    SA load shedding has reduced a lot as this year has progressed, but that is not a good thing.
    
    The reason load shedding has reduced is that the demand for electricity has gone down as electricity-dependent companies have just given up and closed their doors.
    
    Electricity demand is now about 25% less than it was 15 years ago with a much smaller population.
    
    This is of course hurting the ailing economy.
    
    Unemployment is around 40% and far higher amongst the hot-headed, and over-entitled, youth. These people are ripe for revolution. They are exactly the people that the EFF is targeting with their “kill the boer” stuff.

      My wife’s uncle’s small manufacturing business in Capetown has gone under because not only does “Load shedding” effect his business, if effects his entire supply chain.

        Yup, and there go another 20 to 50 jobs…
        
        There’s a massive chain reaction when a business closes:
        * If it is supplying other businesses, they might now close do to supply chain issues.
        * If it is being supplied by others, they might close because their customers have gone away.
        * One less bus driver required to drive the ex-employees to work.
        * The ex-employees no longer go down to the greasy spoon at lunch time for take aways. One burger flipper/ server has to be fired there.
        * One less courier driver needed.
        …
        
        It’s a real mess. And it can really only end one way.
        
        It is interesting that the US foreign affairs woman that always seems to visit just before arab spring type uprisings is currently (or was recently) in SA.

  Europe and Great Britain have invested many many millions of dollars on solar and wind. The fact of the matter is that when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining you get nothing from solar and wind. Here in Masterton this morning the wind isn’t blowing and there is very weak sunlight. But people still are going to want their hot showers, turn on the heat pumps, boil the jug and put bread in the toaster. So you need fossil fuel when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining.
  
  It seems that solar and wind are also very weak sources of energy. So without fossil fuel you are going to have blackouts? I think we are wasting money on solar and wind. We do need alternative sources of energy but they are not it. They are weak sources of energy and they are unreliable and intermittent. They produce electricity less than one half of the time. How can we run an economy on that?

    Sounds like wet-back wood fired ranges might be making a comeback. And perhaps we’ll go back to bath night once a week instead of twice daily long hot showers. I even heard someone suggesting mending clothes instead of throwing them away.

      In the olden days… I agree, but it seems that a large proportion of the population were never taught to sew (men and women alike) so have no idea even that clothes can be mended, let alone how to go about it.
      Maybe not weekly baths, but alternate days for showers and no showers over the weekend, as elderly people in rest homes are forced to endure, due to lack of staff. And that’s another story.

      Because it’s not about reducing emissions in itself and replacing existing generation and output with other “climate friendly” means, it is about emotionally manipulating people into accepting that they will have less and be able to do less, and that these reductions will be mandated by law. The manipulated “response” to the “Covid emergency” is no different in practical effect to the manipulated “response” to the “climate emergency.” They are both part of the same project to herd the credulous cattle towards accepting a control grid and greater systematic regimentation of their lives.

      If the world is “Boiling” one has to wonder why we haven’t embarked on a massive Nuclear expansion program.
      
      Around 2010/2011 here on Kiwiblog I ran an estimate that to replace the global coal-burning power stations that then existed with nuclear power stations the world would have to build eleven per month (assuming each one being twice the size of the average US nuclear fleet) for ten years.
      
      There was no sign of such a crash program then, nor is there today. And we’ve lost more than a decade and the global coal-burning has increased.

    This morning, Transpower indicated that wind was supplying about 1/10 of what coal/gas were. Sometimes it’s even less.
    Wind/Solar are OK I guess, but only if they compete with decent sources of generation on a level playing field, and don’t make our grid (more) fragile.

        Ask any live aboard yachtie about the struggle with generating enough power to charge their batteries, the on going maintenance of those batteries and having enough power to run even the least of what we have become used to to lead a modern life.   Remember the way they do the maths can make it warmer. They often use the average – really not a true average, just max plus min, divided by two. Frost in the morning with fine day afterwards may have a higher average than grey all day.
  That is disregarding those sites that used to be rural but are now urban with a heat island, and the adjusting downwards of the past by “corrections”

Ukraine war update…………
Well theres not much to say really. The Ukraine offensive continues to do not much. It seems that so far the Ukraine ground forces have not yet got over the first of the Russian defense lines. This is becoming a problem for Zelenskyy –
and will become a bigger problem – as hes not making any positive use of all the western aid that he has received.
Putin is in not much of a better position with the Russians suffering a few problems as a result of the drone attacks.
Putin has said – at the African summit hes hosting – that they are ready to talk but Zelenskyy says hes not ready to talk – yet.

Something that has come up is that Russia is starting to claim that the eastern areas of Ukraine that Russia is occupying and which is the area that Russia says is ‘part of Russia’, following so called referendum, is ‘Rusian territory’.
Combine this with the claim of a Russian figure that ‘attacks on Russian territory’ could result in the use of battlefield nuclear weapons – is a new approach.

Meanwhile the Ukraine continues to be wrecked, its infrastructure smashed up, Ukrainians displaced and killed, the grain export industry halted and more Ukrainians flee the country – all because Zelenskyy wants to join NATO.

But at the recent conference in Vilnius (I think) NATO said ‘drop dead – now is not the right time’ , and in fact it has never been the right time. NATO isn’t so stupid as to want WWIII.

Whats the prognosis then. Its most probable that the Ukrainian Offensive will go no where, the West will start turning off the aid supply (its not actual aid – its all a loan), Ukraine will not get back any of its lost territory and the big loser will be the Ukrainian people. And I would not be surprised if Zelenskyy finishes up a bit like Mussolini. These eastern Europeans get a bit nasty when they conclude that they’ve been lead up the garden path.

        Democracy now is when you agree with the mainstream propaganda to the detriment of critical thinking for yourself. Express an opinion counter to the prevailing fairy-tale (narrative) and you will be smeared, ostracised and “othered”.
        
        Democracy when it meant national sovereignty and independence with freedom to think, say and do within the legal confines of a functioning country and live life relatively free of a government which served the people…not so much.

  Ukraine has a big advantage in artillery range and accuracy and are knocking hell out of Russians in what has evolved into a withering attritional campaign, with added long-range drone and missile sapping of Russian logistics. Russians have no ability to prosecute any successful offense – they are being beaten back slowly along most of front taking big loses. Even more-so when they might show small occasional short-lived gains for a few days or weeks in some spot via desperate meat-wave offensives. Clearest evidence is rate of Russian artillery fire that has plummeted in recent times as their guns have been taken out and ammo is in increasingly short supply, as is fuel as rear bases are targeted and their logistical capacity shrinks.
  
  This is similar to last years Kherson campaign, where Russia held lines for months while being hammered until eventually they couldn’t sustain it any longer and collapsed back over the Dnipro.
  
  However Ukraine is unable to make break-through advances due to high-density mine fields anti-tank weapons and Russian helicopters hanging back from the front lines to target any massed force. They combine to wreck any focused armoured assaults. Slower creeping attritional warfare is really Ukraines only option, they’ve taken back maybe 500km² through this summer offensive as Russia has lost 100k troops, thousands of artillery and armour units trying to defend.

      Yep, saw some footage of Ukrainians in a minefield, many injured, and trying to be extracted by a couple of light APCs, like Bradleys.
      One guy jumped from the ramp, into a crater of exposed soil amongst all the grass – trying to reach the wounded. Made sense, to jump into a place where the mine had detonated as first step….but….Boom.
      Pixelation on the video, since his lower leg got blown off, and a bloodied person dragged back into the vehicle. Didnt even make it 3 feet. 🙁

  I feel like many people are confused about the war in Ukraine. Everything is actually going as planned. This is primarily an economic war perpetuated by the United States. Nato has been supplying sufficient old equipment to keep Ukraine in the fight, but not things that would let them push forward and win quicker (attack helis, fighters, longer range missiles, torpedos etc) and so increasing the loss of life horribly. Not making it possible for Ukraine to destroy the Kerch and Crimea-Kherson Bridges is unconscionable – that would wreck Russians southern logistics and their ability to fight with minimal loss of life.

Another shooting in Auckland last night – almost certainly gang related given the reference to red clothing.

The most disturbing thing for me is that the shooter reportedly “pulled out a gun”, suggesting the weapon was a pistol and not a rifle or shotgun; even a sawn off would be hard to hide in clothing.

Thank God they repealed that dreadful three strikes law eh!!

Completely off topic, what’s happend to Milky/Mikey/Mikenmild…has he been given a holiday, or has he stormed off in a huff again?

  This highlights a major issue with the police and media. Surely the fact that gang members were involved is a significant part of the story? But no, the media and police continue to hide gang involvement in crime, leaving the public to read between the lines to try and work out what really happened. This is clearly by instruction by the current government and reporters should be embarrassed to follow this edict. A true journalist would know they have ZERO reason to follow edicts from the government.
  
  The same issue exists for suicide reports. News reports say ‘xx suddenly passed away in their hotel last night, police do not consider the death suspicious’. We have learnt the code words that indicate it was a suicide however what about where someone actually did die suddenly and it wasn’t suicide? Bloody stupid reporting.

  There was time when a gangland brawl with two people being shot on the streets of Auckland CBD was a big story. This has gone from a “Police incident” with no details, no witnesses and no CCTV to a vague story without using any keywords (for future searching) of gangs, Maori or guns.
  Within two hours the story was relegated below a trial being called off and Trump news from yesterday.

    We need to distinguish between vulnerable and criminal. Vulnerable to me is people who have problems due to earlier trauma, chronic medical conditions, physical or intellectual handicaps, or mental illness. They are the people who, temporarily or permanently, need additional support to live in the community. Giving them that support is probably cheaper and better than putting them in institutions.
    
    Criminal, on the other hand, is people who destroy the public housing they’ve been provided with and intimidate neighbours. Those people need secure housing, built vandal proof, probably away from residential neighbourhoods and with some sort of controls over access and behaviour.

Noted an article by Audrey Young and a second by Hooten on possible cabinet position in a Nat/ACT government. Young’s suggestions were simply an insult – did she simply copy Luxon’s suggestions? Hooten was much more perceptive.

It is likely to be a very difficult negotiation despite the bonhomie between the leaders. The difficulty centres around reform – National dislikes change and ACT are all over it with bold ideas. Selecting cabinet posts will tell us where National will tolerate fundamental reform. ACT will want some core positions and they deserve recognition for often leading the public policy debates over the last six years. Expect a tough, toe to toe tussle.

Gawd help us if WP is in the mix.

      It was positive but I got the feeling it would not be likely. However, the more votes Act gets the more likely it could happen.
      
      It is my view that Luxon is an alarmist.
      
      I hope that Act could save some money if they gave a warning to all alarmists be them from the Climate Change Commission or NIWA that they will have to support their claims with evidence.
      
      They should be prepared to debate with Dr Curry, Dr Moore, Lomborg or any real experts.

        Unfortunately for you, I suspect, an employee of a Crown Research Institute (essentially a public servant) most likely would not be permitted to debate privately employed climate experts who advocate an alternative view (assuming they agreed to do so), even if he wanted to and thought he could “wipe the floor” with them.

Good to see Labour is in full election mode and trying to cover up their 6 years of failure

This mornings revelation on Hosking breakfast with a senior doctor was
– they have been instructed to issue surgery dates to all patients to show backlog is solvable by Xmas but the surgeries won’t actually happen as not enough capacity eg knowingly lying to patients
– to solve issues with surgeries being cancelled due to lack key functions they have just reduced capacity available to be booked so they can claim cancellations aren’t happening anymore

How can Labour and Whatu Ora get away with this

    I had been waiting for surgery for 3 years and and it was implied don’t expect it anytime soon. With a few days notice I was given a date. Last Friday done and dusted.
    I was wondering WTF happened there, not that I am complaining (now).
    After hearing that on Hosking this morning it all makes sense.

      Different surgeons do different surgeries. What I mean is my surgery is done by someone who does nerve surgery in the arm and hand. Not trauma surgery, that is left to the ‘plastic surgery’ people.
      The guy doing my arm does not even do rotor cuff surgery (which I need as well)

    We did. The plan was, shut the place tight until the ‘miracle vaccine’ came along.
    
    In the meanwhile, not a single cent spent on preparing the hospitals for any sudden increase in demand. Not a single word of advice to people about the steps you can take personally to ensure you are healthy and in a position to fight a potential infection.
    
    It’s almost as if they wanted as many people to get sick and die as possible. The policies they implemented ensured this would happen.

  All road signs in English but still required high levels of concentration navigating toll roads and fast moving semi’s.
  My mate in the car said he could only imagine what the drive would have been like if the signs were bi lingual!

The student-visa rort is back off the ground and flying again.

One of the topics on Red Radio this morning was foreign students for polytechnics.

A young Filipino said the reason he came to New Zealand rather than another country for Western education was the citizenship path.

What a mess. Hipkins has pushed our polytechnics into a highly expensive merger.

But that’s the lesser problem. The bigger one is that our post-secondary education is now focused on selling citizenship and has defaulted on educating New Zealanders — and on meeting the country’s work-skill needs.

With the world’s hundred million refugees and with billions of people who would enthusiastically move to developed countries, an intelligent New Zealand that felt it needed to sell citizenship would target the already highly educated and the already highly skilled.

Migration is a buyer’s market for developed countries.

And there’s no need cut in foreign recruitment agencies into sales of NZ citizenship.

    Not all immigrants are the same.
    Most countries are falling over themselves to attract high quality immigrants – except NZ which treats them like shit (it was way better when I came in 1992).
    
    NZ makes it relatively easy for low quality immigrants to get in and get on a pathway to residence/citizenship.

    No trial is rescheduled to allow the defense to prepare properly now that the Police have actually done what they are suppose to do – allow discovery of the evidence the prosecution will present…
    
    The Police Detective and the Evidence Custody Officer in this case should be severely censured. They botch it – lost evidence my arse! they were hiding stuff from the Defense and the Prosecution

Judge Andrew Becroft has aborted the trial of three people on a murder charge on a prosecution technicality.

He’s the former Children’s Commissioner who campaigned to raise the upper age limit for the Children’s Court from 17 to 18.

The then-president of the Police Association, Greg O’Connor (now a Labour MP) called the Becroft move “absolutely and utterly ludicrous”.

An NZ First MP, Ron Mark, at the time (2007)
had a private member’s bill before Parliament seeking to lower the age at which children could be prosecuted from 14 to 12.

Becroft’s position on youth court age looks more questionable with the plague of youth ram raids.

  But judges are pretty much given the keys to the castle. They can basically do what they want with very few restraints.

I remember when

Pediatricians back youth gender care, but call for a review: NY Times.
The influential American Academy of Pediatricians renewed its support for gender-affirming care of children, which is banned in 19 states.
At the same time, the doctors took the extra step of commissioning a review of research on the treatments.

Perhaps a lucrative alternative will result in a change.

The second formerly fit and healthy Brighton FC player to be forced to retire due to a heart condition.

The 22-year-old Belgian defender Lars Dendoncker announced last week that he was retiring from football due to a heart condition, thus making him the second Brighton player to retire because of heart problems in less than a year.

Dendoncker, the younger brother of Leander Dendoncker of Aston Villa and the Belgian national team, announced his retirement on Instagram, saying “this was and will be the hardest decision ever in my life” and that it “really hurts”. He was signed by Brighton & Hove Albion on a two-year contract in 2020 and played for the Scottish side St Johnstone for a year on loan.

Although Dendoncker has only now made his retirement official, he in fact already stopped playing football over a year ago after being diagnosed with myocarditis.

  The big issue with the myocarditis is that if you took the vaccine and didnt know it could damage the heart – as a pro athlete you keep training. So if the spike protein gets to the heart sac or the actual heart muscle and causes damage, the strain of hard physically training hits a the heart when its already under stress (damaged) – which can be fatal or cause long term issues.
  
  Protect advise on taking the vax and proper pot injection monitor would prevent the hard training aspect and protected these elite athletes

The Linwood legend, Tane Norton has passed away at 81. Captained the All Blacks to beat the British Lions in 1977, played 27 tests (consecutive) and 61 games for the All Blacks and 82 for Canterbury. Norton was educated in Methven and first played for Mid Canterbury in 1961 as a 19 year old.

Here’s why they’re having a hard time articulating the reason why vaccines cause myo/pericarditis. It’s a catch 22.

If they blame it on the spike protein, as Paul Offit recently did, then the question of lab leak becomes incredibly important. We need to understand why the spike is how it is and whether its origin was related to any bioweapons programs or similar.

If they blame it on the LNP or other core components of the mRNA platform, they’re throwing their cash cow under the bus and are risking untold billions in future revenue.

So they’re claiming they have no idea about the mechanism by which the vaccines are causing heart damage. Which, in any sane world, would act as rock-solid evidence that the manufacturer has no idea what its product is doing in the human body and trigger an instant recall.

  Tom Phillips is the 2023 version of George Wilder. He can survive on his own in the bush. Bit more of an effort with 3 children. I think the Police are not releasing certain bits of information – regarding the safety of the kids. No comment about his mental health from Police. Hope all ends well.

Working on contract for a major dept. Just got sent back to work-from-home due to a double-booking on the desk-space front. Turns out some regional honcho got the impression that the other lot were just our lot under the Maori name.
