    I’m doubtful that it’s better because of any advances in morality and ethics inside each of us human beings, although we seem to have been able to act together to produce some societal improvements over time (ending slavery in the West for example), but we still seem to be performing atrocities of different types (sometimes enabled by that new technology). Hence this interesting thought.

        The free market isn’t synonymous with capitalism. Capitalism is really debt-expansion. People habitually cite folksy examples like “your plumber” when they are arguing for capitalism, but Blackrock, JP Morgan Chase and the US Federal Reserve are much better exemplars of capitalism than the local dairy and Bob the Builder.

        They’re inefficient and abusive and able to self perpetuate by impeding entry.
        
        Capitalism needs to be tempered by virtue and charity, neither of which it teaches.

In spring/summer 2023, the virus will probably circulate less. The current virus variants also cause rather mild disease.   If there is any genuine justice in NZ there will be a number of people losing their jobs and having their gongs and awards rescinded.
  I believe for some, legal proceedings and jail time would not be out of the question. There will be provable malfeasance. It might have been stupidity for some, but others were fully aware of the lies they were pushing.

        This is bullshit and I have had enough of this nonsense going unchallenged. This is why I likened it to the moon landing deniers. Amateurs hell bent on pushing their lack of professional knowledge and mocking anyone who disagrees with them.
        A lot of people died until the virus mutated into a less harmful form. I agree now that the more virulent (but less harmful) Omicron variant has become widespread, we are now ‘out of the woods’

    The issue in Switzerland appears to come down to liability. The agreements with Big Pharma absolve them of all liability wrt mRNA jabs. The Swiss Government is only entertaining a “last resort” policy.
    
    In essence they are pushing liability down to the Doctors, who are now the ones who have to decide whether to recommend mRNA jabs or not. Guess what they will do given their exposure to legal redress now.

Will Hipkins just leave it as it is – with the Maori Advisory Council already established with Tipa Mahuta as chair, presiding over Taumata Arowai, the Water Regulator which in turn presides over the “3 Waters” Regional Entities – the level at which “co-governance” occurs, while any idiot can surely see “total governance”, with head position in the pile, and the power of unbridled “Mana o te Wai” Statements – several levels above – is already passed into law?

The clock is ticking. October’s election is just over six months away. But despite the Prime Minister’s assurances in early February that the public would be told in “another couple of weeks” of any changes to Three Waters, he has yet to tell us what his government intends.

On his ascension to higher office, Chris Hipkins promised a reprioritisation of policy — ostensibly to concentrate on “bread-and-butter” issues. However, even Blind Freddie could see the rejig was intended to jettison unpopular policies that had been dragging Labour down in the polls and had helped drive his predecessor, Jacinda Ardern, out of office – Graham Adams

        StHave the tried the HB Racing Club – Cheval Room.
        
        This is a stand alone room on private property and protesters should be able to be kept out on the street which is 50/60 yards away. Surely the police have a role in that.
        
        BTW the Havelock Community lied to me when I phoned to check if the venue was camcelled. They assured me neither they or the District Council have been responsible for the cancellation. Having said that it would be a difficult venure to keep protesters from.

  The current 5-waters legislation will undoubtedly remain until then. Two polls now have the Maori Party with the balance of power.
  
  If the Maori Party still have the balance of power at the election, not only will the Maori water oligarchy remain, it will be inflated to a point where that oligarchy literally have the power of life or death (access to water) over the population.

    We have two choices, vote for Hipkins and Co governance, or Luxon who has bowed to drop three waters and all services will not have separatist policies.
    
    I realise some on here want ACT, but it should be ACT party vote Nats electorate, as ACT will not win another electorate, ACT would go well to look closely at who they stand snd where, two Wellington seats have a drag race between Lab and Greens, if ACT looked st these seats and a few others they to stand down and let Nats come through the middle

We love because He first loved us.

No government policy has as big an effect as the morality of the populace.
The predictions that abandoning Christianity would result in rampant greed, vice, and amorality have been vindicated, IMO.
The alternative predictive frameworks – including those that said we could all get along because we held values of classical liberalism and the institution of free markets – have failed.
In particular, almost every slope that the ‘nuttiest’ fundies said was slippery turned out to indeed be slippery, especially those around sexuality.

Time for a reexamination of where your values come from, centre-right and classical liberal types. The alternatives are wokeness or moral conservatism. The middle ground is dead.

  The problem with ‘moral conservatism’ is the tricky need to specify which morals from which era you wish to be restored. Conservatives tend to oppose any change, but rarely go so far as to advocate for a return to the values as codified in, say. England, 200 years ago.

    But you are right Mike: many so-called conservatives today recoil at transgenderism as going “too far.” In response, they want to rewind the clock to, say, 1990, where they could still freely shag around, get as many divorces as suited them, or even experiment with homosexuality if they felt like it.
    
    But without a moral code and with a permissive “do what you want” liberalism, you’ll always end up with transgenderism sooner or later (and who knows what the future holds), because there is no limiting principle in liberalism that would prevent it.

Nowadays, it would rightly be seen as outrageous for anyone to do this.

  What did those people (of yesteryear) have in common with the “non-conformists of today” (like Chantelle Baker? Or Speak Up for Women? Or Sean Plunket or Peter Williams etc etc)?
  
  They spoke out against the Goverment narrative of the day.
  
  Note “Goverment narrative”, not necessarily “Labour Party”.

New restaurant opened here recently on outskirts of smallish town.
Very popular.
Went there yesterday – it was busy with many people who apparently had a lot money to spend.
Most of the staff – young women- not from these parts.
Seemed to be mainly from South Africa and South America. Friendly, efficient and capable.
English their second language.
Sometimes their accents hard to hear in noisy environment.
They were apologetic for the long waiting time for the meals to come out. We wanted coffees at the end, but coffee making canceled due to not enough staff.
Where were the kiwi workers?
Went to large supermarket on way home – nearly every person working the tills was a young, (probably still at college) woman.
Guess it is easier than waiting on tables.

    As a boomer I would like to say that when I was having babies there was no WFF or anything. Childcare was basically non-existent, never mind susidised, so few mothers could work to help out Times were just as tough. Sure houses were cheaper but they were very basic. Three beds and one bath if you were lucky. No garage or fences or “landscaping”… you got together with your mates and worked the concrete mixer.
    Wages were way lower too. Groceries seemed to take a huge chunk of available funds, and we NEVER went out to eat, or drink. Just neighbourly BYO gatherings. And yes “Ladies a Plate”.

      Relative standards of living, along with NZ’s GDP per capita relative to other ‘developed’ countries, have declined for most people over that time, so that a couple need to work 80 hours to sustain what a family could enjoy from 4o hours’ work.

        I don’t know what you’re meaning by “what a family could enjoy”. Personally I did not enjoy having no floor coverings. And having to buy the cheapest fabric and sew my curtains. Oh, and sew and knit all the family clothes too. Get this too – we didn’t have a car! We did have one “luxury” – a rented tiny B&W TV. Note too that our home didn’t have a skerrick of insulation in the walls or ceiling.

An excellent piece from Graham Adams on why Chris Hipkins won’t mention Three Waters, and why he and Kieran McAnulty are determined not to talk about Te Mana o te Wai statements any time before the October election. They’d far rather you didn’t know that TMOTW statements are edicts that hand direct control over water to iwi.

As former Kaipara mayor Dr Jason Smith put it forthrightly last June on Twitter: “Whoever gets to write Te Mana o te Wai statements gets control of water, land, planning rules and regulations, land use… TMoTW statements will cover every pipe, river, creek, farm pond or fresh water body. Actively excluding around 85 per cent of New Zealand’s people from engaging in a process which affects everyone/every square inch of the land and the salt water many miles out to sea deserves closer examination.

“If Te Mana o te Wai is such an important principle then surely everyone (ngā tāngata katoa) should be able to be involved. So many parts of society actively excluded from participating is unacceptable and unjustifiable.”

Hipkins and McAnulty can only hope the mainstream media remains largely dozy, lazy and uninformed on the role of Te Mana o te Wai statements until the election. For if the general public fully grasp that Māori will be given extensive — and exclusive — rights to direct how water is managed at a local level, the public mood will change from sour to downright septic. In short order, Hipkins’ hopes of re-election will be sunk by a wave of revulsion at such blatantly undemocratic and divisive race-based policy.

We shouldn’t have to rely on independent journalists like Sean Plunket asking Ministers and the Prime Minister the hard questions. Sadly though, our main media outlets are so interconnected with the government that they will do or say nothing to scare the horses.

      Any cession from the Crown will bring in a new Consitution, drafted in Maori, and supported by Geoffrey Palmer.

      As usual, there are many unanswered questions but there is a strong and determined drive toward becoming a Republic.
      IMO, Aust will become a Republic ASAP (their so-called ‘Voice’ legislation will be interesting if it gets up (which I doubt)) and we will Piggy Back of whatever they do but with references to Maori preciousness in every clause of a written Constitution.

    Back then no way would the common Maori people have a say in anything!
    
    So to today and co-governance … logically the end point is powerful Maori tribes asserting their dominance (wherever they have been granted the means to control).
    
    Are we heading back to the pre-colonial days of tribal elitism (with Labour thinking they will sitting at the top table with them)?
    
    If so, how does Labour reconcile the power granted to the tribal elites … and the place of (and needs of) the common (Maori) man and woman?

    15th March I arrived at 6.50 a.m. The plane took off at 10.38 a.m. I had enough time for a cigarette, a hamburger and a cup of coffee. The rest of the 4 hours 48 minutes was spent waiting in queues etc.
    19th March, from when the disembarkation commenced until I got through was 1 hour 38 minutes. Interestingly baggage handling was very good. Customs and immigration had far few staff.
    My wife had seen that sort of incompetence several years ago at Los Angeles.

      However the shiny signs in Te Reo were up nearly everywhere.

      I’m at an age when I’m no longer prepared to run with a pack on my back between the domestic & International airports to catch flights.
      
      So now if I’m travelling or returning from O/S, I have to make a choice of overnighting in Auckland or an O/S country before proceeding onto my destination.
      
      I had the misfortune of arriving back at Auckland one evening when the 2 airport hotels were fully booked…and so I went to one just a few km distant in Mangere…
      
      An experience I don’t intend repeating.

        I was staying in a Motel in Mangere one night awaiting an early flight in the morning and a rucus broke out that involved the Police. The Police knocked on my door and told me to get in my car and eff off. I slept in the car for the rest of the night at one of those Park & Fly places.

    However this place is a major piece of infrastructure which handles thousands of people per day.
    
    If is furthermore the first and typically the last impression a lot of people have of New Zealand (tourism is one of the countries biggest industries).

        It’s the security screening running at half capacity , yet staffed with over zealous people with a power complex.
        
        As an aside, how many times has an aviation threat been avoided by their actions? None, I’d say. As opposed to letting wanted criminals on board…
        
        Then it’s the border clearance, also running slow because some nonce doesn’t know they need to have their passport and boarding pass available.
        
        All increased by orders of magnitude by the sheer numbers.
        
        Christchurch is still annoying, especially security, but the volume is less so…

  AIAL is about the worst-run company in New Zealand. Totally focused on being a property developer and on over-charging for (near monopoly) carparking. Totally inept at their supposed core business of running an airport. Totally captive to a mindset of distributing the monopoly profits as dividends to shareholders rather than on re-investing in their infrastructure. I have long been a supporter of looking after Veterans. I have seen how some just can’t cope, end up homeless and addicted, and with no real way to recover. An outfit in New Hampshire US helps Vets to cope with recovery. PTSD is a big thing. It is run by Mike Rivers (DV6) who was once addicted, homeless and suffered from PTSD. Now he runs Dysfunctional Farm, a place for Vets to come for help. Suicide prevention is big. The Vets lose a lot. You can follow them on social media and there is a store.
The US Govt does not care for Vets very much. Trump is big on this. Vets gave their Service and sometimes there lives for Freedom.

    Yes the difference in treatment between the two world wars was stark.
    WW1 – medals inscribed with the recipients name and service number was issued to all service men and women, even those deceased.
    The families of those killed were issued with a bronze plaque about 6 inches in diameter, along with a scroll of appreciation.
    Servicemen were also issued with a certificate of service
    WW2 – medals struck but not issued unless requested. They were simply posted out and were not enscribed with number, names etc.
    I’m not aware that any scrolls or plaques were issued to deceased soldiers, nor certificates of service.
    WW2. Medals are still able to be requested by the families even now. They eventually turn up in the post.

    Last night “news” carried the story and said some 100,000 were entitled to the awards .I’d have thought more were.Could be wrong on both counts , happy to be corrected.
    
    Here the article says 20ooo didn’t get them. That makes an 80 % uptake .Which is not low.
    
    Yet the article says ;
    “According to my research, around 75 per cent of New Zealand Army and Royal New Zealand Air Force veterans refused to apply for their Second World War campaign medals in the first few years after distribution began in March 1950.”

      The articles quotes pretty directly from the latest research – from two very careful and meticulous historians.
      I especially enjoyed the bit where the Navy veterans had a very high rate of ‘applying’ for their medals, as it was linked to them claiming their share of prize money!
      Allied to this, most veterans had no trouble in getting their substantial gratuities, for which they also had to ‘apply’.

        I am very proud to have my maternal grandfather’s medals from WW I – he landed on Galipoli on the first day in 1915, and never came home till late 1917 after he was wounded a Paeshedaelle – he joined as a private, and came home a 2nd. Leutenant.
        I am also very proud to have my father’s medals from WW II – even though he had 2 children & was a member of the NZTF from 1936, he embarked in 1943 for Maardi Camp in Egypt and was in the landing on the Italian east coast joining the drive up through Faenza & Rimini to the Po valley. He was in the 27 Machine Gun Battalion, and badly damage his back, & came home on a hospital ship in early 1945 .

    Not all veterans look at their time in uniform the same way.
    
    Some look back on it fondly – a time of camaraderie that they have never experienced since.
    Some look back at it with horror and PTSD.
    Some are rather indifferent and just want to put it in a box and forget about it.

  I think the Democrats think their best possible opponent is Trump. Based on the midterms they might be right. On the other hand they might be wrong.
  It seems now clear that Trump will be the Republican nominee. Hard to see anyone else appealing to the Republican base at this stage.
  So even if Trump starts from behind, if he is the nominee, he has at least a 40% chance of being the next President. Steve of course would say Trump is a shoo in, but he also thought that in 2020.

    There’s no way that Trump will be allowed to win, even if he is the nominee. As long as mail-in ballots are a universal option, then there will never be another “straight” US election ever again. They cannot allow a popular and unapproved candidate to claim victory as happened in 2016 (and 2020, if we are honest).
    
    Trump’s greatest achievement is the seeds he has sown – the curtain has been pulled-back on the completely corrupt rape and pillage of America by a hostile elite, and new generations of Americans have woken up to this fact. What was once unsayable even 4 or 5 years ago is now being said and understood by the Zoomers and Millennials. Many Boomers still don’t really get it, but the younger generations will have it so bad now and in the future that political change will be forced out of necessity.

  The crime stats aren’t looking too good for a particular group. I propose the action of teaching judges addition, it appears as though they gave up on MATH after attaining a mastery of subtraction and it’s all they employ in sentencing decisions. Grant Robertson seems to have the opposite problem regarding budgeting considerations and consumption of an appropriate number of bakery items per day so perhaps they can pull their heads out for some much needed oxygen, put them together and teach each other.

It is obvious, backed by millennia of evidence that babies are not playthings and are best raised in a stable family environment with a father and a mother.

Now the elite determined to wreck every tradition, contradict every well established truth in history and especially violate anything of Judeo-Christian origins are adapting law and regulation to allow anyone to raise a new baby, on their own or as same sex. In fact there is tacit encouragement for such activity.

  I know a gay male couple with a two year old daughter. I have no idea who is the biological mother. This couple has considerable resources and clearly love the child. Babies produced on order for single gay men I am much less comfortable with.

Luke Malpass at the Herald ran a prebunking article informing us that this election will not be about “imported culture wars” despite that bad Sean Plunket asking “what is a woman?” And those pesky feminists importing Posie Parker to speak.

Malpass said “there appears no real appetite among elected officials to get into a culture war on this issue leading into the election.” Gender is simply a non issue.

Yet that is not true. it appears Auckland council has in the works a “ free “ 9 day festival organised answering that very “what is a woman?” culture wars question called “HER STORY” for everyone who identifies as a woman.

“This brand new free nine day festival promises significant events, unique experiences, talks, workshops, sports, theatre, art and conversations presented across Tāmaki Makaurau.“

“* For every woman, femme queen, AFAB, butch, cis, demi girl, feminine, femme presenting, gender fluid, trans women, women of colour, young women, old women, BBWOC, Indigenous terminology femme identities, mothers, queer women, women who can’t have children, women who don’t want children, women who haven’t even started on their journey, and all those in between. It’s pretty rich calling it a culture war when one side is armed with all the money, power and protection of the state and the other side is a couple of concerned local women who organise a speaker who shares their concern to speak in a local park.

I’ve been reading “The Earth Transformed,” by British historian Peter Frankopan, a sweeping study of global history from the appearance of life on earth until the present. Understandably, given the scope of the subject matter, this country crops up from time to time in the text. It is invariably referred to as “New Zealand (Aotearoa)” I expect that this is an increasingly common practice worldwide, and one which the bitter old dinosaurs who frequent this blog can do nothing to prevent or reduce.

  For the record, I’m pretty ambivalent on the name of our country and I’m not sure why that is the case – I suppose it’s because I think we have bigger fish to fry.
  
  What I will say though is overwhelmingly historical research concludes that Aotearoa was never the name of this country. At best it was a name used by some tribes for the North Island, only. So for those who push the line that Aotearoa was the original name of this country are either quite wrong or deliberately lying.
  
  Either way, it is no way for a government to force a name change on an unwilling populace ie. through ignorance or deliberate deceit.
  
  No wonder New Zealanders resent it.

Vernon Small, former press secretary to Labour Minister David Parker, opens fire at Stuff, which announces he will now be a regular Sunday columnist.

Small makes the astonishing statement praising Labour’s:

… strong economic performance over the past five years, be it low unemployment, lower government debt, and better growth, than in comparable countries …

Vernon, tell us about the Social Credit-style money printing through bond issues, setting off inflation. Tell us about the Covid economic shut down, a disaster compared with the work-on policies of countries including Sweden and Taiwan. Tell us about Three Waters and racial separation.

The column’s theme likely signals a new and desperate Stuff defence line for Labour.

This is, convince voters that inflation’s an illusion and they are in fact in an economic boom.

Divert them from soaring violent crime, from a crashing education system, from water nationalisation, from splitting the country into two race-based systems – which language-change bombardment reminds them of daily, if not hourly.

Vernon Small is a former chess star, a grand master and NZ representative, and he has a Ph.D. in English. After being a reporter at the Christchurch star, he spent a long spell in the Parliamentary press gallery before becoming a press secretary.

The Vernon Small problem for Stuff and Labour is that he’s a good bloke, too decent to deliver political propaganda convincingly.

And the launderette has been taken to the cleaners!
I didn’t mention anything to the washing machine as she puts a different spin on everything.
Certainly not to the fridge as he is acting cold and distant.
In the end the iron calmed me down as she said everything will be fine, no situation is too pressing.
The vacuum cleaner was very unsympathetic… told me to just suck it up, but the fan was more optimistic and hoped it would all soon blow over!
The toilet looked a bit flushed when I asked its opinion and didn’t say anything but the door knob told me to get a grip.
The front door said I was unhinged and so the curtains told me to pull myself together…….”

I wonder whether at any time Robertson, Ardern, Peters, Hipkins et al have ever stopped to wonder that removing the Reserve Bank’s singular focus on keeping inflation in check wasn’t such a good idea after all:
