Anyone else that thinks that our Prime Minister Chris Hipkins looked like a child waiting for a lollipop as a reward when shaking President Xi Jingping’s hand on Tuesday Evening.
Like his predecessor former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern he talked in riddles about his meeting with the President of China.

Nothing will depress the mind more than a trip through the provinces. Travelling into Eketahuna one is greeted by the sex shop (yes Eketahuna has one) sporting a smashed in front door following a ram raid last night (Monday). Apparently the raiders did a crime spree from Masterton to Palmerston North leaving a trail of destruction behind them.

I sit down to read the local newspaper and find that a young man who had smashed and robbed the Michael Hill store in Masterton in broad daylight has had his sentence deferred once again while awaiting cultural reports and a drug and alcohol report. That’ll show him!

Meanwhile the local government and central government are colluding to further lower speed limits around the region. This is massively unpopular but everyone knows local opinion will be cast aside by the Labour government’s hopelessly naive road to zero policy.

Everything is falling apart. Crime is out of control. Meanwhile our politicians main focus is to control the law abiding citizens and force them to drive even slower on the highways and byways of the Wairarapa. The police are everywhere on the roads enforcing the 80kms speed limit while seemingly powerless to stop the crime wave?

Can things get any worse under this government? Yes they can and they are.

  I have mentioned this before on KB, but I don’t think problems of the sort you refer to will go away because there is such a long time between an offender being apprehended and the offender being tried. In the interval, offenders will feel free to continue what they have been doing, and this is evident from the fact that some individuals are serial offenders.
  
  What we need is summary justice, especially in those cases where there is no doubt as to the identity of the offender.
  
  Apprehend the offender, charge them and have them in court for sentencing the next day.

    My old man was a country cop back in the day, and from what a large number of people have told me (years later) he was considered a good and effective cop.
    
    He had a different kind of summary justice, that didn’t involve long waits for court cases, cultural reports and so on – also it didn’t necessarily involve violence as you may think. It was effective in that the miscreant was encouraged back onto the right path without having a criminal record or going through the system. Whether they responded to that encouragement and pulled their head in was up to them, but in the vast majority of cases they did.

        I would really like to think that is correct, but the evidence is against it.
        
        Item: the enthusiasm clearly on display when police got to enforce lockdowns and go easy on iwi roadblocks
        
        Item: the alacrity and perseverance with which most police willingly participated in the gun-theft
        
        Item: police union chief Cahill getting elected every year on a platform largely of taking guns away from licensed firearms owners
        
        Item: zero whistleblowing about the awfully lax, lazy or incompetent or all of the above way the butcher of Christchurch was not vetted
        
        Item (and this one really stands out for me): observing and very close hand, up close and personal, police in isolation hotels actively bullying those of us who were detained for two weeks after winning the humiliating lottery to come back to our own country if we did not immediately snap to and abide by every little equally humiliating restriction up to and including paying for our own incarceration. (For example, if you were lucky enough to get onto the exercise schedule, you would be told off if you walked over to fast or too slow. If you could see a delivery coming from a supermarket from out of your window, and try to communicate with the delivery driver, you get yelled at for opening a window and the police would come and knock on your door. While the paid-for delivery vanished into the distance.
        
        We have our own Stasi-in-training, as much as people would like to think that’s not so. Sure there’s a good proportion of good people, but they are basically invisible when it comes to being a dairy owner, someone whose home has been invaded, someone whose car has been stolen and trashed and stripped, someone who is trying to run a business and going broke because of serial shoplifters who if and when they are caught, get a free police taxi home to their parents.

    This nearly happened to me a while ago. The car wasn’t stolen as the battery was not there and being an automatic they couldn’t start it running down the hill. But lots of damage, one window smashed and ignition pulled out with vise-grip or similar and half of the dashboard smashed up. In the end it cost me $400 in excess and almost 2 month wait for the replacement ignition.

  Discovered one of the last bastions of (almost) unconstrained speed in this country last week. Returned from a few days in the Pacific (an island, but we did spend time in the Pacific), landing back in Auckland around 630PM.
  
  Once through the usual rigmarole of customs etc, collect vehicle, head south. The new sections of the Waikato expressway are, if traveled at night, devoid of traffic. Hooked up with a couple of other like minded citizens and gobbled up the miles at a quite unseemly pace.
  
  Until we get back onto local roads that used to be 80 (now 50) and 100 (now 80). Sigh. But fun whilst it lasted.

I’d suggest the recent raid on Trump probably did more to galvanise Republican sentiment to rally around Trump than anything Trump couls have said or done.

      I’d say that John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the first (or certainly the most public) evidence of that to anyone with two braincells to rub together. The consensus persecution of Trump for the last 8 years is also a pretty sound datum as to who runs things.

        Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. suffers from a voice disorder called spasmodic dysphonia, also referred to as laryngeal dystonia.
        This allegedly makes it difficult for him to speak in public.
        But I guess that as the current President also has difficulty speaking in public, it shouldn’t be too big a deal for Kennedy.

        I listened to a long interview (the “deplatformed” Jordan Peterson one) with him and came away from it thinking all he has said is he’ll do what JFK wanted to do, and someone he trusts told him anthropogenic global warming is true so it must be although he hasn’t himself looked into the science even although he has read thousand of scientific papers and he is in a position to make his own judgement. Not exactly inspiring although I support his anti-war/American-adventurism-in-other-countries stance

I disagree with him on nuclear, but the main thing is, he’s speaking from the heart and points out that it is ok for us to disagree on things but still be able to work together.

      The problem he will have is he is anti war, anti big pharma and anti corruption.
      
      He is not afraid to challenge things and call people out.

      I suspect like the rest of his family he will be disappeared before he even gets close to power.

  Amazing that I only ever took an interest in American Politics when I was in Alaska in 2015. I asked out host family who would win in 2016. They all said Trump, and some of them are Democrats! I did not see how, with Trump being in business. They all said “you watch” And he did win.

    Police themselves explained they were unavailable, so weren’t coming, and so to let the scum go.
    Interesting to note, the comments from the scum while pinned suggest he is out on parole.
    Police should be resourced to attend these events – Labour and the Police leadership assert there is no resource issue. Obviously a lie.
    Should at least lift any wallet/ID from the guy and record his details before letting him go. Take some good photos, and let the police catch up with him later.

At the end I looked for the punchline, to see what they were selling and who was selling this.
Didn’t get the punchline, and it took me several goes to find the English words on the screen, because the large fonts were in Maori.
Eventually discovered it was Ministry of Health.
Don’t know what they were selling.

    It’s all quite bizarre. In Canada, government websites will either respect your locale (your browser language preference: French or English, generally falling back to English unless you’re on a Quebec provincial government website) and adapt accordingly before the page is even loaded. If not, there’s always a little button to switch between languages. They are very serious about it, every single bit of text is available in both languages. I have a reasonable command of French and the translations seem excellent, and very direct, there is a strict 1:1 concordance and only rarely do you see things like “French translation in preparation”. Never are the two languages mixed within a sentence, or on the same page—and accessibility is an excellent reason why that’s the correct thing to do. Simple readibility is another.
    
    In New Zealand, it feels like we’re being lectured at and made to feel inadequate for not knowing enough Maori, rather than the wider availability and even prioritisation of the Maori language on official websites being something that actually assists in communicating information. I’m tempted to say that it’s not done in good faith.

I also got permanently banned from the Labour Party chat by Clare Curran. Because of a comment I made on Whaleoil! I emailed Curran at her MP mail address and pointed out that a pseudo “ColonialViper” on the Standard called for National Party people and voters to be lined up and shot, yet he still got to comment on the Labour site (and by the by, my comment was on a photo on whaleoil, something like, “beware folks, these people get to vote”).     Get more police officers on the beat and importantly get more psych workers to handle the mad not bad people (because a lot of these family harm things are code for someone having a mental incident)
    
    I dont accept and neither should anyone casual theft being accepted in this manner, especially when the thief is captured by law abiding citizens

  You are right JBJ, vigilantism is the next step when people lose faith in their police to protect them or start the judicial system by taking offenders to Court.
  
  It’s also why people feel unsafe, Ginny, because the protectors aren’t protecting. I am strongly supportive of front line staff but sadly they are led by donkeys both in PNHQ and the Beehive.

What’s in a metaphor?

There’s a bit of disagreement over the naming of the civic buildings in Waihōpai. Formerly known as Invercargill. Apparently, one of the Waihōpai Council administration buildings has been named Te Hinaki Civic Building. According to the Mana Whenua council representative, one Evelyn Cook, it can mean sustenance and nourishment, which is correct as it undoubtedly provides plenty of sustenance and nourishment to its inhabitants. The detractors insist though, that this fine name translates to “eel pot”, and suggests something slippery, evil and cunning. Who is right is still to be decided by the elected representatives of all Waihōpaians.

Perhaps they could also decide why an administration building even needs a name, but I’m not holding my breath hoping that this will ever happen…

    A more colourful name would have been Inverkelly, for the Irish ex-convict from Australia who was the first settler on the site.
    
    John Kelly was “transported” from England to Australia at the age of 15 for stealing 13 yards of printed cotton. He was flogged during his Australian imprisonment. Paroled, he came to southern New Zealand as a seal hunter, and settled and raised a family, first at Bluff, and later what became Invercargill.
    
    Kelly’s descendants had a memorial gathering in Invercargill in March.
    
    The city was named after a leader of the Scots Presbyterian settlement, William Cargill.

Invercargill’s Mayor, Nobby Clark, has been held to a draw as Southland battles on over the region’s small Maori minority pushing for renaming public institutions with Maori names.

Maori packed the council meeting, reports Left-wing Stuff’s Southland Times, as the council “accepted the bottom line of a proposal from Mayor Nobby Clark, to develop a protocol to advance the bilingual naming of the city’s civic buildings.”

Here’s what Nobby Clark initially proposed:

The “bilingual approach’’ should be taken with all new premises such as the new museum and proposed art gallery, but not to such heritage venues as the Scottish Hall, ICC debating chamber, Civic Theatre and Eve Poole Civic Library, Clark proposed.

Where a bilingual name was used, the English version should be displayed first “given the very small number of te reo speakers’’.

Councillor Lesley Soper was the councillor supporting Maori naming reported by the Southland Times. Soper was a Labour list MP from April 2005 to August 2005 and again from February 2007 to November 2008.

  Among public reported supporting Maori names at the Invercargill City Council meeting was Toni Biddle, who was an unsuccessful candidate for Invercargill Mayor against Nobby Clark.
  
  This is reported in the Otago Daily Times article about the council meeting pointed to by poster Taieri earlier in this thread.
  
  Biddle told the council meeting Clark’s proposal on Maori names was awful and divisive to the community.
  
  Biddle was city councillor appointed deputy mayor by Tim Shadbolt. However, she later resigned from the council.
  
  Stuff reported in August last year when Biddle announced she was standing for mayor that she had stepped down earlier citing a toxic environment which affected her health, and the challenges of doing the mayor’s job for Shadbolt while being deputy mayor.

I heard Chris Luxon saying he would never use the 757s as Prime Minister and that we “can’t afford” to replace them.

I think he is wrong. The 757s are not just there to give the PM a ride. They are a critical part of the transport capability of the airforce.

If the country can’t afford to replace 2 airforce airplanes, what does that say about what we have become? If he wins government he is facing a 24 billion dollar bill just to reach the 2030 emissions targets. He seems perfectly fine with this. And that is just the very beginning of the bill for “net zero”.

    I have respect for Mr Luxon as a successful, high level business manager. Is he good with leading people who are not his employees? Don’t know.
    If he stopped acting goofy at times and just told it like it is, he would portray a more positive alternative to the amateur-hour lot who have the power now (thanks largely to the support of the msm).
    And at least his deputy, Ms Willis, comes across as competent and knowledgeable about her portfolios- which is more than can be said about 95% of the Labour/Maori/Green Party ministers.
    Is she a leader with more popular appeal than Luxon?

      I have a nasty gut feeling that some sort of back room deal/coup has been swung in the Nats .
      
      They had been polling very well under Bridges/Bennett , a reasonably competent and for the times suitably diverse , a Maori male ‘female couple .
      
      But it seems to me they represented the “right wing” of the Nats and had to be replaced at any and all cost , even crashing their polling . So we had the Muller farce , then Collins ,and now what appears to be a pair of leaders who’re on board with what can only be called the Globalist Agenda .
      And there’s plenty of evidence of it with the climate bollocks , the keenness to take up EV , the very simplistic “one man one vote” , when we actually need root and branch entrenchment of democratic values , local and nationally.
      His talk of boot camps and minimising but not ending cultural reports when what we need are more and bigger prisons , and much stronger sentencing etc
      
      The notion too that he’s Key’s heir is also suspect , that handshake business being a “signal” to the faithful . While Key was no Messiah either .
      
      I despair .
      
      But while I don’t agree with everything Act is about , they’re currently the best bet and constitutionally sounder than the wet Nats .
      
      ps when i say need change , I don’t mean change Lux , I mean the country is going in a terrible direction in so many ways and the Nats aren’t going to fix it .

    I don’t think NZ has nearly the strategic importance as some of the other choke points: South Africa, Horn of Africa, S America and Sri Lanka.
    
    Perhaps NZ could act as a base in a potential China-Australian conflict, but there are other places much closer.

        Sure there are huge resources in the Southern Ocean etc, but NZ does not really act as a choke point to control that. Argentina is batter.
        
        Sigint from land bases isn’t as important as it used to be. Satellites can do a lot, but there are some aspects where land bases work better.

The Trillions of $’s of debt can never be paid back (mathematically impossible), interest rates are now gobbling up huge amounts of money, and the era of money printing has ended.

It’s not creepy at all, and the idea that Chris Luxon would personally intervene in court cases is both completely and utterly false, and repugnant.

What National WILL do is amend the Sentencing Act, so that the provisions which allow judges to apply almost limitless discounts to sentences are replaced by a limit of 40%. Secondly, they will legislate so that discounts for things like age and remorse can only be used once, not over and over again.

But hey BeeBeaumont and others; keep on lying, if that’s the best you’ve got. Just remember that no many how many times you speak a lie, it’s still a lie.

And to Chris Luxon and the team; the majority of New Zealanders will be pleased with this policy, so keep up the good work.

Julian Batchelor doubles down on Kiwis arming themselves for civil war. This deserves highlighting – a very good point, why are police so eager to deny this:

So why would the police be trying hard to play down the reality of people buying guns in preparation for a possible civil war?

The truth of the matter is – and this is what they ought to be paying attention to – is that if free speech is not vigorously protected in New Zealand, and preserved, tensions will continue to rise and the matter of people arming themselves for possible civil war is not only real and actual, but it will escalate.

Free speech is at the heart of the issue.

When people are denied the right to debate issues, to discuss matters of interest freely, in public, without interruption, then bad things begin to happen.

A healthy democracy depends on freedom of speech.

The police are partly to blame for people going out and arming themselves. How so?

They are, with rare exceptions, soft on protestors.

We have had some of our meetings shut down because of protestors.

We have had our right to free speech cancelled. No one is arrested. No one charged. No one taken away in a police wagon. No police seen dispersing the protesters telling them to go home.

What should the police be doing? How should they respond?

They ought to arrest and impound protestors, charge them, and fine them. They are disturbing the peace and shutting down free speech.

This would send a clear message to protesters that they have a right to protest, but not at the expense of stopping someone speaking freely, and not at the expense of stopping from hearing those who have come to hear the speakers.

For this the protesters have absolutely no right. None at all.

But the police do not do this i.e. what I have described.

Sometimes they actually encourage the protesters.

The media are also to blame for escalating tensions in New Zealand and the proliferation of talk about guns and people arming themselves.

How so?

They don’t defend Julian’s right to free speech. In fact, they whip up public hate and distaste for Julian, always portraying him as a villain who must at all costs be shut down. In other words, they fuel those who are intent on shutting down free speech.

As such, they are disgracefully irresponsible.

Conclusion?

People in New Zealand are going to continue to arm themselves, as long as the police and the media fuel the fires.”

  There are a few other niche departments at Otago like surveying, which could join up with Canterbury civil eng.

The constellation is in the sky, bright and distinctive enough that probably every culture that ever saw it has a name for it. And lots of them held festivals timed according to movements of the sun, moon or stars. Why shouldn’t Maori do so too?
    
    Since Maori also live here in New Zealand, why shouldn’t we have a public holiday each year that celebrates one of their festivals? We have other holidays that relate to non-Maori festivals (such as Christmas, western New Year, and Easter).

    Well, name suppression doesn’t apply to everyone: it seems that old white guys get their names and photos published ( OK, he was a creep ) but we all know the reasons for most crims to get anonymity.

  Allan just got a promotion to associate minister of Finance as Wood finally got the chop for giving the finger to conflict of interest rules.
  
  Is this leave because Allan has crapped the bed in some way that has not yet been revealed and is trying to create a may-not-be-questioned narrative? Or is it just due to the normal (for Labour) level of incompetence she displays?

In my experience, confident and competent Ministers do not abuse public servants. Sure they might get grumpy, but they do not indulge in bullying and abuse. The fireworks start when things are constantly going wrong. The easiest action is to lash out at the help.

Seems greens are against people paying a fair share for road usage, but are getting pushback on their Twitter account

Imagine the greens supporting policy that allows for poor people to pay for rich people to buy cheaper cars and not pay road usage. Greens, the rich prick party.

Green MP Julie Anne Genter has hit out at National after the party’s leader promised to make electric vehicle drivers pay road user charges if elected in October.

Christopher Luxon made the promise during an interview with AM earlier on Wednesday.

“We’re making great progress in converting our fleet to low-emission vehicles, which is making a huge difference to reaching our climate targets and it’s clear that National has no interest in continuing that,” Genter said in a statement.

“A National Government would send our progress on climate change back decades.”

While the stance proved contentious with the Greens, others backed the National Party’s plan.

“If you use a road, you must pay a share of the costs,” one Twitter user said.

Another called the plan “commonsense”.

“Excellent about time,” said another. “Everyone driving on the roads should pay their fair share of taxes.”
