Have a look at the list of extras & remember the next time you hear teachers moaning about their salary. 15 days of sick leave (on top of the school holidays), a week of professional development it’s not clear whether this includes or is additional to teacher-only days) …. the list goes on.

No wonder we’re should of teachers, they’re never at school.

  I know many teachers just doing 4 of 5 days in classroom and school rotates a permanent reliever through on a set day each week. So between that and reducing class size by 20% we need 40% more teachers.

  The article combines kindergarten teachers with primary school teachers which is rather misleading.
  Kindergarten teaching has changed considerably in recent years with the growth in the childcare industry.
  Parents more often need more flexible hours to fit in with their own working hours.
  So potentially longer child contact hours, longer working day, no teacher only days, and often different term-break length.

  It’s not “the Dems,” it’s the Uniparty. There is no meaningful substantive distinction between Congress, the media, the bureaucracy, Big Money etc. – it’s all the same thing. That’s why it is unacceptable for any candidate that is not pre-approved by said Uniparty to be popularly elected, and why nothing is spared to prevent it happening again. Has the GOP ever really stood up for Trump, and have they ever really advanced the interests of most GOP voters over the last 30 years? No and no. Marama Davidson’s reaction: “A full internal investigation has been launched and the party is taking this matter very seriously.”

The Spinoff has (and I’m not making this up) published a “frame-by-frame” analysis of video showing the moment other Green MPs read and reacted to the Whats App chat message.

Meanwhile, less than 2 weeks ago, the same Marama Davidson stated that all the violence in the world comes from cis white men. Notwithstanding the obvious racism and misogyny, she is of course totally wrong. In her own country, the one she declared she is “the prevention violence minister” of, Maori outnumber pakeha in violent crime statistics every single way you can analyse it. In straight numbers, as a percentage of the population, as a per capita percentage, evry way you look at it.

  Classic tactics, “look! A rabbit!”

  As much as it is good to see the Greens have internal problems, it’s a nothing. Keep focused on the big picture. Davidson’s comment last week was racist and it was a provable lie.

  I don’t think the label “crybaby” is even accurate. Due to this fuss I listened to Chloe Swarbrick. I didn’t agree with her content at all but I thought she gave a passionate and eloquent speech which clearly set out her views. She had good expression which made her easy to listen to. I would even call her speech stirring (although it didn’t stir me as I look at the facts from a different perspective to Ms Swarbrick).
  
  To label her a crybaby is very demeaning and disrespectful, with ageist and sexist undertones. It also superbly highlights that age (in Ms Kerekere’s case) does not correlate with maturity.
  
  DPF suggests it was an MP who leaked the text, which has made me wonder; who gains from this and therefore would have leaked it:

The penalty for not accepting the suspension would be serious risk of a low list position, so Marama was able to do it despite not having formal authority.

The media are unsurprisingly pushing the story that Jacinda Ardern has been the country’s greatest ever leader. I think the glorification of her leadership related to the mass murder of 51 people is a bit off. It is a deliberate exploitation of the tragedy by Labour. I give her credit that Covid was an incredibly difficult challenge but feel it was used as cover to push an ideological agenda around Co-Governance that has damaged the country.

  Having said that, I do think an armistice on the current frontline is a future outcome. Though not before both sides try a major summer offensive. Which will probably fail for both sides. Though Ukraine may think it’s new MBT’s may turn the tide. We will see.

    The case of Poland in 1939 is actually very close to Ukraine in 2022: the undemocratic and authoritarian Poland, backed by assurances of military aid by Britain and France (that later proved worthless), obstinately refused to negotiate with the Germans over returning ethnically German Danzig to the Reich, so eventually the Germans were left with no other option than to take it back. The Poles were oppressing and brutalising ethnic Germans living in Danzig, but you never hear about this. An ideal outcome? No, but to deliberately overlook the decades leading up to the event is dishonest.
    
    So yeah, the Germans and now Putin rolled over the respective borders, but it suits the cartoonish narrative in both cases that each leader simply woke up on the wrong side of the bed one morning and–for no reason at all–decided to invade their neighbour because they are a bad person.

        OK Wayne, while you’re still busy preparing your argument as to why the US isn’t primarily responsible for the war in Ukraine, I’ll give my reasons for why the US is the principal responsible party:
        
        The principal US geostrategic interest is in exercising control over Eurasia. This is why they have been consistently expanding NATO right up the Russian border since the 1990s, as well as establishing a network of military bases that nearly surround China. To completely surround China, they need a compliant Russia, and this means overthrowing Putin and installing a puppet regime more along the lines of Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s (i.e. Putin’s predecessor). This gives them Russia’s natural resources, as well as geographical position vis a vis China. So the United States has wanted a conflict with Russia for at least 20 years, and has been consistently laying the groundwork during this time. They wanted to provoke a Russian invasion of Ukraine (Putin having consistently told them that this was his redline), so they acted to facilitate just that, both by installing a US-friendly Ukrainian government in 2014, and then in aiding them in the bombardment of the Donbass, which proceeded right up until March 2022, and advocating for Ukrainian membership of NATO.
        
        The conflict between the United State and Russia, now playing out by proxy in Ukraine, is really about exporting globalism and leftist political orthodoxy to the rest of the world and its corollary of maintaining a unipolar world dominated by the United States. In this schemer, truly sovereign nations like Russia and China are unacceptable. The US has even said that this is the case, when, in March 2022, a month after Russian tanks crossed Ukraine’s borders, the Biden White House summoned America’s “partners” to a civilisational crusade. The administration proclaimed its commitment to those affected by Russia’s recent invasion—“especially vulnerable populations such as women, children, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTQI ) persons, and persons with disabilities.” Because of Western intervention since 2014, Ukraine has been completely transformed into a model globalist country, with all of the rampant progressivism this entails.
        
        Russia clearly sees the war as existential. From Putin’s speech earlier this year: “This means they plan to finish us once and for all. In other words, they plan to grow a local conflict into a global confrontation. This is how we understand it and we will respond accordingly, because this represents an existential threat to our country”. And the West sees a loss as a mortal threat to their hegemony, their globalisation project, and their exporting hardline political correctness to the rest of the world, as has already happened in Ukraine.
        
        The U.S.’s extensive financial sanctions on Russia have had little, if any, cost to Russia, while it has motivated Russia to abandon the U.S. dollar as a mechanism of international trade, which is also something that China views positively. The multipolar world is coming into being and is being expedited by the war in Ukraine. For the Neocons in charge of U.S. foreign policy, it’s an existential moment because their much yearned for unipolar world run by the U.S. may be unravelling.
        
        In a recent UN General Assembly vote calling for an end to the fighting and Moscow’s immediate withdrawal from Ukraine, Russia voted against, while China, India and South Africa abstained. Also, with the recent Saudi-Iran rapprochement along with Syria,the U.S. are looking at an alliance between Russia, China, India, and much of the Islamic world that rejects what the West has become—promoting globalism at the expense of nationalism (i.e. a cadre of Western oligarchs and multinationals, as represented by the WEF, running the world) and pseudo moral crusades at the expense of traditional cultures which are inevitably seen as “backward” and change-worthy by the woke elites running the West.

        Yes, I am aware of Mearshiemer’s view. He is wrong.
        It is an essential NATO interest that Russia not prevail in an aggressive war in the middle of Eastern Europe. This is not Georgia or Armenia. A Russian victory would destabilise entire Eastern Europe.
        In addition Ukraine has shown a determination to staunchly resist Russian aggression. It is not a situation where NATO can walk by and say “nothing to see here”. Not if NATO is to be regarded of any real value to its members, especially those in Eastern Europe.
        The reputation of the US as the leader of NATO would be at stake. It is different to Afghanistan. In the long run NATO has no real interest in Afghanistan, so long as they are not a haven for international terrorists who would launch massive attacks on NATO nations.
        Now I realise that there are apologists for Putin, some commenting here. I guess they are entitled to their views, but I don’t share them. Fortunately, neither does the NZ government. boy present and prospective.

  If you have seen the clip I would have thought it very obvious that Hipkins very clearly did not have preformulated answers. He was thinking through his answer in real time.
  Labour of course will have some sensitivity about trans gender issues. They have actually had a trans gender MP.
  So a Labour person is not going to say a woman is exclusively a person with XX chromosomes. They will, at the minimum, include a person as a woman who has taken the level of steps as Georgina Beyer. These days most people would agree with that. They will generally be treated as a woman. It would be rude to do otherwise.
  It seems to me the issues arise primarily in two areas.
  One, those who haven’t had the surgery. Especially around changing rooms, etc. Two, women’s elite sport. Even those who have had surgery may still have physical advantages around muscle strength. It seems that is being sorted, with stricter rules to ensure a level playing field, so to speak.

  I gave you a thumbs up, but both could be true. One women’s account I listened to on the radio said she kept going into (I think it was) Princes Street to ask the Police to come and help and they didn’t. From the woman’s statement the Police were there next to Albert Park, and there could even have been “additional police staff” as Mr Anderson says. But that doesn’t mean they did anything to prevent violence or protect those being harmed.
  Ms Anderson’s statement could be technically accurate but also an avoidance of the facts.

On the one hand she says

And

“Historically, Māori culture has included more genders than just male and female, and that’s going back a long, long way,” they said.
“Pre-colonisation in Aotearoa, the human rights situation and gender equality was much more advanced than it was in the UK at the time.”

OK. So how did pre colonisation Maori trans rights work? She then goes on to say

The ancient Māori term takatāpui is defined as “an intimate companion of the same sex”. Evidence of diverse Māori sexualities and expressions in pre-colonial Aotearoa have been uncovered in old chants, songs and carvings.

Papahou and wakahuia (carved treasure boxes) usually depict a man and woman intimately intertwined on the lid. But there is one in Auckland Museum that depicts female figures together and another at the British Museum that features men engaging in intimate acts.

What she’s describing is homosexual behaviour. Not trans behaviour. Which seems to undermine her whole argument

  The article also mentions the significant debate happening in the uk over the self Id laws but assures us nothing to worry about here in nz as the legislation went through already with a full consensus.I don’t think many kiwis will be aware of what happened or the specifics of what passed in nz because the media doesn’t cover it. NZers hold their lack of division up believing they are above other countries , but a single unitary vision amongst our parties and a single perspective from our government media is a serious bug in our democracy not a feature.

  Looks like Gender Minorities Aotearoa is exempt from having to declare their committee officers. They didn’t have to file their 2020 or 2021 accounts just declared 2021 152k & 2020 114k of income. And they have not shown their sources of revenue or expenditure, nor their company structure.
  
  This last year their funding doubled. Who funds them in 2022 $360k of income per annum for these paid activist spokespeople. How is the money spent?

So in her closest attempt to define “hate speech” Ardern said it was an statement against a minority to incite violence, and iso n this case is the threat “I will kill them” also a challenge that incites the violent action in “Ha, you have been robbed 13 times now”, and where, if not in reality but still the theory “when you hear it, you will know it” does Ardern’s definition lie?

Why is it so difficult to get a ferry crossing of Cook Strait these days?

In the mid-late 1970s, I regularly travelled back & forth from Wellington to Picton at least once/month for a period of 3 years.
I never had a cancelled ferry… (had a couple of rough crossings).
I think the worst I had to put up with was a delay of a few hours after an incoming ferry had bumped the Picton wharf.

  Easy reason MW.
  
  The ferries were built to NZ Rail specs with input from Masters and Ch Engineers. They were well maintained and did not operate 24 hrs per day.
  
  Now there is only ONE ferry built for NZ Rail and that is Aratere. Bought on the stocks from a Spanish Yard and had rails installed. She arrived and was known as the Aralemon. However since lengthening she seems to be OK.
  
  All the other ferries inc Bluebridge are 2nd hand and some have been uses through multiple different operators in their life time.
  
  The new ferries for NZ Rail should have been on the drawing board 5 years ago and in the water NOW. However the board has to wait for the Min of Finance to sign off the money instead of the board going to the banks and getting the money to build.
  
  I have a horrible suspicion that these huge ferries are not going to be a success and they will have to get a third.

    A marine engineer I was talking to last night said they are so big (50,000 tonnes) that it will be too dangerous to try and pass each other in Tory Channel so they will have to go the long way through Queen Charlotte Sound. Also, with only two of them if one goes down with a problem, capacity will be reduced by half.

    And so they should be. This is the normal procedure in the shipping industry everywhere. At present only relievers travel at the ferry company expense. And that’s why they have permanent shortage of crews. Would you pay $20K per year to get to work?

    1. Old ones. Current tonnage are pre-loved vessels (except Aratere, which was a disaster from the day one) and fairly old at that – the newest vessel, freight-only Valentine is 24 years old.
    
    2. No night sailings in the old days. Currently 24 hours operations (except Valentine).
    
    Bluebridge:
    
    Pretty much the same, all second-hand tonnage. Their newest vessel, Connemara, is 16 years old.
    
    The Ro-Ro vessels, such as ferries, are probably the hardest working ships that there are. The necessity to maintain tight schedules, regardless of the weather and constant cargo operations do not help in maintaining them in their optimal condition.
    Another factor is the length of passage across the Cook Strait – marine engines are generally designed to run at about 90% of their rated maximum continuous load and don’t like frequent load changes, which affect their condition and longevity. In the past, there’s a certain Ro-Ro vessel on the Kiwi coast that had numerous engine breakdowns just for that very reason – due to the vessel’s operational pattern, the main engine had a problem with maintaining correct thermal balance.

I remember when

I watched Minette Batters, President of the National Farmers’Union of England and Wales on ‘Hardtalk’.
The interesting fact is that they are having exactly the same problems that NZ farmers are experiencing.
Difficulty in getting the government to allow sufficient seasonal and worker visa staff into the country.
The use of chemicals, pollution, climate change and their not being allowed to work with members to achieve gradual ongoing fine tuning to overcome these problems.
But perhaps the most important point made was that farming will, over time, become the leader in GHG relief.
Rural land in both NZ and the UK is largely unsuited for anything but farming.

A bit of a – farmers are being asked, and expected, to make massive change WHAT ARE THE REST OF YOU DOING?

    If it helps, when embedding a PDF you need to use the File block from the block editor sidebar. That should let WordPress render the CSS correctly, which I think is the problem as the page renders correctly but because the PDF is slower to appear it flows over top of the content below it.
    
    The File block should fix that.

  Even the cargo-only service is no longer viable. Pacifica Shipping used to run 2 vessels from Wellington to Lyttelton for about 20 years and then the volumes dropped to the point where it no longer paid for itself. Strait Shipping tried it with MV Kent with the same result. There’s another outfit that tried Auckland-Tauranga-Lyttelton run with Ro-Ro cargo vessel. This lasted for about 1 years before collapsing, due to Tranzrail price war.

  Year nine is the old fourth form. In our boys only class in 4th and 5th form two boys specialised in “aroha”. One became a renown interior decorator; the other an extremely proficient women’s hairdresser. They had little “mana” amongst the rest of the class.

  There should definitely be an opt-out option for this bollocks same as for religious studies and other indoctrination classes. I’d be asking that my kids to go to the library and read a book or head outside for some exercise instead.

I’ve been resting between jobs for ten years now.
One of the advantages is not having to take the motor out onto the congested motorways on long weekends.
We have sometimes gone the opposite direction and watched the poor sods stuck in long lines as masses of humanity attempt to get out of the big city all at the same time.
Today due to circumstances we are about to be a couple of those poor sods.
