If you are the legal owner of something which carries a potential financial benefit, whether or not you are actually using it, then you have every right to proper compensation if Government action takes it away from you.         Evidence it was visited by Maori? Indications of ancient food gardens, canoe anchor stones, and a piece of volcanic glass from the Bay of Plenty are cited.
        
        How archaeologists dated the glass being left 700 years ago in the Kermadecs, and how they placed its origin, would be interesting.
        
        If Maori did at times live in the Kermadecs, their claim is more credible than the Maori stake in the wireless frequency medium. That’s perhaps the world’s most outrageous indigenous claim.

    The extent of cultural extortion is amazing but not surprising. I see that the University of Otago which is head deep in financial crap has decided to become a “treaty led organisation” and as part of this has commissioned some sort of East Polynesian pole which has been placed in a prominent position on the campus. BUT, its been wrapped and the whole shebang surrounded by covers. The Otago Daily Times has asked how much it cost and when was it going to be unveiled. The ODT has been told that their questions were vexatious and culturally insensitive.
    
    At the same time, the University has been willing to spend millions on rebranding to demonstrate this cultural crap – remember that science is not really science unless it considers East Polynesian science.
    
    And, at the same time the University is asking the Liemore Pardy for more money. I’m sure they will get it as long as the money comes at the same time as the grand unveiling of this pole and the new logo – all accompanied by the appropriate wailing.

      I suspect because they’d done nothing to prepare for coming into government in 2017 deep down they knew that their policies were likely to fail, and as a caucus decided that their “insurance policy” was to remove all targets so they could blag their way out of trouble when they eventually did fail.   If you buy a Tesla with your own money, you do not have to take the rebate if you object to it. So he is left buying an ICE vehicle and having to pay the pollution tax. Given how I feel about how the government spends my taxes, I would be reluctant to do this either.

    Apparently, but they tried to suggest the whole car was tax payer funded, not just that he would have received an automatic subsidy I think when you order a new Tesla the subsidy is automatically calculated with the price, but when the car turns up, you would have to say nope, I am paying more, it would be a bit silly to bugger about with that, so maybe tgd reason he cancelled it

  What was the source for this story? The media asked Luxon’s office to comment on what they already knew – that Parliamentary Services had offered him a Tesla, which he had accepted (he only cancelled it after the media started asking about it). How did they know this? Did a partisan employee of Parliamentary Services leak the information to the media? This would be a very serious matter, and there should be a leak inquiry.     Opie, what is actually going on is that former President Trump has been charged, has appeared in Court and pled not guilty. One day there’ll presumably be a trial and eventually a verdict. Possibly followed by appeals.
    
    If you really want to, you can watch footage of his plane landing (looks like every other plane landing you’ve ever seen) and listen to people who are not lawyers for either side, or the judge, speculate.
    
    Alternatively, there are lots of cute animal videos to waste your time on.

        WRT the Trump fiasco prosecution, my lawyer friend in Illinois has this further comment:
        ” The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America.
        Article II, Section One, Constitution of the United States of America
        Under Article Two of the Constitution, the President has all the powers of the Executive Branch. That is why he can declassify documents at will. By definition any restrictions regarding Executive branch documents do not bind him. Any laws seeking to bind his handling of such documents are, ab initio, unconstitutional attempts to restrict his Article Two powers. No Executive Order can bind him, as Executive Orders are purely the creation of a president and no Executive Order of a president can bind his successors when it comes to documents or anything else. Besides the blatant partisan nature of the Trump prosecution, it is an attempt to make the agencies of the Executive branch superior to the President. It stands our constitutional order on its head. It is an attempted coup and the idiots currently controlling the Executive Branch are too blind in their Orange Man Bad mania to comprehend it.”

Intetesting to see schools up and down the country celebrating PRIDE week. Wanaka’s Mt Aspiring College, Form 1-7, is probably a typical example with colouring-in the Drag Queen competitions, Pride Speech competitions, PRIDE mufti day and a PRIDE parade. The school’s walls are adorned with colourful rainbow posters encouraging the pupils to love whomsoever they want to. Perhaps not the best message to be promoting when so much publicity has lately been given to court cases involving inappropriate student/ teacher relationships.

She considers diversion to be an outright miscarriage of justice, that a conviction and the naming of her assailant ought to be the absolute minimum outcome.

However the MSM seems to have little interest in the unaccounted-for millions of $$$$$ that have disappeared into the PGF (Provincial Growth Fund) blackhole.

  Well, there was nothing ‘essential’ about large proportions of the PGF projects. They were, almost by definition, discretionary. They were ‘nice to haves’ at best.
  
  And now we learn that basic controls were not in place to assess their effectiveness and benefits.
  
  This money is all from the pockets of New Zealand families, from our children’s mouths, either today or in the future through loan repayments.
  
  That many New Zealanders find nothing wrong with this just shows how little we demand or expect from our politicians. We let them get away with far, far too much.
  
  Years ago many here on KB confidently predicted that the PGF would be a rort, existing purely as a NZ First re-election war chest and one that will never return the benefits claimed.

    I call bullshit that there even is a language called Te Reo Maori.
    
    When I was in hospital in 2020, there was a Maori language teacher there (had been teaching for many years). He had recently moved to Chch from somewhere on North Island. He said he couldn’t understand Chch Maori properly.
    
    So instead of heing thought of as a single language, Maori should maybe be thought of as a group of languages.
    
    This is similar to the language situation in South Africa which has 9 official African languages (11 in total with English and Afrikaans). There are some further languages like Pondo which are unofficial and are considered dialects, though are arguably sufficiently distinct from Xhosa and Zulu to be a stand alone language.
    
    I by no means know all those African languages in SA. Some are partially overlapping (like Zulu and Xhosa) and I understand those. Pondo is classified as a Xhosa dialect and I can communicated with Pondo people too. But the languages are different enough that you can get into trouble.
    
    I expect the same has happened with Maori as it has evolved over a few hundred years since it broke away from its roots.
    
    Stability suffers when a language does not have a history of being written down. Languages such as Maori are very fluid and I expect that Christchurch “Bro” of today is substantially different from 2 generations ago.
    
    It is all very well pushing for a common, one-size-fits-all Maori, but that can only happen at the cost of extinguishing local variants.

      There are approx 3000 different LANGUAGES in the world and roughly 1/3rd are spoken in New Guinea!!!! In PNG the Official languages are English, Pidgin and Police Motu.
      
      In NZ there are only two official languages, Maori and NZ Sign Language. NOT English which is the language that nearly 100% of NZers speak as either their 1st or 2nd Language and only about 4% can even hold a conversation in Maori!!!

  We (UK) need to ban knives immediately. Every month people are stabbed to death and the knife lobby argues that knives have legal purposes. We need a knife by back system, to buy back knives longer then 8inches and knife registry so the police can know who has the legal knives.
  
  We must not look at the mental state of the offenders or look at what might have caused them to commit the offence. We must not implement policy that would improve the mental health of our citizens or identify those that might commit future offences. Knives kill, not people.

    I think the problem is that they are counting non-sworn officers as front-line staff.
    
    Technically that can be true, they are “front line”. For example, if you go to report an incident at the police station, the person taking your statement and typing it in to the computer is “front line” because they are interacting with the public. They are police staff, but they are not themselves necessarily trained police and would not be “bobbies on the beat” or arresting anyone.
    
    While it might be “technically true”, it is certainly misleading. The public expectation of “1800 new police” was that these would be sworn officers in blue driving fast, arresting scrotes and dealing with crime.

Watching how the authorities and te media pardy cover the Opotiki gang shenanigans is interesting.

A death , arsons , a town acting like it’s occupied by a violent enemy , road blocks into certain areas ( conducted by the gangs) and what should be of concern to the UN , the government and NGO’s, there are reports of Internally Displaced Persons , ( like Sudan , or Syria and Somalia).

But the local police say they are in control ( where’s George Orwell when you need him) and te media pardy are obsessing , again, about the Leader of the Oppositon.

  It’s been that way for a long time, there’s a ban on gathering toheroa except if you get a certificate from your local marae saying you’re gathering them for cultural activities like eating them.
  We have far more to worry about from invasive organisms though, like caulerpa that is liable to cover much of New Zealand’s norther coastline within 20 years.

I came across this gem:

Te Puni Kōkiri recommends that where te reo Māori and English text cannot be displayed as equal then te reo Māori should be more prominent. During the consultation for Kura School signs, Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori the Māori Language Commission stated that ‘….by affording the word ‘KURA’ prominence within the sign this recognises the value of Reo Māori…’

Given that te reo Māori is used less than English throughout Aotearoa New Zealand, Waka Kotahi is of the view that it needs to be promoted if it is to achieve equality with English in New Zealand.

So what exactly is the mana of a language which 95% of the population doesn’t speak?

How is this mana measured, and by whom?

What evidence does WK (or TPK) have that equality is achievable? (And for that matter, what do they mean by ‘equality’?)

By putting English below Māori, what message is being sent about the value of English?

I started reading the consultation document willing to be persuaded that bilingual signs were no big deal, but justifications such as this remind me that most of the people I know speak as their first language neither English nor Māori and, yes, Luxon is right – we are far too inward looking.

  I’d not hear of “Te Puni Kōkiri”, so did a quick Google. Lo and behold, Te Puni Kōkiri is the Government’s principal policy advisor on Māori wellbeing and development. And they recommend that the Māori language should be given more prominence over English.

Trying to deal with the government over the phone takes longer than ever. Just tried to find out something from Waka Kotahi/NZ Transport and the expected waiting time is 15 to 20 minutes!

They’ve hired more people, the fees have increased, but the response time is getting worse!

How is this for wasting our money. A small business lost part of its roof during the recent storms. Applied for money to repair. recieved just enough to cover repairs. All fine and dandy. Then out of the blue they have recieved another payment considerably more than the original payment. It was not asked for just sent to them. Naturally they have not rejected it. How many times is this happening throughout NZ. My guess is that there is a pot of money for these weather events and the Ministry has been told to use it all. No thought of returning it to the government no our coffers. We are living in la la land.

  How about that to become a New Zealand citizen, the applicant must:
  a. Resided in NZ for at least five years,
  b. Paid tax in NZ for at least four of the five years,
  c. Claimed no benefits in NZ for at least five years,
  d. Have no criminal laid against for at least five years, and
  e. Sworn an oath of allegiance to NZ on gaining citizenship.
  I don’t see being a dual citizen as a problem so long as the other country(s) grant(s) equal rights to NZ citizens.

    Further to what Ghost said, you’re pretty much asking for the status quo.
    I became an NZ citizen (as did my wife and one kid):
    a) Yup, resided here for 5 years
    b) Paying tax is not a requirement, but it is more or less a byproduct of the requirements for getting PR (being employable etc).
    c) Ditto. See (b).
    d) Getting PR requires police checks, Getting citizenship requires further police checks.
    e) Part of the citizenship ceremony.
    
    Excluding dual citizenship is problematic for some. For example, Swiss people cannot get rid of their Swiss citizenship (because that was a loophole used to escape national service).
    
    You cannot renew PR if you do not actually live in NZ. To get, and keep, PR you have to genuinely live in NZ.

Stumbling around on the internet I came across this Ministry of Justice article. It makes a case for Maori having a different concept of justice to the bloody foreigners.

Apparently, for a thousand years Maori had developed “well established social structures” with rules and “conventions” around governance etc.

I suspect it would really be fairer to characterise it under one overarching principle: might is right. If I want something, and I have muscle and weaponry, then it is mine.

The concepts of law and order and property rights are the underpinnings of a thriving economy . That is why countries (and cultures) that lack these fail.

Why build anything of value if the local war lord is just going to take it away from you if he wants it?

If we want success in NZ then we cannot have a split justice system. We need one justice system for everyone. And it needs to be the justice system that works better. Isn’t by any means perfect, but is superior.

Re cost of living crisis:
Last evening on TV1 Seven Sharp there was an item about passport issues.
Apparently thousands of kiwis are currently planning holiday trips overseas to flee the cold winter weather.
This has caused increased pressure to obtain or renew passports.
A spokesperson for Internal Affairs, Maria Robertson, said that airlines are reporting very high demand for tickets and, at the passport issuing level, IA is receiving “40,000 to 50:000 passport applications” per month.
Even given that many passports were not renewed during the infamous lock down periods, this seems to indicate that people still have money to spend on overseas holidays.
The government is constantly claiming how poor we are and justifying huge expenditure on personal hand outs, welfare and subsidies to alleviate the “cost of living crisis”.
Perhaps time to re-direct some of that funding on to health and education where it is really needed.
Not a lot of potholes going to be filled in from the beach in Hawaii.

  From work in the electricity generation world … wind and solar are now the cheapest forms of generation.
  
  (1) When was the last coal-fired station built in NZ? We’ll not see another one of those.
  (2) When was the last hydro-electric station built in NZ? I’ll wager Clyde is the last serious one we’ll see.
  (3) When was the last gas fuelled station built in NZ? I’ll wager we’ve seen the last of them too.
  
  Wind and solar have displaced those other types of generation … because they’re cheaper to build/operate. And cheaper = a net benefit to ratepayers, taxpayers, citizens and businesses. They’re also cleaner = net benefit to the environment and the climate (noting dirtier is now a true financial cost, so it’s also a part of the cheaper equation).
  
  And yes, wind/solar **plus storage** is still cheaper than thermal or hydro.
  
  We *may* see a few more geothermal plants built here yet, but even that’s going to be increasingly difficult as the wholesale price path trends down. What we will probably see in the future is off-shore wind displacing on-shore wind.

    Nonsense. The cost of each mwh is significantly higher over the asset life of wind and solar generation infrastructure, even before factoring in the need for coal/gas/nuclear fallback.

      Well that’ll be a surprise to my client, who’s currently weighing up a large electricity generation project. The analysis considers all the capex, opex and disposal questions, and the reality is that wind/solar plus storage is the cheapest option going forward.
      
      So let me repeat the practical common sense questions … when did you last see any significant generation plant built in NZ that wasn’t geothermal or wind? Why do you think that is? Do you think the people making these big investment decisions are wing nut greens, or just rational capitalists?
      
      I will wager that we will never see another large thermal plant built here. And very likely not another big hydro dam either.

        In practical terms storage can be water in a dam (*) or a chemical battery.
        
        (* water that doesn’t need to be dispatched because the wind/solar is generating, and so that water can be stored for a later time)
        
        Fossil fuels like coal & gas combine storage & energy in the one product. So do dams, basically. But with wind/solar the storage is a separate discrete product that’s typically at a different site.
        
        And yes, the analysis is based on detailed wind/sunlight models, and detailed price paths.

Can anyone explain why languages are called French, English, Spanish, Italian, Polish etc, etc but Maori is called Te Reo. What even does Te Reo mean and if it means “the language” as I’ve been led to believe, how bloody arrogant.

      Hi Have spoken to a very good Mãori friend who is a fluent speaker. They have heard many variations so no right or wrong way. They call themselves a Te reo speaker, or a speaker of Te reo. No mention of Mãori. This probably muddy the waters more.

    One point though is that there is not really one language called Maori. There are a group of Maori languages, though they are maybe similar enough.
    
    China and India have many languages – many of which are completely incomprehensible to eachother.
    
    A Chinese couple I know (who met at school in NZ) cannot communicate properly in either of their mother tongues. They can speak to eachother in English or Mandarin. Their son though can speak all the languages fluently.

  This is pretty common and is the last thing I would lose sleep over.
  
  Te Reo means “the language”. It is supposed to be used in the context of “Te Reo Maori” (ie. the language of the Maori) or Te Reo Pahkiha (aka English) as distinct from the people Maori.
  
  Exactly the same exists in Xhosa and Zulu.
  isiZulu = the language of the Zulu
  amaZulu = Zulu people (generally the nation/tribe/football team rather than just a gaggle of Zulu people)
  
  Sometimes people writing in English will use the words isiZulu and amaZulu to draw the distinction between Zulu (the language) and Zulu (the people).
  
  Bigger fish to fry than this mate!

  I don’t call it “Te Reo” when speaking English. It seems needlessly confusing and slightly cliquey – a sort of “in group” term that excludes those who lack certain knowledge. Presumably “Te Reo” is the appropriate term when speaking Maori, but I don’t speak Maori.
  
  There are similar examples from other places. For example, in Indonesia ‘insiders’ (e.g. Indonesian locals or foreign residents) when speaking English tend to call the Indonesian language “Bahasa” (literally just ‘language’). The full term would be “Bahasa Indonesia”, but in practice that gets shortened to “Bahasa”. Foreign languages get specified in full – e.g. “Bahasa Inggris”. To be honest I find this habit a bit cringy, especially coming from foreigners.
  
  But most languages do not do this. I do not see why English suddenly has to have Maori shoehorned into it. Of course if I ever became fluent in Maori I might change my own speech habits. By fluent in Maori I mean being able to go to make small talk with the local dairy owner, not simply stand up and plough drearily through the usual ceremonial welcomes – New Zealand’s version of the Latin Mass.

  OK, but one of the problems is that many economists are theoretical people that live in a made up theoretical world that is unlike the real world.
  
  A person who has run a business (maybe crashed a few in learning) probably has a better grip on real world economics than many, if not most, economists.
  
  But then the same is true for most areas. Take for example medicine. A GP has to have a rudimentary understanding of hundreds or thousands of complains and diseases. They will master some of those and never master others. That’s what specialists are for. The average layman is likely to get a better understanding of less common diseases that they have than their GPs.
  
  For example. I have Atrial Fibrillation. First time I went into the hospital I didn’t know what was going on, so I accepted what the medics were doing. Next time around, I had learned about all the funny little quirks of Afib and I was (gently and politely) pointing out errors that the medical staff were making.
  
  Well the same applies for economists (or just about every profession). I’m a software engineer dealing with very specific types of software. I’d never trust a general purpose software engineer (eg. a website designer) anywhere near what I do. And the reverse applies too – just because I am a software engineer with decades of experience doesn’t mean I should be trying to fix up people’s websites.

With Radio NZ in a twist about alleged pro-Russian doctoring of its coverage of the Russia-Ukraine war, a historian’s video just posted on Youtube is pertinent.

The British military historian, Mark Felton, tells of 8,000 veterans of an SS Division of Ukrainians secretly settled in Britain after World War 2.

What Felton doesn’t go into is the pre-World War 2 “Holodomor”, Stalin’s starvation of rural regions in 1932 and 1933 that led to five million deaths, chiefly in Ukraine but also in Russia. Ukraine was itching for independence when Germany invaded the Soviet Union. A Ukrainian SS division was formed, but Felton says a Ukrainian nationalist stipulation was that it not fight against the Western allies.

The Ukrainians re-settled in Britain and later, Canada, escaped the fate of tens of thousands of German-allied Cossacks who were handed over by the Western allies to the Soviet Union after the war. Most were summarily executed or sent to the Gulag. Many of the Cossacks and their families had been held in British prisoner camps in Italy

Felton gained his PhD at the University of Essex, and lectured there in history before spending nearly a decade teaching in Shanghai, latterly at Fudan University. He launched his YouTube history videos in 2017.
