        Having interacted with Redbaiter for many years I understand why he posts what he posts. The current National party has veered so far from its founding principles that it has become a principle-less abomination that decides what it believes in by what the latest polls show. There are many bloggers who have traditionally voted Nat but now have to either hold their nose or find someone else who is closer to representing their values, and one of them is the freedom of expression. Your attacks on voters who are caught in this quandary helps them move away from the Party. I know, it did it for me. I expect another “if you don’t agree with me I’ll abuse you” response from you.     The statement has far too many assumptions and raises too many questions.
    
    What is a better form of punishment? If imprisonment doesn’t work why do some convicts become law-abiding citizens? What of prison’s protective role in isolating the irredeemably dangerous?

      The quotation is taken out of context. Philosophically he is correct, but as law-abiding members of society we expect/need to be protected from those who commit crimes against us. The effectiveness of incarceration in rehabilitating criminals has never been claimed. Additional strategies have shown to have mixed success.

    Yes that is one of their functions.
    
    However, they are to a large extent crim run environments where injustice is allowed by you and me to be metted out by scum. So for example you go to prison for say being caught red handed collecting too many magic mushrooms (in fact just for yourself). You then fail to follow orders of some deranged ape in there and end up maimed or dead. All good? Justice done?

So, what was learned during covid will be applied to manipulate the population to conform with ‘climate’ policies.

    The lockdowns will be the “climate change restrictions”. These could take various forms. Individuals could have carbon budgets that limit movements from home, or access to transport, particularly air travel.
    
    You won’t be locked in your home. However you won’t be able to drive your SUV without severe limitations. Let’s face it. The Green Party would support such measures today. So it is not fanciful to expect them in the next 5 to 10 years.

    People will be ‘zoned’. You will be restricted as to the number of times you can leave your ‘zone’ in your vehicle. If you exceed the number of ‘permitted trips’ you will be punished.
    Bollards are already being put up to physically prevent people moving freely. Number plate reading cameras are in place to monitor your movement.

  The easiest way to increase the number of food parcels is to make the users become dependent on them.
  The you ask the providors, many of whom are dependent donations and government contracts, on the degree to which the need is growing.
  Add to that, the seemingly ever increasing number of providors who are jostling for their space and it is difficult to know the true position.
  As charities report annually, on their activity to maintain their status as a charity, the figures should be reportable.

    I hope the school is fined millions, to the point they have to shut down. We are in a hybrid war, this isn’t just a ‘fringe group’ or a fad that will go away soon.
    This is an attack on a way of life we’ve all been part of for the last century and there are ideologues who hate it and want to utterly destroy it.
    They will do this by hijacking institutions, particularly education and government bureaucracy, as they have already done. But don’t kid yourself they won’t step this up to the next stage of full on fascism. The people of Germany and the world made that mistake with Hitler.
    
    I don’t use the analogy lightly. the ‘social justice’ warriors would turn Nazi without blinking. We saw a tiny example with the mob chasing Posie Parker. That was nothing.

Prebble’s article this morning is very interesting namely the sudden influx of 165,000 immigrants to New Zealand and the impact upon the country.
As a comparison with Australia they are expecting 400,000 immigrants this year and I am advised for retired Senior Immigration cousin in Canberra that they expect the large majority will be from the “Indian Sub-Continent”, as he puts it.
The current growth is incredible he postulates.
In the recent PM speech in Australia he is aiming to increase the population from currently 26 million to 28 million in a very short few years.
If the attention given to Indian PM Mohdi, who is visiting curently, many Indians are already there – they expression was it was like a giant pop concert aduation on his arrival in Sydney.

    As reported by the Productivity Commission led by Dr. Ganesh Nana:

    Visas for the lower skill-level (5) went from 2000 per year to 10,000. While visas for highest skilled migrants (level 1) stayed about the same (7000 per annum) throughout.
    
    Visas for lower-medium skilled (level 3 and 4 combined) migrants nearly TRIPLED — from 8000 per year to 23,000.

      I can confirm this. In 1994 my wife and two children both under two years old and having both a phd and a job offer scrapped in under the then point’s system. It was interesting to contrast the approach by respondents in 2 interviews I listened to this morning.

Ginny Anderson was all round the block talking to Mike Hosking trying to justify why things were OK when crime is out of control, offenders don’t get charged much and police resourcing is stretched and inadequate.

Then the other half was sadly listening to Morning Report and the guy from the Miami Zoo came straight on with a vigorous mea culpa about their treatment of the kiwi. No ifs and buts. No defence whatsoever of what they had done even when Guyon tried to give him an out by saying it could have been lack of knowledge. Just an acceptance they had stuffed up and an abject apology. It was quite refreshing.

Rather than reporting on the problem and the reversal, they gave Andersen a positive sound bite implying that the government’s trial of police tactical units is helping. Many on this blog have often noted/commented just how shallow the current govt’s talent pool is, but I don’t think any of us would have dared thought there ministers would have been that bad that they regularly have the look of “possums caught in headlights” when interviewed by media.

From top to bottom they are woeful.

Examples of the inept ministers in front of the media abound, and include:
Kiri Allen – who months ago promised criminal justice legislation which has never materialized;

Jan Tanetti – always appears surprised that every education stat is going the wrong way;

Ayisha Verral – consistently lies about statistics and gets caught out;

Ginny Andersen – has finally admitted that crime is going the wrong way, and got skewered this morning by Mike Hosking at 7.40 this morning.

Then there is Mr Man for all Jobs or Mr Fixit Chippie, himself, he is fluent in gaslighting – like what gang crime in Hawkes Bay?

The list could go on, Little, Robertson, Jackson, Mahuta etc.

Is there anybody in government who is remotely capable?

  IMO David Parker is highly “capable”. I agree with few of his policies (most of them are alarming) but he works extremely hard behind the scenes. For three years he has been formulating the replacements for the RMA. He has only come under scrutiny in the last few months. Even that seems to have faded away.

    Woods – the ultimate politician, but a big fail as a Minister. Housing – Kaianga Ora anybody? Energy – she opens mouth before she engages brain, and the tame media never question her
    
    Then there are the honorable mentions from the Greens
    
    James Shaw gives us a climate change Act with ETS scheme. He understands it so well he gives a corporate subsidy back to one of NZ’s single largest polluters
    
    And not forgetting…..
    Marama – she of social housing for the gangs, and aiding and abetting anti-social violence/crime in Wellington and Rotorua, while in the next breath tells the world that all domestic violence is because of CIS white men. Remember she knows, because she is Minister for solving domestic violence./// Yeah right, I am hearing a Tui’s ad coming!
    
    A final honourable mention must also go to the lady (her name eludes me (quite deliberately)), who saved NZ children from poverty, and was the Minister for hugs and kindness.
    
    Looking at the 2 lists of ministers, I am mindful of SCS, and all his comments about sheeple and how they all love the bunch of rank incompetent fools who have comprised the government’s of Jacinda Ardern and Chris Hipkins.
    
    There is nothing left to say except “God Save NZ” if the Coalition of Chaos win the election on 14th October.

Mike Hoskings interview with Jinny Anderson this morning confirms that Labour is living in a dream world.

She seemed to show more sympathy for the criminals particularly the young than for the police who are attacked and the victims of crime.

Recruiting more police is not going to stop more crime being committed when weak judges and a weak govt wont hold the crims to real account because they feel sorry for them due to their family backgrounds.

I noticed yesterday that My Food Bag list value dropped to 19c. It was floated at $1.85 on March 5, 2021 and has constantly declined since then. One wonders if the floating was conducted when the owners could see bad times ahead. The future should have been good with the country in lockdown and the Government trying to terrorise everyone into staying locked up.

Someone who could see the trend in May 2022 was Simon Henry. He called Nadia Lim (the public face of the company) a ‘bit of Eurasian fluff’ in response to what appeared to be an appearance on TV in an effort to muster a bit of support for the falling share price. Lim was (is?) ambassador for My Food Bag. Of course the media said everyone was outraged – but it seems Henry was right. (Henry had started several very profitable companies).
In the style of the communications mgr for the Miami Zoo (that’s some performance), Henry apologised for his comments.

My food bag floated for a value of $342million. The shareholders – Waterman Capital, Cecilia and James Robinson, and Theresa Gattung, Nadia Lim and others
All walked away with plenty of dollars. But they will be annoyed with the drop in share price as they had to leave 25% of the shares in for a year.

I found myself wincing in my bed this morning as I listened to Michael Hosking skewering Ginny Andersen, the police minister.
Poor Ginny – and I used to know Ginny – is out of her depth.
The trouble is that a Labour Party minister trying to sound tough and angry in a weak, soft on crime Labour government is not convincing.
She and her leader – who purports to be a ‘Boy from the Hutt’ but came from a nice, middle class area of the Hutt – can chunter ‘unacceptable’ all they like.
But the kids and thugs who are doing the crime and giving them the fingers don’t use big words like that.
Ginny might need to sack her media advisers because they’re giving her bad advice.
Media spinning won’t get her out of the hole she’s in.

  We need to get serious and to get tough.
  
  For a start we should be hammering good values in our homes, schools, marae, sports clubs etc.
  
  For people who do victimise others there must be certain and meaningful consequences, irrespective of age or situation.

  For the same reason there are disproportionately few Maori chemical engineers, cardiac surgeons or world class musicians. Goes right back to the value placed on Education.
  
  AFAIK the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra has zero Maori musicians. None. I could be mistaken but I have read the posted bios of every musician. All of them are either of European or Chinese ethnicity. To get into the NZSO you are the best of the best. All of the musicians have been playing since little children and have extensive overseas experience.
  
  I am surprised that the NZSO has not been accused of racism. It is just a matter of time. However until more Maori parents but their little kids violins and pay for years and years of lessons, the NZSO will have no (or very few) Maori players.

    I can think of two Maori singers who did very well and only a couple of others from New Zealand who might be in that class.

  The Professor actually said the quiet part out loud and said it’s not actually “Racism” but “Classism”. Basically, Maori don’t have the same opportunities because they’re poor. Good results apparently only happen if you’re rich so if we just give Maori a bunch of money they’ll get good results too.
  
  Those fools have an incredibly offensive view towards poor people and especially Maori. They seem to think they can’t achieve anything without the help of “their betters” (apparently being people like the Professor). The sad thing is that the constant repetition of that lie has lead to people believing it.

  That there are so few Māori scientists has been blamed on racism but there is also another reason: socio-economic inequality.
  
  You will find health inequities and high incidence of violence amongst the socio-economic disadvantaged also…
  Not just in Maori families, but also in PI, pakeha and new immigrant families at the bottom of the socio-economic heap.
  
  But it seems our Government prefers to look at issues through a race-based, bicultural lens only.

    It is my honest belief that any analysis or discussion of this type of issue, in this case numbers of Maori in science, and which doesn’t prominently mention personal choice and cultural value is seriously flawed.
    
    It is clear to me that, as a whole, Maori just don’t value or prioritise a career in science as 1. As much as other cultures and 2. As much as other career choices.
    
    This is neither good nor bad, it just is.
    
    To wrap this all up in racism and economic inequality driving this situation seems just dishonest to me. I’d like to see the learned professor’s data and evidence for her assertions so that we may scrutinise her conclusions.
    
    I’d also add, if it is racism and economic inequality behind it all, why is it that w heave seen all manner of Asian families (Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Cambodian, Thai, Filipino etc etc) arrive here with next to no financial resources and within 20-30 years, or less, their children or grandchildren are taking out our top school science prizes? I’ve seen it tens and tens of times.
    
    This Maori excuse-making is doing them no service. No service at all.

  Whether this wealth inequity is because of racism or something else, she never says. In a rather, unhelpful, repetitive and long-winded op-ed, she says almost nothing about how to solve the pipeline problem she has identified.

So Biden now upping the anti by allowing Ukraine to get F-16’s. Only a few months ago he was saying that move would be the start of WWIII.

Biden has said “No” then “Yes” to; tanks, missliles, patriots, and now F-16’s. He’s still saying “No” to NATO forces inside Ukraine (yeah right – too late) and to using nukes. But based on his actions so far we only have it wait a few more months for his tele-prompter to change his mind again.

    First of all, Putin isn’t “gobbling up Eastern Europe”. He’s struggling to win over the Donbas at a huge cost in both people and weapons. So the likelihood of him trying to take on the likes of Poland, Finland, the Baltic States is laughable. You’ve been sucked into the MSM narrative again. Putin might be evil, but he isn’t stupid. The moment he does that he knows his country is toast.
    What we have right now is Biden pushing Russia towards defending itself with their last resort – nukes. The alternatives are fast running out, and probably already gone. But still worth attempting to:

    2. Stop funding the evil Zelenskyy immediately

Re tax thresholds and bracket creep:

42 hours per week on the minimum wage ($22.70) = $953.40 per week. That rolls out to $49,756 per annum.

Income up to $48,000 per annum is taxed at 17.5%. Income between $48,001 and $70,000 is taxed at 30%. So the person on the minimum wage is being taxed at 30% on $1756 of income.

That’s absurd. It’s way beyond time that tax brackets/thresholds were adjusted. National is promising to index thresholds to inflation, which is the right thing to do. Labour has resisted this at every turn.

It defies logic that someone on the minimum wage should be paying tax on any of their income at the tax rate for medium incomes. This needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.

  Not so sure about your logic here. The minimum wage has increased massively. Relative to medium incomes there is not that much difference. The focus now needs to be on compensating and retaining the people that drive the economy. Not “looking after the most vulnerable” or whatever the latest PR line is to justify the creep towards communism and equal outcomes for most.

Megan Woods on the Hosking Show this morning stated her Govt is going to increase NZ’s Petroleum Fuel reserves. This was bought about as an answer to our fourth delivery of sub-standard Aviation Fuel.
Well, Megan, our reputation has already been trashed in this regard because your Cabinet colleagues took their eyes off the ball when Marsden Point Refinery closed down. Now, more Taxpayer money will be required to rebuild/recommission Marsden Point or build another facility/facility(s).
IMO, we couldn’t possibly find a bigger bunch of fuckwits to put in charge of our country.
PS: She didn’t say when work would commence.

    IMO, a truckload of Bitumin won’t ever get to Akld, it’ll all be used up filling potholes on the Whangerei Akld highway.
    Just imagine all the trucks on that road carrying AvGas, Diesel, Petrol, Bitumin, and Shipping Containers when North Port becomes Akld’s Container Terminal.
    A bunch of Student Politicians and Green Religion Evangelists have achieved all this in the short space of six years.

      Now – tanker trucks running. I understood that after a certain fuel was pumped to Auckland, a ‘liquid Bloc’ was put in, then a different fuel pumped to Auckland depending on what was required. That ‘Bloc” was truck tanked back to Marsden, and after cleaning it was then another ‘Bloc’
      It has been a long time since we were up there, and we caught the vid after it started.
      
      Someone may correct me, but there were empty truck tankers taking the ‘Bloc’ back to Marsden.

A four-day week means employees are paid for 40 hours but only work 32 of those.
Did they not wonder what the outcome would be for a 4 day, 10 hours per day, 40 hour week, as a comparison.
To date it appears that 22% of those responding were retired, as they voted “No”, a five-day working week is needed.

    What is the protocol here anyways. People are routinely named in NZ when they die in a fire, or car accident or even unusual flu deaths. In the US they provide full medical details of the death (anonymised without the name). In the communist hermit kingdom we get nothing.
    
    With covid itself – only the first covid death was named. And then all the details of the other covid deaths were suppressed. Did they all say they didn’t want to be in the paper.

Bank KYC private-info fishing expeditions?

Over here in Aus a certain large bank that owns a certain large (for NZ) bank is messaging customers stating they need to update their personal details for KYC (know your customer, anti money laundering etc etc) requirements.

Seems kind of reasonable, initially. Then upon starting to do this I notice it appears to be a privacy fishing expedition beyond just the routine ID documents. “Data is the new oil” as they say. Seems to be also about spreading your details around the various hidden and nefarious “data brokers” for profiling purposes.

Anybody residing in NZ noticing this also with their bank?

    They will limit the temperature coming out of the cylinder to 50c (probably using a mixer like your shower)…..BUT you still have to heat your cylinder to (I think around 64c) to kill any potention legionella that may live in it.
    
    So instead of spending money and enjoying your heat at 55-57c you now have to spend the same to enjoy a colder shower.
    
    All that so the four or so kiddies that get scolded every year because the parents are not supervising the bath run can keep them safe.

Isn’t it a pleasure to receive communications from the Ministry of Health’s (my very bad, Te Whatu Ora’s) factotums?

I’ve been on a waiting list for quite the while for something that can’t be done in the private sector even if I want to fund it – which I would if it could be done there never mind paying taxes for six decades because Big Sister Ardern knows best what I need.

But lo and behold, today I got a lovely little letter which informed me that I’m no longer on the waiting list! I’ve been moved off it! Yay!

Oh, oops – the Orwellian reason I have been removed, is because the local branch of the Wellington Whatu Health Monolith instituted by Andrew Little, – PBUH – currently has and I quote “an incapacity to treat your condition” and they don’t see that improving any time in the foreseeable future.

OK then.

      I do know what is medically possible in New Zealand, and when I was on the waiting list it was medically possible. Apparently it’s not medically possible any longer, and I wonder aloud if that’s because preferred ethnicities have jump the queue.     It is possible in a narrow sense, because I know that the technical resources are available, but they can’t prioritise people my age with my problem, given their current waiting list: because people who are younger than I (and/or of a different ethnicity than I) have overtaken me on the waiting list.
    
    And during a phone call they have told me that they don’t want to give me “false hope” (I guess that is somehow entirely different to “true hope”) that the situation for me will change for the foreseeable future, as they foresee it.

Who chooses WHO should manage the Reserve Bank ?
What are the requirements for someone to run the Reserve Bank?
Who determines these requirements ?
What exactly ARE the requirements for managing the most important financial institution in NZ ?
Successful banking history ?
Successful investment history?
Long-term involvement in NZ grass-roots monetary policies ?

Does our current Reserve Bank Manager fulfil all of these requirements?

  Mmmhmm. I know what you are alluding to. The reserve bank isn’t REALLY independent from the govt are they? They must follow govt regulations and are hired and paid by the govt. It’s not really any different to any govt organisation. That’s why interest rates are much lower than they need to be to constrain inflation. That’s why interest rates dropped to 0.25% during Covid. That’s why Orr allowed the govt to go on a $60 billion spending spree. Independent my a***hole.

“They will be responsible for delivering a national plan by September!”

  Easy way to tackle the list is to listen to the surgeons, they had a plan down here to reduce the list using the private hospital, they were told no, don’t know if they have let them yet.
  
  But let’s look for a solution the Labour Party way
  
  I know, let’s get rid of the health boards, change the name of the health system, bring in apartheid, how about we spend millions changing the names of every sign around every hospital. And for giggles let’s change every single persons health record to include a pronoun.
  
  Hmmm, list is growing, not many died yet
  
  What else can we do to kill them off so we don’t have to waste money healing them.
  
  I know, let’s raise the points they will need to get their operations. Money saved and a good amount of them will die either waiting or from the pain meds they are taking,

Electric cars should be charged a tax based on distance driven, as the vehicles damage roads more due to their extra weight, a British Tory think tank has proposed.

The Telegraph reports that the Centre for Policy Studies, which has close ties to the Government, said the current system of vehicle duty “treats motorists as a cash cow” and should be scrapped.

It warned that the longer ministers delay bringing in charges on battery powered cars, the more “politically difficult” the decision to do so will be.

The think tank said the Treasury faced a £25 billion budget black hole in the near future as receipts from fuel duty dwindled.

In New Zealand, duty on petrol and a diesel tax fund much of the country’s roading costs.

Here’s hoping the parole board don’t release him

Convicted murderer Mark Lundy will find out tomorrow if he will be released from jail – 23 years after he bludgeoned his wife and seven-year-old daughter to death.

Lundy, who maintains his innocence, has served 21 years behind bars for the double homicide of his wife Christine and daughter Amber at their Palmerston North home in 2000.

Tomorrow he will appear before the Parole Board to see if he is eligible for release. The hearing comes after he first appeared last August and told board members he was an innocent man.

Today Stuff asks “You can hold a kiwi in NZ, too. Do we have double standards?”

No they say. You’ve seen politicians holding kiwis at a kiwi release during the day in NZ
but the experts says “Although kiwi releases do sometimes happen during the day, where a member of the public might be able to touch the bird under direct supervision from an accredited professional, the process is done quickly to reduce the impact on the bird.”

But this is a misleading example from stuff.

The relevant example that they have written multiple articles on is that Sparky the NZ kiwi bird has been visiting schools in daylight for a pat with the schoolkids for 20 years.

He is a kiwi “advocacy” bird that is trained to stay up during the day and get pets from tourists and school groups alike.

The NZ pocket guide says ” Kiwi birds are nocturnal meaning that they usually forage for food at night and sleep during the day. However, because Sparky is an advocacy bird meaning that he is just for education purposes he has been acclimated to live during the day and sleep during the night like us humans.”

So yes. We are being hypocritical and Stuff is framing the argument dishonestly by omitting the relevant example which is in their own paper.
