There’s lazy MSM comment denying that all 5 million in NZ will up sticks & move to Oz. However, that’s not even possible; a lot of people here are not NZ citizens & therefore are ineligible for Albo’s new path.

Out of curiosity I wondered how many non NZ citizens are in NZ, but couldn’t find out. Perhaps someone with better control of the Google machine might know.

    That list of comparative wages for jobs is a shocker. Somebody should do a guest post here at KB with that as centre piece and the simple question of how National/ACT will fix it.

        If that is the case we would expect that the people in China should have the highest average income of any country in the world. Do they?
        On the other hand we would also expect that Australia should have a higher average income than Norway and Denmark and that they should be similar to incomes in New Zealand. After all, Australia has a population of about 26m and Norway, Denmark and New Zealand are 5.4m, 5.8m and 5.1m respectively.
        Incomes, in US dollars at PPP, are about $62k in Australia and $67.5k, $66.8k and $44k in Norway, Denmark and New Zealand.

        Maybe “fix” isn’t the correct word. We urgently need to address our lack of competitiveness with Australia or else, without a load of immigration, we’re going to deplete our tax base. This country needs to offer much more than just walking tracks, fiords and beaches. It’s not only wages. That post covered education, crime, health and the economy in general. All indicators are, quite frankly, appalling. The current generation have different attitudes to those who went before them. Settling down, big families, mortgages, house etc are not what they seek now. Quality of life with high wages is what they seek. Students with high loans can’t pay them off in NZ and will end up offshore. Food is 20-30% cheaper in Australia and you can buy a brand new townhouse 20 minutes north of Brisbane, towards the Sunshine Coast, for AUD $650K ish. Young people will go there. It is that simple. As I say, we can’t attract nurses, doctors, teachers and police officers with just the offering of nice beaches, walking tracks and cafes if they can’t afford to live here.

        Economists have calculated that the optimal population size for a country is 10 million people. A lower population is not the reason for our failures.
        
        We are not much poorer than Australia because of our lower population. Resource differentials may play a small part in our relative underperformance, but again economists point out that the countries most laden with resources (Nigeria, Russia etc) are typically poor because they are corrupt. Ample resources lead to rent seeking behaviour. Singapore and Japan have limited resources, so the people realise they need to work hard to get ahead.

        Switzerland (8.7m) and Iceland(370k) top the OECD’s wage scales and they are both small populations, followed by USA (huge) then Luxembourg, Denmark and Norway.
        
        No, it is nothing to do with size.
        
        It is all to do with the value that a person can create.
        Some of that is due to size and demand, but other factors come into play too.

      When I transferred to Suva with the BNZ in 1977 I went on to the Australian pay scale which was a reasonable increase over the New Zealand scale. When I came home in 19977 I tookapay cut.

        You’re sure it’s not widening? Because all the stats I’ve seen say that it is. This guy also agrees:
        
        As far back as 2009, when the 2025 Taskforce (which had been charged by the Key Government to recommend policies which could close the gap in real incomes between New Zealand and Australia, and which I chaired) reported its findings, the gap in real income was about $16,000 per person per year.         Sorry Tom, but Key’s clarion call about “catching up with Australia” was disappeared as soon as Brash produced his (predictably) very unpopular recommendations.
        I have no grounding in economic history, but I am told the divergence between the two economies markedly accelerated from the mid-1980s, with two very different approaches to economic ‘reform’.

      There is nothing you can personally do to lift wages, Labour thinks lifting Min wage does it but it doesn’t, it forces costs on more and more businesses.
      
      All Nats and ACT can do is what Luxon has said is get rid of road blocks, get rid of costs on business, and get rid of stupidity.
      
      These three points can make a huge difference, but we will never catch up with Aussie, there economy is huge compared to ours, that also makes a huge difference.

  Probably doesn’t matter for the Oz citizenship thing. NZ PRs get the Aus SCV same as citizens, so they can go and live there for four years then apply, just like an NZ citizen would.

  There are many non-NZ citizens in NZ, many of whom have lives (almost) their whole life here.
  
  Why? Because there is pretty much zero benefit to citizenship in NZ. Almost every job, benefit and such is open to non-citizens.
  
  I work with people who have lived here since childhood, got married here (to NZ citizens). Raised kids here (NZ citizens). And they are not NZ citizens.
  
  I was astounded when I could vote in NZ elections after being here 12 months as a permanent resident.
  All the social benefits of ACC apply to anyone in the country. Health to all PRs. etc etc.
  
  Join the military? Police
  
  About the only thing for which you have to be a citizen is becoming an MP.
  
  So many people never bother taking an NZ citizenship.

    I can tell you that more recent arrivals from non traditional immigration sources secure NZ citizenship as soon as they are able; with a significant percentage looking for the exit door to Australia as soon as it suits them.

At one time people protesting against Climate Change™ (sigh I know…) were smelly hippies, disheveled in ripped clothes, and looking like they’d not eaten well for weeks. These days those protesters are more likely to be trust-fund supported, kitted out with designer outdoor ware, and to be dropped to the protest in daddy’s Bentley where after they are returned from the chaos they’ve caused by helpful police, and avuncular judges.

So it is good to see one judge finally throwing the book at these entitled, selfish little shits. In this case two of them scaled an arterial traffic bridge on the UK’s M25 and stopped traffic for forty hours.

Their punishment?

3 years in jail!

How awesome is that?!?

I don’t care if they’re out in 6 months. Jail will be such a truly ghastly experience for these two. I imagine sobbing on the inmate’s phone to daddy’s lawyer, ignored complaints about the food, and the sharing of cells with hairy, 130kg tattooed repeat offenders going by the name of Bubba.

I’d like to hug the judge.

  Maybe not that good a sign. The Nazis when they obtained political power dismantled the Brown Shirts. Brown Shirts bullied the opposition and were openly thugs. The Nazis when had power didnt need such an openly aggressive trouble makers if the Nazis claimed everything was fine now.

    On June 30, 1934, the Nazis wiped out the top 200 or so leaders of the “Brown Shirts,” including the group’s leader, Ernst Rohm.

    Over the past few years school attendance has been declining in particular among Maori. The result will be a large cohort of uneducated and under educated adults. The continuing development of AI will mean they are unemployable. Very few Maori babies are born to a married mother and father. Add all this together and the result will be a large increase in gang numbers and crime.
    NZ will become like South Africa where citizens arm themselves and live behind high walls and gates to protect themselves from marauding gangs.
    And to add to the problem Maori will feel cheated that they dont see any of the rewards of co-governance.

For instance, the US has had affirmative action and full civil rights for 60 years, and things have not improved but have become even worse.         People have re-enforcing habits.
        Those that take the loser offramp from the highway to success in one area of their life are more likely to take the loser offramp in other areas and tend to be surrounded by those that made similar poor decisions.
        
        There is a solution: look for role models outside your normal circle of acquaintances.
        
        It must be hard to win when you are surrounded by people who call you out for “acting white” for doing your homework.

        I think it is getting harder and harder to protect yourself in South Africa.
        
        In NZ you are legally allowed to use a firearm for self defence, but you are not allowed to own a firearm (or any other weapon) for the purpose of self defence. That shotgun you own for the purpose of bunny shooting can still be used for self defence.
        
        Ditto that can of oven cleaner, that knife in the kitchen, that baseball bat: can’t be owned for the purpose of being used as a weapon, but can be pressed into service as a weapon if needed.

  Last week the Court of Appeal – which sits twice yearly – considered the case of one Rodney Toki, a prolific and incorrigible burglar and armed robber. Toki was found guilty of a string of burglaries and armed robberies, and was remanded on bail for sentence. While on bail, he committed another string of offences, some of them violent.
  
  In the Supreme [High] Court of Tonga, Toki was sentenced to 12.5 years for his first lot of robberies, and three years – to run concurrently – for his second. The Crown appealed the Judge’s decision to make the second sentence run concurrently with the first,
  
  The Court of Appeal agreed, saying :
  
  “This is one of those rare cases where there is little if any hope of his rehabilitation. The protection of society requires that he remain imprisoned for a lengthy period, which properly reflects the total seriousness of his two distinct bouts of criminal offending,”
  
  I suspect the Court of Appeal judges – all retired NZ or Australian High Court judges – must rather enjoy coming up here where they can mete out true justice, unrestrained by bullshit like the Sentencing Act 2002, which gives numerous discounts for offenders, which if ignored, result in a successful appeal. The good citizens of Tonga are now free of the depredations of Mr Toki for 15 years.

    Who’s pocket does that end up in? various media companies (add that to the $55M…) and left sympathizing urban elitist advertising and marketing companies.
    
    The governments have been doing this for years with dozens of PSA’s – ACC ads, drink driving campaigns etc – tens of millions have been funneled into the advertising/marketing industry over the years. They know what side their bread is buttered on, now they are all toeing the party line: So many ads on TV using the A word instead of NZ, lots of jolly gay couples, nearly every family is either non-European or mixed race. The corporate marketing companies in NZ are right on board with the governments woke agenda and are getting well paid for it. National and ACT are going to have a hard time winding this back along with everything else but they could start by turning the money taps off.

        Crap eh – tomorrow the Dawn ANZAC parade in Papamoa Beach, at the relatively new Memorial appears to have been taken over by the illustrious local leader nice guy Buddie Mikaera.
        It has been called by him in a Maori name and will have all the mass Maori trimings, songs and everything else, in honour of the Maori of both World wars and Vietnam, in addition to the traditional and regular rememberences.
        As due to the location be a very good service and many children will attend as expected even at dawn, for them to learn where we are going.

Latest reports from the NATO-Russia war alleges that the Ruskies supersonic missiles are causing serious damage. It’s an alarming development if it’s correct. Blowing up a concrete bunker control centre 100m below ground.

Previous reports from these guys have proven to be correct. And the US confirms that their anti aircraft system can not shoot these supersonic missiles down.

  I won’t pay to read that rag, I won’t give them oxygen but I managed to read it in another way.
  It is a horror story.
  
  New Zealand rates of puberty blocker use are much higher than the UK, where the Tavistock Clinic’s Gender Service (GIDS) was closed due to unsafe practices. In New Zealand, Dr Sue Bagshaw reports that 65 per cent of her clinic’s 100 patients receive them. The Tavistock GIDS clinic prescribed blockers to about 6 per cent.
  
  Those numbers are nauseating. That is child abuse.
  
  Is NZ the basket case experimental centre for all the shit ideas in the world? It certainly looks that way.
  
  The overall New Zealand rate is higher too. Pharmac data shows New Zealand has had 703 children on puberty blockers compared with about 1000 prescribed them in England over the same 10-year period.
  
  As I looked around for further info on the subject I came across this gem from 2013.
  
  The parents of a seven-year-old girl are backing a decision for her to live as a boy and to medically stop puberty.

  This is horrific child abuse. Nothing less. These people are dangerous to our children. I wish them no ill, do what you want to do in your own space and time, but do not negatively impact on others. What you are promoting will cause incredibly harm to so many people and their families.

Foodstuffs supermarkets are displaying a letter, saying that new rules about “taxable supply information” now means that retail sales over $1,000 must come with a receipt that includes the purchaser’s name and contact information.

Why?

In response to request 8, the advertising component of the total expenditure on the Unite Against
COVID-19 (UAC) Campaign, and Vaccine Campaign from April 2020 to 31 August 2022 was
$116,603,499. This comprised the following:
• Unite Against COVID-19 advertising $71,576,396 (from April 2020 to 31 August 2022)
• Vaccine advertising $45,027,103 (from March 2021 to 30 June 2022) – DPMC no longer has
responsibility for the vaccine campaign from 1 July 2022 and it is now administered by the
Ministry of Health.

I’m not sure how much Government spent on the 3-Waters advertising Campaign……. or the Support Matariki, etc.

      If it is accurate then this country is no longer a democracy, more akin to a kleptocracy.

        Frankly why we have over 100 MPs is beyond me. Most are seat warmers especially the list ones. Governments only take notice of lobbyists and consultants, also carefully selected focus groups. Watched Vice last night the story of Dick Cheney frightning. Civil service is now a poodle of any government. I agree with the many bloggers who say if Nats win it will make very little difference.   Did someone say that nationalising water supplies will relieve local bodies of having to borrow billions to update reticulation – pipes, reservoirs, etc?
  
  The argument seemed to be that ratepayers will no longer be liable as guarantors of local body borrowing, because the Government will guarantee any borrowing needed, and that it would be able to raise money at a lower interest rate.
  
  This overlooks the fact that Government guarantees are national liabilities, and reduce net national assets. The country’s net worth falls, and that is reflected in State borrowing costs.
  
  If local bodies borrow, their interest costs reflect the management and credit worthiness of the particular local body. That’s the way the system should work, in my view. Pooled borrowing shields the incompetent, the spendthrift.
  
  The Leftist domination of local bodies, reflected in the bodies’ national organisation, has contributed much to the Leftist-Maori activist takeover of the national water system.

    There is no Government Guarantee on the Water Services Entities borrowings. The backstop is the Terrritorial Authorities who make up 50% of Governance but according to the distorted view of ownership implied here do still own the pipes. The borrowing is intended to be very long term and interest only. What could possibly go wrong for ratepayers? They will be on the hook for borrowings by an entity they will have perhaps one tenth ( if there are say 10 TA’s in the entity ) of half ( remainder being Manawhenua ) of control over and no ability to get rid of incompetent management who can easily stack up losses through bad project management. That borrowing will never be repaid so the obligation is in perpetuity.
    
    All the pipedreams about savings for ratepayers need to be scrutinised a lot harder than they have been so far.

      At present, ratepayers can be, and have been sued for liability incurred by local body borrowing.
      
      The State, the new water supplier, would have to back any borrowing for the nationalised water scheme with a guarantee.
      
      How else would the national water organisation borrow? What NZ or international investor would lend without feasible security being provided?

      In that case, borrowing units – bonds – will have to be both perpetual and saleable.
      
      And if they provide a rat-shit yield, as is likely, where will the capital come from to refurbish ageing water facilities?

Front page of Herald and media interviews this morning with nurses union about increasing threats and harassment.

There should be zero tolerance of this in society but somehow we seem to (or the Govt does) accept it

However key points raised seem to be
– not enough nurses which causes undue delays and leads to patients being frustrated
– nurses are valued and paid enough

To me the root cause is the first point and the second point to me is weird as suggests if nurses are paid more they would put up with the threats and harassment?

What is most concerning regarding the root cause is no one in the media will raise the elephant in the room with the nurses union. Doesn’t the nurses union still ban unvaccinated nurses and overnight problem of mass under staffing could be solved?

    every 2 to 3 months the docs and nurses would declare a “nurses” or “doctors” only day ; patients stay at home while we have a giggle for one or two hours ( out of an 8.5 hr working day ) , and it will usually be on a Monday or Friday preceeding or after a long weekend , or break .

  I think the violence they see talking about is now blaring out in the under staffed work force, it’s a very sad day, but this government have made things so very bad, when I was in hospital all the nurses were great, friendly and helpful, I really to feel sorry for them, I don’t give a shit if they bring nurses in from the Phillipines, I have had them as nurses and they are also good at the job, time for this rotten regime to wake up

  Of course nurses will face the brunt of patient ire – they are the people the public deals with.
  
  People shouldn’t be getting grumpy with the nursing staff, but who else is really there to let off steam at?
  
  For example, in 2020 I was prepped for theatre 4 times. Not allowed food/water for the day etc, then finally got told at around 5pm that my slot was cancelled….. just to be repeated again the next day. I was polite about it, but many others are not.
  
  The sort of people that like to threaten and demand “their rights” are also the most abusive.

Anyone not born in New Zealand should have no right to be in our parliament slurping at the taxpayers expense making while decisions that directly affect us.

    That people like Juile Ann Genter are elected to Parliament is a function of the flawed electoral system.
    
    BTW one change to electoral law that would make sense – restricting the right to vote to citizens. AFAIK New Zealand is the only developed country that allows non-citizens to vote.

      Exactly right on voting rights should be restricted to citizens only. This should go through to local bodies as well.
      
      Citizenship should be difficult to attain and require more than just money ‘invested’ or a letter from the relevant immigration minister of the day.

    kisekiman – I’ve seen numbers from 450 – 500 in various places, I’ll do my best to get a good source for you. There are 50,000 nurses in NZ apparently which would make the mandated around 1%.
    Certainly sounds like a plausible number.

      Super is a “transfer payment”. Money from one group of people (A) transferred to another group (B).
      
      There are quite a few transfer payments. (A) is alwways “taxpayers”. (B) can be unemployed people or injured people or teenagers living apart from parents. Probably a few others – the payments are all called “benefits”. Generally they are income-tested and abated.
      
      Except super – (B) is old people who have lived here for 10 years and there is no income-testing.
      
      And as for “I have paid in to it all my life … ” so where is it? Your pension is being funded from your children’s taxes – end of.

Enjoy your benefit by all means, but remember that it IS a benefit. Us workers will happily look after you, the less productive 😀

      Superannuation is sold to the punters in a way that is entirely different from “the benefit” (aka, in most people’s minds, the dole).
      
      Superannuation is sold to people as a form of communal state run retirement savings: pay in and then later you get to claim.
      
      This is very different to all the WINZ-style hand-ouis to non-productive people.
      
      If you’re going to call superannuation a benefit, then you may as well call using the roads a benefit or using public hospitals etc.
      
      When, at 65, I start claiming the superannuation it won’t be someone else paying it. It will be because I have been working in NZ for 35 years paying rather healthy amounts into it (enough to pay my super as well as that of another two or three people).

    Mike – lay out your argument against Nat Super then. I know you are capable, so why not substantively engage us with your reasoned argument.
    
    My perspective:
    For people over 40 the majority would have been in the workforce for a minimum of 20 years and those in their 60s around 40 years.
    
    40 Years ago equals 1983. Nat Super was in full force. If we go back 45 years we arrive in 1978 – and Nat Super from memory was in place then as well….having been introduced by Rob Muldoon around the time he won the 1974 election (I was a kid so memories of 1974 are vague)
    
    All Taxpayers have paid to support that Nat Super policy since introduction and that policy has not been significantly changed for the last 40 years – been some tinkering, but no radical change (raising the eligibility age in the 80s in steps to 65, means testing which was done away with quickly as political unpopular)
    
    Therefore it is my view, that it is only fair for those who have been in the workforce supporting the payment of Nat Super via their taxes for 20 plus years should be eligible for Nat Super when they retire.
    
    IF you want to make the argument it is unsustainable – then lay out the argument.
    
    Personally I am up for change that its inter-generationally fair using compulsory, untouchable Kiwisaver accounts to fund younger generations retirement, setting a sliding scale of eligibility for Nat Super payments down to the age of forty, where 64 years are unaffected and receive an indexed Nat Super till death and 40 year olds and young get zero Nat Super.
    
    Those 40 and over are compensated by lump sum deposits into their Kiwisaver accounts – e.g. a 40 year old would get a small amount into their Kiwisaver to reflect the compounding of investment savings over time such as it offsets their potential Nat Super entitlement…. the amount increasing to a cut off point based on advancing age till a balance point of eligibility for Nat Super is match by project Kiwisaver balances.
    
    (Note: again this a sliding scale, the intention to neutralise the impacts on those least able due to age to save enough by retirement to offset the loss of, or reduce amount of, Nat Super)
    
    If a transition scheme is done correctly retirement will be self funded and the Governments role reduced to bailing out the true unfortunate among us – though even they will have Kiwisaver accounts that the government can fund if someone is out of work for 3 months or longer – so essentially the Government would be out of the income in retirement game completely
    
    Broad sketch policy there – lots of potential issues of course. BUT at least I have engaged with a modicum of thought, not just sniping…

        The retirees paid taxes to the government with the “promise” of a benefit in the form of superannuation. If successive governments had not pissed away the value of the dollar (like Robertson most recently) then the superan. would have been funded. This also applies to personal savings for retirement.         Ian, the way to transition is slowly with a sliding scale.
        For example, something like this:
        * people who are 40 get to contribute 50% less towards superannuation and claim only 50%
        * people who are 30 get to contribute 75% less and only claim 25%.
        * people who are 20 no longer have to contribute and won’t get anything.
        
        That allows us to get rid of this broken system without undue hardship.
        
        It is, of course, completely broken to just pick on old people as a burden on young people. In a socialist society we have all sorts of burdens:
        * the idle on the working.
        * the young having university paid for (mostly) by older people.
        * …
        
        Clearly state meddling is damaging.
        
        There are times when it makes sense to use the state. For example, it would be difficult to privately sort out policing, roads and defence. But most things should really not be anything to do with the state.

      Jim, I spent 50 years working for the same Company Reid Trailers. 50 years!
      6 different bosses/owners. I had many opportunities to buy the Company but I didn’t.
      Buying would mean I would be on the phone with customers all day – not me.
      I work with my hands. I liked what I did, must have to stay 50 years!
      What have Governments done with all of the Taxes I have paid?
      Remembering perspective. I started on $1.35 an hour. Rent was $12, food was $18.
      Mike thinks the Tax I paid on that $1.35 is irrelevant in 2023. Yes Mike is a troll, but sometimes he is very knowledgeable.

        Add to that. I collected Super at 65 but I carried on working until 70. I would still be working if the Company was not forced to close. Lease could not be renewed, and could not find another factory. Assets in storage and stopped trading.

      I have no problem with Steve collecting the benefit he is entitled to. I only object to him, and others, claiming that national superannuation is not a welfare benefit.
      So, I have no ‘your argument against Nat Super’. The only people I know with such an argument would be those who oppose all welfare benefits and/or assume charitable giving could replace a system of social security, but that’s a lunatic fringe infected by odd strains of alleged libertarian ‘thinking’ from the US.
      FWIW, I think the country and individual pensioners would have been much better off had the 1974 contributory scheme not been dumped in favor of the 1975 unfunded, gold-plated option.
      As you say, a modest claw back by means of the surcharge was very unpopular. Raising the age eligibility and introducing Kiwisaver were minor steps back towards a more sustainable direction.

        I think the key issue with Nat Super is it is perceived as a Retirement entitlement for working to support the whole government structure through your working life.
        
        yes it is another benefit in general terms but both major parties have set the expectation that you will get Nat Super when you reach retirement age – and by setting that expectation it influences peoples spending and saving decisions from mid thirties onwards as people are generally mature by then and considering the long term future…
        
        The universality of Nat Super is appealing as it makes it simple to administer

  I heard a story on the radio about the huge factories employing thousands of people to knock out sheets and pillowcases that are sold over here for not much.

Is it me, or should this story of the NZ pilot held hostage in Papua be a much bigger deal?

The West Papua National Liberation Army are demanding that all of West Papua be liberated for his freedom, or else he will be killed.

Indonesia sent elite forces to find him, 36 of them, and they got ambushed, 4 killed, a dozen or so captured and (supposedly) executed. A total failure of a mission.

  The failure of the ill-conceived rescue mission has been well reported. There have been at least a dozen stories on Stuff alone so far about Philip Mehrtens.
  There is very little NZ can do, except ask the Indonesian government to negotiate, advice which Indonesians would probably ignore.

  The West Papua liberationists have been seeking support for their cause, so NZ surely has some leverage with them.
  
  When the Dutch ended their colonial control of Indonesia in 1949, it continued to hold West Papua.
  
  According to Wikipedia, US President Kennedy pressured the Netherlands to hand over administration to the UN to placate Indonesia, and the Dutch did so in 1962.
  
  The deal included a plebiscite on joining Indonesia, and Wikipedia says of this:

But here we go again – Australia announces that Kiwis can now gain citizenship relatively quickly. Victoria immediately launches an ad campaign in NZ to attract/steal our qualified teachers, Brisbane is tempting/stealing our qualified health workers – and Labour gets the media to spin it that they have solved the 501 crisis?
So now Oz have dumped most of the crooks/ratbags back with us, thrown a carrot out for all of our best workers, Labour is celebrating the announcement as if this was a big win for us ? Duh.

      Australia no longer revokes Australian Citizenship from any Australian citizen acquiring citizenship of another nation. That change happened in 2003.
      
      New Zealand citizens are free to acquire Australian citizenship. That in no way affects their New Zealand citizenship.

    In Government departments most working groups, titles, executive teams, and IT systems have exclusively Maori names. For example there is no “document management system”. One example I saw was “Te Kete Ipurangi” (online knowledge basket).
    
    In order to function in these agencies you need to rote learn the key Maori title, functions and systems so you know what folk are referring to. (For example you get an email saying “Morena – please transfer your document to Te Kete Ipurangi”).
    
    You also need to rote learn how to pronounce all of these terms, because if you fail, the resident language police will mark you down.

The article, of course, refers to the Wellington Regional mayors.
It raises the question of how much of the mayors’ support has been considered from the viewpoint of the benefits for their constituents.
Mayor Campbell Barry states “Politics being put ahead of good long-term policy.”
But I guess he would as he represents the Labour Party.
Both Tory Whanua and Anita Baker see it as an answer their financial difficulties with water requirements.
Have they considered whether the short-term answer may not be the best in the longer term.
Does being mayor mean that your view must be the right one?

But secondly, the statement was false, and she later had to admit that she had accepted a $1500 cash donation from Foon and his wife.

This is a big shout out to St John Ambulance staff and the hospital system. Yes, I understand the huge problems (and I hate St John’s adoption of a totally unnecessary Maori appendage), but the people at the coal face are doing a wonderful job.
Very early yesterday morning our oldest son, who boards with us, was struck by an absolutely excruciating abdominal pain. It was so bad, I seriously feared for his life. We called St John’s, and an ambulance arrived promptly. The 3-person team were amazing, and very professional. They were obviously very well trained, and they quickly stabilised our son, and had him off to Christchurch Hospital, with me in the jump seat.
Even at that hour, there was a large queue in A&E, but our son’s condition got him quick attention. I was told by one of the admitting staff that because of the staff shortages, some people had been waiting 6-7 hours for attention, but our son was seen within 3 hours by a nurse (male, Chinese, again very well trained), and an hour later by a doctor. A CT scan early afternoon (looked at by a senior doctor) showed no discernible cause of the condition, leaving everybody puzzled, particularly as by this time the pain had virtually vanished. (I strongly suspect an urgent call for prayer to our circle of friends played a not insignificant role in that.) And #1 son was released mid-afternoon.
I am full of admiration for the way in which those at the sharp end of the various systems are doing such an amazing job under very trying circumstances. One of the ambulance staff told me their normal shift is 12 hours — that’s insane, considering the complex and emotionally demanding nature of the job! I am also extremely thankful they are there and do their job so well in such situations.

  They are fantastic. I was fortunate/unfortunate? to use St Johns 4 times late last year.
  Chest pains going down the left arm. Aspirin, nitro, didn’t seem to help. Off to NS Hospital. Bypass everyone and straight into Xray.
  After 4 times they dug deeper. Pain was rotor cuff tendon tear. Pain from arm to chest not the other way. Now maintained with super painkillers and cortisone, until I can get surgery. Surgery is a problem all NZ. I am off to have Cubital Tunnel fixed on May 4 th. Hopefully not deferred again.
  As bad as the Health System is in NZ the St Johns and NS Hospital performed excellent. I don’t know how St Johns operate in Christchurch, but up here it is $90 per year for those in this house to travel free. Without that coverage it is $98 per trip.
  $90, less than $2 per week.

  Our local St Johns team completely lost any support from me when I went to quote a job for their new ambulance station.
  On arriving, I was asked to wear a mask. I genuinely laughed out loud, thought he was taking the piss.
  No, he put a mask on and asked me to. I politely said “no, they don’t work”. He proceeded to tell me it was to protect his mother who was frail and he didn’t want to pass anything to her. I said, “first, like the vaccine, they do nothing to prevent infection or transmission of covid, second, I’m presuming she’s jabbed which means you believe she’s protected?”
  Pretty much end of conversation and me not doing the job.
  
  I’m over pretending to take this shit seriously. I’m just going to laugh at these clowns from now on and walk away. Virtue signaling morons.

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake has hit off the coast of the North Island on Monday and those who felt it in New Zealand have been warned to “move immediately” away from the coast.

The quake occurred at sea near the Kermadec Islands, 1025km northeast of Whangārei, GeoNet reported.

The National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) said they were assessing whether the quake would create a tsunami that could affect New Zealand.

It struck at 12.41pm, at a depth of 33km.

The recent fall in the headline inflation figure to 6.7% was interesting.

Kommissar Robbo, the Team of $55 Million and the banks all had a group hug about how great the numbers were. After all, 6.7% represented only a 245% overshoot of the Reserve Banks 2% target. What’s not to love about this result? Just swap out some food purchases for electronics, and you will be in perfect balance. Sure, eating the plastic would be tastier with condiments, but alas the current price of sauces prohibits such luxury.

Disinformation that the banks might not be completely dispassionate observers of interest rate decisions are totally unfounded, I am told. New Zealand property prices are only down on average from the market peak in November 2021 by 16.2%, with Auckland and Wellington falling by 21.7% and 24.4% respectively. Why would the banks care a jot if the OCR went up, in this context? Our banks are and effective. I’m sure the Disinformation Project will release a report confirming the banks are 100% safe any day now.

How much further would the OCR need to rise, before bank write-offs started being announced? I don’t know…

Although the headline figure was good, the devil was said to be in the detail. The tradable sector saw inflation drop from 8.2% to 6.4%, mainly due to the fall in the oil price. With our current account deficit an eye-watering 8.9% of GDP, I’m not convinced that the reduction in tradables inflation is necessarily sustainable. Of course, the bank economists in unison tell me that the current account deficit will definitely come down because of – reasons. Chinese students will come here in droves to our top-notch education facilities, to brush up on their Mānglish. Or tourists will stream in, to enjoy our low cost of living and rates of casual violence. Or we’ll ramp up our exports of carbon credits, by planting some more pine trees.

Perhaps the bank commentators are correct. Maybe New Zealand can just happily continue to run a record-breaking current account deficit into perpetuity, with zero consequences. Maybe the NZ peso will remain impervious to wildly imbalanced trade flows. After all, the NZ peso is backed by two heavyweight financial titans in Mr Orr and Kommissar Robbo, so what possibly could go wrong? Trust the process!

Non-tradable inflation at 6.8% is the highest since they started recording it in 1999. That’s a sign. We should party like it’s 1999! Except this time, hold the vegetables (prices have increased 22% in the past year) or milk, eggs, and cheese rose (up 15%). Or any food, for that matter (up 12%). Actually, cancel the party.

Personally, I’m not convinced that the OCR, or inflation for that matter, has peaked. We will see…

Another reason why I am voting Act.

I know the difference between right and wrong better than Labour and Green MPs and now most National MPs.

We had a trans weight lifter already bumping a woman off the podium.

It is simply unfair that biological women are expected to compete against biological men.

Thumbs up who agrees with me and who agrees with National thumbs down.

Like many issues, it’s not simple. National’s view is that this is actually a matter for the respective sports bodies to deal with. That will be different depending on the sport. We support inclusion but not at the expense of fairness or safety. I note that both swimming and athletics had developed policies that restrict transgender women in competition.

  AFAIK only at Olympic and other elite levels. Doesn’t stop a woke school allowing trans ‘girls’ competing against girls in sports.
  
  Sorry National, it really is “that simple”.

      It’s nothing to do with National. Not sure you can understand that. The sporting bodies are the ones you need to write, not trying to get the government to have any say in sporting bodies. As I said if you want to get the govt involved in this then a labour greens govt will force trans into woman’s sports. It is a problem for the sporting bodies to deal with, and only them.

  The human rights act already specifies that you can segregate sport by sex. (Not gender identity -sex) It says
  
  “9 Exception in relation to sport
  (1)
  Subject to subsection (2), nothing in section 44 shall prevent the exclusion of persons of one sex from participation in any competitive sporting activity in which the strength, stamina, or physique of competitors is relevant.”

Two articles – 1 names those responsible and the other doesn’t. Why are the people responsible for the bankrupt pool company named and photographs shown, but the tenants who completely destroyed a landlord house given anonymity.

This isn’t a court decision. It’s a media decision . Media are part of the crime problem as they won’t hold offenders to account or report accurately.
