The Prime Minister’s Office has come out with a statement defending our
Ex Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
Jacinda Ardern’s involvement in Prince Harry, Meghan Markle Nexfix Show was misrepresented in Trailor, Prime Minister’s Office Claimed.
Well Jacinda Ardern has no one else to blame but herself as she is well known to be a stranger to the truth when being caught out on many of the statements she made when Prime Minister of New Zealand.

To twist the Treaty so far that Queen Victoria of the British Empire would sign a treaty with colonial “indigenous” people to have sovereignty over English settlers would have been pushing it too far –
but co-governance is also a step too far. Equal rule? – in 1840?
Queen Victoria agreed to a 50 / 50 partnership deal?
It just didn’t effing-well happen. That simple.

    Apart from the tone, and the ‘fraud’ assertion, the writing I skimmed over is pretty much factual and all ‘stuff that happened’.
    The inferences around the motivations or thoughts of colonial figures could do with more evidence, but the accounts of Browne, Grey and McLean’s activities etc. are not as bad as many (like Vincent O’Malleys more inflammatory history with glaring omissions and emotive insertions).
    
    KB readers should not immediately reject any writing which might be sympathetic to Maori or critical of Europeans. Just like I read the Daily Blog and Kiwi Blog. History is not black and white (goodies and badies), and the battle lines (along race) in modern times is why it is so poorly understood and misrepresented today.
    
    Emotion is what makes intellectual reviews of our history impossible.
    I say this as a person with a serious interest in the 19th century leading up to the conclusion of the NZ Wars. I don’t have any sense of guilt, and don’t think anyone should feel that. Everyone did what they thought was right & best, and current language like ‘holocaust/genocide/fraud’ is unhelpful or even toxic.
    100 years ago James Cowan wrote ‘…both races have causes for pride as well as regret’.
    
    The one general fault I would place on the history here by Dame Orange, given it is written for the sympathetic ear of progressive NZers and assertive Maori nationalists – is it makes no case for WHY European’s acted as they did, other than greed; implying settlers acted only on bad motives.
    Greed comes into it 100%, and a culture of Empire, and it is hard to defend the Waitara purchase, but she glosses over the opening to the war in the Waikato as coming simply after ‘war broke out again in Taranaki’….
    what she means is the Maori fired the first shots, in an ambush of soldiers, which actually had hoped to kill Governor Grey. Rewi Maniapoto was even known to have written to Taranaki Maori ahead of this stating in reaction to the occupation of a block of land there to ‘Kill The Pakeha’ 2 months later, the long prepared invasion of the Waikato kicked off.
    Both races have equal reasons for pride and regret indeed.
    
    Revisionist history does itself no favours if it fails to present sequences of events/context and motives.
    Governor Grey was quite right in seeking to break the King Movement militarily IMO (even though many innocents may have been caught up), as in terms of realism over idealism, the Maori King movement had allowed its flag (and in reality could not prevent) its warriors (Maniapoto and later Ngati Haua) going to Taranaki to fight and kill soldiers and settlers in conflicts which were outside of Waikato sphere of influence. While O’Malley makes a case that Waikato had an interest there, it is a weak one. Taranaki and Waikato were tribal enemies in the musket wars, and Waikato their conquerors (who were even paid money to recognise former title in Taranaki when the government purchases within those conquests were made).
    So when the King Movement becomes a military force, in armed conflict with the British Empire and Governor – they were a military target.
    They had to be broken and removed as a threat. Good on Governor Grey…..there, I said it!
    No brainer really. So just to say the Waikato War was about a land grab ignores the politics of Governor Grey and what happened before his 2nd term; the colonial government welcomed the confiscation of land, and the land even help pay for the costs of the war itself, but historians today make a very poor case for WHY European/British or Colonial forces ever went to war.
    
    We are poorly served in this sense by our modern academics. They know which side of bread is buttered.

      Thanks Fuzzy. You are, of course, referring to the Second Taranaki War, which started a few months prior to the invasion of the Waikato, and finished a few months after it finished. FWIW, I looked at this in some depth as part of my PhD research, and was able to link the two wars.
      
      Grey and General Cameron saw one of the biggest threats to an invasion of the Waikato as being an intervention by Taranaki Maori. Cameron countered this threat by deploying sufficient troops, with artillery and logistics support, to keep the Taranaki Maori at home throughout the invasion, but no more than was required for this: ie, no offensive operations If Taranaki went north to fight, their villages and crop production would be destroyed, and the undefeated population would face privation or starvation. That is why the British didn’t undertake any offensive military operations in Taranaki between July 1863 and May 1864. In modern military terminology, the Second Taranaki War was a fixing operation, intended to hold Taranaki Maori in place while Cameron achieved his strategic objective – the destruction or dislocation of the Kingite movement, and establishment of a 100+ mile buffer to the south of Auckland. Putting aside any other considerations about the the invasion of Waikato, it was a brilliant operational manouvre.
      
      I have given dozens of presentations on this to military and civilian audiences on this, and no-one has ever been able to fault the argument – especially when I present the overwhelming evidence in support.
      
      Simply put, the invasion of Waikato was one of the best planned and executed campaigns conducted by a British General in the 19th century. It’s success was determined by the logistical planning undertaken by Cameron’s staff, and the fixing of Taranaki Maori prior to and during the war.

  I think the reality is Yvette that what the British were doing and what the Maori were doing were coming from two different ways of understanding the world.
  
  The “Royal Charter” argument that Britain could somehow claim New Zealand by the “Law of Nations” without any Maori input is unconscionable. But so too is an interpretation of the Treaty which makes all non-Maori New Zealanders now and forever second class citizens.

  Nope. Zero sympathy from me. Commit 71 crimes (doubtless dozens more, he was charged with 100) in a country that gave you a chance and all you did was throw it back in their face, and you have no right to be there.
  
  He’s 43 years old and has a long history of increasingly-serious criminality, not showing up in court, lying about wanting to see his kids (they left 4 years prior) and plenty of other examples. I maintain any country has the right to determine who gets to live there and enjoy the benefits. It’s a shame we have to out up with him but he was born here, we have no choice.

It a pity it took Martin Doutre and others 14 years to pick up and use the research the ONZF had completed on the Littlewood Treaty document in 1989 and published in their book, “He iwi tahi tatou – We are not one people” in 1992.

This allowed the Government (Claudia Orange) and Maori 14 years head start to say, “The Littlewood document was just an early translation of the Maori version by an unknown author”, this was a lie, but and 99% of the people fell for it!

The same is going to happen with Queen Victoria’s Royal Charter/Letters Patent dated 16 November 1840, if we wait another 14 years before we use it.

    Hey Steve – Mike is somewhat of an idiot, to put it mildly, in his theories about NZ history and pre-history. He comes up with no specifics or data, he just disputes anything that mildly represents the truth.
    
    Hey Mike – Martin Doutre does have theories, but he also has evidence, and analytics to explain such evidence. If you find objects buried in NZ that are clearly man made, and carbon date to well before the Maori, it is not theory that people were here before the Maori. It is evidence.
    
    That is what real science is about – working with evidence, facts and data, and inductively constructing possible scenarios as how these things came to be. And once you have ruled out the impossible, what you are left with, no matter how improbable, is the truth.
    
    And who cares if Martin Doutre is an outlier? I do. I like outliers. Outliers are people that don’t fit the norm. That consider all possible scenarios, even if uncomfortable. Progress is not made by doing what makes you popular or living a boring beige life.
    
    Galileo, Wright Brothers, Rutherford, Alexander Graham Bell, Nikola Tesla, Richard Pearse, Thomas Edison, William Campbell, Satoshi Omura, Faraday, Harry Brearley, etc, were all outliers.
    
    And all of which we should be entirely grateful for.

      In the right mood he is very knowledgeable, so yeah, sometimes I uptick him.
      Whatever he does for a living must be tied to History somehow, so I don’t just dismiss him.

        I have recommended to others on this blog who might be interested in Doutre’s imaginative approach that they start with Kerry Howe’s excellent Quest for Origins: Who First Discovered and Settled New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
        Apart from being a good basic account of what is actually known about Pacific pre-history, Howe also examined the long history of theories, both mainstream and alternative about Polynesian voyaging and settlement. He places Doutre’s ideas, and those of others, in that appropriate context.
        Doutre’s work appears in a long continuum of fervid speculation that has endured from the late 18th century wonder that a ‘primitive’ people could have explored and settled remote island groups across the vast Pacific.

      That carbon dating is OK, but a better method is Thermoluminescence. I have seen the results done on a horse from the Tang Dynasty. The Professor who did it explained it to me. He was from Wollongong University – OZ.
      Very very accurate. He drilled 5 samples in the horse’s foot. It works by detecting radiation absorbed right back to the date of the sample’s last firing (the first)
      I did not see it of course. The Prof told me it could be dated to within 5 years of the first firing.

  If it is the same Martin Doutre who wrote ‘Ancient Celtic New Zealand’ then alarm bells and sirens for me.
  He fails to interpret conventional archaeological features from Maori gardens within volcanic soils, and turns them into collapsed stone houses. Piles of rocks that is, with no house floor, supports, or hearths or any other evidence.
  His pointing to the ‘sameness’ of rapa spirals and Celtic swirls is a poor attempt when geometric forms (like, say, Swastika or mesh/checkerboards etc.) appear due to common human sensibilities across neolithic potteries in Asia or Bronze Age steppe peoples.
  The ‘tall skeletons’ thing is the typical poor attempt to reassemble skeletons and lay them out so that actual tight fighting bones make the remains appear as over 6 footers.
  Collections of stones on hill tops become mathematically linked to celestial alignments. I don’t think he has ever scattered and handful of olives on top of a pizza before.
  Basically it was a lot of mashing a square block through a visibly triangular hole.
  Not a person to quote as a research historian when acts as a definition-example of a psuedo-historian.

    And if the Celts were here before Maori – or any other civilisation or culture like many odd theories propose – where are the ceramics?
    Even crude ceramics, such as can be found abundantly on other neolithic or early Iron Age sites 7,000 to 1,000 years old. Or an iron pin, or brooch. No surface finds, nor anything excavated of items that are otherwise ubiquitous to a culture.
    The answer is that the people proposing these theories know about as much about pre-history in NZ as they know about the archeology Celts or ancient China, or Phoenicians, or Vikings, etc etc; all of whom have been claimed to have been here.
    There are a few artefacts I might point to like the Tamil Bell, to propose visitors to our shores {shipwrecks?} aside from Dutch or British, but there is no evidence of settlement by anything other than archaic East Polynesians.
    There is no other material culture in evidence.

CALEB ANDERSON: Democracy – A beacon that flickered over the weekend

… Democracy requires that even the most powerful people are accountable, that issues are debated openly in the public domain, that we can rid ourselves of our politicians when we want to, and that no person’s vote should be worth more or less than another’s. Human nature is constant, people are often self-interested, and nepotism and corruption are not the exclusive domain of any one group, Maori included … we need safeguards. Maori themselves need safeguards.

The Maori party has called democracy a tyranny. Well if democracy is the tyranny of the majority, just wait for the tyranny of the minority which may just be around the corner.

The Maori Party, and some within Labour’s caucus (and cabinet), seem to have drawn a line in the sand. Give us exactly what we want, or else. I guess “or else” means civil unrest and marches on parliament. Perhaps we can console ourselves that parliament now has experience in managing this sort of unrest. Refuse to meet with them, legislate under urgency, ensure the media ignores them, or reports on them negatively, politicians can call them rivers of filth to their heart’s content, the speaker can turn on the sprinklers and Barry Manilow music, the police can don their riot gear, and the PM can spout that this is all the product of misinformation. Yes, parliament knows exactly how to manage this sort of thing now ….

With the ongoing claims by Maori to own our water and other spurious claims, isn’t it about time we started a campaign for IWI to start paying tax.
Maori are constantly claiming to be equal partners and if so why aren’t they paying tax.
We should all be writing to MPs etc demanding this

  Maori Businesses call themselves charities, but they only give to themselves and pay no tax.
  Some Marae, on the other hand, do help everyone as evidenced during Cyclone Gabrielle and we should be grateful for that.

  This isn’t about iwi paying no tax. It’s about charities paying no tax, and a clever lawyer convincing the government of the time that Maori Trusts that receive Treaty settlements (for the betterment of iwi members) qualify as charities.
  
  So it’s the charities law that needs looking at. And it’s not just iwi, it’s large commercial operations such as Sanitarium, as well as churches.

    You are incorrect about the situation. Most Iwi settlement funds are not charities. However, they do get a lower tax rate, on the basis that most of the iwi members have relatively low incomes and this a low personal tax rate.
    
    It is marae committees that are charities, like most other similar entities.

I guess twins may have been a curveball in this case, but even two under 3s is going to mean pricey childcare anyway.

Sounds from the article that it is a widespread issue and extending the government childcare subsidy to babies is desirable. There is this old fashioned thing called planning ahead.

  I found it refreshingly enjoyable to listen to a young MUM who has thought the exercise through, and obviously understands basic economics; rather than bleating about ‘more handouts needed’.
  She will, in years to come, be able to look at three well adjusted, no doubt confident, young adults, and know that they -(husband and wife I assume)- did what in the long run was best for their children.

Transpose that onto the water you have the pipes and dams and you have the water supply (rivers lakes etc) and multiple Iwis taking a cut. Just like electricity, we will pay for the pipes, probably a fixed charge based on the asset value at the point of takeover and then we will pay for water usage just like electricity.   I’m not 100% sure on the legalities around it but my understanding is that while it has been illegal to accept bribes from foreign entities, it has generally been excepted that the ruling elite (incl senators) will indirectly benefit from their positions post politics (by speaking tours / endorsements etc). This is how the Obamas and Clintons went from relatively low earners to multi-millionaires.
  
  While in office their families get positions they are unsuited to / would never have achieved otherwise. On the right we see attacks on Hunter Biden for his $1m per year role with a Ukraine based oil company when he has no experience in the industry and cant speak Ukrainian. On the left they attack Jarred Kushner (Trumps son in law) for his investment fund.
  
  Whilst these activities may not be legal they are ‘accepted’ as part of the business of being in power. Probably because they are so hard to define. Did Jarrad Kushners fund get its Arab investments because it’s a good fund or was it because of his relationship with Trump. Is Nancy Polosis husband the best sharemarket investor in the world or does he have insider knowledge?
  
  The real issue comes when the there is a direct link between the foreign actor and the person in a position of power.
  
  The Hunter Biden issue appears to be more of an issue as there may have been ‘direct corruption’. Written testimony from Tony Bobulinsku (former business partner with Hunter) indicates a 10% cut for tbe ‘big guy’, whom Bobulinsku identifies as Joe. This is backed by a number of leaked emails from Hunters Laptop to Joe Biden. We also have footage from Joe Biden using his position to remove a Ukrainian prosecutor who was looking into Hunters company. Whilst the US might have been wanting to remove this guy for other, valid reasons, it certainly has the air of a quid pro qou. With the amount of ‘stuff’ out there I am surprised the FBI haven’t run an investigation into this link. One would have thought it important to either know your president is corrupt or disprove the rumours. The fact the FBI seen hesitant to look into the Bobulinsku claim is concerning.

      I would expect the authorities to check up on that one as well. I guess the issue there is, can one become friends with wealthy people while they are a judge, and if they do can they ‘hang’ with said wealthy people. Can they accept gifts from them. I would assume there are laws around what oen must or must not do with gifts whilst a Justice.
      
      However I don’t see how Justice Thomas’s actions make any difference to my points we Hunter Biden. One could say the Biden case is clearer cut for two reasons…
      1) Bidens involves a foreign player
      2) Bidens case involves cash payments rather than holidays on yachts

… Comments by Kieran McAnulty, and others within Labour’s caucus, that it is safe to play around at the edges of democracy are dangerous in the extreme and stunningly ignorant. Co-government and democracy cannot co-exist. Co-governance is antithetical to democracy.

It’s interesting that no remnant of any of the original Maori canoes has ever been found. They’re only 800-odd years old, after all, not old in the grand scheme of things. Big, solid lumps of wood too. It would be fascinating to analyse the timber, to see where they came from.

It’s odd also that, at some point, Maori simply stopped long distance voyaging. Did they lose the ability to build large canoes? Forget how to navigate? Why did they not spend any time in Australia? Surely, they knew it was there.

Questions, questions.

      I am no sailor… so can’t assist with how and why canoe technology developed…
      
      But as an ecologist I would think that once folks had arrived in NZ, they discovered they were on a much larger land mass than any of the Pacific atolls they had set out from.
      
      In NZ they had a plentiful supply of fresh water, coastal protein (shell fish, fish and seals), and bird protein to keep them well nourished for a good few hundred years before population pressures came into play and some groups retreated inland (Tuhoe, Tuwharatoa) and others set off for new lands…. (Chatham Is; ?Subantarctic).

      The oldest canoe found in NZ dates from the 1400s and is made of Matai…. so cannot have been one of the canoes that brought the first folk to NZ.

  Evidence suggests Maori got to NZ in the 13th century (1250 or so). There was a little Ice Age from about 1400 – 1900 AD, which may have reduced temperatures and changed local weather enough to discourage further voyaging.

    We are told Matariki is how they got here, by star gazing and fighting the prevailing westerly winds. Food and drink must have been a problem across the vast Pacific as they had no way of preserving or distilling. I think a detailed look at the whole voyage may throw up laughable discrepancies.

  I have never seen, nor aware of the current existence, of the wicker screens said to have been used during the siege of Acre in 1241; but I believe they existed.
  
  Remains of archaic vessels have been found, but not any that would be claimed to be of the original ‘settlement’ transporting canoes.
  Polynesians were still making ocean going canoes/double hulled when Cook observed them, but in NZ, it was probably enough to feed yourself from the abundance of the land or the coast rather than going far to sea like the smaller-island populations did & still do.
  The fishing gear found in sites 600 years ago in NZ are also different to those used at the time of Cook, because the Maori were no longer fishing the same way for the same species.
  A good marker for early sites are ‘trolling lures’ of a type unknown to the later Maori – I have a few recovered from early sites, which I have surface collected.

Earlier this week, David Seymour, ACT party, held a public election meeting in Blenheim which attracted 300 people.
I know a bit about this town. That 300 turned up to a political meeting there was nothing short of amazing.
But, of course, according to many of the comments made on social media afterwards, the majority of those attending were old and Pakeha – as though that somehow minimised the impact.
But there was one comment which drew a comparison between how old Maori and Pakeha are perceived.
The status, experience and life knowledge of older Maori must be valued and respected. If the majority of the 300 had been older Maori, I don’t think their age would have been highlighted as somehow a negative.
But (and I wasn’t there) many commenters said that the meeting was a crock because so many were old, irrelevant white people – who just do not matter.
That is New Zealand today.

National will ban the sale of farms to foreigners for planting in forestry. Given the destruction wrought on many rural areas thanks to a loophole deliberately left in the Overseas Investment Act by the Labour/NZF government, this is very welcome news.

Shane Jones’ One Billion Trees project had a hugely negative effect on rural communities, especially when most of the money generated from carbon farming went offshore.

  However, as I have said many times, politicians are hopelessly conflicted on climate change. Massive forestry offsets will be pivotal in allowing New Zealand to get anywhere ‘net zero’ by 2050. If such offsets are to be greatly diminished, what plan does Mr Luxon have of reaching ‘net zero’? Of course he has no plan.

  Completely agree but with discouraging – rather than banning – conversion of farms to forestry.
  
  However, I do wonder if an exception could be made in the case of Hamish Edwards plan to create an international level golf course on land north of Wellington. So far his plan to spend $50mill is failing due to local Tukorehe iwi saying only 9 holes should be allowed due to some dead locals buried there and the Environment Court agreed. There is an appeal pending. Believe the sale to Mr Edwards will not go ahead if his plan is not allowed.
  
  The owner might like to consider selling their farm for pine trees as an alternative to attracting big investment and lots of well off visitors to a not well off area.

    Under MMP there has been the extraordinary COVID play that resulted in Labour gaining close to a landslide in 2020, but there has never been such an extraordinarily bad government as the current one under MMP.
    The last clown show was 1990 when the remnants of the Lange/Douglas government lost in a real landslide.
    The conditions are good for another landslide if only we had a credible opposition, but there’s a good chance of a change of government with a reasonable majority even so.

What is horrifying here is that, if the report is correct, the Ministry for the Environment advised Parker to refer the consent of NZ Steel’s operations to the EPA. They would only do this if they wanted NZ Steel to be shut down.

Mark Hanley asked a question yesterday about why people should vote for anyone except his most excellent wetness this election.
This may help, for National to win 4his election they will need a coalition with ACT, it doesn’t matter to the left what percentage of this coalition is wet or wetter, they will present it as NACT cutting services, pay for health care, callous ultra right wing.
For the non wet voter, vote for the people and policies you want in government. At 10 percent ACT will have little real power and influence in a Nat lead government, ask Rodney Hide how it was for him in Key’s government.
If you want Key and Ardern’s bad policies rolled back ACT has to get to a higher percentage.
Party vote ACT for a centrist coalition and vote your local National Candidate unless they’re a total prat.

    1) Matt is 100% correct in stating that ACT will need a decent percent of the vote to be able to influence National policy. Its simple fact, conversely National wants a high % vote to avoid being pushed around be Act.
    
    2) Your comment about Acts policies being removed (charter schools and three strikes) is grossly unfair. One could say, the fact the left moved so swiftly to remove them indicates they were sound right wing policy as opposed to some National policy they have kept. I liked the Key govt, but was hugely frustrated that he kept working for families. I understand the political issues but what point having power, Labour aren’t scared to make unpopular changes.
    
    3) There are clear policy differences between National and Act, for example around education funding. If you think the policies are the same why not vote Act instead of National.
    
    4) Agree re experience. It is very important to have skilled people in power, we have seen what happens if you don’t with the current government. However experience comes from more than just running big businesses, I would argue the Seymours political experience far out ways that of Mr Luxons. My concern with Act is the quality of the less well known Act candidates.
    
    Personally I feel Mr Luxon seems too much the business man, not wanting to put his head up and stand up for his principals. Where on the right wing does he stand? Is the free market, is he civil liberty, is he conservative, is he small govt? You don’t have to be all or any of these but with Luxon we just don’t know. With Key and English we did.

      Robo. I understand you want to raise the ACT vote but how does general and unsubstantiated abuse of National and Luxon increase ACT’s chances of being in government. ACT will need national?
      
      Isn’t explaining the reasons to vote for ACT a much more effective way of changing people minds.
      
      You correctly identified the problem regarding rightwing policies, they get removed. Implementing policies which increase wealth and happiness and stand the test of time is key (pun intended). National’s broadband fibre project is a great example.
      
      Business experts with experience managing large scale change in large organisations understand that ideological changes will not last. Act’s education funding model is a good idea but like 3 strikes and charter schools it will be removed with the stroke of a pen at the next change in government.
      
      I like Seymour’s honesty and intellect and I like his TOW referendum policy but (except for the end of life bill which is neither left nor right) his political experience has not resulted in enduring and meaningful change for NZers.
      
      So ACT supporters, please stop baseless abuse of the party and leader you will require to see any of ACT’s policies implemented.

        You have seen that naively implementing good policy with no consideration of medium term endurance / success is a definite fail!
        
        I considered an upper house of parliament but it is very expensive and can be won by the same party which wins government!

    A few things:
    I prefer ACT’s education policy + crime policies + wish to reduce costs + position on the RMA and various other things.
    ACT believes in reducing Govt meddling in our lives. This makes his “experience” less important. Also note that we’re not advocating he lead the Government.
    ACT only had very limited power under the last National Government and therefore didn’t have many policies get through. Charter Schools and 3 Strikes were both good policies which National weakened. The fact Labour got rid of them is irrelevant.
    Also, I’ve kept an eye on ACT’s MPs and they’ve all handled themselves well. Much better than a number of National MPs to be fair. Surely ACT’s 10-20 on the list are probably going to make better MPs than National’s 40-50 on the list?
    
    I’ll also argue that National has a very obvious core of religious conservatives. A solid core of people with Libertarian beliefs are needed to keep them in check.

        Referendum requirements should include changes to education (particularly the syllabus, testing, and national reporting against targets, implementation of race based policies, changes to pre-agreed pandemic plans, and changes to infrastructure investment.
        
        NZ needs a list of prioritized, costed, and regularly reported infrastructure requirements cemented in law so we can see when politicians are wasting our money on BS!

The Listener is setting itself up for howls of outrage, demands for right of reply again.( Remember it published the letter from the seven scientists).

This issue has an extract from a book by a woman GP about The Unfortunate Experiment as the Auckland women’s hospital enquiry was called.

She say “the evidence is strong that agendas such as a feminist one- to take the power from male doctors – and a political one influenced the Cartwright enquiry and affected its impartiality.” She believes the Cartwright enquiry was the origin of the severe decline in the overall health services and research into health care in NZ and says the medical profession’s status, its mana, was gutted during the enquiry and by Cartwright’s sweeping pronouncements.

Now I am not sufficiently informed to make any comment about what she has written but I do look forward to the next issue of the Listener.

Some may recall the Jane Tolerton article in the Listener on why Kate Sheppard wasn’t really the only one or the first to campaign for women’s suffrage.

    I have tried ChatGPT a few times over the last month. You have to be extremely careful with the information it throws up. In one case, I got some very helpful tips regarding a music project I am working on. But when I asked for some biographical info on an historical figure (an ancestor who was well known at the time), it served up a load of rubbish, effectively inventing details which I knew to be wildly inaccurate. When I challenged some of those, it responded “I’m sorry, I made a mistake”. I’ve had similar experiences on several other occasions.

      Very interesting article, Graham – but the mistake Hanff makes is treating the chatGPT software like a human. By that, I mean he is interrogating its intent; software doesn’t have intent. So where he finds things sinister or disturbing, it is because he is analysing the responses of software as if they were made by a person.
      That is a fundamental mistake. It is also why ‘it is not what is said, but who says it’ that is so important. Intent matters. And only people can have intent (well, ‘sentient beings’ is probably more accurate).

I’ve posted re all cause excess mortality a number of times, because it is concerning and it correlates with the beginning of the universal “vaccination” policy.

On the other side of the coin is the declining birth rate. This post is specific to Sweden. No doubt similar trends will be seen elsewhere, including NZ.

i remain distraught that the countries experiencing this are not making greater efforts to determine the cause. (or if they are, they are sure not sharing it) this seems an awfully serious matter to ignore and if the jabs caused this, we need to know and the data exists to comp birth rates by vaxx status 9 months prior and really put this to bed, but it’s not being shared. instead we’re getting a gish gallop of badly conceived and slanted studies on IVF, late term pregnancy, and miscarriages that are slanted, riddled with left truncation issues, and generally not suited for purpose.

at a certain point having “the officials” choose such a path rather than the simple one with simple definitive data that we know they have starts to look dispositive and like yet another game of “hide the ball.”

  Western Govts and their MSM cronies are all saying “Nothing to see here – move on”. BUT:
  
  1. Excess deaths continue to track 10%-25% above historic averages in countries that had high jab rates. This includes NZ that is approx 16%.
  
  2. Birth rates are dropping in these countries.
  
  3. Insurance companies are now reporting a significant increase in life insurance claims and a corresponding decline in profitability
  
  4. Cancer rates are up significantly, particularly in aggressive cancers. Sales of cancer drugs to treat these is showing a corresponding increase.
  
  Even if you are totally deluded and still think the jab is worth taking, you can not argue that the health data we are seeing isn’t a major concern. At the very least we should have a full and open investigation into what is happening.
  
  Maybe we even need a daily stand-up from the Pulpit of Truth to keep us up to date (shudder, gag, gag, puke…..)

What’s up with Jack Brazil the ex-Green Candidate, far-left activist who was shot. The reporting is extremely weird as the description of the event is being given from an anonymous source linked to the venue that was raided and cordoned off.

All we know from the Police is he was shot and it’s an “isolated” incident. (How do they know it’s isolated? What do they know?)

The rest of the details comes from an anonymous person affiliated with Yours Cafe:
“A person affiliated with the space yesterday told the Otago Daily Times Mr Brazil drove himself to the space after being shot in the liver, where he called for an ambulance but ended up getting a ride to hospital after flagging down a passing car.”

Then:
“A witness said the armed offenders squad raided the premises (of Yours Cafe) about an hour later. The space remained cordoned off while police investigated it yesterday”**

So the specific details of the crime that it was at another location and he drove to yours cafe is from a person affiliated with the Cafe itself, the only location cordoned off and under investigation.

I suggest it might not be true that Jack Brazil was shot at a different location. The only place with police cordons and being raided is YOURS cafe. So people associated with the venue don’t make reliable witnesses.

Yours Cafe is a “Worker owned & managed café/venue imagining a better food system & providing a space for radical action, music, art & cooperation” “Providing food for a post-capitalist future”

So was this just trendy woke talk or were they literally involved in “radical action” at YOURS CAFE. How many guns did they have at YOURS CAFe. Were they training for an activist event gone wrong or was it a personal grievance?

Come on police. What kind of weapon? Where was the blood /scene of the crime? By whom and how many? What was recovered in the raid? Was anyone arrested?

Police have said it is an “isolated incident”. So they clearly know a bit about what, why and who. They just haven’t told us.

  When I joined the RNZN in 1963 it was mandatory to sign up for 8 years. Anecdotal evidence from those who joined 2 to 3 years before me indicated that it was common for judges to give young men the option of a jail sentence or to join the NZ Defence forces.

  The report has a decent amount of detail and data. The general thrust is NZ, compared to US & Aust, over-cooked the demand stimulus by printing $60B and handing it out as free money. This was petrol on a fire of supply shocks, including domestic labour supply shortages because we were all locked up in our homes. We had very little COVID cases at that time, but we stimulated more than almost everyone.
  
  It also indicates that Robertson’s ‘transitory/temporary inflation’ is still with us and no sign of it going away anytime soon.
  
  Also of note, it says NZ has been insulated from some of the energy inflation that the likes of Europe have been hit with. If we had gas and electricity price hikes like Germany & UK then our inflation would be even higher still.

Generous Donor Gives $10,000 To Get Julian Batchelor’s Book To All The Farmers In The Waikato
Today we had a breakthrough. A big one. An incredible one.

A generous donor in the Waikato has paid for another print run of 20,000 of Julian Batchelor’s book. This means we are able to get one of Julian’s books to every farmer in the Waikato (as per the map above and the pink shaded areas) before his meeting in Hamilton on the 6th of May.

Now we just want donors in other areas like the Bay of Plenty, Northland, Central North Island, Taranaki, the Manawatu, Wellington, Marlborough, West Coast, Christchurch, Southland etc to do the same. To match this donor. Writing the book is the hard part. Some people, many people, have $10k sitting in their accounts, doing little except earning a bit of interest. Why not use it to help change our country? You can’t take it with you. Now is the time.

Another incredible donor is going to pay for the delivery. OMG!

This is turning out to be a huge team effort!

A different Hamilton businessman has paid for 5000 of Julian Batchelor’s books for delivery inside Hamilton City which means now all of the Waikato has been covered. This is huge!

As pretty much everyone knows, South Africa is on its knees with an energy crisis.

Over the last few years there have been both promises and belief that renewable energy will take them away from unreliable coal plants and save them.

Truth though is a bitch.

The power utility Eskom as over 6200MW of installed PV. So how much power was that generating at the peak demand point yesterday? 50%? 20? 10%?

Nope. 67MW. Just over 1%. Come winter and that number will drop off further to 0%.

Meanwhile the “unreliable” coal stations were generating at 50% of their nameplate capacity. Of course it would be a lot higher if they had been maintained properly.

  South Africa is far better for PV than NZ, so when we extrapolate to NZ conditions expect worse outcomes than SA.
  
  Megan Woods’ Kōwhai solar farm has a name plate capacity of 150MW. That’s 150MW under absolutely perfect conditions. About 125,000 pie warmers/30,000 houses.
  
  Like South Africa, our peak power demand is early evening. That 150MW becomes 1.5MW – only 1250 pie warmers/300 houses. That’s in autumn.
  
  1.5MW can be served by a generator the size of a horse trailer.
  
  Peak peak consumption is around 7pm in July. PV won’t be keeping 1 pie warmer going.

I must say I am surprised we are not hearing more wailing from the people out there with mortgages.

Many people took out $800k mortgages in the last few years for relative chicken feed interest rates. Now its up there at around 8%.

Where does a family find $64,000 a year just for mortgage interest?

After tax etc, that’s a whole $85k of salary gone just in paying interest!

Not a lot of commentators here making mention of Faux News deciding that settling with Dominion for nearly $790 million dollars is somehow preferable to defending the accusations of defamation in court. You don’t cough up over 3/4 of a billion dollars if you’ve done nothing wrong, do you!

        The discussions were based on ordering enough courses for all adults over the age of 18 in NZ, plus some extra for Pacific Islands we’re responsible for. We set the volume we wanted – it wasn’t Pfizer saying “You have to take [x]”. And I don’t believe there was ever any discussion of price vs volume, just the price was the price … and by pharma standards it wasn’t extreme (cost + a small margin). The Pfizer people were very reasonable, and not at all the demonic force so many here seem to be convinced about. My key memory was that they were exhausted … we were just 1 of over 100 countries they were dealing with.
        
        And we weren’t late in ordering. Our negotiations were happening alongside countries like Australia and Canada. Our *deliveries* were later than Canada, but that was a triage-like decision by Pfizer where they prioritised deliveries by need.
        
        Puzzled by the “Australia ordered 255 million doses”. One course per adult, two doses per course, about 20m adults in Australia … so I’d have thought they’d order more like 40m doses?

Luxon has given at least the Greens a boost with his farm policy. This includes resuming live cattle exports.

What comes to mind is the export of horses to China, and the $150,000 donation to National by a Chinese horse exporter in 2016. This was done through the Chinese importer’s NZ arm, the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry Co Ltd, which has since been put into receivership by the Bank of China.

Lin Lang, who for a time lived in Auckland, was importing NZ thoroughbreds and standardbreds to build up stock in the Chinese province, Inner Mongolia, ahead of speculation that China would allow horse racing with gambling outside Hong Kong.

The Company’s livestock was located at three stud farms; Windsor Park Stud in Cambridge, Highview Stud in Hamilton and Willow Glen Stud in Waimate.

Those who sold horses to Lang might be embarrassed by horse welfare in the video linked to below. It was taken in the backblocks of China.

Animal welfare is contentious in international dealings with China. A bizarre issue in China is the rise of donkey farming. These animals are being harvested largely for the use of their skins. International animal welfare group, Donkey Sanctuary says almost five million donkey hides a year are need to satisfy demand for a Chinese gelatin-based medicine called ejiao.

Pakistan is now developing donkey farming to export animals to China.

What is going on with donkeys in China is bizarrely reflected in Youtube channels with tens of thousands of subscriber-watchers who follow donkey hoofs being trimmed, or in the case of mules and some horses, new shoes fitted. Some animals, particularly those being in Inner Mongolia and Manchuria are being re-shod by experienced farriers using more acceptable restraints, and are in better general condition.

FFS, National, please don’t think of allowing NZ farmers to ship donkeys to China.

Secondly, on its policy of what amounts to cheaper farm labour from abroad, over-all, National could lose some rural votes. The number of farm owners and their families is shrinking as farm sizes grow and more frams are company owned. Ratio of farm workers to farm owners must be rising.

It will be interesting to see if there is a repeat with the new bivalent COVID-19 vaccine booster. On 1 April, all adults aged 30 and above became eligible for this booster.

It is early days. However uptake has been slow to put it mildly. There are about 2.7 million adults aged 30 and above. As at 18 April, about 38,000 have taken up the booster. That is 1.4 percent of those eligible.

  On the one hand you know the uptake will be, at most, 85%. So let’s call it 3.4 million out of an addressable population of 4m.
  
  On the other hand, if you only order 3.4m courses (2 doses per course) then you open yourself up to “You didn’t buy enough for us all, so clearly you don’t love us” complaints.
  
  So you buy the full 4m courses, knowing you will throw many away. Because politically that’s the right thing to do.
  
  Presumably the same political maths played out with the booster rounds too.

      When I left school I trained as a chef following which I worked in one of Christchurchs’ best restaurants. I was absolutely horrified at the food hygiene. Raw meat kept on the floor of the chiller, cooked and raw meats stored together etc.
      
      It took me years to want to eat at a restaurant again.

Well this article puts paid to Grant Robertson saying that the NZ deficit was nothing out of the ordinary.

But the latest deficit, $33.9 billion or 8.9% of GDP in the year to the end of December, is as ANZ chief economist Sharon Zollner puts it, “beyond what anyone would consider sustainable”.

Sounds pretty bad

If the country doubled its wine exports and leading technology exporter Fisher & Paykel Healthcare miraculously tripled its export revenues, that would trim the deficit by $5b.

If people also completely stopped importing cars and car parts, that would close the gap by a further $11.5b, halving the deficit – but no more than that.

That’s a lot of economic activity

The IMF observed last week, that as a proportion of GDP, the deficit was the largest posted by any developed economy, bar Greece, and forecast that while it would fall to 7.2% of GDP next year and 5.3% in 2028, only Cyprus would then be faring worse.

Greece. We’re being compared in economic terms with Greece.

What a cluster, Grant.

  @Swifty whether or not you think Jacob Rees Mog is an Fwit (I lean that way) or not some of the points he makes apply here as well, except NZ has a lot of hydro and some geothermal. Our wind generation is risible, currently it’s 54 Megawatts out of a possible 1 Gigawatt of installed capacity and 5 Gigawatt demand. Wind isn’t going to do it for a long time.

Can someone explain to me why it is terrible animal cruelty for a wild cat to be shot at with an air rifle, but not so bad for the possum, rat, rabbit, stoat and weasel?
A soft numpty from SAFE and a young woman from the vets expressed emotion and outrage on Te News this evening that some kids in North Canterbury trying to raise funds for their school, could shoot a wild cat which then might run away and be in agony for weeks.
No mention of same for the poor old rabbit or possum though.
Obviously not all animals are born equal.
PS – a while back I heard a talk from a scientist who is monitoring the Kea populations in parts of the South Island. What is the biggest threat to the viability and survival of the Kea mountain parrot?

I have read that on 10 September election advertising can begin. I have also read that 3 months before the election expenses start to count. Three months before the election would be 14 July. Why is it that I see huge ads for Webb and McLellan “working for Christchurch” on Durham Street and Waltham Road in the month of April?
