If the Labour Party and Tova O’Brien from Stuff are so convinced that they are polling just as well or better than what other polling Companies are saying then , produce the Mills Talbot poll as you have to show it because we have been in this predicament before with Tova O’Brien and her bias bull shit and one eyed views.

  ACT says it will save $1 Billion from day one of governing. I say that is much too low a target. They and the Nats should do what the Lange Government did following the 1984 election. Ministers sat down with their Department CEOs and when thru not only the Budget but the previous years accounts line by line. The results are set out in Roger Douglas and Richard Prebbles book. Prebble found the Department of Education had used the unspent Budget to purchase so many school desks and chairs they had to rent a very large warehouse to store them. They had years and years of stock.
  When I was an Auditor in the late 70s I once audited a heavy machinery manufacturer and importer. I found invoices to the Ministry of Works dated the last day of the financial year that had been paid for that day for equipment that wasnt going to be supplied for months. When I asked the Accountant he laughed and said they did that every year to use up the unspent Budget so it didnt get taken off them the following year.
  I suspect that Budgets are being padded and the way to find out is to ask the CEO “What would be the worst case if I cancelled this expenditure and then divide the answer by a factor of 10 or 20 to get the real answer.

    New IT Boss(Colonel Fizz Lewis-ex army) ordered double amount of Computer equipment required working on theory that request would be halved) Kirk Government in the seat at the time.
    
    Lo and behold Rowling took over as PM and Minister of statistics and approved the lot.
    
    Poor old Fizz was hawking spare equipment around Government departments for quite a time as he had no space for all this equipment.
    
    Needless to say salesman at International Computers was a very happy man with his rather large commission cheque.

Same with barging into lanes (IE simply attempting to point a front corner of the SUV into a non existant gap and play chicken with the driver in the other lane). See it everyday.         Auckland was a dangerous place to use a bicycle decades ago.
        
        Melbourne is simply suicide for cyclists. People piled on top of each other and pissed off with the many roadworks and log jams. Many many moron bogans and entitled a-holes in “he-man” over sized wank wagons driving aggressively and many distracted drivers. Tons of trucks also. Pretty sure around at least one cyclist a week is killed and many many more seriously injured.
        
        Yet many cyclists act like they are breezing along in some flower filled lane somewhere in Amsterdam. The woke state govt seems to encourage this delusional thinking.

Italian Government thought they could impose a 40% windfall profits tax on Italy’s banks. This tanked their shares and the Government quickly pulled back. Lesson here for left wingers in UK, NZ, etc. Now in NZ, the Reserve Bank is effectively forcing shareholders to buy more bank shares through what is effectively a DRP (Dividend Reinvestment Plan) scheme. This is because banks have to reduce dividends to build capital for resiliance purposes. Surprise, surprise bank shareholders expect a return on this extra capital. Bank shareholders lose their money first if a bank goes down the gurgler.

        Pretty obvious that she has been able to buy property in the same way as any other family on their levels of income. As PM she was paid around $500,000. No doubt Clarke Gayford with his television shows would be getting north of $300,000. So take home pay of about $550,000. Five years of that should be enough to buy a house in Sandringham and a beach house in Tairua.

        Adern and her pals didn’t take these actions to get re-elected.
        
        It certainly wasn’t the right or noble course of actions.
        
        It certainly wasn’t to make NZ better place.

    Personal information, such as bank statements, are so far outside the scope of the Official Information Act that they might as well be on another planet.
    
    The only way to get private information like that is if you’re the Police, backed by a Court order. In which case you’d have to prove to a judge that you had probable cause for why you need that information.

It increasingly looks like China is in deep economic trouble. Their largest property developer, Country Garden, heading into bankruptcy. CG is 4x larger than the collapsed Evergrande that tipped up in 2021. Chinas local Govt loans are all dependent on property, so a potential tipping point in this obvious house of cards. China exports and domestic consumption also very soft. Along with high debt and plummeting population, the central control system must fail. It’s only a question of when not if.
Not good news for NZ’s largest trading partner.

We live rural on a property which sustains two small businesses.
For the past two weeks we have had no internet access – due to system failure.
(Am in town at present so can communicate.)
We get mail delivery three times per week which is currently under review by NZ Post – so this will be further diminished due to “no one getting or sending hard copy mail these days”.
We have increasingly erratic land line phone which is under threat because “no one uses land line phones now.” But, our land line has proved to be a life line as previous cell use came through the internet.
No internet also means no on-line bills can be paid because “no one wants to (or can) send a cheque through the mail.”
Online shopping/ ordering? No.
Inmates here have been obliged to look at TV “news” for information. That’s been an eye-opener.
What a slick, banal, slanted experience that has proved to be.
No wonder that a good proportion of the population have no real accurate knowledge of what is going on.
This is not a “poor me”. We will get back an internet connection. But we will have to work it out and get it ourselves.
That is the way it rolls for rural services.

    Steve, looking back at the past month, the only things I have taken out of my (physical) Mail Box have been:
    *Flyers from Real Estate firms
    *Letters – two of ’em, grrr – from Chippie telling me how wonderful he thinks his Government is performing
    *Supermarket junkmail.
    
    The last mail item of any value to me was from a letter from the Department of Justice agreeing with me that, at 71 and hard-of-hearing, I really ought not to have been invited by them to do jury service.
    
    All my bills are received – and paid – on-line…
    
    Small wonder that NZ Post are shutting down services … but times move on. Remember milkmen and/or coal deliverers?

  I live on a rural property 70kms out of town. Ironically today I’m getting wireless internet installed as my spark broadband (copper, our only option) is just getting slower and slower and slower. What’s happening is less and less people are using copper and with a massive decline in landlines it is becoming unviable for spark to maintain the lines. Whatever happens the service will never get better and only decline. Most of the new technicians nowadays are not even trained in how the copper networks work and are instead trained in Fibre and wireless making it harder for spark to even find technicians that can maintain the lines. Spark really don’t give a stuff about lightly populated areas and have done zero towards Fibre and wireless systems. I’m lucky a small local company has seen this opportunity and installed their own towers around the place otherwise I’d continue to enjoy the same level of service as you. Call me old but it doesn’t seem that long ago we were all screaming at spark to “unbundle” the network, a network that seems mostly unused and obsolete now and are in such a poor state I wouldn’t be surprised if spark just switched it off and write off their losses.

    Laying fibre, via ducted network, to folk that live 70km from an urban centre, is not a great idea for a private sector businesses.
    The Rural Broadband initiative, and other more recent rural connectivity builds, were/are being done with support ($$) from government.
    
    It is not the Telco companies ‘don’t care’ about rural communities, but that fibre past the front door of every person down every rural road or gravel track is not going to happen.
    
    User pays – price on application – is possible for fibre builds (same as any new property development). But when the laying of network is hundreds of thousands of dollars to even reach the premises – even if neighbours pitch in together – and the line rental for the wholesaler/network operator is tens of dollars a month you can surely appreciate why it is about as ‘fair’ to expect a landlord owed 100k by a former tenant to be happy with $10 a week repayments.
    It is not a viable model for anyone.
    
    There is a price to be paid for bucolic living environments. There is no lack of caring – but there is reality. Look at radio, Wireless or satellite options if copper ADSL is declining for you.
    FYI – I work in the industry, and some of my own colleagues live rural and struggle with such issues. You might need to drive further to the supermarket, or have poor broadband, but get a lungful of that fresh air!
    Pros and Cons. Nobody is a victim.

      Maybe have a meeting with the locals and a chorus UFB rep. See if you can get a UFB fibre to the locality (there may already be a fibre link feeding the locality for other purposes, which has sufficient spare capacity) then hook that data feed up to a nice high 4G tower for mobile data as the “last mile” to the house. Possibly unaffordable but worth checking. Failing that, there is somewhat expensive, somewhat limited in monthly data allowance (also prone to interference from heavy rain/cloud), is satellite internet. Some satellite services are prone to data “latency” which can cause delay on real time communication like voice and video calls. I believe Musk’s satellite internet service is fairly low latency (which is good).

This story may look trivial but it has a serious lesson about hate speech and wokeness. In the UK of course.

In summary… A 16 year old autistic girl gets drunk and out of hand. Hardly the first time that has happened. A family member calls the police. Police arrive and try to reason with her.

Autistic girl tells female police officer “You look like my lesbian nana”. Police officer goes nuts. Autistic girl gets dragged away by several officers, charged with homophobic hate speech.

I have seen video of the event. It looks horrific. (It has been taken down)

This girl should have been attended by paramedics, not the police. She is autistic and vulnerable. She had not committed any crime as far as I can tell. But she told a female police officer that she looked like a lesbian granny and that got her dragged off and arrested.

This is where these hate speech laws can lead.

  This will allow those who, a few years ago would have been diagnosed as mentally ill, to dictate how society must align itself.
  
  When something as fundamental as how we define a woman is now up for individual interpretation, and done so under threat of sanction if a person is deemed to have transgressed, then we know things have gone too far.

Terry was found not guilty because it was impossible to determine whether he was racially abusing Ferdinand or speaking words that had been spoken by others.

  This is where the social justice zealots make life a misery for everyone. In a heated football match there will be insults. But it’s a man’s game (sorry ladies). And men should be able to speak their mind. I’m not a fan of the language. But a realistic view of human nature knows that these things will occur in competitive environments and give them a pass.
  
  We need to fight back against Wokery. As I have often said it is an alternative religion for those that have abandoned Christianity but still want to think of themselves as good people.

  And even then you must consider the context that alleged hate speech is said.

  However -drunk person going feral, I dont care if they have mental health issues or are on the spectrum or not. Kicking and screaming for police = sympathy rating at ZERO.
  Police should be able to get hands-on with out of control people.
  The only issue I have is the charge being hate speech.
  Truncheon coming down between the eyes, wrenching limbs, dragging out by a fold of skin is all good.

  Cops have got a significant problem under UK law over this. In their statement moaning the video doesn’t give the full context, they say the girl was arrested on suspicion of a homophobic public order offence.
  Unless they and the CPS can find some other offence, they will fail to get a conviction on three fronts before you even get into the argument of the girl’s intent and whether she was being criminally offensive or she said it due to her disability.
  1) It happened in her own home, not in public
  2) No member of the public was near-by to hear the comment and feel alarmed, threatened or harassed by it. Her family won’t count and can’t see them giving evidence for the cops they were upset if they were called as witnesses
  3) That just leaves the cops at the scene and there’s well established case law police officers have a much higher threshold than ordinary members of the public before they can be victims of a public order offence. The girl’s words go nowhere near that threshold – often swearing at a cop isn’t enough

    Their usual MO is to hide the comments against their narrative in the middle of their list and all the ones that are pro their narrative are at the beginning and end so that no matter how you sort (oldest or newest), the negative comments are lost in the middle.
    
    They also tend to have the same names crop up in the comments section of political pieces being pro Labour, but I have kept away from $tuff comments for some weeks now and a lot of the regulars have changed account names.

Was watching AM Show this morning, Ginny Anderson and Erica Stanford Friday chat.

During the discussion around the new bill being pushed through Parliament regarding additional support/counselling for crime victims Ginny clarified that the bill meant a wider group of victims would be eligible for assistance.

Then she said victims of sexual assault would then be able to get counselling “JUST LIKE SERIOUS CRIMES”.

I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who have been sexually assaulted that would not be impressed that our current Police and Justice Minister doesn’t consider they were victims of a serious crime.

This is just appalling.

I emailed AM Show to ensure that they were aware of what was just said, I don’t know whether they will revisit the video footage, maybe they’ll just delete it from their website.

No matter how unsuitable a person is to represent people in Parliament if he/she gets enough people to go along with his/her policies then he/she gets elected. So the biggest political snake-oil salesman is milking the crowd – just as the other parties are doing, to get their votes.

Maybe Winston as Maori Affairs and Shane Local Government.

No doubt most of you will have read the Taxpayer Union’s (TUs) way ahead for the replacement of 3Waters legislation.
IMO, it’s great but will it be given any form of acceptance by any political party? Whilst the TU wants to punt their plan as a ‘People’s Bill’, I doubt that will see the light of day.

The charge should have been more than a common assault charge. The POS claimed he hit this woman three times in the face because he feared she would hit him. The police refused to protect the women and have told Kellie-Jay Keen they will not protect her or any woman that come to hear her when she comes to a court for the hearing of the man who allegedly assualted her.

  A good question. I think there is a combination of factors
  
  1. Youth. When young you tend not to use the health services unless after an accident or for maternity – and those cases get admitted acutely, while other older patients get sent home at 2 a.m. (recent case in Wanganui just the tip of the iceberg) or sent home to wait again for surgery.
  
  2. Ignorance. The PJIF has been consistently used to tell NZers that National is responsible for any and all problems with the racist, underfunded, supremacist neocolonialist health system that Labour inherited a few, what, months ago – and Labour need time to make its neoapartheid health care changes work out so be kind, comrades.
  
  3. Ghosting. It is rare that the MSM publish more than the occasional episodic health care systematic failure – so people tend to believe these are one-offs rather than the new routine, and that these occasional episodes show the media can be trusted.
  
  4. Coverup. “Election 2023: Minister of Health ‘disappointed’ no new waiting list data before election.” Of course you are Dr V.
  
  5. Asphyxiation. Multiple OIAs for health care issues have been denied.
  
  6. Emigration. People who would have stayed and fought but lost their NZ jobs under the vax mandate needed to have an income to pay their bills, so have left to get jobs overseas.

After she had been in hospital for an excessively fast heartbeat for hours? (All info in the newspaper).
      
      Well if that makes sense, then sense is not what it used to be.

        You might be surprised at how many use ED as a B&B. Sure their are cases like the one you mentioned but usually taxes are provided, or an ambulance or there is assurance that caters will look after. But granny dumping is still a thing at holiday time where granniy is brought to the hospital because the family caring for them wants to go away for the weekend. I wouldn’t be too worried about New Zealand First getting into parliament or not.
There is no way Peters will go into a Labour/Green/Maori/NZF coalition.
National/Act can happily form a minority government and have NZF on the cross benches.
They only need to get a “confidence and supply” agreement from NZF by agreeing to some “policy wins” and maybe ministers outside cabinet.

A more interesting scenario is NZF getting 4.9% of the vote.

NZFirst could be responsible for the country retaining the present group of incompetents if he came in at 4.9% or if he goes over 5% and then decides he has had to change his mind and put Hipkins back in the driving seat. Leopards don’t change their spots.

Which ever way you cut it if NZFirst are near the levers of power we face uncertainty and disruption. Their populist brand of politics has no place in a situation where strong, decisive decision making over the next 3 to 6 years is critically important.

  He’s also picking up on the concern many have re the deal with Blackrock, to date, I haven’t heard much opposition from the other parties?

  He may be insincere, but he’s getting his oxygen from these three areas. Particularly the ‘freedom’ movement.

“Net-zero” refers to the goal of reducing emissions to the extent possible, and balancing any remaining emissions which cannot be eliminated.

McKinsey tries to answer those questions, based on a hypothetical scenario to achieve net-zero emissions by around 2050 developed by the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS), a group of 105 central banks and financial supervisors.

“In economic terms, spending on physical assets on the course to net-zero would reach about US$275 trillion by 2050, or US$9.2 trillion per year on average, an annual increase of US$3.5 trillion. To put it in comparable terms, the US$3.5 trillion increase is equivalent to about half of global corporate profits, one-quarter of total tax revenue, and 7 percent of household spending.

  1. Calculate how many tonne of CO2 must be eliminated to reduce concentration by 1 ppm.
  2. Calculate the cost of the latest pet project in terms of cost per 1 ppm.
  3. Then let the country decide:
  EITHER
  we build a new hospital in every city, fill every pothole and complete every motorway
  OR
  go ahead with the latest project to reduce CO2.
  
  Also, bearing mind, reducing CO2 by 1ppm will have no effect on the climate.

  I’m sure that if I was still in business and came up with an excuse like this, I’d be laughed out of the building by those gathered around the Coffee Jug/Water Cooler.
  To deprive people of their entitlements because it’s too difficult to fix the problem is simply gross.

This is pathetic. I know Timaru hospital has sent ED staff to Wellington when they needed staff, to Christchurch when their anaesthesiologist resigned.

Due to the nationwide doctors shortage, “a single solitary doctor simply cannot be found anywhere within Te Whatu Ora” to avoid overnight closures over the weekend at Ōamaru Hospital, the district health service chief executive says.

Chief executive for the Waitaki District Health Services Keith Marshall said Ōamaru Hospital Emergency Department would close its doors on both Saturday, August 12, and Sunday, August 13, from 5pm until 8am.

Parliament’s new ‘Te Kāhui Mōuri’ unveiled last month cost about $500,000.

The pricetag has been criticised by the ACT Party’s leader David Seymour. He has called it “tone-deaf” during a cost of living crisis when Kiwis are “being asked to tighten their belts”.

“It’s about 30 average workers’ taxes for a whole year or one average worker’s taxes for 30 years to put up a couple of pou,” he said.

Sunday is the day Hipkins will announce his plan to destroy NZ’s much-applauded GST system, in a last-ditch, desperate attempt to hang on to power.
National Radio today announced this would be hugely popular, despite it being against all advice from economists, his own Finance minister, and anyone who understands how valuable a simple, broad taxation system is.
Once destroyed, it will be virtually impossible to put the genie back in the bottle.
Hipkins is nothing better than a vandal. A ram-raider desperate to cling on to power at any cost to our country.
He deserves to go down in a crushing defeat that tells his Party we will never again put up with this ‘win at all costs’ behaviour.
