So travel insurers are saying that custiomers should take up claims for lost bags with airlines directly. I thought the whole idea of travel insurance is the insurance company would compensate the customer then handle a claim on behalf of a customer. The insurer has the ex[erience and clout when dealing with the responsible airline etc. It is far too easy for the ordinary customer to be give the runaround. It is rather like a car insurer saying that the customer should deal directly with the other driver if the prang was the other driver’s fault.
I view travel insurance as having no more value than buying a ‘good luck charm’ off Gladstone Gander (the lucky goose in Donald Duck comics). Also it merely subsidises fraudsters who make inflated claims.

  Generally Insurances covers Acidental Loss or Damage – neither apply here as the bags have been neither lost or damaged.
  They will be found sooner rather than later just delayed.

    Not true. The contract is between the insurer and the traveller, not the airline.
    
    If they arrive at their destination but their bag does not, then it is perfectly reasonable for the insured (the traveller) to say to the insurer that the bag has been lost.
    
    The insurer position is the same as saying “take it up with the council” if you drop your phone while walking on the street.
    
    I’ll not stand for my insurer trying that on with me. I’ll soon find out since at the end of this month I am going on a dirt bike tour through Laos and Vietnam. If my bag of riding gear doesn’t turn up in Vientiane, I fully expect the insurer to pay for replacement stuff so I can go on the ride.

  Not sure about that. Lost bags are usually found and if they are not, airlines provide compensation.
  
  Several years ago, a colleague was in the USA on business. He decided to go mountain biking on a weekend. Broke his neck. He eventually recovered. Insurance covered all his hospital treatment and his transport back to New Zealand. I would not travel without travel insurance.

    The airline compensation for luggage is appalling. It in no way covers the actual loss.
    
    I am going on a dirt bike riding trip soon in SE Asia. In my bag is helmet, MX boots, riding pants, body armour, knee armour… If the bag doesn’t arrive before the trip starts (2 days grace) I have to buy replacements, at least helmet and boots otherwise the tour leader won’t let me start.
    
    That’s what the insurance is for

      You can change out of it on the plane.
      
      When I used to go on international dive trips I never let my computer/regs/mask out of my sight.
      I can buy undies and tee shirts, but the dive gear is very personal.

  Not taking travel insurance is your choice, obviously, but for me its a no brainer. Ive only ever had to use it once, but boy did I need it.
  
  Living in London, off to the US to run in the NY marathon. Post race, walking to hotel, got accidently pushed off my feet (and of course, post run, not much mobility) and fractured my pelvis.
  
  The costs in the US were horrific, and I took the option of repatriation as well – private jet across the pond. Hate to think what it would have cost me without insurance.

  peter – our experiences with travel insurance claims, usually medical consultations or for lost items, have been excellent over the years..
  
  In saying that we have not had a claim for over 12 years, despite travelling 3 or 4 times overseas in that period.

The Herald launched its election campaign today. Simon Wilson opened the batting. It was a shade subtle but quite clear as to where they are heading and who they want to see occupying the Government benches. Apparently, it is a choice between the “best” government yet or the “worst”. Ardern, heavily propped up by a strong Green party helping her achieve all that Labour believes in is being touted. They know the electorate will not buy into Labour promising to suddenly find a way to deliver and becoming competent after years of total inadequacy but throwing a much larger Green party into the mix and “WOW” – the ‘best” government yet is possible.

For those who think Labour is stuffed and the Nats will roar home just pause and consider that it is Labour, Greens and MSM teaming up to campaign and the majority of voters do not read Kiwiblog. When you invest $55 million you expect a dividend.

  None of us know what people think Tomtoddy. It may well be that Labour believes the dust will settle and it has positives on its side such as tourists here again and overseas students’ keenness to return stymied by the difficulty in plane seat availability, also the surprising resilience in the economy.
  Many people might be over the criticisms National has displayed for a long time. Ultimately become wary of a new leader who has called a significant part of the community bottom feeders and so on.
  The wheels falling off should help National if that continues to happen, if it resists endless criticism and is measured and slick it will have more than a good chance at the Treasury Benches.
  But despite what all the best pundits may predict, no one can assume where “Instant” Peters may end up.
  Meanwhile, on KB many people are likely to say the same things they’ve said for years and many contributors will stick with the tried and true of trying to squeeze out the mandatory political insults in a new way as it grows further and further away from the opinions of younger NZ.

    Brian, do you believe that the NZ’s current young/youth cohort will be any different from the legions that came before them in that, generally speaking, they will vote ‘left’ when young and progressively move ‘right’ as they mature and take on more responsibility?
    
    If so, please tell us why.
    
    Also, should we be paying any attention to what our youth think about things where their ideas are flawed, conclusions are faulty and/or logic is impaired or absent?
    
    Or should we do as they say even though we know them to be wrong?

They know not what an environment consisting of energetic people who are chasing dreams of reaping the benefits of their own efforts and risks taken, of people expanding their skills and knowledge so that they can advance themselves in their society, of people selflessly committing themselves to the service of others regardless of the personal cost, actually looks like.

  This is quite revealing of Wilson.
  
  What will it take for him to admit that the performance of his beloved Labour Party has been dire?
  
  What ruin and devastation must occur for him to say they’ve been calamitous and need to go?
  
  Or is there no destruction and waste too great for this to occur? Would he back them and sing their praises irrespective of the damage they’ve wrought? I suspect this is the case. He is welded to Labour and there would be no circumstances where he would admit they’ve failed as a government and failed us as citizens.
  
  I believe it’s the same with those lefty teachers and principals who opposed charter schools – even if presented with stark, factual and irrefutable evidence that some charter schools were delivering better for parents and kids than the mainstream they would still oppose them with foam-flecked anger.
  
  It’s because concern for the incumbents, special interests and the status quo trumps results for parents and children.
  
  With Wilson it’s the party which must come first – actual results come way down the list.

      Ian, I think you will find the charter schools were pretty much all outperforming public schools in certain age groups. I seem to recall when Labour (Hipkins) were in opposition they were whining about NCEA results at all the Charter Schools being rigged as they were quite a bit better than Public Schools?

    ….. There are many, many, others but FFS at least fix those in term 1.
    
    As an aside, government is going to need to admit that New Zealand cannot any longer afford universal aged pensions at 65. I know that this has been political poison, but as I keep saying, government needs to lead. The age needs to be transitioned to 68 over 10 years. That will free up the fiscal headroom to tackle pressing problems.

      Yeah, yeah. But there is a difference between what you need to do when you are in power, and what you need to say to get there in the first place. National needs to win back the votes that it lost to Labour last time, and to do that it needs to stay within shouting distance of the centre. Moving to the right may win them votes from ACT, but it will lose them the far more to Labour.

        OK a question. The state of education achievement in schools is nothing short of a national emergency. What do you suggest that the incoming government should do to fix it?
        
        I can tell you that a ‘recruitment freeze’ at the Ministry of Education and ‘conversations’ with the teachers unions is not going to achieve a damn thing. Neither will the education policies of the last John Key led government. His education ministers were every bit as useless as the current one.
        
        So what do we do? Just give up as New Zealand sinks to the actual bottom of OECD schooling achievement levels?

        National will not be able to do anything about education, or any of the other disaster areas that Labour has created or exacerbated for us, unless they first win the election. Their focus at this point has to be on doing that, and if that means keeping quiet about the unpopular but necessary actions they’re going to have to do once they are in power, then so be it.
        
        Voters say they want honesty in politicians, but they sure as shit don’t vote for it.

        Well here us my alternative hypothesis. National has no clue how to fix the schooling system. It will only be fixed if David Seymour or Brooke van Velden have the education portfolio and brings the rest of Cabinet with them – which is far from certain.

    To be fair, many a leftist supporter is as dumb as a sack of hammers so this might work.
    An actual example: a Labour supporter said to us recently ” all Indians are liars”, we politely enquired how did you come to this stunning conclusion about an entire race of people? : “because that guy from Hamiliton said that Labour were bullies and Jacinda said that wasn’t true, therefore all Indians are liars”.

Efeso Collins looks set to become the latest high-profile Labour Party member to defect:

The Green Party is in the midst of formally selecting the candidates it intends to run at the 2023 election.

Multiple Green Party sources have tipped former Auckland mayoral candidate Efeso Collins as a likely candidate with a shot at getting a good list ranking, although this is far from guaranteed.

With current MPs Eugenie Sage and Jan Logie retiring at the election, two spots have opened up in a winnable part of the party list. The Greens are currently polling slightly higher than at the 2020 election, raising the possibility the party might add one or more MPs to its caucus in 2023. The party currently has 10 MPs.

It’s not a good look for Labour when someone of Collins’ standing defects. Up until last year he was an Auckland councillor under the Labour Party banner, and was endorsed in his unsuccessful Auckland mayoralty campaign by the Prime Minister, and countless Labour MP’s and Ministers. He also received endorsements from Auckland Green Party MP’s.

Will he now be treated as a pariah by Labour, as fellow defector Dr Gaurav Sharma was? Or will he be allowed a dignified exit? One thing is for sure though; this is VERY bad news for James Shaw, who only retained the Green co-leadership last year because no one stood against him.

  There’s not just one forestry company that was responsible for the slash trash on the East Coast.
  
  That has always been a major card that the companies have played. If you can’t prove where the log on the beach or in the stream came from, then you can’t blame a particular Company.
  
  However following the 2018 floods, the following Forestry companies were (lightly) fined:
  Earnslaw 1, Aratu Forests Limited (formerly Hikurangi Forest Farms Limited), Juken NZ Limited, DNS Forest Products 2009 Limited and PF Olsen Limited.

    2. Ownership of those hectares is A=20%, B=10%, C=60% etc
    3. Costs are $$$
    4. Pay pro rata to your ownership.

      Probable result, a considerable increase in slips and erosion.
      Forestry there but no milling.
      Result is Gisborne loses much of its income.
      Apart from the limited amount of coastal shipping there would be no income for wharfies or, apart from Tourism vessel visits, a port.
      The reason the forestry is there is that the large sheep and beef stations became unprofitable and nothing else made economic sense.
      Much of this area is steep.
      Unless the answer is some sort of economically viable use of ‘slash’ it is hard to see an answer to this problem.

An interesting take on how the covid narrative is unfolding in Offguardian.

Many people have quickly realised that this narrative is fraudulent, some genuinely still don’t get it and some are in total denial. Particularly those who advocated strongest for more punishment for the “transgressors” and those who are culpable for the harm done.

There used to be a time when defeat was part of life and a person learned from their mistakes or failures. Now everyone gets a prize just for participating. The jabbed want their prize, and damned if they are going to back down until they get it. “I was loyal to the cause all the way to the end!”

Down they will go in their arrogance, ignorance, and stubbornness. Too bad. As cliché as it is to say, we are indeed in this together. The sheep are not the enemy. They may have had weaknesses that make them responsible for this shite show, but they didn’t create it, and they got nothing for being loyal to their puppet masters, that’s for sure.

These poor folks are our brothers and our sisters. We are ready to welcome them back to the human race with open arms, but that is impossible if they continue to swear their allegiance to the enemy.

From today’s Herald: “Senior nurses appointed to Starship to address Māori health inequity”

“Two new nurse directors at Starship Child health will help address health inequity for Māori by championing Māori health and leading Te Tiriti across nursing,”. There is now a “nurse director tangata whenua” and a “nurse director tangata tiriti” to “ensure equal decision-making, mandate power sharing and ensure the interest of Māori communities are at the forefront.”

For some bizarre reason, I thought the interests of sick children were meant to be at the forefront of Starship.

But “Te Tumu Whakarae o Starship (Māori health director) Toni Shepherd says that actualising equity through shared decision-making is well overdue.

“The colonial health structures of Aotearoa require radical transformation to dismantle the inequities prevalent in child Health.

“Co-directorship within child health is an opportunity to realise Te Tiriti in action and, ultimately, we need to re-imagine a child healthcare system that is mokopuna-centric, whānau-focused and whānau-led.””

Then again, I thought child health inequities had something to do with parenting, families and communities. And that our colonial health structures had mostly been torn down and replaced with far more modern buildings, equipped with up-to-date luxuries like electric power and indoor running water.

        ra; Thank you, I am aware of Dr Reti’s work on this and his recommendations. I have great hope that Dr Reti has a major influence on New Zealand’s future and not solely relating to health. He is one of the few National personalities I hold in any sort of admiration.
        My comment was more of a general statement / criticism, not specifically health. Their fear of Labour stealing any of their policy is a weak excuse.

  Te Tiriti this would be the all-wise future-anticipating living document which would seem to mention the non-Maori settler portion of the population, now about 83 percent, only once – and indirectly, at that – as “all British subjects”?
  I challenge anyone to indicate in the Treaty – in fact, perhaps, just a badl=worded, out-dated real estate agreement – where else the majority of non-Maori New Zealanders is actually mentioned.

The emphasis was on finding the cause of the illness, and getting rid of the spirit or dealing with the transgression responsible for it, rather than on patient care.”

  The determinant factors of ‘healthy children’ are pretty damn obvious. It has nothing to do with the Treaty.
  
  – Good nutrition
  – Parents model healthy behaviours – no drug use or excess drinking
  – Regular exercise, also modelled by parents
  – Regular medical checks
  – Get childhood vaccinations for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, hepatitis, chickenpox, measles. mumps and rubella.
  
  In New Zealand, it is parents who are overwhelming determinants of the health of their children. People who are too stupid to do that should not have children.

There has been a few conversations around vaping and its use as a tool to get people off the external combustion version of their addiction plus the “I like it so FO and leave me alone” type of conversations BUT, have you ever pulled one of the discarded disposables apart?
Here it’s what’s inside a tube type version of disposable vape.

The thing looks like a penny whistle without the side holes and is made from aluminium.
Bottom up is a cap with an air hole and LED light.
Inside over the air hole is a switch activated by the incoming air.
The switch is connected to a triple “A” lithium battery.
Above the battery is a heater coil wrapped in a heatproof foam impregnated with chemicals.
Above that is the mouthpiece.
So air is sucked in, activates the little switch turning on the led and the coil.
Fascinating!

It lasts the user around three days then the whole thing is sent to the landfill or under trees in a park or in the sand on the beach, side of the road, gutter, front lawn basically any place you would find a traditional cig butt.

Disposable Vaping, starbucks drinking protesters are funny people, as in farking hilarious.

  The fire risk of dumping thousands of things like that in the rubbish are huge.
  
  If the thing gets crushed, the chances of it shorting and starting a fire are not high, but given millions of them is possibly quite high.
  
  There are multiple reasons why batteries (inc. AAA and AA cells) should not be thrown in the normal waste stream including both the chemicals inside getting into the environment and risk of fires.

NZIER has just released the results of its latest business confidence survey. Overall, it makes for grim reading:

Business confidence has sunk to its lowest level since the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research began surveying sentiment in 1970, on a seasonally adjusted basis, the research firm says.

NZIER said its latest quarterly survey of business opinion made for grim reading, with a net 73% of businesses expecting conditions to worsen over the coming months.

“Business confidence is the weakest in the history of the survey,” NZIER said.

“Firms have become much more cautious and are now looking to reduce staff numbers.”

A net 9% were expecting to cut staff early this year, it found.

In Auckland Council’s “Our Auckland” magazine this month: “Puhoi’s awa (river) carves a path through the town, creating a haven for humans and wildlife, including tuna (eels)”.

The river didn’t carve a path through the town; it was there first and the town was built on the banks of the river. And surely a clue that you should use English words in your sentences (apart from the fact that you’re writing in English) is when the Maori word is actually also a word in English – but with a different meaning!

Hate waiting for the kids to open their ncea results….. like a box of chocolates.

Daughter did well though, considering the crap show year with teacher’s only and union days, 1 week off with covid, 1 week off with flu, couple of ‘relationship learning’ days (Sophie Elliot’s mum is behind this), compulsory haka learning ….

Scholarship results not for another 3 weeks though…more waiting! Our daughter takes the hard subjects too, so her results are more akin to bursary/sixth form cert from the old days. None of the BS rubbish subjects that are on offer to guarantee passing.

It’s about time teachers reschedule union and teachers only days in the school holidays!

For instance, Chelsea Handler (actress, comedian, writer) has just admitted in an interview with Jimmy Fallon that until she was 40, she thought the sun and the moon were the same thing. Carlo Cipolla’s theory of stupidity says that there are way, way more stupid people around than anyone realises. Next time you hear someone in the entertainment industry speak on anything other than entertainment, reflect on Chelsea Handler, the moon and the sun.

How will 15 minute cities work in NZ.

If you look at the map of Auckland showing job distribution, there are next to no jobs in West Auckland. And the problem is bigger than the map shows as most of the rural coastal suburbs are cut off and hidden behind the map legend.

15 minute cities are proposed by those living in the most elite neighbourhoods who have received most of the cities investment.

    Not entirely true.
    I have just read of the new huge Pacifica Multigenerational state home in Papakura.
    Three to six bedrooms two storyy designed specifically for Pacifica people and extended families. Even the garages are enlarged, as they can be converted to more accomodation, or similar, as are the master bedrooms so a family or part can live there.
    Am not sure how many people will live in it and what is the cost to the taxpayer for its special construction and what rent – if any will be paid.
    Great idea though – the start of many ?
    But would like to know the construction cost we are paying.
    I know it is from some Pacifica special fund we know nothig about as taxpayers fund it in someway.
    I hope they come clean please.

      Older New Zealand housing stock was built for the families of the time with the resources available back then. Why not simply acknowledge that without the nastiness? Or does he honestly believe that the builders back then could foresee the arrival of large numbers of Pacific Islanders wanting to live in multi-generational housing, but were such nasty racists that they deliberately didn’t build for them?

    No need to destroy transport. Hopefully, the Hon. Julie Anne Genter working tirelessly on behalf of the poor (including West Tamaki Makarauans as well of course), will provide everyone with a late model non-polluting electric vehicle. Already quite a high proportion of NZ destitute have taken up this form of transport. Funded by the levies on the polluting ICE vehicles driven mostly by the rich. The only problem is, how will she fund them once there’re no longer any ICE vehicles left? May be by a levy on meat-eaters?

  Unfortunately, we missed the opportunity to put the cities industrial and commercial sites alongside the new motorways, which would have spread them throughout the city. And if we’d developed a decent public transport system parallel to the motorways, then allowed denser housing between the commercial areas and the low density family homes, we might have made a fairly livable city.

The government has declared a so called climate emergency. Perhaps there are now other more higher priorities, and as they say, charity begins at home:

1. A roading emergency – a pothole pandemic
2. An education crisis – truancy tornado
3. Lawlessness – a crime wave hurricane
4. Poverty – the whole country is sinking into a financial abyss
5. Confidence – the people of this country do not have faith anymore, in the government, even the opposition.

Above all there is a massive distrust of the attempts to manage our thoughts and information. The “podium of truth” has become the “odium of truth”, as the corruption in media, medicine and policing is now being revealed by payouts, coercion, and greed.

People have been forced to accept an unproven, and now proven to be fatal medical intervention, proclaimed to be safe and effective. Now papers show our government and its officlas knew in advance, yet still went ahead. Secret papers were signed, and scientific research was attempted to be made secret for 76 years.

I have no faith Christopher Luxon will rock the boat, and I’m dsiappoitned that David Seymour made himself complicit. He may be rueing the day he signed on to their corrupt programme, and hopefully at some point will reveal what pressures were brought to bear to get his support.

To all politicians out there, people on the street have their own sources of information now. The Six O’Clock News is now defunct. It cannot be believed, and yes you will still fool some, but anyway with credibility, and the courage and balls to call them out, will find huge support out there.

A trip to Whangarei dentist makes you despair for the country. The proportion of drivers with barely functional brains is scary. The number who know what to do, when to do it and how to do it (professional truck drivers excepted) is depressingly small. Going down I followed a good driver for twenty minutes just to enjoy the pleasure of good judgement and smooth, safe travel. Then on the way home I felt my brain had been fried behind a pack of zombies. No wonder these people vote idiots into Government.

I have been doing family research on the Papers Past site. I discovered that one of my great grand fathers (a widower) died on 13th August 1911. Boring? Yeah. But what got me was that on 25th August 1911 they were able to have an auction of his household contents AND the seven bedroomed house he owned.
Nowadays it takes 14 days for the High Court to return a telephone call.

I’ve just been rung by somebody close to me.

They have had cause to hear from a client that they have just been told by a major supplier to Waka Kotahi that they have been unsuccessful in a recent tender for (more) work because Waka Kotahi requires them, the major supplier, to give a percentage of their work to Maori-owned organisations and this latest tender must therefore be awarded to a Maori organisation.

The major supplier said “Sorry, you guys are great but we have to award this work to a Maori firm even though they’re not as good and more expensive.”

I believe this person who called me 100% that this is true and accurate.

This racial discrimination which has crept into New Zealand is morally wrong. It is wrong irrespective of motive and of who it supposedly benefits.

It will benefit only an elite and at the expense of us all and is a perfect mechanism to drive great discord and disharmony between people.

I understand the government now requires ministries and departments to ensure 5% of their procurement to be awarded to Maori organisations. Does anyone really believe this won’t be increased over time by politicians looking for payola from Maori elites and so-called community leaders?

Some people will say that we need policies like this to honour the treaty. What absolute horseshit. What a great lie. The treaty specifically says that Maori will be accorded exactly the same rights as British citizens. Not more rights. Not different rights. Not more privileges or advantages. The same.

This is bad. Really bad.

  I saw for myself that someone at my work had to pay to get a translator for a document written in Te Reo even though the document itself could have well been written in English. From what I saw think it had nothing to do with anything Maori either.

  If water falls on your land and you capture it in a rainwater tank, you can’t take more than your land receives – if your tanks run dry, you have pay to have water trucked in.
  
  If you put down a well, you are taking water from an underground source. Some of the water in that underground source will have got there by falling on your land, but not all of it. So it would be possible to draw more water from the well than your land contributes to the underground source. Is that something you should have a “right” to do?
  
  Someone taking more than they contribute could lead to a shortage of water for other people using the same underground source, or to subsidence of land and damage to property. It would seem to make sense to require well owners to measure their take, to ensure the continued viability of the resource for all users. I’d imagine a small charge would cover the administrative costs (consultation, collecting, collating, publishing, whatever other measures the group decides on).
  
  But I really can’t see how you would justify charging for the water itself. “Water” charges for town supply are actually not for the water, they are for the costs of collecting, treating and delivering it.
