  This is never going to happen! If there ever is any “public consultation” it won’t be this year. There are 5 weeks to Christmas, then it’s the Christmas – New Year break and the firs weeks of the year, when nothing happens in NZ except BBQs.

    I bet it happens. Discussion Document released 23 December 2022. Consultation closes 3 February 2023. Legislation introduced 27 February 2023.
    
    They have an absolute majority. They can do what they want.
    
    Look at it from their position. The opposition and screaming will be overwhelming. The longer and more genuine the ‘consultation’ the worse it will be for them. If people scream all of January they will be screaming into a void.

      I agree that “This is never going to happen!”.
      I believe that with 3 Waters “Te Mana o te Wai” statements and the placement of the Maori Advisory Council in preside over Water Regulator Taumata Arowai and that body to in turn preside over the Four Regional Entities, the matter of “co-governance” has in fact now extended to simple “total governance”.
      And that in itself is becoming “tribal”.
      
      So, my mentioning this is not about any discussion Ardern may initiate as she promised, but the responsibilities the Office of the New Zealand Race Relations Commissioner, the Media, or the Parliamentary Opposition has to prevent a possible vast division in New Zealand society.
      I guess the Referendum some call for, will in fact be next year’s Election itself.

    Or they run consultation over the Christmas period where it gets no coverage yet they can say ‘we consulted extensively’.
    
    In the same vein we wait for the traditional last Friday before Christmas for them to announce any bad news. Potentially they announce the bad news and the consolation at the same time so that the media can choose what it covers and the rest is forgotten.

As one who had to go through all the hoops and hurdles to gain an International Vaccine certificate to keep supply chains running, I find this interesting.

  Those “experts” should be on trial. They need to be compelled to provide evidence to support their moronic assertions, not “models”, evidence. Real, scientific evidence. If they can’t do so, they should be ordered to stfu or risk going to jail for a lengthy spell for lying and causing great harm to society.

      MM – exactly. We have an massive oversupply of “experts”, chair polishers, consultants and countless other parasites who have created meaningless fiefdoms that provide zero benefit to society. They are a financial burden and they make everything worse and more difficult. I have complete contempt for the vast majority of these clowns.
      Yes, of course we need some administration, but wasn’t it Auckland Council that increased by some ludicrous amount of staff over the last 5 years? Massive increase in cost which gave us more complexity, more cost and worse outcomes. The system is broken. It needs dismantled and rebuilt.

    Models are OK, so long as they are built on a factual foundation and the problems with them are well publicised.
    
    The biggest issue with models is that they are not all the same quality.
    
    Some have a very solid footing. For example, the laws of physics are just models. So are tide table predicitions. We can predict the tide precisely a hundred years from now.
    
    Others are pretty poor and are more a reflection of the modellers activism/wishes than anything else. Spreadding of a new virus in a population is an example.
    
    Remember all the bullshit about R number?

        A model is only half-arsed if it does not come with an explanation of the theories used, the limitations etc.
        
        IMHO, most of the stuff I have seen from Hendy was just a download of code from Ferguson, with a few tweaks of parameters for NZ conditions.
        
        Unless there is something huge that I have missed, there is nothing to justify the millions sloshed their way. It almost looks like a Mahuta job.

    It is for rentals, you can still drink water in your own house I believe.
    If your rental has a rain water tank you must treat it with UV or Cl, if you have a power cut untreated water must be prevented from reaching the house.
    Drinking and bathing can resume when the power is restored, if that takes 4 weeks, what is that to a government bureaucrat?

    My neighbour has a spring on his property which we have the right to use this water. Both domestic and stock but we don’t use for domestic.
    
    He is worried that he will have to go through the process and Cost of having to regular send water for testing and then treatment.

    As a kid living on farms for the first 17 years of my life in the 50’s and 60’s. We were solely reliant on water tanks which were cleaned out about once a year.
    
    You should have seen what came out:
    Dead Opossums
    Dead rats
    Dead birds
    Various fungi, leaves etc
    
    No one ever got seriously sick that I recall.

    Decades back an active high country tramper told me about a popular hut that had notably nicer tank water – often remarked upon, and after some years during maintenance they discovered the remains of a possum in it.
    
    We evolved drinking really dirty water. Roof collected rainwater is generally high quality, with only a little well-diluted bird-shit contaminating it.

  Yes, rainwater off the roof that is intended for human consumption through the taps needs to be treated. More commonly through UV filter system by the pump.
  All sorts of contaminants in the house tanks can be gather over time but it mostly settles at the bottom.
  But this in no way should be heavily regulated by the govt which really is a sneaky way to get another tax grab. The system works perfectly fine by each property managing their own as we do. And our system is a constant maintenance and management that costs. last thing I need is the govt putting its sticky fingers in asking for more money on a system that they don’t touch in any way.

      Yep Capt and as a kid we used to drink direct fom the creeks on the farm and the stream on the boundary.
      
      The rule of thumb was that the water cleared itself every chain – or 22 yards for those that do not know the length of a chain measurement. Again no serious sickness.

  Roof water typically has very high fecal coliform count and yes it needs to be treated or at least filtered.

  The fact that Labour, the Greens, MSM along with the usual puppet academics, have gone septic on Nationals Youth Crime proposal would suggest National are onto a winner.
  The staggering increase in youth, and other crime, under Labours watch is indisputable and the fact National has come out with a policy has caught the government off guard, so hence the vitriol that is coming out.
  All National have to do when challenged is ask, what have Labour done other than allow an unprecedented increase in crime levels, and say after 5 years of Labour sitting on their hands, National are here to fix it up.

  I am one of few people commenting here that has actually been through “boot camp”, albeit in a different army and a almost 40 years ago.
  
  I don’t think it is as straightforward as either side makes out.
  
  Yes, boot camps can really help straighten out directionless youth:
  * They are taken away from their broken situations.
  * They have to meet standards and face consequences. These will be novel for many of them.
  * They will work as a team with a diverse set of other people to overcome adversities.
  * They will achieve things to be proud of and real self respect.
  
  But there is another side to this too.
  
  For this to work, you can’t just herd together a platoon of losers and expect them to function. The problem people need to be fitted in with high quality individuals too (in the case of NZ that would be with normal recruits) and that ratio would need to be high enough that the losers don’t pull the entire platoon down to their level.
  
  I think that ratio would probably need to be at least 80% quality individuals mixed with a maximum of 20% losers.
  
  When I was in basic training there were good platoons, ok platoons and real basket-case platoons. This mainly depends on the quality of the people being selected. A platoon with a few losers could function because the others soon straighten them out. But the worst nightmare is to be a reasonable individual in a platoon with 50% or more losers.
  
  The other factor here is that this is just really another way of trying to hide the problem in a state institution. When they are under 18, hide them in the education system (where they disrupt classes or wag). When they are over 18 hide them in the Army.
  
  Is our Army perhaps already too stressed to cope with this?

    The question is, is this a job for the military?
    
    My answer is no. And I say this as an ex serviceman.
    
    That being said, I do not believe that this idea is without merit, and I also believe that ex servicemen would be great in certain aspects of the role, and in the task of developing young people who have fallen off the rails.
    
    But we have to recognise that these are young people with complex needs, who will not be there of their own volition, and will not have been screened via a selection process and have not expressed a desire to serve.
    
    For this to work, a military structure must be supported by a high staff to resident ratio, as well as QUALIFIED teachers, therapists, medical specialists.
    
    Think of it as a youth REHAB facility, where, instead of a 28 day programme, we have a 12 month youth retrieval programme, where young people are reminded of their positive potential, and the change they can make in their own lives.
    
    It’s going to be tough, but nothing worthwhile comes easy.
    
    This can work, but it must be seen as part of a wider approach to these issues, and requires community engagement, and investment in things that will break the cycle.

      BS. This is exactly the woke crap that has got us into this situation.
      
      What these troubled kids need is to learn that no body owes them anything and life is hard, and often not fair in the moment. They need a hard drill Sargent who won’t take any of their crap, will make them run their asses off and do mundane task to perfection, sending them to bed each night exhausted and getting them up before dawn to start again. Under a good NCO, it takes 3 to 6 months and a ragtag bunch can become a disciplined cohesive group.
      In amongst all the physical training there needs to be schooling of some sort. The 3 Rs for those who need it, more advanced skills for others.

        These little scrotes already know life is hard. But what they’ve never learned is boundaries, and a Good NCO will give them that.
        
        When I did Basic Training, we has a ratio of One Sergent level NCO to 20 Recruits. The approach from National will need a much better ratio. Possibly 1 to 8.
        
        There will need to be FULL TIME support for these offenders, and pre set, measurable outcomes. It’s not enough to just lock them up.
        
        It’s not woke crap. These little scrotes have been screwed over by life, but ultimately made their own choices. Any young offender who ends up in these facilities would have had their chance to sort stuff out, but if we don’t tackle the causes, we will continue to set up young people for failure.
        
        So, What do we need to address?
        
        Make them go to school, and fine the Parents if they do not.
        
        We need to stop paying young women to breed. One unwanted Pregnancy is a mistake. 2 I can forgive. Three or more is a lifestyle choice, and we need to stop paying for it. They are breeding criminals.
        
        We need top start valuing fatherhood, and that includes docking the pay of young men who think that they can just walk away from a situation that they have got themselves into.
        
        and yes, start monitoring young offenders electronically.
        
        It’s not woke shit, it’s hard yakka but it needs to come with an outcome in mind.

        Won’t do anything? It’s amazing how peer pressure and an empty stomach can motivate people to cooperate.
        There’s a lot of psychology in military group training. One basic one is: Punish the whole group for the poor performance of the individual. While it sounds harsh, over time the group learns that if they work together things get easier.
        Your mate won’t run, fine, you can run for him, and while you are at it carry him. He won’t run, fine, he won’t eat, but nobody else eats either. I was in a situation where 10 platoons (300 new entrants) had to run while the rest of the camp were lining up for chow, all because of the poor behaviour of a small group in one of the platoons. It never happened again.
        I spent over 9 months in two different bases seeing what happened to my own intake (twice because I changed units after 3 weeks and my new unit was seen as an all new intake) and the intake after me. In each case, within a week the worst trouble causes had realised they needed to start working with the others if they wanted to get through their service. Interestingly there was no beating people up behind the barracks.
        This was repeated every 6 months at multiple bases for multiple years with many thousands of youngsters. It wasn’t without reason that this was the best army on the continent.

      If these Boot Camps are to be the equivalent of what used to be NZs Military Prison (Ardmore), albeit, with civilians in charge with no changes made to historic ‘routines, employment, punishments, and accommodation facilities, etc, I have no problem with them.
      However, I fear everyday busybodies who infest NZs Society won’t let this happen. It should be noted with concern that when Military Personnel were sentenced to a term at Ardmore, the bleeding heart busybodies were nowhere to be seen/heard.
      No, I haven’t been an inmate at Ardmore, but I have escorted a few inmates to their appointed temporary abode.
      Perhaps other ex-Military Personnel on this blog could outline a typical 24 hour daily routine for Ardmore Inmates.

        Actually, the answer to 80% of this problem was in effect & working well, until Labour CANCELLED CHARTER SCHOOLS.
        These were working extremely well, particularly for Maori youth. Charter Schools need to be re-introduced as a matter of urgency, and set up in a way that Labour cannot cancel them again – ever.

        Ardmore was a short sharp shock to remind Military Personnel of, and return them to, the level of discipline and conduct required. The critical point is that these servicemen have already been exposed to this.
        
        Young Offenders have not been.
        
        You put these young offenders in Ardmore, the Day One routine will be a disaster. They have not been taught sew, clean, polish shoes, and will have no idea how to get a cell ready for inspection by 7 am having arrived at 5 pm the night before.
        
        the equivalent of a 2 week stint in Ardmore will not fix 14 to 17 years of parental neglect and poor education.
        
        12 Months of guidance with standard military discipline, with boundaries, expectations, education and earned privileges (which can be rescinded at any time) just might.

      “complex needs” = need for structure and something to take pride in, and in the short term that equates to a boot up the arse and a hierarchy and peers (eg a social context) that expect a lot more of them than what they are used to. But I agree that isn’t something that can be achieved in a month. The military clearly has very well developed systems for breaking people down and building them back up into more disciplined and effective individuals – the debasing harshness is an effective reset tool in that process.

      C’mon, all basic training (aka boot camps) since WW2 have had medical staff.
      
      Teachers and therapists? They have two or three chevrons and are called Corporal or Sarge!
      
      These kids have partially got into their current position because of too much pussy-footing and not enough consequences.
      
      The one point I would agree with you on is that you can do a lot of damage to the quality candidates by putting too many of the losers in with them and this really should not be yet another job foisted on a strained military. More than 2 losers per section and you’re starting to invite problems.
      
      I did basics in three different platoons in 2 different units. The first was a complete shit show of losers (at least 5 were completely stoned when they showed up at the gates on their first day). Luckily the platoon Lt from a different platoon came “shopping” for replacements for his platoon and I got a transfer to a quality platoon (about 1/3 were grads, 1/6 were NCEA-1 equivalent school drop outs and the rest were normal school leavers). We got on well and the two or three shirkers soon learned that life was far better if they actually tried to do things well. I did the vast bulk of my basics with them and it was hard, but, in some ways, enjoyable. For the last fortnight or so of basics I transferred to a different unit – mainly losers destined to become stores clerks. Muppets the most of them, and I and the 3 others who had transferred in with me were the semi-leaders of the platoon while we were there. We were requested to stay on as instructors but pushed off as soon as we could to professional functions at Army HQ.
      
      The reason I raise that is to show how damaging these people can be to the way a platoon gels. If they can’t gel and can’t work together it is really hard for the people in that platoon to develop into anything useful (as a team or as individuals in the Army).

    The fact is these youngsters heading for “boot camp” have committed crimes… they are really in the hands of the Justice system.
    They need to be under the authority of the Corrections Department.
    
    Perhaps trained folk from the Defence Department can deliver a programme for the young offenders, but what needs to be understood is that the youngsters are not in the programme by choice.
    
    The critics of the boot Camps need to explain why they want these youngsters to remain in an environment where they commit violent crimes.

      Maggy, very few of us in the South African Army were there by choice either. Most, myself included, were conscripts.
      
      While in the Army (NZ Army includes) you are not a civilian free to walk out, take a sickie or backchat. The Army owns you. If you don’t show up where you’re supposed to be, you’re on AWOL. That generally carries consequences – meted out on the spot.
      
      It’s pretty much like low security prison except the MPs actually do their job and follow up on defaulters (as opposed to Corrections who don’t seem to give a damn if someone hacks off their tracker).

    They will not be receiving army training so can’t fit in with recruits to the military. No weapon or tactics training for example. Having been the CO of my units combat training Squadron I know it will be hard work, we lost about 50% during training and that was volunteers.
    There is a need for discipline and that can work . The most effective discipline comes from the trainees themselves. If someone is late on parade by half an hour the all miss breakfast. It won’t happen again.
    Group discipline works well and it’s not always harsh sometimes the group help weak individuals over their struggles and that teaches good life lessons. If I was 25 years younger I would be talking to Mr Luxon and putting my hand up for the job.

    cmm, like you I did my time in the army (2 years), and while to some people it sounds crazy I think compulsory national service for 9 months is an excellent developer of character. Those that have it will get better, those that don’t get sorted out most of the time. The benefit of compulsory is you get a cross section of society which tends to improve the distribution of rotten apples problem you describe.
    Your 9 months is either immediately after school or can be deferred to after a degree. Conscientious objectors can become pen pushers, cooks, mechanics or do their 9 months in some non-military organization (prison guard 🙂 ).
    In my time I saw a lot of troubled guys lives get turned around, and those who never got it together were typically those who never would. Many of them ended up dead later (typically not while in the army) because of their lack of ability to adjust.
    For about 8 years here in New Zealand I was involved with the Cadet Forces, in particular the Sea Cadets. It’s interesting to note that the percentage of Cadets who ended up with criminal records later in life is way below the national average. And we often had troubled youngsters join us, but the discipline and lessons learned while still teenagers, often being lead by other teenagers set them on the right path.

      My Father was CO of a Sea Cadet Unit in the UK. In 13 years he had ONE cadet before the court and they had over 100 cadets in the unit. They were in the Unit for 5 years approx so over 200 passed through in that time.

      For it too work they need to build comraderie and team work.
      FWIW I left school at 16 ( As soon as Shakespeare was part of the Sylabis).
      And worked in an Adult enviroment as a Fisherman. Best thing for me was too leave school in all honesty.
      The “Void” needs to be filled if not attending school and too be honest no easy fix.
      I welcome CMT if not attending school or Working. Great “net working” from attendees in future life, Look at Singapore.
      What not is right , Is sitting on your Arse doing nothing. In a cruel kind of way NZ’ers are complicit in doing so / and or allowing this too happen.

I guess it’s the same in gangs but sadly they are pointed in the wrong direction and are against the greater community ie US !     Yes CMM, I can’t quite see the ram raiders doing the true barracks treatment – with Company Sergeant looking for dust with a white glove atop the window panes and such.
    But the LSV were not doing military induction training either. It was a specific programme,and more about team work than live firing.
    I am certain the programme for ferals will be different again to LSV.
    
    I do wonder how these kids might adapt. A few might love it, and many will struggle, and some might fight it or lose their minds (I have seen volunteers for army basic both drop out and even lose their minds a bit, so compelled attendees will need a very particular course).
    
    On the other hand, a few might benefit, and others hate it – but I don’t care!
    Even if they get returned to their families and peers later, it does mean 12 months respite – and a way to remove them from society without prison or home detention being the only option.
    I am all for it….and if need be, send them back for 12 months every year!

  My Grandson did that Limited Service Volunteer course 2 years ago.
  6 weeks and he thoroughly enjoyed it. He didn’t need straightening out, just heard about it and wanted to do it. Got new friends as well.
  We watched the dismissal parade at Whenuapai Air Base. They demonstrated what they had learnt. Very Maori influence, but no big deal.

There are massive parallels between the Musk/Twitter and the Wayne Brown/Auckland CC shitstorms.

In both cases there are a lot of over-entitled surplus employees who are going from their arses in butter to getting fired or having their cushy world severely redefined.

They are squealing and the media is generally packing in on the side of “the workers” against the “right wing boss”.

One big difference though is that I really don’t care if Twitter craters and catches fire. I would not want that fate for Auckland. Auckland has some wonderful places – like the departures lounge at the airport.

One sidelight to the debate over National’s youth crime announcement yesterday. No one seems to have made the connection between this, and the social investment approach, first introduced by Bill English, which Nicola Willis is championing.

Whilst the overwhelming majority of offenders in the current ram raid/aggravated burglary epidemic are in the 10 to 17 age bracket, social investment has the potential to significantly reduce the number of potential young offenders coming through the system. Using data in a number of categories which raise red flags, National hopes that early identification and intervention will help reduce the numbers of young children who go off the rails later in life.

Social investment will probably be too late for the current crop of ram-raiders, so other corrective action needs to be taken, hence yesterday’s announcement. The chorus of criticism from the usual suspects on the Left suggests that they are worried about National’s announcement giving the opposition a significant boost in popularity.

After Bill English lead National to its worst ever election result in 2002, Don Brash was able to to almost carry the 2o05 election in a leadership that was publicly defined by the Orewa speech and the Iwi/Kiwi adverts.
Given the lack of cut through National are getting with the “we’re woker than you” strategy maybe there are lessons to be learned?
Leaders are able to persuade and change the direction of public discourse, opportunists ty to slime their way in by following the crowd.

  So in 2022 there is an unfortunate reality around ‘slowly slowly catchee monkey’. I hate to say it, but capture the middle ground is a thing. Let Seymour be the voice of reason for classic liberals and small government.

I was told last night that people wanting to build accommodation for RSE workers have been told that they have to house the homeless when they don’t have any RSE workers. Not sure how true it is but FGS no-one in their right mind would want that. incidentally I saw a man in an almost brand new large ute coming out of one of the homeless motels in town. The ute was so large he could have put a tent over the back and slept a family there.

sit back, Hurrell said.” Fonterra will meet with farmers before the end of the year to set targets.
Translation; while Fonterra admits it farmers have one third the carbon footprint of overseas competitors, Fonterra will cull more suppliers and production for the sake of politics so that much more carbon is emitted overseas.
Fortunately Fonterra Farmers voted to gut the share price so exiting farmers won’t get much for their shares.

What’s happening in our universities?

Morgan Godfery wrote a piece yesterday called “Saying we’re post-pandemic is a purely political ploy ” an article on covid and politcs. His expertise? Stuff bios him : “Morgan Godfery is a senior lecturer in the department of marketing at the University of Otago. He has a background in journalism and public policy, including as a parliamentary staffer with the Labour Party. He is a regular opinion contributor to Stuff.”

So he is writing about covid and politics but his expertise is marketing? Or is it. Stuff says he has a journalism background and public policy. What is his actual academic qualifications and from where. They don’t say.

University of Otago says “Morgan is a Senior Lecturer teaching into the Bachelor of Entrepreneurship. ”

So does Morgan have a Marketing or Business degree and from where? They don’t say. And what Entrepreneurial experience does he have and what businesses has he started? Also unknown.

UoOtago says “Morgan comes to the Bachelor of Entrepreneurship after a successful career in journalism and public policy. He is currently the te ao Māori editor at Metro and a fortnightly columnist for both the Guardian and Stuff. Morgan is also a former Parliamentary staffer for the late Hon. Parekura Horomia.

Morgan’s research interests include public law, iwi governance structures, social enterprises, and the entrepreneurial state. He has published extensively in the field of public law – including constitutional law, local government law, and citizenship – and New Zealand politics. His current research focuses on social enterprises and entrepreneurship.”

They list his publications – which are almost exclusively on politics, and not academic journals. They include stuff and union articles and panels analysing the last political debate. eg. ” 5 experts on the first TV leaders’ debate of NZ’s election. The Conversation. ” , “Is it time for a basic income? “, “Representing indigenous peoples in a modern parliament.” , ” The Labour-led government: One year on [Panel discussion]. ” I could find none which include anything on marketing or entrepreneurship or social entrepreunership.

Maybe I’m missing something. But our universities seem increasingly being used as supporting political commentators.

And I am still left wondering on Godfery’s qualifications for the wide ranging opinon articles which we see in our papers each day.

I attended a seminar yesterday where the Bill on the amendment of Director’s duties was discussed. The presenter made an interesting observation that the new list of duties was based on work done by Blackrock. Always interesting to hear that name pop up when Labour are working through legislation. I wonder if the word “May” will be replaced by the word “Must” after submissions.

Wired Magazine in an article on yellow as the default skin tone of emojis, notes a study showed most White users ignore software tools available for modifying the colour, and stay with yellow emojis.

The writer notes that the Simpsons video cartoons use yellow for skin colour as a default for White people, and doesn’t use yellow for characters of other races.

  We have a Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister that lie on a daily basis, we have a Government that is out of touch with reality , we have a Government that won’t listen and won’t be told that has turned out to be ignorant and arrogant lead by a bunch of bullies that want to devide New Zealander’s with there racial views and policy that they want a need to push through before 2023.
  If New Zealander’s don’t get behind the National and Act Leaders to stop this Government and their Maori agenda you deserve the Government you get because without National the Labour Party are looking like becoming the Government for several years.

It seems that some people are perpetually stupid. I would have suggested that having 3 vehicles swamped crossing a particular ford, might have been enough to either:
a) buy a more suitable vehicle for ford crossing

There’s been a major U-turn by the Government at the eleventh hour after Newshub learned a Hamilton school, that’s been successfully keeping young people away from crime, was to be shut down.

Staff and the Oranga Tamariki youths who attend the Kauri Centre for at-risk youth learned of the impending closure on Friday morning after the Ministry of Education unveiled its plans to Newshub.

Hours later the Associate Minister of Education overruled her officials’
