    I travelled through Eastern Europe before the wall came down. It was utterly soul destroying. Misery, fear, poverty, environmental disasters – it was hard to grasp how badly the people were treated.
    
    Seeing communism and socialism up close makes me so angry now when pea-brained academics, unionists and others advocate for us to follow such evil.

      I will never forget going to a Skopje supermarket in the late 1980s. Row after row of empty shelves, and then one entire row filled with canned beans. 1000s of cans, and nothing else. And I didn’t have a can opener!

        I visited Skopje in the early 1980’s and it was great compared with some Bulgarian cities at that time. Bulgaria was so backward it was hard to fathom. Guess that was the fruits of communism!

        Never got to Bulgaria. I employed a software engineer from there. Brilliant chap, and he had some horror stories of ‘normal’ life. As shitty as New Zealand is (or appears to be becoming) those Eastern Bloc survivors know the truth about socialism.

      same here. Did Poland in 73 and Romania in 81. Dire indeed. People were friendly enough but scared of secret police. 1 in 3 citizens were informers! Nothing in shops unless you had foreign currency and it was a crime for locals to have foreign currency?? Socialism only works for those at the top.

        I was lucky, I did Russia (3x, including a Siberian oil town in the 1990s), Prague x 2, Hungary, and East Berlin all post the fall of the wall.
        
        Russia, was and still is a basket case. Siberia was depressing. St Petersburg was in desperate need of money. Moscow was corrupt. Keeping you nose clean was important.
        
        Prague was beautiful, but outside the tourist traps, not so nice. Hungary was the same.
        
        Berlin & East Germany, referred to by my colleagues as Dark or Black Germany. Because after reunification, it was a bottomless pit for funds to rebuild & make the states of the DDR equivalent to the states of the old GDR.

It is a sad indictment on our younger generation when they can’t go to watch a rugby final knowing or thinking they would be safe only to find out that it is and was not the case after being attacked and bullied into giving their phones and passwords to machete weilding criminals .
How low can this Government get with their soft on crime policies and the amount of crime that is being committed in New Zealand with no consequences.

  Speaking of which the media pardy have done a number of PR jobs for Plod HQ about the register .
  
  They were going on about how the police had busted a few cases of “straw buyers” . Well done ; but they did that without the benefit of the register .
  
  Now they’re saying with the register the straw buyer will stop , but could now resort to renting his guns to criminals ,again what benefit the register ?
  
  So the register will now create a gun rental scheme ( which the police admit to) and unless the criminal is caught in possession no one will know whether the gun used was registered or not ! Meanwhile between “jobs” the guns will remain very secure in safes .
  
  What’s needed is better police vetting of licencees and proper sentencing for serious crime .
  
  Could it be any simpler ?

Is there anyway we can find its name and so protect ourselves and future workers from a family with such clout?

  What happened to that teacher would not have required powerful parents. Not these days. The parents may have complained to the Principal. Then the whole transgender fuelled disciplinary processes would have kicked in. Would not have mattered a damn who the parents are. The maths teacher was doomed. 😕

      Just to add. He deserved to be screwed over after what he said. He went too far.
      Sure he was probably provoked and goaded but instead of responding he should have walked away and used their words against them.
      The process is there for him too.
      Alinsky Rules- Make them play by their own Rules.
      He had a perfect chance to highlight the bullying by the transgender student and Principal over compelled speech but lost that Moral High Ground when he showed himself to be just as mental.

The research method is not identified but the example given is that they are more likely to be photographed by the Police. You might think that that is because they’re suspected of committing a crime. Rather than revealing a bunch of sadists in the Police, doesn’t it demonstrate why ACT’s policy of doing away with, inter alia, the HRC is eminently sensible?     As I stated previously the problem didn’t exist in my school attendence.
    Surname, no pronouns, the teacher was in charge and parents largely accepted their decisions.
    The questions would seem to be –
    1. Has there been an official change of sex notification to the school.
    2. Has there been any medical procedure.
    The whole problem is exacerbated by the loose legislation and approach to the gender issue.

      On (1) – its the other way around. Under the Privacy Act, the school is prohibited from advising the gender of a child to the parents. So if a girl tells the school “I an a trans boy”, the school cannot disclose that information to parents.

      As of a few weeks ago you can just change your legal gender by filling out a form. Russia apparently lost 39 pilots and aircrew in helicopter attacks on the Wagner column, after they had, in less than 24 hours, captured the military bases in Rostov and got to within 200km of Moscow. And defence minister Sergei Shoigu and chief of the army staff general Valery Gerasmivov haven’t been seen since Prigozhin agreed to turn around.

        My bottom line is these issues should be resolved peacefully , civilians should never suffer for politician’s egos or power trips,
        
        The int’l community , EU , UN whoever should get involved early to head off war , destruction etc Ideally had a referendum in those areas to divide the land between the language groups , do population swaps etc
        But bottom line is Putin escalated a relatively small border war into what could potentially be WWIII and what is definetilely an infintiely worse situation than it was prior .
        
        And for the record , I always felt the west needed to give Russia room and help if needed to develop into a civil society .
        
        That clearly was never going to happen with all the kleptocrats in charge there and yes elements in Ukr may be little better , but Putin’s “solution” is not the way we should go about our business.

        My take on it is that Putin had no option after years of deceit and disregard for treaties signed (guaranteed by Nato countries but subsequently admitted they had no intention of sticking to them) and aggressive advancement of NATO eastwards. Killing of Russian-speaking people was his last straw. The US military/industrial complex have been wanting this war for decades. I think he’s the good guy here and the US not.

    Wagner also run every off shore Russian Base. Its estimated they control vast areas in Libya for instance.
    Putin cant afford mutiny in all those places.
    Does Belarus now have its own private army?

    Wagner has some formidable mobile anti-aircraft vehicle systems (the sort of stuff the Govt should be buying the NZ Army so they are not sitting ducks) and apparently shot down both helicopters and either a transport or electronic warfare (jammer) aircraft.

I spent a weekend in Wellington at the National Party conference. There were around 600 attendees, from every electorate from Northland to Southland. Right around the country, candidates are picking up a mood for change.

Chris Luxon gave an excellent speech yesterday with his Law and Order announcements well received. Among the highlights were Nicola Willis’ thorough explanation of National’s economic policies on Saturday, and a presentation on health yesterday by Dr Shane Reti and Matt Doocey. Reti made one of the comments of the weekend, saying that under National, Covid will no longer be an acceptable excuse for failures in health.

National is in great heart. I met a number of the new candidates from around the country and they are a great bunch, working their butts off campaigning. The Whanganui electorate team was also delighted to be acknowledged for our percentage increase in membership, much of which has happened in the last four months since Carl Bates was confirmed as our candidate.

Caucus is united behind Chris Luxon and Nicola Willis, both of whom gave outstanding speeches over the weekend. No one is underestimating what a fight it will be to wrest power away from Labour, but National is ready, willing and able. Advance voting opens in 99 days; bring it on!

      If you are 77 you must have been born in either 1945 or 1946. At that time we had a Labour Government that had been in office for 10 years and had already won 3 elections. They then won a fourth consecutive time in 1946.

        That is why Nat policy is different, not so sure about the grass aspect, but the GM grasses, the stock bugs that will reduce emissions, planting of trees back to 2000 plus riparian planting in nonproductive parts of a farm will make sheep and beef farmers carbon neutral and as i said before, some farms are now accredited as carbon neutral, not so sure about dairy farmers though.

    Our health system in 2017 was phenominal compared to today. I had 4 plastic surgery operations on facial skin cancer from 2017 to 2019. Have been waiting since then for the finishing op, but was advised late last year that I have been discharged, so am left with a left eye that has a damaged tear duct and a lower ectropian (sagging eyelid) which weeps all the time, and I have had to tape it up for 4 years to reduce weeping & eliminate eye strain. Am presently haselling to get it sorted. Have had 2 meeting with 2 public hospital surgeons, & one with a private surgeon which will be funded. No decision as yet from any 3 of them.
    Go into high gear next week if I haven’t heard from an of them.

  The headline is very misleading. It says:
  
  Two Auckland Suburbs Rugby Club players suffer critical, life-threatening injuries in consecutive weeks
  
  From reading the article, there was no actual physical injury. They collapsed. Two of them had brain blood clots removed. No information on the other two.
  Of course, asking about vaccination status and checking for any involvement would be totally inappropriate……anything else will be investigated thoroughly. Full transparency and all that.

        It’s critical infrastructure. Without it we are dependent on external suppliers and it’s looking concerningly as if the quality isn’t up to scratch.
        This has massive implications for our economy.
        
        As for it not being economic to refine it here, since when has economics been a concern of the current government?
        We’re not talking about ideological fantasy like cycle lanes and EVs. We’re an island nation at the arse end of the planet and we need to move products in and out to survive. For the foreseeable future, this is going to be done with fossil fuels. It would be good if it was a good quality product, as it was when it was done at Marsden Point.

      I am aware of the recent research that illustrates that methane has much less global warming potential than is built into the current UN accounting rules.
      
      I am also aware that it would take a decade, at least, to get those rules changed, rules which New Zealand was instrumental in developing.
      
      Therefore New Zealand’s obligations include methane using the current accounting rules.
      
      Chris Luxon has pledged ‘net zero’ knowing those accounting rules.
      
      He has also just taken agriculture off the table.

For anyone who didn’t know what the fuss around Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine was all about. Here’s the Joe Rogan interview with RFK Jr. on the topic.

Ivermectin is often recognized – 2nd to penicillin – for having the greatest impact on human health. And its discovery won the Nobel Prize in 2015.

But its existence threatened a $200 billion vaccine enterprise.

“The Federal Emergency Use Authorization Statute says that you cannot issue an emergency use authorization to a vaccine if there is an existing medication that has been approved for any purpose that is demonstrated effective against the target illness,” explained Kennedy.

“So they had to destroy ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine and discredit it. And they had to tell everybody it’s not effective. Because if they had acknowledged that it’s effective in anybody, the whole $200 billion vaccine enterprise would have collapsed.”

That’s it in a nutshell. It is a cheap, off label, effective treatment for very many things, but it threatened the whole covid vaccine industry.

    Rogan had no idea prior to vaccine rollout. Rogan became aware of it at the same time as the vast majority of people who were looking at alternative sources because they knew the covid narrative was fraudulent.
    
    He caught covid and spoke on his podcast about the treatments he had taken and the excellent recovery process.
    As with anyone else speaking out about it, the media attempted to ridicule him and anyone else taking it or advocating it as a treatment. They went to the extent of putting a filter on one of his videos to make him look grey and sick.

While flicking through a cafe copy of the Post over the weekend, I noticed an extraordinary article about Tory Whanau. The gist of it was that she never realised that Council spending is locked in via the Annual Plan & the Long Term Plan, and therefore she’d be unable to deliver on her campaign promises until at least a second term (bad news, chums, she’s intending three).

I’ll give her one point for honesty. Perhaps, being a neophyte Mayor with no Councillor time behind her, it might be forgivable – though you have to wonder where the hard hitting MSM investigative journalism was before the election. But, it’s shocking that someone who was Chief of Staff for the Green Party has no idea how public sector financial planning operates.

In more from the WCC stuff-up file, this morning’s local rag reports that the Golden Mile ‘revamp’ (removal of cars) cost estimate has rocketed from$78m in 2020 to $140m – before a shovel has been turned.

A block of Councillors is belatedly questioning this and the wider $7B+ Let’s Get Wellington Moving (the epitome of a Goebbels lie) expenditure. Though I note that it’s proposed only to defer a decision so LGWM can come up with a new plan (more consultants).

At what point do we simply chuck the whole thing out & continue with what we have?

Sweden just dumped Wind and Solar and are going for Nuclear.
‘Sweden’s parliament on Tuesday (20 June) adopted a new energy target, giving the …government the green light to push forward with plans to build new nuclear plants in a country that voted 40 years ago to phase out atomic power.

Changing the target to “100% fossil-free” electricity, from “100% renewable” is key to the government’s plan to meet an expected doubling of electricity demand to around 300 TwH by 2040 and reach net zero emissions by 2045.

“This creates the conditions for nuclear power,” Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson said in parliament. “We need more electricity production, we need clean electricity and we need a stable energy system.”
‘Sweden’s parties agreed a deal in 2016 that new reactors could be built at existing sites.’
‘State-owned utility Vattenfall is looking at building at least two small modular reactors and at extending the life of the country’s existing reactors.’

Tauranga has been rear-ended by both National and Labour governments when it comes to roading infrastructure.

Not only does the government reap in tons of extra tax revenue from a higher population Tauranga, they don’t feel the need to put up the expenditure to expand infrastructure or services such as healthcare.

Even worse, they tell the people of Tauranga they have to have their roads tolled if they want them, which is why Tauranga is the highest tolled city in the nation, by far.

As for the traffic, my daughter drove to a school event several weeks back, took her nearly 2 hours to get from our house to the event (10km perhaps). 2 hours is uncommon but 1 hour to travel just a few km is not that uncommon these days.

What is my Ethnicity? And is the Health system racist? And how do they collect our data?

The Waitemata District Health Board patient registration form says:

“What is your Ethnic Group?”
Pick a maximum of 3.
The choices are: “NZ European, Maori, Samoan, Cook Island Maori, Indian, Niuean, Chinese, Korean, Tongan, and if your ethnic group is not in the list above please state……”

* Why are Samoan and Korean and Tongan listed as seperate ethniciticies? But Europeans are generalised as anyone from the entire continent plus Britain presumably.
* Why do they say NZ European but not NZ Samoan?
* Are the British European? They brexited and are on their own islands? Why aren’t British given their own Ethnicity in NZ stats when they signed the NZ Treaty not the EU?
* What if you came from America and you are white, are you NZ European. What if you are a black american who moves to NZ are you african or American. Is American an ethnicity.
* Why are Tongans using our racist colonised health system when their own country wasn’t colonised.

What actually is Ethnicity? And am I NZ European? Am I pakeha? Am I just a NZer?

According to Stats NZ: “Ethnicity is a measure of cultural affiliation. It is not a measure of race, ancestry, nationality, or citizenship. Ethnicity is self perceived and people can belong to more than one ethnic group.”

An ethnic group is made up of people who have some or all of the following characteristics:

* a common proper name
* one or more elements of common culture, for example religion, customs, or language
* unique community of interests, feelings, and actions
a shared sense of common origins or ancestry, and
a common geographic origin.”

**Is NZ European a recognised proper common name? I don’t think so. New Zealander is the proper common name. Do NZers “self perceive” as NZ European.
** An ethnicity shares elements of common culture and language. – Europe doesn’t share a common languages , they have many languages and different cultures and religions, and I don’t speak any of them. I speak English. But then so do most Maori NZers.
**Ethnicity has A shared sense of common origins or ancestry – well how far back. For the last 4-5 generations I’m from NZ. Don’t hold a European passport and don’t speak french. Don’t have any relationship with Europe. Don’t have any relatives that live in Europe or Britain. They are all from NZ.
**A common geographic origin – well that would be NZ. Same as most Maori NZers .
** Why are they collecting special data on Samoans but not NZ British. Why aren’t Samoans called NZ Samoan.

So what Ethnicity am I . Why are we being called NZ Europeans. Is that how you identify? Why is the whole of Europe smushed together as if the ethnicity of Sweden is the same as a Spaniard. But the ethnicity of Maori is different to Samoan. Really the data they want is racist. They want data on White NZers.

I think by Stats NZ’s definition, my ethnicity is a NZer. It’s a proper common name, it’s my country of geographic origin and that of my ancestors, I have unique feelings and actions for this country, I share a common culture.

And last but not least the Waitemata health board asks your religion?!, and your gender which has two options male and female. I thought Gender had many options. I thought gender was woman and man and non binary and other and Sex was female and male.

Listening to Luxon on The Platform today I heard him say that he’s committed to net zero (he’s looked at the climate science and accepts that we have to do it – sigh), but he’s not going to wreck the economy doing it.

Hands up who thinks that’s even possible?

I’ll have to listen back to be sure I heard him correctly, but I think Sean asked how much difference it would make to the climate if we achieved it, and Luxon basically said ‘none’. I don’t know what to make of that. A lot of people would agree with him on that, but you’d then have to wonder why we wouldn’t spend all that net zero money on useful things instead, wouldn’t you?

Oh well, let’s hope he’s serious about not wrecking our economy, and spends just a little bit of time thinking about how FF have made the world a better place.

  What it means is that he thinks the AGW consensus is now so firmly embedded that he won’t/can’t argue against it.
  
  So the next best thing to do is copy the virtual-signalling voters in talking about Climate Change and talking about Net Zero in order to placate them and get their votes, stringing them along just as Labour does – but not actually doing the things that such an “emergency” would require:
  
  As his first act as president, Inslee declared a national climate emergency. As his second, he announced national carbon rationing. Until further notice, consumers were limited to one tank of gas per month. Based on time of year and regional climates, natural gas and heating oil deliveries to households were cut by as much as 60%. Utilities were directed to submit plans within the month to cut total electricity generation by 40% and to optimize their existing generation mix to use as little fossil generation as possible.
  
  About a decade ago I said (probably on KB) that rather than continuing to waste time arguing with the AGW fanatics it was better to just watch their fantasy solutions crash and burn, hoping that our tailgating the global leaders would eventually result in valuable lessons. It’s a risky approach I admit, and not as effective a lesson as power price rises of 2-4 times plus blackouts.
  
  But it is politically smart: let the dumb bastards continue to scream and then ask them if they really want petrol at $10-$20/litre, 204x power costs and all the rest. The voters would hate that, crucify any politician that tried it, and everybody knows it, even the Greens.

  Seymour said the out-of-date fleet was a sign the Government wasn’t investing enough in defence. Um David, the Air Force 757s don’t have any guns on them, they are only good for ‘escape.’

      I get the point – with a delegation of 100 flying commercial would be a nightmare. There is no PM in the developed world who would fly commercial to do this. (No Australian PM in the last 60 years would have set foot on a commercial airplane – even flying within Australia.)
      
      But if there is a case for a 100 delegation, surely the answer is to charter a plane. Charter a Boeing 787 that can fly from Auckland to Beijing non stop with no issues.
      
      Only alternative is to buy fit for purpose military/VIP planes. Otherwise New Zealand looks worse than a joke.
      
      And don’t buy the “we can’t afford it” – the Government drops tens of billions on crap.

So after pissing away billions of dollars for no or little in the way of outcomes the lefties are now concerned over National spending money to keep repeat offenders in prison which are about 20-30% empty anyway. Most crims used to have upwards of 30 convictions before they hit prison, so any thought of prison creating them is BS, they were already well down that track. Fat chance of rehabbing them.

But while they are in prison they can’t commit crimes, killing, injuring and thieving, costing billions every year. So overall prison is a place to keep bad people who want to do bad things and protect the public from them. Although an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, it’s money well spent in my view. The other area to address while incarcerating the recidivist adults is stopping the kids getting involved in the first place, detect them early and deter them by placing consequences on them showing them there are consequences for actions. The current catch and release policy in place at the moment will only damage them further.

  Agree. First-time (low-level) offending kids get a warning, and a supervised watching of a 30min video of what awaits them on a second offence. Second offence they get a few days in a shitty prison. Crap food, no screens, just books to read, and solitary exercise.     There were three resolutions:
    Resolution A: Go with RSSA bid
    Resolution B: Go ith the MBIE-organised bid comprising WHL and PTL
    Resolution C: The default if neither of the prior resolutions passes.
    
    Resolutions voted on in order. First one to pass wins. To win you needed 50% or more of the voters, and you needed those voters to represent 75% or more of the debt.
    
    MBIE and ANZ own most of the debt (because apparently a Life Pass with 50 years to run on it is only worth $2500 when it would take some $15,000-$20,000 to replace with season passes).
    
    So:
    Resolution A receives some 75% of voters, but only about 10% of debt, because MBIE and ANZ voted against it and most Life Pass Holders voted for it.
    
    Resolution B received some 44% of voters and (I can’t remember, well over) 75% of the debt because MBIE and ANZ voted for this, but a lesser number of Life Pass Holders voted for this.
    
    So each failed, but for a different reason. Hence option C.
    
    Crucially, MBIE didn’t turn up to the watershed, and when I asked why MBIE wouldn’t forgive the same debt for RSSA as they would for WHL/PTL, a Chapmann Tripp lawyer stood up and said nothing valuable.
    
    So now we have a scramble

Why does NZ health measure outcomes based on your gender, ethnicity and age.
But crash fatalities are only gender and age.

Road Fatalities between 2022 – 2018 have also only been Male or Female according to Transport Stats. Are non-Binary people better drivers? Are they just sticking non- Binary people in a Male or Female category. If you are assigned a sex at birth are you also assigned one at death.

Hmm, so will this mean with falling numbers the government will pay to keep staff that aren’t needed in the hope that foreign students will ignore the constant stories of how unsafe it is here. Maybe we could do a deal and have the staff fill potholes until student numbers increase……

Newshub understands the Government will on Tuesday announce a major bailout package for universities on the brink.

It’s understood the cash is aimed at tiding universities over while they recover from a sharp drop in student numbers – as much as 4 percent – as well as international students.

Yet another example of corporate welfare with the Labour govt bailing out the ski fields to the tune of $5mil (for now). Not a fan of corporate welfare, but at the same time, a lot of the financial pain over the last few years can be directly sheeted back to govt policy. Covid lockdowns, mandates, vax passes etc. The mistake they made was not claiming a percentage ownership in the fields. If you’re going to do socialism, at least do it right!

Now for the important stuff. The hypocrisy and optics on display here gives me delicious schadenfreude. Socialists bailing out a corporation…AGAIN. Because socialists wrecked the economy…AGAIN. The fact it is a sport that is more popular with the affluent makes it so much funnier. Are they going to bail out some golf courses next?

Had my big bag of popcorn ready to read the hilarious comments from Labour devotees on Stuff news. Last week, trickle down theory was a “right wing myth” and this week, Labour “had to do this to save jobs and the local economy” AKA trickle down theory. In other words, it’s OK when the left do it! Bwahaha!

  The Ngāti Tūwharetoa iwi has expressed interest in purchasing the Ruapehu ski fields in a deal announced this afternoon by Kiri Allan.
  
  Allan, the Minister for Regional Development, also announced a $5 million injection to allow the liquidators of Ruapehu Alpine Lifts to run the company until a favourable outcome can be secured.
