    Well on the assumption the decolonization means what it says, I expect in NZ it would be along the lines of…
    
    1) All non Maori leaving the country (not sure how you would define Maori and non Maori)
    
    2) All Businesses shut down, including Iwi owned
    
    3) All monies paid to IWI refunded
    
    4) All shools, hospitals and public services shut down
    
    5) All roading, electricity and piping removed
    
    6) All books and technology removed
    
    7) All housing buildozed
    
    As a starter
    
    Perhaps we should be focused on not identifying people by ethnicity and simply making sure all NZers have the best opportunities.

      Another take on recompense for 200 years of free intellectual property:
      New Zealand past history tells us Māori were virtually devoid of metal and any semblance of civilisation until the global intellectual property showed up in the early 1800’s.
      This was appropriated by Māori to their immediate benefit. It was freely shared, disseminated and advantaged by all Māori.
      Māori carried on the appropriation of global intellectual property of Western civilisation and used it for their own betterment for 180 years or more. A multi trillion USD value offset to this unbridled appropriation and usage of this global intellectual property must be offset against all Waitangi treaty settlements.
      New Zealanders have to make this massive theft a “poop everywhere” elephant on all Maori that inhabit this country.

        My maternal grandmother’s name was Nicholson. We hve cousins in Portland Oregon who were schoolteachers, and back in the 1960’s – ’70s used their school holidays to travel to England to sort the Nicholson anthology. Nicholson is Danish, and they traced back to 12 th.cenntury Cheshire.
        Maternal grandfather is Cornish, of Scottish descent – McDonald clan sent to Cornwall during th 16th.c. ? Clearances.
        Maternal grandmother is of Saxon stock, family moved to England around 15th.C.
        The Beckett name is Norman – early Becket’s came to England with William the Conqueror & settled in London and intermarried with the English. My ancestors until recently owned a brickworks on the Thames; a young pommie guy who worked for me in Rotorua served him time in London back in the 1960’s, and they bought their bricks from Beckett’s Bricks.
        At the risk of being a smart-arse, my wife is part (10%) Maori. My son did a DNA test, and all this is supported by the DNA, so my kids have an extra racial bit.

    Judging from media statements, Maori are saying everything that colonialism brought to NZ has been bad. Those that call themselves representatives and leaders in Maoridom have not had one good thing to say about the lives of Maori compared to pre colonial times.
    
    To then go to a uniquely Maori event, showcasing Maori culture, and go all swoony over Maori dressed in entirely European fabrics and styles is a hypocritical joke.
    
    If Maori were to take a leaf from the Vietnamese, where I recently travelled, and lived a life where the different cultures are actually merged together and lived, rather than torn apart and attacked, this country would be much better off.

    The culture we are being asked to recognise, as recently as 200 years ago, had no written language, engaged in cannibalism and slavery, had not invented the wheel, metal smelting or even basic pottery. They survived on violence, myth and legend, and had no concept of any basic sciences – mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology. I cannot fathom the arrogance of these tribal people who persist in the myth that their ‘culture’ is somewhat superior to global culture, and that it has been damaged by colonialism.

    The subsequent jaxx mandates were in large part enabled by those on the nominal right declaring the unjaxx to be mentally unsound and a range of other abuse. There was no political opposition to the jaxx roll out for everyone and mandatory naturally followed. Arden went with the flow.

        I realise there are reasons on both sides why a National Green coalition would be unpalatable to some but that needs to be balanced by hunger for power, position and money.   I have mixed feelings about this.
  
  Repeatedly, since Ardern is in office, we are told we can’t say anything about politicians families particularly kids. Any relationship difficulties or illegal behaviour of someone other than the politician is not fair game.
  
  We also give all youth and almost all adults name suppression in the media. Ram raiders are not named and the sentences are not reported.
  
  So now Ormsby’s estranged step kid gets into serious trouble with the law. And his whole life story is laid bare. Where is the consistency.
  
  The story is shocking because of how much offending there is, how dysfunctional his life, and how light the penalty. But this recidivist criminal behaviour goes on all the time in NZ . This story is shocking because it lays bare what is happening in our country. Ormsby’s kid is typical of a cross section of people in NZ. It is usually just not reported on.
  
  You’d think if you are estranged from your parents it would be even more reason he shouldn’t be dragged into the papers because of his dad.
  
  The media needs to be consistent. Are we reporting on youth offenders or not? Do we report ram raiders and thieves or not? Are we reporting on politicians kids or not?

      Fair enough. But most people do not have their names in the paper for their crimes in NZ. Regardless of age. Not due to some legal name suppression. But clearly the newspapers have decided to not publish them.
      
      If they are on video committing a crime the media blur the criminals and don’t name them. Most of the police requests for information now do not contain any detail of the person at large.

        The two cases you have posted are stories of people caught, they haven’t been before the court, he has and
        he was found guilty. But there are also cases where someone has be charged with a crime and their names are released. One case at the moment is the teenager murdered in Christchurch, they are going to trial in may, their names are in the media. Likewise the teenager who stabbed the Christchurch dog walker. Likewise one of the teenage rapists that got home detention.

  How about extending the Young Parent supervision scheme to those not managing their income, even as a couple of pilots. The scheme for teenage parents manages their outgoings and gives them pocket money. It carries responsibilities from both sides, including financial incentives for completing a budgeting course and enrolling children in ECE.
  
  Financial supervision would help some, not others of course. Those with low incomes and high debts may have other issues.

        National are making the right noises and have proven successful managers, ACT has some good policies but are lacking in managerial expertise. Plus you must remember very few of ACT’s policies will see the light of day.

  They discuss how the efficiencies of scale will not translate as well to Councils working on their own, as opposed to a singular purchaser of the works.
  
  Additionally there is concern on Simon Watts declaration on RNZ this morning that if Councils are not performing as the National government expects, then they should expect to be relieved of the burden and statutory managers placed in charge of it. That does not sound democratic.

    Tauranga is not getting its council back, with Minister for Local Government Nanaia Mahuta leaving commissioners in place for at least another two years. The dysfunctional council was sacked in December 2020, and commissioners were installed to run the fifth biggest city in the country.

      Labour has increased our National Debt from $50b to ~$150b in just 5 years. With the damage up north we will have to borrow even more. While you are right re China and the pacific. We have simply left ourselves with no choice.
      
      We are spending ~400m per year just in the pacific, that excludes our climate change obligations and other humanitarian work. Its a lot better than running a special Lotto and begging other countries for money. Apparently the CHCH earthquakes got around $95m, I doubt the floods would even get that much.

  Lets face it, Covid was a convenient cover for Labour to borrow heavily for other projects they promised but couldn’t afford.       Sorry I don’t know what that means. The “temporary” cut to fuel excise and RUC costs about $2 billion every 6 months. It the Government does not make up that shortfall somehow, there will be a $2 billion hole in transport funding every 6 months.
      
      This has noting to do with fuel prices. The 25 cents cut in fuel excise applies no matter what the fuel price.

I have believed for some time Boards and CEOs should sign an undated letter of resignation on appointment to be dated either if they transgress or on a change of Government as in the US. A new Government can either reappoint them or not. We cannot have the current situation where Boards and CEOs are either fan boys/girls of a current Government or opposed to them. This is a nonsense.

For the vehicles, solar panels, wind turbines we will need for carbon zero 4.5 billion tonnes of copper are needed. That’s about six times the total amount that humans have so far extracted from the Earth. The rock-to-metal ratio for copper is more than 500, so it would be necessary to dig up and refine more than 2.25 trillion tonnes of ore. If mining were to continue worldwide at the same rate as in 2019, 189 years would be required to produce the copper needed to build the demanded units.

The response might be just mine faster! But it takes twenty years for a new mine to be put into operation (largely due to permitting requirements), and fewer than one in ten discoveries turn out to be economic. And even if it were possible to mine faster, the amount of copper needed is five times more than the total amount known to exist.

For my sins I ended up watching 1 spews and Newshub coverage of the suggestion that debt from beneficiaries be wiped. The key bene interviewed in both stories was Apanui Koopu. With a name like that he has to be a Coastie.

Anyway NO-ONE asked how he came to be $19,000 in debt and WHY he couldn’t pay it back at $20 per week. He does seem to be the go to man for similar stories. RNZ did one on him in 2021.

  That’s Apanui Koopu’s description of what it’s like to be in debt to the Ministry of Social Development (MSD). Koopu owes almost $20,000 due to his relationship being considered “in the nature of marriage”, as MSD refers to it.

Here, I refer to Bob Campbell’s political rant against a political party and its leader when he is in a position that requires political neutrality.
Te MSM is advocating for their PM to call for an apology from Campbell, which IMO once said, means squat!
That said, firing Campbell is the only meaningful option available to Hipkins. Demanding an apology can only be seen as a sop to the Trade Union Movement and Andrew Little in particular.

  Chuck – Good luck, I’ve tried a few times and they wore me out. The capture runs throughout the system. Apparently all our systems.
  
  I had a friend try and take his local medical centre to court for discrimination. He has an official exemption for mask wearing. He was refused access to the building. He presented irrefutable evidence that masks do not work. They still refused to let him into the building through the front door.
  
  He appealed to the Human Rights legal team to get Legal Aid for his case. He is a pensioner. They turned him down. Not because his evidence wasn’t accurate, they ignored that completely issue completely. No, they said that because he eventually got treatment, even though they made him come in through a back door, he wasn’t discriminated against. The issue of mask effectiveness wasn’t even discussed by the Human Rights people.
  
  Imagine if that treatment refusal and back door entry had been due to his religion or colour? Not discrimination? What a joke.
  
  Ardern’s 2 tier society is still with us in many areas.

I recall this interview. This “climate striker” was advocating an end to air travel. Then under questioning she said she had recently flown to Fiji for a holiday. Of course the interviewer ridiculed her because she thoroughly deserved it.

Helen Mirren, portraying Golda Meir, Israel’s Prime Minister from 1969 to 1975 has stepped into a debate similar to the “black face” issue that came from White actors in heavy make-up portraying Black people.

Two years ago, a Jewish actress and comedian, Sarah Silverman, criticised casting non-Jewish characters in TV and films. She referred to the castings as “Jewface.”

The casting of non-Jewish Mirren as Golda Meir has again led to headllilnes about “Jewface” castings, reports the Israeli news agency JTA.

The premiere of the Golda Meir production was at the Berlin Film Festival. At a press conference, Mirren’s co-star, Lior Ashkenazi, stepped into answer a question.

“Let’s say that we’re making a movie about Jesus Christ. Who’s going to play him?” Ashkenazi asked, raising laughter from reporters.

The film’s director, Guy Nattiv, compared Mirren to an “aunt” figure who had the “Jewish chops to portray Golda.”

Mirren told the French news agency, AFP, that she has long held a connection to Israel and to Meir, especially after a stay on a kibbutz in 1967, not long after the Six-Day War, with a Jewish boyfriend.

Winston Peters: What happened to the $14 billion Covid recovery money?

In June 2020, when still in government, New Zealand First wrote to Minister of Finance Grant Robertson in response to his request for spending proposals, as part of a third tranche of Covid stimulus spending.

There was still unallocated $20 billion in what became a $74.1 billion Covid Response and Recovery Fund.
We urged the Minister of Finance to keep further spending tightly targeted to meet only the stimulatory demands of the economy, which we asked him to explain.
Six billion dollars of further Covid-related spending would be allocated out of the $20 billion. We had no issue with it because that spending focused on income relief payments, extending the wage subsidy, extra PPE, and other Covid-related health needs.

It was necessary spending.

We left office in October with $14 billion left in the Covid fund. We argued in our letter for prudent stewardship of public money in the event of a future shock.
Minister Robertson agreed and, in his public announcement, said the remaining $14 billion in the fund was being set aside for such a purpose. To quote the Minister, “The fund is not there to be used for any old project in the never-never.”

Now, Cyclone Gabrielle wreaked deadly havoc on people, property, and essential infrastructure.
So where is that $14 billion contingency fund set up to meet the fiscal demands of a future disaster? It’s been spent, contrary to what was agreed in Cabinet when it was set up.

National’s Christopher Luxon and Nicola Willis have narrowly trumped Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and Finance Minister Grant Robertson as the duo most trusted to run the economy, according to the latest Taxpayers’ Union Curia poll.

About 43% of respondents preferred the opposition leader and his deputy as the most trusted team to run the economy, compared to 39% for Hipkins and Robertson, while 18% were unsure, the February poll showed.

To be fair to labour it is only a school, it’s not as if students go to them any more under labour….

Almost three years after the project was flagged, the $21 million rebuild of Twizel’s school is still in the preliminary design phase, with a full blueprint not expected to be completed until the end of the year.

In July 2020, then Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced Twizel Area School, made from temporary materials more than 50 years ago, would have its relocatable classrooms replaced as part of the first wave of a 10-year redevelopment programme to upgrade New Zealand schools.

Design work for the Twizel project would kick off early 2021, Ardern said at the time.

However, on Tuesday, the Ministry of Education confirmed the project was in the “preliminary design phase with the full design expected to be completed at the end of this year’’.

It’s sad that victims of crime were downplayed by this government and their trolls

The police minister has conceded things “could have been done better” after Hawke’s Bay residents expressed their fears and concerns following an increase in crime in the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle.

One resident said people are so afraid they are arming themselves, claiming the local gun shop is selling out of guns.
