  Speaking to enthusiastic idiots of the loony left, I’m often told “we’ve tried that (institutions) and it didn’t work”. Apparently people regularly having their heads cut off or smashed in because “Satan told me to do it” or similar, is acceptable collateral damage.

  13 is her birthdate, 13 is also her sister’s birthdate.
  Her Mother died on the 13th (we all reckoned she planned to pass on that date)
  Her association with number 13 is uncanny. Invoice numbers end in 13.

  Hearty congratulations Mike. Mrs LMS and I celebrate 50 years in February 2024. Only seems like yesterday. They were halcyon days in the 70s. Life was so much slower and less complicated. No computers no emails no social media. We wrote letters and memos. I tell the young ones that I had a secretary who I dictated letters and memos to. Connie would dutifully take down my rantings and ravings in short hand and type up the draft and put them in my in tray.
  By the time I got to proof read them I had calmed down and would call her to come in and she would take down a more measured version.
  Today of course you press send and the rantings and ravings are gone. I think in our day the system prevented a lot of harm that happens today.

Congratulations to the Black Ferns to retain the World Cup.

However, Thank God for the TMO, who got 3 out of 3 big cslls right, the on field officials were poor. The ref was inconsistent & applied rules inconsistently. For example
1. Advantage applied only to give England advantage & tries, but not NZ;
2. Diving into rucks England were allowed to, but not NZ who were penalised;
3. Offside – both back lines infringed regularly

Rules I don’t understand & I was surprised to see like the use of the maul with truck & trailer. Such instances were used by both sides to score tries. Several times the ball was “out” of the maul, but the player was able to hold on to the maul or in some cases, rejoin the maul. All instances that was cynically putting the rest of the forward pack off side.

Last night smacked of British tinkering with the rules, so the game suits the style of players and game the British want to play.

    Did anyone else notice major omissions from last night’s game? Namely, any NZ government representative. No Jaspinda, and no Robbo (Minister of Sport), by contrast Luxon was in the crowd and posted on Facebook. So, is it a case we only get behind NZ, when we are certain NZ will win, and the government doesn’t want to be associated with a team that might lose on home soil?

      Anyone else think it was odd that there was no mention of the players’ weights? Commonly referred to and useful in the mens’ game. It would have been interesting to know if the English were actually larger than our girls. Doesn’t seem to be allowed to criticise in any way either. That said, great drama.

      Jaspinda was on AirForce1 on to a photo shoot in Phnom Phen – in Cambodia, called an APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Council) meeting.
      She is the only Woman Present at the meeting so she will love that.

        I’ve played/followed rugby all my life too. I played at high school when mauls became the vogue in the 1970s (prior to that everything was a ruck). Then the 1980s, when first Auckland and then the ABs made the maul a weapon to score tries with from anywhere on the field. I was under the impression that truck & trailer, rejoining/hanging on to the maul and using the maul for deliberate obstruction were meant to have been a ting of the past. However,last night everything that I thought had been banned was there on full displayed, and it provided 4 tries.

  That was an accidental head clash pure and simple. How do you get sent off for that?
  
  England were going to win about 40 nil untill it became 14 on 15.
  
  So with a one player advantage they just snuck home – as is often the way in sport, the best team doesn’t always win.
  
  I will say though that the nz defence at the end was outstanding against the line out drives.
  
  Also, Sam Kane could take some captaincy lessons from Ruawhe (sp?) Damont. A true leader

    Opie, it was a late tackle (albeit committed) that took out Woodman, it was a shoulder charge without arms, and it also had a head clash. Under modern rules, it is an instant red card. Under the same rules, the yellow card was also correct. What was not a correct call was allowing the English wing to return to the field. She showed clearly all the signs of a head knock and by continuing to play, she was only endangering herself.

    How do you get sent off for that? Because that’s the rules, whether the contact is intentional of not. Head to head contact with force starts at red card level, and will only be reduced if there are mitigating factors, of which there were none; both players were upright throughout until Portia Woodman went down unconscious from the contact. It’s highly dangerous play, regardless of whether it’s intentional or accidental.
    
    The onfield and TV officials got that call 100% correct. The English player should have gone lower, and has only herself to blame.

      It may be the rules but it’s ridiculous. They are basically saying you can’t tackle front on, unless the tackler bends over and exposes their head. Attacker leads with the hip, knocks out the tackler and no one is sent off?
      
      That tackle wasn’t late, it can’t be a shoulder charge as it was chest to chest.
      
      The point is this, the game is being dulled to the point where you may as well play touch.
      
      Do the league method where it goes on report unless its a swinging arm. That way the games outcome is not so badly affected.
      
      Rugby has stolen most of leagues rules anyway….
      
      Anyone supporting this has never played the game.

  One big missed call, I think, was in the play resulting in the penalty to England which led to the stolen lineout.
  
  There was helter-skelter activity and I swear an England player stuck her hand out and caused a deliberate knock on, which is usually a yellow card.

  the worst demonstration of ‘tinkering with rules’,was the ‘Rose’ player who wasted time with a bootlace problem while her team mates held an onfield conference; ignoring the instruction from the Ref to PLAY. This is a penalisable offence within the rules, but is never used; northern teams excel at time wasting which detracts from the flow of the game.
  A penalty try to the opposition for such behaviour within the 22 field area, and a free kick to the non offending team in the mid field area – between 22’s-would soon stop this nonsense.

    Make a rule something like: Ref calls play after one minute of stoppage. Injured player, or one with a bootlace problem must leave the field immediately. After calling play – the ref starts silently counting in seconds. For every second, the restart is moved ten metres up the field. If the 10 metres takes play over the goal line – it becomes a try. Watch players scurrying to get on with the game!

    We are not doing worse than China, India, USA and a good number of other countries. What NZ pumps into the atmosphere China would surpass in a day easily.
    
    NZ should not be ruining its economy and lowering the standard of living of its citizens to fulfil a perceived obligation that will make the PM look good.
    
    There is a huge amount of data out there produced by scientists who disagree with AGW but they are not getting any attention. We need an adult conversation about the whole issue with freedom of speech and respect for those who would swim against the tide. We desperately need that discussion.
    
    Sadly, in this woke world, it is not going to happen, and we will all suffer as a result.

      Well we all hope that technology will show us a way forward. But ultimately, the problem here is the constant growth model that modern capitalism requires. It means sustainability and environmental management takes second position (or worse) to increasing profit. Short term profit becomes more important than thinking about how to ensure profit will always endure.
      
      So, for mine, I think we need a major paradigm shift around how we view the capitalist model. Change from such a short term, increase profit for this year compared to last year, to a model where we look at a 20, 30, 100 year profit model. Sure, its not as compelling to shareholders, but ultimately, the wealth will be greater in the long run. And we might just end up with a better society and place to live in for that.

        20% of the world’s methane comes from rice production. How is the world gaining to address that if the world goes vegetarian, and the largest percentage of global population growth is in those countries that grow rice.
        
        The report is a production of Victoria University, the same “academics” who have been writing nZ’s environmental policy for the last 20 years. These people are the “children” of the same Victoria University that gave us the Values party, and policies that are backward and are not in line with policies in Europe.

        Most economists would disagree. GDP is the total value of the domestic production of all goods and services. Note – VALUE, not quantity. Switzerland became rich selling world class services (banking, insurance etc.). Are you suggesting there is a limit to the value of those services? Even in New Zealand, the service sector makes up most of the economy.
        
        The other thing to remember is that environmental degradation is inversely related to wealth. Have you been to India? I have. About 600 million people live day to day – literally. Do you think they care about the environment?

        France has been 70 to 80% nuclear powered for decades.
        
        I’m not totally sold on nuclear due to the current real world waste disposal issues. However, going full nuclear (preferably advanced) would be better than societal collapse due to the foolish reliance on expensive and ineffective “renewables”.

It’s okay for those who only have, say 10-20 years left on this planet, but those who have to come after are going to have a fairly shitty time of it compared to those born in the 1940s and 1950s.     It is because the likes of Germany had shut down their coal-fired power stations (for economic, not environmental, reasons), and wanted to get ‘credit’ for them.

      IIRC the EU negotiated that baseline. It was the year after the fall of the Eastern Bloc in 1989 and the reunification of Germany. Germany shut down much of the dirty industry in the former East Germany. It was then able to bank millions of emissions credits.

      Maybe there is not enough gas but I doubt that is a result of the ban on offshore gas exploration. Those exploration efforts, if successful would have led to gas coming online in the 2030s and 2040s. IIRC we will pretty much run out of supply from current sources by the mid 2030s.
      
      In opposing exploration, Labour and the Greens are assuming that when the supply is exhausted we will simply stop using gas in New Zealand. Why else would they oppose looking for more of the stuff? Far more likely we will be importing LNG from Australia.
      
      As you can see from this chart, Australia is going nuts on gas exports. Exports will exceed $100 billion in the 2022/23 financial year.

Stuff article property developer kitty Merriman complains about the cost of traffic management. She says staff likely earn $ 30 an hour and get charged out at $100 an hour.

“However, wages are not necessarily where the excessive costs come in. Merriman conducted a forensic examination of her supply chain and found that between the traffic management firm, the subcontractor and head contractor, a 100% margin was being added the true cost.”

How can Merriman do a “forensic audit” of her own supply chain, and from that determine her suppliers costs and markup?

Has she got a copy of their accounts? All she’s given is a 30$ reckon on their wage vs $100 charge out but does that include the other employee costs like recruitment and KiwiSaver and the cost of the specialised truck they arrive in, the trucks driver, the time it takes for them to get to her job, petrol, insurance for vehicle & company, acc , rising interest, head office costs? How does she know what their Markup is? What markup is she expecting to make on her own development?

Then she says “She believes this is an industry-wide problem that has come about due to the legal requirement for traffic management.

Most developers are following a legal requirement and don’t know any better, and so they just pay? “

That makes no sense on one hand she says it’s a legal requirement and then she says they are ignorant and don’t know any better than to t pay. What does she know is there a better but still legal way?

Traffic management is very expensive. It should be examined to see if we can find smarter safer ways to do it. But this article contained no facts that would help do that.

  It’s unusual that a simple main contractor, subcontractor chain would add a 100% margin to traffic management. Ms Merriman is being ripped off, if that is the case. Both the head contract and subcontract agreements should state an agreed margin for variations (usually road crossings are a provisional sum because they’re prone to finding services in different places to those shown in the records).
  
  That said, traffic management is very expensive. I’ve shut off lanes of Queen Street before, the council fee itself isn’t too bad. It’s everything else that is insanely expensive. Sometimes Traffic Management companies over-specify the road type to ream the client/keep staff busy (I.e. a quiet cul de sac shouldn’t require the same TMP as a four lane arterial).

  Back in the day, motorway mowers were a bloke who brought a mower to an area, and mowed the berm. Sometimes a moron driving that road didn’t take care and people got injured.
  
  After that signs cautioning of a mower in operation were used, the colour of which is supposed to tell drivers to be extra cautious. Still, people drove into the back of mowers, or the truck.
  
  Things have escalated to the point where the full length of the area being mown is lined by cones, a lane is closed, there is a safety truck with driver, a mower truck with driver, and the whole operation takes three times as long as it used to.

      It’s the legacy of Health and Safety legislation that was brought in after people died. Both Labour and National have contributed to that. Now, if you want to do anything on a road you must have a traffic management plan. I was involved in a lot of motorcycle runs for charity. The rules around that have made it difficult, and run the risk of costing more than the amount of money you can raise.

Why does an engineering business with 6 on the floor and 3 in the office need 10 fire extinguishers of two types? A rag with solvent on it gets a spark from a welder and starts burning. Chuck it on the floor and cover with a sheet of ply or steel. Last thing you want is an idiot with an extinguisher blasting a burning rag all around the workshop.

    I do find it interesting that giving an equal say to Pākeha for Māori is considered apartheid.
    
    I don’t often agree with Martyn Bradbury (I find him a bit of a tosser) but he has a point when he says that our systems of power and control are all white, our dominant culture is white, our benefitting from colonialism is white, our purposeful laws aimed at taking more Māori land were white, our confiscations are white, our dominant narrative is white, and that any attempt to rebalance the damage caused by taking 90% of Māori land in less than a century and any attempt to live up to the promise of the Treaty must be denigrated and appallingly decried as apartheid.
    
    Co-Governance is the EXACT model that National and ACT developed. 3 Waters was an attempt to serve two masters, the Waitangi Tribunal ruling into water ownership triggered by Key selling 49% of the hydro assets and the need to find a way for Local Councils to fund water infrastructure.
    
    I have yet to hear a coherent argument that will address the infrastructal problems we are facing.

      The fact that we have more White Politicians than Maori has little if anything to do with White People. Maori have been free to stand for Electoral Office since forever. White Politicians even made compulsory Maori Seats available to Maori while they could choose between voting for a Maori Representative or voting for anyone for that matter (note, one person, one vote).
      The word apartheid is relatively new to NZ Politics and any bias in its implementation has been initiated by this Govt’s Maori Caucus and must be resisted at all costs.

      Every citizen gets one vote and each vote is of equal weight. If one group, based on race, gets more votes or more “say”, which actually means decision making, then that’s the problem. We can’t have two types of citizenship in the country based on race. That’s apartheid.

Not even the green party believes New Zealand’s efforts will reduce global temperatures, even if we destroy our farming industries. We are told it is all about “doing our bit” as part of the global community.
Surely if it is worth destroying the New Zealand economy to reduce emissions, then we should also “do our bit” by allowing mining for the minerals needed for the green economy.
Doing otherwise would make New Zealand a first rate hypocrite. But I guess as long as we are a “world leading” hypocrite that is OK.

  I have concluded that Green MPs do not understand how the lithium and cobalt required for EV batteries is sourced. Or they choose to be willfully ignorant. When did you see a green MP advocating for an end to child labour in the Congo to extract lithium?
  
  Same with the steel for wind turbines. Do they know that steel is made using a blast furnace and coking coal? And that the West Coast of New Zealand produces high quality coking coal? They seemingly do not have the intellect or the required understanding of science to join the dots.
  
  Another example is the new Wellington mayor who intends to stop Wellington Airport expanding because of climate change. Good luck with that.
  
  If Wellington Airport reaches capacity in 2030, the price of landing slots will rise. Cost of flying to Wellington will increase. International flights from Australia will pivot to Christchurch and Auckland.
  
  Air travel is forecast to DOUBLE by 2040. And there is not a damn thing the Wellington mayor can do about it. All she will achieve is to accelerate the decline of Wellington.

Absolutely loved watching the rugby last night. Just so awesome to see a team at that level showing so much passion and authenticity, it’s impossible not to feel proud to be a kiwi seeing the way they conduct themselves on and off the field. Men’s sport has lost something in the last 15-20 years, it’s become boring and very sanitised. They could learn a lot from the Black Ferns (and other teams in that tournament).

  What I enjoyed most was the wonderful type of rugby the black ferns played. In contrast the English basically had the boring rolling maul as their only source of ‘go forward’ and try scoring. It was so good to see the entertaining brand beat the boorish brand !!

    It was winning rugby, if a little tedious.
    The rules were changed to stop that drudgery and we all grizzled.
    The English women’s team have a winning formula within the rules of the game.
    
    Until it didn’t work.
    If the rules stay the same the other teams better figure out how to counter the white tide.
    The Blackferns pinched the ball from their throw in otherwise they would have lost.

Turbulence in the cyber finance world …

Crypto currency’s reputation takes another smack with news that more than $US370 million of funds are missing from the collapsed American crypto exchange, FTX.

The exchange filed for bankruptcy on Friday, signalling the end of the multi-billion-dollar fortune of its founder, 39-year-old Sam Bankman-Fried, who now faces investigations by American authorities.

The Wall Street Journal reports FTX was using billions of dollars of customer money to fund risky trades by Alameda Research, a digital-currency Bankman-Fried also founded.

About $US371 million in crypto assets seem to have been taken without permission, alleges the “crypto analytic” firm Elliptic. More than $US220 million of tokens were quickly converted to the “stablecoin” dai or to ether, the second-largest crypto currency.

“Stable coin” is crypto currency linked to conventional currency or other conventional assets.

The WSJ suggests that Bankman-Fried’s might have antagonised the “crypto world” by advocating for crypto regulation.

“In particular, he made an enemy of Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, the world’s biggest crypto exchange by trading volume. Zhao, usually known just as CZ, was an early backer of FTX. Last weekend, he tweeted that Binance was dumping more than $US500 million worth of FTT, a token created by FTX.

Something different. Having a drone with forward and under sensors, I was onto this thing for the blind 5 years ago. Thing was, I did not know where or how to make this fly (no pun) Bringing the idea to someone raised possibilities that it would get stolen.
Back to the drone. MavicPro. Somehow people crash them. You have to be an idiot or turn the sensors off. I have flown it over water here and in Hawaii and Alaska. I can even make it follow me.

I am appalled by how much coverage the MSM gives to UFC, all of it positive. It’s essentially cage fighting.

In an era when so much attention is paid to the long term consequences of accidental head contact in rugby, the lack of matching concern paid to a sport where two people are trying to beat the living shit out of each other is staggering.

It’s almost as if the media can’t join the dots.

  So what is he going to do? MAKE US use PT? He can Foxtrot Oscar. I would not use PT where I live if I was paid to do it.
  
  Hopefully in 12 months he will be gone.
  
  Here is an idea James Shaw: “Set a carbon price. Oh that’s right you have. We have had an emissions trading scheme for 15 years. After you have done that just FO out of our lives and let people make their choices.”

    “Make us use PT?” Good question. Free people choose the mode of transport that suits them best. The only way I’d use PT is if there was no other option, and probably not even then. There will be many like me.
    So I would suggest that Shaw _will _ force us. He will do things like make fuel too expensive, make it too difficult to use the mode of transport we prefer (I.e. ICE cars). He will have to make it illegal to purchase/drive/sell/park ICE cars. Maybe some kind of horrendous road tax. Freedom of choice will have to be limited. If EVs were what we wanted we’d be buying them now. If we wanted to ride the bus we’d be doing it now.
    He’s a big govt guy, not a freedom of choice guy. He will interfere in the market.
    And remember, this is only the beginning. He’s picking the low-hanging fruit. The real pain comes _after_ he’s taken our transportation options away.
    Don’t forget – National are ‘fully on baord’ with this suicide mission. How will they convince me that I prefer to ride on a bus, or convince my wife that she wants to cycle to work in the rain?

    Shaw is living in la la land. PT as it was pre Covid and is not coming back anytime soon, either in NZ or in any major city in the world.
    
    With out understanding what was happening in front of them, namely, during the lockdowns the world turned on the internet to work from home, and people are not going back to the office in a hurry. Meaning cities like Auckland which operates operates 60mill passenger km with its bus services & carried less than 40 mill bus passengers in 2021-22, is carry less 1 passenger per bus service km.
    
    Yet in May, the previous council signed up to Goofy’s/AT’s/Transport Blogs Congestion Free Network programme renamed Climate Action Targeted Rate (or Transport Emission Reduction Plan = TERP). This added $55 per year to everybody’s rates bill. But why?
    
    What are the extra services we want, and to go where?

So folk in Scotland are demanding more action on climate change. Close to 100 percent of these folk are living in houses heated for the next 5 months with natural gas.

They are like the school kids here. No ideas about WHAT should be done and no understanding about what it means for them. No natural gas means and end to modern civilisation in most of Europe. the UK switched from coal to gas. What do they advocate? Going back to burning trees?

The UK cannot switch to heating every home with electric heating powered by renewables. If it could, the market would deliver that outcome.

These protestors should be careful what they wish for. It could be a very chilly experience.
