I went to an interesting public meeting on “20 minute cities” in Hamilton last night at the Fairfield Baptist church hall. It is a big hall but it was standing room only. Far more than the organizers, a ratepayers group, expected. The mood was distrustful of the council.

A couple of city councilors, Angela O’Leary Deputy Mayor and Mark Donovan, were invited there to speak although they didn’t say very much. Mark Donavan talked about how a 20 minute city was about “living locally” and being able to “walk or cycle” . The crowd were not buying it. Someone shouted “Trojan Horse”. There were comments from the crowd about getting rid of cars, WEF, and climate change.

Mr Donavan said something about how he didn’t know very much about 20 minute cities, which prompted a man near me to shout out “so why did you come here?”

One of the organizers told the crowd that if they continued to be rude to the invited speakers, the speakers would leave.

A few minutes later, the speakers left.

My impression of the meeting was that this was a real grass roots expression of anger, distrust and frustration. The Hamilton Council has spent a lot of money on speed bumps and other “traffic calming” measures and the people are not happy. A message has been sent to the council but I do not think the council will listen.

  We should fire most of our city planners and let the public decide where and how they want to get places. Hamilton City Council is killing the CBD and suffocating the economic life of the city through appalling traffic decisions that slow everyone down and make travel frustrating and dangerous. They spend our money as though it grows on trees and we have little to show for it except for a worse quality of life.

    Hamilton CBD is a wasteland. Parking is crap and many, many businesses have moved to the big malls. On Friday and Saturday nights it’s full of drunks and has a decidedly menacing feeling. Between the drunks and the homeless and beggars it’s just shit!

  The raised pedestrian crossings/boy racer deterrent measures are more frequent in Palmerston North than rabbits in Central Otago.
  It appears that every time there is a complaint about speed or behaviour a new batch are installed.
  The record, so far, seems to be six on a road that is less than a kilometre in length.
  It is often difficult to distinguish between pedestrian crossing and raised crossing at night.
  This problem will surely grow with the passage of time and fading of white paint indentifying them.
  Not to mention the addition cost of Maori language needing to be added to the signs.

    Talking about fading of white road markings, is it just me or has the quality of paint these days total crap? They seem to need painted within a year of being done.
    A gravy train for road painters that the bureaucrats either haven’t noticed, or it’s one of their buddies getting the contract in exchange for a brown envelope?

  If there was a great demand by people that all of the amenities they might need were within a short stroll of their houses, this would have already happened.
  The people pushing this nonsense are not our friends.
  Which councillors campaigned on these 15 minute neighbourhoods?

  20 minutes of waffle before getting to the subject matter, from the organisers introducing members of their committee and the vice president withering on about Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz – nothing to do with the meeting.
  Organisers had no control from the beginning. Allowing an audience member access to a microphone very earlier in the presentation stating that the presenters had disrespected man whenua of Kirikiriroa then continued to berate them drove the presenter away. The meeting then just degenerated into a farce that I left.

  This lot have wrecked the health system wrecked the education system wrecked the criminal justice system, sort to divide our society into Maori and Others and lead to the biggest increase in soceital dysfunction the country has ever seen.

    Labour had wrecked all the above prior to the previous election including the descimation of our wealth with their nonsensical, most expensive in the OECD, covid fraud, yet nZ voters rewarded them with the first ever outright majority.
    
    So while I’m on record stating Labour will lose, we should not be complacent and must help National or Act as much as we can.
    
    Volunteer and or donate to act or national to ensure we don’t suffer another 3 years if ineptitude.

      15% head count reduction in first year.
      
      Move a lot functions out of government like a lot of the registry functions in DIA and MBIE. Retain ownership of the IT but outsource the staff as much as possible: All the small registers like Licensed Builders, Electrical Workers etc dont need to be in Public hands, could easily be privatising with a bolstered Audit Office doing regular system reviews and enforcement activity
      
      Cull Ministries for special groups; Maori, Pacific Peoples, Women…. cut back arts funding, the taxpayer doesn’t need to do it, instead create a charitable trusts to fund those activities and people can donate to support the arts of there choice
      
      And change the Local Government Act – remove General Competence, and set a schedule of compulsory activities couple with mandatory maintenance schedules for Water assets and Roading assets…..

    Sadly, the worse this government is will mean that Nats/ACT won’t have to make major changes to the way governments run.
    
    At an ACT meeting recently I was encouraged that ACT are prepared to sit on the cross benches if the namby-pamby Nats don’t get a spine. Let’s hope so.

Been wondering what is a “strategic asset”? What makes Auckland airport a “strategic asset” that the Council’s very minor shareholding is held to be sacrosanct? The airport is not going away, no one is going to move it to Hamilton or Whangarei. It is not going to be converted into a fun park or a kiwifruit orchard. More importantly the Council is a very junior stockholder. They cannot influence any decisions to any extent. They can’t create a situation where the airport would give some preferential position to Auckland ratepayers as opposed to other ratepayers in say the Waikato or Northland or even non-ratepayers in the city.

As an income generating asset it is a disaster. The returns over the long run are poor and it faces almost continuous upgrading and capital inputs. Councils are not (or shouldn’t be) in the business of investing in ventures to produce income – they are totally ill-equipped for that purpose. Imagine calling up the Council and saying I have a few million to invest – what is your best offer? Nah.

The Council should sell all the shares and reduce debt.

    Exactly Rodney! In my opinion, Brown is taking a sensible and pragmatic approach. If he wasn’t taking the blowtorch to wasteful spending, pointless virtue-signaling and incompetent/inefficient middle management, and simply wanted to keep selling assets to paper over the cracks, that would be quite different.
    
    However, he’s advocating selling the shares to bridge a one-off (and hopefully final) hole in the budget, and limit rates rises to 7.7%, around the same as inflation. For some Councillors allege it’s like “selling the car to buy petrol” is glib and disingenuous, and they should be ashamed. It’s like some of them are financially illiterate dip-shits or something.

      As I have posted here several times over the past 44 years rates on the house my wife and I purchased in 1979 have increased 400% of the rate of inflation and wages and salaries. That is we pay FOUR times what we would if the rates had matched inflation and wages and salaries. In that time the population has grown significantly meaning Councils have had an every increasing rate base. I say the reason is that over the past 44 years Councils have pissed rates up against the wall like drunken sailors.
      Rather than stick to the basics they have wasted Billions on vanity projects competed against their own ratepayer businesses and lacked any fiscal discipline. Until we get a Mayor Council CEO and senior executives with the capacity capability and will to govern and manage in a responsible manner the problem will continue.

    Most of the problem comes from the bread and butter business of councils (pot holes and pipes) being far too boring.
    
    So instead of staying in their lane we end up with all sorts of extra spending on vanity projects and less emphasis on the basics.

  That airport is indeed strategic and it needs to be under public control. It was stupid to let go of 100% control.
  It’s become a monopolistic toll gate where it can extort users. (Acknowledging councils do that as well sadly)
  Analysing the financial return etc is the wrong analysis. It’s a facility, not an investment. While it must be run well, no return is needed or relevant.

    So it’s strategic because it’s a monopoly and a monopoly should therefore be public – sort of like Transpower.
    
    Of course Transpower is a natural monopoly – nobody is ever going to build even one competing network of transmission lines.
    
    But an airport isn’t, even though it may look like one because nobody’s going to build a duplicate right beside it.
    
    But the same could be said for Ports of Auckland, and they’re getting their backsides kicked by Tauranga. Same with the airport: Just two hours drive down the Waikato Expressway is an airport sitting in the middle of vast amounts of flat land.
    
    Sure, the tipping point where Auckland Airport’s “extortion” would finally convince Hamilton Airport to build more and longer runways and contract with airlines for landing rights, is unknown. But it’s unknown to all parties. Once you hit it there’s no going back to your beloved monopoly. You’re now in permanent competition.
    
    The idea that a public monopoly is a sure money make forever is crap and has been proven so in countless situations even here in NZ.
    
    It’s a moot point anyway since the Council is not going to borrow $9.8 billion to buy it all back – which is where the argument of “facility” vs “investment” is going to break down. Whatever you call it, money is needed and if the ROI on that doesn’t add up the gap would have to be made up elsewhere – from ratepayers.

    It already is under public ownership (it should never be under public “control”) and in fact my wife and I own shares in Auckland Airport, as anyone else with some cash can.
    
    Local or central government don’t need to be involved in any way with the ownership or management of Auckland Airport.

    We had to put up with this nonsense when the Key government sold 49 percent of the government owned power companies. There was even a challenge in the courts that it breached the Treaty.

      Both Labour and Green sabotaged the partial asset sales by promising they’d nationalise these assets as soon as they got power again.
      
      Well they didn’t.
      
      All they ended up with was sabotaging the partial asset sales taking a few billion out of the country’s coffers. That could have been a few hospitals or schools.

  Wellington Council is in a mess because they own a stake in Wellington Airport. The current Mayor thinks airplanes are evil and is opposed to the Airport expanding to cater for future growth in traffic. Because she imagines the climate crisis will stop that growth.
  
  BTW despite the wails about the climate crisis, the consensus forecast is that flights will double between now and 2040. Airlines are forecast to spend more than 1,000 billion dollars on planes.
  
  If you have a smart child who does not know what to do on leaving school, suggest flight school.

    Even though flights are increasing, the number of pilots is not doing so at the same rate. As automation increases, there is more pressure to reduce the size of flight crews.
    
    It is also a highly internationalised industry. Expect a lot of competition from elsewhere.

      The pilot shortage is becoming worse to the point of critical.

  “Strategic asset” is quite a hackneyed political term going back many decades. I’m sure Muldoon used it often. Winston Peters, a Muldoon disciple, is a big fan.
  
  When unravelled it means a resource or infrastructure the government must own to prevent the wicked folks from holding the regular folks to ransom. The wicked folks, of course, don’t include politicians who are operating from the purest of motives.
  
  Funny how all the privately-owned assets not protected by state-granted monopoly power are the ones we rely on most to feed, clothe, transport us, and otherwise allow a modicum of comfort and safety in our lives.
  
  As soon as the state gets its hands on an asset it turns into a liability.
  
  Auckland Council doesn’t even own that much airport stock and some still stupidly claim it’s a “strategic” holding. What it is is an unconscionable holding when ratepayers are facing the double whammy of rates increases and cuts to services.

  As the ex Nat minister stated in that council ( Maurice Williamson ) from what I heard on the news, he stated it’s a strategic asset to the country, and to the community, but it’s not a strategic asset to the council, and he is right.

IRD already has a set of rules. Am I the only one to think the unions aka Labour want more rules to discourage self employment and self reliance? Why would that be, I wonder.

One of ours, a young tradie on wages, is currently working for a medium sized firm moving to transition employees to self employed. Can’t blame them actually. Seriously simpler to offer work and if accepted pay an invoice on completion. Is there anything wrong with this picture?

Our own small tradie firm has no employees any more, just owners and project related input as needed, mostly from other small firms and mostly experts. If there are issues they don’t get engaged again. Instant performance management! Actually doesn’t happen often, most we have a multi year, even multi decades, relationship with. They set their rates to cover their own costs. Like I say, simples.

  Currently it is $5 for every SIX months since one prescription covers six months supply of contraceptives (three months for ordinary medicines). Also the $5 fee is currently capped at $100 per year and there is no charge for repeats (in cases where only 30 days supply can be dispensed at a time).
  In my opinion what Chris Luxon should do is to reinstate the $5 charge but exempt Community Services Card holders. What Grant Robertson has done is provide an effective subsidy to the rich.

      Having not heard that interview I would call bs on the whole nighthood thing. Most normal people would read that as ‘The crown offered a knighthood’ or ‘The PM was going to recommend me for a knighthood’ and I declined.
      
      I think in Winston, my answer never said what you think you heard, that he probably refers to JA (or some other desperate poly) saying ‘help me form a government and you might get a knighthood (wink, wink)’. Thats a totally different thing and one would only have the word of Winston Peters to back that assertion.

        “Immigration’s always got to be linked to our economic agenda and our economic agenda says we need people. I mean, here’s the deal, essentially New Zealand stopped replacing itself in 2016. I encourage all of you to go out there, have more babies if you wish, that would be helpful.”
        
        If its a joke, please point out the funny part. In fact its quite a pertinent and factually correct observation. (fertility rate in NZ is 1.6 when 2.1 is necessary for replacement) That is why they should have defended it instead of floating the weak and submissive “joke” smokescreen.
        
        The reality is there was no joke, but the Nats, (Willis) decided to run with this because they’re panic stricken at the thought they may be wedged by Labour’s pathetically ignorant attempts to portray Luxon as a religious right looney.
        
        They apparently don’t have the intellectual resources or courage to combat this cowardly and untrue smear with simple truth.
        
        When is National going to show some fight back against an obviously politically corrupted media? If the Nats refuse to engage in this fight, they might as well just fold their tents and ride off. Let the media elect Labour as they so plainly wish to.

  This article speaks of “almost 7,000 hate-driven crimes recorded since January 2022”. That’s a big number, but it seems a crime is recorded as hate-driven if a police officer, victim or witness thinks it is.
  So, I thought I’d find out how many crimes were recorded in NZ last year. They must be recorded on a computer, so you should be able to get them monthly right? Silly me.
  The Police Minister did admit that retail crime averaged 292 incidents a day in 2022, so that is 106,580 for the year.
  
  Which puts the under 7000 “hate crimes” in perspective. Especially when you consider that retail crime is only one category of crime.

      No, Local, it’s 7000 “hate-driven” crimes from January 2022 to whenever the Guardian got the numbers – so probably 15 – 16 months. That’s well under 500 a month.
      And my comparison figure is only retail crime – shop theft – which works out to under 9000 per month of those alone. Without considering other kinds of crime, like fraud, or stealing cars or from houses or non-retail businesses or any form of violent crime. Add all those in and I think the 7000 will look even smaller.
      
      That may make it correct. I think a pretty small number of people commit a lot of the crime, and they may well hate those they perceive as doing better than them in New Zealand, which is likely to include anybody with a job or business.
      
      I’m not sure whether it shows that their crime is motivated by their racial or religious hate, or whether they just express that during commission of the crime or when they get apprehended. They might well attribute their crime to their hate, if they think their hate justifies their crimes.

        Because if the motivation is hate, then the target would be the aim in itself – not stealing a handbag or shoplifting or ram raiding or such material gain.
        It is simply a wet dream for journalists fixated on identity politics and troughers like Meng Foon.
        
        In the real world – crime happens because criminals prey on targets that are available. I don’t believe for a second that the criminal act itself is driven by any politics or ideology, other than many of them are probably awful human beings.

    What a knob Tamatha Paul, my childhood saw everyone of our society living in such housing, only almost all saw the benefits of fresh air, cleanliness, and basic house keeping to make the very best of what was on offer.
    No insulation, draughts under every door, minimal floor coverings, not even lectricity, fortunately fuel for the one car readily available.
    No puffer jackets, a child with shoes -one pair often hand me downs, get a grip you idiot.

  National will have to reverse Labour Party policies. I agree with that and that’s why I am seriously considering voting Act for the first time ever come this election.
  
  We cannot have a centre-right government that just tries to run the country as Labour has left it albeit with lower marginal tax rates. We need radical reform. Her defense rests on ‘We talked multiple times about wanting to release the figures with our new policy, but that was just a hope. Yes, he’s 100% correct about babygate. He’d be even more correct if he pointed out that it is the wrong people doing what little breeding is happening (ie. generally tax consumers rather than tax payers).

Interesting that for all the reporting about Labour indiscretions, no-one is acknowledging the benefits Luxon brings with his managerial experience.
Many of Labours problems, are the result of their promotion of diversity over other candidates who may have had more ability.
The greater the diversity, the great managerial skill needed.
Labour has shown the dangers of being in government without strong management at the top.

    I learned “up the boohai” as a pre-schooler, so it’s been around a LOOOOONG time. I often wondered about the origin. One theory I read was that “boohai” is a corruption of Puhoi (that little dot north of Auckland which produces the best yoghurt in the world). Don’t know whether it’s true, though.       I read a list of Indian names once in a glossary. A number of which were in my father’s vocab in the 1950s.
      eg ‘dekko’ for ‘look’. Chai obviously and others.
      Seemed to be names that came with the colonists and the India connection of that time.
      Maybe “Boohai” was one of those. Seemed to mean the “back of beyond”

  An excellent article. Logic says, and most countries do this that the next MAJOR town on the route must always be included, then the next town of significance, up to at most 3 towns. With distances! They should also be in order, with the closest at the top and the major town in a larger font.
  The one I “love” is heading along SH16 going east and looking for the North Shore off ramp. It gives Whangarei as the destination, but this is 160km north of the turn off. What about all the other towns in between? What about a tourist looking for Albany or Silverdale, etc.

    Anyone should be allowed to wear a stab proof (or bullet proof) vest/helmet/whatever without having to justify themselves.
    
    A stab proof vest is not a weapon. It can’t hurt anyone. There should be no debate about this.

Don Brash, on the housing market:

In American cities which have not tried to limit urban sprawl, median house prices are three or four times the median household income in those cities, making house prices “affordable”. In Auckland, the median house price reached eleven times the median household income in 2021 and is not much lower even now. In Tauranga, the median house price is close to twelve times the median household income. So in both cities – and in Wellington and other cities – houses are wildly unaffordable.

And it isn’t the houses themselves which are ridiculously over-priced, it is the land on which they sit, often tiny sections of 300 square metres or less. The Property Editor of the Herald has noted that the relatively small houses/apartments built by Williams Corporation in Auckland averaged just $180,000 in 2021; the larger houses built by GJ Gardner averaged $350,000. The reason why “house prices” average around $1 million is simply that the land the houses sit on is absurdly over-priced, all because of a silly fixation about “urban sprawl”. The one thing that New Zealand is not short of is land, and tightly restricting its availability for housing development means that a substantial proportion of the population has not a hope in hell of ever owning the roof over their heads.

    But when land exists in abundance, only artificially restricted by a corrupt ideology, and when the cost of land is 60-70% of the property price, well, it’s pretty obvious which problem needs to be fixed first.

For those with an interest in golf, the recent truce and joining of the PGA and the Saudi funded LIV will hopefully stop the bitter acrimony and allow the game to move forward.

According to the Babylon Bee, there are going to be a few golf rule changes pushed by the Saudis as part of the deal.

1) Players who hit an errant shot must yell “ALLAHU AKBAR!” instead of “FORE!”: We’re pretty sure fans will pay a little more attention when someone starts screaming this.

The cooling pond at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is in danger of collapse as a result of the destruction of the Kakhovka dam and the draining of its reservoir, according to a French nuclear safety organisation.

Without the reservoir on the other side to counteract it, the internal pressure of the water in the cooling pool could breach the dyke around it, a report by the Paris-based Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) said.

The loss of the pool would not necessarily be catastrophic as other sources of water could be brought in, such as pumping trucks, to prevent a meltdown of the plant’s nuclear fuel, but a loss of the cooling pool would dramatically increase safety concerns at the plant.

Plunkett’s platform has some good moments, but his point blank refusal to acknowledge the problems and abuses of the last few years is something to behold. His nastiness towards what he calls “bloody anti vaxxers” is astonishing.

Guy Hatchard does an extended blog post on the subject.

The World Health Organisation has announced an agreement with the European Union to develop a digital health certificate. WHO has stated that they will use the “EU Digital COVID Certificate” as a model to establish a global digital health certificate otherwise known as a vaccine passport (you can follow the reaction on Twitter here).

Worryingly, the head of Auckland Grammar sounds as though he is intent on supporting this push, has he not heard that the covid vaccines are dangerous to young males in particular?

Tim O’Connor has written on 1st June to parents and friends of the School and spoken to the student body saying:

“It is our intention for all teaching and extracurricular programmes to be in person, with appropriate health and safety procedures in place”. Warning students that “personal health can affect their ability to attend and/or to actively participate in School activities”.

He announced that AGS has received advice from Public Health and medical professionals about the need for pupils to receive MMR shots and influenza vaccines. Mask wearing is also advised.

The sad thing is, many people still think Ardern was ‘amazing’ and that she saved 80,000 lives. This school policy will do nothing but cause even more division in society. The ‘filthy unvaxxed’ will be yet again excluded from society.

This is Ardern’s legacy, and it isn’t a a stretch to compare it to Nazi Germany in 1934, because it’s almost exactly the same. She laid the groundwork for the implementation of a fascist state, that work continues by people like the head of Auckland Grammar enabling divisive policies.

People keep wanting to ‘move on’ from covid. How is that possible when one of our top schools is endorsing medical apartheid? When none of our politicians will even admit there might have been some problems? When our MoH continues to push vaccines that don’t work?

Where are we heading as a country?

Brian telling lies again, who would have guessed

The Warehouse has clapped back at self-styled Apostle Brian Tamaki, who claimed the chain was selling puberty blockers, telling him to stop spreading disinformation.

In a video posted on Twitter, Tamaki tells a service: “The transgender agenda must be stopped. We will legislate against the whole gay pride movement.”

  When the restaurant owner called 111 she was told to phone back later because they were changing shifts.
  
  Seriously? Someone’s life is being threatened and 111 can’t do anything because they’re changing shifts???
  
  This is a serious dereliction of duty on the part of the police. The agreement we have with them is that they have the monopoly on violence in society and they respond to call outs. Now. Not tomorrow. Not when they’ve finished their donut. Now.
  
  One thing about keeping a shottie behind the door. It doesn’t change shifts!

No surprise

Māori with spiritual ties to Mount Ruapehu are not ruling out a high court injunction that would stop a controversial plan for the future of the mountain.

On Monday, Cabinet is expected to decide on a proposal from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE) regional development unit Kānoa to have two entities take on the running of the mountain’s two ski fields.
