Broadcasting Minister Willie Jackson cites ‘no trust’ in defence of public media entity
Jackson has been repeatedly questioned at Parliament this week by the National Party over the proposal to fold TVNZ and RNZ into one entity.
He defended the shake-up yesterday, saying it was necessary because the public’s view of the media had changed.
“The reality is we want TVNZ to work in tandem with us – and they’re doing that – because New Zealand has changed. We have no longer a trust in national media
[No shit, Sherlock – who the hell did that with $55 million “for an observe the Treaty caveat”?] – no longer is there a trust in what’s happening at a national media level,” he said [so the funding was never “Covid relief” as initially but erroneously claimed].
“We need a trusted public broadcaster because national identity is incredibly important and no longer do people trust New Zealand television or New Zealand radio.“

But following below is a Newsroom article link to Jackson’s “Plan B”, however placing the copied article into TextEdit and asking it to find the word “trust”, reveals zilch – nothing –

During question time in Parliament last week, when asked what more he was doing to strengthen public media, Jackson said he was going to “sit down with Simon and the National Party mates over there.” He was referring to TVNZ CEO, and former National Party minister, Simon Power.
Jackson said he wanted TVNZ to play a more active role in public broadcasting and, “we are going to traverse things with Simon in terms of a way forward.” …

Power recently announced his resignation and will leave TVNZ in June. With many of the TVNZ board, including its influential chair, Andy Coupe, likely to retire or be replaced in the next month, Jackson will, in reality, be sitting down with a new board and CEO to discuss his public media ambitions for TVNZ.

So orienting his first position around trust, but not mentioning it second time around, while Jackson was both times reported for what he said in Parliament, when he is not to lie or mislead, means perhaps you can now have less trust in state broadcasting – RNZ and TVNZ – and Jackson, than you did first up when Jackson insisted failing trust was a problem.

And maybe “trust” is the wrong word, now that Labour hopes their state broadcasters in Election year will only print “trustworthy” issues about them, and perhaps there was enough flack with Plan A. that Willie Jackson now realises merging two entities he said were untrusted, would produce nothing but a larger entity to be less trusted?

  Who is “we”? Does he speak for the Labour Party here, or the New Zealand Government? Both interpretations are frightening.
  
  I, taxpayer and citizen, do not want the media to “work in tandem” with any political party or government. Not now, then or ever. I want them to report what is happening – to tell me what I cannot be there to see or hear myself. I do not need them to tell me what to think of it, or how to feel about it; I can think and feel for myself.
  
  The only condition under which taxpayers should be funding media is one of strict media neutrality. Not one of hidden agreement to promote a specific political agenda.

    The “political agenda” at the moment is the Treaty of Waitangi, but that was a “slim few papers” in 1840, grew substantially in the 1970s – 90s, an now is a “bulging volume”, and still evolving as a “living document”, rather than the bloody badly worded real-estate agreement that it was.

  I have now read The New Puritans and Cynical Theories and understand what we are up against better.
  
  We were lucky: being called conspiracy theorist, nazi and white supremacist, etc. is at the polite beginning. We weren’t beaten, incacerated or killed.
  
  Kelly-Jay and her supporters were beaten by the mob simply for wanting to say they don’t want men in their changing rooms.
  
  Thirty years ago I thought Post Modernism was too glib and too stupid to worry about. One more thing I was wrong about!
  
  I doubt these monsters know the theory they spout, but there is no reasoning with them. Scott Adams suggests we just clap them and rate them on their performance, e.g. I thought Marama Davidson’s performance on cis white men was a 9 out of 10.

      It should be front page news. But, of course, it expsoes not just the politicians but the media too.

        I’m disappointed that our captains of industry have stood by and allowe the corruption of our media to continue unabated. Putting money towards A national media outlet which Tells the truth must surely be one of the most lucrative investments in NZ.
        
        Why won’t NZ politicians commit to investigating the lies and deceit of other NZ politicians? It looks feels and smells of corruption.

        I’ve been very hard on Medsafe as they are responsible for the safety of therapeutic agents for NZ residents. Thomas Cranmer has shown that they tried to stop the roll out of the vaccine on safety and efficacy issues. They could have tried harder but who would have broadcast their message?

  kk – I think we’re definitely at that stage, the information war is over. Every aspect of the covid nonsense from masks to “vaccines” has been proven to be an abject failure.
  The propaganda war is a different matter. That is ongoing and those driving it have deep access to the taxpayer pocket. Hence Te Puna Matatini and ‘The Disinformation Project’ and the government controlled mainstream media.
  
  Memes are the best way to ridicule these people while getting the same information across. Exposing these charlatans.

  – Dr Fauci and his cronies admitted covid may have leaked from a Wuhan lab.
  
  – Covid vaccines don’t 100% prevent the virus.
  
  – Masks and lockdowns did not prevent the spread of the virus.
  
  – Ongoing annual boosters would be required for years to come.
  
  – Unvaxxed people will lose their jobs and treated as enemies of the state — remember Jacinda?

    I can remember as a very very junior medical-scut-monkey in training, having to read faxes from Fauci which told us that above all else, we should not absolutely never stop gay people from having promiscuous sex in bathhouses because that would be judgemental and would not solve the spread of AIDS.
    
    Within a few years, many many tens of thousands of people who were dependent on blood products – like haemophiliacs – died from AIDS, because we didn’t want to test gay people donating blood for carrying the virus, because that would be judgemental.

  I love the bit in there ,from their briefing paper about overseas influences , esp American and what they describe as “anti mask” rhetoric .
  
  Here’s a quote from early March 2020 in the Herald from avery prominent , oft quoted , media darling NZ scientist , prior to the regime draconianism and lockdowns;
  
  “……the public didn’t need to be buying up large on face masks.Most people don’t know how to wear them.What tends to happen with people who aren’t used to wearing a mask is they fiddle with them and then you have a much higher chance of eventually infecting yourself………she warned that seeing people walking around with masks could be contributing to more hype.”

    Clan, people already are. It is called home schooling. The levels of home schooling has been increasing in recent years in some areas at alarming rates.
    
    Reasons for it vary from poor teaching and curriculum subject teaching, to parents not giving a dam as to what level of education a child receives. While some children do receive a better level of education, many do not, and there is no standard of measurement until the child shows up at a tertiary institution or seks employment.

      hullkiwi – we took our daughter out and homeschooled during covid, when the masks were being demanded in schools and pressure to vaccinate became unbearable. We will do it again without batting an eyelid.
      She just hit intermediate age and we really wanted that interaction with others her own age during these formative years. But we are keeping an eye on the curriculum and the messaging that is coming out of the school very, very closely.
      
      She’s a very bright kid and fully understands and agrees with the decisions we’ve made so far.

        Clan, our son (now Yr 9) was at a rural primary school. A disaster, despite the school being a decile 9, the school was poorly resourced, the teachers were generally poor, and discipline was a joke, our son was being bullied (as were other children) by a girl from a dysfunctional family. So, we took him out at the end of term 3 2019. Initially, we planned to home school, but he wanted to try another school, so he is now at a Christian Preference School at Snells Beach. He needs the social interaction also. However, 2020, brought the lockdowns (which have done more damage to children than the authorities have ever cared to discuss), our son by the end of 2021 was desperate for the school environment.
        
        What we’ve seen in terms of teaching, the curriculum, and the resources available to state schools in Rodney, it is no surprise that parents resort to home schooling. However, the big variable factors become the ability/capability of the parents to teach & whether the parents are taking the time to teach.

“Play City?” – This is what Christchurch City Mayor Phil Mauger wants to Re Brand Christchurch as.

Is this really what Christchurch residents want Christchurch city to be known as? Has Phil got his priorities all messed up? Easy for life to be “All about play” for the rich and comfortable who can AFFORD to play, and pay for the big tickets at CHCH New multi-million dollar Stadium being built. Im sure Phil will enjoy his Box office seat, most likely… Phil, most Cantabrians want decent roads, a place to park at the hospital, rates bills that are manageable, health access, and their freedom and rights, to be represented not ignored for PC guano. This is what is the priority for those ‘at the top’ who have lost touch with the everyday person, their needs and wants. Play that cost $$$ is a luxury for those who are doing quite well thank you very much. They can afford the steak dinners, the tickets to the shows and events.

  Yes, and did you see the filler piece on the news last night about New Brighton?
  
  In short, 50 years ago New Brighton was the happening place in Chch, the only suburb with Saturday shopping etc. Then the 1980s happened & Saturday shopping everywhere, the 1990s extended shopping to 7 day shopping. Now New Brighton is a derelict dump with a concrete pier built in the 1990s. Fear not for New Brighton, the Councillors & the local business community have a plan. They will get grants (from everywhere including the post earthquake, rebuild Chch fund) and build a bright new city centre with a live stage etc at a cost of several $million. All New Brighton parties are singing the praises of the scheme.
  
  Sorry to be a nay sayer, and having seen many of these redevelopment schemes become a monumental waste of money, who am I to tell these people that they are going to waste public money for the benefit of a few shop keepers (for a while). I say this because these schemes always follow the same pattern.
  
  1. The town centre is dead and people don’t come to shop.
  2. Local businesses engage Councillors (who are all to eager to spend public money on redeveloment)
  3. Money is spent;
  4. People still don’t come.
  
  Why
  Because the general population have limited time on their hands, so,
  1. they prefer to shop in one place, where they can park the car etc. Hence the success of the greenfield shopping malls.
  2. There is limited time at weekends for all the family stuff that needs to be done;
  3. What is New Brighton’s unique selling point going to be? If you live in Ilam & the local area offers the same, why travel to New Brighton; and
  4. Finally, New Brighton has weather that for the large part of the year is, well sh*t.
  
  So, they can spend what ever money they like, but they are not going to change the habits of the citizens of Chch or the weather.
  
  My advice to New Brighton, find something better to spend the money on.

I wonder why we haven’t heard much from the Free Speech Union on the current trend from Net Based News Sites, such as NZ Herald Social and Stuff, to moderate their discussion threads, be that self hosted, or on social media such as Facebook.

It seems that they are willing to provokle discussions, only to shut it down as soon as they see it going in directions that they deem to be offensive.

The Herald, for example, shut down a Facebook discussion on Shaneel Lal’s opinion piece on, ironically, Free Speech.

While I respect the right of organisations to moderate content, and I fully understand that social media is the equvalent of a Human Zoo with no cages, for a national media organisation, the bar should be a lot higher, especially as the critera for being moderated does seem to be political.

Goodness knows we can’t ever start a discussion on Trans Rights!

  You can tell what the sentiment is on a particular subject is with the average person by how quickly $tuff shuts down the comments. If the comments are marginally in favour of what they espouse, the ones counter to it will appear below the [more comments] button, while the comments for it will be above the fold so to speak.
  
  If the comments are overwhelming against what they are pushing, the comments section will show, at most, a couple of comments that are pro their stance and be closed in less than two hours of being up.
  
  Can’t comment on their behaviour on other social media platforms as I either don’t use them or have actively blocked them.

  The FSU has got enough on its plate without making social commentary on the policies of individual organisations exercising their free speech, which includes the right to moderate or disable comments.
  
  Kiwiblog moderates comments, thankfully with a light touch, but that is their right.
  
  The FSU is more concerned, properly in my opinion, with threats to speech from central and local government, and academic institutions.
  
  Keep in mind: it’s a real trade union. It has members. I’m one of those members. As are thousands of other Kiwis. If any of us as members have an issue with our free speech being curtailed we can contact our union and have them act on our behalf.
  
  But as a member I wouldn’t be so precious as to call them over having my comments moderated on a neo-Marxist website like Stuff or The Herald. As a matter of morality, what am I objecting to? That they are exercising their own free speech rights by refusing to listen (publish) to me? I have no such right to be published on their platform.

    When organisations like $tuff claim to be the arbiters of truth and then suspend you for pointing out the fallacies they or their reporters are using, facts that are independently verifiable which run counter to their (paid for by taxpayer funds) opinions, they allow comments that run counter to their policy on bullying & harassment from certain commenters who always pop up only on pieces about the government, there might be an issue given that the organisations are receiving taxpayer funds.

      I agree to the extent they are receiving public money.
      
      But this is the tangled web we weave. Which stories are paid for with taxes? Or is it the whole organisation that can be held accountable? And can it be held accountable the way a proper government organisation can?
      
      It’s such a fetid pool of murky transactions and loyalties. But this is what Kiwis want. Election after election they vote for public funding of this media and that art and that performance, on and on until public money is being used for specifically political ends. Hell, our political parties are publicly funded, supposedly in the interests of a robust democracy. And the calls are always there for parties to be totally tax-funded to avoid the need for private funding at all.
      
      This is actually the soft corruption that naïve Kiwis think we are immune to. Well, you don’t have to pay people off with big bags of cash delivered in dark alleyways to be corrupt. You simply pay it directly to people via an act of parliament. In NZ, corruption is legally sanctioned.
      
      We have dug these holes ourselves. We are to blame. The Public Interest Journalism Fund and $55 million in media support are just the latest manifestation of these corruptions in our culture.
      
      The only solution is to remove all funding for media, arts, everything. And to sell off all public media, TV, radio, everything.
      
      But ACT, let alone a centre-left party like National, won’t go anywhere near it. Well, ACT would certainly trim the excesses but racist poetry and ideologically-motivated television would still be funded by the taxpayer.

        Decades ago I remember having to go and observe / take vital signs from someone who was really quite dangerous to himself and others, in the eponymous padded room.     On The Platform this morning Sean Plunket, live on air, called the CEO of RNZ and left a message on his voicemail urging him to pull that story from the website because apparently the police did not say that trans people should call them, but they did say that anyone feeling threatened should contact them.
    
    RNZ apparently twisted that advice to suggest the police had specifically urged trans people to report anti-trans attacks. They didn’t.
    
    So that story is fake news.
    
    That said, the police behaved like cowards at the Posie Parker event at Albert Park. They should be be rightly nailed to the wall for their despicable behaviour, standing by, unwilling to listen to the pleas of women who were being violently assaulted.

  The Disinformation Project no doubt has laudable intentions, but unfortunately seem to be rapidly succumbing to the primary danger that afflicts all such groups.
  
  Those people and groups who spend a significant amount of their time searching for conspiracy theories, disinformation, and extremist rhetoric online, will of course inevitably find it – because the sheer size of the Internet guarantees that if you look hard enough, you will find what you’re looking for. And once these “researchers” start finding the sort of stuff they’re searching for, it’s very easy to fall down the rabbit hole and become convinced that the Internet is awash with it, that the threats are real, that there are highly organised groups plotting the overthrow of the Government and who knows what else. Because they are spending a huge amount of time and energy searching for so-called “disinformation”, they become consumed and addicted to it, and inevitably they will lose perspective – as Cranmer quite rightly points out.
  
  The Disinformation Project appears to be succumbing to their very own conspiracy theories.

    These groups have been enabled with a single focus, to ensure the government narrative dominates all discourse. Read the whole post again. It is obvious what is going on.

    Gerry Brownlee gets a black mark for daring to question the effectiveness of masks.
    It has been proven beyond doubt that masks have practically zero ability to prevent transmission of an aerosol based virus. Yet they use his opposition to it as an attack on him. Brownlee changed position rapidly due to the flack, even though he was right to ask the question.
    
    That is government controlling narrative. That is extremely concerning.
    
    In another of their tables, they list what they perceive as dangerous “disinformation”.
    
    Lockdown ineffective
    
    Deaths overestimated or miscounted
    
    Herd immunity a better response
    
    Testing ineffective
    
    Vaccine is dangerous/will alter DNA
    
    Covid Plan B and Mike Hosking are listed as pushing these ideas therefore clearly “dangerous”.
    
    The problem for ‘The Disinformation Project’ is that other than possibly the DNA angle, every single one of the others is a verifiable fact. (The DNA part still isn’t fully understood and may well be true.)
    
    The thing is, they will NEVER engage in an open debate about these topics, because they know for a stone cold fact that they would be exposed as the liars and narrative controllers they actually are. They have NOTHING in the way of actual science. If they did, they would come to the debate and prove their side of the story.
    
    They can’t and never will.

Just a quick follow up to DPF blogging yesterday on the shockingly low census turnout, heading to be on par with the 2018 debacle.

A few thoughts….

An inquiry into 2018 census was scathing on Stats NZ. I won’t repeat the findings here. You can easily find them. This was despite Jacinda Ardern initially blaming the previous National Government for all the problems at Stats NZ. 😂. The CE of Stats NZ resigned.

In 2018 the media were savage about the result. Will they react the same in 2023? Maybe not. This leads to the obvious we question. Did Stats NZ stuff up again? Maybe. However from what I observed they did just about everything they could have. My hypothesis is that 2018 was a Stats NZ stuff up. What we are seeing in 2023 is deep distrust and hatred of the government by people who were screwed over the COVID response. In the Maori population, you are seeing a significant minority of people in utter dysfunction. Wayne Mapp described this well in his comment on yesterday’s thread.

Which brings me to Wayne’s prediction that another census debacle will usher in the end of censuses in New Zealand. Maybe. However I cannot find any western country that does not conduct a regular census at least every 10 years. Also as I noted yesterday at least in the English speaking nations, the response rates have historically been extremely high. Over 95 percent and in most countries over 97 percent.

If this is really the end of the census it is a big deal.

  Unless it is organised and has relevant questions then it will be the end. I didn’t do it and most people I know lied about the answers just so they could say they completed it. I looked at the online version and saw I could choose a language and if I chose Chinese I got Chinese, same with Spanish and all the others, but if I chose English I got mostly Māori, so at that point I disengaged. I would quite happily fill it out if it was not so pathetic, woke, and in the language I choose to use.

    IMO, they were seeking responses that would lead favourably to Maori outcomes in the future. This is evidenced by TV still advertising for Maori census forms to be returned. No such emphasis for others such as Chinese, Indian, Pacifica, etc.

This is just one facet of the Ardern legacy. That woman’s reputation will live on, in infamy. One day saying someone is an Ardernite will have the same implications as saying someone is a Quisling.   From what you said, I am with Wayne on this one. I think if this census is a failure, and it seems it will be, at most there will be one more.
  
  Personally I think the 2018 Census badly damaged the public feelings towards the necessity of filling these in. Labour told us over and over that they could manufacture the results from other datasets. Why would we bother this time?
  
  I also think Stats have again stuffed this up again. There seems no consistency. I got personally delivered papers but most people I know never did. My father got something in the mail telling him they wouldn’t deliver papers and he had to do it online. Which was hard for him as he has no computer. Papers we delivered multiple times with multiple login codes. These allowed people to do the census online multiple times for the same address. These are just the issues I know of.
  
  Probably the only way they are going to get good enough turn out is to start enforcing the fines for non completion. That will go down like a bag of sick.

  What you might get is a separate Census Dept , run for and by that “community” .

  Widowgast – I believe you are 100% correct. The destruction of trust has had, and will continue to have an horrendously negative impact on all of our lives, some of which we haven’t even seen yet.
  
  Rebuilding that trust is an absolute priority for whoever the next government is. Without it, they will struggle to achieve anything. They need to take people with them.
  
  Ardern and her “team of 5 million” was a great idea, the problem is, for her it was a lie. Nothing more than a cheap marketing slogan that was exposed very quickly as such. Like all of her other “aspirations”.
  
  She was the epitome of a fraud and snakeoil saleswoman and is responsible for loss of trust and division in every area of society today. It’s a hard road ahead.

Although Brooke van Velden does mention the Treaty (as NZ ON AIR’s edict on distributing the $55m exhorts) –
The division over race is far worse, and will be more difficult to turn around. One constant in Ardern’s legacy is the work of Labour’s Māori caucus to ensure everything the Government does divides people into tangata whenua – land people here by right, and Tangata Tiriti – Treaty people here by the grace of the Treaty.

Every so often Verity Johnson, who is a Stuff columnist, writes something interesting.
Her effort published this morning was about the Green MP Chlöe Swarbrick and the ‘crybaby’ jab at her from Dr Elizabeth Kerekere.
Miss Johnson traversed jealousy for young, clever – and dare I say it, pretty – gels by older women and blokes.
Inexplicably she also cites approvingly the Swedish Goblin of Doom, Greta Thunberg, and the Duchess of Sussex …
I have to say I like Chlöe Swarbrick. It’s an entirely personal thing.
At a provincial airport before the 2017 General Election my older brother, our older sister and I asked Chlöe if she would mind taking my phone camera and photographing the three of us together. He was flying back to Auckland.
She smiled graciously, put aside her own phone, took a break from her texting, and did as we asked, and handed the phone back with a smile. Thank you, Chlöe.
The photos she took were of a brother, aged 72, before he began to decline mentally and two years before a crippling stroke disabled him. He died a year ago.
But the photos of the three of us remain precious. Thank you, Chlöe.
There was nothing in it for her. My sister might be a Green voter but she’s 81.
My brother used to be a union activist and a member of a Communist party aligned with Beijing.
A sponsored visit to the Workers Paradise in 1974 put an end to that. He came home shaken and disillusioned.
I disagree with just about everything Chlöe Swarbrick stands for.
She would fit in well as a commissar-apparatchik in some sort of soviet that told people what was good for them and how she knew better than them. She is a natural leader.
Young people looking for a leader would follow her.
Behind her warm smile and charismatic manner I would say lurks a calculating brain. Never underestimate Chlöe.
Verity Johnson might be right about Dr Kerekere and why she apparently dislikes the younger, prettier (am I allowed to say that?), sassier Chlöe.
Dr Kerekere (she/her) is a mid-50s artist from Gisborne – and part-Irish. The physical contrast is plain for everyone to see.
I’ve never understood why women and girls can be so nasty to each other. It was feminists of the Labour Left who mocked Naomi Lange’s pink cardies.
Feminist women mocked the mother of my children for preferring to stay home and be a mother. They used to call women like her ‘cabbages’.
She had a responsibility to support the aims of the Sisterhood by going out to work and ‘contributing’.
One of my daughters was bullied relentlessly – until she was about 15 – by the ‘cool girls’ because she was deemed different. Not ‘cool’.
They were dreadful. I committed the cardinal sin of phoning up parents and telling them what their daughters were saying to her.
The interesting thing was the reaction of the mothers. Some of them were well-known in Leftwing-feminist circles. One had a sister who was a Labour Party MP.
Complete indifference and dismissive. My daughter (and by implication me, too) was overdramatising it.
In the end she found her own way of dealing with the Mean Girls.
I know other girls, other women, all of whom have been bullied by Mean Girls.
My eldest granddaughter was bullied at her Australian primary school by Mean Girls. They made fun of her hair (ginger), her freckles, how she spoke (she was too articulate for them), and for going into puberty before them.
Fortunately she was at a school with an assertive principal and her last year or so was largely incident-free.
I have two other granddaughters, aged 10 and 6, who are pretty, confident, outspoken, and cuttingly bossy.
I have come to accept that part of my grandfather function in life is to be told off by them.
They’re getting better the more they practise on me.

A bit up GD, Widogast Corwin linked to a RNZ story which stated that, in the wake of Posie Parker’s visit police had said trans people should call them if they felt threatened. Several commenters have pointed out that in fact the police did not specifically urge *trans* people to report anti-trans attacks; they had directed the statements at *ALL* people, and RNZ had apparently (deliberately?) twisted that to suggest the police had specifically urged trans people to report anti-trans attacks.

In other words, RNZ has blatantly propagated mis-information.

Well, that story has – very quietly – been updated at RNZ. The link Widogast Corwin provided, https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/487640/police-urge-rainbow-community-to-report-threats-violence-in-wake-of-posie-parker-visit still takes you to the story, but it has been “corrected”. The headline now reads:

Police urge anyone including the rainbow community to report threats, violence

But there is no note that an earlier version of the story was published. No retraction or apology. And even the hyperlink has been updated, although the original one still works and just redirects to it.

Let’s just say it again. RNZ has blatantly propagated mis-information, and, when caught, has ever so quietly changed their story. What if they hadn’t been caught?

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins won’t say yet whether he will be going to the coronation of King Charles, but says the event will be marked in this country by the planting of trees.

Asked on The AM Show on Tuesday whether he had received an invitation to the coronation, at Westminster Abbey in London in May, Hipkins confirmed he had been invited.

“I hope to be in a position fairly soon to indicate what my plans are around that,” he said.

“I’m not making that announcement today, but I have received the invitation, and I’m looking on it very favourably.”

Here’s a point that’s been bugging me of late.

It’s the tactic used by some New Zealanders to imply that because we’ve signed up to UNDRIP then co-governance MUST happen to give effect to our pledge. I’ve seen it repeatedly. One must automatically follow the other.

(Please note here I am referring to co-governance as suggested by some to mean a separate parliament, completely separate ministries, Maori veto rights over everything etc and not merely teaming up with the local Iwi to MANAGE a discreet water body etc).

As far as I’m aware it does no such thing.

Signatories are free to determine for themselves exactly how they will give effect to their pledge and setting up co-governance arrangements is merely one of many ways we could legitimately do so.

It’s up to us.

And, as we have seen, all sorts of countries are doing it in all sorts of ways.

To me it’s just one more example of the deceit and misdirection perpetrated by some in this debate. If co-governance is such a resoundingly great idea then let them convince the public of this in an open, honest and transparent manner.

To use deceit, hood-winking and lies by omission etc co-governance proponents cover themselves in eternal shame.

One further point, if I am wrong (and I don’t think I am) and it transpires that UNDRIP automatically requires co-governance then I would expect a responsible NZ government to unsign us from it by lunchtime.

    Swifty: I happen to speak Vanuatu pidgin (Bislama) moderately fluently, having worked there for two years. While the vocabulary is still a bit limited, it is being added to all the time. I’m not suggesting that New Zealand should celebrate pidgin, but the group of languages (and there are many pidgins around the world), provide a vital communication in places where there are multiple languages, often spoken by only a small population, most of them unintelligible to other speakers.
    I have a high respect for the Vanuatu people, and they do not come across as wanting to ride a gravy train, or push an agenda. Please don’t generalise if you don’t have a closer understanding of the situation.

  There is enough data now freely available that everyone can make up their own mind on the jabs. I just tell my family/friends that I’m not getting any jabs and that you’d have to have rocks in your head if you decide to get more. I then happily give them some sources to read if they want it.
  
  I’m sick of arguing. Blind Betty can see what the actual data shows – it doesn’t work and it is dangerous.

  Utterly bizarre. The tiny numbers of Maori who got a third or fourth shot will line up for another shot without being urged to do so. On the other hand, Maori folk who were not vaccinated, or who only got the first two shots to get their ‘vaccine pass’, will NEVER get this new booster, no matter how many radio ads are run.

  A bit unfair to generalise about motorcamps, Maggie. My wife and I stayed at one in Blenheim a month or so ago, and it was clean, well-appointed, and reasonable in price. Managed by a young Chinese couple, who were very friendly, and even loaned us something we had forgotten to take on our trip. We were very impressed.

I heard a very interesting interview with Sean Plunker interviewing Ian Wishart about volcanoes under Antarctic ice.

If one of those volcanoes goes off there could be a huge sea level rise. Ian is not a scientist but he is going on what climate scientists like Dr Judith Curry said.

Too much CO2 could raise the sea level, mm’s whereas an underwater volcanic eruption under Antarctic ice could raise the sea level meters.

If the snow and ice on the land mass of Antarctica melts, then yes, sea level will rise, the extent of the rise worldwide will be subject to scientific study.

    The ring of underwater Volcanoes in West Antarctica has been well known for some time.
    There’s quite a lot of them and most are active.
    The heat they generate warms the water but its not major and isnt causing Ice melt which we should be concerned about in Antartica.
    Its been like that for a while…

Strange article because to have a cabinet that is half woman wouldn’t you first have to know what a woman is?

I see that our illustrious (not) leader has committed to Jacindarella’s light rail for the North Shore. Not the brightest boy on the block that one.

We have a heavy rail infrastructure in NZ that’s grossly under utilised and is no longer fit for purpose because of decades of under investment. If rail was used correctly we would be able to reduce the transport carbon outputs.

I have been watching train cab videos from Europe and one thing that stuck out is the primitiveness of our rail infrastructure and system compared to theirs. I have also travelled on regional and commuter trains in Australia. The common theme is the gauge and speed. They all use the standard gauge (1.415m) whilst we have a narrow gauge (1.014m) system. Th reason for the narrow gauge here is the geography, but modern technologies can mitigate that.

Maybe it’s time that our rail network and gauge is comprehensively reassessed with an investigation into moving to the standard gauge. Of course it will be expensive, but over time it would pay for itself in greater productivity and better regional and commuter passenger systems. It would mean that our good s and people move to destinations quicker than at present.

In Switzerland in one place they run standard gauge and narrow gauge trains on the same track. They achieve this by having three rails on the track; rail one is the base rail, rail two at the narrow gauge width and the third at standard gauge width. The switching points and crossovers are the same. If we were to move to standard gauge here, we could gradually undertake the transition by doing the same. All that would be required is wider (longer) concrete sleepers and the third rail. Of course tunnels and bridges would have to be widened. Kiwi Rail already have experience at increasing tunnel depth after they deepend the tunnels between Palmerston North and Wellington in order to take high cube containers. Of course widening the tunnels is a different skill and there are companies in Switzerland and Germany that have quite a lot of experience in that.

I mentioned the speed advantage of standard tracks earlier. In Europe freight trains with a tonnage of 2,200 tonnes and length of 600m are travelling at a median speed of +100 kmh even in the European Alps. They move a terrific amount of freight. Passenger trains are travelling at speeds up to 160 kmh and their high speed trains 200 – 300 kmh. Meanwhile here in NZ our trains reaching 100 kmh is rare and that’s because of the narrow gauge.

A change of gauge doesn’t mean that we have to acquire new sets of locomotives and rolling stock. We just increase the width of the bogies on our current locos and rolling stock to the 1.435m standard gauge. However we should seriously consider electrifying the entire rail network over time. That would require far more electricity generation than what we have at the moment and maybe thorium salt reactors could be a possibility. Thorium salt reactors are far safer than uranium reactors.

Imagine, if you will, being able to take a four hour train trip from Auckland to Wellington that’s almost as quick as flying, but takes you to the city centre from the city centre. The last time I did an Auckland Wellington train trip it was about 10 hours duration. Hamilton to Auckland in just over an hour; Masterton to Wellington Central in around an hour; Picton to Christchurch 2 – 3 hours etc.

Returning to Auckland, most of the heavy rail infrastructure is already present and an obvious choice would be to extend a heavy rail track from Henderson to the North Shore and then via a bridge or tunnel, back the Auckland Central. That way you would have a commuter train loop right around the city. At the same time build a track to the airport from Otahuhu and continue that to link with the Auckland City – Henderson line. You then have rail access to the airport from the south and the west. The rail stations on these lines serve as hubs for local bus services and you ensure plenty of park and ride capability at each station.

Just my halfpenny’s worth.

  Not a rail enthusiast here, but I do believe more investment is needed after the disastrous privatization. I doubt the gauge could be changed without massive expenditure on tunnels, etc. If the main reason to do so is to promote passenger services, rather than freight efficiency, I doubt it stacks up.

    From hat I understand most railways core earner is freight and here it is the same. The suggested gauge change should significantly improve freight capacity and quicken delivery.
    
    I am not sure if the tunnels would have to be widened. All rail wagons here are 2.4m (8ft) wide which is the width of a 20ft TEU container, and depending on the wagon 15m long. Over width loads have been carried by rail, but there are strict requirements as to how wide and where they could travel. Over length loads are routinely carried with an empty wagon either end, or at the overlength end of the load. The longest load I can remember is 23m concrete electricity poles.

  Trains don’t have a future outside of some special bulk-haulage cases on existing infrastructure. The extra handling costs to get freight on and off trains make it mostly uneconomic in a small country like NZ. And the huge cost of maintaining poorly utilised rail infrastructure means that most of it should be done away with.
  
  Check out latest videos of Teslas self driving. Lots of people now able to do trips of an hour around town without needing to intervene. Many more hours without intervention on highway.
  
  It’s nearly ready to start taking over from public transport. Inflexible slow buses and trains will become a thing of the past outside of a few existing systems (sunk cost). In a decade it will probably make sense to convert passenger rail lines to extra car lanes.
  
  Autonomous robo trucking will be able to work at night replacing a lot of trains without adding to daytime traffic.

    The thing about trains is they can carry far more cheaper than trucks can, especially over long distances. Just look at the lengths of American trains with some being up to 2 km in length. Boeing freight Boeing 737 fuselages half way across the country by train to their assembly facility in Redmond, Washington. Europe has an integrated rail service which means freight travels by train across borders and the continent with only locomotive and crew changes. For example there’s a very regular freight service from Italy to Germany that travels through Switzerland and generally uses the Gotthard Base Tunnel unless the train is carrying dangerous goods such as hydrocarbon fuels, inflammable gases etc. I have seen video evidence of a Swiss Federal Railways engine pulling a freight train through the Netherlands towards Rotterdam. Freight in Europe has quicker transit times on rail than by road.
    
    WRT to autonomous trucking in NZ, a lot of freight carted by single crewed trucks at night anyway, and they do damage the roading network. Trucks ar also generally limited to a max gross weight of 44 tonnes and that includes the trailer. Our roading networks aren’t anywhere near the quality of American or European ones where trucks and trailers can do 110 kph, dependinging upon the country. Here they are stuck to 90 kmh on substandard roads.
    
    Rail is much like tanks; reports of their imminent demise is premature.
