Pike River Mine
Do Police inquiries need to pin-point –

1 – a source of ignition
If investigations show the first explosion did originate from the main fan or its parts – as some Families have been convinced to believe – and someone is prosecuted, the obvious defence would be that a brass plate seal (now perhaps still sitting on a workshop shelf, if the workshop still exists?) was left-out of the fan’s final assembly, but that, or any other factor that caused static or sparking, theoretically wasn’t supposed to be a problem, because the fan was in a “Non-Restricted” area of the mine, where gas levels were supposed to be negligible.

2 – the source of the gas which ignited
As well as pin-pointing the ignition source, surely it is necessary to explain why a massive amount of methane (1,000 to 2,000 cubic metres of methane – Royal Commission estimated), mixed with oxygen was present in an area where such combination should not exist: the “Non-Restricted” area of the mine.

3 – How will new drill-holes and scans detect the failure of any gas-triggered fan shut-off mechanism –
if such a mechanism is not blasted westward, way to hell into the mine-workings

63. The main fan was designed to shut down in the event of a methane concentration in excess of 0.25% near the fan motor or when temperature or vibration cut-off points were reached, at which point the back-up surface fan was designed to start automatically.

Although the main ventilation fan motor was located in the “Non-Restricted” area of the mine, where gas levels were supposed to be negligible, why did it not shut down if any methane concentration exceeded the set limit?

If a collapse in the goaf area (already mined void) did force a massive amount of methane into the ventilation system to be ignited perhaps when it reached the main fan and that is determined as the ignition point, is the actual fault for the disaster the design of the goaf, without sufficient support to prevent collapses, and should that omission be the target of any criminal prosecution, or does fault lie with the possible fan ignition origin, and it locator, designer, or installer (removing the brass seal plate, or checking the gas automatic trip) or whoever supposedly approved the whole installation, be charged?

The Royal Commission report does point out that there was no ventilation manager. So does responsibility rest with ventilation system designers (particularly as it seems to be the only mine main fan installed underground, in the world) or installers since it was apparently installed incomplete, or those who offered the $13,000 bonus – so miners would ignore their own responsibility as part of the safety reporting chain, and overlook risks which they were so well aware of as existing – or the mine manager because he failed to appoint staff beneath himself to be blamed?

Previous intended drilling in location of the main fan was abandoned because a drilling rig could not be positioned correctly on the surface above. Has that changed?

And will the nitrogen equipment be re-imported from Australia and all the hose-lines be reinstalled “on the hill” to render the interior of the mine inert, so that drilling by re-hired experts on behalf of the Police to determine the cause of the first explosion, doesn’t cause a fifth explosion?

  I don’t understand the whole Pike river investigation ‘thing’.
  
  Labour and NZF cynically used it 5 yrs ago as some sort of election carrot. The promise was a full investigation, getting into the mine and convicting those involved. There was a lot of hinting that the National Party and John Key we colluding with the culprits and that this would be uncovered during the investigation.
  
  Apparently, 5 yrs ago, pike river was a vote catcher.
  
  Now after 5yrs of investigation ends, and 80+ million down the toilet, police miraculously want to restart the process. Why? What has changed? Why wasn’t this stuff done already? Is this just a vote catcher again?

  I think it is well past time that these governments are no longer allowed to use “commercial sensitivity” to withhold information from their people. I know in the USA when the unredacted information comes out it generally shows the government officials of the day to be totally incompetent and worried only about petty things.
  I bet this is the case with our PM but in her case there may be a bit more around shutting down contrary voices.
  I feel the mood is shifting radically. Only anecdotal but a friend of mine was a very big fan of the PM and there were a few photos taken with her on her page. She attended the WOW opening and not one pic of the PM could be found.

  Probably slightly off to the side Maggy, but given Ardern’s speech during the week and the assertion that her “disinformation” efforts include discussions with corporates and not for profits, and now this, could we reasonably question whether she is in discussions with search engines etc to commence the path towards internet censorship in NZ? Her pathological blindness is there for all to see in the UN speech and I for one wouldn’t put it past her. I’ve also had a busy week socially and it’s clear that her 2020 support base has collapsed, and I wouldn’t be surprised if actual Labour support was presently sub 30%. If I’m right I think the next 12 months are critical. If Labour senses they’re in trouble they can go one of two ways – moderate in an attempt to regain the centre, or go hell for leather implementing leftist policies – who will forget Helen Clark’s plan to write off student loans in the lead up to the 2008 election or her mean spirited “right wing bonfire” losing speech? I fear Ardern & co would be much, much worse. Coming back to the internet – might internet censorship be her next step in controlling the media and trying to sway the 2023 election?

    I have been processing strands of information this week. A friend who works in armaments overseas made a passing comment that we could be at war by Christmas. The blowing up of those pipelines and some in the US media saying the US did it. Now Ardern’s very hawkish stance that we will stand by Ukraine. The drums of war are getting louder. This morning I thought what if Ardern took NZ into war next year and used it as a pretext for goodness knows what. Normally I would shrug off such a thought but the way this Government operates with the media I just can’t see them meekly surrendering governance.

If wondering what all those Communications staffers funded by taxpayers do all day, have a looksee at some annual reports.

I was looking at last year’s Kainga Ora annual report (I know, sad life). It is 121 pages long. The first few pages are side-by-side Maori and English. Most of the headings from then on are Maori – first in bold type – and English – underneath not bold. Maori sprinkled throughput.

But wait, there’s more. A lot of results of customer surveys, many positive results proudly displayed. Would the comms staffers be carrying these out in their spare time, or are there other staff responsible. There are a couple of thousand to choose from.

Wonder if they also survey neighbours, and report on complaints. (Maybe I missed that reporting in the 121 pages.)

And who could argue with 3 days to move a native tree 150 metres “to be enjoyed by tamariki and whānau”. No mention of costs.

Our tax dollars at work. And that’s just one report.

  When you give something a Maori name, that’s what you get.
  Call it housing New Zealand and no doubt it will report housing problems, how they were fixed, and what they cost. No doubt there will also be a chapter on Work in Progress, Assumed Risks, and Risk Mitigation Processes to be implemented.
  However, that wouldn’t be what Megan Woods would expect or understand. Her PhD is in New Zealand history and the last thing she would want to see is that historically, she’s been a failure in every Govt position she’s held.

    Sadly, Megan Woods’ PhD is in some obscure gender micro subject (I can’t be arsed with the simple Google search to remind myself what). Her PhD was not in the great themes of NZ history, otherwise she’d know that Labour = failure.
    
    Makes you wonder if there are/ were Labour fans who did a solid PhD in NZ history, concluded that they were wrong in their beliefs & therefore chose to exit, stage right.

Andrea Vance needs to take her head out of our Prime Minister’s arse with her comments on Jacinda Ardern is caring and kind, how can you be these things when you blatantly lie and decieve over problems create by yourself but still use them to blame the opposition.
How can you be kind and caring when you use your power to demean and belittle a young Lass who you blamed for covid-19 getting out of a quarantine isolation facility when you knew it came from the facility, I can go on with many more of Jacinda Ardern’s slime politics but I won’t.
So for Andrea Vance to push that the Prime Minister has built her ability to be in control around being kind and caring is absolute bull shit since day one with her lies on the previous Government having under funded and neglected New Zealand in just about every portfolio since 2008 and just another of her nasty childish catch phases that the population is sick of.

  A chunk of the population are completely manipulable and this won’t change in any meaningful way until enough of us are motivated enough to call out ALL of this bullshit for what it is.
  In person and with no concession.
  
  I could definitely do better but I’m trying. Being a pariah is an unattractive position to take but when it’s the only way of maintaining intellectual honesty and good faith principles in opposition to the lies and gaslighting when they are exposed then so be it.
  
  The majority of leadership and management in all organizations and industries are an absolute disgrace. To be fair though, the majority of Joe and Jane public are deluded about so many things, yet have the audacity to demand everyone conforms to their fear and consensus induced guilt. Most people don’t care because most of them never had and never will have the curiosity to uncover that everything of cultural or political significance is largely captured by narcissists, psychopaths and cowards. The obviousness of which seems exponential to those with their eyes open and integrity intact.
  
  New Zealand is a seriously pathetic collection of people at this point. Mostly bullies or too pussy to stand up for themselves. It’s time … [ Mod .. language .. ]

    She has been here for so long that she must have a residency permit (which is effectively a super visa). If she chose to take citizenship, it would most likely be a formality in her case. But then virtually the only benefit of citizenship is the ability to obtain a NZ passport, now that the NZ government allows residents to have the vote. As far as I know the only ways of losing residency are being out of the resident country for too long or committing a serious crime (required seriousness is proportional to length of residency). Possibly she might return to UK if Liz and the Tories get kicked out.

Looks like the media company that lead the charge on Nationals poor vetting of Uffindel has been hoisted by their own petard with their new show, FBoy Island and the vetting of background of one of the contestants. Not only is the show’s premise pretty disgraceful but Wayde Moore’s previous behaviour doesn’t pass the sniff test despite him being found not guilty. Appears the vetting wasn’t very deep, good old TVNZ.

        Laughing so here is the premise of the show. 3 woman have all the power over who they pick, and at the end of the show if they pick a nice guy then they and the nice guy get to share in the prize money, if they pick the fboy he gets to decides to keep the money for himself or share it with her, the twist is that if he keeps it the woman partner takes it off him and gives it to a charity of her choice

      One of those guys was at school with my daughter and apparently they’ve all known for a while due to him having a modelling career via Instagram etc.
      
      He’s not only devastatingly good looking but is musician (guitar as I recall), and has a double degree in math and physics. He’s also disgustingly nice apparently – so much so that all the girls were teasing him on his Instagram account at some party a year or so ago.
      
      Some people really do just catch all the gifts in the world.

The last time she tried vilifying the protesters at parliament it triggered a big slump in her popularity,

  I also trawled through comments on the various YouTube videos of the speech. About 98 percent highly negative.
  
  There was one supporter that did make me laugh.

I get the impression that some leaders, notably the French president and the Canadian PM humour her. They are happy to be associated with her if the gloss rubs off. The Bank of England is “printing” five billion pounds a day (about $NZ9.98 billion) a day to calm the storm caused by the financial policy of the new PM, Liz Truss.

Commentator Ambrose Evans-Pritchard in the conservative newspaper, the Telegraph, argues that Britain’s Chancellor (Finance Minister), Kwasi Kwarteng, must must take all cuts in income tax off the table until the public finances have recovered.

The Bank of England will stop its emergency buying of bonds on October 14.

Evans-Pritchard writes:

The Bank of England will then face a choice: It can either resume bond purchases, lose all authority, and go the way of the Turkish central bank; or it can raise rates to 5pc or 6pc to try to stem a combined run on the pound and the gilts market, causing a housing crash and a bloodbath of business bankruptcies. Nor is there any guarantee that the latter course would stabilise the financial system.

If NZ’s National Party is prudent, it will stop all comment on a policy including tax cuts until the British financial storm abates.

  The current tax brackets have been in place for a decade and people on middle incomes have moved up into higher brackets. Are you suggesting that the Nats shouldn’t even adjust the brackets in accordance with 10 years of income inflation? What they should have done the last time they set the brackets was index them to inflation with automatic annual adjustments. This absolutely has to be done this time. The added Labour 39% envy bracket should be eliminated too. All this would do put us back to where we were in the relatively halcyon days of the 1st term of the Key Nat government.

    I’m suggesting National should keep quiet about tax cuts until the financial storm in Britain ends.
    
    If Truss’s policy of tax cuts during inflation does prove a disaster National will find it near-impossible to convince voters cuts are appropriate during high inflation.
    
    A key, if not dominant issue, in the 2023 election will be inflation, with middle and lower income voters feeling it in their living costs.
    
    Zealots have quoted Milton Friedman as supporting tax cuts. The Nobel Prize economist, who was an authority on inflation, perhaps the authority, did generally oppose high-tax economies. However, I can’t find any record of Friedman supporting tax cuts while bringing inflation under control.
    
    Inflation is too much money in “circulation”. How can tax cuts reduce that without corresponding cuts in Government spending? Try selling that to voters with the health service failing, crime rampant, the school system crumbling. And at the same time promising to reduce tax for the fewer numbers of higher income earners, voters who are “in the bag” for National regardless.

      As the good man from Infometrics reminded today the Nats policy and Tories’ are like chalk and cheese. The Nats are using money that Labour has already allocated for spending. No fiscal stimulus only arguing about who gets to spend it.
      
      The Tories on the other hand are spending new money, at least until we see the rest of the package dealing with regulations etc.

Daylight saving began in Australia today. It kicks in at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in October, with clocks moving forward an hour, but applies only in these states:

– Australian Capital Territory (Canberra);
– New South Wales;
– Tasmania;
– South Australia;
– Victoria.

Australian daylight saving ends on the first Sunday of April. In 2023, that will be April 2.

At the moment we have a record cost of living crisis leading to record high inflation that will move into Election year 2023 but will be enough to change a Government that has a spending problem .

  Yes it is important for politicians/judiciary/social services to ensure that this criminal and destructive behavior doesn’t become “normalised”.
  
  Otherwise these young crims will have no fear of the consequences when they are adults, and will continue to exploit the next generation of youngsters to carry this on.
  
  It needs to be stopped. Now.
  
  (How? Security guards and Police allowed to use force. Shop owners too. Public allowed to intervene without being charged. Youngsters not to be released when caught, instead they need to be sent to a special institution with the appropriate wrap around services, psychological and educational services to help them for their future integration back into society. Punishment for those that continue to be aggressive. Community services work each week eg from picking up rubbish to removing graffiti etc. Families to visit in weekends only. Social visits to parks and beaches etc once they behave. Or something like this. Will require Govt investment. Kind of like Bill English’s Social Investment? Outcomes to be measured and ongoing community followup)!

A climate activist has sparked fury by pouring a bucket of what she says is human faeces over a memorial to a beloved UK figure in a bizarre protest over the use of private jets.

Maddie Budd, 21, vandalised a memorial to Captain Sir Tom Moore, a World War II veteran who rose to fame early in the COVID-19 pandemic by walking laps of his garden to raise money for the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). But nowhere does it mention about the problems that banks and other lenders might face.
That headline writer needs a decent laxative. He/she is obviously full of shit.
For some silly reason it brought to mind that placard I saw at a Teachers’ protest march a few years ago.
“Our countries teachers are the best.”
