        The drug that causes far and away the most social issues is alcohol. To be consistent, do you think alcohol should be banned as well? I suspect a lot of people give themselves a pass when it comes to their “beersies” and the like. Personally, I could live with all of them being banned.

        I don’t know about pot causing mental illness, but problems do arise when one has a mental illness and stops medication – then self medicates with pot/weed is where many problems start. They are giving me drugs, so I will have my own drug.
        Combination of both can be a nightmare.

  An interesting idea, but the article describes it as ‘silicate rock dust’ which is basically the new asbestos for health and safety in construction/heavy industry – cutting engineered stone bench tops probably the most high profile example.

    Most rock dust applications I’ve done have been in blends that have little visible dust. There have been concerns raised about serpentine which is fairly commonly used as a magnesium source by sellers of other magnesium products.

Tucker is self-aware, has a lot of thoughtful insights and more compassion than any of the politicians or activists that decry him. Though that is not at all unexpected. It is why the left so hated him. He could see through their hypocrisy and was quite prepared to call it out.

    Very disappointed to see Andrew Bolt cop out to the corporate line in his negative comments about Carlson.
    That was a wake up call for me.
    So much for trust in the news media, even for the so called conservatives.
    As for Fox, their drift to the left has been steady, starting with Glenn Beck’s departure and most recently, Dan Bongino.
    Cable TV news is now a dinosaur.

      I was surprised to see Bolt’s tone on it but he did give a good insight – can’t be bigger than Fox. And I think that’s the real issue. Fox will survive and I’m sure Tucker will do very well too. But Fox couldn’t have Tucker get any bigger without it hurting it in the long term.

        I appreciated this theory around the Fox-Dominion settlement:
        
        Fox News, one very plausible theory goes, was settled because they didn’t want Rupert Murdoch and top executives to take the stand, because Dominion would have attempted to read their emails into the record, in which they state in no uncertain terms how much they absolutely LOATHE the populist base, the real conservatives.
        
        Murdoch himself has made brief quips over the years that certainly line up with such a theory.
        
        Also I’d never heard of Irina Briganti before reading that post but she sounds like some piece of work inside the Fox organisation.

  Went to the meeting in Tauranga last night. Full house. Great talk by Nicole McGee and David Seymour was on form as usual. Great speech full of common sense ideas. Party vote ACT is the only way to keep National on track to reverse all of Labour’s wacky laws. I could see David as PM one day.

      Then the opposition really need to get a move on and address the covid response assault inflicted on a substantial percentage of the population which they supported at the time.
      They have a ‘get out of jail’ card – they can say they were lied to at the time.

        What Covid shows is that, except at the margins, they all have to assent to the “political consensus” if they want to remain in the Club, even if that consensus is completely counter to reality. The opinion-shapers and ideological enforcers in the media arm will destroy anyone who doesn’t play along. This is why narrative uniformity and censorship of contradictory ideas is so important. They aren’t really an opposition, they are part of a power-sharing arrangement wherein the public are convinced that they are actually making a meaningful choice on election day.

      The future of NZ is not about re-examining the parliament protests or vaccine mandates (far from the vote winner some people pretend it is).
      The future is more influenced by the Aotearoa education syllabus, co-government being embedded in all mechanisms of control, how we treat our children-including gender politics and climate alarmism, intergeneration welfare, doubling down on victim and oppressor narratives, wasteful and obscene spending, threats to free speech, the cost of petrol or a block of cheese, law and order and the increase of violence and gang numbers in NZ, etc, etc, etc….

The damage caused by this idiotic Govt will last for generations. The list is too long, and I’m sure you all can add to my examples.

1. Ban oil & gas exploration overnight. Which big CapEx O&G companies, or even mining companies are going to come back to NZ even with a change of Govt? (None)

2. Take away tax deductibility on interest costs for landlords. How many investors are going back to rental property even after a change of Govt? (Bugger all)

3. Close borders and lockdown the entire population overnight. Who in their right mind would invest in tourism/hospo – or any small business for that matter? (Bugger all). Even The NZ Initiative report this week did NOT rule out future border closures and lockdowns. FFS??!!!

The economic risks of stupid/crazy Govt policy is now extreme. Capital goes where it is treated best. People go where they are treated best. It’s not NZ.

    Ian – you seem to be a bit lost, what reduction in costs? The communists (Labour) have excluded interest as a tax-deductable cost. So a landlord’s costs have gone up (higher tax). And of course, interest rates are now back to almost normal historic averages. All this is now being passed onto tenants as the user of these rental properties.
    
    Taxing housing when there is a lack of housing is like taxing food to solve a famine. The Commies tried that also, causing more starvation. But hey – keep on reading your Marxist books and deluding yourself.

    Every time someone buys an old house it frees up capital to build a new house. It doesn’t really matter which house they bought – it still injects capital into the market.

    That’s the same argument that pushing up the minimum wage won’t make your groceries/coffee more expensive (pause for laughter).
    
    A landlord is in business. Just like your corner coffee shop/grocer/whatever. When costs go up, then there are a few options:
    * Reduce profits – maybe going into a loss. Not sustainable.
    * Sell up and move into some other business. Not sustainable.
    * Increase prices to keep the business sustainable.

    If you were a watcher of the effects on rentals, like you seem to be, it is odd that you need to ask poorly formed rhetorical questions.
    Landlords exited the rental market. Fact.
    I had friends who lost their rental home since the Landlord did not want to continue with it. And even Landlords who sold up (a neighbour), since the value of the home as a once-off was better than operating under an increasingly costly and constrained environment for landlords.
    And in these cases the government driven changes were the cause. Remove incentives, and make it riskier and harder. Bravo.
    
    So Landlords might not ‘build’ houses for rental, but people who owned an extra home would often offer them as rentals – these days the houses in my examples are not unoccupied, but they are not occupied by renters.
    So the government has those old ‘unintended consequences’ whereby they make things worse overall.

  And the CRI charged with fostering earth science in NZ no longer undertakes research into petroleum geology. Focus is now on “sustainability” and “renewable energy sources”.

I have heard a number of media commentators asking what the point of the report into how much Tax the rich pay was, if the government is not to take any action as a result.

I’ll tell you what the point was.

Distraction.

Nothing unifies a population more than giving them an enemy to unite against, and this has been a common tactic amongst propagandists for centuries.

Be that the Communists in Russia, China and Cambodia, or the national socialists in Germany, or the fascists in Spain and Italy. If you can find a small group to apportion blame to, you deflect from your own shortcomings.

At the very real risk of Godwinning the thread, there are elements of this in the latest actions from David Parker. I doubt it’s deliberate on his part, but highlighting the rich in this way has changed the narrative somewhat…

At the same time the Media seems to miss that Government Tax revenue has increased under this government from 75 billion in 2017, to 110 billion in 2020, or in percentage terms, by 46%.

The question should be, what the hell is the government doing with all this money?

  I think they realised that it’s idiotic saying your unsold property or other assets are income fFS, how can you be expected to pay tax on something that is material only snd not earnings fFS, this is pointing to a CGT after the election if these assholes get back in, and everyone will be paying it, you can’t discriminate against rich when you tax capital gain. KiwiSaver will be hit, They will say it don’t be, but if CGs are taken when the stock is sold of course it will happen, and the beautiful thing is, the brain washed left will not know, the earnings will be less but they won’t see that.

    IMHO if the toxic trio are the Government after the elections He Puapua and CGT will be back with a vengeance. The Greens and MP will insist and Labour will be glad and pass it off as part of the deal.
    We are moving away from being a property owning democracy so fewer people will be impacted as regards residential property and most Labour voters dont and wont have much in their KS accounts.
    This is part of a massive transfer of wealth from the Baby Boomers to the younger generation by stealth. I suspect Death Duties and Stamp Duties will also be added. They are common overseas so Labour can point to that as their excuse. Expect to see a 45%/50% tax on high incomes and an expansion of WFF so more get tax credits instead of paying any tax.
    The result will be a flight of capital and a flight of young talent to Oz and further afield.

      The hard working middle income pay the most Tax.
      The wording can be used in different ways.
      Super Rich pay X Dollars.
      Rich pay X dollars but they are a larger group paying than Super Rich, so they may pay more Tax than the Super Rich.
      Then we go down to the scale of the Working rich/poor. This a huge group, the largest group. The Tax take total on the largest group is of course more than even the Rich, or even Super Rich.
      Why? Numbers of Taxpayers in that Working rich/poor group far exceeds those above.

    Just because people haven’t rolled over and sworn fealty to National/Act doesn’t make them sheep, it’s the opposite.
    The problem is the politicians, not the voters, who haven’t seen enough discernible difference in policy between the opposition and Labour.
    Add to that, many are still waiting for a simple acknowledgment that all of the covid policies were wrong and those negatively affected deserve an apology. The opposition don’t even want to talk about it. That’s cowardly.
    
    A dual statement along these lines and I believe National/Act will get an instant 10 point bump to where they should be. Miles ahead of the shower of excrement holding the reins of power at the moment.

  They’re definitely gaslighting us.
  Including unrealised gains was bad, clearly done to inflate the “income” so the ETR was lower. They argue that this is a timing issue relating to Capital Gains which they believe should be taxed.
  
  Then why did they include imputed rents on houses? Clearly they were trying to increase the income as high as possible but are they also effectively claiming that they believe this should be taxable?
  
  Why has no-one in the media called out this (on either side)? National should be aggressively suggesting that Labour want to tax our homes (like TOP). It would be fun seeing Labour explain and walk back their calculations for the “Economic Income” of rich people.
  
  Taxing imputed rent is effectively a tax on 5% of the value of your house (so 1.65% per year at the 33% tax rate). That would kill Labour.

  Float some dodgy research, demonise ‘the enemy’ – in this case the rich pricks, and sit back and see how the public react. If the public react as they hope, and calls grow that ‘something must be done!!!’, then they can float a CGT as a response to the public pressure. If the public keep quiet, they move on.
  
  Let’s be clear – the left want more tax, including a CGT, all branded under the ‘fair share’ banner. But…..they learnt their lesson from the last time they talked about tax and, in particular, CGT. This report is prepping the voters.

  My partner inherited a small portfolio of buildings (which he has since grown)…….not only have the TENANTS spent literally millions on improvements over the years, pay the outgoings, and some have been there for forever – plus you hardly ever hear from them except at ROR time.

  Not necessarily. Buying is not always the right choice and renting away from where you have bought can be the smart move.
  
  There does seem to be an issue with problem tenants, the sort who intimidate neighbours and destroy property, but can’t be moved on. Surely it should be possible to write rules that allow for immediate eviction in these cases?

As per the IPCA whitewash of the actions of police at the Wellington protest, we are going to get another whitewash with the Royal Commission into the covid response. In fact, it’s worse than that.

The title says it all really: Lessons Learned from Aotearoa New Zealand’s Response to COVID-19 That Should Be Applied in Preparation for a Future Pandemic.

Essentially, we want to learn how to do it all again better, harder, faster and more strictly. There is another pandemic just around the corner and we want to have everything in place to control the population.

The following matters are OUTSIDE the scope of the inquiry:

particular clinical decisions made by clinicians or by public health authorities during the COVID-19 pandemic,

how and when the strategies and other measures devised in response to COVID-19 were implemented or applied in particular situations or in individual cases,

the specific epidemiology of the COVID-19 virus and its variants,

vaccine efficacy,

the recent reforms to New Zealand’s health system, including the organisational arrangements for public health services,

the judgments and decisions of courts and tribunals and independent agencies such as the Ombudsman, the Privacy Commissioner, or the Independent Police Conduct Authority relating to the COVID-19 pandemic,

the operation of the private sector, except where the private sector delivers services integral to a pandemic response,

particular decisions taken by the Reserve Bank’s independent monetary policy committee during the COVID-19 pandemic,

any adaptation of court procedures by the judiciary during the COVID-19 pandemic,

any adaptation of parliamentary processes during the COVID-19 pandemic,

the conduct of the general election during the COVID-19 pandemic.

That is a completely farcical waste of time and money.

As the author says:

What do New Zealanders actually want to know?

Why the definitions of many relevant things changed prior to this event – pandemic, virus, case, vaccine, herd immunity?

What happened to natural immunity?

Why were existing influenza pandemic plans (that advocated against quarantining healthy contacts, contact tracing, border closures, widespread use of masks and other restrictions which governments suddenly imposed) thrown out?

Why were New Zealanders locked out of their own country?

Why was fear weaponised?

How many New Zealanders have been killed or harmed by the measures forced on the country – lockdowns, social isolation, loss of businesses?
How many New Zealanders have been killed and harmed by the ‘vaccine’?

How was it possible to mandate a medical procedure when it did not prevent transmission?

Why did the courts cease to function in the interest of New Zealand citizens?

What made doctors abandon their oaths and ethics?

Why were doctors and scientists censored so heavily?

Why has the mainstream media been turned into a propaganda arm of government?

HOW DO WE AVOID THIS EVER HAPPENING AGAIN?

I believe every single one of those are the actual questions we need answers to, not the pathetic proposed inquiry.

It looks like there will need to be another inquiry. The one the people want. The one where all the questions get answered rather than swept under the rug. The one where the dead and injured are acknowledged and compensated (if such a thing is possible). The one where the silenced and censored get to speak. The one where perpetrators are held to account.

I couldn’t agree more.

  Excellent news – who would’ve thought the UK would suddenly find some nads? Rishi Sunak standing up for the rights of women, Lord Coe doing the same with sport, and now an entirely appropriate sentence that almost fits the crime.
  
  He wasn’t jailed for “a peaceful process” or because he was frustrated at the apparent lack of action by the UK government to listen to him rather than make their own decisions, doubtless in possession of much more actual data. He was jailed for the disruption and economic cost he caused, which is exactly what he wanted.
  
  Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Let’s hope the wankers that interrupted the snooker get even longer.

On the CGT issue, there seems to have been a dearth of discussion around Kiwisaver. Each time someone switches provider or plan, any capital gain is realised. Equally, at 65, if you close up your Kiwisaver account to apply it to some other investment, there is realised capital gain. Likewise with drawing money to buy a house or for emergencies. Many Kiwisaver plans, particularly the more aggressive ones, are in growth rather than dividend producing, investments. There are over 3 million Kiwisaver account holders. Do we think they might rebel at having to cough over 20% of their capital growth? Or would there be an unprincipled exemption for Kiwisaver as there was to have been for the family home? Would that then lead to people investing more into their Kiwisaver, as will inevitably happen with the family home? Would that take funds away from businesses and other forms of assets? And what would the Bill of Rights think about an exemption granted to those under 65 which is unavailable to those over that age?
