Election 2023: Labour would have to double key welfare promises to account for inflation.
It looks like Grant Robertson is under great pressure and Labour are pushing new policies through that haven’t been costed correctly Giving National the opportunity to show the public how out of there depth Labour and the Finance Minister are.
If this was National Leader Chris Luxon the drums would be beating and the statements would be loud about you can’t trust National with the books if you look at the costing.

      I agree. Let Luxon stick to talking points. He is not as experienced at the dance with journalists as Seymour is.
      So stick to them – simple messages, repeat, and dont get drawn out on distractions or gotchas which their questions often attempt.
      It is the right plan for Luxon, and let the skewering of journalists be done by others.
      One needs to dog paddle, and keep head above water when thrown in the pool. The other can be doing the backstroke.

    I think one of Luxon’s problems is that he has been a CEO.
    
    CEOs can command yes-boss/no-boss obedience from the people they engage with and an expectation that they are in control. This gives them a very distorted view or the world.
    
    In the real world politicians need to move in, the shoe is on the other foot. We are their boss. They must shut up and listen.

    I hope he’s right, but I doubt it.
    
    While people may not be drawn to Hipkins, they don’t have that absolute hate for him like they did for Andy Little. They will hold their noses and vote for Hipkins while they were reaching for the vomit bucket when thinking about voting for Little.
    
    Heck, Little wasn’t even on those buddy-buddy posters with electorate candidates – the first time that was seen for Labour or National.
    
    And Andy was still well on the way to score 26%.

      I hope he’s right, but I doubt it.
      
      I doubt it, too. In fact, he can’t be right: he’s just having a larf.
      
      For one thing, he is saying that 12 of the 18 registered parties are going to receive no Party votes, whatsoever. In other words, his percentages are all effective Party percentages. (To participate in the allocation of List seats, a party must receive 5% of the Party vote – not 5% of the effective Party vote – or win one electorate seat.)
      
      His percentages give the following seat allocation: National 47, Labour 24, ACT NZ 24, Greens 13, Te Pāti Māori 6, and NZ First 6.
      
      In other words, with a combined 71 seats to National and ACT NZ, Sir Bob is predicting a near reversal of the 2020 election (where Labour and the Greens received a combined 75 seats).
      
      Such an outcome can occur under the unlamented FPP electoral system, but would be very unlikely under MMP. That is because, with FPP, a small change in votes for the two main parties can indeed lead to a reversal in seats won. (Compare the result of the 1975 election with that of the 1972 election.) Under PR/MMP, changes in Party vote percentages will result in equivalent changes in seat allocations.
      
      Also, beware what you hope for. Do you really want 24 ACT NZ MPs, when 18 (plus 47 for National) would give the NACTs a comfortable majority? For one thing, those candidates at the lower end, especially, of both Lists won’t all be of the finest quality, that’s for real. If the NACTs finish up with more the 70 seats, party discipline would possibly be at risk (as we have seen with Labour and the Greens over the last 12 months), which would likely result in an interesting second half of the next Parliamentary term.
      
      The next 59 days are going to be great fun.

  We are told that NZ pays the world price for its Dairy products. I know that we are talking milk powder here but if global demand is down and supply in other countries is up, when can we expect to see drops in dairy prices and foods produced using milk powder here?
  
  If Fonterra is struggling might I suggest dropping prices here to lift demand in NZ? I am sure many families have reduced dairy intake due to the extreme prices.

      4 litres of milk makes about 0.8 kg of white cheese and about 0.3 kg of Ricotta and takes about 2 hours to make. Mild cheese will require somewhat more and takes longer to make. Don’t know what cheese factories pay for milk, but it costs me $5.79 for 2 litres, the cost of rennet and calcium chloride is negligible as they last for a very long time. The cost of power is about 50 cents per batch and bacterial cultures are home made and their cost is also negligible. My labour is free and there’s no opportunity cost as I’m semi-retired. So, $18 per kilo of factory made mild cheese looks just about right.

        My Dad worked in a cheese factory when I was a kid (Te Kowhai)
        I spent a lot of time watching the process. Once made the cheese was stores in the chiller for 12 to 18 months. There is the cost factor.
        Best part was each worker was allowed to take some cheese home – just what they needed back then. Honesty.

        We make a lot of cheese of various varieties. We are lucky in that we get 15 litres of free full cream jersey milk straight from the cow when it’s the season. If it wasn’t for that it wouldn’t be worth the trouble other than it’s become a hobby for the wife. It’s great fun expiramenting to. Best one to date is Leicester spiced with loads of pepper.

    New Zealand consumes less than 7% of our dairy production last I looked. However giving supermarkets higher profits for dairy along with the extra 15% from GST on fresh fruit and vegetables does seem fair, I hear they’re only making about 17% return on investment.

On queue, Bryce Wilkinson published an analysis of Ireland’s success. A focus on excellent education, productivity, and the attraction of foreign capital are key drivers of Ireland’s success.

IRELAND”S SUCCESS DRIVERS ARE ALL REPLICABLE!

Ireland’s membership of the EU is an advantage but the fact Ireland outperform their EU compatriots clearly demonstrates EU membership isn’t the mainstay for Ireland’s success.

  Unfortunately for New Zealand’s ability to replicate Ireland’s success Mark, the key asset that the Irish have is educated people .
  
  The Irish teachers are chosen from the top 25% of graduates.
  
  New Zealand teachers tend to be from the bottom 25% of graduates.
  
  Factor in the difference in educational standards used to educate these graduates and the Irish system is streets ahead.
  
  New Zealand has the potential, but to achieve it we first need a generation of top quality teachers and then a generation of motivated students able to be educated.
  
  At the moment we have neither.

    Be realistic.
    New Zealand is lucky to get $4 or $5 billion a year in overseas investment now, mainly because of contractual commitments .
    That’s because most people know that NZ is an economic cot case.
    
    Don’t take it as an insult to NZ, use it as helpful criticism.

      That GDP figure is massively distorted by the fact many overseas companies are based in Ireland for low tax reasons – remove these amounts from the mix and you get a much lower GDP per capita figure. Google Ireland a tale of two economies.

  Please note that Ireland’s figures are based on the multinational whims who pay little or no tax and overinflate the GDP. Yes Pzifer and Intel and other entities provide jobs in Ireland but recently they along with Facebook made around 10% of their workforce redundnant.
  
  Ireland without the multinational investment is not particularly advanced in their own development, manufacturing and skills.
  
  There is a housing crisis though different to NZ’s. The average rent is 2 to 10 times higher than a relatively average mortgage on a 3 bedroom house. At times there are less than a thousand dwelling in the whole of Ireland available to rent and no hotel, Air B&B or other options that don’t house asylum seekers, Ukrainians and the very few tourists who are lucky enough to get them left.
  
  As for health , in Ireland you have to pay in public not only private, the system is very close to the USA.
  
  The country cannot build fast enough. The bureaucracy and slowness of the government departments is a thing of Orwellian beauty. It takes months to get tax numbers, almost a year to find a GP and there are changing tax laws constantly.
  
  The largest employer is administration staff in the health sector who out number actual medical practitioners by 10 to 1.
  
  Ireland is educated however it is a class system based on academic achievement not work experience.
  
  It is far from the worst but far from the best.

    Ireland now has the advantage of an increasingly better educated workforce and a business friendly environment.
    
    Those factors will not go away so expect to see more investment and wealth growth in Ireland.

Has an interesting chat to a mate of mine, he’s in the civil contracting business up north. I asked him what the go was with the Dome Valley road works, why were they taking so long?
His reply astounded me: he claims that the contractors were never held to a fixed-price contract. Instead, they’re just charging it up. The original price estimate was $32m, so far it’s cost well over $90m…

Maybe this also explains the state of SH1 north of Warkworth – it’s just horrendous. There seems to be no incentive to repair the roads properly at all. It’s highly embarrassing to have tourists drive on it the way it is, and pretty dangerous. I was appalled at it. Thanks, Labour.

On the topic of flood/cyclone damaged homes….

I know a couple of families whose homes have been badly damaged in the cyclone floods, and insurance has said ‘no more’ to them. Their homes are unliveable. Have a read:

The Auckland property: the previous owner/developer wanted to build a two-story house in an expensive suburb, but the height to boundary restrictions prevented it. So, he literally dug the ground down enough until the house would comply. So this house now sits about 2-3 feet below the road and below the surrounding properties. That particular area is quite low-lying as it is, so when it rains heavily this property just becomes a pond, with flood waters going right through the house. Multiple times. Oh, it’s also on an overland flood zone…
The current owner is now too devastated to go back, or to attempt any remediation. They’re going to walk away from it and hopefully sell it for whatever they can get for it.

The Northland property: nice rural lifestyle block with a modern home on it. The recent floods went right through the house, wrecking it badly. The local postie, an old lady who has been doing the area for decades, said she wasn’t surprised – that spot used to be a dam. She couldn’t understand why a house was allowed there.
The owner has no idea what he’s going to do. Currently renting elsewhere.

How do the respective councils sleep at night, knowing that they have allowed things like this to happen??

  We owned a farm east of Masterton that had the Taueru River on one boundary it could rise thirty feet and we accepted that as part of the price of good water. Mitigating its dangers was our responsibility entirely.

    Well the thing is, most people aren’t experts in this stuff, and we used to be able to trust our local councils. In times gone past we could safely assume that if the council approved it, then it was all good. And that was generally true back then. (I’m talking 40+ years back)
    
    But now you simply cannot trust local councils any more. From signing off leaky homes to approving new builds in flood plains… common sense has left the council building.
    And it’s taking the population a while to wake up to this fact.
    
    Whenever I look at a property, the first thing I now look at is where it is located in relation to the lie of the land. The second thing I look at is the cladding. But we shouldn’t have to. We should be able to trust the governing bodies. Alas, no longer.

They banned an effective treatment for profit. How many people died unnecessarily because they could not access medicine? People like Bloomfield need to face trial over this.   The ruble has depreciated 40% this year alone, hence, the large increase in interest rates by the central bank. The ruble broke through the 100:1 against the USD but has pulled back a little but will continue to fall. So if you think 12% is a good return that has to be offset by a falling ruble. There is nothing to suggest that the downward trend will stop even with large interest rate increases.

Dr. Alison Goodwin had her practising certificate removed and has been required to attend a 12-month “re-education” programme after she advocated for informed consent in 2021 as the Covid-19 vaccines were being rolled out in New Zealand

Punished for doing her job properly. For advocating for informed consent!

In 2021 as the mRNA vaccine rolled out, Dr Goodwin simply adhered to MCNZ’s pre-existing Statement on Informed Consent, rather than its new Guidance Statement. She started speaking about risks, alternatives and uncertainties (as required for true informed consent) since the public messaging was only about purported benefits of the covid vaccine.

The NZ Medical Council should be under investigation and Dr Curtis Walker, head of NZMC should be under investigation for deliberatey distorting information in repeated inaccurate attempts (lies) to keep smearing Dr Goodwin.

I wonder what his payout is for these actions? At the very least Dr Goodwin should be substantially compensated and Walker should be stepping down for being completely inept at his job.

“It is reassuring that the courts have found again (as in each of our three challenges so far) that the actions of the MCNZ were unlawful. Yet again, they are told that suspending a doctor is not an appropriate response to speech the MCNZ disagrees with,” said Dr de Villiers. She is spokesperson for NZDSOS.

A great victory. Here’s hoping it is the start of many more so we can focus on sorting this country out. There’s much to be done.

Hopefully Luxon and Seymour are paying attention. Haven’t seen any comments from either yet on this massive decision and admission of wrongdoing.

  Megan Woods is 100x worse as she twists and turns and too often seems to get the better or the equal of Mark through bullishness and bullshittery.
  If you thought Ginny was coming on strong compared to that, take another listen or get a second opinion.
  A couple of times Ginny even laughed in a light hearted way, until the very end bit around gun crime.
  So jeez, don’t dail it up to 11.
  Not a Ginny fan but she was just like a school girl compared to the much stronger personality of Megan.

I just watched a 5 minute interview of Chris Luxon on Stuff. I could hardly hear the questions but they must have all been about National not supporting the GST removal. He repeated the same answer over and over again. Why don’t the media accept his first answer and move on? Remember the definition of stupidity? In this case asking the same question over and over again and expecting a different answer. He patiently stuck to his viewpoint, over and over again.

Of Shaneel Lal and the Kiwibank awards …

Controversial (to put it lightly) Shaneel Lal is a speaker at a “Word” festival in Christchurch supported by the City Council. Dan Carter’s book will be promoted there, too, so the festival’s not 100 per cent Leftist and Woke.

Lal is described in promotion as “2023 Young New Zealander of the Year”, but many of us mentally fill in this title as “Kiwibank 2023 Young New Zealander of the Year”.

At the link at the bottom of this post you can read the “NZ’er of the Year” awards, described there as the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year awards (plural), and that’s how most of us know them. However, the Young New Zealander of the Year award, including the latest, Lal’s, is promoted under the title University of Canterbury Young New Zealander of the Year.

Kiwibank’s name is retained in the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year award and Kiwibank Local Hero of the Year award. Sponsors for other awards in the group include, Spark, Mitre 10, and Ryman Healthcare.

But can Kiwibank distance itself it from Lal in people’s minds?

Who have Kiwibank’s (purely Kiwibank) New Zealander of the Year awards gone to?

In 2023 it’s Rangi Matamua, who lectures in Maori astronomy. He’s is described as the man behind the Matariki holiday – or in the bank’s words, the Matariki celebration. In 2022, it was Tipene O’Regan, leader of Ngai Tahu in its Treaty settlement claims. In 2021, it was Siouxie Wiles, of Covid notoriety and one of the instigators of the open letter criticising the Listener 7 – the scientists who questioned whether Maori knowledge is science.

Nominations are now open for what the organisers call the 2024 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards. The use of “awards” in plural rather than “award” links of all them to Kiwibank, thus including Lal’s.

This year’s nominations close on August 31.

  Yes, seems a lot of people are scrambling to claim Matariki as they’re brain child. One of them must be right because as I’ve posted previously the word “Matariki” did not appear in about 12 editions of the Raupo Maori dictionary between 1958 and 2011. Was that sexual violence and physical violence all committed by the government and the system? I’m thinking most of it was committed by rellies and criminals in the community.

And I’m really surprised only 90% have said they have witnessed violence. I am surprised it isn’t 100%. Drive by a fight and you’ve witnessed violence.

The problem with these sorts of survey is that they are intended to find a certain conclusion and will invite people to use the most broad definitions of violence etc. They don’t really provide any information at all. Still cost us a bundle though.

Waste Management Chemical Engineer Timothy Brake said “we can’t recycle our way out of the Climate Crisis”.
Recycling a plastic bottle into meat trays, for example, he says delays the disposal of the plastic drink bottle by about a couple of weeks, also said a small fraction of our rubbish is recycled,
and when it is, it is often a mere delay to it ending up in landfills shedding microplastics in the environment in the process.

Just heard Nicola Willis interviewed on The Platform. She was asked whether biological women should be allowed to compete in women’s sport. Answer: “National has no position on that.”

Of course there is only one sensible answer. Internationally, the governing bodies for athletics, swimming and cycling have all made the right decision. More sports will follow.

However it is not just at the elite level this is a problem. It is a problem at school and club levels.

I understand Nicola Willis. The debate on transgender issues is now utterly toxic. If she had told Sean Plunkett that trans women should be barred from competing in women’s sports, she would have been in the headlines in the New Zealand media. “Nicola Willis transphobic.”

Sanity will prevail on this issue. But there is a way to go. Chances of New Zealand politicians showing leadership? zero.

I listened to the interview, and while on a personal level I would have liked her to take a more definitive line in her response, I accept it is 2023 and National are not only up against 3 opposition parties trying to take them down, but the majority of our media have the same agenda.
      They just need to keep their heads down until Oct 24.
      We need to leave it to ACT to set the agenda for the centre right, that’s just the way it works under MMP unfortunately.

    If you were to adopt such a stance at any public facility in New Zealand in relation to a trans woman you would be banned from the facility. You may be named, doxxed, and have your career destroyed.

      I understand we have norms in society, and this is really what this is about. We live in societies where people are herded into different rooms depending on their body parts.
      
      Why should anyone really get upset if the person changing in the room with them has different bits of meat hanging off their bodies?
      
      How is that really different to a skinny person dressing next to a fat person or a black person changing next to a white person?

    The last thing any sport needs is the government deciding how they run their sport.
    It is bad enough that organisations like FIFA can butt their way into local competitions.
    As much as is humanly possible, local sport should be run by local members who are responsible to the local community.
    The local community will ensure that officials are promptly corrected and made aware of the consequences any stupid decisions.
    Few sports can afford to watch their numbers drastically reduce.

        The athletics records of East German women in the 1980s still stand.
        
        Notably, Marita Koch still holds the 400 metres record, set in 1985, and which may never be broken. Certainly nobody has come close.

The whole bunfight over trans athletes in women’s sports events got me thinking a bit last night: why are there so many women’s sports?

Sure, I get that men are generally stronger/heavier/faster so it makes sense to have special women’s categories for sports where these are a major factor (running, swimming, shot put, boxing,…)

But then there are a bunch of sports which are more skills based and strength does not matter (or matters very little). For example darts. You don’t need strength to throw a dart. Weight isn’t an advantage. Nor height (well not much). So why the need to give women a special category?

Same for target shooting. Women and men perform about the same with the same equipment, so why even split the sport?

Yet only a few sports do this (eq equestrian). Why?

Dickason is guilty of murder. From the beginning, I thought this is how it would go.

It is easy to assume that if someone is seriously mentally ill, they bear reduced or no responsibility for their actions.

In reality, it is possible to for someone to be mentally unwell, even severely unwell, yet still understand the difference between right and wrong.

Lauren Dickason was mentally ill. But she knew she was killing her children, and knew it was wrong. That was revealed by her actions before and after the murders, and comments she made in interviews with police. There was clearly premeditation, revealed by her Google search history many weeks before the killings.

At the end of the day though, the verdict is somewhat irrelevant. There was never any question that Lauren Dickason was the perpetrator, and mental illness was the driver of her actions. Nothing will bring those girls back, and Dickason will be a broken shell for the rest of her life. It’s a tragedy for the whole community.
