It will take more than a decade to recieve Government Funding but trout mouth and Transport Minister Micheal Woods in this Labour Government is making more promises he can’t keep over calling for Aucklanders to give feedback on Waitemana Harbour Crossing. This is more hot air being blown by the Government that the polls have turned against over the last few months and even though they spent millions on saying they would make the Auckland Harbour Bridge alterations a priority last year they pulled the plug costing taxpayers millions because of Micheal Woods arrogance.

This project is needed for Auckland whether it is extentions to the Harbour Bridge a New Bridge for Waitemana or a Tunnel , but this talk at this time with a General Election in 2023 only just over Twelve Months away is more of a bribe to try and get voters to return to the Labour Party and is just hot air from a Minister out of his depth and known for promises he can’t keep.

    I fear unless the Maori Elite are silenced by the will of the people co-governance will become a political football like National Super was until we had Kiwisaver.
    ACT must demand a referendum as a bottom line. Te Reo doesnt want one because he knows the outcome will be a resounding NO.

      The referendum is a good call lastman.
      
      The one good thing about it is that if Winston Peters is `hanging around’ after the election he too will be demanding a referendum.
      
      In fact even if he doesn’t hit the 5% his whole campaign will be based around referenda on various matters.

      And co-governance is about Agenda 21/30.
      
      The united nations rights for indigenous people.
      
      Of course their should be fairness for indigenous people and there have been past wrongs.
      
      But the UN is pushing indigenous as a key part of the changes for the new reset. I think it’s to get land management into the hands of the NGO’s and out of public electable accountability. Similar to 3 waters. The indigenous claims are a useful tool to do that. Then they put them in co-governance so if they push through radical or unpopular moves they can’t be voted out or accountable to lgoima or the like.
      
      Also it’s not just indigenous. Look at the claims by Waiheke to make their public land into a UN Biosphere managed by a council funded community group. It’s a similar thing. It means that you can’t vote them out.
      
      Waitakere the same. Closed due to a rahui even though it’s not co-governed or in partnership or part of the iwis settlement. But a british expat political assistant has made a parliamentary submission. She has set up an ngo charity and want funding and state powers to control the park and enter private land for biosecurity reasons and funding a science lab, etc. etc That is not driven by iwi but they will get a place at the table.

      There is a very good chance that no net extra car lanes for private cars. My pick is the extra capacity will be for bikes, busses, trains and walkers. Though probably some of these will go on the current bridge and those car lanes shifted to the new crossing. We have 7 general vehicle lanes now, I’ll be surprised if the Labour/Green/AT proposal is for more than 8. But maybe Wayne Brown gets a say.

  There has in the past been plan after plan and proposal put up.
  
  Which one is this Government going to use or are they going to come up with yet another costly plan, or is this just another attempt to divert peoples minds away from the 3 Waters Scam and the claiming of many of your Councils Parks and Reserves under the amended Water Services Entities Bill (3 Waters) which I am sure most Ratepayers and Councils are not yet aware of.

The need has not gone away, an the options have barely changed except they have got more and more expensive. Three Waters: National’s policy to be revealed closer to election
“At the end of the day, there’s still a lot of dialogue happening – we’ve got two more bills coming to the House in regard to this. This conversation is not over,” [North Shore MP Simon Watts told Q+A] [1]
And –
He said National had been clear about its priorities to repeal Labour’s Three Waters legislation, remove co-governance provisions, and maintain local ownership of water assets.

But –
Watts said National continued to support new regulator Taumata Arowai, alongside mechanisms that would give councils more options to fund necessary improvements to its water

What is not explained –
is whether National will retain the Maori Advisory Council which controls ‘new’ regulator Taumata Arowai – ‘new’, but actually up and running for one year now, first anniversary tomorrow – with that Maori Advisory Council able to issue Te Mana o te Wai statements, the mystery device available to only Māori.

Will National revoke the Maori Advisory Council which controls (by actual “governance”) the ‘new’ regulator Taumata Arowa and Te Mana o te Wai statements? – or just those lower-down the system “co-governance” parts which the public have complained of?

And this needs to be stated quite some time before the Election –
so Labour has to defend their position on this controversial matter and its divisive path – pre-Election – allowing Labour’s support of Te Mana o te Wai statements to be seen as Ardern / Mahuta / Jackson and Morgan’s direct responsibility.

  If they want to fight this, then they should start doing so vigourously, now!
  
  I think it is time to face facts: we have two main parties in NZ Labour-heavy (red) and Labour-light(blue). The distinction is not that large and the conflict between the two is as fake as professional wrestling.

      National promise mass immigration from the third world. This will displace many more in the bottom quarter of the existing population. National are for fake co-governance as a cope for their immigration policies.
      
      Also there is an element within National who want to be seen as “fair” by the left. Many National crave even slight praise from the left. Nothing would make Luxon happier if Willie Jackson said to him “you were hard, but you did the right thing in the end” Luxon would just burst with happiness.

        Don’t select people on where they come from but on their own personal capabilities.
        
        Immigration from the third world is not a problem per se, so long as we are selective about whom we accept.
        
        Sub-Saharan Africa has an average IQ of less than 70, but there are still tens of thousands with an IQ of 120+ that I’d welcome with open arms.
        
        Similarly India has an average IQ in the 80s, but there are perhaps a million or so with 120+ IQs.

A couple of American influences –

The USA Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade
This is taken to all be about Abortion Rights, but that emphasis misses the point that such a right as abortion is not actually in the Founding Document.

So, the cancelling of the “Constitution Right of Abortion” allows related attacks here on Christopher Luxon’s beliefs and possible intentions, although he rightly points out “I have been consistent since becoming leader that these laws will not be re-litigated or revisited under a future National government, and these health services will remain fully funded”, which should be assurance enough unless you want to call this Christian man an absolute fucking liar?
But the actual “return to basics” with the Constitution could well be extended here in New Zealand, to review what is actually in the Treaty of Waitangi,1840, and what has been “invented” since the signing.

American Franklin Graham – the son of Billy Graham, an Evangelical preacher who came to New Zealand in the 50s and 60s to preach the word of God to huge crowds of people – has followed in his father’s footsteps and is here on his God Loves You tour.
The 70-year-old preacher has been criticised for his opinions on things like Islam, abortion and homosexuality.
After 9/11 Graham said Islam was “wicked and evil” and in 2010 he said true Islam could not be practiced in the United States because “you cannot beat your wife or murder your children” – [because] “of multiple marriages, honour killings and those kinds of things that happen in some countries”. [1]
So Franklin Graham views were attacked, by believers in the same Bible source, before he even got here.

And then there is Brian Tamaki’s views his-self: homosexuals cause earthquakes, backing of convoys and Parliamentary protests, up to a point.

But while abortion and the larger issue of religion seems separate from State in most minds, religion now quite seriously impacts Government – it would appear the State now crosses the line, between Treaty of Waitangi (issues in the Treaty and those “considerations” which have “attached” to it since the signing) and matters that move into te Ao o Māori, the Māori world-view and Māori spirituality.

Perhaps read just enough of Ināia tonu nei: a low emissions future for Aotearoa by the Climate Commission [3] to see where Te Ao Māori overlaps “science”, or look at Taumata Arowai, the Water Regulator website [4] which also crosses the line –
so delivering Te Ao o Maori religious influence of the state by stealth?

Good to see the Banking Ombudsman looking into the bank refusal to reimburse fraudulent withdrawals from an Invercargill man’s account. If the finding is against the bank that will send ripples through the banking industry (adding to the recent ripples from the Prime Minister).

The bank is relying on its assessment that the account holder did not take reasonable steps to protect the account. One factor in the assessment was that the unauthorised access was achieved at first attempt. Surely unlikely …

  So most likely the scammed person handed over their authentication credentials to an unauthorised person.
  
  Banks can implement all sorts of security but it counts for nothing if the punters undo their work.

    The bank will have to provide evidence to support its decision.
    
    The wider issue is that almost everyone has at least one bank account these days but not all account holders are aware of what ‘reasonable steps’ means. Not just older folk either – we hear a whole lot these days about functional illiteracy for example. (And scams.)
    
    IIRC a few years back a bank preemptively closed a lot of smaller accounts. Don’t recall the details. Increase bank risk, for example by loosening criteria, and could be more accounts closed.

      Of course that would be RACIST!
      
      I think this bank issue here is just another example of people feeling they should have a consequence-free life:
      * Too lazy to go to school? Go on the dole or bludge on WFF.
      * Too lazy to use a condom? Get an abortion.
      * Too lazy to budget? Don’t worry, WINZ will top you up to get your car serviced etc.
      * Too slack to manage your passwords? No worries, the bank will refund you.

        Is this so if so how do these “people” get money – even if they are for example, overstayers.

        @Paulus. There are ways to receive a benefit without a bank account. We rented to someone who had been homeless. Benefit went into / rent paid out of an account owned and managed by the City Mission.

      Back in my banking days (and they are more than a few years ago) banks only arbitrarily closed accounts for two reasons:
      1. persistent unsatisfactory conduct – cheque for any credit funds was sent to the last address held for the account holder while overdrawn balances were written off.
      2. accounts inoperative for 7 years. In these cases balance was sent to `unclaimed moneys fund’ at I think the Reserve Bank.

  The situation calls for an independent adjudication.

  There is a high chance he has severe mental illness.
  
  My close associate who is a state housing tenancy manager, was attacked two weeks ago. It was a regular inspection of a tenant. The attacker was the adult son of the tenant. He has an extensive criminal record.
  
  She managed to escape. It was a very close call. She is physically unharmed, but has been traumatised.
  
  The guy was arrested and is facing several charges, including threatening to kill.

Three Waters under urgency?

Parliament’s select committee considering the Three Waters legislation has concluded after receiving one of the highest volume of submissions of any select committee process ever.

The final report on Friday involved 88,383 written submissions on what is one of the most contentious bills in recent times.

Twists and turns in the select committee process have attempted to navigate co-governance, ownership and alternative models in a reform that has faced significant public resistance.

The final recommendations are likely to include a modified governance model and expanding Te Ao Māori concepts of Te Mana o te Wai beyond freshwater to also include coastal and geothermal water. Mana whenua may also be able to introduce a Te Mana o te Wai statement and the new Water Service Entities will be required to give effect to these statements.

Whangārei District Council has strongly resisted the Three Waters reforms, including a legal challenge in June this year in collaboration with Timaru and Waimakariri councils that tested the legal rights and interests that Three Waters entails.

In my general discussions following the final report on Friday it seems to me that the new council may still be unconvinced around the benefits of the reforms to local ratepayers and we shall wait to see what position and actions if any are initiated.

National’s Local Government spokesperson on the select committee, MP Simon Watts, expressed concerns during the committee stage that no consideration was made around a well-supported alternative model.

“Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta gave assurances that they would consider the alternative Three Waters model proposed by the Auckland, Christchurch and Waimakariri mayors. I lodged a motion in select committee last week to extend our deliberations in order to properly consider the mayors’ proposal, but Labour MPs used their majority to block the motion – ensuring the Bill would be sent back to the House without adequately considering the new proposal.”

Further developments last week may add fuel to this fire. On the last sitting day we were made aware that Parliament will sit under urgency until midnight for most of the coming week and into the weekend.

I do not think it will be well-received by the New Zealand public if the contentious Three Waters legislation is rammed through Parliament under urgency.

My position on Three Waters is very clear and has been displayed on the Vine Street digital billboard for many months now. If we are in a position to do so, we will repeal Three Waters and work with communities to develop solutions that work for them instead of top-down.

I back our local council and I back our local communities.

As Yvette notes above, National is still working on its alternative to Three Waters, having promised to repeal and replace the legislation. One thing is for sure though; Christopher Luxon has clearly stated that National opposes co-governance of public services, so the governance structure will differ significantly from the cosmetic changes Labour has made to the Water Entities Bill.

Labour also needs to explain why it completely ignored most of the 88,000-plus submissions on the Water Entities Bill, which overwhelmingly opposed the Bill. Labour’s contempt for democracy is going to come back to bite them on the bum, and with good cause!

  The explanation is in their original action. They’ve got majority power, they don’t give a shit about opposition, and they know National will not unwind this despite all their hot air pre-election.

  They’ve dropped in the polls and are likely to lose the next election, but both are as much due to the cost-of-living crisis and other problems as their dismissive contempt of their opposition in this case.   Nobody is going to read a 446-word opinion piece – least of all the sort of uninformed people that really need to read it.
  
  40% of NZ adults are functionally illiterate. They can maybe handle a 140 character text message, but a 446-word missive is way past anything they will attempt to read.
  
  Dr Reti: you have valuable thoughts to convey to a wide spectrum of people. Get some help in how to edit what you write so that the people who need to read it actually can.
  
  This is something Cindy understands: keep it really basic. Don’t overestimate the audience’s ability. The audience will not put in effort to read/understand.

  I have known Shelley Burne-Field (who is Cook Island/Pakeha descent) for most of her life. I knew her late father since 1961 until he died about 5 years ago and her late mother from the early 1980’s until she died about 15/20 years ago.
  
  Shelley is a good person from a good family but, what I do wonder is how she managed to get her submission heard ahead of 88,000 plus other submitters – myself and Homepaddock included.

LGNZ send a guide to these standing orders, along with a template to use, to councils at the start of each term and they have made significant changes to this year’s guide from the last version in 2019, without announcement, fanfare, or scrutiny from the media.

These guidelines assert a new special status in decision making for Maori and iwi that will limit the democratic authority of those who were elected by the voters at large (which included Maori).

Tell your Mayor (and the Chair of your regional council, if you have one) to reject these radical and undemocratic changes at defenddemocracy.nz.

The new Health NZ has decided not to proceed with hospital updates in Otago and Southland previously planned by the District Health Boards.
This is what happens when a government agency is centralised and run out of Wellington. There is no longer any local voice or advocacy. ALL decisions are made on political grounds. I note Southland has a lot of farmers and conspicuously few Maoris.

The same thing happened to roading decisions. Upon taking power, Labour immediately cancelled all major road upgrades in National electorates, taking particular joy in cancelling those in Judith Collin’s area.

The same naked political decisions will be made when allocating water funding.
— Auckland voted in Wayne Brown — no water from the Waikato for you.
— A growing town needs improved sanitation? If it is in a farming area with few Labour voters, it isn’t going to happen.

The Health NZ decisions are sign of the Three Waters disaster to come.

Subject: National policy on Co-Governance/Maorification

Hello Erica, I live in Lower Hutt, far from your electorate but the quotes from you on Q & A in June (see below) have made me doubt my allegiance to the National Party.
There are things voters need to know before next year’s election. If these comments represent National Party policy I will have to switch my party vote to a minor party taking an active stand against what I believe is a government-led transfer of undemocratic power to iwi elite.
I also need a party committed to unwinding the terrible Maorification of our health, education and water systems, and the crazy insertion of Maori language in broadcasting and government correspondence. The very name of our country is threatened without public consultation. I respect other languages, but please don’t mess with mine as Labour have been doing.

OBJECTIONS: I was horrified to read your comment that Maori are our “treaty partners.” There is no mention of partnership in any version of the treaty I have seen and “treaty partnership” is a phrase most often heard from grasping Maori radicals seeking some new advantage.
Of course everyone is welcome to their opinion of co-governance and Maorification but my vote goes to a party committed to leading us away from this dangerous nonsense. One-person one vote is already being trashed by unvoted Maori representration on councils and there are calls for more uindemocratic moves in this direction.

      It doesn’t go near Maorification. In fact its Old Guard of former MPs, like Finlayson and perhaps Mapp, seem to be pulling the party’s puppet strings and keeping National near Labour on the issue.

    I guess that would be better than nothing. However defending yourself against someone on crystal meth with a knife is unlikely to be straightforward.

2 reports todays on families and court cases in states of limbo because of delayed coroners cases.

Why doesn’t the coroner just release her opinion before the investigation where the coroner has said, “Based on the information available to date, it does not appear that the death in question is linked to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine,” she said. “However, this issue will be investigated carefully by the coroner and pertinent information will be requested from various agencies..”

“”It could be a number of months before the final post mortem report is received and all information relating to this death is obtained from relevant agencies”

So they were able to offer assurances to the public that it was unlikely the vaccine before they had a post mortem or investigation.

I just googled and see that there was a third vaccine death linked to the vaccine as confirmed by the govt last april. There are no details of the name, or the persons suburb or school so it’s hard to know if it’s the same teen that the Coroner had said was not the vaccine? Did she get it wrong?Why weren’t the public told the details of the second case so we know if it’s the same person? Also How many shots? Any correlating medicines? Why ?
The reason we have coroners reports is so we can learn from the deaths and prevent future harm.
The safety of others depends on public information of deaths in a timely manner. When will the govt be addressing the speed of coroners reports.

So the government via Waka Kotahi has finally admitted that they have so completely mismanaged the safety of our reading network by not maintaining them or improving them to the point that vehicles can no longer drive at what could be called reasonable speeds anymore. The problem is no longer poor drivers or intoxicated drivers it’s unsafe roads. Watch Police being deployed off other duties to the roads to enforce these new limits. Imagine if these people had been some of the first into New Zealand, we would still be on foot or in bullock carts. I sometimes think that is their eventual goal.

  You can be driving along and all of a sudden the on-coming car will lurch into your lane or head for the ditch… dodging a pothole.
  Quite disconcerting and dangerous.

Does anyone know why my home ISP provider may have blocked kiwiblog , if I am hooked up to wifi it won’t load on my phone but turn wifi off and it loads instantly through mobile provider. Or is this kiwi blog not allowing android to view through a non mobile phone network.

So Labour have made the decision to cut the speed limit on a quarter of our roads but forgets that well built roads are safer than badly serviced old roads that they neglect. You can’t blame the people for roads that are poorly maintained and this Government’s been content with just patching old potholes instead of fixing them.
Sure there is bad drivers on the road but it’s the Government’s job to stop them and take them off our roads not to penslize those that obey the rules why should 75% of our vehicles drivers get penalized for the few that break the law.
