      On the matter of the Wood affair my observation over the past the 50 years is that the current cohort of politicans lack the humility and grace of office. They see themselves as a cut above the peasants massaged by those around them as in “Yes Minister” ‘Yes Prime Minister”. Rather than seeing themselves as servants of the citizens they see themselves as Master of the citizens there to command and control the underlings.
      I used to look to and respect politicans as worthy of the office. Now I regard them as a dog turd on the sole of my shoes. I find it difficult to take any of them seriously rather I consider them the problem in my life not the solution.
      Now they will sneer and dismiss my considerations which only goes to prove I am correct.
      If you want respect first you have to show me respect and treat me with dignity. Then and only then will I reciprocate.

    Another lie from the climate radicals Mike. Note this line in the article: “Since satellite records began in 1979, summer Arctic ice has shrunk by 13% a decade, in one of the clearest signs of the climate crisis”
    
    Arctic sea ice satellite records go back to 1972 as per the historical NOAA data and the 1990 UN climate report. So why do they use 1979, and why lie about it? Because the sea ice extent was at a maximum in 1979, where it was at a minimum between 1972 and 75. If they were honest and showed all the data the narrative would collapse as even you would see that the Arctic Sea Ice extent has increased on average since 1972 when satellite records really started, and there has been NO STATISTICAL to date, only normal cyclic fluctuations.
    The same applies to the Antarctic sea ice, and the average trend over time is actually an increase if you go back to pre 1980 when record keeping started.
    You really need to do some wider reading than just articles in The Guardian.

        Our boat couldn’t get beyond 79deg N…whereas it had easily reached 80deg N the year before.

  …and the areas where Antarctica is losing ice is not because of climate change, as the geological scientific community knows it is because of what is under the ice. Sitting under the ice cap are a number of volcanoes doing what volcanoes do….not very convenient if you want to talk man made climate change!

    If you go back to the original paper about the presence of volcanoes under the Pine Island glacier … author’s name is Loose – they estimated the heat fluxes doing some fancy stuff with helium isotopes.
    
    This excess heat is small compared to the heat content of CDW20 (ca. 12 kJ kg−1), demonstrating that volcanic heat does not contribute significantly to the glacial melt observed in the ocean at the front of the ice shelf.
    
    CDW is the current that goes round Antarctic – its warming is the major contributor to ice melting.
    
    Go figure ….

      Lee C – possibly, but this pivot to ‘climate change’ from covid was widely predicted by people who were correct about all of the other ‘conspiracy theories’ that all came true.
      I might be paranoid, I really don’t think so. We are in the process of having the so called ‘great reset’ imposed on us.
      The world is in a very bizarre place currently. I have no doubt it will all sort itself out eventually, as it always does, but if we allow this push towards global governance via the unelected WHO, UN and WEF and others to continue, our children’s and grandchildren’s lives will be very miserable. They will wonder how we could possibly have let it get to that stage.
      
      The latest instalment of ‘Plandemic’ is worth watching. It has identified so many things that are being implemented to fracture society to enable this. The breaking apart of the family unit being the primary goal.
      
      Sounds hyperbolic. I hope it is, but I don’t think so.

There are only something like 176 days set aside for celebrating their achievements per year, and they are propped up by the government, every major corporate, and are able to get people cancelled for daring to not say they are the bestest thing ever.

On a side note, a number of the corporates have not put up their pride themed logos on social media (just like their Middle Eastern specific social media accounts) or have removed them very quickly lest they be targeted like Anheuser Busch or Target.

  After what has happened to Bud Light, Target and Nike, corporations are looking at the implications of supporting the multi headed beast that was the LBG movement but is now the 2SLBGTQI , and realise that there is no up side in doing so.

        Why? Some people naturally ask questions like are you partnered, married, do you have kids etc. especially when you’re new in the workplace. Is just honestly responding to their uninvited personal questions akin to “ramming your sexuality down my throat” or some such in your opinion? So what do we know.

Wood has misled the Cabinet Office on Multiple occasions.

He has not disclosed a pecuniary interest, despite ruling directly, and against official advice, against an airport that would have removed revenue from the entity that he had undeclared interests in.

This is the same pecuniary interest that is in a trust that was not declared by Wood’s wife, despite this trust being named after her. This is the same woman who is part of the council that is directly ruling on it’s shareholding, which will have an impact on share pricing.

I can beleive that one of these issues, taken in isolation, can be attributed to a lapse in judgment or an administrative omission of error. But the optics of the totality of these issues is certainly raising eyebrows.

As we dig deeper, it looks worse and worse…

What a pity for Aucklanders that Wayne Brown wasn’t Mayor from 2010 to get the amalgamated city up and running right, driving hard for efficiencies etc.

Re the Wood conflict of interest thing.

If National are elected they will make mortgage interest deductible for rental property owners. Given that many MPs are rental property owners – to the extent of a whole lot more than $13k – is there a conflict of interest here?

  Yes, but their increased borrowing is really for the benefit of others, making more accommodation available for generation rent. If anything, the deductibility should be augmented by scrapping the accommodation supplement and using that as a direct subsidy to landlords.

  I assume this is a wind up but i’ll bite.
  
  No ian, they have declared the rental ownership. Not tried to hide it and then been too incompetent to get rid of it when they said they would.
  
  How about Helen Clarke’s rentals? I’m guessing she doesn’t owe much on hers though.
  
  The rental interest deductibility rule change has affected thousands of mum and dad investors negatively. The policy reversal is common sense, not just to benefit mps with rentals. What you fail to grasp is this policy was basically an economically illiterate moron swinging a sledgehammer to calm house prices, without thinking that the extra costs would raise rents for the very people he claims to want to help.
  
  Every other business can deduct interest, why not on a rental?
  
  If this was the way forward it should have been campaigned on and then applied to any purchase not going forward. It should not apply retrospectively.
  
  People are allowed to invest however they want, it’s the hiding of it and clear incompetence of wood that most people have an issue with.

        Another good metric is GDP per Hour Worked. NZ’s performance is pathetic based on that figure, too.
        
        Politicians try to manufacture higher GDP by (1) importing more people; and (2) making us work longer hours* (just to keep up with a falling Standard of Living).
        
        When you take into account those 2 factors, then you get the true picture of our poor Economic Growth.
        
        *confirmed by the Productivity Commission: we HAVE been working longer hours in recent years.

      I think your difficulty is that on similar reasoning MPs could never vote for anything, from tax cuts to childcare subsidies, which might give them a personal benefit.
      The basic principle is to declare interests so that they can be assessed and acted upon if necessary.

      Yes, I agree it’s a conflict of interest, in that they are voting on something which will affect their personal finances. On the other hand, that was presumably also true when they voted to repeal interest deductibility (unless none of them have mortgages).
      
      The problem with the policy was it didn’t make sense. It was an attempt to make rental investments less attractive and so cool the housing market. What they missed was that rentals usually house more people than owned homes. So, if landlords sell to owner-occupiers, the number of people with a roof over their heads is likely to go down. And homelessness to go up.
      
      Also, the housing market problem is lack of supply. Land is so expensive that new built houses tend to be at the average to high end of the market, not the lower end that lower income people need. Rules around housebuilding make it more expensive that it used to be, or needs to be, again reducing the lower cost options. A small market a long way from overseas manufacturers means a lack of competition in home building products, another factor in increased costs.
      
      These are the sort of things that needed to be addressed to make a long-term, sustainable, difference. They all take time. A policy likely to increase homelessness in the meantime is not a good idea.

    Story in the Herald this week about a couple who had applied for 50 rentals. All applications unsuccessful. On the face of it, high risk. Parents both 20 years old, one child and a baby on the way. Most landlords will look no further.

  I’m not sure if you are being serious. National is simply committing to reverse what was a very stupid policy change. Hopefully National and ACT will reverse hundreds of decisions made over the last two terms of government, because they have impoverished the nation.
  
  Your example has no resemblance to the Airport shares example. It is analogous to the Minister of Education having shares in a private education provider. Or the Minister in charge of building regulations having shares in a construction company.
  
  What is and what is not a conflict of interest requires judgement. It is not usually a complex judgement but the Cabinet Office is well resourced and there to help in such judgements.

  No, there no conflict of interest here, the question of interest deductibility is one of tax consistency.
  
  All businesses are allowed to deduct the cost of doing business including interest charges.
  
  Labour’s disallowance of the interest charge was an obscene abuse of power which was inconsistent with global accounting and tax practice. It was a ideological decision to punish a class of our society and has contributed to reduced supply and higher rentals.

Minister hasn’t got an answer to an oral question from the opposition spokesman, so Labour run interference. This occured yesterday when Robertson got to his feet and quoted the parliamentary standing orders rule book for the Speaker to make a ruling on a repeat weekly question from Mark Mitchell to Ginny Andersen.

The question, “given reported levels of rising crime, what assurances can she give New Zealanders that they feel safe”.

In short she has no answer, so Parliament’s bully, Robertson runs interference…..

In summary, Labour didn’t have a clue in 2017, and they are still clueless today. How can the sheeple still support the Coalition of Chaos?

  Had a good chat with my teacher daughter today. She was shocked the lates offer was accepted. She personally voted against it, and thinks it’s no better than the previous offer. From her perspective all they did was shuffle the numbers around, and change the sequence of a few things, but they aren’t getting any more money.

      What was ‘grammatically correct’ 200 years ago, wasn’t ‘correct’ 100 years ago, and of course it is no longer ‘correct’ today.
      
      As long as we get the meaning of the message being conveyed in a clear and concise manner then the language is ‘correct’.
      
      Long story, but basically I’m saying most people understand the context when someone says my ‘besties’ or ‘one of my besties’. As you say, it’s plural/collective.

In reports of the electricity crisis in South Africa I see they keep talking about coal-fueled power, and how solar power is the way ahead.

Am I right in guessing the coal used is lignite, of which we have billions of tons in Southland?

Also, the reports talk of privatising the monopoly, Eskom, as a solution. Is that it? Sun or lignite?

  Being a ‘cash under the counter’ business seems to be the attraction. I always ask for a paper receipt (which is never forthcoming unless I ask) — just to be a nuisance.

Oxfam looks to have shot itself in the foot, or in the feet of the scores of thousands of the world’s hungry whom it says it helps.

This time it’s a social media video with a look-alike depiction of J.K. Rowling and wearing a “terf” badge. The term is an acronym for “trans-exclusionary radical feminist,” that is, feminists who oppose trans-gender “males” sharing with females facilities such as lavatories and dressing sheds.

The Telegraph reports:

“The charity, which aims to combat global poverty, uploaded a Pride Month animation depicting three characters staring angrily at rainbow-coloured silhouettes designed to represent LGBT people.The figure likened to Rowling wore a badge saying “terf”.

Oxfam has now cut from the video the section aimed at Rowling.

Earlier this year, an Oxfam guidebook urged its staff to avoid using the terms “mother” and “father”, instead calling for the universal use of “parent”.

International charities diverting to issues they weren’t formed to address surely put at risk widespread support from donors.

Remember when everyone said there’s not enough emphasis on STEM?
Well it seems some people can’t cope with STEM. They broaden it to STEAM where the A = arts.
So now STEM is replaced with STEAM and gets flooded by the Arts people….
and we’re back to where we started: not enough emphasis on STEM.

Where a STEM robotics challenge is all technical: building and programming robots etc, STEAM robotics challenges encourage things like singing a rap song about robots.

It occurs to me that this basic theme is seen elsewhere too. For example:
* Sport is a sausage-fest. Not enough women in sport because women are physically disadvantaged.
* Solution: create women only sport categories to provide a competitive space for women.
* But that’s not inclusive enough, so widen the women’s category to include penis-enabled women too.
* And now we’re back to a sausage fest.

    It is all because they do not have enough science, maths, tech & engineering teachers, so they get semi qualified teachers to teach the disciplines as STEM poorly.
    
    I can confirm your comment about STEAM being the most recent incarnation of the educators mashing subject matter together to resolve the lack of qualified teachers to teach specific core subjects to school students.
    
    My son is Year 9 (3rd form to old timers like me or Std 7 if you are a South African), this term in maths my son’s class have been studying geometric shapes and symmetry. This is a mash of arts in maths. They have not been learning about area or rules like measuring area of circles, circumference or the use of Phi etc.
    
    No, they have been looking at symmetry in moko designs, and of African round houses – colouring them in to get symmetry (Art). When my wife questioned this, she got frowned upon by the teaching staff. He is wasting his time attending school, and it is no surprise leading schools are turning their backs on NCEA1.
    
    To fix this, our son is being pulled out of this school, he will be home taught supplement with teaching through Crimson Global Academy, other private specialist tutoring so that he is doing the Cambridge curriculum and will be doing a full timetable of study.

      Neither of our kids spent a day in school (though they both did Chemistry through Correspondence School).
      
      Both excelled (and continue to do so) in STEM, both getting STEM degrees. Both finished the whole school maths syllabus at age 15 (inc. calculus etc).
      
      NZ is completely screwed if Y9 kids are colouring in rondavels for maths. Bullshit. That’s Y1 stuff. And not even Y1 maths!

  He’s even more impressive in person. I watched him closely on Thursday as he stayed around talking to people after his well-attended Back on Track meeting for nearly an hour. Then in the evening, he lingered for 90 minutes after his scheduled departure time from dinner.
  
  When he talks to people he looks them in the eye, and holds onto eye contact. You see some MP’s looking around for an escape route, or to see who’s next, but not Luxon. From talking to people afterwards, there was pretty much universal agreement that for the time they were talking to him, he gave them his undivided attention.

It should be STEM subjects and ARSSE subjects.
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) / (ARts,Social Science, English)

But clearly we are seeing in society they want to put social science concepts in the same category as facts.

The US government is hiding the existence of “intact and partially intact” alien craft, a former intelligence officer claims.

David Grusch is speaking out after he says he broke ranks to provide classified information to the US Congress, information he says was deliberately withheld from them.

36-year-old Grusch, a decorated combat veteran of the US war in Afghanisation, told The Debrief that he became aware of efforts to hide the existence of these craft while working with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), serving first as the NRO’s representative to the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force and then as the NGA’s co-lead for UAP analysis and representative to the task force.

10 month holiday at home playing on the Xbox

Fueled by alcohol, Tango grabbed the young woman by the hair, dragging her to the ground.

When the victim’s friend, Lucy McKew jumped in to assist, Tango turned her attention to McKew, grabbing her hair and forcing her to her knees and proceeding to slam her head into a low-lying brick wall.

As McKew lay on the ground, Tango continued the attack with several strikes including seven blows to the head, and a foot stomp to the body so forceful, she was left with a shoe imprint on her arm for three weeks.

McKew suffered a traumatic brain injury requiring months in and out of a concussion unit, post-traumatic stress disorder, visual impairment, panic attacks and she could not go out in public or work for several weeks.

Waikato University researchers have found Pharmac’s 2021 decision to introduce ethnicity criteria on game-changing diabetes drugs has helped improve inequities in our healthcare system for Māori and Pacific people.

The team, led by Te Whatu Ora endocrinologist and University of Waikato Senior Lecturer Dr Ryan Paul (Ngāti Maru, Hauraki), said Pharmac should now consider rolling out ethnicity criteria for all medications.

  New Zealand’s most common type of cancer is skin cancer, and in the most serious type of this, melanoma, NZ has the highest incidence in the world.
  
  Skin cancer is overwhelmingly a disease that afflicts white-skinned people.
  
  If NZ is going to have race-based preferences in State medical treatment, pale skinned people need attention for skin cancer.
  
  If this happens, the growing number of white-skinned Maori will need to think twice whether they identify officially as Maori.

Folic acid will be added to NZ bread from August to reduce incidence of spina bifida in babies.

From the Otago Daily Times:

“Consuming folic acid just before conception and early on during the pregnancy is vital to protecting babies from the risk of major birth defects such as spina bifida, but as just over half of pregnancies in New Zealand are unplanned, many people will not be taking folic acid supplements during this critical time,” deputy director of public health Dr Harriette Carr said.

Folate occurs naturally in leafy greens such spinach, in lentils such as beans and peas, in asparagus, in beets, in citrus fruit, and eggs. Folate tablets are also available.

Given that many sexually active young women won’t eat much of these foods. But will they eat bread? What was once the staple food is present far less in the Western diet.

Cereals at breakfast might be a more typical part of young women’s diet, but it would be more sensible for them to take folate pills while they are sexually active.

The ODT report notes that for young mothers, 83 per cent of pregnancies are unplanned. The neural tube closes 15 to 28 days after conception, and it may be too late to take folate when pregnancy becomes apparent to the mother.

The folate requirement comes after the food industry did not meet a voluntary target of folate in 50 per cent of bread.

The new rule doesn’t apply to “organic” flour for bread making. Presumably, one reason is that unrefined flour naturally contains folate. However, no exception has been declared for brown or multi-grain breads.

New Zealand’s present voluntary system aimed to fortify up to half of packaged bread, but that target has not been reached.

In August, 2018, in NZ Doctor, Dr Andrew Marshall, a Wellington pediatrician, said:

““The scientific evidence overwhelmingly favoured the safety and efficacy of mandatory fortification in 2006-2008, which is why NZ and Australia agreed to implement mandatory fortification in 2009. The New Zealand Government of the time pulled back from that commitment, and ever since we have had a regime of voluntary fortification which was never going to deliver the potential health outcome desired.”

The New Zealand Labor party has pushed for mandatory fortification of folate in bread flour.

In 2018, the Labour Party’s food safety spokesperson, Dr Ashraf Choudhary, said New Zealand should follow countries such as Australia, Canada, the United States. (Choudhary, an agricultural scientist, was an MP from 2002 to 2011.)

    There seems to be some link, Ghost. Research seems to show too little folate may be bad in cancer risk, but over consumption may be bad in prostate cancer (link below).
    
    It would be good if some flour without added folic acid could be available in supermarkets for home bread makers. Organic outlets aren’t close to everyone in the country, and tend to be expensive.
    
    I wonder how they define organic wheat?
