        Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction, which contains these helpful definitions:
        
        Schedule 1 contains substances most clearly related to a chemical weapon. They have been specially developed for or have already been used as chemical weapons and there is a high risk that these substances or their precursors will be used for that purpose. These chemicals have little or no use for peaceful purposes in commercial or industrial activities. Examples are VX, sarin, mustard gas and the biological toxins ricin and saxitoxin.
        Schedule 1 substances shall not be produced, acquired, retained or used at all by State Parties outside their territories, except in limited quantities for research, medical or protection purposes.
        Schedule 2 contains substances that pose a significant risk for use as a chemical weapon, or as a precursor of a substance from List 1 or List 2, part A. These substances also have a limited use in not large quantities for other purposes than a chemical weapon. In large quantities, there is a good chance that they are intended for use as a chemical weapon. Examples are amiton and BZ.
        Schedule 3 contains substances that pose a risk for use as a chemical weapon or as a precursor thereof. However, these substances are also used in large quantities for purposes other than for a chemical weapon (dual-use). Examples are phosgene and hydrogen cyanide.

    Isn’t it funny’ when the now multi billionaire that failed at becoming prez ( I feel sick saying his name) stated with global warming in the late 80s. We were promised no rain, drought stricken farming countries, snd famine across the world thanks to lack of rain.
    
    It’s become very noticeable the same fool as done a 360 and changed global warming to climate change, and we will be flooded with all the abundance of rain and oh a few droughts ( like we have always had) not to mention huge snow falls instead of no snow or ice on high country mountains.
    
    I also remember him spouting that Manhattan would be underwater by 2006 I was there in 2003 my missus sister has lived in New Jersey since 1999 and she tells me when she travels to work on Wall Street that the water level at pier 24 is exactly the same as 1999 apart from the tidal difference that will never change.
    
    I have always stated that climate has changed from when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s but it is not created by man and cars, or cows and farting.
    
    The only thing I agree with is having new infrastructure built to cope with bigger storms , they go it in Europe, look at the well below sea level of the Netherlands for how to do infrastructure

For those wondering how we will manage with standard societal functions once Net Zero/ zero emissions gets implemented, the answer is out there. You won’t own property, but have to lease it. It will only be mud (rammed earth) huts, anyway. And of course there will be 15 minute cities, so travel is severely constrained. Plenty of job opportunities but mainly for the new manual labouring class. An official committee’s report has come out in the UK that will do doubt be duplicated here – help keep our place as fast followers of the fantasy. Basically, no development will be allowed. This is newspeak described as “minimise new construction”.

The only bricks, glass, concrete and steel that can be used has to be recycled and with a rationed supply. No plastic used with timber supply limited (how do you get wood from growing forest to building site without fossil fuels?). To those thinking I’m exaggerating, I can quote part of the Executive Summary; “Eliminating embodied emissions will bring far more fundamental changes. There is great potential to use less material without compromising functionality. However, while being essential, transformative, and creating vast potential for innovation, efficiency alone is not enough to reach zero emissions. The shape of the urban environment will also change, allowing for denser living and reduced transport needs and energy consumption. Yet this is still not enough. To bridge the gap, the pallete of available construction materials must also transform, eliminating those with inherently emitting process and bringing forward nonemitting alternatives. These will include: naturally low-energy materials such as stone, earth and timber; components reused and repurposed from demolition; and electrified supplies of recycled steel, cement and bricks, albeit limited by a constrained supply of non-emitting electricity under high demand. “
If they get their way, we will have a new Dark Ages. The only question is when the elites will let the hoi polloi know their vision for the future? They definitely wouldn’t want a vote on it.

      The real goal is austerity under the guise of a moral imperative, surveillance and control to enforce this austerity, and a consequent flattening of the middle class with little or no social mobility. A bifurcation of society, kind of like in Brazil. And all with the aim of keep the existing powers in place. In other words, completely self-serving at the expense of everyone else.
      
      Why? The current system has reached its limit and is about to break down, and if it were to break down without an alternative already in place, then the existing power could potentially lose their existing status to someone else who takes the initiative. And that can’t be allowed to happen at any cost. So in the service of the interests of others, you will will eat the bugs, you will own nothing, and you will be damn well happy about it.

      You only need to look at Dunedin’s experience at stadiums to see what a waste of public money they are. First rule by the proponent – tell lies about the cost, tell lies about the economic benefit, protect professional sport from contributing to the cost, ignore ongoing maintenance and lost opportunity on spending the money on what the community really needs.
      
      In the end, less than 20 people in Dunedin caused the white elephant to be built. Thousands protested against the thing.
      
      If stadia are that important for professional sport, let them pay to play.

    Elective surgeries are getting rarer. Prostate Biopsy, Cubital Tunnel, Rotor Cuff are ‘Elective Surgeries’ Fact is these things give better quality of life – and we can’t have that.

        Not critical – except to the person needing it. Back in 2009 I had all sorts of problems with my left arm and hand. Numbness to burning. Herniated disc between C6 and C7 in the neck. It required disection and fusion. From the day of the injury to surgery was 5 months, 5 months of pain. Thing is it was not fixed, so I needed same thing at C5 and C6. Apparently I am wired different. Anyway, another 4 – 5 months wait. Auckland Health Board had a huge waiting list and I could not wait. Surgeon got me into Midddlemore, different Health Board. It was a training lesson for about 20 people. I was the guinea pig. Second surgery fixed it.
        Then the real fun. I fought Accident Compensation for 7 years and won.
        
        So yes, ‘elective’ means ‘non-critical’ except to the injured person. I would have been better off if I broke my neck. Sheet metal folder was the culprit.

        My Prostate Cancer is malignant, meaning it can spread, so I am on Active Surveillance program. Biopsy under anesthetic every 12 months and MRI every 12 months (6 months in between)
        If it spreads it goes to the bones – spine and hip.

  Cool. As part of this change you propose do they stop going cap in hand to the government and council for annual funding? Presume a change in regulations would mean they wouldn’t need public money to build this ‘vision for the future’ because it’s so economically attractive the private sector can’t wait to fund it?
  Why is that so many people on the right seem to have no issue with throwing vast sums of money at these stadiums? If they were so economically wonderful as the proponents say. wouldn’t the private sector have swooped in by now?
  The fact is they are bloody great big white elephants – they never stack up and taxpayers / ratepayers are stuck paying the bills for ever.

      While I can sympathise with your argument, to an extent, as someone who has actually read some of the actual business cases on these – and not the PR spun bullshit ones for public consumption – they never, ever stack up without significant public investment. Worse, the economic benefits are always marginal at best, but usually hopelessly optimistic – once you’ve read a few and know the phrases, you can tell when they are being optimistic. That is the real reason no private sector consortium ever builds a stadium to tap into this supposedly lucrative revenue stream – it doesn’t exist, therefore you get the usual waffle about generating economic benefits and so, but fundamentally they don’t stack up without massive public funding. And this isn’t just an NZ perspective – even in the free market bastion of the USA, these stadiums tend to be leeches on local taxpayers.
      Yep, political interference doesn’t help but it’s not even remotely a major reason why the private sector doesn’t go ahead and build these ‘gold mines’!

  Whatever happens the funding should be via the NZEFU, NZ Cricket and so on as a percentage of their usage and rented out to contestants with ticket sales cover costs.
  The taxpayers and ratepayers should not be rogered by those with grandiose shiny projects and pet projects.
  Use the stadium in Dunedin and Christchurch as examples of what not to do.
  If these ideas are so damn good then private investment in the stadia should be a no brainer.

  Every single event used to need a resource consent I was once told. To check if the facilities, parking, toilets, etc etc had changed since the last time.
  
  $95,000 a time for the inspections and the consent!
  
  Then they were limited to how many events a year they were allowed to hold…. etc etc.
  
  And then we all wonder why Eden Park runs at such a massive loss!

    Would respectfully disagree, based entirely on my own circumstances. I came from an extremely dysfunctional family, had incredibly shit primary schooling and was effectively saved by 3 amazing teachers in high school that brought out the best in me. Amazing teachers can make a big impact, regardless of the students age or background.

      I was the same. Only at High School did I really want to learn. 3 great Teachers in Metalwork, Math, and Science. That was all I really needed. Math was great because I understand numbers. At that time I could multiply 3 numbers against 4 in my head! Often wondered how I would have turned out choosing Accountancy instead of Engineering.

        Multiplying works with percentages. Understanding percentages and reading/creating graphs is important.
        I guess I am quite lucky to understand this – I know instantly if the numbers are not right. Many times I would take a comp drawing back upstairs to the boss and say this is not right. The pathway to the final length are different – I cannot make this.

      You are one of those exception Peejay – but how many of those type of teachers are still in the system. They weren’t in Primary for you. Remember Primary teachers are now paid what Secondary ones are. And the pay doesn’t differentiate between star teachers and the rubbish time-servers.

      PeeJay I’d posit that a huge number of factors “kept you on the rails” so to speak.
      Examples:
      Genetics
      Surrounding culture.
      The era in which you lived.
      Your general family culture (eg religious/woke/ criminal/military/police/druggy/alcoholic/sexual abuse).
      The people you ended up hanging around with (outside of family).
      Where you lived.
      How generally stable your upbringing was (regardless of extremely dysfunctional incidents).
      Whether or not you were brought up by both biological parents.

        The Dunedin Study shows that a childs future can be very accurately predicted from a very early age based on a variety of factors. There will be exceptions but the study is internationally recognised.

  I don’t think there is anything wrong with an egalitarian society where everyone has equal rights and equal opportunities. Everyone should be equal under the law and have the same opportunity to succeed – what you do with it is entirely up to you.
  
  What I have a problem with is equality of outcome regardless of ability or effort, or worse, more rights (or excuses) based on your ethnicity.

I will be going to the event at Sky City Auckland on 4 June. The cost is only $50.

        That’s actually perfectly true. Whyte is an academic philosopher, and not cut out for the compromises that are inherent in getting things done politically. He’s a very smart man but was a hopeless politician for that reason. Seymour is cut from a different cloth, which is why he has taken ACT from near-oblivion to a solid base of about 12%.

    Maybe it’s to pay for the hire of the venue. Maybe it’s to help with the costs of travelling around the country.

        Great demonstration of what democracy and freedom looks like.
        
        These guys require a payment to go to the venue and hear then speak.
        
        You don’t want to go to it. Great. You neither have to hear what you don’t want, nor pay for someone else to hear it.
        
        The alternative is that (eg) all ratepayers or taxpayers, ie you, fund this. You would rightly be annoyed if that were so.
        
        But consider this. That is exactly what Labour and the Greens expect. All that talk about public funding of political parties? That’s so they don’t have to bother with the minor detail of appealing to anyone and generating funding.
        
        So while you may dislike the ACT party and not want to attend their events, you should at least respect them for not expecting you to pay for it.

In Wellington for the weekend. It has been a while since my last visit.

Very heavy traffic on the Uber ride from the airport. I noticed the new multi million dollar pedestrian crossing on SH1 next to Evans Bay. I asked the Uber driver about it. He laughed, saying he had never seen the lights turn red. Never seen a pedestrian use it.

Traffic crawled towards and through Mount Victoria Tunnel. Emerging from the tunnel at walking pace, I am greeted by a large billboard with the smiling face of Julie Ann Genter “Your Wellington based Green MP”. 😂

    I think their straw-person rented and didn’t own any assets. They did not use as a sample a classic middle class salaried person who has their home, KiwiSaver and another investment vehicle, nor did they include a small business owner who was building up a Jim’s Mowing franchise, or was the owner of a small building/electrical/plumbing supplies business.

Typical example of life under Labour

Auckland Hospital introduced a limit on C Sections which could be done under private specialists. Rationale seems to be Māori and Pacifica were missing out as they couldn’t afford them and the public service didn’t have enough resources.

So rather than fix the underlying issue eg get more resources they claim lack of equality and pull everyone down to the lowest level.

    All C-sections that occur before labour starts (contractions) are defined as ‘elective’ – despite most being medically necessary. The ‘too posh to push’ is a myth.
    
    Our 3x kids were all C-sections due to a smaller that average pelvic opening – both mother and baby could have died in childbirth.
    
    Despite this, we were castigated by the midwife for suggesting that US scans were necessary, were told by a GP not to bother, and told the OB-GYN that we would pay for US scans privately to check (we are both medical so have passed Anatomy 101).
    
    Once scans were completed the OB-GYN scheduled the C-section and told us were were lucky it was caught in time!

  There are 2 issues as I see it. The first is that NZ has midwife led childbirth and since HC they have a very powerful voice in the MOH. Their business model is vaginal birth at all costs because otherwise they are handing over care to doctors. This is supported by the WHO who want only 18% CS rate if I recall correctly, because that is what happens in impoverished third world nations and we can’t have developed countries doing better. The second is that with prophylactic antibiotics if a woman is going to have 1 or 2 children then CS is safer for both mom and baby, and the costs of childbirth are lower for them than those having vaginal deliveries.

    Not so, Mike. Journalism used to be about telling the truth.
    I was a member of a subbery for 20 or so years.
    It was a while ago but I like to think I can still recognise and respect good journalism.
    Whether she is being a Pravda Hackette or a journalist Andrea Vance is quite a good writer – probably one of the better ones in this country.
    I have no particular thoughts about Christopher Luxon. He is not my local candidate.
    What does interest me is whether the party he leads will do to solo parents and the unemployed what the dreadful Ruth Richardson and the diabolical parson’s daughter Jennifer Shipley did to us solo parents in 1991 while the Catholic Jim Bolger stood by and let them.
    To his credit, so a member of that National caucus later told me, another Catholic, a young Bill English, was horrified by the carnage being unleashed on people at the bottom of the heap who did not have the means to hit back.
    We were easy targets, Mike, and the dreadful and diabolical twins were able to stoke the hard-working middle-class’s resentment against us and support Ms Richardson’s Mother of All Budgets.
    We weren’t all lazy teenage mothers – the popular stereotype – opening our legs to loafer all-comers to get pregnant and cop the DPB and a state house.
    Probably most of us, according to figures I got from Social Welfare back then, were men and women in their late 20s, through their 30s and into their 40s, who’d been abandoned by partners wanting something else, with someone else, and somewhere else.
    We were left holding the babies.
    But despite that we got on with job of bringing up our children, sending them to school, and turning out hard-working and productive citizens.
    And the awful Ruth and Jenny and the equally appalling John Luxton (he gave us market rents), with Jim’s connivance (until he began to dimly perceive what he had allowed; apparently Mrs Bolger, who never interfered in politics, began to share Bill English’s disquiet) made us scapegoats for the country’s poor economic state.
    I’m inclined this year to give my party vote to Act despite David Seymour’s attitude to solo parents and unemployed on benefits.
    That should show how much I loathe the current, post-Jacinda Labour Party.

How dirty old used cars from the US and Europe carry on polluting in Africa:
Between 2015-2018 some 14 million used vehicles wer exported from the EU, US and Japan, with 40% going to Africa.
In Ghana, for every 100 vehicles, 80 to 90 are used vehicles.
Exports of used cars are expected to increase as EVs take over.

So which is going to happen first, will power shortages cause problems for the exports or will the banning of imports restrict travel for Africans?

  Whatever happens first I’d imagine Africans will still be driving (and keeping their economies going) …. whilst we in the West are stationary due to: over emphasis in renewables, leading to power outages and EV charge bans; supply chain issues with vital car electronics; Labour & Greens imposing increasing road user charges and David Parker’s new 200% petrol taxes; Julie Ann Genter’s future new city 20km/h and open road 60 km/hr speed limits; urban streets converted to cycleways; new tram tracks everywhere (but nation can’t afford the actual trams) … wonder if Africa might see boat loads of refugees arriving from fleeing this madness in Aotearoa!

        The other factor is engaging fans into the game – used to happen here in NZ with English football, when they played match of the day on tv on Sunday. You can tell what age someone is based on who the top team was at the time.
        
        English ex-pats have also spread there passion for the round ball game far and wide.

I saw a story on one of the TV news bulletins last night about Ukraine struggling to get enough ammunition to defend itself.
IIRC, during Cindy’s reign, NZ was encouraged to give the Ukrainians a bunch of small, older, missiles that were about to reach their ‘use by’ date. No longer any use to us, but the Ukrainians said they could definitely use them. Cindy said no.
Anyone know what happened to those missiles?

I see that we Wellingtonians are set for a bumper year in 2024. Realignment of the tax system to make it fairer for all, new high-speed trains on all local lines and new four times daily services to Levin and Masterton, light rail to Island Bay and a second Mount Vic tunnel. Kelvin Davis was supposedly sacked from Cabinet in disgrace for selling Cabinet secrets to his donors.
But he would stay on to ‘save the cost of a by-election.
Now he crops up on TV1 News as ‘Acting Minister of Education’, trying to smooth over the appalling Education attendance figures.
There is no corruption in New Zealand , and Labour is setting new standards of ethics and transparency.
Just more lies from Hipkins and his gang of thugs.
