When you have been a mountain – a bloody great pile of rocks – sitting there for about 130 millennia and you last spoke around 1790, give a year or two or so – to allow those in charge of your handicap (tetraplegic immobility) needs as to what may clothe your lower sides and foothills, just one day to digest a 150-page report and give feedback, seems a little rich.

This may indeed be a second form of colonisation: literally, stone and rock-age beliefs supplanted [sic] by the newer climate change religion – although change does seem to come and go, when you are a mountain.

    “begs the question” means assumes the truth of the conclusion without support. A logical fallacy.
    
    “raises the question” is what most people really mean when they use it. Sadly the original meaning is being corrupted by common usage and lost. Like literally.

      That’s one meaning, and while technically correct, the way it was used by peterwn is also correct.
      
      “In informal, everyday use, beg the question means “to raise a fairly obvious but still unanswered question.” If your neighbor got hit by lightning on the roof of their house, it would beg the question: what were they doing on the roof in a thunderstorm? Though it’s best avoided in formal contexts, this usage is the more common one.”
      
      I’m sorry, but if I have to put up with such nonsense as “undoubtably” instead of “undoubtedly” and “case and point” instead of “case in point” then you’re going to have to wear this one 🙂

Jacinda Ardern our Former Prime Minister continues her lies with the help of our corrupt media yesterday with the headline Jacinda Ardern hoped resignation would take ‘ heat out’ of viral directed at Government.
Jacinda Ardern also went on to defend her record on reducing Child Poverty, saying her Government started the work that would be continued by future Leaders. I believe we did all we could do she said.
“The job was never going to be done in five years, but I believe we made a stepchange”.
Asked about Co Governance and why she had not spent time explaining it, she disagrees and said she had “why be afraid of having Maori at the table?”. “Why be afraid of that. That for me was the starting point.
She forget the damage that has been done by her and the continued lies .

  For my sins I just read the article in the NZH by Adam Pearce on Ardern’s interviews with TV1 & 3 last night. One piece clearly shows how dishonest the woman is, that being:
  Asked about co-governance and why she had not herself spent time explaining it, she disagreed and said she had.
  “Why be afraid of having Māori at the table?” she told 1News.
  “Why be afraid of that. That for me was the starting point.
  “We took on some hard debates and discussions, I am proud that we did because we will grow as a nation.”

    Typical and instructive that she couches the co-governance debate in negative emotional terms (i.e. “afraid of Maori”), rather than in terms of any positive rational case that can be objectively assessed, preferably a legal/constitutional justification, but at least a utilitarian one.

      No-one is afraid of having Maori at the table. That’s why ordinary New Zealanders vote for them in general electorates as Members of Parliament and for local government.
      
      But everyone not born into the elite is afraid of hereditary rulership. We have learnt through long-suffering that it is never in our interests.

  I know that we often give ex ministers cushy roles on boards or as ambassadors but this is just a step too far. We have apparently made a whole new role that means JA can travel around the world at our expense and earn a nice salary without actually needing to do anything. Disestablishing this nothing role should be the very first action of a new government. Disgusting.

        We must ask why there would need to be ANY travel when considering the Christchurch Call.
        Since the definition is : “Christchurch Call To Eliminate Terrorist and Violent Extremist Content Online (15 May 2019)” . With current technology any and all matters can be handled economically online. This made up role is a confirmation that job offers were thin on the ground for the SLG when she jumped ship. Ok don’t laugh as the majority opinion is she got the push. Only wish she would show some dignity and settle silently somewhere well out of sight.

      Hmm well some would argue he was in the wrong party.
      
      In my book he was a better PM than JA in that he actually did manage to build his projects (Marsdon point, Clyde dam etc). He took a lot of flack for his think big projects but they actually more than paid for themselves over the years. What physical project has Jacinda created that we will look back on in that way?

      Lange Douglas saved the economy so well that the mother of all budgets was required to save the country from complete collapse and they lied to the public about how bad things really were before the election.
      They introduced some badly needed reforms but wrecked the economy because they were a labour government.

      Agree re Clark / Cullen. Sensible financial management but sabotaged the incomming govt on the way out.
      
      Lange/Douglas. Douglas was the ‘brains’ and did all the heavy lifting. He was in the wrong party as evidenced by his future in politics. Lange was a hugely popular leader and quite charasmatic (for some reason). Langes baby was the Nuclear free stance, that was incredibly popular and well supported. Long term is cost nz Anzus and has set us up for failure now as we struggle to overcome a fear of nuclear energy. He certainly achieved much more than JA.

  Ardern has a new specially arranged job, from Chippy, whereby she is able to travel the World at our expense trying to get a job and extolling her virtue (read toxicity).
  Something to do with the massacre in Christchurch.
  This other new role appears to do with some Charity to which Prince William is involved, and I assume she will attend the meetings, talk, talk talk, and our financial contribution will given to some overseas charity showing how wonderful she is, and how we misunderstood her.

  What the hell has she done since becoming a backbencher???? On full pay doing nada – I hissed when I heard today it is her last day and she will present her valedictory speech …. Rather I imagine she will flutter into the chamber wearing angel wings, tilty head, frown, sad eyes with another pity me speech – I don’t know much about questions and supplementaries but I hoped she gets nailed by the opposition today

    What the hell did she do as a backbencher before the carefully crafted campaign in womens’ magazines paid off and landed her the job “she wasn’t interested in” (I think that was probably the first of her lies as PM).?
    
    Every single one of her members “bills” were barely more than bumper stickers, so the talent for announcement over actual substance and delivery was also well-signalled in advance of her Government years.

Apropos of this story, what’s missing is why Mani Dunlop did not get the Morning Report gig. It will absolutely not be because she is Maori. Kiri Allen will know that RNZ will crawl over broken glass to burnish their Woke credentials.

I assume it’s because of the conflict of interest in having a political presenter living with a Minister of the Crown. The fact that this is not top of mind for Allen illustrates her primacy of family interests over the public interest, I think.

Note the use of family instead of whanau by Allen. Labour toning down the te reo ahead of the election, perhaps?

    There isn’t the antipathy among MP’s towards MP’s of other parties that people here seem to imagine. There are exceptions, but that is invariably related to their personal characteristics rather than their political orientation.

      Really? Jacinda Ardern led a Government that has caused immense damage to the country. She designed policies that have wrecked the lives of many people. There should be antipathy towards her.

        I get diplomacy and parliamentary niceness. I really do. But my objection to Wayne Mapp’s view of the world is that he makes Parliament sound like a ‘club’ with a red team and a blue team.
        
        This is not about antipathy towards Jacinda Ardern because of her political orientation. She deserves derision because of what she DID. By any objective measure she was a terrible PM who did immense damage to the country. It just does not sit well with me that MPs who know this to be true give her a standing ovation.

        No, I didn’t mean that it is little more than a club with alternating teams.
        Rather it reflects that you actually have to get on with people of other parties to get things done. Both in Select Committees and in the Debating Chamber.
        Because you see your opponents just about every day, common civility is an essential part of making democracy work.
        Any effective democracy requires both sides to work together to make the system work. You can’t do what you and Keith White imagine and still have an effective democracy. I have been to a number of countries where parliamentarians and legislators act exactly like that. They are barely functioning democracies, with boycotts, walkouts, arrests of opponents and so forth. Not a path to go down, which the US seems to be currently moving down.
        I would also point out that the Leaders of the major parties have to consult each other from time to time. Especially on matters of security, critical foreign policy decisions (Ukraine) and in providing consent to emergency legislation such as the Christchurch earthquake and the recent cyclone. Also the response to Covid, especially in the first twelve months. Which as I recall, you supported. Yes, the lockdowns went on too long, especially in Auckland where I live.
        In short to be a responsible Leader of a major party that wants a credible role in government requires a certain level of trust and the ability to put partisanship aside in appropriate circumstances.
        So no, I don’t agree with your view as to how Jacinda Ardern should be treated today. To do so would seriously degrade our democracy.

        I had more than once been grabbed and shoved against a wall by male teachers at my high school, and I am not going to say I didn’t deserve it. This was long after corporal punishment and they could have gotten in deep trouble.
        But in those days, no smart phones and no ‘wah wah’ victim exaltation. A short sharp shock is exactly what some people need.
        
        So if some useless & lazy students get told that they are useless and lazy, good job. You certainly can live outside of school by being lazy and entitled, but you actually need to strive and aspire to get ahead and not just suckle on the government teat.
        Honestly, the teacher transcript sounds like some of the conversations I (occasionally) feel compelled to have between me and my son 😉

When he flashed back to her becoming leader and her bold statements about ridding NZ of child poverty, providing houses to all and climate change being her nuclear free moment he asked “did you achieve those things”.

She said categorically “yes”. She is a pathological liar and JC just lapped it up with fawning eyes. If he was a proper journalist he would have cut her to bits with all the statistics publicly available about complete non delivery.

The left are also busy making claims that’s she’s a saint because she’s going to these two new “causes” and not being paid. Someone needs to chase down the money trail as someone is funding her and a lot.

But that was in full accordance and pursuit of the US and EU’s agreed policies, and was because that particular prosecutor wasn’t doing his job (prosecuting corruption). There is no evidence, or even a serious suggestion, that Biden personally benefited from that decision.
        
        Ukraine’s history over the last 15 years has basically been a long arc of getting rid of Russian-aligned politicians, bureaucrats and oligarchs.     Just since Jan 1st, Alvin Bragg has reduced 52% of felony cases to misdemeanors. Between 2013 and 2020, his predecessors, also keen to reduce where possible, never went higher than 40%. He’s clearly no fan of felony charges, yet is desperately trying to pin one on Trump. Sounds like a vendetta, doesn’t it?
    
    He entered office declaring that he would prosecute Trump, admitting his aim isn’t to see the possibility of a crime and seek justice, but see a political target and do whatever he can to get him.
    
    Then there is the fact it’s in deep blue Manhattan and it’s Trump. Finding a untainted jury pool will be damn near impossible,
    
    This is the kind of thing you’d see in some unstable authoritarian country. Imagine you heard that a Labour lackey was saying “We don’t know that Luxon has committed a crime, but we will do whatever it takes to get him on one”, then you find out its built on the witness testimony of a guy already convicted for perjury and another who has changed her claims repeatedly, depending on whether she will get a payout or a fine.
    
    You’d think the entire political system in NZ has collapsed and the effects on the future of NZ politics would be catastrophic. You definitely wouldn’t be thinking “Well, if Luxon’s committed a crime, then no one should complain.” You’d think “They could find and get him on breaking the law, whether he actually broke the law or not.”

      (a) yes he would because “arresting” Trump is worth it.
      (b) they have done this

      The statute of limitations for this “misdemeanor” is a couple of years. However, they are claiming that it was used to cover up a “felony” (that he was not charged over and that the alleged “cover up” didn’t stop them from investigating) and that therefore this should be treated as a felony (even though he wasn’t convicted of the “felony”) and the felony statute of limitations should be used instead.
      
      The upgrading of the misdemeanor to a felony like this isn’t actually tested in court (because it’s unequal treatment – it hasn’t been done before) but it’s a crazy position to take because to justify upgrading the misdemeanor to a felony, the thing covered up has to be a crime. This has not been proven in court so they have effectively convicted him of that felony without trial (just no penalties have been applied).
      
      Note that it’s actually quite likely that the jury will convict and he will miss out on the election while waiting for his appeal. The timing works very well for the Democrats in that respect.
      
      Sadly, this kind of thing does happen. Remember the Cardinal Pell case in Australia where the Supreme Court threw it out and didn’t let it go back to the State Court which would have been the usual result because their objectivity and reasoning were so tainted? How about the DC FISA warrant case where the guy was let off by the jury despite admitting he did it in court?
      
      You have way too much faith in the US justice system.

        I have enough faith in the transparency of the US justice system that if a verdict is clearly wrong on the evidence then that will be apparent.
        
        Personally I doubt that Trump will do any time for these Manhattan charges, even if found guilty. Probably a fine. Possibly a ban from doing business in New York.
        
        But politically this and the other charges likely coming down the pipe will torpedo his Presidential ambitions. Sure, the rabid Trump supporters (you know who you are) will still fawn over poor persecuted Donald.         Basically, the indictment doesn’t technically need to include the crime that he was covering up and because it’s not there the judge couldn’t rule on it and had to let it go to trial. Obviously incredibly unethical from Bragg but not really a surprise.
        This allows the case to go forward right when Trump’s running for the GOP Primary.

        It clearly lays out how these charges fit within New York law. Some key quotes, for those who won’t read the article:
        
        “Mr. Trump […] is the 30th defendant to be indicted on false records charges by Mr. Bragg since he took office just over a year ago, with the D.A. bringing 151 counts under the statute so far. ”
        
        “New York prosecutors regularly charge felony violations of the books and records statute — and win convictions — when the crimes covered up were campaign finance violations, resulting in false entries in business records to conceal criminal activity.” [Then lists 3 recent cases of this]
        
        “New York appellate courts have held in a long series of cases that intent to defraud includes circumstances in which a defendant acts “for the purpose of frustrating the state’s power” to “faithfully carry out its own law.” To the extent Mr. Trump was covering up campaign contributions that violated New York law, that seems to be exactly what he did.”
        
        Note that Trump has now been indicted, but trial is not till December. It’s quite likely additional charges will be added before that December trial. Full discovery now starts, and the DA now has the ability to compel information from the likes of David Pecker, and the ability to introduce conspiracy charges if Pecker doesn’t comply. This next phase (between indictment and trial) is when witnesses often turn, because they see the real risk of being dragged into the charges if they don’t.

      Trump is being charges under New York Penal Law § 175.10. The statute of limitations for this is 5 years. That’s the felony. The misdemeanor (175.05) is only 2 years. The most recent payment was December 2017. Time is up already for both.

      If justice isn’t your aim, then yes. There would be lots of reasons, depending on motivation. A few come to mind right now:
      
      1) Bragg swore to prosecute Trump the day he took office, before he even knew of anything that could bring a prosecution.
      
      2) he is a Soros funded DA. Soros could tell you “Bring a prosecution against Trump and I’ll make sure you have so much money, you’ll never lose another election again”.
      
      3) if we do this, and he isn’t convicted, it will guarantee that Trump is the GOP candidate. We don’t even have to worry about DeSantis. We’ve already beaten him before, so we can do it again.
      
      4) If the prosecution fails, we can blame the corrupt and broken justice system. The whole media will back us up on that. Bragg is guaranteed to win reelection.
      
      They really don’t have much to lose here. The corrupt political targeting wont matter. All Trump has to do in response is make some exaggerated comment and the whole media, and half the country will blame Trump and the GOP for the collapse of the political system.

      The article makes a couple of very good points. Nepotism in the state sector is a problem because people outside the kinship group pay taxes to fund the state and have no way to opt out of paying them if the kinship group doesn’t deliver for us.
      
      Second, cultural factors do affect economic behaviour. If Maori in general are to benefit from the resources they are receiving from Treaty settlements, they need to consider explicitly what their cultural drivers are and how to balance these against the attitudes and behaviours necessary to maximise returns on their investments.

Radio NZ has been taken over by bogans with their gidday mate lingo. It gets painful, along with silly giggling over trivia and obsession with Trump while we await some serious news, delivered with clarity and skill.
Mani Dunlop spoke in an annoyingly singsong voice, stumbled over long words or when she had to read out loud, emphasised the wrong words like prepositions and auxiliary verbs to the extent of distorting the sense and showed a shallow grasp of history or any substantive knowledge. She too did far too much silly giggling during what should have been a flagship news programme.
Her Te Reo may have been good but I cannot judge that that as along with the vast majority of the listeners, I am guessing, I stop listening until English is spoken again and I can understand what is being said.

  A good point. The woman on one of those breakfast shows (which I accidentally see from time to time) with the moko, reels off the reo with apparent ease but when she speaks for any length of time in English her diction is poor and she often stumbles.
  
  Reminds me of my high school German teacher who informed the class we were being taught “High German” which referred to the mode of speaking, choice of construction and accent. Took me years to learn that what she meant was we were learning the language as if we were to the manor born, not a bunch of Trevs from the backblocks. Of course we had no idea about all that but to native Germans it would have been as obvious as us listening to Rees-Mogg versus some Cockney larrikin.

Regardless of what you think of Ardern, and personally speaking, I have a very low opinion of her capability, her conduct immediately post the Mosque Shooting was handled well. Putting a Macchiavellian spin on it, it certainly raised her profile to stratospheric levels.

That being said, this was the highlight of her time as PM. Think about that. 5 Years in the top job, and the best you can show for it is how you responded after a massacre.

If it wasn’t for the act of a mad gunman, her legacy would be less than nothing.

There is a lot that one could type in response to this absurdity, and although I have had more than my fair share of scotches this evening (entertaining a girlfriend’s relatives), I will endeavour to cycle through three points:

1) I am never snorting any SARS-2 vaccine ever.

2) Also too though, it is dumb that we are still testing vaccines against a virus which has long since become a threat equivalent to the common cold.

3) Furthermore, I find it embarrassing that the allegedly knowledgeable and wise vaccinator gurus who rule us, had to go directly for the shiny new mRNA toy technology – which has proven itself to be total shit – while failing to pursue literally any other path.

Like him or loathe him, Cam Slater’s updated post he wrote a year ago about Ardern is brilliant, accurate and should be the Wikileak page entry for that human wrecking ball which is leaving today. Thank fuck.

When I had that three-hour lunch with her I came away thinking that this woman makes a lot of sound and thinks she is informed and interested about the world and politics. But on reflection, at the time, I said to David Farrar, who was also there, that she was just mouthing slogans and platitudes. Bumper-sticker slogans and rehearsed lines. There was no depth there, and there still isn’t.
She is fake, more fake than a $10 copy watch bought in the back alleys of Hong Kong.

I met her once, not for long, but I formed the same opinion within 2 minutes. At the time I had been a lifelong Labour supporter. That moment was the end of a 40 year relationship.

Like all politicians, she has claimed many, many things, about why she entered politics. She professes wanting to end child poverty – she even made herself the minister in charge of ending child poverty. She also claimed that climate change was her generation’s nuclear free moment.

On both of those claimed driving forces for her entering politics she has failed massively and comprehensively. All the child poverty statistics are either materially worse or have barely budged. Her climate change commitments are a joke. She wrecked an industry on a ‘Captain’s Call’ and then presided over the largest imports of coal we have ever seen, into a country that is sitting on huge coal reserves. Every single signature election promise has been an abject failure. She told people she was going to make houses more affordable – their cost has more than doubled. She promised to build 100,000 KiwiBuild homes, but it turned out that she couldn’t build a house in a room full of Lego. She promised light rail to the airport and has failed to lay even a single centimetre of track. None of those things are evil, but they are all dishonest and show a predilection towards failure after bold promises.

Never forget just how bad this woman actually was, and I didn’t even repeat Slater’s comments on the vicious covid policies she implemented.

Definitely worth reading the whole thing and keeping a copy as a reminder to give to people who, in years to come, will try and tell us how “amazing” she was. And share it widely.

  I wish to return your attention to the cancelation of Mr Batchelor’s meeting.
  That cancelation and the way you went about it and your justification were not acceptable.

  Mr Batchelor is presenting alternate views on Governance. Ideally the Government itself including ACC would be doing this but unfortunately they are not. Sadly the Government has misled us all on Co Governance, and we deserve to hear all of the views on this subject. The Government has repeatedly said that there is nothing to fear. I disagree. A little while ago the Waitangi tribunal recommended to the Government that they give back all land from Rienga to Devonport to Ngapuhi. Maori Politicians have reinforced that with statements that this will include all privately owned land as well. Just last week the Waitangi tribunal recommended to Government that they invest in a special Mountain talker to talk to Mount Taranaki to listen to its troubles. And yet they say we have nothing to fear?? Are you kidding me ?
  Fear of co Governance is deep in every New Zealander and both local and central Government need to make strong efforts to address this fear, and to rationalize the entire Co Governance drivel.
  Why have you supported the Aotearoa Liberation League(ALL)? On the one hand you cancelled Mr Bachelors meeting at extremely short notice, with lame excuses, and yet you facilitated an ALL meeting outside the hall. Why does ALL receive support from Government orgs like ACC, and PSA, and Central Government ? ALL is just a bunch of young lay bouts, infiltrated by well-known off shore trouble makers who specialize in disrupting meetings.
  You are on record as saying you cancelled the meeting for safety reasons and that is a major road with heavy traffic, yet you facilitated an ALL meeting on the grass outside the hall – even more dangerous one would think?
  Ms Wyss. It appears to me that you have a strong political and racist agenda. You are no use to any race or group when you have a biased agenda. If you are not able to conduct yourself in a fair and unbiased manner, then clearly you are not fit for the high positions you hold. Unless you can uphold basic rights in the community, such as Free speech for all, then you are clearly unfit for the job.

Speaking to Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking on Justice Minister Kiri Allan’s critical remarks about RNZ at fiancee Māni Dunlop’s farewell, Defence Minister Andrew Little said as a minister one had to always realise “whatever context you are in you are a minister.

“That’s the way people see you and when I am in the supermarket people stop and talk to me – I am a minister when they are talking to me regardless.

“We’ve all got to bear that in mind,” Little said.

My son and his Japanese wife are in Japan at present, visiting family.
His latest email: “I can’t believe how cheap everything is here! About $20 for a bottle of Bordeaux wine, $3.50 for 70kg car load of rubbish at the tip and then you get that paid back when you drop your recycling off at the recycling centre. Public transport is reliable and cheap. NZ really has gone out of control!
We’ve been to the tip a few times. You drive into a big building where it gets inspected first and then dump the rubbish into a crusher. It gets crushed and incinerated on the spot. “.

Rats ! Yesterday it cost me $36.50 at Kapiti tip for 80kg !

Not good news for the Hospo business.

I fill like I am living out a bad dream and have been transported back to 1979/80 when inflation was starting to gallop, oil crisis had driven pump prices up (carless days anyone?)… and the Left were totally deranged striking all the time….

Walking into Question Time on Wednesday, Hipkins said he did not discuss honours appointments ahead of them being made.
