      Who-ever takes over the cafe will have to start from scratch. There wont be any equipment, staff or stock in trade as it will all have been sold. It will be costly from the outset. Especially if the place has been empty for 6-7 months.

  As the report notes, the current licencee has opted not to retender. If their track recorded is as described then they would stand a good chance of selection.
  
  Given that they have chosen to walk away, it’s a moot point as to whether they would have been unsuccessful. Any suggestion that the local iwi would inevitably have been selected ahead of the current licencee is racist speculation.

    I would have thought that given their excellent track record that would have stood a reasonable chance of being successful. It’s far easier to keep a successful operation running from DOCs perspective than to start a new one from scratch.

  If you lease premises or have concession for a finite period you cannot complain if you are not granted a renewal. Hopefully DOC has not been informally telling people bidding for concessions that a roll over is likely if the concession is successful. Similarly the person who sold the concession mid term was not implying that renewal would be a formality. If the written concession agreement is for 15 years with nothing mentioned about renewal you plan to close down and vacate after 15 years. If you snare a new lease that is your good luck.
  In fairness to DOC, they have to put a finite period on concessions. Changing circumstances mean that it could be appropriate for a concession or camping ground not to exist indefinitely.
  It is amazing that small business people are caught out with this time and again. Seems they do not get proper advice. It is not the first time that this sort of thing has happened and will not be the last.

Here we are at Easter and did Chris Luxon go to church? Don’t know. Doesn’t mention it on his Facebook feed. But what he did do was promise to change the Easter trading laws, no doubt to open up Easter to trading and further diminish the status of Easter as special days.

It’s like when John Key allowed homosexual marriage to go through under his watch. And the anti smacking bill to go through. And Rob Muldoon was PM when the gates were opened to abortion in 1977.

What’s wrong with National Party leaders? They never fail to disappoint.

        G. Also ridiculous some years ago it was raining on a Good Friday, I had a bored kid in the house so I said “let’s go the movies”. It was only when we got to the mall that I connected it was Good Friday and shops were closed. However the movies were open, because they’re not retail. Labour likes to say that we should support the worker’s rights to have a day off to spend with their families and it’s only a couple of days a year. I don’t actually have an issue with that, and I don’t care if shops are closed for occasional days, but why does the retail shop worker deserve to have a day with family, but the movie worker doesn’t?
        Or apparently retail in “tourist” areas are allowed to open – why does a regular retail worker deserve a day off but the tourist retail worker doesn’t?
        It’s the inconsistencies and exceptions that make the current law ridiculous.

      I quite like having a period with the shops closed. Easter is a great time to catch up with friends & family, hold regional & national tournaments & meet ups etc.
      
      It’s also reflective of our Judeo-Christian heritage that, like it or not, defines who we are as a country (bearing in mind that recent arrivals chose to come here because of the good things that spring from that heritage).

        I reject the term “Judeo-Christian.” Most religious Jews today revere the Talmud, not the Torah of the Old Testament.
        
        In fact, to be a Jew post-Christianity is, by definition, to reject Jesus Christ as the messiah who fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament. Islam reveres Jesus more than Judaism does. Catholicism and Judaism are thus antithetical and antagonistic. A new covenant was made with Jesus, and so the “chosen” Jews of the pre-Christian era are no longer chosen. It’s far more accurate to say ours is a Christian heritage, without adding the Judeo as a modifier.

    This sums up perfectly why the nominal right consistently lose (even if they “win”). This principle goes far beyond the particular issue of gay marriage – how about if you don’t agree, then you don’t allow it, because you think it’s wrong? To legislate anything is to legislate morality, because it is a matter of “this is right” or “this is wrong.”
    
    It’s just a completely weak and nihilistic cop-out to say “if it doesn’t effect me, then I don’t care” because when you live in a society, everything effects everyone else. Unless you live by yourself on a desert island, then you stand in relation to others, and everyone effects everyone else. Somethings are right, and somethings are wrong.
    
    Taken to a logical extreme, if everyone decided to get gay married, the society would end within a 100 years due to the absence of procreation.

    And didn’t we have a referendum on ‘smacking’ which John Key ignored? (Luckily his proposed ugly bodge for a new flag, got rejected by the country.)

      if you truly believe in the religious position you take (whether it is Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Atheism etc.) then it should be an integral part of your worldview and the decisions you make and opinions you express.
      
      As a Christian, I have more respect for someone of a different faith who is honest about it forming his worldview etc., than a fellow Christian who tries to keep it separate.

  Bugger off, Easter trading laws are archaic, when I have been over seas businesses are all open, pubs are open, cafes are open, but those who choose to have a holiday do so. It won’t be compulsory to open, and staff will get the option, but in those types of businesses like cafes snd bars they will be itching to get double time and a day in lieu

    I tend to agree G from Dunedin keeping Christian holidays in a multi faith country that has a majority Christian tradition makes sense if those of us that don’t want to or aren’t as religiously invested in the holiday don’t have restrictions imposed on us . Those that want to solemnly observe the day are welcome to but the Muslim or Jew, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and atheist can take a less solemn position and do what we would. Thus preserving the Christian holiday for the devoted. I think it’s a pretty good compromise.

      Personally not worried, will just increase the rents again, and fortunately have room for the increase to cover the big rates increase on my own place in a rather leafy Wellington suburb. All good then.
      
      Of course that’s what happens to rents when costs increase, as long as demand exceeds supply. Also of course, supply may exceed demand after October as public sector layoffs bite. Bring it on.

      Probably most of the statistics they keep such as – all cause mortality, cancers, auto-immune diseases, blood dyscrasia, cardiac disease, miscarriages, congenital abnormalities, etc. All those sort of things proper testing of drugs should identify.

  I did what I thought was right, and got the two shots, but since having covid March last year I have refused any boosters, she can open her mouth and let the wind blow her tongue around, but she can take a hike, work did not sack people for not being jabbed, so stuff them.
  
  I have been around people who have had covid since I had it, but no re infection, so clearly there is some immunity, likewise at the home where my mother is, she got COVID and so did 3 others, but no one that got it earlier got re infected

    The difference in duration of protection is because of the different infection paths.
    
    The immune system basically resides in the blood, lymph system and bone marrow.
    
    Infections that take place deep in the lungs or in the blood have contact with the blood and the lymph systems – so they quickly encounter the immune system and typically don’t have time to get established before they are under attack. And the blood/lymph protections tend to be strong and long-lasting. For example, protection against measles.
    
    Infections that take place in the upper respiratory tract (Covid, other coronavirus-related headcolds, flu) encounter the saliva-ry type secretions in the nose and throat, but don’t encounter the blood or lymph systems. Those upper respiratory tract secretions don’t have a strong immune system response. The secondary infections often go deeper into the body, and only then properly encounter the immune system … but by then the primary infection is well established and under way.
    
    That’s basically why immunity against Covid, headcolds and flus is so difficult, and why you have annual flu shots for example. The immune response in the upper respiratory tract is weak and short-life.

        Yes I have. IgA is the key immune system defence in the upper respiratory tract. There’s always a small amount present there, but in the event of an infection it takes time (days to a few weeks) for the body to ramp up production to really fight the infection.
        
        That’s been one of the key aspects of Covid deaths in older people – that ramp up takes longer the older you get (and the weaker your immune system is) which allows the virus to replicate quickly and overwhelm the immune system while it’s still gearing up.
        
        But, back to what I said earlier … vaccines are injected into the muscle (ie the blood). They’re great at stimulating immune responses in the blood, but it’s harder to get the immune message through to the mucosal membranes. Hence vaccines tend to give weak and short protection against upper respiratory tract infections.

        Also, when you do have Covid, or a vaccination (ie a weak dose of Covid) you get that burst of IgA (and other antibodies) being made which fights the infection. Those hang around for a while (months- ish) but then die off. The immune responses in the upper respiratory tract die off quickly, and fall back to that low-level maintenance amount. Which is another way of saying that the strong level of immunity doesn’t last long. That’s not the vaccines fault – it’s just the way that part of the immune system works.

        Actually you didn’t. Your description is not very accurate. There’s a lot more to it and places the immune system resides. Professor Robert Clancy, a retired immunologist and one who was at the cutting edge of the work done on IgA in the ’70’s gives 2 very good talks on the immune system on Dr John Campbell’s YouTube. The second one is on IgA. You should probably give it a listen if you want to pontificate on mucosal immunity.

        Clearly my posts are high-level summaries of what is a very complex immune system response. I’m not trying to write a scientific paper, or appeal to a scientific audience. I’m trying to distill the key essence into a few sentences of conversation.
        
        But the key essence of what I put forward still stands:
        (1) Vaccines don’t stimulate as strong or long-lasting an immune response in the upper respiratory tract as they do in the blood and lymph systems.
        (2) Immune responses in the upper respiratory tract fade faster than do immune responses in the blood and lymph systems.
        
        Those are two pragmatic reasons why flu or Covid vaccines (and equally infections) don’t confer the long-lasting protection you see from, for example, measles vaccines. Which was the focus of my response to Widogast Corwin.

      Yes, but it was an extremely strong cyclone, wind was huge, the sand swept the paint off the seaward side of the ambulances, it sand blasted the sand completely off, so I guess the city would have had damage and road closures, so much for the recent cyclone being the worst

  A very sad anniversary. It made me think about how things have changed for the better with regard to safety. Today ferry sailings are cancelled and ports are closed. The Master of the Wahine Hector Gordon Robertson was hung out to dry by the Union Company and the Wellington Port. The harbour should have been closed but pressure was on to maintain the schedule and a ships Master is ultimately responsible. I had the privilege of sailing with Hector after this tragedy a gentleman and great ship handler. Unfortunately he recieved a lot of abuse on the anniversary. You could see it was killing him. It should not be forgotten everybody was successfully evacuated from Wahine. The loss of life occurred on the beaches. Our thoughts should be with the victims and their families but another victim was the Master. RIP

    Colville, my aunt and uncle werent that lucky, they were in a lifeboat that was hit by a rescue boat, flipping the lifeboat over with the passengers ending up in the water, my uncle drowned whilst my aunt wearing her life jacket remained in the water for four hours before the tide carried her across the harbour to the rocks of Pencarrow where she was finally retrieved, battered and bruised by two police officers and she then spent some time in Hutt Hospital. Of course when the passengers were ordered to abandon ship, with the Wahine badly listing, they could only access lifeboats on the lower side of the vessel meaning many passengers only option was to jump into the rough waters and hope for the best.

  @Chuck. Hipkins is the epitome of a poll enslaved, populist, void of principle, addicted to power. He was hesitant to answer the question on what is a woman because he had to try and figure what would be the answer that would be expected, that would yield the most support among his base voters. That instead of being honest, factual and principled.
  
  That the MSM have largely let him away with stopping progress on the many law changes he was heavily involved in and subscribes to just to try and arrest the slide in Labour’s popularity is reprehensible. He is as shallow as a pavement puddle.
  
  The question is, “do we have principled politicians any more”? Luxon, once a conservative church-going Christian is happily backtracking on key moral issues to a point where we are not sure what he stands for any more. Seymour has even been guilty of a bit of popularism over principle too, although it is far more evident what he stands for.

      I might add that if a trans-man was a member of my social groups (I am yet to have that pleasure) but who sort of ‘threw their weight around’ and claimed to be a bloke, wanted to be treated as a bloke, claimed that they knew what it’s like to be a bloke etc etc etc I think three things would be observed:
      
      1. The blokes in my circles would be unfailingly polite and courteous in response.
      
      2. The degree to which the trans-man would be accepted into my circles would be determined almost exclusively by how good they were to be around, their camaraderie and good humour and willingness to work in our shared endeavours.
      
      3. They absolutely would not ever be fully accepted as a bloke, they would always be regarded as a woman living as a bloke.
      
      I wonder what proportion of New Zealand woman would act and feel the same way, with a trans-woman, but in reverse?

The question I’d really like answered is, will anyone lend to an entity that could have its entire operation shut down on the whim a third party that has no expertise, ownership interest or accountability at all?
  
  And co-governance is not something we’re supposed to be scared of. Why I shouldn’t be scared when our current system of government is replaced by one no-one can explain is a mystery to me. Seems like exactly the situation in which a reasonable person ought to be very scared.

    They have achieved their aim then.
    
    Te Mano o te Wai is the “mana” or power of water. This concept is declared to be “at the heart of the new system” and the new entities will have to give effect to it “as articulated by mana whenua” – being the local Maori of the area. The new entities will be obliged also to fund and support this participation.
    
    Maori living outside their ancestral area will not have special status in the places where they live, though presumably could, through their tribal associations, influence what happens in the area where their tribe is dominant.
    
    While there is a requirement for co-governance at Regional Representative Group level, and for the Water Service Entity boards to have at least some members with “kaitiakitanga, tīkanga and mātauranga” Māori experience in water delivery, I can’t see anything about conflict of interests where, for example, a Maori group has a commercial interest in water use, or is in competition with other users, but has the power to issue Te Mana o Wai directives.

I remember when

English department at a local high school have been sorting through their storage space.
In the process they have found some writing done by previous classes about 10 years ago.
They were amazed at the standard, knowledge and the depth displayed.

Can anyone help? I’m totally bewildered by the polls which show labour/greens having an actual shot at the election this year. I don’t associate with many people that would contemplate voting for them, so find the apparent lack of ability to connect the dots around so many failures very bewildering.
I genuinely would like to know, what is the thinking that leads so many people to think that labour/greens and god forbid the maori party, deserve another shot at government??
I figure if I understand the thinking, I can at least mount an argument against it.

  For those who voted Ardern last Election to now change and vote for another party, may involve a process of admitting to themselves that they made a mistake last time. That could result in giving Hipkins a chance as an untested PM, whereas he is in tact, through Cabinet and ranking, as responsible as Ardern for Labour’s non-delivery of almost everything but “3 Waters” and societal division.
  So meanwhile they screw with the polls (which aren’t really the Election) rather than screw with your own brain?

  1. Criminals. Less likely to be jailed. More likely to be released.
  
  2. Unecessary bureaucrats. There are tens of thousands of them and they know it. One of Chippies first acts was to publicly state how he remembered the pain of the public service lay-offs under Douglas and how that would never happen under him.
  
  3. Beneficiaries. Regular increases in payments are more likely under Labour. Especially important when everything is getting so expensive.
  
  4. Media. Largely funded by the government now.
  
  5. Consultants. The country may collapse but they’re getting rich.
  
  Say what you like about Labour, but they know how to dramatically increase the number of people who are dependent on the state and therefore will likely vote Labour.

He made the comments on a podcast with Max Key last month while speaking about Covid-19 conspiracy theories.

Seymour assured people Ardern couldn’t have been part of one because she was “too dumb” and would “screw it up”.

On reading this Tweet from Jeremy Clarkson, I just realised where 3 Waters fits in – it’s a combination of the globalist agenda to mess up, and then centrally control agriculture and the food supply, using (in New Zealand) the support of the Maori “elite” to get the legislation in place.

        2017 is very recent history**. The grudge that Nat stalwarts have against him goes way, way back to the early 90s, which is just about the same time they took agin ACT.
        
        I know what Peters is, and where he comes from. But when the man is right, he’s right. And he’s often right, a bit like Trump. The problem is that many Old Guard Nats have Peters Derangement Syndrome which prevents them from seeing the forest for the trees, or perhaps the trees for the forest. Take your pick.
        
        Interestingly enough, perhaps ironically, Peters falling out was over his disagreement with Ruth Richardson’s economic program. He called it Ruthenasia. Got him sacked. And yet for many years now Richardson’s approach has most certainly been disavowed by National, if not by word then certainly by deed, which makes them, along with Peters, idiots.
        
        **It was all Peters’ fault, was it? Nothing to do with English and his Nats and their loathing for him? Forest, trees.
        
        Now, back to ACT and those stolen votes…

      Mitchell did not attend the protest, but said the fact a protester poured tomato juice on Keen-Minshull showed a failure from police.

    Even if the failure was 50/50, which it probably was, it just goes to show where decades of personal antipathy gets you. It makes you look stupid, outsmarted by a lank-haired former Socialist Youth leader who according to David Seymour ain’t the sharpest knife in the drawer.

The Stop Co-Governance Havelock North venue. Looks like a venue was cancelled so they are still looking. TBC = to be confirmed. The actual venue location will be posted the day before. This is so protesters have less time to organise.

We have removed reference to our venues so that they don’t have to endure weeks of harrasment from protestors. We will put the venue and address on the website and advise everyone who is regsitered for the event 12 – 24 hrs out from the event happening.

Regarding ‘Paul the other one’, I’ve just checked out his video. His vitriol, for the most part, is no worse than what many other haters are spouting, although the fact he calls for the attendees of the Orewa event to be thrown off a bridge is justification enough for blocking him.

Thanks very much for the heads up on this kind of thing.
