment from Friday, it didn’t mention Trump having any Agency documents. As stated on Friday, that would have meant real trouble for Trump as he doesn’t have a right of access to Agency Documents. That would have been, unquestioningly, a crime that Trump could have gone down for.

If Trump’s lawyers can prove that Trump had a legal right to access the documents he had under the PRA, then the warrant may be found to be illegal. Again, there is no evidence in the redacted affidavit that he was making NDI available or destroying anything.

The sole evidence provided in the redacted affidavit was that he held the documents but under the legislation referenced in the affidavit, he had to have been holding it illegally. There is definitely an argument under the PRA that that’s not the case.

The only way it could get worse is to convert all essential services to electricity (eg ban gas in the home for cooking and heating and ban sale of petrol cars) to double electricity demand.

  That’s nuts. Electricity from a big diesel genset costs about USD $0.2-0.25/kWh at internationally traded cost of diesel. There are a huge number of such gensets around for commercial operations that need backup power – probably enough to stabilize grid. That should provide an easy, and not that much more expensive option to get through a power crisis.

They have published interpol emails between NZ and Canberra that showed Avi from Rebel News wasn’t banned because of a domestic with his wife. It was because they had said he was “posing as a reporter” had links to Chantelle Baker and was “far-right” and had called himself a Jewish Nazi.. (Which was a tongue and cheek response to people calling him a Nazi – where he responded yeah right and pointed out he is actually Jewish ). So it was for political reasons he was banned entry. The govt didn’t want reporters covering the protestor. Avi from Rebel News was banned and Chantelle taken off facebook right before the protests. What is happening to our country?

  AFAIK there was nobody in National who followed the emerging evidence about the vaccine efficacy, which clearly pointed to ‘vaccine passports’ being an absurd policy. I mean if I can keep up with the data, surely National can appoint someone in the Party to prepare ‘weekly briefs’ for all MPs. Hell I would have done it for a modest fee.

      I’ve emailed him again recently asking if he has modified his position in the light of overwhelming new evidence that the jab is far more dangerous than covid for the vast majority of people, particularly kids. It’s been 2 weeks and no response.

The Herald. “Wellington Cyclist 30 cm from Death” after near-miss with countdown delivery driver” segues into a call for cycle lanes and focuses almost completely on the cyclist.

The van may have been too close (hard to tell from the video) but it misses clarifying the law he definitely broke which is overtaking on a pedestrian crossing, one where a woman and baby were about to cross..

The headline should have been “Illegal Overtaking on a Crossing endangers pedestrians and cyclists.”

  Beats me why he wouldn’t be well over on the side, when he can.
  But the truck driver isn’t doing a great job, as he goes over the pedestrian crossing by passing the centreline.

When a Nelson man didn’t hear any results after having a tumour removed, he assumed ‘no news was good news’.

  That annoys me a lot about the health system. Several times I’ve received no communication after tests.
  
  I wait weeks and weeks, finally contact the doctor and get told “there was nothing to report”. Each time when I ask “how do I know you’ve not mislaid my details, entered them wrong, or mail gone astray if I don’t routinely get comms?” I just get a shrug.

    Same here. Have three monthly PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen ) blood tests done. Within 48 hours the results are posted to me on a website called managemyhealth.co.nz.
    
    If the results didn’t show up in a reasonable time I would certainly ask questions.
    
    I feel very sorry for the person who now has a limited time to live but their problem was “assuming everything was OK).
    
    Hopefully that article will save a few lives by causing people to ask if they don’t hear back from their medical tests in a reasonable time.

Apparently “Time Out” (no idea who they are) has placed Karangahape Road, aka K Rd, at number six on their list of the coolest streets in the world.

Yes … well … I suspect the last line “every door leads to something very different” is probably quite accurate; there’s no way I’d want to try entering some of the doors on K Rd.

Seriously, how does this moth-eaten den of debauchery get judged to be the sixth “coolest” street in the world? The sixth most shitty street, maybe …

  Or a street performer/artist/busker/chalk portrait drawer.

  Because the only person who could be charged, the van driver who crossed the center line, was killed in the crash. The truck driver was blameless, however he still has to live with the fact that he was involved in an accident that killed seven people.

  Perhaps you don’t realise that drivers of large trucks are under a lot of surveillance already?
  If they are driving company owned vehicles, there is a significant amount of monitoring going on at many levels, including high tech dash cameras which record everything.
  The police and the driver’s employers will know exactly what happened in that crash and who was responsible for it.
