One of the great bastions of democracy is having the freedom to mock, satirise and ridicule the Government of the day.
In the UK there are numerous dailies and TV programmes that fulfill this function.
The US also have a free press and programs like South Park ever ready to prick the inflated balloon of the Government.
NZ used to have a media capable of nurturing this – A Week of it, McPhail & Gadsby, Tom Scott, daily newspaper cartoonists mocking Muldoon, Lange, Bolger, Clarke, Key.
Now we have…well, sorry but we have a large media entity called Stuff, who’s stable of cartoonists are unable to find anything worth satirising in the Government, but who continue to attack the Opposition on a daily basis.
You would think Stuff would be embarrassed and employ a broader range of cartoonists to display a diversity of opinion. Instead, they claim there is no inherent bias in their cartoons.

It is a worrying trend – one that would be very comfortable in Russia and North Korea.

    I dont go to stuff every day, but I always check the cartoon. Haven’t seen an anti Labour for at least 5 years. It used to be that cartoons poked fun at the ruling party but apparently thats only true if they are not your friends.

        Unfortunately the Herald isn’t any better than Stuff. (See link below) In fact the Herald’s subterfuge could make it more insidious than overtly Labour supporting stuff.
        
        NZ media should be ashamed their despicable one sided reporting is providing cover for the inept Labour Government and is costing our country billions.
        
        Where are our captains of industry who should be setting up and supporting a factual centre right media outlet? Another term of labour will surely cost them much more than the creation and operation of an online media outlet.

    Didn’t know about Dilbert. Used to ‘read’ his cartoons daily. This morning on my Insta feed a got a ‘mock’ dilbert cartoon saying ‘Sales of my 90s cartoon are down so now I am going full racist’. All the comments agreeing that Scott Adams has gone hard right and is now, therefore, a racist.

        Colville, the poll was by Rasmussen and 47% of respondents responded that they were unable to say that it was OK to be white. Scott Adams then joked that he had been identifying as black lately, but had accidentally joined a hate group. He also made comments about treating people as individuals, and staying away from a group that does not respect you (black americans) and then this “Is it racist to avoid racists who are the same race as each other? Or is it only racist if the racists you are avoiding are white?”. Which elicited the usual crap from the woke-ist’s. The best response however was some guy with “Thanks to Scott Adams, today I learned that it’s not racist for half of black people to dislike white people, but it is racist to point it out.” Bah hah!

  I have also been thinking about this today. Does Stuff have some kind of fascist leaning? 1. The anti democratic nature of cartoons that demonise opposition parties. 2. The elevation of a particular race. 3. The number of articles supporting state centralised control of the country and economy. 4. Under Jacinda Ardern premiership it was intolerant of any criticism of the leader. 5. It leans into an ideology and will not allow comments criticising that ideology.

        The issue always is ‘who knows the political leaning’. We here know that ‘Fox news’ is a right leaning news source. Many in NZ deride them for that and none (AFAIK) of our news outlets source / run stories from Fox.
        
        CNN is the opposite of Fox, a left wing site. It surprises me the number of people here (and around the world) that consider CNN as a good non biased source of news. Most (all) of our news outlets regurlay source stories from CNN and oftern interview CNN journalists for opinion on US current affairs.
        
        We might ‘know’ Stuff is a hard left publication but I gaurantee a large part of NZ society does not.

The media edited out Maureen Pugh‘s reference to Shaw not providing answers to local Council questions asked of Shaw about climate change. It was the “evidence” for the local council before they impacted ratepayers, that Pugh referred to in an amateurish attempted hit job on Shaw – she should have left that to more competent National people – if they have them.

The media committed a classic act of Misinformation
Luxon’s response cemmented in the media’s Misinformation.

Pugh herself didn’t deny climate change, but her statement was deliberately twisted by the media to incite contempt for the National Party.
And the National Party’s Leader actually helped the media in their dirty politics.

Jacinda Ardern said “when you see it, you know it”, but when National Party Leader Luxon doesn’t even see it, how will your average voter know it?

Or worse, do what Luxon did.

He should have told the media, “Pugh was trying to hit up Shaw for being slack. But the media misquoted her, or didn’t actually quote her fully. Of course she herself believes humans contribute to climate change.”

But it isn’t

Luxon should be announcing he will root out the “3 Waters” Maori Advisory Council to Taumata Arowai instead of being rear-gunner on a milk truck for Maureen Pugh.

    Many on here are former National supporters but who have figured out that National and particularly Luxon, are no longer the conservatives that we we formerly supported.
    The best recent description is that National has become “socialism with a blue tie”. Even Seymour has it right. The National party is merely Labour with a blue wash.
    The Nats have lost it. They have become infected by the left. That’s why we are heading ACT’s way. Not perfect, by any stretch but National has left us with one choice.
    We will never vote Labour or Greens but National’s desire to move to the middle actually has them moving left and the left disgust us.

        What they got was Luxon to go all in on AGW, man-made killer cyclones hunting innocent Kiwis, and unequivocal commitment to Net Zero, Paris, and all the other “good global citizen” suicide-pact mechanisms, all tied up in a few nicely quotable soundbites with no wiggle room.
        
        In short, they got him to admit to Labour and Green ideological imperatives.

Rob Campbell is Chair of Te Whatu Ora – Health NZ. He posted a completely partisan post on linked in yesterday mocking National’s 3 Waters policy. Here’s some of it:
“What on earth would make anyone think this was a sensible idea for debt raising alone, let alone the managment and delivery of the tasks.
Geographic and social inequities deepening while the infrastructure rots.
I can only think that this is a thin disguise for the dog whistle on “co-governance”.
In his role he needs to be above politics – ordinarily he’ll be working for the Nats later this year, unless he intends to do the honorable thing and resign.

  He needs to stop jockstrap sniffing and get back to his day job. Making political statements is all well and good for pollies and their mates, but not OK for chairs of Crown entities, who are explicitly bound by a code of conduct to be politically neutral.
  
  Rob has now demonstrated he is a partisan fool, so if he had any integrity he would resign. (he won’t of course)
  
  what is funnier is that Hipkins stated that this was a breach of the code, and Campbell told him to go fuck himself.

About 2 to 3 months into the National led govt Luxon & co will get blamed for every social ill imaginable. So much shit will be heaped upon National, by Labo/Gween, left wing, MSM & those mostly useless “charity” NGOs.

National will get blamed for everything, housing, mental health, displaced persons, poverty. Across any social measure National will get blamed.

Does National have a research unit? They could document now all the social problems racing NZ and widely release this information. In one document. Attempt to head off what will otherwise be a constant commie struggle session, Luxon will not be able to cope with the pressure. Everyone can see.

I was interested to read a story about traffic congestion in Auckland this morning.
All sorts of reasons were given as contributing factors, but the lowering of speed limits (which necessarily means that cars are on the roads for longer periods of time) was not part of the list.
Yes, I know, you’re often not doing the speed limit when the roads are busy, but lowering the limits has made more roads busier, and so this must add to congestion.
Another thing I’ve observed is that there’s been this drive to putting speed humps at pedestrian crossings. This results in many drivers slowing to a crawl as they pass over them. The fairly new one down the road from me has resulted in traffic backing up for hundreds of metres down the road in both directions. The actual pedestrian crossing signal hasn’t even been activated# so it’s not like drivers are being stopped to let pedestrians cross – it’s simply the hump that’s causing the congestion.

  If the traffic is reduced to a crawl because the the roads are clogged with too many cars it doesn’t matter what the speed limit is.
  I see some fool drove a vehicle into the Waterview Tunnel that was too high.
  That most certainly won’t help the congestion problem.

But we should not lose sight of the big picture: China is rearming massively, developing hypersonic rockets and establishing bases in our sphere. We cannot avoid a substantial increase in defence investment, to at least 2% of GDP, after decades of neglect by both parties.

The problem is that we are so beholden to China that we won’t take a stand on the behaviour of the Chinese government that directly affected New Zealand and the entire world. Our country was locked down, several thousand people have died, people were confined to their homes, people died alone without the comfort of their relatives and our economy was shut down costing billions of dollars.

What if it is all true? That the virus, which was weaponised by the Wuhan laboratory, escaped from the lab and infected people around Wuhan. That the Chinese shut down Wuhan but allowed people to go overseas. That the Chinese did this deliberately so that other economies would be affected, not just their own?

You would think that the West would be more concerned about the Chinese government’s behaviour than they appear to be? Surely this is very close to an act of war?

This was so that not only would China suffer but the rest of the world would suffer and not get ahead of China.

    Yes, Yabster. It is. It’s a bit earlier than usual this year – Auckland Uni start their classes today. And it’s made worse by a couple of factors: first, the railway beds are being rebuilt, so buses are replacing trains on some routes. Which means those buses can’t be used to run additional services elsewhere in Auckland.
    And second, at the end of last year operators were short about 500 bus drivers. Now its down to only 400, but it takes time to train the new drivers and without drivers, it really doesn’t matter whether or not you have buses.
    
    Hence the advice from Auckland Transport that if you can change your travel time, it might be a good idea to do so.

  Ironically, I had a much better drive to work than last week with Abbotts Way near Remuera golf course being free flowing. last week traffic was backed up the length of it.

    No, Inandout, it’s not 900,000 “which have none”. It’s 900,000 who have some Maori descent that they know about. And of those registered to vote, about half have chosen the Maori roll.
    
    Which makes sense, since the 900,000 would range from people who know they have a Maori ancestor to people who may have only one fully non-Maori ancestor. It would also range from people who pay no attention to their Maori heritage, except for ticking the box when asked, to people who are deeply involved – and the two ranges don’t necessarily correlate. You can have very little Maori heritage but be deeply involved in it, or you can have a lot but no daily connection with it.

        Unfortunately, registering as a Maori with the census won’t give you access to Iwi money – I think you’ll find the Iwi know who their members are and won’t add you to the roll without proof you really belong.

        I could possibly join up with Tuhoe as I am an honorary member of Tuhoe through much intermarriage back in the late 1800’s.

Will she have the resolve to sack Te Whatu Ora chairman and former trade unionist Rob Campbell for his blatantly political comments about National’s Three Waters proposald over the weekend? He is clearly in breach of Te Kawa Mataaho Public Service Commission’s Code of Conduct, which expressly states:

We are politically impartial
We act in a politically impartial manner. Irrespective of our political interests, we conduct ourselves in a way that enables us to act effectively under current and future governments. We do not make political statements or engage in political activity in relation to the functions of the company.

When acting in our private capacity, we avoid any political activity that could jeopardise our ability to perform our role or which could erode the public’s trust in the company. We discuss with the Chair any proposal to make political comment or to undertake any significant political activity.

Accusing the Leader of the Opposition for promoting a policy that “is a thin disguise for the dog-whistle on co-governance” is blatant political hackery, especially in an election year. Dr Verrall needs to act strongly to avoid any perception that Te Whatu Ora is a puppet of her Labour government.

At least Campbell has marked himself as someone an incoming government should terminate immediately, on the basis they have no confidence in him. The Code of Conduct requires him to act in a manner that “enables us to act effectively under current and future governments”.

        The interesting thing he knew that and yet he doubled down, perhaps he now sees the health thing will be a shambles and wants out.
        
        People have focused on the health job, but in some ways EPA chair is closer to 3 waters, and I assume even things like his chairmanship of Ara Ake (major government funded) will be hard to sustain.

    Can you just imagine the efforts hundreds of broccoli growers expend daily getting their products to markets? Don’t we think that the last thing they want is for customers to find their shop shelves empty of broccoli? Is it a safe assumption that when there is no broccoli available that circumstances must have been dire for that to have occurred and that it will be despite the growers and wholesalers best efforts? No one is more motivated than he or she who’s livelihood is on the line.
    
    And ivory tower academics and failed socialists think they have the remedy for no broccoli this week? How? What is their remedy? What will it cost? How will it resolve matters? How does that cost compare with just eliminating to the highest degree possible cost, burden and effort by growers to comply with unnecessary or inefficient regulatory compliance activities? And, just as importantly, what costly and wasteful unintended consequences and market distortions will result from this totally unnecessary government intervention?
    
    This is a disaster in the making. New Zealanders with any sense will do all they can to stop it, as they will be the ones who will pay.
    
    This government couldn’t organise a loss ip in a brewery – all around us we see the evidence of their incompetence whether it be health, schooling, infrastructure – the list just goes on and on. And they want us to think they will magically transform our food industry into a nirvana with the streets covered in milk and honey? Give me a break.
    
    Oh, and by the way, who the hell cares if there’s no broccoli in the shops this week? Just buy something else. And in the full knowledge and certainty that broccoli will be back next week just as good and as cheap as ever. Just like it always is.
    
    This whole thing is a solution looking for a problem. People with nothing better to do, inventing a crisis to give themselves tax-payer funded work to solve it. It’s a rort.

      Also, the price of tomatoes, lettuces and sweet corn seems to have dropped. There is no certainty in the market. What is going on ?

        Its the replacement that will take a LOT of time.
        
        If they *uck up the replacement then all land development STOPS… because there is not an answer to a question that needs to be answered for a resource consent application to be approved.
        
        If the rule says “ask this iwi group for comment” and that group no longer exists… you are stuck. Council will refuse (rightly) as you cant tick the box.

    I don’t know if you’ve seen the signs around the place Sideoiler, but they say “National will repeal AND REPLACE Three Waters”.
    
    Replacement has always been on the table. The status quo is not an option. National’s challenge was to come up with a solution which would allow councils and local communities to retain the ownership of their water assets, whilst providing a mechanism for substandard water infrastructure to be upgraded. The general feeling seems to be that by working closely with the 30-odd councils who formed Communities 4 Local Democracy, National has come up with a very sound model.

    A new government will have to follow the law of course, but ways and means. Maybe personnel contracts can be onsold / reassigned to a different entity, like a council just for laughs, but with extremely close scrutiny of contracted performance, outcomes and budgets.

Chatting with one of the neighbors earlier up at the dog park.
She was telling me one of her daughters friends used to work for Watercare.
What I did find a bit concerning, was she reckoned Aucklands water-meters are calibrated to read somewhere between 5 and 10 percent above the actual usage.
Now multiply that by every household in the city for both Incoming & Wastewater charges, it’s yuge!

When I just told my partner about it, he said he can’t understand why their Meters aren’t required to be checked and monitored on an annual basis by the Department-of-Trading-Standards.
The same as Petrol Pumps have to be before being issued with a ‘Certificate-of-Accuracy’

Not silly.

  Same as scales in the supermarket. Checking things like a 1kg block of cheese is 1kg. Packed meat weight is checked.
  If Auckland water meters are reading wrong it needs to be stopped.
  I guess if I tried to do that Watercare would trespass me. A few years ago the water meter was moved about 1 meter from my property to Council property. This will be one reason why. They also own the meter.

    A couple of years ago we queried our Watercare bill because it’s always about twice what our neighbors is.
    They suggested we should get someone to check for leaks – which we did but they found nothing.
    Next thing, Watercare informs us our meter was about 30 years old and suggested they should install a new one.
    Worst thing we ever f**ing did….now we’re paying nearly 3 times what our neighbors do 🙁

      ice has a stiffness of about 10gpa…. it is no where near as simple as it is floating or it is on land. Ice for about 10km out to see from the grounding line will be effected by the upward support of the glacier which is still sitting on land.
      
      Also because of the shape of the land underneath the glacier – the ice has to go over a rise in the landform – there is support to slow the flow of the glacier into the ocean. As the ice is eroded by the water and the grounding line moves inland and down that support diminishes, and the flow over the rise in the landform is lubricated by water, increasing the travel speed of the glacier from being supported by the land to being in the ocean displacing its own mass which is greater than the displacement it was causing when partially supported by land.
      
      It is proper science these teams are doing and if you actually go an read their reports you will see a lot of things being reported are not what the scientists are saying. See Surfings comment below, their work is being taken out of context and you are propagating it.

    Almost nothing in nature continues to progress at a constant rate.
    
    Most changes in nature are seasonal or in steps and waves.
    
    If you measured at the start and end of the tide coming in, then projected that into the future then One Tree Hill would be underwater by the end of the week.
    
    Watch Maggy Pie accelerating her Porsche from the traffic lights for 10 seconds and project that into the future. In 10 minutes she will be going twice the speed of sound.
    
    The end part of a glacier is typically already floating on the water and thus displacing water already. When it breaks off and melts there is very little change to the water level (ie. no difference to the ice melting in you glass).
    
    The only time it makes a difference is with the part of a glacier that is held up by land sliding out over the water.

Rest of the family to attend as usual.
School will remain open unless number of teachers with covid endangers staffing levels.

    Overall it would be nice if TVNZ openly declared their policy generally. It might read as follows:
    “(1) TVNZ has a mandatory requirement that each segment of programming/new presenter must be introduced and or say a sentence or two in the Maori language.(2) The word Aotearoa shall be used at least once in each segment/story even if it has to be inappropriately shoehorned in as is done in many advertisements. (3) Certain English words and phrases are completely banned from local programming eg good evening, hello, family, woman, children, country, work (not exhaustive). The reason we have chosen to ban these particular words/phrases is (?). The reason we have implemented this policy is because (?) and the reasons we believe why these steps will best achieve our desired policy outcome is (?)”

How do you great depth of opinion on any subject.
If both Labour and National say they are going to legislate to prevent ‘climate change’, where do any candidates with differing opinions go?
“Climate Change’ politics have become a one, and only one, view subject.
It is fine to say that dissenting voices will have their say at the Cabinet level, but how representative will they be – will there be any.
How does anyone wanting to access sites on the net that present both pro and anti arguments, even begin to find out where to start.
Too much of the net is about ‘over powering’ information by algorithm manipulation.
There must be wide ranging argument, and freedom of thought, in the debating chamber.

A Contagion of Cowardice

I titled this article a contagion of cowardice. It might be too severe to call it that. Many people went along for entirely rational reasons. Another point to consider is that moral teaching in the great religions has not typically required absolute heroism. What it does require is not doing evil. And those really are different things. Staying quiet might not be evil; it’s only the absence of being heroic. St. Thomas even writes this in his treatise on moral theology: the faith celebrates but never requires martyrdom.

And yet it is also true that heroism in our times is absolutely necessary for the preservation of civilization when it is so brutally under attack. If everyone chooses the safe path, and crafts one’s decisions around the principle of risk aversion, the bad guys truly do win. And where does this land and how far can we slide into the abyss under those conditions? The history of despotism and death by government reveal where this ends up.

The best case for heroism over careerism and cowardice is to look back over these three years and observe just how much difference a few can make when they are willing to stand up for truth even when there is a big price to be paid for doing so. Such people can change everything. This is because ideas are more powerful than armies and all the propaganda that a machinery of power can muster. One statement, one study, one sentence, one small effort to puncture the wall of lies can bring down the whole system.

And then the contagion of cowardice comes to be replaced by a contagion of truth. Those who stood up for that form of contagion deserve our respect and gratitude. They also deserve to survive and thrive in the new renaissance that so many today are working to build.

c) Building back public sector capacity. Consultants having a field day.
d) Restructuring financial fundamentals. Tax workgroup recommendations shelved.
e) Rebuilding Education. Successful Charter Schools canned, truancy rife. Curriculum and standards lowered.

So, where HAS all the money gone ?

Last chance to stop all this by voting National or Act in October.

  Let’s be generous and say it was $100 billion all on COVID. The opportunity cost analysis on that alone is mind-boggling. It’s about 75 years of Pharmac funding for life-saving drugs. Based on Pharmac’s own numbers, that’s about 2.4 million lives saved over the 75 years if it was spent by Pharmac. Just shows how absurd the entire COVID response was (and is).

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins says comments by the chair of Te Whatu Ora about a National Party policy were “inappropriate” for someone in his role.

He said at a press conference on Monday that Rob Campbell’s comments “fall well outside” of the code of conduct for board members of Crown entities.

Unlike David Garrett, I will miss Chester Borrows terribly. My wife and I regard he and Ella as friends, and are proud of that.

Chester and I didn’t always agree on issues, especially crime and justice, but we had enough respect for one another to agree to disagree. Up until I read David’s comment earlier, I would have said Chester was universally respected within Parliament, but I guess you can’t please everyone.

Chester was always supportive of us personally and professionally, and I was especially grateful for his support when Nicky Hager published THAT book, in which I had a bit part. He was loyal to a fault, and his advice was always appreciated and well received.

I send my most sincere condolences to Ella, to the Borrows whanau, and to his many friends and colleagues. I feel terribly sad that he and Ella did not get to enjoy retirement. Moe mai ra Chester.

A Christchurch private school has been criticised for banning headphones in class, but the move is in keeping with many other high schools across the city.

Christ’s College has told students they can no longer listen to music during lessons as it is too distracting and research showed it can be detrimental to learning.

What responsible Government would allow people to run up debts of over $20,000 knowing that they would never be able to pay back when the taxpayer is has worked hard and it’s their money that is the main contributor in tax to this fund.
