Peter Lane

Audrey Young’s at it again, rating Labour Ministers in the Herald this morning. I won’t link because it’s premium as usual but the ‘stars’ are Robertson, Sepuloni, Brylcreme Boy and Verrall all rated 8 but they are dwarfed by the 9 for Damien O’Connor.

Some of the comments are truly nauseating and show how out of touch with reality Audrey really is.

I must admit my first thought was that the ratings were out of 100.

Time to put your feet up and bow out Audrey.

  More like “hides” with experience – MIA during the Parliamentary protests and “Antarctica” anyone? Anyway here is another doozy:

  Seriously? I wouldn’t call spinning, deflecting, word-soup waffling and quickly turning her head to a different reporter (to shut the questioning down) as “impressive” traits! As for “trounces” Luxon it’s interesting to compare that with reality i.e. actual footage of QT usually has Luxon giving Ardern a good thrashing of reality, all for Ardern to give a glib answer with an insult at the end … and Audrey’s fan club think that’s “trouncing”?

  Seriously this is not made up, not only did Audrey say that … she believes that!

  Willie: “Combines strong advocacy with pragmatism in Maori development”. “Kudos for trying to explain co-governance policy”.
  
  What planet is Audrey on? More like motor-mouth Willie bad-mouths rather than explains!
  
  Mr “River of Filth”: “Excellent minister. On top of portfolios. Combines good public communications with attention to policy detail and promotion of party values. Appeals to the base. Especially valuable in sorting out immigration in past five months. ”

        These measures will go some way to restoring the (capital gain driven) profitability associated with selling houses to each other. Might not do a lot to encourage construction of new rental stock …
        
        So I’m a bit at a loss to figure what the “market sorting it out” will look like.

    Sold by their kiwi (?) owners. Should we make this illegal or what? The anecdotal stuff I heard from a couple of cockies was that the foreigners walk up the drive and offer up to 2x what the farmers thought the place was worth.

Finally, we got the word: ‘Yes it’s okay, but don’t tell anyone.’ They thought that the headline ‘Māori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples has flown secretly to New York’ sounded good.

“Sounded good”? – perhaps a lame answer. Under what context would secrecy have “sound good”?

Simple question – What was the real reason “Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples flew secretly to New York for his speech to the United Nations”?

And what does it mean “NZ does U-turn on rights charter”?

OK – that’s two questions

If you look at NIWA’s website you will see reference to RCP8.5 and RCP 6.0 as potential scenarios for NZ’s climate. RCP is the ‘projected pathway for the planet’s temperatures’.

The interesting thing is that RCP8.5 and RCP6.0 were virtually ignored in the last COP meeting and are completely missing from the working papers for COP27 about to start in Egypt. Officials in the IPCC have had to admit their future predictions of 4 to 6 degrees of warming were wildly wrong. Embarrassed, they have quietly dropped them.

But not the alarmists in NZ. Check your local council’s policies for example on coastal issues and you will find RCP8.5 is the basis for determining housing near the coast. Right throughout central and local government these extreme scenarios are used as the reason for policies.

The IPCC and our officials always knew RCP8.5 and RCP6.0 were ultra-extreme and simply impossible. Yet they used language like RCP8.5 is “business as usual”. Their deception is evident when you realise that for RCP8.5 to happen we would have increase coal consumption by 500% and take no mitigation measures. There is not that much recoverable coal in the world and mitigation had already started. Pure fraud.

How much more backtracking will occur as temperatures fail to go up as predicted? No increase now for 15 years or so. How much longer can officials and local scientists hoodwink us using predictions that have been abandoned because they are simply bogus?

  If the authorities cannot admit their Covid actions were wrong, there is absolutely no way they will back down on climate Armageddon. So many people have built their careers on it.
  I wonder when the realisation of both the financial and lifestyle cost to the average household of Net Zero becomes public knowledge, whether there will be a popularist revolt. Currently, it is already about 10% of both your power and fuel bill, just in direct costs. The retrograde taxes transfer money from the poor to the rich. All those carbon credit pine forests planted on farmland are a good example.

    What I find a bit strange is that the power companies such as for example Meridian, which don’t operate any thermal plants also increase their charges to allow for ETS. But then again, what do I know being just a simple engineer.

      Meridian has to buy options from Genesis to get generation from Huntly to service its customers for when the South Island lakes are low. They call on that option more often than people realise. The cost of carbon charges for Huntly are probably around $100/MWh, depending on the composition of its coal.

The cable might be rated at 1000MW, but Transpower doesn’t like it operating above 750MW because more than that, they have to carry the security charges for being the largest point of supply on the grid.

      Thats why I invested in the power companies when they were partly privatised. And I have done very well. I treat the dividends as an offset to my power bill and the tax free capital gains as my earnings. Most Kiwisavers will be partly invested in these companies so I treat my direct investment as a top up.

    NZ wouldn’t be any different (my friends in the electricity industry tell me that NZ’s infrastructure would struggle if EV uptake took off a bit more, it needs significant (as in unbelievable) amounts of investment …. and over a very long period of time. It’s unpractical as we can’t afford it!

        Now there are other tides called ‘Bore Tides. I have not seen it in Alaska, but people surf the bore tide coming into Turnagain Arm in Alaska.

        I think that is unlikely. If New Zealand withdrew from the United Nations Framework on Climate Change, we would be the only nation globally to do so. There is no doubt that we would face trade boycotts. Better to take modest mitigation actions using the most efficient policies. Such a course would impose a tiny fraction of the costs of the Government’s current policies.
        
        At the end of the day what New Zealand does makes no difference. So do as little as possible as efficiently as possible.
        
        Trump is different. New Zealand is not the United States.

      They seem to mix environment and ‘climate change’ together. They say that any policy we implement must be effective, but we already know that _anything_ we do will have no measurable impact on the climate. Just read (if you can stomach it) the climate change report produced by Rod Carr.
      Still, ACT are probably the best of a bad bunch wrt policy. (Chris shudders a little bit)

  In my 73 years of using Mission Bay and its beach I’ve detected no rise in the water level. Sure it may have risen a little – and it might have dropped as far as I can see. The weather is certainly changing, as it always has. Why are we trying to show that we’re leaders in the carbon reduction race? Isn’t CO2 a vital part of our world? And how do we pay for our welfare and health demands and reduce milk and meat production? So many questions. Bugger all answers. So many theories. Bugger all facts. Someone said years ago that NZ should be a fast follower. That sounds very sensible.

    I live on the coast with a seawall at the bottom of the garden.
    According to NIWA the sea level has risen 20mm in the last 20 years, so 1 mm per year.
    I would be unable to detect a 20mm (2 cm) increase in the sea level. It would be lost among the usual tide fluctuation and normal wave patterns. I reckon it would require about a 5 cm rise before I could reliably detect it. A 5 cm rise would be evident at the highest of tides.
    So I think anecdotal statements such as the level of Mission Bay by just visiting the beach are not a particularly reliable guide. A significant amount of rise has to occur before we can readily detect it by casual observation.

      Nothing noticeable in the previous 70 years, but if believe the fearmongering from ‘news’ outlets like One News we’re going to see 30-50cm rise within a few decades (or was it by the end of this decade?).
      Hands up who thinks the sea will suddenly start rising an order of magnitude faster than current rates. Anyone?

        And that graph is just one example of what tells me that reports about climate change are mostly fearmongering, bullshit and outright lies. It took about 1 minute to find that graph of actual data (not garbage from a climate model), and it shows nothing scary at all, and actually contradicts the claims of the supposed experts that tell us that we’re in a crisis.

      Drowning Pacific countries is one of the justifications for a massive change in policy internationally. While my use of Mission Bay is not at all precise, it is surely as good an indication of what is going on as much of the “information” behind much climate change policy. Of course we should not base our national policy on Cassandra’s 73 years of beach use but let’s not shoot ourselves in the foot over this. Man’s effect on the planet is measurable eg we know how much deforestation has occurred; man’s effect on climate much less so. Let NZ be a fast follower, not a leader.

The good people of Southland/Otago manage to cope with a 23+ deg difference each year without mass deaths or extinction.
      
      Yes, climate is likely changing. Yes, human activity has likely accelerated that process significantly. Yes, we should take practical actions to stop that.
      
      But the movements we’re being alerted to are relatively small compared to the normal environmental ranges, and very small compared to the range humans have proven they can survive in (Inuits to Touaregs).
      
      So I don’t see why there’s a need for hysteria, such as we’ll no doubt see at COP27.

        That is not how global mean temperatures work. 20,000 years ago, the South Island of New Zealand was covered in glaciers. Mid latitude areas of the world were between 6 and 10 degrees colder than today. That is all. The point is that a 5 degrees change in the global MEAN temperature is a very very big deal.

        At one stage central Otago was a sub-tropical lake. Ranfurly, as we know it, was underwater and there were crocodiles.
        
        At another stage Otago, and much of the South Island, was covered in glaciers.
        
        Climate does change. We (humans) are doing things that are pushing that process faster. I support the plan that we should change our ways.
        
        But I don’t support the apocalyptic nonsense that we get from the Greens, Greta Thunberg, and the other climate doomsayers about how this will/could be an extinction event etc etc.
        
        If Wellington gets 2 degrees warmer it will be like Auckland (where people are not dying of the temperature). If Auckland gets 2 degrees warmer it will be like Sydney (where people are not dying of the temperature).
        
        If we (big collective humanity we) are really motivated to stop extinction level events then there are a lot of others things that are more important – like access to clean unpolluted water as a simple example.
        
        Perhaps unpopular opinion: The biggest problem we face as a planet is over-population. If the Earth had 5 billion people instead of 8 billion then a host of problems (climate change, famine, water access & quality etc) would be resolved.
        
        For example, Bangladesh has 55% of NZ’s land area, much of it unproductive, but 165 million people. That’s nuts.

      Isn’t that the whole point? That is 500 mm in 500 years. I agree that this would have adverse effects. But think of the other risks to humanity that will unfold over the next 500 years. For example:
      
      – Decline of fresh water
      – Collapse of ecosystems and loss of biodiversity
      – Chemical and plastic pollution
      – A major pandemic (I mean a real one – with a fatality rate of > 1 percent in healthy working age adults)
      
      So yes sea level rise is a problem. But there are lots of real and potential problems. IMO it receives disproportionate media attention compared to other threats to humanity.

The Government will on Monday consider the next steps in developing a plan for Aotearoa to realise its international obligations around Māori self-determination.

Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson will take a paper to a Cabinet committee with feedback from Māori on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), and seeking approval start drafting a plan.

Following Cabinet sign-off, likely by April 5, work will begin work on a draft Declaration plan, scheduled to be released for consultation from June, with the aim of having a final plan signed off by the end of the year.

Before the Labour Party Conference gets into full swing today and Jacinda Ardern our Prime Minister and her Deputy Finance Minister Grant Robertson start their excuses and the blame game for their stooges the media to smear the National Party over trust let your memory go back and remember how honest the Leadership of the Labour Government have been.
Remember how Grant Robertson the finance Ministers first Budget was hacked and how quick it was for him to blame the National Party for it and the leaks that followed only to find out it was one their Government’s Advisors that was responsible.
Then we have the Covid-19 slush fund that has twice been used to shuffle millions out of a fund set up to help the Government control health and financial happening that the Pandemic caused , not as a slush fund to buy votes to keep the Labour Party in power. Paying millions for School Lunches for many students, Camera’s on our Fishing fleet to stop the pillage of undersized and illegal amounts of seafood in our oceans, the Housing Excellaration Fund and Kainga Ora to help build the thousands of houses that were promised before Labour were elected as the Government.
Then we have the latest 70 million swiped out of the Covid-19 fund to be used bribing the Public over the contentious Three Water Policy that is dividing New Zealander’s.
So for Grant Robertson and Jacinda Ardern wanting to establish themselves being ‘Trusted’ more than Chris Luxon and the National Party is a joke , so why would try to compare when you have yourself have been dishonest with a fund set up for Covid-19 that you will leave Generations to pay for because of your lust to stay in power.

  The precedent was set when they took 1 billion dollars from the COVID fund to finance the 25 cents reduction in petrol excise. I appreciate everyone was happy but let’s face it, the fuel excise cut had nothing to do with COVID.
  
  You can’t cheer when they use the COVID fund for something you like and then be surprised when they pillage it for crap policies. The fact that they did the latter comes as no surprise. They deliberately specified the Appropriation description as a “Multi purpose appropriation”. They can spend it on just about anything without breaking the law. National did not object to the wording of the Appropriation. Now we see the consequences.

    In round numbers the government takes about half of the price we pay at the pump.
    When the price was, say, $2.20 they were getting $1.10. With the “real” price now being $3.20 they would be getting $1.60, but with the 25 cent discount they “only”get $1.35 per litre.
    So, as I see it, there is no cost at all to the government. Just less of an increase. How is that a cost to the government?

      The petrol excise is FIXED. It does not change as the price of petrol changes due to changes in the oil price and the exchange rate.
      
      The petrol excise is 45.024 cents, 25 cents less than the previous rate of 70.024 cents. That amounts to about $1 billion in lost revenue by January 2023, when the 25 cents will be reinstated

    I used to live in a house that overlooked a busy street and right across the road was a popular fish n chip shop.
    One evening as I sat on my verandah in the evening sunshine with a beer a squabble started between an older guy and a young guy.
    The old guy was waiting for someone to vacate a parking space. The young guy swooped in and grabbed it. The old guy got out of his car. They argued and he hit him through the window & keyed his car. The young guy got out of his car, thumped him, left him lying on the footpath and drove off.
    I rang the police and said I wanted to put a word in for the old guy. They said seeing as he resorted to violence first he was in the shit.
    A couple of days later the young guy came to my house and asking if I’d be a witness.

Not sure which council policies you’re referring to. Down South they don’t seem to have any policies on building houses on the coast. Plenty of new houses on the coastal strip between Waldronville and Brighton just south of Dunedin and more being built.

  Everything is wrong about deliberately subsidising tree planting to suck up CO2.
  1. It does not deal with the underlying CO2 emissions.
  2. Trees burn, get windblown, give off CO2, harbour pests, destroy soils.
  3. Wreck local communities.
  4. Are unlikely to ever be harvested – the money is in the subsidy not the sale and most will be uneconomic given distance from a port
  5. Rely on capricious political decisions for subsidies to keep going. A change of govt could leave huge areas waste.

      The kids are getting educated off the farm, starting families, buying houses and deep into a career. The parents put the call out for who wants to come back the farm. It will be valued then wowza the interatence is 3 or 4 mill each. Sheep daggs or take the cash?

So let me see if I can get this right.

Tuku Morgan has just been appointed as Chair of the iwi group for 3 waters for Auckland and the Far North. He is also from Tainui which says the Waikato river is basically theirs.

Under the Te mana wai statements, Tainui could say that as the Waikato river is scared, Auckland either can’t have any water from it or can have water at a price. Then as the Chair of the Northern entity ( which seems to be deliberate to thwart Wayne Brown), he could say well yes Auckland needs the water but it can only have it if it cedes us proprietary rights and loads of cash.

Or have I got it wrong?

    They can do lots of things without passing legislation. They are likely establishing a “business unit” in DIA. They did the same thing before the legislation was passed to set up the Climate Change Commission. They established the “Interim Climate Change Commission” and gave it some office space in the Ministry for the Environment.

    Interesting how Labour uses “race” when it suits them, in this case it was also to attack National because they setup NZ’s first Maori television channel trial called Aotearoa TV and Labour succeeded in killing it off.

  Cas, I can not understand how Tainui can claim the water in the Waikato either or can charge Auckland for it., The Waikato Rises rises out of Lake Taupo and all the water that flows out of there, comes from Tuwharetoa claimed regions, with little input from Tainui.
  
  So where & when does the water from Tuwharetoa region (Lake Taupo & the Waikato River source) become Tainui water and is there any payment to Tuwharetoa from Tainui for this water or are Tainui just claiming all the water that comes off Ruapehu, Tongariro and the Kaimanawas?

I remember when

The Pegagsus Beach fire highlights the problems that occur when pine plantations are involved in forestry fires.
The available resources and safety precautions are something that needs to be carefully considered.
If we allow large areas of ‘permanent’ pine forestry what are the dangers after a ‘carbon sink’ reaches the end of its productive life.

I remember when

Since methane only lasts in the atmosphere for around 10 years, reducing methane emissions could contribute to slowing global warming sooner.
Incidentally, why do we never hear/see anything in the media about deducting the 2012 amount from the 2022 total.
So basically, the only (or at least the greater part of) methane in the atmosphere is from the 2013-2022 period.
Our farmers will be paying for methane that could be less than they produced 10 years ago.
At the very least, the amount from 10 years ago should be subtracted from their annual producton.
If we include their circular CO2 and trees planted since 1989, they may well be owed money.

International Mining and Resources Conference in Sydney: Hon Madeleine King, MP.
“Last financial year the sector exported $422 billion worth of resources to the world, nearly 70% of Australia’s total goods and services exports.
Net Zero cannot be achieved without the resources sector.”

Statement from the Conference suggested the World would need 6X as many mines , as there are at present, if we want to reach the Net Zero Carbon goal.

Whilst Labour MP’s are preaching to the converted at their conference, National is continuing with candidate selections for 2023.

I had hoped to attend the Rangitikei selection this afternoon, but have other commitments. It will be an excellent battle, and whoever comes through, the electorate will be well served.

Tomorrow the Hamilton West by-election candidate will be chosen, and again, delegates are spoiled for choice with three outstanding candidates. With former Hamilton East MP David Bennett retiring at the election, there may be a second chance for the unsuccessful candidates.

The quality of those putting their names forward for selection by National is outstanding. They are going to have a very strong team next year.

    But our Finance Minister told Heather du Plessis Allan only a couple of weeks ago that the govt been signalling for months that interest rates will be going up so people have had months to prepare.     25 years ago Starship used to have a fundraising mascot of a bear – don’t know if they still do. I belonged to a dog club where the breed of dog was often “mistaken” for bears, so we offered our dogs to be living mascots during their appeal; to wear “saddlebags” and collect donations.
