People denied their vote, as voting machines go down in multiple states. The official trying to explain one outage is embarrassing.

Technology can and does fail, but it is difficult to accept benign explanations for these failures given the available time to test, and given the constitutional importance of the right to vote.

      The UN at COP27 have come up with another Climate Change scam. This will see developed countries like NZ who emit 0.2% of global emissions pay billions of dollars a year to developing countries like China who emit 28% and the other developing countries who emit 31% of emissions. Its called Reparations or as some dont like that word they use Loss and Damage payments.
      Some will remember the old North South agenda from years ago. That failed so now they have renamed it and repackaged it. It is a Trojan Horse to transfer wealth from the West to the East. The Ardern Regime will sign up with gusto with the Nats not far behind. Our only hope is ACT will make not signing a bottom line.

  Having been a Returning Officer IMHO our paper based General Election system is the best. Many people involved in every stage of the count make it impossible for cheating and fraud. All stages are double checked by different sets of people so the chances of error are very small as recounts over the decades have shown.
  The US system on ther other hand is open to cheating and fraud.

      As an aside, lastman above has noted that it is almost impossible for our paper based system to be corrupted. While the population of the US is of course 100 times greater than ours, I have never understood why they use these “voting machines” which clearly, at the very least, seem prone to error, rather than paper ballots with “ticks and crosses” as here.
      
      Can someone please explain why they can’t use our paper based system, albeit with 100 times the number of counters as we employ to count the votes?
      
      As a further aside, I caught a short clip of Trump the other day also calling for paper based system.

    I agree that our paper based system is better.
    
    But I also note that many US elections have lots of positions that are being elected, all on the same voting ballot. Paper based systems get pretty slow when there’s 20 or more votes to be tallied on each paper.

      Try voting in NSW, that’s a nightmare. The voting paper is the size of a tablecloth (metaphorically speaking). It’s so daunting, there are even people running up and down the queue of voters handing out ‘How to Vote’ cards (for their particular party of course).
      Their system is also open to abuse even though it’s handraulic. People still vote for the deceased, steal an identity, and vote early and vote often (at more than one Polling Station).
      Voting is compulsory and a fine is imposed if you don’t vote. I was fined once, even though I was out of the country ATT. I should have voted early.

    Agreed. I have been a polling place manager over three elections. The counting protocols and the number of people visibly involved makes polling place based fraud all but impossible. That and having an actual electoral roll.

        There are electoral rolls, but in Dem stats particularly, they are not updated regularly, so many dead people still vote, and those who moved out of state still get voting papers sent to them. The Dems just love it.

    I would have thought our advantage in general over many other countries is that elections are run by the Electoral Commission, and independent bunch of public servants with no interference by politicians.
    In America, for example, each state is different, but the Chief Elections Official is generally elected or appointed by the Governor. Red flag right there.
    We never have long queues at polling booths.

    It sounds like a great idea at first, but its actually inconsistent with what the government signed up for. As maori are a smaller percentage of the population, they would always be subject to the tyranny of the majority. Maori interests would only be accepted if the majority wanted it. That hasn’t worked out too well over the last 182 years.

  In most countries around the world most people have a right to appeal whether denying the facts or harsh sentences, now I am not saying this animal didn’t do it or agree with what he has done ,
  Our Prime Minister was prepared to take the kudos and fame for the way she handled the situation and let’s face that was one of the reasons of how her kind and caring policy became known world wide , but is not prepared to have him appeal.

  I doubt there is any need to lose any sleep over this. It is generally difficult to withdraw a guilty plea and would seem even more difficult to do so when he (or his lawyer) did not challenge the evidence summary the judge would have used for sentencing. So the chances of there being a trial would be pretty well zilch. He could well be given leave to 1 out of time his LWOP sentence but he faces a difficulty in that did not seemed to have 3t2asked his lawyer to argue against LWOP. Any sentencing appeal would presumably along the lines that LWOP is contrary to Bill of Rights Act, United Nations conventions etc. He would not physically appear before the Court of Appeal (the best he could hope for is a one way video link). The sentence could be amended to life with a 25 to 30 non parole period but that would not matter too much as he would be immediately 501’d to Australia if granted parole. The trial/ sentencing judge covered his tracks pretty well to minimise the chances of such appeals being successful.

    The entire MWD was scrapped. It cost the government a fortune in severance pay and then a lot of people I knew immediately picked up work with private companies who did the same work for the government as consultants.

      the Minsitry of Works actually did something (as well as leaning on shovels). They also trained a lot of very good engineers.
      You can’t apply that to the various woke departments, such as wonmans affairs, childrens commissioner, human rights commisioner and plenty of others can go and noone would notice. Having done work with MBIE and the Minstyr of Education and Kianga Ora, there is massive wastage and incompetence in those departments, whcih increases fees for dealing with them. We coudl reduce the Civil Service headcount by 25% easily.

I’m somewhat confused, and that confusion makes me feel like something is amiss.

On the “homes.co.nz’ website, they show a ‘value’ for your home.

How that is done is a mystery to me.

I have monitored the movement in our own home value over the last few years.

Sometimes the value goes up, and sometimes it goes down. (Thats normal)

The confusion I have is that there is a house 5 doors down the street – similar in value,
but not the same as our value.

Every time when our value goes up (say 10 grand) their value also goes up by the same amount.
Every time when our value reduces (say by 10 grand) their value also reduces by the same amount.

How do they determine this ‘delta value’ ?

      Filipinos always top of the list if we have rental vacancies. Unemployed not so much, though HR Act doesn’t allow discrimination on employment status. (Just means zipping the lip.)
      
      We have hired several unemployed over the years, given them a chance to upskill. A couple took the opportunity, a couple ripped us off, most on the downside of average. We don’t bother any more. Cheaper and easier to reduce the size of the business.

    I would suggest there are likely to be very good reasons why you wouldn’t want to have those people driving your buses.
    There are few unemployed people in the right places that would fit the bill and they’re probably hanging out for something better. I was unemployed a couple of times over the years when the construction industry was in the doldrums. I certainly wasn’t going to retrain in some occupation that wouldn’t pay the bills. In the meantime I was an unemployment stat.

        The unemployment rate is a sham, when there are more people on benefits than ever. There was even charting on so-called unemployment rate and benefits (including ‘job-seeker’) where the trends show an inverse relationship.
        Basically, the government is blowing smoke up our arses again, and we have a larger unproductive sector than before the most Open and Transparent(tm) took the driving wheel.
        The lack of kids in school, the increase in youth crime, the growth of gangs – the actual incident we read about and SEE; this is the real state of the nation.
        BTW – gunshots down the road from me yesterday, road blocked, armed offenders deployed. Nothing in the papers even though I heard what I thought was a semi-auto, and then what was clearly 2 discharges from a shotgun, before I went out to see the blockade and the men in SWAT-style gear.

Rt Hon JACINDA ARDERN (Prime Minister): Yes, particularly our work to support New Zealand families manage cost of living pressures by improving access to childcare. This policy reverses National’s freeze on the income threshold for childcare eligibility; it means 10,000 more children will be supported, increasing coverage to more than half of New Zealand families. A family with two parents both working 40 hours a week on $26 per hour, with two children under five, will now be eligible for $252 per week from 1 April 2023. This is 10 times the amount those parents would receive under National’s $11 billion tax cut plan. At a time when families are feeling the cost of living spike, we’ve provided targeted support to New Zealanders through these uncertain economic times.

Christopher Luxon: Can she explain to the New Zealand public why, in the middle of a cost of living crisis, her Government is merging TVNZ and Radio New Zealand (RNZ)?

Rt Hon JACINDA ARDERN (Prime Minister): Of course, our cost of living focus is on easing the pressure for New Zealand families, and I reference just one example in the childcare assistance; that is where our focus is. If the member wishes to talk about public service broadcasting, more than happy to do so, but I see that as quite separate from the issue of the cost of living for most families.

Christopher Luxon: Does she agree with Willie Jackson that this merger is “not just about the dollars, dollars, dollars”; it’s about “a change of culture”?

Rt Hon JACINDA ARDERN: I would hope that, across this House, we could agree that New Zealand benefits from having a strong public service broadcasting presence. I’d hope that we could all agree the likes of the ABC and the BBC have demonstrated their value in their respective countries. We’ve had our own model. The unfortunate situation we’re in, and those media sitting in this gallery will know—traditional forms of revenue for TVNZ are in decline. We have recognised that there is an issue, we need to provide greater flexibility for those entities, and that is the solution we’re seeking. It is not in any way deterring us from what is top of mind for New Zealanders at the moment, which is not public service broadcasting; it is the cost of living. I’m fascinated that the member has chosen not to focus on that presently.

Christopher Luxon: Does she think spending $370 million to merge TVNZ and Radio New Zealand, when that is greater than the combined value of both of those entities, is a responsible use of taxpayers’ money?

Rt Hon JACINDA ARDERN: Two points: one, we already also additionally fund content through New Zealand on Air, and the funding the Member has just mentioned consolidates some of that funding. Two, as the revenue declines for TVNZ, unless we find ways to better support them, they will come to the Crown for support. We are trying to get ahead of these issues, ensure strong public broadcasting in New Zealand, and allow them to be as nimble as possible in the changing environment. But, again, over the weekend when we had the opportunity to talk about the thing that was top of mind for us as a party, it was the cost of living. Going into the next election, it will be the cost of living; it will be the economy. The member doesn’t seem to want to talk about his policies in that regard; I am more than happy to talk about ours.

What the transcript doesn’t show, of course, was the Prime Minister getting rather agitated yesterday, when questioned by Luxon and later by David Seymour, during the same question. She clearly wanted to set the agenda, but at Question Time, that is not her prerogative. Interestingly, she left the House immediately after Q2 concluded.

Perhaps Chris Luxon might humour the PM today (if she shows up; she’s off overseas again later this week) and quiz her about the cost of living crisis. Then again, he might not. After all, asking whether she stands by all her statements and policies gives the LotO considerable latitude, and there are plenty of statement and policies that deserve scrutiny. But Luxon will make that choice, not the PM.

  Why is she banging on about “public broadcasting”? TVNZ is a commercial broadcaster, owned by the government. This may have once made sense but it is now an historical artefact. There are now hundreds of choices for video news and entertainment. If TVNZ has declining advertising revenue it means less people are watching. Either change the content or shut it down.

    I made the point a decade ago on this forum that no government would sell TVNZ (or now the TVNZ-RNZ beast) because there would be no buyers for them – irrespective of the fact that Labour won’t do it because they like having a big MSM friend and National because they’re a pack of useless squishes on such matters.
    
    Instead it will become just another government department dependent on government money and at some stage a future government would have to shut it down because there’s nobody left who watches, listens and cares about them. Judging by the under-40’s viewing/listening habits I’m picking 2040 as the date the get closed down.

I suppose that if you think fossil fuels are wrecking the planet (despite all evidence to the contrary), then you declare a climate emergency to justify all sorts of pointless/reckless/damaging spending and impositions on farmers and suchlike, then the next (il)logical step is to realise that these evil fossil fuels (that have given us the lifestyles we now enjoy) have somehow damaged other countries that still haven’t made good use of them, and so we must compensate them.
The idiocy and irrational thought that goes into the climate scam knows no bounds.

  Some years ago I spent a few weeks at Surabaya anchorage in Indonesia. On most days the visibility was about 100 metres or so. Due to smog. The smog was caused by home cooking using wood – not a fossil fuel.
  But then again, there’s no need to go to Surabaya to experience this. A winter trip to Alexandra or Arrowtown will do…

    Similarly in Africa where switching to kero for cooking had many benefits:
    * less smoke and associated health issues.
    * less people getting burned in kitchen fires
    * stopped deforestation yielding better outcomes for wildlife, reduced run-off and flooding.
    * reduced transportation problems. Transporting firewood is a major hassle in 3rd world.
    * less vermin brought into towns and dwellings in firewood and less firewood piles etc for the vermin to live in.
    * instead of searching for firewood, people could earn money or go to school etc (normally a job for young females).

What I cannot understand is how this works, because, of the roughly 17 percent who are Maori, who may think “Jez, what a good idea it would be to vote Labour”, how many of the other 83 percent will think “Yeah … nah! Fuck Labour! – who else is there I can vote for?” and think of Seymour because Luxon is slow off the rank.
I suspect moves like this one with Immigration, may make the Maori Elite happy but below them are those who Maggie Wassilieff covers in quoting Michael Bassett – “… the group [Ardern] claims she wants to help. And they cost us all a fortune not just in benefits paid but in the damage her policies do to society. The record numbers of truants from school; the kids who get beaten up and sometimes killed by Mum’s de-facto; the gang recruits; the ram-raiders, some as young as 7. Most of them come from the ignored 100,000. … and then add those of the the 83 percent who really are pissed off by this Immigration move and others like it.

How do you do the electoral internal polling or math – supposed gains and likely losses – on that.

  In the past I have occasionally read Trotters blog and despite not agreeing with a lot of what he says, he is an unashamed old school socialist, at least he is willing to nail his colours to the mast and call it as he sees it.

  Undeterred, the PM continues to insist that hers is a government in the finest Labour tradition. In her speech to the party conference on Sunday, 6 November 2022, she reiterated her government’s claim to the historical mantle of its predecessors:
  
  “On the 9th floor of the Beehive building in Wellington, sitting directly behind my desk, is a picture of Michael Joseph Savage. You could say he’s on my shoulder but also ever so slightly in my ear.
  
  Of course it was Savage and the first Labour Government that lifted New Zealand out of the depths of the Great Depression. Not by cutting taxes and services, but by investing in jobs, and building a social welfare safety net. They built the country’s first state home. And not long after these social reforms – New Zealand’s living standards were among some of the highest in the world. Not for the few, but for the many.
  
  The Finance Minister who supported Savage, Walter Nash, then led Labour’s second government as it continued to build our nation’s social welfare system, while advocating on the world stage for peace over war after World War 2.
  
  It was Norman Kirk and a Labour government who tilted the country towards a modern future with reforms of trade, health, the arts, and education. They worked hard to foster a renewed national identity and partnership with Maōri – all the while challenging global evil such as apartheid and nuclear testing.
  
  It was a fight David Lange continued, making New Zealand nuclear free, while also righting the wrongs of the past by legalising homosexuality, and fully abolishing the death penalty.”
  
  Virtually every claim made by the Prime Minister in the passage quoted above is either historically contestable, or just plain, flat-out, wrong. For that very reason, it is a powerful illustration of the deeply flawed thinking that has led the Ardern Government to the brink of electoral ruin.
  
  At its heart is a cynical contempt for the truth, and a smug conviction that the falsehoods scattered through it will not be noticed by anybody whose opinion matters. Labour’s leaders have been able to get away with this sort of rhetorical flim-flam since 2017 because the intervention of the unpredictable – Christchurch, Covid – helpfully distracted the country from its government’s moral vacuity. The longer the electorate has had to take stock of its government’s ethics, however, the less it has found to like.

  Nigel: If they try to “set” the price of petrol in a volatile and ever changing market, they risk one or more of the oil companies simply withdrawing from our market, which is miniscule by world standards.
  
  And given how Cindy has destroyed the local oil exploration industry, there is no local alternative – as Petrocorp was in the 1980’s – able to possibly fill, or at least partially fill, the gap in supply.
  
  I am not a conspiracy theorist, but could this be a deliberate plan to force us to embrace alternatives?? Are they really so stupid they don’t know we don’t have the electricity to recharge all the electric vehicles we are supposed to be driving by 2030??

Sad to hear of the passing of Sir Roger Bhatnagar. I remember the first Sound Plus store he started up in the Civic building on Queen street.

He worked behind the counter and sold me a 3 in 1 stereo system. As we know he went onto bigger things through hard work and determination.

Don’t hear about success stories like that anymore.

Back in the day, when I was a young whipper snapper, I noticed that Sir Robert Muldoon was widely reviled.

However, this revulsion, in my opinion, did not reach the levels that Cindy has now attained.

Congratulations to Cindy! You are now the most widely hated politician in New Zealand’s history!

A government that is in last place in most things, has finally scaled the ladder to the top in terms of widespread disdain.

      DOC in Te Urewera seems to have come under the spell and mumbo jumbo emanating from Tamati Kruger and Te Uru Taumatua. The destruction of the huts is Kruger’s variety of symbolic ‘ethnic cleansing, (much the same as Majurey’s scorched earth policy in respect of Auckland volcanoes and their exotic trees). The hut burning is pure vandalism; two huts that I visit have gone; one was particularly amazing; attractive, small, friendly and welcoming, sitting in a wonderful setting above the river. It had history; going back to the deer culling days (when I first visited); irreplaceable.
      Incredibly the locals are also shocked; more evidence of how tribes are really run; ‘concensus’ -BS. Decisions are made FOR the people (by self selected elite) not BY the people.

Cindy’s only job outside of working outside politics, in her entire life, was working as a fish and chip wrapper.

How does Cindy have the temerity (through her Team of $55 million lickspittles) to accuse Mr Luxon of inexperience?

Cindy has the least real world experience of any politician I have ever see.

    Over the past week or so, Cindy has sneaked around, pitching the “inexperienced” line to the lickspittles, about Mr Luxon.
    
    Sure enough, the lickspittles parrot it to the public, until it becomes a “thing”.
    
    The problem with her pitch is that it is hypocritical and absurd.
    
    Cindy’s CV was completely empty, except for fish and chip wrapping, before she got the most important job in the country.
    
    Mr Luxon’s CV is incomparably better.
