  Just read the post about Kiri Allan. Over the 50 years I have spent leading a team I have observed we dont do management (or governance) very well in NZ. Whilst not holding myself out as an expert I have learnt a lot starting as a 21 yo with a team of 8 women the youngest several years older than me and the oldest the age of my grandmother.
  I learnt you have to respect the people you lead and coach and emcourage them to do well. I used the One Minute Manager style and it always worked well for me.
  Turning to politicians it appears most come into Parliament with little or no interpersonal skills big egos and suffering from Dont You Know Who I Am disease. They lack empathy and humility. They think they are Gods gift and can walk on water.
  Well they aint. They are a mish mash of humans struggling to learn how to deal with other humans. Allan is just one of many examples.

    Like you it took me a while to work out the best management style to get the best out of others, and in my view it starts with listening and genuinely wanting the best for each of your team.
    
    The irony with MPs is that they couldn’t get to where they are without a selfless team of people volunteering to help you get elected, and most of the volunteers do it for the party and what (they believe) it represents, rather than the MPs personally. Yet the behaviour you mention, and which we witness every week it seems like, proves that many of them are egocentric, entitled, show ponies. Go figure.

      Part of the proplem is people including staff treat them as though they were special and they come to believe it.
      You sit in on Zoom calls and OMG the minister is going to speak, be still my beating heart, the honour, the honour.
      A shame they mostly have nothing useful to add to the conversation.

    As a junior I took the view that my job was to make my bosses look good, IOW I worked my little heart out for them. As I progressed through the ranks I changed gears to smoothing the pathway for my own staff, ie running interference for them, having discovered the perils of bureaucracy. I wouldn’t change that strategy today.

  The continued wet weather, and resulting animal welfare, animal health and pasture destruction are causing concerns to ring in Northland, a Farmsource rep I talked to says he doesn’t talk about the weather to customers any more, he can see the stress in their faces. It has been a continuous stressful 14 months with no let up in the pressure.

  The climate is changing more rapidly than in the past. There’s very little we can do about that with regulations and taxes. Humans will adapt as they always have. But there will be considerable work needed to adapt to living on a warmer planet, and getting that work done will not be helped by people insisting there is nothing wrong.

        In answer to his question, Ian Wishart noted that there is lots of evidence around weather ‘extreme events’ at the close of the 19th century, as by that time there were barometer readings, but NIWA chose to take no note of earlier records.
        I am no expert in this of course, but his sampling (and it was only partial) showed plenty of evidence to put the ‘once in a hundred year’ events that happen all the time now in to a ‘with a grain of salt’ as far as headlines.
        I don’t think anyone know the truth, as they just twist it to fit a pre-existing agenda around the science (alarmist of denialist), or even just a puerile interest in clicks and fear porn for the MSM.

      Of course the world won’t be at any temperature in 2050 or at any other time. Temperature distribution will continue to be in a very wide range, depending on where you are on the planet.
      
      As Billy Connolly said, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing.
      
      It’s staggering the people who still fall for this made-up “climate emergency” BS. Some of them seem to be otherwise intelligent, but have clearly fallen for the Chicken Licken scenario.

    I am sorry but that statement is false.
    
    Neither the temperatures being observed nor the rate of warming are at all unusual.
    
    In the first IPCC report they said
    “The size of the warming over the last century is broadly consistent with the predictions ol climate models but is also of the same magnitude as natural climate variability”
    ( IPCC FAR WG1 page xxix)
    
    If you want to see a really high rate of temperature change, look up the Younger Dryas.

        The important thing about this is the rate of change.
        
        Just as the world was warming up at the end of the last interglacial, there was a dramatic drop in temperature, followed by warming.
        
        The rates of cooling and warming were much larger than the current small warming.

    Not a roving decimal point Steve, it’s simply that the syntax of hyperlinks can’t deal with them. It treats anything up to the decimal point and anything after it as separate elements, and the link won;t work, so it simply removes them.
    
    Similar to how hyperlinks that have words with macrons in them leave out those letters, so “Māori” shows as “Mori”.

        If I had a mental health issue, I would not be fit to work in an engineering workshop. 135 ton pressbrake, guillotine cutting 2.5M x 5mm thick, welders, gas axes, forklifts x 2. Then dealing with the customers has to be done the right way.

        Ghost, we all need to be aware of mental health, and support people, and not just say ‘take a concrete pill’ ; on the other hand, for politicians and public figures it is a good way to escape scrutiny when they have fucked up and the pressure comes specifically from their own actions.
        
        So, yes, what you say is true – but when it is a self diagnosis and announcement to the press it is also akin to squirting a cloud of squid ink.
        
        If Kiri was to check herself into a facility or be known to be seeking proffesional help, then I would agree 100% without qualification.
        If she is retreating home to light scented candles, not answering the phone, and more akin to ‘mental health days’ like I take from work, not so much.

* The numbers talk about road deaths involving alcohol. No mention of other factors such as unsafe car or roads, drugs, age or licence status of driver, or stupidity.
* No acknowledgment that the drink drive limit was slashed in 2014.
* No per capita or vehicle volume analysis ie number of cars on the road.

The usual suspects will use this story to push their barrow.

There may be a kernel of truth in there somewhere, but this story ain’t it.

      That’s not true. Multipanel drug testing of saliva can detect amphetamines incl meth, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, opioids, cannabis (THC), phencyclidine (PCP) and alcohol and are used by some police forces for roadside testing. These test are not as accurate as laboratory testing.

      Aus has had roadside quick tongue-scrape tests for meth and cannabis for quite some time. If you test positive you then get carted off to a machine for more precise testing.
      Usually it’s a weekend (not always though) drug bus roadblock, or they’ve spotted a driver being an obvious dick on the road.

What the issue with it is that these men are supposed to be big boy professional rugby players. They are paid huge money to play. It is their job. And it is the public and the sponsors who pay them.
The Chiefs seem to be a team that is ruled by emotion and “it’s not fair” excuses – their players and immature supporters in the stands more special than any others. If they want to get paid to play, then they should be able to front no matter what the circumstances.
Have a cry together in the changing shed by all means – but Mr McMillan’s call to protect the Chiefs co-captains from having to face a few questions was pathetic and unbecoming to the game.
Will Cane be able to talk if the AB’s get beaten at the World Cup? Or will Mr Foster do the loser speech?

      I’m a Crusaders fan and was stunned that a red card was not awarded for Lenard Browns high ‘tackle’. This one judging error made a massive difference to the game. The Crusaders lost one of their better players to injury and the Chiefs got to keep one of theirs on the field.
      
      When the game finished I said to other, equally angry Crusaders fans, just wait for the Chiefs supporters to blame the ref on their loss. ‘3 yellow cards’ ‘refed out of the game’ etc.
      
      Low and behold I was right.
      
      The issue that seems rampant with ALL NZ rugby (and probably other sports) fans is that when an outcome doesn’t go as we hope we look for someone to blame. In Rugby its often the referee.
      Yes the ref missed a forward pass from the Crusaders, they probably miss at least one a game. Yes the ref missed the call on the red card. Sometimes mistakes are made. If you look at the infringements from the Chiefs in their 22, they were damned lucky to get away with giving away penalties for as long as they did. If you were being honest.
      Sometimes referees are ‘bad’, the strength of a good team is playing to the ref. If the ref isn’t picking up offsides then start playing off side. NZ rugby fans need to grow up. Sometimes your team looses, if they loose it’s the players, captain and management to blame. Not the ref.
      
      I think the Ref in this game did pretty well.
      
      p.s.
      To all the Rugby rans who think the Crusaders get the rub of the ball from the referee, please understand that here in Crusaders land we think the referees (and commentary teams, I’m looking at you Justin Marshal) are biased against the Crusaders. It’s all a matter of perspective. Remember when Ritchie Mcaw used to get pinged all the time for the Crusaders and that refs would announce before the game they were going to pay special attention to certain areas of the game.         But they just could stop their own season long pattern of extras in the tackle/ruck – arm left in, coming in on the angle and up the side…. Crusaders obviously raised it to the referee before the game and he looked, saw the illegality and pinged it. Chiefs should have adjusted and trusted their D… could have won the game by adapting.
        
        ALB should have gone – clear red – old school chest to chest tackle which almost guarantees head to head contact. Do that at the RWC straight red every time

        OK, a Blues fan from Auckland here – and I agree with most of what you said.
        I would just add two things – I agree the head clash was a probable Red, but I dont agree with the rule generally (it was accidental) and would hate to see the final decided that way after 20 mins. So I was OK with the Yellow and the TMO review.
        Secondly, yes the Forward Pass was an obvious miss, but the Ref got no help from the Linesman,
        and it happened right in front of one of them.

        The real issue here is that you can get sent off for an accidental head clash.
        
        Be it yellow or red, the effect of this on a game is massive and effectively ruins the contest.
        
        The world cup will be decided by an accidental contact in full contact sport, ruining the contest for the millions interested.
        
        Keep going the way you are and it will be ripper rugby only.
        
        Don’t worry, you can make up for it by having goal line drop outs and 50/22’s in an effort to make it more entertaining like league.
        
        Take a leaf out of leagues rule book. Accidental headclash, play on. Shoulder to head – 10 minutes and on report.

      I’ve watched every super Rugby final since Super Rugby was a thing. I can recall only one other where the ref was the news post match, as in this case. Generally speaking well reffed games don’t result in ongoing discussions about the ref no?
      
      I do believe that refs need their wings clipped in terms of yellow card use. That’s a matter for SANZAR. I agree the ALB card had to be red. BTW I’m no Chiefs.

    Chiefs always blame someone else for their ineptitude. Foster did it, Gatland did it and now McMillan. They seem to think they are entitled to win the comp when they string a few wins in the rounds together. Canterbury know that you have to WIN the final, not just have an entitlement because you’ve played ok before. When did you hear Robertson complain about the ref? Or before him Blackadder? In fact, when asked about the penalty given in the final against McCaw which saw the Crusaders lose, Blackadder said, “the loss had nothing to do with the referee. If we’d played better, we would have won”. Or Deans. How often do you see Crusaders players questioning the ref? They just back up and get on with it when they are penalised.

Thames water in the UK which supplies London and surrounding countys with water is groaning under a 15Billion pound debt and may default leaving the UK government to bail it out or nationalise.
The Thames Water funding model is the same as is proposed for three/make that ten waters in NZ.
Should we be worried?
Also I see establishment costs for three/ten waters in NZ have shot up. The reportage suggests a cost blow out to 2 billion.
Can some-one please cut the crown credit card as it is maxed out.

Yup, that seems to be how bureaucracies respond to any change – even change which is supposed to shrink it. Any time there’s a bit of wiggle room it enlarges itself: expands its scope as well as head count.

All our councils have slowly (and sometimes rapidly) grown from providing the boring basics: pipes in the ground, parking meters and fixing potholes to the extended stuff: social engineering functions etc.

Universities need a massive bailout because the international students haven’t returned fast enough. The balance of payments is in the toilet because the tourism recovery in NZ isn’t as strong as it’s been elsewhere. Employment shortages remain because Immigration NZ is too slow processing visas in a new and cumbersome regime (and NZ was too slow to focus on being genuinely attractive to immigrants).

I know it’s no longer cool to talk about COVID, but all of these things are a DIRECT RESULT of central government dismissing predictions by industry that these consequences would flow from their COVID policy choices. Tourism groups begged for earlier reopening of borders, but the government told them to “pivot” their businesses towards domestic travellers. Tertiary providers knew they were screwed without the Chinese and came up with schemes to get them back earlier, but these were dismissed on spurious health grounds. Immigration NZ still hasn’t staffed up properly, so there’s a warning on the website saying processing times are longer than expected.

If I hear how “strong” our COVID response was one more time, I might scream.

Against that background, guess what? If you (or an international tourist…) catches COVID, it is still a legal requirement in NZ to isolate in place for 7 days and not use public transport.

The launch of the It’s Not All About Me Party and the Democracy NZ implosion has lead me to the conclusion that there’s not much hope of any new minor party entering parliament, New Conservative appears to accept this by pushing the idea that major parties have adopted their policies in some cases.
I’m thinking that support for the Taxpayers Union and Free Speech Union will be most important, no matter which party gets into parliament this year.

We were having an icecream at a store out of town the other day just after dark and as it was raining we stayed inside till we had finished.
A young man came in with a black hoodie, black gloves, black tracksuit pants and a black mask covering his face. He eventually bought some bottles of fizzy drink and chippies AND paid but his behaviour and the disguise suggested he was ready to rob the store if people hadn’t been there.

New Zealanders who sold racehorses to China may be interested in Chinese automation of farrier work, as in the first link below. Do NZ farriers now use power-tool planers rather than snippers and rasps?

Series of videos are running on YouTube of Chinese farriers at work on horses, mules, and donkeys, and puzzlingly seem to have captured an international following. For example, Master Lu, working on donkey hoofs, has almost a daily posting, and sometimes more frequently, as he attacks long hoofs, sometimes using something like a spade.

This rekindles the story of Lin Lang, an ethnic Manchu from China’s Inner Mongolia, who bought more than a thousand racehorses from NZ, preferring pregnant mares. This was a gamble on China re-introducing horse racing with gambling. (Is has long been legal in Hong Kong). Could some of the horses in the Chinese farrier videos be descended from NZ imports?

Lang’s NZ company, Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry Co Limited, now in receivership, had as its home address Haridaobu Village, Khorchin County, Hinggan League, Inner Mongolia, China. The New Zealand receiver’s report says:

The company’s livestock was located at three stud farms; Windsor Park Stud in Cambridge, Highview Stud in Hamilton, and Willow Glen Stud in Waimate. Due the restrictions of the Covid 19 pandemic the Company was unable to export its livestock and the company’s director, Mr Lin Lang, returned to China, leaving the company without a New Zealand based director. The company ceased trading and during 2020 and 2021 the Company’s livestock located at the various studs was sold. The Company was in breach of its lending agreements with the Bank of China.

The Bank of China put Lang’s company into receivership.

The receivers say Mongolia Rider Horse Industry Co owned 46 per cent of the stallion, Mongolian Khan, and this, in accordance with the syndicate agreement with other owners, was to be realised (sold).

The receivers indicated there weren’t funds left for nearly $150,000 owed to unsecured creditors.

Last time I posted about Lin Lang’s business in NZ, an irate poster accused me, in effect, of waging war on the National Party. This was because Lin Lang in 2016 gave $150,000 to the party.

This story is too intriguing to be forgotten. Mongolians and their cousins the Manchu, are some of the great horse warriors of history. Suddenly there was an interest from them in NZ racehorses.

For the True Blue who would hush it up because of the gift to the National Party: you can look a gift horse in the mouth.

When I first saw Kiri Allan on TV I thought she seemed like a real breath of fresh air in a government full of idiots. But now the truth is coming out and I am a bit disappointed, it’s like every single person in the government is flawed in some way. I just cannot understand how they can be so terrible on every level. And I’m not excusing Allan’s behaviour towards staff but how can anyone possibly operate competently when you load them up with so many different portfolios? Of course you will likely break people when you dump so much on them. It’s a real inditement on Labour that with their massive result last election they have so few people to run things and even then they are so shit at doing it.

On the weekend I did a bit of research into the building of the Lyttleton tunnel back in the 1960s.

They didn’t have spreadsheets.
They didn’t have PowerPoint.
They didn’t have email, fax machines, 3D simulations and other “productivity tools” (unless you count the slide rule).
They didn’t feed the taniwha.
They didn’t have infinite government funding.
It was run by a bunch of boring old white guys.

The project ran to budget and on time.

Cost was about $150m in today’s money. For that we got a 2-and-a-bit km tunnel which has served reliably for 60 years and will continue to do so for decades.

Now $150m wouldn’t get you out of the paperwork stage. Even that would be over time and over budget.

  The cost of modern tunnels is increased continuously as safety features are improved and this also increases the cost and time taken. Among other things.

    I don’t sneeze at slide rules. It is worth noting that the USA hasn’t produced a single viable military aircraft since the end of the age of slide rules.
    
    The safety features in the Lyttleton tunnel are far from primitive. There was a lot of thought put into fire supression, traffic safety and such.
    
    It survived the Chch EQ, so nothing to sniff at there – many more modern structures didn’t cope.
    
    What do you think it would cost to build that today? Since a new bridge crossing across the Auckland harbour would be projected to cost $15bn (let’s call that $25bn after blowout) and the tunnel option $25bn (let’s call that $35bn after blowout), I would estimate building the Lyttleton tunnel today would cost $10bn to $15bn because it is a bit smaller and easier to engineer.
    
    So $10bn (best case) vs $150bn (1960s build adjusted for inflation). We’re taking 60x as much. For what? Don’t tell me it is 60x safer.

Other than the F-35 Lightning (introduced 2015), the F-22 Raptor (2005), F-18 Super Hornet (1999), C-27J Spartan (2006), MQ-1C Gray Eagle (2009), Prioria Robotics Maverick (2008), C37 (1997), C-40A Clipper (2001), EA-18G Growler (2009), P-18A Poseidon (2013), T-6 Texan II (2001), AC-130J Ghostrider (2017 – yes, it is a variation of 1996 Hercules), B2A Spirit (1997) among others. The list isn’t extensive. And doesn’t go in to the 1980’s where slide rules were not used for aircraft design. FYI, West Point were issued with calculators in 1979.

        The backbone of the US military are still C130, aka Hercules, from 1950s, F16 from the 1960s early 70s, A10 Warthog (1960s/early 70s), B52 bomber from the 1950s, Chinook helicopter from 1950s/early 60s, Blackhawk helicopter from the 1960s & early 70s…. and so on.
        
        Sure there have been some others, but they haven’t lasted long which is why I say they were not really viable.

  If one ever thoughtfully considered the idolisation of a politician and forgave them for everything they did no matter that it broke their otherwise normal values, it would likely mean they were crazy at the beginning and the whole through and just didn’t know it.

I remember when

Misinformation on Bottom trawling: Matt Hardyment, President Port of Nelson Fishermen’s Association. Seafoods NZ.
Some of the points raised –
. The small size of NZ Seabed that is commercially fished.
. Minimal effect compared with silt runoff after even small weather events.
. 40 to 50 years ago there was 10 times as much trawling and no starving fish.
. Sea cucumber are the only thing that likes to eat silt. Silt in and sand out other end.
. What are we doing with them?
Catching them and selling them to Asia.
. The lagoons of Aitutaki have crystal clear waters.
After the 2011 storms there the lagoons were full of sea cucumbers.

Is the effect of the silt runoff, the reason Greenpeace constantly talk about the damage from
trawling to seamounts.

    I agree about not poking fun of her mental health or her breakup with her girlfriend.
    
    However, her refusing to acknowledge complaints by staff about her behavior – no. She just says ‘nothing to see here’. If the CE of DoC has raised issues – at the highest level – she just needs to get on the phone to her and ask “What are the complaints?” That is what a normal person would do. Then reflect on the information, and if necessary apologise to the person. Release a media statement saying she will do better with her staff and apologise.
    
    And if she did that – the overwhelming response would be positive.

It seems anyone can claim “mental health” nowadays and everybody is too scared to challenge them. Now it seems for many it is just an excuse because you have hurty feelings, tiredness, I want a day off etc, etc. Genuine mental health problems need to be treated with respect, caring and treatment but to claim it because your life isn’t perfect is just not on. Everybody has good and bad days…learn to live with it. Genuine mental health concerns are not cured by a couple of days off work.

Stuff champion of Maori, Joe Maxwell, has a whine in the Southland Times today in which he says of Maori: “We weren’t even allowed to stand in general electorates until 1967.”

He omits that non-Maori weren’t allowed to stand as candidates for Maori seats until then, either.

The 1893 Act says of Maori electorate members of Parliament:

Such members shall be chosen respectively from amongst and by the votes of the Maoris inhabiting each of the several Maori electoral districts …

From 1852, New Zealanders were entitled to vote by owning a minimum amount of property. In 1867, Maori seats were introduced, and the few Maori who owned property separately from communal property were entitled to two votes – in a Maori electorate and in the non-Maori electorate.

With the Maori seats, all Maori men from age 21 had the vote. This was 12 years before all non-Maori men over 21 were able to vote.

From 1893, all New Zealand women and men could vote.

The 1893 Act defines ” Maori ” as meaning an “aboriginal inhabitant of New Zealand, and includes half-castes and their descendants by Natives”.

The Privileges Committee has inexplicably (yeah, right) found that the dead-set useless Jan Tinetti was not in contempt of Parliament, but has ordered her to “apologise for her “high degree of negligence” in misleading the House.”

So she misled the House in February, was told the same day by her staff that she was incorrect, and failed to correct her misleading statement until told she had to by the Speaker in May!

And they gave her a slap on the wrist with a wet bus ticket for not correcting the record quickly enough! she had no intention of correcting the record until she was told to do so – once again these useless Labour Ministers force us to decide if they’re incompetent, arrogant, entitled – or all three.

Of course, the elephant in the rom is that Tinetti knew all too well that what she was saying was a lie – she told the Ministry not to release the data, then told Parliament that it was nothing to do with her. She’s been pinged for not correcting a misleading statement quickly enough” but what about the original problem – the massive lie she told?

This campaign is shaping as the dirtiest in history, and the media is front and centre.

  Having a look at the stats suggests that the NZ Officer to Citizen ratio is about the same as most countries we’d see as our peers. UK has 10% more cops than us and USA about 20%. Canada has 10% less, but the cold probably keeps them indoors more.
  
  South Africa has almost double the cops we do, On top of that they then have 3x that again in private security (real security with semiautomatics – not just mall cops) and still their crime is way worse than ours.

What got me was the huge number of police at such a small gathering last Sunday. Well, compared with the paucity of police numbers that I saw on 26th March.

A nice example of the failings we’re seeing in government is what I experienced with deregistering a vehicle recently.

On 2 June I deregistered a vehicle and was told that there would be a refund for unused license and RUC, but allow 2 weeks.

After almost 3 weeks I emailed and asked about progress. They said I should have received a letter (I hadn’t) but if I emailed them the details they’d sort it all. I did so the same day and the nice lady I dealt with said the refund was teed up and I received the refund in my bank account the next day.

The letter I was supposed to have received sometime around 10 June? Well it arrived today! It was dated the same day as my interaction with the nice lady.

There still are some efficient people working in government departments, but they seem to be drowning in the sea of incompetence they are surrounded by.

BTW NZTA, or however you identify these days, still waiting for the clean car rebate that I applied for on 9 June. The nice lady I dealt with on 21 June checked and said all the information is there and properly lodged.

He was responding to a letter from Finance Minister Grant Robertson and Housing Minister Megan Woods instructing Kāinga Ora board chair Mark Gosche to begin a process of potentially stripping the council of control of urban development along the 24km light rail route from the central city to the airport.

Good on national for proposing to remove the RBNZs “sustainable house price” mandate.

This mandate directly conflicts with the RBNZs inflation mandate. As we all know, interest rates up = house prices down, and vice versa.

The interesting thing for me is the deception. If you have an observational mind, you will notice that the mandate is for “sustainable” prices. That means that the RBNZ not only has a mandate to prevent large house price rises, but also to PREVENT LARGE HOUSE PRICE FALLS.

If they wanted to ONLY prevent house price rises, they would have simply included house prices in the CPI calculations like we have in the past. Therefore, by logical deduction, the intention of the “sustainability” mandate, is to prevent house price falls.

Now you know why the RBNZ is unable to raise the OCR to an acceptable level to constrain inflation. If they do that, house prices will plummet, breaching the new mandate labour has imposed.
