HE DID IT !!
NZ Government debt tipped over $150 Billion yesterday. Congrats to Grant and his team. What a legacy for future generations.
Even better, the debt is growing at $71M each day. That is, the Govt spends $71M more that it ‘earns’ (ie taxes).
And we have a Gabrielle Bill coming up for another $20B, give or take.
Two questions :
– What magic solution does Labour have to turn the $71M deficit each day into surplus ? Where will they cut ? Where will they tax ? Where will the productivity come from ?
– How will the young people of today pay our debt back ? Is there a plan ?

  On this matter I say that National or Labour will sooner or later and probably sooner introduce a comprehensive Capital Gains Tax including the family home. They will point to overseas and also lie that including the family home will restrict price increases. It wont and it hasnt overseas.
  They will also tax withdrawals from Kiwisaver. This means you will pay tax on your contributions, tax on earnings, tax on realised and unrealised capital gains and tax on withdrawals.
  Why. Well both are running out of money to fulfill their ultimate wet dream. That is to command and control your life. Their agenda as per the WEF that both support is you will own nothing and be happy. They will decide your income and this will partly be based on “social credits” as in China. This means your income will be determined by whether you live your life according to their rules.
  Oh and BTW if you are one of the Special People Good News. Your income will be twice that of the White MotherFu…..

        Capt. You dont get a credit if there is a loss. Its a win win for the Government. The reason for a CGT now is that over the next decade a large number of Baby Boomers will sell to move into retirement villages or cark it. Many will have held their homes for a long time and so the CGT will be substantial. In my own case the purchase price was $50,000 in 1979. The current price is north of $1.5M. Even a 1% CGT tax will cost me $14500. Multiply that you get a very large amount of tax.

        Overseas, almost invariably, capital gains taxes don’t cover people’s homes, typically with caveat that they must have been held for a couple of years or so.
        
        A problem that capital gains tax needs to be adjusted for, however, is small businesses and family farms. Various countries overseas have adjusted the tax to cope with transactions when farmers and tradies cash up, often in the latter case, on retirement.
        
        A decent capital gains tax (we have a minor one now) would have been a brake on NZ’s property bubble.

        Should a CGT be introduced, there will be a commencement date, e.g., 1 October 2025. Any assets acquired prior to that date would be exempt. It is just reckless, baseless, scaremongering to suggest otherwise.
        
        In Australia, the family home is exempt. In the United States, the following is applicable—
        
        Capital Gains Taxes on Owner-Occupied Real Estate
        
        If you sell your home for a profit, that’s considered a capital gain. But you may be able to exclude up to $250,000 of that gain from your income, or up to $500,000 if you and your spouse file a joint tax return.
        
        To qualify, you must pass both the ownership test and the use test. This means you must have owned and used the real estate as your main home for a total period of at least two years out of the five years before the sale date. The two-year periods for owning the home and using the home don’t have to be the same two-year periods. Typically, you can’t take this exclusion if you’ve taken it for another home sale in the two years before the sale of this home.       It becomes a
      pseudo gift tax
      pseudo death duty
      Due to NZ Kiwi saver and National super, making their returns on the buying and selling of shares.

      They say that but do they believe it. I think not. If both National and Labour act in unison even though the party that introduces CGT will be tossed out at the next election at some point they will be re-elected and have the benefit of a locked in CGT. Think about it.

      Bjool has an interesting comment that has been viewed before, Unrealised Capital Gains Tax.
      That is a tax issued by some thing Government body – probably Local on behalf of National body, whereby every ratepaying property has a current CV, and is then translated into a tax say annualy like Rates.
      It gets jusr slotted as an item inthe rates bills.
      The Valuations are controlled by some “body” and annually reflects the valuations and the Unrealised tax payable. as presumably the property is not sold during the period either.

    Family home is AFAIK exempted everywhere overseas. Twofold reasons – one is the “emotional” thing. The other is that we don’t usually keep tabs on capital improvements eg if I add a room, this will increase the value of the property – it’s a capital expense and should therefore be added to the “purchase price”.   Young people will generally head overseas. National has a plan though. Cant fix anything but they can fuck around on the edges to make it a whole worse.
  
  National’s plan is to bring in 100,000 Indians/ Filipinas, / Africans each year. (50,000 net plus 50,000 to cover those leaving)
  
  The banks will lend, retailers will sell, landlords will rent. There will be an operating surplus but the capital budget will be under funded.

  Out of interest, does that debt clock include KO debt? They’ve be raking up billions in off-government-balance sheet debt for a while now – hear a figure of $20b or so? Sure the artist formerly known as Benedict could comment!

    This is why Robertson let these place borrow their own money, I am sure they said KO could never pay that debt back, it keeps it off the books, they will say Nats did it, but there was around 2 billion debt, they have multiplied much debt by more than 10 in 5 years, this should be treated like fraud

    Yes, it will include KO debt. I note that Robertson uses a net debt figure. He does that by including as a government asset the $60 billion in the Super Fund. Gross debt is about 50% of GDP but net debt is 30%.
    
    In theory the government could raid the Super Fund, though they would probably would have to change the Super Fund legislation. The Super Fund has been built up by successive annual contributions of $2 billion plus capital growth of the assets.

        For others who were stumped by “KO” in the phrase “KO debt”, this refers to Kainga Ora. the organisation that replaced, or seems to have replaced, the Ministry of Housing.
        
        Here, from its own web site, is the story of the “gift” of the name (in most cases in most languages names are free).
        
        To understand more about how we got our name and the meaning behind it, Te Ariki Pihama – Te Ringa Raupa – Chief Advisor Maori at Kainga Ora popped in to have a korero with Minister Nanaia Mahuta at Parliament.
        
        What follows is a link to a video to where the 95-97 per cent of New Zealanders who can’t speak Maori are taught how to pronounce the name.
        
        Poster Mike, or someone with knowledge of Parliament, might be able to explain what link, if any, remains with “Housing Corporation New Zealand” if that entity survives.
        
        I suspect it’s been a complex change, brought in quietly and cunningly, much like the sneaky changes to the State health system.

        This government will borrow some and possibly have a special tax for one or two years on higher incomes, as has been the case in Queensland. Apparently RB Governor think that is the best way to deal with it.

  I think the ‘plan’ according to the twenty(?) or so people who run the world (while allowing us to believe in the quaint concept of national sovereignty) are CBDCs rising like a Phoenix from the ashes of a collapsed global financial system. Lots of debt and currencies becoming worthless are a key contributors to such a collapse. I’d very much like to be wrong here.

  I have been pondering your comment. Yes, gross debt is $150 billion. But is it growing at $25 billion per year, which is how you appear to characterised the daily amount of $71 million.
  I understand that current the deficit was about $8 billion. It is this that adds to the $150 billion. Of course during the peak of Covid support, the annual deficit was much larger.
  However, I agree that borrowing could be $25 billion per year, because the existing debt is also regularly coming up for renewal. Most government debt is long term bonds up to 30 years, though some is short term. It would be expected that around 10% of government debt has to be renewed each year.
  This is one of the many reasons why inflation is such an issue. It is not just private mortgages that are affected. So is government debt affected by higher interest rates. Both the renewals and the new debt. An extra 4% interest on $25 billion would be an additional $1 billion government expenditure.

      That is all debt, public and private. The NZ government debt is all in NZ dollars, but of course many of the holders of government debt will be overseas parties.

    One question I have relates to the 2017 election.
    I recall back then the Govt Debt was around $60B – quite a lot was made of that during the election !
    
    Anyway, Stephen Joyce identified a $12B ‘hole’ in Labour’s economic plan, that was said to balance, and not incur additional debt. Basically Joyce said the spending in year one, eg on public sector wage increases, was not carried over to years 2, 3 etc, creating the $12B hole.
    
    A few economists disputed this claim, and Vernon Small*, then the Stuff Political Editor, published many articles rubbishing Joyce’s claim. Unfortunately Joyce never sought support for his numbers and, in my view, it cost National quite a few votes.
    
    Anyway, back of the envelope calcs…
    2017 debt $60B
    Joyce’s discovery $12B x 5 years = $60B
    Add on $30B for Covid and myriad Govt balls ups, PGF, funds for Greens and NZF to raid, Kiwibuild etc etc say $30B
    
    Gives me the $150B we have today.
    
    Anyway, just a thought.
    * Note re Vernon Small, he is now Press Secretary to David Parker, of course.
    Ganesh Nana also was very vocal in supporting Labour’s ‘budget’. He is now head of the ‘Productivity Commission…

  Wait for the Greens to start screaming for it to be repaired and running again.

    The curse of the backwards typing strikes again! What I was trying to say was that rail is probably a better option than narrow winding roads along steep hills for bulk freight, but if you live on a long narrow island on an earthquake fault, you should surely plan for places to be cut off.
    More self-sufficiency (local power, water & wastewater systems), emergency stores (including useful equipment and fuel), alternate delivery methods (by air or sea). Old fashioned technologies enabled humans to live in isolated places – maybe we should take another look at some of them.

  A week ago I lodged a complaint with the Race Relations Commissioner on their website on this topic. It disappeared and I have yet to hear back even an acknowledgement that they got it. I phoned three days ago and left a message to phone me but still nothing. It is like I don’t exist. I filed a complaint with the police online and at least have a file number.
  
  Assessing how I feel about being non-personed by these state agencies I feel insignificant and angry. It is like the government wants us to become extreme.

  And that is a major factor, given that more than half of rentals are managed by property managers who are expected by most owners to pitch rent at or near the market. Including well above market rent if that works for the property. And many owners have no borrowing anyway, having paid off loans, so they are doing well, thank you. A reward for good management.
  
  Minister Woods says the number of rentals is increasing. I posted this the other day here, does make one wonder where the increase is coming from –
  
  Reserve Bank reports number of investors borrowing for residential property. Average per month – 2020 3,529 2021 3,145; 2022 1,860. And the RB also reports number of FHBs borrowing. Average per month – 2021 2,708; 2022 1,940.
  
  I do think there is a rental crisis, but maybe not much of one when the applicants landlords won’t touch are factored in. Due to Labour’s changes that make applicant risk assessment an absolute necessity.

  As an owner of 12 rentals, I can tell you that all our rent increases are a reflection of this current governments compliance requirements.
  Supply and demand have never been an issue, the demand has always been higher than supply. Any delay in renting out a property is now due to poor tenancy laws that make us more cautious to who we’re willing to rent to.

    I’ve owned/managed rentals since the 1990’s. It’s the Govt’s series of ham fisted actions that have pushed up rents. There really isn’t any other way of looking at it. I don’t like increasing rents at all, have many tenants who have lived over ten years in our properties. Over the last two years I have had to increase rents, and have advised the tenants the reason why it was necessary.

About Mr Campbell. Reckon he has been hard done by, especially with that word ‘sacked’ next to every mention of his name.. He says he has been sacked because he has promoted go-governance in his chaired organisations and publicly. If that is even at least partly the case, and there does appear to be a trout in the milk, then he was completely aligned with government policy. Until about 5 minutes ago.

No problem at all with employees, especially in top roles, having their services dispensed with, but delivering effectively against contracted or agreed performance indicators surely has to come into play somewhere in the process. Whether Mr Campbell has delivered or not, no idea, but he has a lot of governance experience.

But this is an election year and the Labour world has tilted on its axis to accommodate political reality. Someone is suddenly out of step. Couple of months ago would Mr Campbell have been sacked or applauded for his public comments?

A Chairman scorned?

It’s not just him, Minister Mahuta will be spending a lot of time out of the country, and she and others have been sidelined. Did I mention election year?

The Minsk Agreement was an attempt to find some sort of peace. As per my post above, it was a bullshit delaying tactic while the US prepared Ukraine to be the proxy they felt could weaken Russia to the point where they could overthrow Putin and install another puppet like Yeltsin who almost destroyed the country.
        The US are in the process of decoupling from Ukraine. Their plan isn’t going according to plan. Other than all out nuclear war, which nobody wins. this particular war isn’t going as they wanted.

        I too had a business that included professional minute taking. We’re not only talking lunches but pre meeting coffee and morning and afternoon teas as well. All with scones and biscuits. Add up all that time plus the wailing and hand quivering at the start and finish and sometimes I only had to work about 3 hours out of 6 or 7. These were government departments of course. Judith was relaxed and ran circles verbally around hapless Wood. She gave concise answers to any questions vs unending drivel from Wood that never actually said anything.
She quoted stats to every point and exposed the woolly energy polices of this govt etc.
It was a masterclass in how to present on television.
A pity the low-life media have it in for her.

While true she should have raised the issue that subisies like this are inappropriate and un needed. There is a mass of economic evidence around subsidies like this actually making things worse. Interesting interview with Ian Wishart on the Platform. Basically he has done research on past weather events using Papers Past. The vast majority of these events are not in the NIWA database of serious events. This database is used by journalists to fact check.

So some pretty serious omissions. For the period 1868 through to 1890 which was the period looked at we had a significant event every year.

Something worth calling out and digging deeper. I wonder if Stuff will be up for job ( Sarc)

Anyone know the link. I recall about 20 years ago a Southern snowstorm so bad that the Army was called in to rescue stock from the tops.     I should have added that Ian Wishart noted that the NIWA’s historic weather events database is missing a lot of major storms that hit New Zealand. Between 1868 and 1890 New Zealand was being yearly hit by storms on Cyclone Bola intensity. That was 22 major storms in 22 years and only 4 are on the NIWA database. For his research he used Papers Past where reporters would have a beat so would report regularly on their area – and the shipping reporter would record shipping arrivals and departures as well as other events that affected shipping. The sea captains and the ports regularly took the barometric pressure readings to get an idea of weather changes – lives could depend on this. In major storms these readings were included in the shipping news. Its these low pressure readings. Wishart was looking for.
    Wishart notes that:
    • Five storms geographically bigger and with deeper barometric lows than Cyclone Gabrielle struck New Zealand between 1868 and 1890, revealing that what we call a 1-in-250yr event was actually closer to a 1-in-4yr event back then
    • The late 1800s was a much colder, low carbon climate, raising fundamental questions about how extreme weather events play out in the real world vs computer modelling

  Read an interesting ‘climate change crisis’ story on the Guardian. Yep very left and very woke but it’s free, their sports coverage is awesome and their investigative reporting is still up there amongst the best in the world. Apparently the main canal in Ottawa won’t be suitable for ice skating for the entire winter – wow, clearly an example of climate change eh? Then in the same article they mention that this is the first time this has happened………in half a century. Hmm. So what you are saying is that this event has happened before? Doesn’t that run slightly counter to your argument about climate change crisis? As in it has happened before, so not really unprecedented is it? Sigh!
  
  I have always been willing to give the climate change argument a fair hearing but it’s really hard to do so when it is so clearly agenda driven. While one side cherry picks data and conveniently ignores things like solar storms, the mini-ice age recovery, tries to manipulate data etc, the other can sometimes look like the pro-cigarette lobby from the 60’s and 70’s!

  You may be bored of climate change, but it ain’t bored of you. More precisely it doesn’t care.
  When I first went to work in Bangkok in 1993 there were few obese kids. By the the time I left maybe half the kids were. In the meantime places like Starbucks & copycats had sprung up all over place selling various sugar laden beverages. Plus American junk food outlets are everywhere where they weren’t before.
  Up country none of these places have taken a hold and the population remains in good shape, generally.

Yesterday I debated limiting rate rises with Wayne Mapp. He argued the limiting rates would lead to failing core infrastructure, like water. My reply was the unlimited rates have also led to ‘failing core infrastructure’. It is the same argument I have with ‘consultation periods’. In concept there are a great idea. The reality is they are a total waste of money and time. Super cities, I thought (logically) they would save money and improve services. The reality is more waste and poorer outcomes.

Both the left and right fall into this trap. People are willing to ignore reality if it doesn’t match their beliefs. The ‘new’ reading system used in schools was supposed to be better than the phonics it replaced. After decades of proof that it is worse, educators still refuse to admit its a failure. Communism is the ultimate example. After centuries of communist countries turning into dictatorial meat grinders for their populations, young people and educators still insist ‘they just didn’t do it right, communism is great’

    Whole language used to be described as look and guess. That works well enough if you have the life experiences and background knowledge that enable you to make an educated guess. (It’s how most of us decipher the Maorified English our public sector currently loves).
    But, if you come from a home that hasn’t given you the experiences and knowledge, you can be left drowning in incomprehension.

And of course the trouble with English is that phonics falls over so quite often – quart/part – cough/bough/through – and all that.

    Total nonsense. The water sent into the stratosphere by Tongan volcano was say 150 thousand tonnes; the rain dumped around Auckland was hundreds of millions of tonnes.
    
    Due to increased CO2 warming the surface and the oceans – marine heat waves.

      The 10% increase in stratospheric water vapour can have a major impact. The effect is due to water being the major greenhouse gas and it takes a long time for water to move from the stratosphere back into the troposphere. I don’t think anyone is suggesting that the rain came directly from water vaporised by the volcano.

Remember earlier in the week I posted about Nashie’s close ties to the Forestry Industry…. and included the link showing where he had received sizeable donations from the sector at the past three elections?

Now we see where the NZ Forestry president James Treadwell is saying…. findings of the ‘short, sharp, very targeted slash enquiry’ the minister announced last week, may be viewed with suspicion by the wider public given Stewies relationship with the industry. Is it an impediment to how he’s perceived? Yep, definitely, those things are always an impediment.

  How would you feel if you were pulled up and charged because you’d had a glass of red wine or two two weeks previously?
  
  Roadside drug tests don’t show impairment. Worse yet, you can be done for smoking a joint at a party two weeks previous, while somebody who has been on a meth bender for two weeks previously, and is on the way to their dealer because they ran out of meth six hours ago tests negative.

    Not mention that the test takes about 20-30 minutes – sample obtained – put into $50k machine – wait 20 minutes for test to be clear … bit hard to run 100% stop/test on a busy road.
    
    There is no accepted “threshold” level like the .05 or .08 for booze. Plus the fact that metabolites hang about for a week or two.

        Sorry. My bad. I guess I was working off some old vaguely remembered (?) stuff. Even so, a 3-minute wait for the test would put the total average delay up to something like 5 minutes. Bit hard to impose a 5-minute block on every car in a serious traffic stream.
        
        Working from old (unreliable?) memory again, I think there was something about the tests being applied to people who showed signs of impairment …

  Yes and the Brits, watched them administer one on a episode of some programme within the last week. The guy was hammered, tested negative for alcohol so they did a roadside drug test on him that detected cocaine. Back to the station for a blood test for him. But obviously they aren’t good enough for our Police. I think they might be scared of what they find.

Just saw an article on Stuff – Outspoken former health boss Rob Campbell lashes out at ‘constipated’ health system.

Campbell goes on to complain about the bureaucracy stating that ‘duplicated overhead roles were still in place, but there was no reason why they couldn’t be moved immediately’. One peach was “Switch more money to primary care and take the bureaucracy out.”

Where has this guy been hiding for all these years? We need to get him into a role in the health sector where he can wield serious clout – maybe even the chairman position, right at the heart of the system. He knows the solutions – surely he’ll put them in place if he had any power or authority?

What’s that you say? He was at the top and did bugger all?

Awkward! Judging by the comments thus far (90% along the lines of WTF – you were in charge!!), suspect the comments will be closed down sharpish!

Wouldn’t it be nice if just once, we had a good old school journalist who, rather than nodding along with all this garbage, pushed it right back on him and asked him if that meant he’d failed as this happened under his watch?

Instead we get the play-school news folks smiling, nodding and no doubt agreeing it’s all so terribly ‘wacist’!!!

People who want to have children are faced with a dilemma. Creating a child who will be responsible for high emissions over their lifetime requires others to stay in poverty (if the planet is to operate within its physical limits). This, it can easily be argued, furthers injustice and inequality.

Does anyone know how they can claim to have 117,000 intersex people in NZ before the census when they state that they don’t know how many there are?

That figure also means that just over 2% of the population are intersex, which seems quite high given other estimates overseas put the population at almost a rounding error.

Of course, it could just be about getting more taxpayer money to help people like Rogena with their ‘work’…

  That person clearly doesn’t know the difference between intersex (biological) and non-binary (social).
  
  Intersex (e.g. xxy) is very rare – perhaps 0.1% of the population. Non-binary (i.e one of the 73 supposed genders) is around 2%.

The mayor of College Park, Maryland resigned before he was arrested Thursday on child pornography distribution and possession charges, authorities announced.

The Prince George’s County Police Department said it arrested 47-year-old Patrick Wojahn Thursday morning after it executed a search warrant and seized multiple cell phones, a storage device and a tablet at his College Park home on Tuesday.
