Regional and local councils have done sea level rise predictions to limit coastal development. People have queried where they get their data from. The answers seem to be NIWA, leading back to IPCC. Well, a scientific paper has now been done on the detail of what they are basing their predictions on. And guess what? Most if not all of the level rises use come from the upper end prediction of RCP8.5. That is an extreme modelling scenario which IPCC has been forced to admit can’t happen. That little inconvenient fact hasn’t stopped the zombies though. The sea level rises predicted had no connection to the long term data that comes from the long term tidal gauges. These don’t even show an acceleration. That is something the global alarmist advocates try to gaslight the public on.

So the maps used and the draconian requirements that councils want to force on people has no basis in science. Remember that next time the councils try to force retreat from the coasts.

  I would prefer that councils modelled an Ocean rise of 8 metres at a time frame of 800km per hour.
  No problem with people building in flood zones or tsunami zones, just so long as they don’t expect the rest of us to bail them out.

  It is possible that the sea level could go up over a metre in a very short time and it has nothing to do with CO2. If one or more undersea volcanos near the coast of Antarctica erupted it could cause ice on the land to slide into the sea.

    It would be difficult to determine that probability too, but I guess since it could happen then all this climate change expense is pointless and should be stopped

      If you pop it into a spreadsheet and graph it, it shows that antarctic sea ice extent is increasing.
      
      It only goes up to 2017. I haven’t been able to find more up to date data. I assume if the trend had reversed and now showed a fall in the sea ice extent, it would be Front page news.

    You have to stop buying into “could happen”, “may happen”, “might happen.”
    
    Please provide the source data of how much ice would have to be uplifted from inner Antarctica to raise the sea level of the entire earth by 1 metre.
    
    Simple facts like:
    [1] Antarctic land ice area as a percentage of the rest of the earth.
    [2] Temperature required to melt the -80° C or greater at the ice rock/land interface. The energy required to do so.
    [3] Average angle of the land/rock from South Pole to sea.
    [4] Friction resisting force created by the uneven surface of the land and rock on its slide to the sea.
    [4] Rate of volcano heat dissipation to the earth’s seas, and air convection.
    [5] The thermal mass and temperature change lag times.
    [6] The heat transfer rate / losses associated with sea temperature being transferred to the rock/land at a distance big enough to ensure that the lowest land temperature is at least 0°C.
    [7] The temperature curve of inner land temperature (starting at 0°C and rising to say 50°C) vs the time required for the ice to start sliding.
    [8] The slide time in centuries.
    [9] How many decades or centuries will these volcanoes need to be spewing out hot lava to maintain the temperatures required.
    [10] Given the conservation of energy and the earth’s thermal mass, and all other things being equal, excess heating in one area will be accompanied by excess cooling in another area.
    [11] And perhaps links to scaled down physical experiments.
    
    If sea temperatures are to be maintained high enough for long enough to raise the inner land mass of Antarctica by at least 80°C, perhaps as high as 120° depending on the flatness of the land/rock as stated above, thermal mass and time required, then a 1 metre water level raise is the least of worries for your great great great grand children. And in any case 1 metre sea level rise is not as catastrophic as you might imagine.
    
    I suggest you prepare for the much greater possibility that a dozen 6ft 38-24-36 Amazonian blonds from Venus will land their spacecraft on your front lawn and look after you, cook for you, make love to you and look after your every need.
    
    Statistically however, you cannot predict the Earth being hit by an Asteroid, or get nuked in some inter-galactic / sector war between two of the many millions of advanced life forms that inhabit this universe.

      You don’t have to melt it from the top. The basic physics of Antarctic ice loss is that when the ice shelves at the boundary go, this removes the cork and the rate of downhill slide accelerates. The equilibrium line – where the ice floats off the rock – moves inland. This is happening – look up Pine Island.
      
      In addition to this there are plenty of crevasses and water on top of the ice. The water goes down the cracks so you eventually get free water at the bottom and more of the glacier is floating ….
      
      So the “friction” and “melt from the top” arithmetic gets a bit hard. The melting would of course happen after the berg is in the sea ….

        Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers drain about 40% of the West Antarctic ice sheet. In 2005 some scientists flew about 75000 ks back and forth over the glaciers using ice penetrating radar to see what it all looked like. They found large lakes of meltwater under the glaciers.
        
        I accept that nothing is going to happen next week, but the data seem to indicate that the ice sheets are being significantly nibbled from the edges and below. Global energy balances and the ice/rock coefficient of friction don’t tell the whole picture.

        Pine Island ice shelf is thinning. Glacier has speeded up. Grounding line is moving inland at about 2km/year. Next door the (also big) Thwaites Glacier has doubled in width and maintained speed.
        
        I have no trouble with the notion that volcanic heat has something to do with these changes – except that the volcanic sources have presumably been there forever and the changes are recent ….

      Water lakes under the ice are nothing new, it has been happening since the dawn of time. And so have sub-glacial lakes.
      
      It may have been a revelation to the scientists that discovered the sub ice lakes, just like a two year old discovering he has a willy, but to adult scientists or even smart high school students it is nothing unusual, because of Boyles law.
      
      If you were not sleeping in high school science, you would have learnt about Boyles Law, and other principles. Principles that are used every day in the real world. Ice under pressure can become liquid. And in low pressure (or release of high pressure) the reverse happens.
      
      Surely you remember all the high school experiments / studies with ice, water and gas?
      one of which was boiling water at 15° C, as one of many.
      
      Have you actually been engaged in science, physics and thermodynamics? Have you ever created experiments to test your theories. I have. I’ve spent a lifetime doing exactly that, across a wide range of science.
      
      [1] Your theory about the main continent would hold some possible validity, and I say some, if the Antarctic Continent was one flat 100ft thick piece of mirror finish stainless steel sitting at an angle of 45°.
      
      But if this was the case, the original snow that created the ice, that created the Antarctic ice shelf, would never accumulate.
      
      But in any case with a surface temperature of -80°C, the snow, water vapour and even gas will adhere to the source and start building up.
      
      [2] Even at 100ft thick, the stainless steel would buckle, twist and deform from the billions of tons of ice, resulting in hills, valleys and crevices. So may be 1000ft thick? But even the temperature gradients would crack and deform the stainless.
      
      The reality is that the surface of Antarctica under the ice is not mirror smooth. It is exceedingly rough terrain with mountains and rough terrain, all of which provide horizontal/vertical cohesion and friction, that even a fleet of 6000 Aircraft carriers couldn’t shift.
      
      [3] If your theory had any validity then glaciers around the world at high inclination angles would race down the mountains at close to the speed of running water.
      
      And ice is already melting in Antarctica, and has a been since the dawn of ice on the Antarctic continent, And it continually gets replaced. It is part of nature’s cycles.

        During the summer, meltwater forms in pools on the glacier surface. A lot of then disappears down crevasses to end between the bedrock and the glacier.
        
        I agree that if the Antarctic was a sheet of stainless steel things might be different. I defer to your lifetime of scientific investigation.

        Boyle’s Law is a basic law in chemistry describing the behavior of a gas held at a constant temperature. The law, discovered by Robert A. Boyle in 1662, states that at a fixed temperature, the volume of gas is inversely proportional to the pressure exerted by the gas.
        
        If you change pressure for a set volume, temperature is altered. If you alter volume for set pressure, temperature is altered.
        
        The relationship between Pressure, Volume, and Temperature is what allows refrigerators, freezers, heat pumps, air conditioners, blast freezers, freeze dry machines etc etc to work.
        
        No way are the subsurface (water) lakes at -80 C. At that temperature, water is ice.
        
        I never said the subsurface (water) lakes were at -80. I said the rock / ice junction was at -80.
        
        However the freezing temperature of water drops when the water is under pressure. See my earlier notes on Boyles law.
        
        This is called supercooling. Under extreme pressure water remains as a liquid to very low temperatures. It does not convert to ice until the pressure is released.

        You could also look at a phase diagram which shows how states (liquid/sold/vapour) vary with pressure and temperature. You don’t have to go to youtube ….

    A very simplified answer.
    I saw a study two years ago, can’t recall who wrote it but was a credible University, I think Harvard but would need to do a search.
    It highlights the issues with accurately predicting SLR.
    It gave a range of 1.1 to 1.8 m if the ice on land in Antarctica melted from the North shelf?
    But the kicker is that was minus 1.1 m to plus 1.8 m
    The reason being they’re not sure if the massive weight of ice melts wether the land rises more than the water melt . They referred to the possibility that the weight effect could go as far as the equator.

  Almost all climate communists use the outcomes of the absurd RCP8.5 scenario to scare the siht out of people. It has been a deliberate scam from the start. The Green Party, and our current Govt still use it with no understanding of what they are saying. The MSM are any trained on RCP8.5 scenarios (and they don’t know what RCP8.5 even is).
  The entire climate narrative you read and watch in MSM is complete bollocks. Go and find the actual data and you get the real picture. Temp up 1.3 degrees since 1850’s and tracking at about 0.13 degrees per decade. Which makes the planet a warmer, safer place to live in. And the higher CO2 is the perfect environment for plant growth. That sounds a bit less scary than the Hollywood scenario RCP8.5

  I had to put a flood warning on the title of a house to be built because of that modelling for the northland region. A few months later we got the biggest flooding g the area has seen in over 100 years. Our land was as dry as a bone. Just as well we spent the money to put a flood warning on the land

    no maybe about it – the abusive action of the CCC against christchurch residents using the rcp8.5 was kicked to touch and the CCC had to remodel which showed that there was over 100 years before you even needed to think about what might happen. The council was also found to be hiding a ‘sand report’ that said the pegasus bay was acreating and hence the residents had more like 250 years before they had to even consider this BS. People who think the coastlines are risky should go look at where most insurance claims happen and its rivers, lakes, earthquake zones, rain events, landslips. The total BS about coast line is a manufactered FUD that should be put to bed. Its rubbish

  I thought they’d dumped RCP 8.5? I recall arguing here a decade ago that yet another flaw with the climate models was that the major input into them, CO2 emissions, were themselves based on models – and economic -> energy usage models at that which would have even worse assumptions built into them.
  
  Even as long ago as 2000 it was obvious that the global emissions forecasts of RCP 8.5 for the 21st century were extremist as they were already diverging from reality.

  I raised some of these issues (and some more) in a recent Kapiti Coast District Council hearing. The Council’s engineers had used RCP 8.5 as per Ministry for Environment guidelines.
  
  As an expert reviewer for the IPCC with a masters in Climate Science and policy and an ex city councillor I showed how that approach was not appropriate anymore. Turns out the guidelines that should be used, from DoC, require using ‘likely’ scenarios, not ‘implausible’ ones.
  
  I have written to MfE about this ambiguity without response. Also the latest estimates of subsidence and its impact on relative sea level rise have not got through the peer review (submitted last June) and should not be utilised until it does.

During the pandemic lockdowns and other measures, when it was so bewailed that Maori were not being served by the Health system and that many kaumātua (elderly) could die along with those with underlying conditions, I wondered why the special knowledge to be dispersed by the then-new Maori Health Authority could not be applied, in principle, in advance, to save lives or reduce hospitalisations and serious illness.

Then 3 July 2022 I read –

Just like they do with Matariki, Māori use maramataka as a way of reading the cosmos to prepare for what’s coming. [1]

There seemed to be no immediately useable helpful Maori Health Authority avenues for covid reach.
Otherwise the then-Minister of Health, Andrew Little, with most intelligence at his fingertips bring in the health changes, could have used them in the nation’s and Maori moment of need, wouldn’t he? [2]

A new survey of coastal managers (including our Regional Councils) around the world, asked them what sea level rise scenarios they rely on for planning purposes. Unsurprisingly, but also incredibly troubling, 119 of the 253 coastal managers surveyed reported using sea level scenarios above the upper end (95th percentile) of the bounds of the RCP8.5 scenario. This is crazy and represents solid evidence that RCP8.5 underpins not just a seemingly endless stream of out-of-date science, but also is being used improperly is real-world policy settings. The result is massively increased costs for property owners and ratepayers.

For RCP8.5 to be a reality coal use would have to increase by 800% and the world population to hit 15 billion. That is never happening. Most scientific institutions have quietly dropped RCP8.5

Too many elected people in these authorities are ideologically driven, green fruitcakes which is serious enough but far more concerning is that many paid staff are members of extreme green organisations and make no secret of their bias and agenda. On so many fronts the world lacks leadership that has integrity.

There is next to no alarmist stories coming out now at the end of the Antarctic summer about the Thwaites that I suspect they have found it isn’t accelerating dangerously.   The FNS Vendemiaire arrived in Auckland January 12 2023 and entered Devonport drydock for a refit. She left drydock 30 March and tied up at the training pier. She sailed 6 April for seatrials and returned for a day before sailing 8 April for Noumea.
  I don’t know why she is still hanging around in NZ waters.

  They have recently deregulated the welfare standards that also included min air changes required for permanently housed animals, hard way to learn what was already known if that was a factor.

The headline storey is about an Afghan refugee living in poor conditions living in NZ. I feel sorry for the poor fellow – he’s obviously had a tough life.

But, it’s only when you’re well down the story that you learn he’s not a quota refugee. Which means he’s been brought in by some do-gooder group or other, who have then lacked the resources to provide for him properly – perhaps abandoned him altogether & switching their focus to the next refugee they want to ‘save’.

Someone should be telling these people that a puppy is for life, not just for Christmas. Perhaps a hefty bond, equivalent to a couple of years of the dole or similar, should be mandatory.

      That’s actually a good point Mike: British settlers came to New Zealand rather than “fixing” Britain. I think this is self-evident. They weren’t fleeing war, that is true, but they were, more broadly fleeing “social strife” which comes under the same category as war. So its the same principle – they left rather than fixing things.
      
      Have said this, I don’t really subscribe to the “immigrants should stay and fix their own countries” argument. My case against immigration is independent of that idea, and is that multi-culturalism weakens societies, thus it isn’t a good idea.
      
      Now, someone may say “that’s what Maori in the 19th century probably thought too.” To that I would say, Maori didn’t really have the ability to keep the British out, whereas we today have every ability to severely restrict immigration to our country, it’s just that restriction for reasons of social coherence isn’t the policy. If you can deliberately control who does and doesn’t come to your country, you should do it.

      From what I see large numbers of Afghani citizens protest Taliban policies (girl’s education, freedom of women, rules around attire, blasphemy laws, forced religious observance, lack of general freedoms etc) but how many would prefer civil government over religious government and would vote accordingly in free and fair elections is another question.
      
      I don’t discount however the fact that many Afghanis today say they are Muslim because they’ve got no choice.
      
      Just look how many lived pre-1980. Their university campuses and city offices looked like those any US city.

  No, it’s not at all obvious that all New Zealanders should pay the same for their water. If you choose to live in a place where water supply is scarce or large amounts of infrastructure and treatment are needed to get water to you in drinkable condition, there are more costs involved in providing you with water than there are for somebody who lives where water is plentiful and easily available. Somebody’s got to pay those additional costs. Why should it be anybody other than yourself?

Applying Occam’s razor and the KISS principle to the water infrastructure problem, wouldn’t a simpler solution be:

1. The government establishes an international line of credit for the purpose of renewing water infrastructure. Tax payers cover that through taxes, which is OK, because apparently we all will have to pay more one way or another.

2. Councils can receive money from the fund as a grant specifically for water infrastructure replacement. Hence, the council effectively gets free money to do the work. How could they argue with that.

As a result, the work gets done. Savings are made as a result. And councils keep control of their assets.

  Let’s be clear here in general our water is very good and there is a few cluster fuck councils who are either too small, too incompetent or both aka Wellington Water. How about the Govt just focuses on those first and even brings in statutory management in the case of Wellington.

  I think all council borrowing should be divided up and slapped on each individual property/ratepayer – with low interest rate that govt can borrow at, so that each ratepayer can chose to pay off their part of it on their own schedule (or let interest accrue). And any time a property is sold the council debt on that property should be settled up.
  
  Key thing is that ratepayers should be confronted immediately with size of council borrowing – and councils would receive much stronger push to not live beyond their means.

    A lot of those were farms so would have a bore supplying their tanks. That well, if small, would be under general authorisation from regional council. If bigger (typically 15m3 per day round this way) it needs a specific consent.

    I have seen the “Stop Three Waters” signs on several rural roadsides round here.

  Hi Sparrow, not sure about tanks but if a property owner creates a pond/dam/reservoir on their freehold land the stored water comes under the jurisdiction of the. Regional Council and subject to their use laws and rules. I am assuming that RC control will now be passed to Te Arowai whatever and Chair Tipa Mahuta will have Maori sticky fingers all over it.
  We desperately need New Zealand to wake up and stop the entire maorification of the staff of life.

What portion of trees, planted to sequester carbon, end up as “slash” to be flood-stacked against bridges and so take them out along with other infrastructure, to litter farmland not eroded away through lack of other trees, and to litter river valleys, flood plains and plank beaches for kilometres, and to foul the ocean, rather than rotting on the forest floor to release their carbon, and in the case of pine, to kill the soil beneath them?

  Poor quality trees will have been thinned to ground level (or left to die and fall).
  
  Pine litter doesn’t kill the soil… and definitely not on the soils developing on the young geology of most of NZ.

Cybersecurity Expert Confirms SQL Software on Voting Machines and Manipulation of Votes on Dominion Machines – Rocci Stucci Show

In 2020 Democrats warned of the ability to cheat using the voting machines offered by Dominion and machines that are equipped with SQL software.

After President Trump set a new record for votes for a sitting president there were multiple late-night vote drops in swing states and in the end, they claimed Joe Biden received 81 million votes.

….Last week, cybersecurity expert Mark Cook proved how machines with SQL and Dominion voting machines could be manipulated to switch votes and add votes in order to undermine an election.

Moreover, he proved how this could be done without leaving a trace of the manipulation. On the Conservative Daily Podcast, Cook used an exact copy of the Dominion Voting software that was used in Mesa County, Colorado. He used that demonstration to prove two ways the election could be “fixed” in favor of Democrats.

The first issue demonstrated is that there is software that can manipulate the database used in elections using the SQL system which is not certified to be used in elections.

THE REPORT:

After the forensic examination of 16 Dominion Voting machines in Antrim, Co. MI, Allied Security Operations Group has concluded that the Dominion Voting machines were assigned a 68.05% error rate.

DePerno explained that when ballots are put through the machine, a whopping 68.05% error rate means that 68.05% of the ballots are sent for bulk adjudication, which means they collect the ballots in a folder. “The ballots are sent somewhere where people in another location can change the vote,” DePerno explained.

This software allows back-end access that bypasses any security and logging/tracking features that would and should exist in the application software itself.

… Cook only had to click on the software from the Start Menu of the Windows operating system, click the Connect button, then was allowed access to the voting system database without having to enter any special password. After a few more clicks and four key presses on the keyboard, Cook was able to flip the results of an election.

The second critical issue demonstrated is the existence of a second back-door program, a single file hidden among the over 416,000 files on the server. This program allows direct manipulation of the voting system database also in an un-traceable manner. … another critical issue, Cook shows how simply just plugging in a pre-programmed USB stick could leverage this utility to alter the results in the SQL database contained on the Election Management System.

….Below are two demonstrations Cook performed … In the first example, Cook is able to insert the USB stick. You then seen a command prompt appear and run the script to manipulate the database. …

….In the second demonstration below, Cook uses a smartphone to manipulate the database with relative ease. He states that he didn’t even put a password in to access the management software.

… ‘how on earth did someone set up a system that is this insecure? That the citizens think it’s actually secure. And the election officials are sitting there telling their friends and family and their citizens that they represent that the systems are secure when they are lying without even knowing it.”

And Democrats insist this was the most secure election in history. Russian history perhaps but not in American history.

Taxpayers are forking out $1.2 million a week to keep the wheels turning on the Government’s $14.6 billion light rail project in Auckland.

Auckland Light Rail (ALR) is paying about $920,000 a week to two engineering companies to plan and design the central city-to-airport light rail project and a further $310,000 to its own contractors and consultants.

Professor Norman Fenton highlights the insanity of net zero by 2050.
Using a UK government funded project, (https://ukfires.org/absolute-zero/) he points out the realities involved in any attempt to actually achieve this insane target.

My twitter thread highlighted the eye-watering points that the strategy required:

All airports in the U.K. except Heathrow, Belfast and Glasgow to close by 2030.

No flying at all by 2050.

No new petrol or diesel cars by 2030.

By 2050 road use restricted to 60% of today’s level.

Food, heating and energy restricted to 60% of today’s level by 2050.

Beef and lamb to be phased out by 2050.

I said that, apart from the extreme limitations on personal freedom and travel, this means either a colder, hungrier population or massive depopulation.

Within less than 24 hours the tweet had amassed well over three million impressions (by far the highest I’ve ever achieved).

And, whereas three years solid work undertaking Covid data analysis and exposing the manipulation and flaws of the entire ‘official’ narrative had never led to a single mainstream media article or interview, I was invited on to Laura Ingraham’s popular Fox News show last night to speak about this.

So, although the FIRES report is not new it seems that finally people are waking up to the lunacy of the Government’s Net Zero target and why it is doomed to fail (as explained by Professor Michael Kelly).

At present, the amount of battery storage needed to contain the energy for a jumbo jet crossing the Atlantic is six times the maximum cargo that such a jet can carry today.
Since the total world effort in battery research has improved the energy density of storage by a factor of six since 1970, it would take another 50 years of equally successful research progress, at an historic pace, before a large electric jet could take off even without passengers or cargo!

The covid scam was the precursor to the climate scam. This is the big one. Covid was used to see what the public would tolerate when it came to fear based destruction of human rights. Sadly too many accepted an awful lot.
Here’s hoping enough saw through it to ensure this nonsense gets stopped in it’s tracks instantly.

As Professor Fenton says:

But it’s still a surprise that it is a surprise to so many. All of this is consistent with UN/WEF Agenda 21, the UN ‘World at 2050′ agenda, and the WEF Great Reset with its ‘Build Back Better’ in which you’ll “own nothing and be happy”, and eat bugs instead of meat. Of course ’15 minute cities’ now being pushed everywhere are key to all of this (everything that’s happening now in that respect and how it fits into Agenda 21 was explained in Rosa Koire’s 2011 book – https://www.behindthegreenmask.com/).

As I said in 2021, the Covid lockdowns were always going to be the precursor for climate lockdowns.

Not a conspiracy. It’s happening right now. It’s all connected.

  I hope this report gives the bare facts about what is implied by committing New Zealand to a net-zero emissions economy for 2050. If I am correct, the goal is unattainable and will come at very great cost.
  We need, right now, a meaningful public conversation about the practical implications of trying to achieve net zero within 28 years. We need the Royal Society of New Zealand, Engineering New Zealand, economists, environmental scientists and public policy experts to participate in a serious, open-minded discussion of the engineering, financial and economic realities. The possibility of a renewed focus on adaptation, combined with a realistic
  emissions pathway, should at least be on the table for comparative analysis.
  I think that the hard facts will put a stop to mitigation and lead to a focus on adaptation.
  Mankind has adapted to the world over recent millennia and is better equipped than
  ever to adapt in the coming decades. The Dutch have been showing us for centuries how to deal with sea-level rise. Climate adaptation in the here and now is a much easier sell to the New Zealand citizenry than mitigation.
  There is a very strong case to repeal the net zero emissions legislation, replacing it with achievable goals and realistic timescales. The scope for mis-investment is great and the sums are enormous.

This ship is anchored off Karaka Bay, which is the narrows as ships leave Wellington. There’s another container ship swinging at anchor in the harbour itself, not far from the container wharf. I can’t see any ferry traffic either.

It would appear that the entrance to Wellington harbour is corked.

Members of Parliament should be trusted to express personal views in a thoughtful manner even if they may vary from party policy. It may add to the workload of the party leadership and whips but it will demonstrate that the National Party is a broad church that can accommodate a range of views representative of New Zealand.

Somebody make sure Luxon reads this. As the first commenter points out, National should be leading Labour by ten percentage points right now, not struggling for parity.

Community leaders in Canterbury say they are confident of gathering enough support in the regions for a legal challenge to Three Waters.

Both the Timaru and Waimakariri district councils have filed an application in the Court of Appeal after the High Court dismissed a claim on asset ownership declarations earlier this year.

The wife and I own two Nissan LEAF EV’s.

Absolutely love them, which is why we bought the second one.

I just read a concerning article in an IEEE magazine about a problem that mass adoption of EV’s could create.

Disregarding whether NZ could create enough electricity to power all the EV’s that might eventually require power, this article stated that the power transformers that lower the AC voltages to our homes to 220VAC rely on lower night time power usage to cool off. If EV adoption becomes too popular these power transformers will not have time to cool off since most EV’s are charged at night and will start to fail prematurely.

Not sure if this is BS. Perhaps someone who knows can answer.

  This aspect is often overlooked. We know that in parts of Auckland and Wellington, and possibly elsewhere, the infrastructure for the local distribution of electricity is already at full capacity. Historically, a house has a 60-A (ampere) fuse, the standard being set many decades ago when a 13-A stove was the most demanding appliance. In the all-electric home of the future, heat pumps can draw 58 A at startup, while radiant hobs can draw 27 A. Meanwhile, fast (slow) chargers for electric vehicles draw 33 A (12 A), and electric showers draw 33 A. The mains fuses will therefore undoubtedly need upgrading, and the local substations will need to be greatly expanded too. In some configurations, the wiring in houses will need to be upgraded, and new transformers installed in the street to supply the extra currents. It has been estimated to cost £0.7 trillion to carry out this work on local distribution for the UK.7 On a pro-rata household basis, the New Zealand costs would be of order $140 billion: given the lower population density, however, the amount of new distribution will only apply to about half the population, so a reasonable estimate would be around $70 billion. Without this spending, city-dwellers would have to live with frequent power failures.
  
  The whole concept of a fully electrified vehicle fleet is ideological lunacy on steroids. Unless there is some miraculous discovery in the next 30 years that can overcome the laws of thermodynamics.
