National has listed value capture charging as an election campaign promise.

If they accept the principle that public investment results in private profit windfalls that should be taxed then they need to consider the obverse.

Turning the coin on a value capture tax to the Govts actions resulting in private devaluation it should be possible to then raise a damages compensation claim against the Govt, councils & Housing NZ for your neighbourhoods property values dropping substantially because state housing is secretly approved to be built in it without consultation and consideration ?

The existing homeowners originally paid a premium for their neighbourhood property & associated amenity value & will logically suffer a significant financial loss as a result.

  Second, we will be making use of innovative funding and financing tools to boost investment in infrastructure.
  
  Third, we will develop National City and Regional Deals, so that central government can partner with local government to create long-term pipelines of regional projects.
  
  Fourth, we will create an infrastructure fast-track consents process to make it easier to build the infrastructure New Zealand needs for the future.

Stop paying useless drones to sit at home and smoke weed. Allow a fully capitalist system with minimal government interference and reduce taxes to about 25%. Stop providing lifelong housing to those who feel entitled to it. You cannot do anything that Labour cannot undo. To assist community providers in reducing long-term benefit dependency, National will also introduce a bonus payment of $1000 for under 25-year-olds who have been on the Jobseeker benefit for longer than a year, who find work and remain off benefit for 12 months.
        
        – Allow a fully capitalist system with minimal government interference and reduce taxes to about 25%.
        ** National will be Delivering tax relief
        More taxes and more spending leave everyone worse off. Unlike Labour, National believes Kiwis should keep more of what they earn.
        
        – Stop providing lifelong housing to those who feel entitled to it.
        ** National: Housing Restructuring and Tenancy Matters Amendment) Act 2013. The ethos behind this policy was that social housing should be available for those in highest need, for the duration of that need. This superseded the earlier ‘state home for life’ policy introduced from around the 1950s.
        The reviewable tenancies process was designed to assess existing tenancies against criteria relating to affordability, accessibility and sustainability, and to shift households deemed ineligible for social housing into private housing, with reviews to occur at least every 3 years.
        
        – You cannot do anything that Labour cannot undo.
        ** Labour haven’t ripped up the roads of National significance, the fibre cable roll out, and the rail trails National built. In fact built infrastructure is the only thing Labour can’t tear down.
        
        – Reduce the Public sector by introducing performance goals ….. and get rid of those who do not achieve them. Simple.
        ** The National-led Government has set 10 challenging results for the public sector to achieve over the next five years. Ministers and a public sector chief executive have been appointed to lead each result and will be accountable for demonstrating real progress against his or her result.

      Here are a couple of examples of National generated and Labour continued / finished roading projects…. Waikato expressway, Tauranga port connections, transmission gully.
      
      Nothing is full proof but with a well publicized list of necessary infrastructure it is easier for the opposition to hold the next Labour government to account.
      
      I’m sure KBers remember Labour’s call for shovel ready infrastructure projects when the covid scam began. Who can name a shovel ‘ready project which was actually started/completed?
      
      A 30 year infrastructure list provides the projects to invest in when the next downturn begins and the government has to inject money and jobs into the economy. Infrastructure generates the cash required to pay back loans.

        National can’t fix NZ because over the last four or five decades they have enabled or even assisted Labour in embedding an irreversible socialist political/ economic system in NZ.
        
        They let all the opportunities for real change slip by and now it is too late. Everything Luxon says is just hot air. There will be no “outcomes” and his emphasis on achieving them is the blunder that will in future allow the subversive media to hang him politically.
        
        Furthermore his commitment to Net Carbon Zero if not a blatant lie will confound any small chance that things may improve. If he sincerely thinks the Kyoto targets can be met he needs to explain how in precise detail, because so much of our economic and social well being depends upon it.
        
        So far there is nothing but promises to release policy soon. When treasury says it is almost certain that as a condition of Kyoto NZ will be penalised by having to buy billions of dollars ($12-30 billion latest estimates) of fake “carbon credits”.
        
        And here we are getting all het up over Wood’s $13000 worth of airport shares.
        
        What an abject farce. NZ is paying the price for six decades of conniving at communist subversion, and voters (Labour and National) are reaping what they have sowed.

    So the expressway north of Auckland is owned by a foreign entity, you pay a minimal fee to use that road, when we did it the price was $2.60, it’s a great road, it takes lots of time of the trip, so to stay with Nats you would prefer the status quo snd go the extra 30 minutes snd the added cost of fuel right?
    
    So who you hoing yo vote for? Have yo be Labour, because you won’t want to vote for ACT as they will be propping up Nats.

      Not sure what your talking about my G. I am referring to National wanting to charge people a tax on the perceived gain in value of an asset (house) casused by the government doing something said person had no control over.
      
      eg. Are you happy to pay the govt a $3000 becuase they build a cycle lane outside your house and say that the value of your house has gone up $10,000 becuase of it?
      
      I guess by the downvotes my orginal issue wasn’t clear. Happy for infrastructure, not happy for capital value gain taxes.

      Not a customer either, Steve – I get through life on what my partner refers to as ‘weapons-grade, natural testosterone’ – but the Head of National Organised Crime unit said recently that:
      ‘Our people pay somewhere around 80 to 100 dollars a point, around $400 a gram roughly. In the United States it’s five dollars a point.’

        My theory with drugs is it is paid for overseas with jewelry. The number of ram raids done and the amount stolen does not line up with the jewelry market in NZ.
        It is mailed overseas and the drugs come in by return mail.
        Customs would not have a clue what is going on.

Otago Uni seems to be blaming covid for it getting enrolment numbers very wrong, even though covid apparently did not impact 2021 and 2022 enrolments. Yes other causes are included in the forecasting fail, but even some of them are at least partly related to covid. Plus taxpayer funding not keeping up with inflation.

Not their fault then. More money from taxpayers required.

Sorry no sympathy. Yes big dollars involved but the amount pales into insignificance alongside the massive financial and other impacts of covid on individuals, households and businesses.

The small number of shares Wood owns should not be an excuse for not selling his shares. How can you have a rule that you cannot have shares above a certain number or value if there is or appears to be a conflict of interest? The rule has to be simple. No share if there appears to be a conflict of interest.

    That is not actually the law. The size of the interest has to be large enough to be seen as being able to influence the decisions of the decision maker. There will be differing views as to what is such an interest. $1,000 worth of share definitely would not be, but $13,000 might be.
    In this instance the main problem is the failure to disclose. Also holding on to the shares when advised to sell them.

  The key to me is that Wood declined the North Shore application for expansion for ‘many good reasons’ whilst holding undisclosed shareholding in Auckland Airport – Auckland Airports result would have been negatively impacted by an approval for North Shore – the quantum of shares is irrelevant. This moves it from an oversight to very very dodgy. Whilst I can accept SOME lack of ability from a cabinet minister this lack of integrity is a whole different story !

There’s no downside for National & Act with the Michael Wood saga. If Hipkins sacks Wood, Labour’s Cabinet is further weakened and it may fracture. If he doesn’t, he’ll open himself to criticism for not enforcing standards for his Ministers. Neither is likely to appeal to voters.

  If Labour loses in October, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Hipkins bails out. He’s had 15 years in Parliament including six in government, and I doubt the prospect of a lengthy spell in opposition would inspire him. Three of the main points raised in article.
1. According to Canada’s Department of Natural Resources, natural disturbances such as forest fires, have been part of the natural forest cycle for thousands of years and most often contribute to their regeneration.
2. The boreal forest is particularly vulnerable to fires because it is mainly composed of resinous trees, whih have a high flammability index.
3. It should be noted that this is the time of the year (Spring) when human activities are responsible for 50% to 75% of vegetation fires.

So, yes, there are man-made causes for forest fires.

By interfering in the natural cycle of fires we have created a situation where the ever increasing fuel load results in bigger, hotter, fires which do more permanent damage. Airports are regulated by the Civil Aviation Act that was passed earlier this year. It had lots of changes from the earlier 1990 Act.

Michael Wood was the Minister who introduced it, and it didn’t materially change that I can see when it was finally passed with Kiri Allen in charge of aviation.

What may be the last rook in the Canterbury region was shot and killed in North Canterbury recently.
Back in the 90s, Canterbury’s rook population was estimated to be in the thousands.
About a week after various sightings on a North Canterbury farm, it was killed by a worker on the farm.
Rooks are still known to live in Marlborough and Otago regions.

NZ Health regulators have refused a recent FOI request claiming collecting the requested information regarding a particular batch of the comirnaty covid vaccine would require “manual collation”.

This is clearly a lie. How can they possibly implement an experimental product under emergency use authority, and not be tracking the outcomes? They spent enough money on a vaccine register!

As the article notes:

Dear Antipodean readers, you should know that the Kiwi Ministry of Health spent $38 million establishing a bespoke Covid Vaccination Register. The database records every administered vaccine, including the patient details and batch number. Yet they are manually collating just like their British counterparts.

The article is specifically about the UK equivalent to Medsafe, the MHRA, but the authors, both trained medical professionals, note that NZ is doing the same thing.

The parallels in the inability to provide critical information regarding vaccine harms is disturbing.

    @miltonF – that’s an excellent point! “80,000 dead”, monotonous daily ‘cases’ counts in all of the media, but they are trying to tell the public they can’t tell us how many people got a specific batch of the vaccine?
    
    Completely implausible. If by any chance this was true then Medsafe as an organisation needs to be wiped out and everyone employed by them needs to lose their job instantly. It would be an incomprehensible level of ineptitude. Of course it isn’t, it’s a blatant refusal to give up the information.

From the article, there is no mention that the establishment is behaving unlawfully. The Green MPs are all affronted, but unless the strip club is breaking employment laws, what do they want? I guess the strippers could go on strike for better pay and conditions. If that doesn’t work they are probably being paid the market rate for erotic dancers.

Carlson approaches it in a rational manner. Cui bono. No proof and like with the pipeline, unequivocal evidence may never be found. His logic is hard to argue with.

The answer re owning shares in trusts earlier in the week on the declaration was NO.

From the Herald “After being elected to the council last October, Fairey filed a declaration of interest stating neither she nor her husband has a financial interest in any company or business, and neither of them has a beneficial interest in a trust.”

Updating is not good enough imho. She lied on her declaration on a subject that was to have a strategically and politically important vote. And she and her husband knew it. There has to be some consequences.

I must admit I was surprised to read so many comments yesterday about KB folks who had grown up in households with lousy cooks.

I was surrounded by good, basic home cooks as I grew up and am always surprised when I meet NZers who can’t cook.

My brothers are very good cooks and have been from their primary school days.
My father had a limited repertoire – usually snapper & boiled potatoes, but my mother & step-mother produced a variety of yummy grub, which I still try to replicate.

In the 2 years I was a boarder at NZ Friends School, I can’t remember any meal I disliked…and I’d love to get my hands on the recipe for the Trifle we were served every Sunday lunchtime.

I wasn’t exposed to “fine dining” until I met hubby…and quickly realised that the poor guy didn’t
have a clue about decent food. …Which sadly means that I’ve been in charge of the cooking for the last 50 years or so…. (sometimes relieved when my daughters are on deck – both fine cooks).

  Mum died on Sunday, funeral today in Palmy at 2pm.
  
  Born in ‘34, grew up in Daniel St, Newtown, big vege garden and chooks. Her father used to put sacks (!) of whitebait on the garden as fertiliser. Roast chicken was home killed and only once or twice a year.
  
  One of the best home cooks I’ve known. Renowned for her dinner parties in the 60s and 70s. She’d be well underway on a Thursday for a Saturday dinner. Always fresh coffee beans, blue cheese and olive oil etc on hand even in the 70s which was a rarity back then.
  
  Just had a magic touch in the kitchen and a treasure trove for recipes and food memories.

      We organised for her to do a big brain dump and dig out her old recipe books a few years ago. A book was produced and which also included a wealth of her food and early life memories and which was printed, bound and copies distributed amongst the family.

      Love this post. I remember Hutchinsons in Queen St, Auckland. It was the only place I can recall that had fresh coffee beans and exotic cheeses back in the 60s. The smell as you walked past was to die for…in a good way. It seemed so sophisticated in boring old Auckland back then.

  Agree. My Christchurch mother and grandmother were both superb cooks. Nothing over or undercooked, beautiful fresh vegetables and herbs from dad’s garden, plenty of fresh fruit from windfalls or local orchards, plenty of dairy and even eggs preserved to get through the non-laying season, now thankfully a thing of the past.
  Everything was made from scratch except the occasional treat of a cardboard box of ice-cream or a bag of broken biscuits from the local corner shop.
  However we weren’t keen on housework nor were we knitters or seamstresses so perhaps that’s where others’ talents lay. And many of our mothers went out to work, even in the 50’s and 60’s.

    We still do that. Home baked sourdough bread, home made bacon, hams, salamis and sausages. Plenty of preserved veggies. And all meals cooked from scratch at home.

Orakei Maori want to buy back Ports of Auckland land as it was apparently stolen from them. A couple of things, firstly, it seems to have escaped them that the Port is situated almost exclusively on reclaimed land. You know, land that didn’t exist when the Maori claim it was “stolen”. Lol. Secondly, in 2011, the Iwi received an $18m full and final settlement of all historical claims resulting from acts of the Crown. So their land wasn’t stolen as they claim, it was paid for in 2011.

Both Andrew Little and Michael Wood are referred as Trade unionists. They are bureaucrats working for a Union they have not come from the factory floor, waterfront etc. Not been voted as the works delegate, or onto local and national executives.
Little is a lawyer, and Wood has been churned out of that morass of intellectual shit the Princess Street branch of the so called Labour Party (joke). Yes it was decades ago when I sailed with the likes of Dave Morgan, Terry Adams (RIP) and the impact of Tass Bull on the wharves and Pincher Martin on the ships.They were characters you had to stand up to them a battle of wits they knew their awards back to front and fought for their members unlike the employers who were generally useless. Poor management has been the scourge of NZ and still is. I sailed with one Master who shall remain nameless sorted out discussions with the delegate in a unique way. I know its a lost cause but Little and Wood and their ilk are not Unionists.

  The Senior Master in SCONZ was a tall imposing Master of the Old School.
  
  He had the respect of the Seamen’s Union Members, Officials and also the Officer’s Unions.
  
  He could sort things out in a jiff by his power of Command.

Tinetti getting absolutely ripped to shreds by Gerry Brownlee in the privileges committee.

She is spinning around in circles trying to say that she had no influence over something she was clearly influencing.

It’s terrifying to think someone of her intellect and morals was teaching our children and probably will again once booted out either today or in October.

I just finished watching the Privileges Committee about Jan Tinetti. She is dancing on the head of a pin.

In an email between her office and the PMO it stated that it would be ideal if the data was released at the same time as another announcement.

She is saying that is different than her saying she wanting the date released at the same time as the anoucment.

Dear Mr Luxon,
Please stop talking about stupid stuff that does not concern you.
Stop giving potential voters silly reasons to not vote for National.
Talking about how many children people should or should not have is just a distraction from all the other issues we face.
Don’t go down these rabbit holes which give your opponents easy pickings.
Focus on the reality.
Choices about how many children, dogs, cars, holidays citizens have or might have are not subjects worthy of comment or advice from a political leader.
It only spreads division.

  Its started and is going to escalate over the next 10 years.
  We are going to see dramatic changes in many countries because of it.
  Our Birth rate is ok (2.1?) but way lower than it really should be.
  Korea’s is around .8. They are fucked. Probably only a few million Koreans left by 2050-if that.
  Its going to be a massive problem for China.
  But, I take your point. We need to start by getting rid of the current Govt.

  If you read the article you will see the context.
  The author, Bridie Witton, constantly pulls one remark out of context (in this case the answer to a question ‘what can we do to help our infrastucture problem) and makes that the whole focus of her article.
  The only way Luxon can stop articles like this is to stop making speeches, or ban ‘journalists’ from attending.
  You just have to recognise that Witton will try to bring National down, and ignore her pieces.

This Katie Hobbs is a right pile of dung. This is the Woman who beat Kari Lake in thre Governor Election for Arizona. Hobbs was also responsibe for the vote counting. She refused to recuse herself and so a crooked result happened. How convenient.

How long have NZ universities been using an Irish grading term for junior lecturers?

An article reproduced at the Red Radio web site (about Maori wanting to trademark their “treasures” – taonga – specifically manuka honey) describes the writer, David Jefferson, as “a senior lecturer (above the bar)” at Canterbury University.

The Academia section at Stack Exchange provides this definition of teacher gradings at Irish universities (descending order):

Professor (a.k.a, Full Professor)
Associate Professor
Senior Lecturer or Statutory Lecturer
Lecturer (above the bar)
Lecturer (below the bar)

The last two may be sometimes listed as “college lecturer” and “lecturer”. Most new academic staff in Ireland are appointed as lecturers (below the bar).

Canterbury University’s web site lists its academic grades in ascending order:

Assistant Lecturer (entry level without PhD)
Lecturer (entry level with PhD)
Senior Lecturer (Career grade)
Senior Lecturer Above the Bar
Associate Professor (equivalent to Reader in the UK system)
Professor
Distinguished Professor
