The Ombudman has published his decision on offshore seafarers and MIQ. They and the then Minister got it wrong. Vindication of a sort, including for some seafarer posters on this site.

I have formed the opinion that MBIE acted unreasonably in providing the advice that it did to the Minister in respect of offshore seafarers …. I also recommend that MBIE consider apologising to the complainants.

  What about those of us who had to give up lucrative contracts in the oil and gas industry, because we were not able to get home for our rostered time off, due to not having the security of isolation spots. Lost hundreds of thousands of $ personally and know of many others in the same boat.
  
  The government also l0st out on significant tax revenue from all of us – offshore earnings, which is exactly what our country needs. We don’t get richer selling houses to each other.

    I will never, never forget that I was locked out of my own country for nearly 10 months, while I was working overseas, earning forex, and paying taxes in NZ.
    
    I will never, never forget I could not support my wife when she lost her mother, I could not support my family when we lost our father.
    
    I will never, never forget being taxed by the New Zealand government while I was an illegal overstayer in the country where I was stuck, while I was forced into the humiliating lottery to try and get home.
    
    I will never, never forget I had to take the jab or I could never have come home (at the time), but all the while I was taxed (yes I know I already mentioned that).
    
    I will never, never forget that as the added insult to serious injury, when I did ‘win’ a place in the lottery, on arrival ‘home’ I was imprisoned without charge, trial or appeal, and then forced to pay for my prison.
    
    I am not forgetting that, ever.
    
    I hope to live long enough to be a witness at the NZ Peace Crimes Tribunal.

    MBIE – Steven Joyce’s favorite behemoth – reports to many ministers. I could guess this was a matter under the suzerainty of the minister of immigration, but I’m picking that after forty years of improving ‘accountability’ it would be impossible to sheet home the blame for a specific bad decision to any one minister or official.

      Your general point though, is sadly true. Most Ministers and govt agencies make sure that the structure of an organisation is as unaccountable as possible, even if this degrades the organisations performance. This is especially true under the current government. Labour have shuffled ministers around so rapidly few can be held accountable for any actions as it was always ‘under the previous minister’.

        Three separate things:
        1. A slow degradation of the concepts of ministerial responsibility over at least 45 years
        2. Reforms intended to make the public service more efficient and accountable since the mid-80s have produced the opposite effect.
        3. Restructuring (MBIE being a particularly infamous example) seldom leads to better results but creates an illusion of action.

        That’s because the wrong action is taken to the problem.
        
        Currently: Problem is that MBIE isn’t delivering.
        Solution: Restructure
        End result: Same people doing same or similar work with a new name, title, or team, ergo nothing changes.
        
        Should be: Problem is that MBIE isn’t delivering.
        Solution: Set a KPI that (e.g.) visas are processed within (e.g.) 10 working days
        End result: The battalion of managers set about making sure that this can be achieved, so that they meet their performance goals.

      Ir really doesn’t matter because:
      1/ said person is no longer the minister responsible so cannot be made to take any responsibility and;
      2/ the Ombudsman clearly states he has no jurisdiction over the minister so has only intimated MBIE apologise
      
      The clown show rolls on and this will be waved off as yesterdays news, just not something people need to worry about … they saved 80k lives dontcha know?

  Davidson isnt even original. Shes modelling herself on Lidia Thorpe an Australian Senator. Thorpe was recently kicked out of the Green Party for going too far even for them.
  I hope the Greens dont kick Davidson out and she continues her unhinged vile rants. Hopefully some Green supporters will dessert some will go to Labour but hopefully some wont bother to vote which will harm both the Greens and Labour.

Why Marama must apologise for her “Cis White Men” comment.

While it is true, according to government stats, that White men make up 48% of sexual assault perpertrators, The percentage of New Zealanders that are European is 70.2%

Compare that to Maori, who make up 16.5% of the population, but a staggering 30% of Sexual Assault perpertrators. (According to government stats.)

When the ‘prevention violence minister’ (sic) cant even understand basic stats, and displays outwardly rascist sentiment while ignoring or misrepresenting data that does not align with her ideology, then she is not only unfit to be a minister, but also an MP.

She needs to go.

      Any person driving/riding a vehicle who fails to stop at a pedestrian crossing when someone is on, or about to step onto the crossing on the same roadside as the vehicle is in the wrong.
      
      I will be very surprised if Police ever manage to locate the rider of the motorcycle.

        I believe that a vehicle that has passed the diamond painted on the road before a pedestrian steps onto the road, has right of way. Of course it does not give the motorist licence to run down an idiot pedestrian but there is a rule that is not understood, not taught and not observed.

        IMO, if the Police did their jobs and made some arrests in Albert Park on Saturday, they could save themselves a lot of work sifting through numerous video clips.
        Then, they could have used the video clips as evidence of offences.
        I think this is an afterthought by Police in order to cover their arses.

    It wasn’t “one woman”. Several women turned up wanting to speak, or just to hear what she had to say. Others might have done so but didn’t because they had been intimidated by media coverage and politicians’ determined assertions that what they had to say would not for a moment be listened to, let alone given thoughtful consideration.
    
    All were silenced through violence, actual and threatened.

  Many family violence programs in New Zealand explain that colonisation caused high rates of family violence being perpetrated by Maori men. It was the white colonisers who demonstrated to the previously peaceful Maori men that it is acceptable to bash your female partner. The only way to stop family violence in Maori families is to ‘decolonise’..

    about 30-50% of pre-colonial Maori died due to violence (typical numbers for neolithic semi-agrarian cultures in competition for resources). Arrival of europeans saw homicidal violence among Maori drop precipitously before end of 19th century.

    Colonisation 250-150 years ago did not make a Maori male in 2023 commit family violence. The Maori male made a decision as an individual person.
    If it was colonisation causing the family violence then why don’t we see ALL Maori men committing family violence? I know heaps of Maori men that have not, and never will commit any violence.

      Yes but the thesis from certain groups, one of which I linked to, is that Maori men did not engage in violence towards family members until colonisation. The only way to stop Maori family violence is to decolonise. Nothing else will work.
      
      Killing and eating enemies would be put in a category of legitimate violence.
      
      I am not agreeing with this view of the world. I am simply offering this popular thesis as a plausible explanation of the Minister’s view that ‘white men caused all violence, at least family violence.’
      
      Indeed the Minister is quite specific about how she will address family violence:

        Hard to do a thesis on history of Maori , when unlike most other cultures, they didn’t have a written language. Written language enables the good and bad history to be recorded and available to future generations.
        Passing stories down through generations allows misinterpretation, wilful misinforming and selective memories.
        Try telling a joke to your mates and then listening to them retelling it and their listeners retelling it.Then imagine what’s it like hundreds of years down the line

        If we accept that pre-colonial Maori family life was completely different, and that familial violence almost unknown, explain to me what it is about current society that prevents Maori from living their lives that way now?
        
        There is nothing that prevents Maori generally adopting that approach, and certainly nothing legislative that needs changing to facilitate it. Just do it.
        
        In fact many groups – Maori and non-Maori – do that already. Wide family networks, helping each other out, looking after children, it all already happens.

        Well WC, the oral history of my family tells me that Maori men used to beat the shit out of their women and children, the Grandmothers in the mid 1800’s reported that they (and their kids) had been given some fearful hidings by their men (and that’s before any Europeans landed permanently in NZ).     All just fashion accessories.

  I see those journalists who are aligned to Davidson quietly drop the ‘white’ from their articles, and praise Davidson for drawing attention to the fact that violence is mostly perpetrated by men.
  How can the Minister be effective in her portfolio when she ignores basic stats, and sees the problem through a racist lens ?
  She needs to go, and be replaced by someone who can do the job.

  I agree in some respects with Marama Davidson’s analysis of the causes/drivers of much violence and it is intertwined with power relationships.
  
  But what Ms Davidson has failed to realise is that as a Government Minister she is the one representing those with power. That she used her position to support a physically violent protest and denigrate an entire group of her fellow man indicates that she is unfit to represent the interests of all New Zealanders in her role as Minister for the Prevention of Family and Sexual Violence.

  Maori 16.5 percent do 30 percent of that crime
  therefore 1 percent do 1.818 of the crime
  so Maori offences may be 2.66 time that of European

      Maori want separate services, so they get two TV channels. They want separate radio, so they get 20 or more tribal radio stations.
      
      Then they want big slices of non-Maori channels and of State Radio NZ.
      
      And with tertiary education. They want their own system, so the State finances three wananga. But Maori are taking over universities and elevating traditional Maori “knowledge” with science and academic disciplines of the non-indigenous world.

  Convictions may not reflect actual violence levels, of course, if some people are better are avoiding reporting or conviction.
  
  But what I don’t get is this: if the Minister believes, on the evidence available to her, that “white cis men” are the perpetrators of most of the violence in this country, why is this the first the rest of us are hearing about it? Where are the culturally appropriate interventions and programs to address this? Why has her government done nothing for six years?
  
  And as for the argument that Maori men were taught domestic violence by white men – how could that be? First off, isn’t domestic violence usually hidden from people outside the home?
  
  Secondly, I don’t believe domestic violence occurs in the majority of white homes, or even Maori ones, so why did a minority of Maori men follow the example of a minority of white men while their fellow Maori followed the majority example?

      If you watched him during the racist’s rant yesterday at Question Time, he was looking up adoringly at her.   Those two things are true but miss the mark. You really need to compare the % of such crimes by white men compared with the % of white men in the population. That’s surely an *exact* comparison.
  
  The NZ male population is about 49.5% but a smaller % is white. It must be perhaps 40% considering 8% alone would be Maori men since Maori make up 16% of the pop. and half are men.
  
  So, unless you want to walk into a debate with your fly open, it seems NZ white men are offending above their average.
  
  But I haven’t had my coffee yet, so feel free to show otherwise. It’s too easy to get sideswiped by accidentally comparing apples and oranges.

        That was my original point and it is the truth. Disprove it.
        
        The fact that 8% of the population, Maori men, commit 28% of the sexual assaults, is a separate fact. That they offend at a higher rate is also a fact, but separate to my original statement.
        
        Both are true and one does not disprove the other.
        
        In short, although uttered in a racist and woke manner, and despite her vile nature, if Davidson is asserting that most sexual assault in NZ is carried out by white men, then she is factually correct.

      I’ve said white men must make up about 40% of the population (49.5% – ~8% Maori men – a few % more for Asian/Pasific Island = ~40%). If you disagree with that provide an analysis of what % white men are of the population.
      
      Failing that you’ve got no basis for saying my maths are wrong.
      
      And it’s the case that 48% of all sexual assaults are done by white men. Is that under challenge? If so, as a white man, I’m happy to see the evidence.
      
      Therefore the % of all sexual assaults done by white men, 48%, exceeds their % of the population, ~40%.
      
      Another way to say that is: while white men only make up 40% of the population they are responsible for 48% of all sexual assaults.
      
      Now which of the two figures there are you disputing?
      
      And just for the record, I don’t think I have to prove my credentials around here.         It would be logical to assume that the overwhelming majority of REPORTED sexual offending is carried out by men. While I do not doubt that women are responsible for some sexual offending, the reported incidence of this would be rather small.
        
        By your reckoning, Maori Males make up 6% of the population, yet 30% of the assaults.
        
        The proportionality aspect of my argument stands, a woman is 2.66 times more likely to be sexually assaulted by a Maori than a Non Maori. Which, when expressed in this way, sounds incredibly racist.

These are the people who tried to get Posie Parker banned from even speaking. You cannot compromise with such people. Their goal is simply to shut down liberal democracy. They oppose free speech. They oppose capitalism, because the market economy represents the freedom to choose.

National / ACT should name and shame extreme socialists, communists and Neo-Marxists in the Team of $55 Million. These fanatics should be held accountable for their views.

If it is decided that we need to keep the ‘Disinformation Project’ (I don’t think it should be kept), then it would need to be repurposed. The main focus would need to change, to identify and unmask the extreme left agitators in the media.         Steve, once upon a time, in a land called New Zealand, there was a state owned TV broadcaster (only), print media, a combination of public and private radio stations, and the New Zealand Press Association…..and guess what…?
        
        New Zealanders could be properly informed about matters in New Zealand and abroad. In those days (1980s), I had US colleagues who learnt more from the NZ media about what was going on in the US than they could from the US media.
        
        In the late 80s things changed. Sky & TV3 arrived. Journalists got lazy and relied on material fed to them by politicians (in particular one politician who is still about today), and corporate entities. Often what was published as news, was either “gotchas or PR releases. The media stopped giving us comprehensive news about what was happening or had happened in NZ & abroad. The NZPA was done away with, and media as a source to inform became a vehicle to advertise and sell.
        
        Hence we are where we are today, bought & paid for outlets for disinformation & click bait…

    I read the transcript of her live interview with Brendan O’Neill at Spiked. She said she isn’t famous and normally goes about her business and was astonished by the media and government hate she received in NZ and Australia. She mentioned the bizarre media reference to the blurred out hand signal.   National need to realise this and take the war to the enemy. All media subsidies stop overnight, all advertisements from government are slashed and must be signed off personally by the minister, Red Radio and TVNZ defended and told to get subscribers or go broke. Entire ministries can be axed, along with Meng Foon and friends who have a vested interest in creating trouble.

  2. Was so unaware (ignorant/arrogant probably both) that he breached the law and the cabinet manual in his conduct by:
  a) leaking cabinet decisions;
  b) leaked the cabinet decisions not just to anyone, but donors to his personal campaign, who happened to have business concerns regarding the matters discussed at cabinet, and duly leaked by Nash.

Great to see Christopher Luxon firing up a bit last night, calling for Stuart Nash to resign from Parliament straight away. He’s probably prepared top stump up for the cost of a by-election himself if it gets rid of Nash!

What’s more of a concern of course is that if Nash resigns after 14th April, Napier could be without an MP until October, at a time when the area really needs an MP. Fortunately Katie Nimon (Napier) and Catherine Wedd (Tukituki) are doing an outstanding job an ex-officio MP’s standing for election in the respective electorates in October. Hawke’s Bay friends tell me that the MP for Tukituki is missing in action, and Wedd is their go-to person if they want action.

  Labour voters will be thinking what the hell is he going to do next.
  Bear in mind his latest stunt goes back to 2020. There are more skeletons in the closet over the last 3 years.

      Nimon halved Nashes margin last election during one of the largest swing on election night for decades, if it was the election before Nimon probably would have won , she will win no matter who stands this time, polls showed Nats leading in Napier before Christmas, and when i was working in napier last week the chatter was all bad for Nash and Labour

        Mike – Libertarianism is the antithesis of the ideology of the Left. It relates to the primacy of the individual whereas the Left is all about the primacy of the group, usually run by a few “more equal” individuals. There is no Left Libertarianism.

    Brian Berletic at The New Atlas has done a detailed youtube post on this subject. He disagrees, in fact saying the opposite. The west are running out of ammunition and currently can’t match Russia’s productivity.

    I don’t know which is true, but results on the battlefield to date would support the Russian claims over the NATO claims.

        The US fell into a recession immediately after WW2 ended . The thinking had been that the war would go on for at least another year , fighting the Japs ( with huge losses to the Allies) as it happened the Japs collapsed unexpectedly , huge numbers of military came home to USA and were withoput jobs , while the arms industry would have collapsed.
        
        The fear post ’45 was Germany could have gone communist and eventually Truman was convinced to pump huge resources there ( and to many other countries , even non belligerents) to forestall the continent turning Red .
        
        Germans and Japs turned on an economic miracle post war so in that way could have been said to have won . Both countries are physically smaller though and now have their own unique major internal structural problems.
        
        In the immediate aftermath of the war I’d have said it was the Soviet Union and Stalin who won . Everyone was shit scared of him. In Korea European allies refused to back the Americans fully in the war there as they feared the Soviets would start another European war such was the mystique around their abilities then.
        
        It could be argued in the current context that it was the Chinese communists who won WW2 .

      The UK Daily Telegraph had an article on the lack of artillery and the fact that Macron is holding up production ( holding them all hostage basically) waiting for a decision that will ensure French production .

      Clan your comments about Russian tank production are not correct. Russia has one tank factory, which produces circa 200 tanks per annum. Many of the Russian tanks in use are older models, not the later T-90 model.
      
      Yes, Russia is a large economy (relative to NZ), but it is not much bigger than Australia and has endured sanctions of various kinds for the past 13 months, this has helped limit Putin’s capacity to wage war. Hence his Chinese weaponry.

        hullkiwi – I gave a link to an analyst who explains in detail how the numbers work. They claim 250 new modern tanks a year and the ability to upgrade 600 older models. This may not be true. I do not know for certain. I presented it as part of a discussion.
        
        All I am seeing currently is Ukraine being dismantled and destroyed and their youth being slaughtered. Many young Russians also being slaughtered. But no matter which source you go to for news, there is very little positive from the Ukrainian perspective.
        
        It’s rapidly looking like another Iraq/Afghanistan/Libya/Yugoslavia.
        
        Have you any links to support your comments, particularly re Chinese weaponry?

      My view is simple. There are only 3 likely outcomes to this mess that has Russia & NATO on the brink of all out war.
      1. Honour the Minsk Agreement immediately (look it up)
      2. NATO forces massively escalate and continue to threaten Russia, ultimately Russia’s only defense is nukes. If Russia is threatened then the hardliner Ruskies will takeover from Putin real fast and then we have a nightmare.
      3. Russia takes over Donbas etc and Ukraine forced into a peace deal (basically the Minsk Agreement + whatever Putin forces on them).
      
      Only option 1 results in fewer lives lost.
      
      Biden continually rejects peace negotiations (WHY FFS??). Russia has more nukes than the USA and they are as sophisticated or even bigger than what NATO has. Why risk the Russian hardliners taking over and pushing red buttons all of a sudden?? Madness….!!

  It’s amazing how slow the west has been reacting to this clearly signalled shortage which has been clearly coming for 6 months. There seems to be something like 1000/day production capacity in USA+Korea+Europe, but Ukraine has need for up to 10000/day. Moves are underway to ramp up, but seems silly to be planning for large scale production in 2024-25 when war is likely to be over by then. This is likely to be the last conventional war we ever see due to improving drone tech.

      Firstly ramping up production on the Wests side will happen – its profitable and it will mean using up stockpiles that need replenishment… and once that production capacity expands then Russia is screwed even if the Chinese back them with weapons from their factories.
      
      Secondly, Ukrainians survived the Germans by going to guerilla warfare. If Putin thinks he will win by rolling over the country he will have another thing coming. Supplying a guerilla insurgency in Ukraine if Russia wins will be like Afghanistan all over again… the US will love the slow bleed potential…
      
      Thirdly, Russia is being bleed – their manpower is limited as the creation penal battalions demonstrates. Eventually enough Russia young men die that Putin will have to backdown or he will be removed

      The Ukrainians have said they need more ammunition to conduct an offensive. That is probably true. An offensive operation needs at least three times more ammunition than a defence.
      
      Russia is also running out of ammo at current expenditure rates.
      
      For the last six months the frontline has been relatively stable. Neither side can break through. The gains are measured by the meter rather than the kilometre.
      
      In short, neither side is currently capable of mounting a major offensive. You need to ask the question, who is more likely to be able to do so in the coming spring and summer. Who will have the right numbers of well trained people will the most capable equipment?

        I’ve read that the Russians aren’t interested in taking ground so much as destroying the Ukrainian military infrastructure, manpower and capabilities. That they are happy with the way things are unfolding. Again, I have no way of knowing if that is accurate or not. But it seems plausible.
        
        As for what happens in Spring, who would know? Certainly not us. I know that German and UK MBTs are arriving, but those operating this equipment have only been training on them for a few months. Will they make any difference to the war? How are they going to maintain them?
        
        The Russians have many trained operators on the T 90 and all variants of it. They are closer to their supply lines etc. Time will tell.
        
        I wish it was over. We’ll see what happens eventually, but it was an avoidable tragedy.

  Think of the Dollars, Euros, and Pounds that will bring into circulation.
  Maybe a few countries will be able to pay their National debts but I’m not convinced they will. The US for example will filter a lot of that money into the Biden re-election fund and Britain will most likely refinance their NHS and ……..

What a disappointment Chris Luxon is. In response to my email regarding the Kellie- Jay protests Mr Luxon’s office makes it clear that his and National’s priorities lie primarily with celebrating and supporting diversity in NZ as represented by the so- called ‘rainbow community’- by which he presumably means the mob of vicious misogynist folk who attempted to cause physical harm to Mrs Keen at Albert Park.

In contrast Mr Luxon tells me that he and National do not support the views of Mrs Keen and the Speak Up For Women’s campaign on the rights of biological women: that a person born a man dies a man, and that women should have safe spaces in such places as public bathrooms and women’s prisons separated from people with penises.

Can I assure Mr Luxon that the concept of a ‘rainbow community’ is a fake one. This alleged community is not some sort of Kumbaya singing band of loving folk radiating kindness to all and sundry. The real face of this hard left ‘community’ was on display for all to see at Albert Park. An out of control, vicious mob, a mob baying for blood, a mob that will never support National and Mr Luxon, and which in no way represents the bulk of gay people of all political stripes who just want to get on with their lives quietly in peace- and which very much know the difference between biogical men and women.

      It makes my blood boil when I see the signs “Trans women are real women”. It begs the question of what ‘real’ means? This is why the issue has become so decisive. If “woman” does not mean “adult human female” we can all have our own definitions of what is “a woman”.
      
      My personal view is that a ‘trans woman’ is a ‘trans woman’. Taking estrogen and surgically replacing male genitals with a ‘neovagina’ does not a woman make.
      
      Further, you can’t mask sexual attraction with trans dogma. If trans women were ‘real women’ you would expect many straight men to happily explore sexual relationships with trans women. The actual numbers of men who would consider a sexual relationship with a trans woman are tiny. Less than 3 percent.

        So-called ‘grand coalitions‘ typically only happen in times of national emergency, eg world wars. How ever the definition of a ‘grand coalition’ is “an arrangement in a multi-party parliamentary system in which the two largest political parties of opposing political ideologies unite in a coalition government”. Emphasis mine. I must admit, I like Mr Hipkins. He seems like a decent person.

I admire that Mr Hipkins had the bottle to turn up to the interview with Mr Hosking. He also attempted to answer the questions, in a straight way. The interview was a train crash, but it is clear that Mr Hipkins is trying his best.

Of course, sadly, I know that Mr Hipkins is completely incompetent.

Nonetheless, I find Mr Hipkins refreshing, after being tortured by Cindy Ardern for what seemed like a lifetime. At least he is fairly straight, open and honest – at least compared to Cindy Ardern.

It is a shame that Cindy Ardern won’t be held accountable for her tyrannical policies at the next election.

I suppose that Cindy Ardern can be satisfied that her legacy of fermenting social division, economic collapse and instituting democratic vandalism will linger like a bad smell over the country for decades.

Yes Chippie cant make Nash quit but he can ‘put the ball in his court’. Its clear Nash wont be standing for Labour next election now. I think it is mistake to not give him the boot.   It’s quite possible, in fact it’s more likely than not, that the same person with the same qualities will be good at one job and not at the other. A good Minister is almost bound to be a bad constituency MP, and vice versa, precisely because the requirements to do the job well are so often incompatible.
  
  Having people be Cabinet Ministers and constituency MPs at the same time is actually absurd, when you think about it.
  Why should the voters of Wellington East get the full time attention of a constituency MP (Paul Eagle) when the voters of Wellington Central get only what Grant Robertson’s able to do outside his work as Minister of Finance? Alternatively put, why is Paul getting a full time salary for doing a job which Grant is apparently able to do in his spare time?
  
  It’s a similar dilemma to the point that the qualities which make for a good Minister are often very different to, if not totally incompatible with, the qualities which make for a strong electoral candidate.
  
  The List MP system often gets stick round here, but it is one approach with the potential to address both of these issues.

    On the assumption that, by the “List MP” system, you are referring to List MPs under MMP (rather than suggesting MMP should be replaced by the Party List system, i.e., all MPs would be List MPs, as in Israel), then I would suggest the system you are looking for is PR/STV in large multi-member electorates – with a ballot paper designed to facilitate voting in such electorates (see https://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2021/10/an_electoral_review.html/comment-page-1#comment-3039768 for a brief description).
    
    Under such a system, both National and Labour would have three or four directly-elected MPs in an enlarged Wellington area electorate. Right now, Grant Robertson, Ayesha Verrall and Barbara Edmonds would be concentrating on their portfolios, while Paul Eagle, Greg O’Connor and Ibrahim Omer would be concentrating on constituency work (bearing in mind that constituents would also have National MPs and at least one Green MP to approach).
    
    In my view, STV (whereby all MPs would have the same status, because they would all have attained the final quota), is far superior to MMP where we have two classes of MPs.

Stuart Nash broke Cabinet confidentiality a nd ‘collective responsibility’ rules by sharing detailed Cabinet discussions with his donors. He tried to push through a policy on rentals that was financially beneficial to his donors, then when he lost, he told the donors details of the discussion, and who opposed him.
He then drafted another piece of legislation, and sent it to a NZ First MP to support, then copied his donors again.
According to Stuff’s Luke Malpass, Nash was not ‘trying to get some personal advantage from something – there is no evidence that he was.’
Well I’m sorry but there is clear evidence he was providing his donors with inside knowledge of Cabinet discussions, and sending them draft legislation for their approval.
It’s hard to imagine any stronger evidence of obtaining personal advantage from his Ministerial position.

I haven’t heard of Brian Edwards for a while but he would be mortified to hear the sloppy and biased prose of our news reporters and news readers. He always used to say that objectivity and accuracy were important but the current press certainly don’t live up to his high standards. Putting aside the ” Marama Davidson was run over by a motorcycle” report which is patently a lie, I was incensed at the report on the death of the last member of the Dambusters squadron, pilot Arthur Joplin, on Newshub last night.

They managed to mention that he crashed, two of his crew were killed and he gave up flying. Didn’t manage to mention why he crashed( the airfield was not lit for landing and there was no visibility), and that he broke both his legs. The Herald at least had it correct.

That’s enough rant for now. I am sure something else will rile me by the end of the day apart from Marama.

It’s obvious the Minister for the Prevention of Family and Sexual Violence, Marama Davidson knows little of her “brown cis men” (tangata Maori ancestors) when she proudly declared on camera: “I am the prevention [of] violence Minister, and I know who causes violence in the world, and it’s white cis men.”
Between 1820 and 1840 her “brown cis men” (tangata Maori ancestors, Hongi Hika, Te Wherowhero and Te Rauparaha) slaughtered or took as slaves over half of her tangata Maori ancestors (men, women and children) for the fun of it and the feasts that followed. Some of the Taranaki who had fled from the Waikato invaded the Chatham Islands in 1835 and slaughtered thousands of the peace loving Moriori or farmed them “like swine” into virtual extinction and she’s got the “bloody” cheek to say “white sic men” cause the violence!
She must not be allowed to get away with this. It was the “white cis men” who saved her tangata Maori ancestors from total extinction.

  I suspect that the Minister would say that she meant that white men cause all ‘family violence’. She was not referring to warfare. It is clear from her announcement of her family violence strategy (see my link in my previous comment) that she believes that white colonisers made Maori men violent towards their partners and children, and that this did not happen pre-colonisation.
  
  Her approach to family violence prevention is called ‘Te Aorerekura’ and “intergenerational journey towards wellbeing.”

    What I find so disappointing in this Minister (and this Government) is her limited understanding of why and how violence can manifest.
    
    I know of a number of families in which violence arose because one of the family members descended into mental illness (through a brain tumour; as a result of increasing dementia) and know of other families with a mentally disabled child who occasionally/often inflicts harm on others.
    
    Our Government’s support for families coping with violent, mentally challenged members is appalling.

We invented a lot of stuff 10-12 years ago:
All Blacks in desperate need of innovation: Rugby Pass.
Another sign of the potential problems with centralisation.
Often a brief period of improvement, sparked by the change, before ‘group think’ sets in.
Everybody starts acting along similar lines.
A reason for serious debate before 3 Waters replaces local council input.
Even wrong ideas result in discussion and deeper thought about actions.

Marama Davidson’s words were –
“I know who causes violence in the world, it is white cis men. That is white cis men who cause violence in the world.”

Then she offers –
“I have clarified what I intended to say and particularly affirm and acknowledge victims and survivors who may not have seen themselves in my comments and wanted to make sure I affirm their experiences,” Davidson said.
– which is an “inclusive” extension of what she said, but not a clarification or correction of the original statement.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has said she apologised to him privately, but National’s Christopher Luxon wants a public apology “to the people that she caused offence to”
So in that respect she must admit a mistake to be apologising to Hipkins, but refuses to correct any of her comments publicly.

But now, apparently no longer suffering the shock from the motorcycle accident, she publicly maintains her original statement – for which she has apologised to the Prime Minister

  These days politicians, particularly those on the left, are given considerable latitude in their use of language. The only senior MPs who always speak, in English, with absolute clarity, are David Seymour and Brooke van Velden. That is why I enjoy listening to them. For the same reason, I enjoy listening to Jordan Peterson and Richard Dawkins. They speak and write with precision.

In response to Paul L’s very thoughtful post on Transgenderism yesterday. It’s so much more than just a bathroom or a prison cell. There are huge impacts for women and for society and medical ethical issues that should be debated.

This video is really interesting. A female intellectual who works in the tech space talking about the Trans movement and how it went from men who cross dressed , and how that changed as medical technical industries developed the technology to start to turn men into women. She talks about the tech that is coming down the line eg. transplanting wombs . She talks about the history, the power players, the changes in language and law, the changing of the word woman in the cambridge dictionary, the ethics, and the funders of the movement.

Nash committed several sackable offences under Ardern.
This goes to her culture of riding roughshod over the law and acting like a dictator. Think of all the court cases overturning unlawful action of Ardern’s government.

Did she know of Nash’s actions?

A serial Auckland sex offender who previously pleaded guilty to charges against six victims has been convicted of breaching his home detention conditions.

The man, who was sentenced to home detention and supervision for the attacks last year, appeared in the Auckland District Court today over the breach.

A court registrar confirmed to the Herald the man pleaded guilty and was convicted and discharged by Judge Kate Davenport.

PM Chris Hipkins said he had asked the Cabinet press secretary to conduct a review of correspondence between Stuart Nash and his donors.

He said the review would take about two months and it would look at communications from Nash to all donors declared in his election returns.

“Stuart has advised me he will fully cooperate with that review.”

He said he had been advised the email in question had been included in consultation over an OIA request in 2020 but was deemed to be out of scope.

He said the email was considered in the wider material around the request, but was not included in what was released. It had not been flagged with then PM Jacinda Ardern.

“I have made it very clear to my office that I expect to be advised of any such matters should they arrive.

“I have made it very clear I expect to be alerted of any such communications in the future.”

Asked if the email was covered up, he said neither the PM nor her chief of staff was made aware of it in 2020.

Hipkins would not comment on what Nash had decided for his own future, saying that was for Nash to announce himself.

  Today we went to St Spuke’s because I knew they have a book shop.
  Prior to that we went into the depths of Mt Eden to find my wife’s niece’s apartment. Next week they’re going to get together to make Thai sausages, talk about ghosts, the price of som tum back home and who to vote for in the coming Thai elections. There’s about twenty or more parties to chose from with few lasting more than five to ten years or so.

    Good question- although you assume its worse, not so sure about that. Look at the nutters in Extinction Rebellion and what they are prepared to do.
    Research is coming through that excessive use of Social Media is creating mental health issues and that girls are being more badly affected than boys.
    I read quite a bit about this recently.
    Ill try and find it.
    It was disturbing that (iirc) 42% of teenage girls reportedly had problems. They do tend to be on soc med more than the boys.

Doesn’t Marama Davidson’s (revised) statement that Cis Men are responsible for violence actually underline the importance of women’s safe spaces and show that regardless of a biological male’s intentions, it’s entirely reasonable for women to feel unsafe in their presence, especially while vulnerable?

How that biological male identifies is entirely irrelevant to how the woman feels about them being a threat.

  Yes quite correct. There are other scenarios where just accepting any man as self identifying as a woman is problematic.
  
  A prison guard or police officer. A trans woman officer could be assigned to perform intimate body searches on women.
  
  How about nurses and health workers? Let’s say your elderly disabled mum needs help bathing. A female nurse comes daily to help out. Suddenly a trans woman nurse shows up. Complete with male genitals. Are you happy for this person to look after your mum? If you object you will be shouted down as transphobic.

Can anyone explain to me why in my 50 years I’ve never seen published calls for taxpayer-funded dedicated Chinese housing be built in NZ and various Chinese-dedicated social services? Nor Indian. Nor Japanese, nor Welsh, nor Filipino, nor Korean, nor anything specific for Yorkshiremen.

I note too this report asks that the Labour Party uses the power of the state to compel NZ business owners to raise the minimum wage paid for employment to new ‘living wage’ levels and totally irrespective of the damage that would cause to businesses and the wider economy.

If it was up to me if would be unlawful for politicians to have this power. They just constantly abuse it for their own political purposes. The fact that they do have this power is just insane. It has been a huge mistake.

  Auckland Transport has the traffic lights on super short phasing at the lights near my office, allowing only 1 car to go through at a time which can result in a lengthy wait when the queue is 20+ cars long. So I had lots of time to observe striking teachers at the intersection this morning.
  Scruffily dressed, a couple of older women and one older man waving signs very unenthusiastically, and a young man standing there doing nothing except occasionally shuffling his feet. Presumably those that bothered to turn up were the most dedicated of the lot. Not an inspiring bunch at all.

The problem with this is that Police do not go to the District Court to get warrants for arrest. The Court only issues warrants for arrest for, for example, breaches of bail, failure to appear etc. where the warrant has been issued by a Judge or Registrar. So either Eli has created a false document or they have other charges presently before the court. And now they have fled to Australia, ostensibly because of death threats, but no doubt equally in an attempt to evade justice. It speaks volumes for the depth of conviction and strength of belief. Will they now seek refugee status in Australia?
