Experience warn of Capital Gains Tax Complexities after Inland Revenue Report.
Has David Parker used this tax data to mislead New Zealander’s, I ask this question because why would former Deputy Commissioner of IRD and now head of the tax advisory firm OliverShaw say the report did not have the necessary data and made to many assumptions to be useful in helping form good tax policies.
It is therefore likely to paint a misleading picture of our tax system making it seem broken when it is not.

Why would a report Commissioned by David Parker be just tossed in the to hard basket and not used as a vote catcher for the upcoming election if you didn’t intend to use it and why has the Prime Minister Chris Hipkins distanced himself from the report before he talks with Business and their Leader this morning.

  Do the sums. Someone on $200k gets much more from this than someone on $40k. The same is true for shifts in the middle income tax brackets.

      The suns. A 30k (or whatever) low income zero-tax band reduces one’s taxable income by 30k.
      
      For someone on 50k paying 17.5% marginal rate that’s a tax saving of 30*.175 = about 5k.
      
      For someone on 200k with a 39% marginal rate, that’s a tax saving of 30*.39 = about 11k.
      
      Not a very efficient way for govt to reduce the tax burden on low incomes … for every dollar you give low income people you give two dollars to high income people.
      
      WFF works better and costs less.

        (Made up tax ranges becuase I dont know what the real ones and cant be arsed looking them up)
        
        Everyone pays 17.5% for the first n (lets say 30, 000) Then those that earn over 30k pay 33% on the money they earn over 30k
        
        A person earning 30,100 would pay 17.5% of 30k = 5250 + 33% of 100 = 33 for a total of 5283
        
        A person earning 100,000 would pay 17.5% of 30k = 5250 + 33% of 70,000 = 23,100 for a total of 28,350
        
        If National makes the first 20,000 tax free this changes to
        
        A person earning 30,100 would pay 17.5% of 10k (30k-20k) = 1750 + 33% of 100 = 33 for a total of 1783 (a saving of 3,500)
        
        A person earning 100,000 would pay 17.5% of 10k (30-20k) = 1750 + 33% of 70,000 = 23,100 for a total of 24,850 (a saving of 3,500)
        
        As you see both earners save the same $ value of tax. The higher earner saves a lower percentage of overall tax, which is ‘progressive’.

        If a 20k (or whatever) tax-free band was introduced and all the other bands were left where they are now, the net effect would be to reduce your taxable income by 20k.
        
        For someone paying 17.5% the tax reduction would be 20×17.5% = about 3.5k.
        
        For someone on 200k with a marginal rate of 39% the saving is 20*39% = about 7.5k
        
        If your taxable income reduces, the decrease in tax paid is at your top marginal rate …

        The $200,000 person pays $58,120 tax
        
        So the $200,000 person pays 7 times as much tax (for the same services).

    This is the biggest point. The government should not be getting more tax if they are just wasting it.
    
    But, for the envious voters and beneficiaries (Labour’s core support base), the idea of making some abstract “rich pricks” hand over money to them is rather appealing.
    
    Waste is rather an abstract concept. Huge numbers of people are beneficiaries of the waste.
    
    We see waste when there is a massive spend up on advertising campaigns which attract 3 nurses from overseas. To the advertising consultants this looks like income.
    
    Nobody really cares about waste if they are getting some of it.

      The biggest beneficiaries of “government” assistance are the very rich, and the very poor. Not just in terms of direct handouts but, in the case of the rich, other benefits through regulations and other policies and protections that they “lobby” to receive. Meanwhile, there is a common notion out there that if a government does anything at all for the middle, this somehow makes the system “Communist” or “Marxist.” Bizarre.

    So is Luxon supportive of a CGT on an item when it is sold? This becomes a very “unfair” tax as exemptions get given for all sorts of things depending on what vote they want to court. Personally I believe that if it is implemented the family home must be included. It will be horribly unpopular and might make people think about what they are voting for.

        KH – If you look at the original application for the research grant by Peter Daszak and the annual ones made thereafter to continue the research you will note that essentially it was to alter the covid virus to be able to infect humans by adding the spike thus enabling the attachment to the ACE receptor in human lungs. They were also attempting to increase the infection mortality rate to somewhere near that of ebola.
        
        All those documents have been released under FOIA. Probably the only thing Steve Otto got wrong is that it was Fauci’s idea. More likely Ralph Baric’s idea.

  Steve – The US has been breaking the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons. They have been doing this outside the CONUS. Why have they had all these laboratories in Ukraine? Because Ukraine has no legislation to prevent bioweapon research. Now we find out that Sudan had one. Who else?
  
  There can be no doubt that “gain of function” research is bioweapon research. The US DARPA has been sponsoring this (and Fauci). Obama quite correctly called a halt to it in the US, but the military continued pursuing it. Maybe there was a wink and a nod from the administration but plausible deniability for having called a halt to it.
  
  What is becoming more and more apparent is that the US military/intelligence/industrial complex are a law unto themselves…..and they are evil people with too much power who will do what they want without any form of civilian oversight.     The opposition seem to be in lockstep with the government, there is certainly very little difference between the two sides.
    
    I believe money has infiltrated our governments, education systems, health systems – every structure we have built that is meant to manage on behalf of society.
    
    Why are so many global politicians (including a few here in NZ, notably Ardern) tied to the undemocratic WEF?
    
    Why was Ardern visiting Blackrock during her visit to the US?
    
    There is undoubtedly a push towards global governance. No conspiracy.
    This is not organic. This is being funded. The latest horrific plan is to give the unelected WHO the power to control future “pandemic” responses. No conspiracy.
    
    Our democratic systems are either being run by completely incompetent idiots who you wouldn’t let use the remote control for the telly, or there is an agenda to remove true democracy from us.
    
    Probably another “conspiracy theory”. Keep your eye on it, things are moving apace.

      This is a complete fallacy. When you live in a society, everyone’s actions necessarily affect everyone else’s. Nobody lives in private, they live in public. If we are to have transgenders, then we need trans-friendly bathrooms; if we have homosexuality, then we need gay bars and pride parades,and so on – all public. The reason we have people thinking they are transgender, and people accepting their delusion, is because all criteria for what is considered acceptable have been long ago placed into the “live and let live” category (i.e. the too hard basket). What happened to Tucker Carlson? His firing was a bombshell in the media because Tucker was a ratings juggernaut with over 3 million viewers. He was the highest rating host in all of cable news.

It seems that Tucker was a threat to the narrative. The narrative is the stance that news media take on an issue. The narrative is dominated by Trump. Trump is a horrible person who is totally unfit to be president of the United States. That’s the narrative.
The January 6th protests were a deadly insurrection where Trump waged war on our democracy. That’s the narrative.

Tucker got the January 6th videos from House speaker Kevin McCarthy. He promised bombshell revelations. On Monday 6th March he delivered. We saw the so called Qanon shaman escorted peacefully by police officers through the capital buildings. As a result he was released from prison.

The police officer, Brian Sicknick, who was allegedly killed by insurrectionists, was seen alive and well on tape after he had supposedly died. It seems he died later of natural causes.

These were bombshell revelations with many more to follow. But after Monday no new tapes were aired and the matter was quietly dropped.

My conclusion is that someone got to the Fox news executives and they got to Tucker.
Tucker was a threat to the narrative. He had to be stopped. And that’s why he was let go.

Australian Institute of Marine Science’s latest study shows that the Great Barrier Reef has never had more coral.
They have been conducting detailed underwater surveys since 1986.
According to the Australian Environmental Foundation their survey of 1004 Australians produced the following results when asked
“Compared to the last 30 years, what do you think the state of coral coverage of the Great Barrier Reef is today?”
Results:
Record high – 3%
Above average – 7%
Average – 28%
Below average 28%
Record Low – 24%
Dont Know – 10%

But most of them will know that ‘Climate Change’ is man-made.

    rockape – not wishing to upset anyone, but it’s been warned about for over a year, the vaccines degrade the innate immune system. This was always going to happen. The more jabs you’ve had, the more prone to illness you’re going to be.
    All of the friends I still have who got jabbed have had covid at least twice. A few of them have had “flu” recently, they say not covid but that’s because they are refusing to test any more.
    
    Like the warning from many that lockdowns would weaken immune systems and would cause a net negative outcome, that it was only kicking shit down the road. So it happened.

        Steve Otto – I’m not trying to worry people, but there is concerning evidence that the jab does weaken your immune system. It doesn’t mean it doesn’t work, just that it won’t work quite as well. There may be variation in the degrees of damage.
        
        My comments about my friends are accurate but still only anecdotal. I don’t avoid them, but my wife and I (so far) have managed to not catch any of the various bugs they’ve had. We do take vitamin C and D and zinc regularly which no doubt helps.
        I may have had covid, I came back to NZ in late 2019 via Hong Kong. Had a horrible flu that lasted a week. No idea if it was or not, but maybe my immune system had a prepper? So far so good, but the one thing that I’ve been taught is, I trust my immune system, I don’t trust our medical system any longer sadly.

  For the Science chapter, the CCC realises that open and interchange of information and innovation have been seriously hampered by the Competitive Crown Research model for Science.
  
  They identify that the Metservice -NIWA control of weather data is unlike that in other countries.
  
  The review found that the existing state-owned enterprise and CRI models that MetService and NIWA operate under have led to more restricted access to observational weather data in Aotearoa New Zealand, compared to other countries.
  
  But again… No practical ideas from the CCC how to improve matters.

      I think you’d need to spend at least a couple of hours interviewing the CEO s of Metservice and NIWA and then take a trip to BOM, Australia; JMA, Japan; CWB, Taiwan; and Met Office UK before you come to any hasty decision.
      
      I think you could probably organise something for just under $100,000.
      
      (probably less than the salary of one Climate Change Commission staffer).

Tucker Carlson was abruptly dismissed from Fox News sometime between Saturday, 4-22-23, and Monday, 4-24-23 (likely closer to the Monday). Many believe the ten-minute segment he made (on 4-19-23) caused Fox News to cancel the most popular news host on national television despite it significantly damaged the network’s financial revenue.

The more freedom of speech and freedom from censorship of information is lost, the more risk anyone who publicly opposes what is happening takes on to speak out against what is happening (e.g., in many countries, political dissent results in your ending up in prison or worse). Similarly, studying the history of almost every evil government that comes to power reveals the same lesson. If you don’t want to speak out against what is happening because it’s uncomfortable, you have to because if you don’t, it will be much harder to speak out in the future.

Today: Elderly man assaulted in his bed. Description of offender ““The offender has been described as a male, about 170cm (5′7″) tall, of a slim build, with a scarf wrapped around his face,”
Hmmm any more details like colour of skin, hair, eyes, ethnicity, tattoos, what was he wearing, colour of the scarf? Is 5 foot 7 tall for a male?

Just reminded me.
We holidayed in Singapore about 10 years ago.
Stayed at Raffles. One of the most memorable hotel experiences ever.
And you couldn’t help but admire how that country is governed. Everybody was so clean and polite. We could go anywhere at anytime and feel safe.

Shame we can’t take a leaf out of their book here….

The IRD report walks a fine political line as Chloe Swarbrick shouts only about the top 300 wealthiest in NZ when in reality surely a wealth tax will have to apply to all wealthy asset holders (including the middle classes). And her constituents are the wealthiest and live in the suburb with NZ’s biggest capital gains. They will have to pay on those assets every year whether they’ve sold them or not.

They won’t want to give the specifics of their tax plan. Because it will affect all people with businesses and homes.

From my perspective, the military situation of the Ukraine is hopeless. Articles have compared the upcoming offensive(!) to D-Day in 1944, but a better comparison would be Operation Spring Awakening in March 1945, the last major German offensive of the war, which had no chance of success and exhausted the last remaining strategic reserves of the Wehrmacht. The Ukrainians still have some quality units, but the army as a whole is severely degraded, without a viable airforce or air defence system, limited logistical capability, and a polyglot collection of equipment. Brave soldiers but they have been bled white with heavy casualties (300,000+ dead, implying 1,200,000 wounded?).

To repeat, the situation is hopeless, and I expect a collapse soon. What worries me is how this ends. The Russians are clearly trying to minimise casualties, since they cannot dismiss the possibility that there will be a direct conflict with NATO, so they need to build up their military power. So what is the end game? Should Ukraine negotiate a deal? Risk nuclear war by fighting to the end? While no-one can doubt the will of the US and European leaders to oppose Russia, their countries do not have the industrial capability. It is an irony that Ukraine is draining the military potential of the West, and, deprived of critical resources from Russia, it may well be the case that the West in the future will be a paper tiger.

    You confuse nominal GDP with industrial capacity. China and Russia have an extensive industrial base, the former greater than Europe and USA combined. PPP provides a more realistic picture, and we must remember that Europe’s share of the global economy has continued to decline, suffers from chronic underinvestment, and is burdened by high indebtedness. Nor is there much overflow capacity, and arms output is something which takes decades to develop. You have to develop the machine tools, train a highly skilled workforce, and establish a secure supply chain for specialised components. All this does not bode well for armaments manufacture on an industrial scale, no counting the lamentable state of Nato’s armed forces qualitatively.

  Russians have run out of serviceable equipment and ammo – now fielding 1950’s hardware. Their vast fields of supposedly usable cold war tanks etc had all been plundered for cash-convertible parts during last 30 years and left to rust. They have lost nearly all their high tech weaponry, hundreds of thousands of servicemen, most of their professional soldiers – and are now relying on poorly trained, very demotivated conscripts pushed into battle with guns to their heads and using easily intercepted un-encrypted radio comms.
  
  Ukraine have received nearly 1000 pieces of fast, accurate modern armour in recent months, along with lots of high tech infantry equip, and have been training mobilised forces (most with previous army training) during relative quiet of last few months in west as Russia battered themselves in failed winter offensive as they are picked off relentlessly by high accuracy western weaponry and drones.
  
  Mud season ends in next few weeks. Ukrainians have short internal lines of communications – 2-300km from central location gets them to front, and are harrying Russians across Dnipro in Kherson. Russians have to scrabble 1000km around outside to get from one end of front to the other. Ukrainians can feint and shift forces quickly to overwhelm Russian defenses.
  
  Ukrainians are getting better gear all the time. Likely F16’s soon, and have long range drones and missiles nearing entry into service.
  
  Not sure if Ukrainians will be successful in their coming offensive, but decent chance they take south to sea of Azov, and from there maybe Crimea is possible. You wouldn’t want to be a Russian soldier now though.

  Another point is the demographics of Ukraine. Beginning with a population of 45 million they have lost 9 million to the 4 oblasts of the east. 15 million have emigrated as refugees (4 million of those to Russia). These have been mainly women and children and men of military age who were able to bribe their way across the Polish frontier. Polls taken in Poland suggest only one third would be willing to return to Ukraine when peace is established. So about 21 million to rebuild the west of the country. Fortunately the American banks and hedge funds are ready to step to the plate even after the British have sprayed depleted uranium on the world famous black soil.

  At some point there will be a DMZ. The “winner” in that case will be Ukraine because in no sane world should Ukraine have been able to resist Russia. It did and Russia was hopelessly beaten to a draw.
  
  Russia is an empty shell. It was during Communism and so it is during its current Oligarchy. If not for nuclear fission it would be a backwater. As [who was it?] said, Russia is a gas station with nukes. Russia/Soviet Union was only ever considered a “superpower” because it had nuclear weapons. It was a poor country with world-ending weapons.
  
  China on the other hand is an economic powerhouse created *wholly* by Western technology and investment and a population that offered cheapish labour and eager intent. And at some point very soon it will have a self-sustaining middle class of enormous proportions and the game will be over.
  
  And that is germane to its relationship with Russia because the Russian oligarchy can supply China’s energy and mineral needs *forever*.
  
  We will then live in a world where individual citizenship will be a purely economic value. Human rights? Free speech? Forget it.
  
  And quite frankly, most people, at least in the medium term, will be quite happy with it because the ideal of living on your feet instead of dying on your knees will have become outdated.
  
  The politically-connected overclass will have triumphed. The slaves will be dulled by a bright and shiny world, yet held subservient under a heavy boot.

Previously suspended but now expelled from the UK Conservative Party, MP Andrew Bridgen had this to say.

My expulsion from the Conservative Party under false pretences only confirms the toxic culture which plagues our political system.

Above all else this is an issue of freedom of speech. No elected Member of Parliament should ever be penalised for speaking on behalf of their constituents and those who have no such voice or platform.

As a vocal critic of the vaccine rollout amongst other issues such as Net Zero, illegal immigration and political corruption the Party has been sure to make an example of me.

  To make it remotely worthwhile, the survey would need to ask about vaxx status, but this would then make it even more obvious that being vaxxed stops neither infection nor transmission.

“I say again, there will be no new tax everyone would have had to pay, such as a cyclone levy, to fund the recovery.

Which leaves to door open for a tax or levy some people have to pay.

I dunno. Maybe I just have trust issues

This reads like yet another article trying to nudge me towards eating a bug sandwich.

I would almost be willing to place money on the fact that they will spin insects as being a vegan option within the next ten years.

Why are so many security CCTV recordings very low resolution ?
If the object of the exercise is to record clear, unambiguous footage of events such as crimes and trespassing etc then surely the resolution should be as high as possible .
Otherwise most seem to be a waste of time and money.

  I’ve been interested in this for a few years – since navy videos came out. But the more I see and read, (the high profile videos are all pretty well debunked) the less convinced I become.
  
  -Modern videos all look like balloons, planes, stars, drones or CGI, or sensor artifacts from stuff military systems aren’t really designed to track/identify accurately.
  
  -Vast conspiracies do not work, and there is no evidence of any alien parts or ideas ever making it out of lab after supposedly 70 years (unbelievable). One possible exception is Gary Nolan having a piece of magnesium with non-terrestrial isotope ratios recovered from a crash site in Brazil.
  
  -Historic eyewitness reports from very credible observers are the one thing that still gives me pause. It’s plausible that observing aliens (if here then given what we know of physics most likely AI von-Neumann probes) are very aware of our technology development and are becoming more furtive over time in response, but that seems low probability – unless observing human technology development progress is entertaining/interesting to them.

  When the wife and I lay in the Jacuzzi at night and stare at the multitude of stars/ galaxies we can’t but believe that there is life out there.
  
  It may be very different than life as we know it or it may be much the same as ours, but it would be very difficult to argue that in the billions of galaxies, each having billions of planets, that our planet is the only one supporting life.

New Lynn Murder that was recorded as a covid death. He was on Meth and was shot and had covid.

They tested him for covid at the autopsy even though it is unusual to test for a virus.

“It’s unlikely to have had much of a bearing on his health at the time of his death,” Glenn said of the positive test result, explaining he saw no inflammation in Hart’s lungs.” So he wasn’t actually sick!

We were told this was a covid death and was recorded as such but ““It’s unlikely to have had much of a bearing on his health at the time of his death,”” The pathologist said.

His positive test meant his family couldn’t hold a funeral and had to self isolate!

This death had been recorded as a covid death.

And some people are still defending the statistics and response. Incredible.

Speaker at Probus today was a chubby mid-50s chap who told us some entertaining stuff about Post Offices. Way back when if you lived out in the country and there were three families in the area you could apply to Wellington and get a Post Office.

At rhe end he explained to us that he self-identified as slim which made him trans-slender 🙂

2 very interesting interviews on The Platform with Troy Bowker and Oliver Hartwich about the review the ird did on tax paid by 300 or so rich people in NZ. Seems this invasion of privacy or “research” was a law rushed through before Xmas 2020. Would be interesting to see a copy of the questions asked. Surely no more proof is needed that this is the most dangerous, totalitarian govt NZ has ever had.
