  With the incoming Labo/Gween/MP govt from 2024 as farms come up for sale, they will be purchased by the state then given to iwi cartels to own. Whole tracts of NZ productive land reduced to ruin and neglect. Mini Zimbabwe is NZ’s future.
  
  The funding for the purchases will come from a capital gain tax on kiwisaver accounts.

    Simon, this basically has already been done. Just look at all the former Lands & Survey or Landcorp or Pamu (whatever they call themselves) farms that were on the western side of Lake Taupo between Whakamaru, Turangi, Taumarunui and National Park. With one exception, that of Landcorp’s farm at National Park, they all are now in the hands of IWI organisation. Funding for IWI’s purchases came from you, the Taxpayer.

      Dont panic. Polls around the western world have supported left leaning parties but come election day the result is right.
      
      Australia is an exception but traditionally there has been very little difference between the different governments.
      
      Albanese had the good sense to ask voters permission to enact racist policies which he must know will result in them being resoundly rejected.
      
      The next question is if the NZ labour party is spending more for worse outcomes, who is receiving all our money?
      
      One other interesting snippet I picked up recently is Australia is spending less per capita on health. It just shows how ridiculous NZ votes are that they accept a huge spending blowout with poorer outcomes.

  IMO it puts beyond doubt that the National Party is not resonating with enough voters to successfully form a government in the coming election. Of course it might, but a Maori Party – Green — Labour government is now the more likely outcome.

      Sadly, if the poll is realised at the election, New Zealand will be wrecked by 2026. Almost certainty there would be an ACT National Government at the 2026 election. However such a victory will be a poisoned chalice. The place will be beyond fixing.

        Wrong. Labo/Gween/MP govt will cancel election law and add a dozen Maori seats. MSM will be given hundreds of millions to promote diversity woke etc. Outside non-msm content will be in effect outlawed.
        
        ACT to be cancelled due to racism. Or their MPs face prosecution for racism. Its a whole new world. Dont think ACT / National will make automatically it in 2026.

        Don’t blame Labour (or National). They are just responding to what people vote for. You must blame the voters.
        
        As septic points out, capable people who care and have options are leaving NZ in droves. They can see the writing on the wall. As a result NZ will become increasingly inhabited by people who like a hand out and think the easy way out is to screw the “rich pricks” over.
        
        As we lose capable people, and don’t attract people back, the situation just gets worse and worse.
        
        Pretty much all the professional people I deal with are missing kids who have gone overseas – particularly to Melbourne.

    The problem with ‘resonating with enough voters’ is that now far too many voters are dependent on their life being bankrolled by a state the cares little for them, and a lot for the power that their vote buys. Of course the cost of is unsustainable, and slowly becomes terminal for the society. A quick look at history suggests the final payment of this cost is in blood.

    Don’t talk crap, Brunton said Nats at 32% last poll as well, only got Curia the only poll to compare it to since had Nats up at 38% I note the left block down 1.5% but the right only down Acts half a point drop, I refuse to believe the maori party will receive almost 5% on election night, if you want to give up now then that part of the problem, I am still to hear any person down here say they are over the Nats, snd I am only hearing people laughing at Hipkins many because of not knowing what a woman is

      I agree, I still think Labour will lose big time on the night. Also the watermelons always end up with fewer seats than polling indicates.
      To be honest, I am most concerned about the increase in Winston First. Winston is the one person most responsible for letting this shower run the country. If back, my guess is he will do as always and sell to the highest bidder. Then sleep off hangovers while on overseas jaunts for the next term.

  You do have to wonder at the mentality of the NZ voter. Labour still at 30%?! Everything is getting worse under this government. Even the roads are almost impassable, they can’t even fix the roads properly! And don’t get me started on 80kms speed limit on straight highways in the Wairarapa. Crime, inflation, education, health – everything is going downhill under this government.
  
  Sadly many NZers have brought into the cults of cogovernance, climate change and transgender. That can surely be the only explanation for the rise of the Maori party and the Greens.
  
  How can we have a decent country when so many people are so deluded?

    Blame National. What else can a normal voter think when a normal opposition would confront the iwi mafia running the Labour party. Instead Chris Luxon tried to buy off he iwi cartels with $170 million pa plus whatever else hidden in education, justice etc. (that would be $500 million pa within 3 yrs). That didn’t work.
    
    Labo are only left wing to this extent and ruinous to NZ because National refuse to fight.

        It’s the venerable tactic: to control the opposition, become the opposition. The single biggest obstacle to significant change is that they are all basically on the same page; if they weren’t, they wouldn’t even be there. This political uniformity is the same almost right across the Western world.
        
        A good analogy is the Big Tech platforms – take YT, as a prime example. With a few rare exceptions (i.e. people who are very careful about what they say and even have to use code words to avoid problems), any so-called “right wing” media who remain on the platform are necessarily approved media who conform to the acceptable paradigm. Crowder, Daily Wire, Dave Rubin, Jordan Peterson are some of the biggest names, but their role is to steer people away from what really matters, and instead to focus on what doesn’t matter and what won’t result in any significant change.
        
        After Trump won in 2016, thereby exposing a systemic weakness and demonstrated discontent with the “orthodoxy,” and in the course of the subsequent years, the near free-for-all of ideas on social media platforms was ended, and strict censorship and purges became the norm.

    Maybe one explanation is the vast numbers dependent on the state. Both as employees of a bloated public sector and as recipients of different types of welfare. Then there are the recipients myriad types of government grants. Then add in the teachers. The gender activists. The Maori activists. The people who think climate change will end the world. And on and on.
    
    Sure, no sane farmer or trades person or someone working hard in the private sector is going to vote Labour. But how many are there compared to the groups I just outlined?
    
    If I am correct, the ‘floor’ for Labour support might now be 30 percent compared with 23 percent that we saw in the 2011 election under Cunliffe. Now add in the much higher number of people in a panic over climate change. So maybe 12 percent is the new rusted on support for the Greens, bolstered by a stronger communist faction and a rainbow faction. Now add in a resurgent Maori Party driven by folk who really want to end democracy in New Zealand.
    
    In my sketch of the world, New Zealand is a radically transformed place compared to ten years ago. Even five years ago. This transformation means that it is unlikely that National can attract sufficient support to form a government in 2023.

        Yup.
        
        When most people are productive and very few are sucking on the state then democracy can work because the self-interests of bludgers are not enough to move the needle.
        
        But now we have the situation where 350,000 families are getting an average of $700 per month from WFF.
        
        There are now over 270k working age people getting the benefit. Then a bunch more getting hardship grants, accomodation grants etc.
        
        Then the people that are “working” are often heavily dependent on the gravy puddle too: government employees(450,000) , tertiary education (50,000), NGOs, media,…
        
        That’s out of a working-age population of around 3 million over half depend directly on the taxpayer.
        
        And they vote. Guess which way?

        riffer, I’m not sure that’s actually true. Recorded and studied history tends to be about rulers and their machinations for power, often cloaked in seemingly benign religion or philosophy. But most history is actually the unrecorded lives of ordinary people. I suspect the progress we have made to date is due to their choices to do the right thing, often strengthened by their faith.

    Like most things, societal change seems to have a kind of pendulum effect. It never shifts to a better way at once. We get these extreme swings, and eventually things settle down. Like many pandemic times before, crazy shit came out of this one.

  a. People in paid employment are far better off than those depending on tax paid welfare,
  And b. People providing stable family relationships for children are better rewarded than those who are not.
  With a clear incentivised pathway to get from broken to stable and employed.

    yeah, that’s all well and good, but you still have those people who don’t fit that path.
    So you need policy to deal with that.
    And our society frowns on us shooting or gassing them, so we have to give them a helping hand or else they create massive problems for the rest of society.
    Free will… it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.
    And some people do quite well out of single parent families. So it’s not just that. There have to be other factors at play.
    We used to have a society where one person could look after an entire family on their wages. Then women won the right to freedom and work (and mostly, that was a good thing). But it came with unintended consequences. And one of those was that our society became conditioned to the concept of it taking two wages to support a family.
    So even if we can incentivise people to obtain gainful employment we still have the issue of it’s not enough to support a family well and allow the time to actually raise a family well.
    This isn’t just a matter of “these people don’t try hard enough”. Society is stacked against a lot of them. Fix that issue, and you fix a lot of the issues around crime, mental health and good parenting.
    So how do we do it? Buggered if I know. Everybody has a different opinion.

      Quite so, riffer. The most historically successful way of doing this is to stop trying to protect people from the consequences of their poor decisions under the guise of kindness (when this is really extending power over the ‘protected’)
      
      Government’s pan-generational efforts to provide this protection have created agency-sapping dependency on a state that does not end well for individuals, and will not end well for society.

      I should respond to the question “So how do we do it?”. I suggest we need a change in philosophy thus:
      
      1. Promote ideals like effort, thrift, resourcefulness, the value of community, personal agency; and,
      
      2. Banish the state from the failure amelioration business; and,
      
      3. Allow people to fail
      
      Then step back, and watch society heal itself.

        Non sequiturs much? The inference that when people fail they become violent, and violence will end up being dealt with by gas chambers and machine guns is absurd.
        
        I fail. Every day, in fact. This morning I failed to get out of bed early enough to commute to the city on my bike and as a result I’m less fit that I’d like to be. I will fix that. I also failed to speak supportively to one of my staff as I need to get to another meeting. I will fix that, too.
        
        Returning to your non sequitur, violence of the type you mention is most likely the consequence of 1000’s of little otherwise inconsequential failures that have been left unaddressed over time. Individuals need to develop agency to see this pattern, just as they need to see examples of how others are dealt to by the law when lashing out happens.
        
        I stand by my assertion that letting people fail and experience negative consequences in the small things build strong character for most.

So no cash, no goods or services. We used to have a society where you could literally build your own house, where not everyone had a TV. Or electric oven. Or washing machine. We used to have a society where if you couldn’t afford the power bill, you heated the house with an open fire and lit candles. If you couldn’t afford petrol for the car, you biked to work. We used to have a society where people didn’t have a sook that they couldn’t go on a family holiday every year. Now we have bene’s that expect to have a TV with Sky, a car that they can drive around whenever, wherever they like, the latest iPhone and iPad, a decent holiday, a nice house (paid for by taxpayers), be able to go to the pictures, the pub, have a splash on the horses and eat takeaways.
      It’s not that you can’t bring up a family on one wage these days, it’s that most want more than they can afford.

      We don’t need any magic solutions, first step is to lift payments for stable families. We have to be prepared to spend more initially to stop the decline in society.
      Both parents having to work is the result of cultural expectations that have resulted in inflation of desirable assets like housing, and the parents no better off.
      Again, if we’re prepared to subsidise childcare, a parent should get the same payment to look after her or his own child at home.

      I also might ponder how many of the massed off-road bike riders terrorising people in Auckland lately are living in homes provided by the state.
      Welfare is also going to be linked to gangs and ram-raids perpetrators.
      And is is not financial “poverty”, when they post their crimes to Tik Tok (or afford those off road bikes).
      It is a moral and (as an agnostic I say metaphorically) a spiritual poverty.
      
      Lack of aspiration to engage with society in a productive way, or climb the ladder.
      Hands out, and in the other hand is a hammer.

Hiding in Plain Sight – the Real Agenda
Last week, Waatea News talkback host John Tamihere interviewed the Chairman of the Waikato-based Tainui iwi, former MP Tuku Morgan, about the future of freshwater.

It was clear from their on-air ‘chat’, that as far as iwi leaders are concerned, Labour’s Three Waters reforms are just a stepping-stone towards Maori ‘ownership’ of freshwater.
John Tamihere: “We own the water”

Tuku Morgan: “Clearly, that’s the next issue to be addressed… The ownership of water is probably the most important issue of our time … There are two ways we can do it. Litigate in the courts or go head-to-head in a set of negotiations in terms of the Crown and its Treaty partners – iwi and hapu around the country. We are preparing right now for that… As we settle Three Waters and work with the Crown to manage waterways and get certainly and confidence going forward, then we’ll push on with the most important issue to face Maoridom – the ownership of water.”

They plan to go after the electricity companies, with John Tamihere questioning the timing: “To what extent do you have a conversation with the generators on the Waikato to say, ‘times up, there’s got to be a levy here’?”

Tuku Morgan acknowledged that time was coming – and he went on to mention meeting the Chair of Ngai Tahu and discussing their legal claim for freshwater ownership: “So they are in the Courts now… We will get there, there is no doubt about that… If one of the iwi make up the ground we are pushing then all of us will benefit.”
In other words, a win for one iwi over freshwater rights will become a precedent for all iwi.

… Tuku Morgan and John Tamihere have made it very clear that if the Maori Party is the kingmaker after the election, they will not settle for anything less than full ownership of New Zealand’s freshwater.

It would be bit of a bugger, if non-Maori New Zealanders had to import bottled water from China.

What New Zealand missed was that “abortion” is simply not in the American Constitution.
That was the flip side of the Supreme Court judgement

Just as “Maori ownership of non-Maori water utilities”, “co-governance” and the bloody word “Aoteoroa” are none of them in the Treaty of Waitangi –
the original version, not the 1979s-90s interpretation

        A National/Act government worries me, due to the potential for societal conflict. Some of this wouldn’t be their fault – there is an expectation that has been built up by the current government that if turned on its head would result in the potential for violence.
        
        I fear for further sale of the country’s assets “to balance the books quicker”.
        
        I do not relish the idea of a GST hike to 20% so that those at the top have to pay even less tax.
        I do not like the thought of a potential civil race war.
        
        The problem for me is some things I think National do well. Some things I think Labour do well. And some things either party do really badly.
        
        So – like many – I reckon there’s no choice for me. Act doesn’t appeal – too centred on individual at the expense of general society. Greens turn me off completely with their identity bullshit.
        
        TOP – maybe, but they aren’t getting any traction.
        and all the rest of the parties are crazy motherfuckers.
        
        I am truly screwed. I seem to be of the age (56) that political parties don’t give a shit about. Too well off, too straight, too white for the left, and not rich enough or conservative enough for the right. I pay my taxes, obey the law (well, except the bloody stupid ones) and I have raised a bunch of well adjusted kids contributing to society. I am married, and not too crazy.

      Have a look at Parliament. It is not just the Maori Party, all Parties.
      The Tribal Leaders – the ones who divert the handouts for themselves. The Maori on the street gets nothing. A payment to Tainui bought the Maori King a flash car and property alterations.
      Tukuroirangi Morgan, John Tamihere, Willie Jackson, Nanaia Mahuta, Hone Harawira, David Rankin (he is a good guy)
      You get the idea, the Maori hierarchy. According to Julian Batchelor there are about 1000 who fit into that hierarchy.
      
      Elite Maori keeps everything, the people on the street get nothing.
      
      Elite Pakeha share. Sure the Elite are richer, but even the poor have opportunities.
      
      Do you know what the whiteman did for transport in the 1800s? Roads and bridges. Maori had never even seen a wheel back then.

        Has the influence Maori members have been able to exert within the Labour government helped them understand the immense advantage the Maori seats give them.
        It means that any legislation needs seven more votes for a majority if the Maori seat members are opposed.
        By Maori dividing the Maori seats, by voting Ti Pati Maori, there is even the chance of greater influence on policy.
        They don’t need 51% to defeat legislation only enough votes to prevent it.

Interesting example of equivocation from National on the EV subsidy changes announced yesterday. Yes they condemned the increased taxes on utes. However they can’t quite bring themselves to say that they will axe EV subsidies.

    But and there is a but when we must acknowledge the elephant in the room and that is when will the time come to make EV and Tonka toys start paying their share of providing and maintaining the roads. It is touted that 20% of new vehicle purchases in the last 12 months were EV’s. Apart from the fact that Tesla buyers grabbed the biggest portion of subsides dished out it rapidly becoming essential these overweight perambulators starting paying RUC levies. Again we see another Labour policy with not one but a collection of unintended consequences. As we know EV’s end up somewhere operating emission free but leave a heavy trail of emissions somewhere else along the way to ma showroom near you.

Last night on One News, Michael Wood was challenged that more clean car rebates had gone to Tesla owners than Toyota owners. He refuted this and said that Toyota rebates were bigger. Turns out the reporter’s facts were correct, from the start of the scheme in 2021, but Michael decided that the comparison should only be done after the scheme was revised to include hybrids, and in that case, Toyota wins.
But the kicker is that the scheme is being revised to favour Tesla again. From the 1st of July most Toyota hybrids will no longer be covered. Take the 2023 Corolla Hatch GX Hybrid, emissions are 101 g/km, and currently this receives a rebate of $3,418.28. From the 1st of July it will get no rebate at all. This is true for most of the Toyota hybrids, except the Yaris range and PHEVs.
So if Michael thinks that Toyota is a more worthy recipient than Tesla, why is he changing the scheme to favour Tesla?

I remember when

The Treaty of Waitangi gave Maori the full, exclusive and undisturbed possession of their Lands and Estates, Forests, Fisheries….
Is that because even in 1840 Maori understood that water is only a medium.
Currents in rivers and streams allowed Maori to understand that water is constantly being replaced.
Only in the fresh water lakes and lagoons is there a semblance of permanency with water.
This is possibly why Sir Apirana Nagta made specific mention of them in his Treaty explanation.
Even then they are likely to reduce in size in summer and expand in winter.
They also were aware that rain meant water was available everywhere so ownership was not considered possible.

I remember when

How reliable are the statistics regularly presented to show how Maori are disadvantaged.
Officially we have a Maori population of 16-17% -which is self selected.
However, when we are shown results for Maori being in the bottom percentile of health, education performance and attendance, employment, life expectancy, etc., how are Maori identified.
Are there in fact two groups of Maori, those that identify as Maori in the Census and those that are identified in the above figures.
What percentage of Census Maori are identified in the production figures other than the Census.
Are the Health, Education, Employment, etc., figures more likely to represent a smaller group who are most disadvantaged.
None or few of the ‘like the idea of being’ Maori and the advantages sometimes.

  Nobody knows how many Maori there are as the previous Census was in many ways incomplete so what figures they have for Maori are tempered by the Department of Statistics to read watever they and those above wanted.
  Show me where there are 17% of the poulation are Maori.
  This years Census appears to be even worse for the Maori returns even with KFC and League Tickets recently offerred.
  We are told that the Immunisation and Vaccination of young children are ridiculously low by any world standards.
  Does this as a comparable ratio relate in any way to the fact the Maori and Pacifica people have not participated in the Census either ?

Where does that leave Labour? Surely Whaitiri must now be sacked as a Minister forthwith, and be suspended from the Labour Party caucus. But does that come with a risk of other MP’s revolting, and Labour losing its majority in the House? Could this be the excuse Hipkins has been looking for to go early?

      No one is suggesting that any accommodation between the National and Act parties and TPM is likely to be a goer.
      
      But what needs to happen now is for people to make a cuppa, sit down, take a breath and ask themselves seriously whether a Labour/Greens/TPM government would be in New Zealand’s best interests. And if the answer is “No”, they might just have to stick a clothespeg over their nose and vote National, because a strong National party vote, with Act maintaining its 2020 vote, is the only thing that will give us a change of government. As tempting as it may be to vote for someone like NZF or DNZ, that simply risks letting Labour sneak back in. This is the election to send a really strong and decisive message to the Labour Party; you’ve done enough damage already!

Excuse my language mods, but what a bunch of wankers

Police have removed protesters who blocked Wellington traffic on Wednesday morning on Glenmore St, at the city end of the Karori tunnel.

Members of the public challenged the Restore Passenger Rail protesters who blocked transport, including buses.

Liam Hannah, who confronted the protesters, said a man got off a stuck bus saying they were stopping him get to hospital for his daughter’s chemotherapy.

Am I worried about the next election. Nah for all the spin on the polls when 55% say he country is going in the wrong direction and just 35% say the right direction. The possibility of a Labour ,Green,Maori party would be even worse and most voters know it.
Watch the Green vote drop and when a poll shows the right going to win then the Labour Party will follow them with more MPs defecting. I said post the last election that we will see National on 40% and ACT on 15% and I still stand by that.

So is this a Ngāti Porou / East Coast force compared to the Waikato / Taimui (King) of the Labour Party. But I may be wrong
And it depends on whether Meka Whaitiri has thrown herself out of Parliament under Winston’s law, horse traded against oil and gas exploration.

Let me share a brief chat with a woman who was staunchly and still is, Labour, particularly as Labour saved us from Covid. That woman has a senior job in commercial lending with an Aussie owned bank, so is not, apparently, a dunce.
She was unaware that a senior cabinet minister was leaving Labour but she was well aware that Hipkins had had a meeting with Prince William.
With voters like that our country has no show.
…It is too early in the day for me to seek solace in the bourbon bottle.

Most interesting is the comments section which shows just how wrought with division the so-called centre-right vote is. I think the same commentary and division would exist in this forum.

Won’t happen but good on Brash for at least throwing it out there. National loathes NZ First even more than it does ACT. God knows how things will pan out if they do sneak across the line come October. I can see Luxon & Co throwing NZ First back into the arms of Labour, or perhaps making NZF a severe thorn in their side as it straddles the house playing both sides against each other.

  The NZF candidate in Northland is Shane Jones, who is poorly thought of in the electorate. In 2020, he lost most of the vote NZF had previously.
  
  By contrast, Matt King, now Democracy NZ, is highly regarded. In 2020, he actually increased his vote, unlike (all?) other National MPs, and his share of the vote fell only marginally.
  
  Apart from anything else, you don’t know what you will get from NZF. Their leader is the most venal politician around.

There was an interesting comment earlier in the day as to why Labour had a continuing fairly high support. The blogger thought it might be due to the number of people involved with the government. It got me thinking and wondering how many that could be ? If you add those employed directly such as public servants, and those working for quasi government organisations and the multitude of consultant companies then add all the people who recieve benefits in one form or another it must add up to a sizeable chunk of the voting population. All could be afraid of loosing out if there was to be a change of government. So look after those that are presently feeding you. This is a very large bedrock of support for Labour and with an opposition appearing to be little different why change. The status quo is maintained.

  They or Bolger flogged off the rail network, which was a complete disaster. Transrail, the new owners, ran the system down and the government had to buy back the remnants

Meka says she has written to the Speaker and has resigned, the Speaker says he hasn’t received any letter whatsoever from her.

John Tamihere says Meka hasn’t jumped any wakas.

Really John, then exactly what has she done?

Leaving one party for another mid-term, saying your vote will now be used not for Labour but the Maori Party, is exactly what waka jumping is, isn’t it?

If it is not, then I’d love to know why he thinks it’s not.

FFS – I don’t believe a word of what any of them say.

I think they have long since given up any pretence of being straight with the New Zealand public.

  We will shortly be livestreaming Parliament TV. The events in the House should provide some clarity around whether Whaitiri has vacated her seat by writing to the Speaker with her resignation from Labour.
  
  If she did and the necessary requirements were fulfilled, then she vacates her seat. If some conditions weren’t met or she withdrew her letter, she could remain in the House as an independent and vote along Te Pāti Māori’s lines.
