I’m feeling excited about National and Nicole Willis delivery of there tax policy today and how Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and Finance Minister Grant Robertson will try to discredit it.
You can’t forget how Nicole and National have embarrassed Labours brain trust already this year by announcing bad policy that Labour gambled on to win this election.
I think Nicole Willis has been a breath of fresh air for National this year especially with the continued criticism and hate on Luxon from the Media and Labour Politicains, so for one are hoping they have this tax policy right and can shove it in the fiscal hole that Grant Robertson wants people to find.
If National and Nicole have this policy
right Bob Jones talk of a land slide to National and Act might start rumbling and become a reality tonight.

  Heard Luxon on the radio with Hodking, he suggested it could be a $100 a week for mid nz, I presume they weee discussing the tax cut, he ruled out Labours digital tax saying that is not part of it, he also said it would start next year, after Robertsons budget time frame finishes on June 30 Newshub and Labour thi k they have snookered Nats by their digital tax that was promised 5 years ago and obviously has not been started even though I think everyone thought it has.

    I must admit to an interest in the tax details. It reminds me of the excitement budgets used to hold before announcements. I bet most Labour MPs will be sitting around the radio in expectation as well.

      Yes, I was just thinking that there seems to be more interest, expectation, hype, and excitement around what National are releasing today, compared to any announcement from Labour.
      Suddenly Labour look very tired and empty, while National look strong and very much ready to govern.

  Agree. I am, however, a little disappointed that National plan new taxes to pay for their tax cuts. Seems counter intuitive to me, isn’t the idea to reduce tax burden and for the govt to do more with less? I guess I will wait and see what they are 🙂
  
  My money is on one of them being a ‘tourist tax’, probably some sort of arrival / departure tax.

    A worker will not be paying any new tax, they have stated this clearly, let’s wait and see what it is, they also said it won’t be inflationary, just maybe they have found something, they looked pretty pleased with them selves on tv last night

  We know bright line will go from 10 to either 5 or 2 years.
  We know interest deductibility will be reinstated.

  As expected – Nats Tax plan all a bit Ho-Hum…
  
  Obviously better than Labour (low bar), but…
  
  1. Only $1 Billion a yr decrease in Govt spending, so the same as Robertson. Which means a $55 billion increase in spending compared to Bill English.
  2. Only a marginal change to tax brackets. So compared to 2010 when they were last adjusted, the Nats plan to keep ripping us off.
  3. Returning some ($600 million) ETS revenue back to taxpayers as a dividend. So tax fuel companies, who pass that tax cost onto tax payers, then give the tax collected back to taxpayers….. is that what “they” mean by circular economy? Just bonkers! How much slippage and cost to all this nuttiness??
  
  The sad thing is, the Nats sounds so much better than Labour – but it’s actually still bonkers socialism.

    Maori preference for health services is a breach of the Hyppocractic Oath if any Health Professional applies it. Government services preference for Maori is a breach of Article 7 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights which NZ is a signatory.
    I have already posted how my cancer specialist told one of Health Department oiks to FOX TROT OSCAR when he was told he had to preference Maori. I understand most of his colleagues have told the Departmentr the same.

      I suppose that if your employer (government) makes you apply a racial bias in your daily work it cannot be you breaching your Oath. You can protest, and treat everybody the same irrespective of race or religion but it is not your choice who gets priority. This is like apartheid South Africa’s Supreme Court judges where SA mandated certain penalties for various crimes, like the death penalty for black on white rape, they would add their protest when reading out the proscribed sentence.       I am starting to think it won’t be close for the first time ever, the 5 electorate polls I have seen now has Labour mainly in the teens, one has them at 20%. Those polls I have seen has Northland, Napier, Tukituki, Ilam and I hav been made aware today they Waiwarapa will also see the little gnome thrown out. All 5 electorates are Labour, and all will go to Nats by far

    I noticed while driving from Greytown to Featherston yesterday that every bill board of Act and National had been seriously vandalised. The tolerant left at work. On the other hand there was no damage to Labour ones this being largely because there aren’t any lol. Do these morons honestly believe that cutting the faces and messages out of posters will sway people to their cause when it’s such an overt attempt at censorship. A moustache or such juvenile scribbling is one thing but the violence with which these have been destroyed speaks volumes about the minds that are responsible. Bring on the election

    Tony S: I admire Mr Mitchell for saying that, but he is taking a big risk of having egg all over his face – and here’s why.
    
    Cuddles is the present Police Commissioner, and neither Mitchell nor any other poli can sack him simply for not achieving targets – such as to reduce crime by X amount in Y time.
    
    Secondly, Cuddles and those who report to him will genuinely believe that what is required is more pandering to crims (aka “wrap around support”) not less. To expect him to change his mindset is like expecting me to suddenly realise I am wrong, and join the Green Party.
    
    Thirdly, Cuddles and his politburo will between them have fuck all – if any – front line policing experience, so their belief that “there is some good in everyone” – rather like that stupid judge who thought there were “kernels of hope” in a vile POS who severely beat an old man – will be impossible to shift.
    
    As I have said a number of times here, my most potent memory of my short political career is a visit to a youth justice facility in Canterbury – conveniently right next door to the Big House. Talking to some inmates – and more importantly to the staff – it was quite clear that by age 14 or 15 it is waaay too late to correct “values” learned in a gang house.

        Biscuit: In short, the Commissioner will have an ironclad contract which provides for a huge golden handshake if his contract is terminated early.
        
        It’s some time ago now, but IIRC Commissioner Doone resigned after Clark declared she didn’t have confidence in him (this was after he allegedly avoided a sobriety test when he was stopped at a drink drive checkpoint)

        New Zealand does not have a politically appointed civil service in the same way as the US. Therefore senior officials retain their positions on a change of government. It is very difficult for an incoming minister to say I can work with X. He/she has to go.
        
        It occasionally does happen that there is a fundamental breakdown in the relationship with leads to the CE going, but that is very rare. Perhaps Christine Rankin and Steve Maharey was the last real instance of that.

        @Wayne Mapp, you are correct about the CEs of government departments being appointed so as to be independent of the views of the minister etc.
        
        But that principle is not always the case as history has served up. And as it happened there is the example of Police Commissioner Peter Donne, and the believed involvement of the then Prime Minister.

      Yes at 14 or 15 yrs old behaviour good or not so good is generally set in place. I always liked National’s school based social investment approach, where school staff on the ground applied a small number of factors and identified those at risk for targeted intensive support.
      
      Funded by scrapping the decile system of spraying money to pay for something or other. That ‘something or other’ doesn’t seem to be working well.

        Whilst I working in corrections in the 2000s I read a study out of the States that basically says that there is no real chance of rehabilitation for the present crop of criminals and they should therefore be wharehoused to keep the public safe whilst at the same time concentrating resources on the under 4s before they are sucked into the world of crime via social and economic policies for the communities they largely come from. The problem was the authors admitted that it would be hugely expensive, politically a very hard sell and the results wouldn’t be felt for years down the track so more than likely benefiting a completely different bevy of politicians so would never be attempted.

      I am sure that there are ways to remove government appointees. The police commisioners relationship with the crown is similar to that of a business director.       They laughed and said, while pointing out individuals: “He’s going; she’s going, not sure about him, he’s going he’s going…”etc.

        In that case the filtering has already been done and you could expect they were already, effectively, career criminals.
        
        Did the people you spoke with give any ideas on how this could be turned around?
        
        Far too many problems are addressed (not solved) top down by wussy, out of touch, management pushing some feel-good idea. Those at the coal face often have far more practical ideas that are more likely to solve the problems.

      Fair comment David but altering sentencing “laws” and “Bail Laws” by order in council if necessary after declaring a state of emergency over crime rates should bring some degree of reduction of criminal activity surely.
      Plus reinstating Three strikes under urgency should have some effect on some crims with functioning brain cells

    To be fair, I’m advised the register is intended to provide chain of custody information for the few people who buy guns legitimately, and then on-sell them to crims illegitimately.
    
    That is, if a number of guns turn up at crime scenes that can be traced back to Joe Average, then Joe Average gets pinged.
    
    Personally I reckon most illegal guns are coming in on the beach, but there you go.

      Serial numbers can, and are, removed from firearms in the hands of criminals.
      
      I can’t see it achieving anything much, especially if the firearms are obtained by theft (or claimed to be stolen).
      There will be a lot of firearms in NZ that will never be registered, and they will be doing the bulk to the trouble.
      Firearms owners have to keep their noses clean more than an average member of society. Gangs not so much.
      On that note – never heard how the killer in the Auckland CBD got his pump action shotgun, despite at the time either Cuddles or Ginny saying that they were “curious” to know where the firearm came from, as the killer was not licenced……silence/crickets.
      That is because when this sort of thing happens in future, it is not likely the firearm would even prove to be registered or traceable.
      What is needed is a crack down on firearm crime and criminals, and not making life harder for lawful and deemed ‘fit and proper’ people.

      Even if guns are being bought and on sold, the original registered owner will simply arrange for them to be “stolen” and report the theft. Admittedly they’ll only be able to do this once, but with enough stooges the gangs will have a regular supply of firearms. I would have thought that all firearms sold legally in NZ would already have their number recorded somewhere, at least by the dealer.
      I tend to agree however that the number of guns being on sold is tiny, and the register is an expensive way to solve this problem. It also opens the door to gun confiscation, even more than the current licensing system does.
      It’s more likely that most illegal firearms in NZ are being smuggled.

  Crooked license holder ( bear in mind who grants the license) will simply rent a gun to a criminal on a job by job basis , keeping it in safe custody between jobs.

  The reality is, ‘AgainstTheFlow’, that ACT will be a partner in a coalition and they will not get everything they want. It doesn’t work like that. Only if they are the senior partner will they be able to call the shots.
  
  The best thing, for ACT’s long-term future, is to demonstrate they are a responsible partner in a centre-right government. I hope ACT does get significant support but to think they will dominate a coalition is not rational.
  
  If ACT decides to spit the dummy and sit on the cross-benches, just giving confidence and supply to National, that will be the end of them.

      One thing that always bothered me about the story of Maui and his brothers fishing up the North Island was the fact that all Maori would have had to know what the shape of the North Island was, the same as the South Island and Stewart Island. Are you telling me that a landlocked tribe or the tribes at the top of the North Island even knew of Stewart Island or understood the principles of cartography?       And Kupe came here around the 10th century – not the 13th. According to my old Tuhoe Maori aunty (she died in 1972) Kupe brought a number of people with him, and they were the Moriori. That was her story – there are others of course.

        1) In using a dictionary definition to sort it out, which definition is to be used, given that there are different definitions which don’t say exactly the same thing?
        2) Who chooses the definition?
        3) What counts as acceptable evidence in determining the definition’s applicability to a group, on what basis do individuals qualify for membership of that indigenous group, and on whom does the burden of proof fall?
        4) Because, contra your last sentence in your 8.52 comment, many specific claims are NOT based on indigeneity, however much they use to the term, but on the basis of alleged promises made in 1840 and allegedly violated since then – your ancestors ripped my ancestors off and I’m still suffering from this etc – defining ‘indigenous’ won’t resolve these claims.
        
        On the whole, I think it is impossible to achieve cosmic justice (to steal a phrase from Thomas Sowell) by revisiting the past without inflicting injustices on people in the present, but so long as a sizeable and identifiable group of NZers feel aggrieved, to steal another phrase, this time from William Faulkner, that ‘the past is never dead. It is not even past’, dictionary definitions are unpersuasive and unhelpful.

Richard Prebble has an opinion piece in the Herald this morning and suggests that voter apathy will be the big his on Labour this election. He notes that the Labour party donations are about on par with NZ1st and below the Greens.
If the Labour defeat is as significant as the polls suggest could we be looking at the demise of the party?
It is unlikely (impossible) that they will get any new MPs that have the leadership or management skills to be an effective opposition and attract new talent. And lack of funds will be a challenge to their recovery. This defeat will be very different to the one Bill English and the Nats had in 2002.

    It has become the ‘goto’ for the ideologues and extreme nutters that infest every society.
    
    People who are tolerated, but normally never make too many waves because most people see the insanity of their ideologies and rightly ridicule them.
    Hence these moves to increase censorship, creation of Orwellian groups like the “Disinformation Project” and shutting down all and sundry for daring point out the completely nonsensical (and very dangerous) ideologies the fanatically push.
    
    The concerning part for me has been the actions of Seymour and Luxon for apparently being too frightened to call this garbage out for what it is. Supporting attacks on their own MPs for daring have a ‘different’ opinion to mainstream. Re educated Maureen Pugh and the ‘Nazi’ Elaine Naidu Franz come immediately to mind.
    
    I can only hope there is some sort of ‘cunning plan’ that I’m not aware of which they are going to implement once Labour has been destroyed at the election.

Maybe I’m reading too much into this but I’ve noted that whenever the NZ Herald and Stuff run a picture of Hipkins in connection with a Labour policy announcement, he’s always looking happy and positive. By contrast, pictures of Luxon always portray him as unhappy or pensive.

Perhaps it is a reflection of the differing personalities of the two Chrises but I have met Luxon twice and I certainly know that he can smile. Is this another example of the “mainstream” media’s anti-National bias?

I actually think that it a good thing … for each time a different Labour MP fills in for Megan, in today’s case, Ginny Anderson, it reveals the true person behind the glossy smiles and favorable media/PR soundbites.

Not only are they vacuous, they reveal their true nastiness as they belittle the Opposition’s policies as being “made up or serving the rich or having no answers” and so on.

Suggestion to ZB/Hosking – put a different Labour MP up each week until the election against Mark Mitchell … as well as being entertaining it will be popcorn gold!

The Labour Treaty Settlement Minister Angry Little attempting his own kinda Ram Raid!

The Rt Hon Minister A Little is trying to ram through the last 5 Hauraki iwi treaty settlements as well as trying to bully the Ngati Rangi iwi into giving in to Paul Majurey.

This ‘Ngati Paoa Settlement Bill’ before the Maori Affairs Select Committee.

The entire settlement process had been plagued with many poorly thought-through decisions by both the Crown and its officials as well as the negotiators and a series of poorly performing boards of trustees, both the Ngati Paoa iwi Trust board and also the defunct Ngati Paoa Trust Board.

There are still some major financial matters that need investigation as there have been no proper, (any) financial reports provided for example; the $15.626m investment made to purchase a shareholding of the Pouarua Farm in 2013 to the registered ‘holding’ company Ngati Paoa Group Investments Limited,(5898250).

The $15.626m is ‘on account’ and is to be deducted from the $23.5m. Other deductions to be made from this initial cash settlement include the $1m Railways Monies which to date have not been reported on fully by the Ngati Paoa Whanau Trust. After many enquiries made to the trust and to the accountants, Beesons who have audited the NPWT account. They still have not provided an adequate set of financial reports.

16 Properties were purchased from the Crown in 2015. Two properties were withdrawn. A $12.3m loan was raised to purchase these properties. To date, eight properties have been sold for approximately $8m. The rest of the properties remain unaccounted for.

What is also unknown are the liabilities associated with the partnership that Ngati Paoa is involved in with the Marutuahu Collective redress settlement regarding the Marutuahu developments, the Marutuahu Ropu General Partnership Limited. With the promotion of these developments across Tamaki, Auckland in Avondale, Mt Albert, and Waterview. Ngati Paoa liabilities are more than $200m. These developments are said to be worth more than $600m-$800m, P Majurey has said many times in the media. – Its the only report(s) ‘we’ get.

To date, since this entity was formed in 2013. The uri of Ngati Paoa have not received any financial reports or any information about what the risks are to these developments or how they are being funded.

This settlement also makes Paoa a party to the Pare Hauraki Collective Redress Bill.

In 2018 , in Manukau. 252 people voted against the signing of this settlement! Less than 44 people agreed. Somehow the Crown accepted a vote from a second group that was put together after the original official vote was taken. Where is the Tikanga in that process.

2020-2023: This last group of unelected self-appointed ‘trustees’ for the Ngati Paoa iwi Trust. They did not have a proper quorum of 5 trustees. In 2021 two resigned and in early 2022 another resigned. The remaining trustees were unable to form a proper quorum. No minutes for this entire election process have been provided to the many uri that have continually made requests since 2020. Which is a breach of the Trustees Act and also the Companys Act with regard to the financial reports or lack thereof let alone the Deed.

They removed the descendants of Paoa from the election process by cancelling the registration of the uri of Paoa. They then cancelled the election claiming no nominations were received and then they elected themselves unopposed. These current unelected trustees have no shame.

The current unelected trustees removed the three marae from the registration and voting process by cancelling the election. They did not involve the Kaumatua of those Marae in any validation of the whakapapa process because it was cancelled. Tika & Pono was not a consideration at any stage in their gerrymandering of the election. The current unelected trustees need to be removed immediately and a statutory manager be put in place, appointed by the Auditor Generals office.

In the past 4 elections for trustees. No more than 380 people get to vote. However, there are more than 4,500 that claim to be affiliated. We only have 3 Marae. Somehow we have 57 Hapu. This does not make any sense nor does it make any sense in reality. For example, Tainui-Waikato have 90,000+ registered members, 33 Marae and 28 Hapu.

Not one set of trustees has explained how this has come to be. The ‘Bill’ doe not make it any clearer.

The ‘deal’ outside of the settlement, the Pt England Commercial ‘deal’ will need another loan to be raised for approximately $12.2m if this commercial deal is to be pursued.

As this treaty settlement offer stands as I write this submission, it burdens the iwi with more debt and liabilities that no proper responsible person, trustee(s) would agree to if they were to take their fiduciary duty and legal obligations seriously.

This treaty settlement bill is not worthy of progressing to any further stage.

This bill and all its contents as well as the financial omissions within and unaccounted for from the current and past trustees, who have neglected their duties and obligations therefore these matters that I have raised must be fully investigated. This bill leaves more questions about the sustainability and security of the Settlement than it does otherwise.

I therefore request that a full and complete Administrative Audit be undertaken as well as a Financial Audit be done by the Auditor Generals office as soon as possible. This is the only proper thing to do to prevent another grievance.

I do not support this Bill. I wish to speak to the Maori Affairs Committee.

To recap from the NPIT Information hui held on 19

February 2022 the financial status of NPIT was:

1) No funds and no staff – NPIT did not appoint any staff

due to the $500k overdraft and the board worked

towards resolving the overdraft;

2) No spending – all expenditures ceased due to no pūtea, therefore expenses were reduced considerably, but still receiving increasing overdraft fees. Board members and our Ngāti Paoa whānau worked voluntarily; and

3) No access – NPIT had no access to Xero or BNZ operational accounts. It had taken a considerable length of time and process to get access

Furthermore, the audited accounts from the previous trustees/directors of the Ngati Paoa Group Holding Ltd company need further scrutiny as there seems to be poor management and Directorship of the Holding company by the two directors, B Rhind and M Forbes.

Then the ‘phoenix’ Ngati Paoa holding company is (re)registered. And there doesn’t seem to be any current Annual Returns report(s) recorded for the company.

Also, the Pouarua Farm, a parcel of shares worth, $15,625,000,000 (29.21% shareholding). There have not been any reports and Annual Financial reports on this investment other than in 2016 at Wharekawa Marae.

The NPGH Ltd accounts do not show any returns on this investment nor does the NPiT.he Ngati Paoa interests within the Marutuahu Collective redress settlement bill.

Ngati Paoa is compromised and is liable for these developments. However, Ngati Paoa has no (Direct,) involvement in any decision-making for any of these investments worth hundreds of millions of dollars. This all has been unreported. No Financial Reports have been provided to the iwi since 2013 from the Marutuahu Ropu Group Holding Ltd and the Marutuahu General Partners Ltd.

There are also issues surrounding the 1993 Railways Settlement monies and discrepancies with the organisation responsible for the $1m settlement. The Ngati Paoa Whanau (Registered Charity) claims to hold these funds. Their appointed accountants Beessons of Onehunga refuse to confirm this and so do NPWT trustees. This matter needs to be investigated as well as all of the matters that are contained within my submission and this document too.

There are more questions to be asked than all the claims made by the current unelected trustees about their financial reporting and financial status.

Also, what creates doubt about these trustee’s competence and accountability to perform their duties diligently is the lack of transparency by which I mean the numerous requests made for minutes going back to 2020. They have refused to provide any minutes when uri make those requests.

And Angry Little does nothing to get to the bottom of any of this and investigate all of these matters that have been sent to him and his officials over the years many times.

With less than 10 sitting days left for them in parliament I’m betting he’s gunna try to ram these settlements through the House to score ‘Brownie’ points for himself.

I have just crunched the numbers for the tax rate thresholds announced by National.
Someone on $75k per annum on the M code will pay $20 nett less PAYE per week.
The changes to the thresholds are modest, but I suppose realistic. This probably does not fully compensate for the fiscal drag effect of rising incomes. Given that the earliest time for this to be delivered is May next year, and wage reviews in NZ normally occur in January, then increased tax revenue will pay for this.

Police are seeking the public’s help to identify a mystery man after a student midwife was sexually assaulted outside a South Auckland hospital earlier this month.

The health worker was assaulted when walking to her car after her evening shift outside Middlemore Hospital on August 14.

Counties Manukau Police are appealing for information from the public to identify the man to assist with the investigation.

Yes – Auckland’s extra petrol tax removal will be most welcome. I was filling up my tank each week, same time, same place, same day, same mileage, and each week it came to about $50. After June, it became $70. Last fill, it was $80.

Is that true. Why can’t they just be paid out and replaced immediately. It’s the new government’s decision who they want in those roles, surely?
Mark Mitchell has already said he’d resign if he can’t cut crime by 50% in the first year. What chance of that happening with Cuddles glued in the big leather chair??

And there is a the convention of non-political civil service, But in these two cases the track record of failures and ongoing damage they are doing is too large to let them stay. They should be strongly encouraged to resign with immediate effect, and if they won’t jump them push them.

What’s the story with the Southland Regional Development Agency Ltd having a North Island-based chairman?

The agency, which uses the name, Great South, has been cornered in its project for an oat-milk producing factory. This is being “hijacked” to Canterbury. The plan now is to take Southland-grown oats to Canterbury for processing.

NZ Functional Foods Ltd and the development agency had hoped to build the oat-milk factory in the southern region, once famed for its oat production.

A company ultimately 90 per cent owned by Stephen Tindall, has 51 per cent of NZ Functional Foods, and the regional agency has 49 per cent.

Howard Clarke, of Balclutha-based chemical and seeds company, Advance Agriculture, was reported in the Otago Daily Times this month as saying he would welcome an inquiry into how 10 years of work from Great South employees would end with the plant being built in Canterbury.

He said that, because of its climate, Southland was one of the best places in the world to grow high-quality oats. He believed the transport costs to Canterbury would be a barrier to developing a Southland oat-growing industry.

Southland Regional Development Agency, owned by Southland local authorities, is chaired by Ian Collier, of Masterton. The directors are:

Ian (Ian Douglas) Collier; Jason Richard Franklin, of Riverton; Jeffrey James Grant, of Balfour;
Lucy Merrick Jane Griffiths, of Masterton; Peter James Heenan, of Invercargill; Rachel Anne Lindsay, of Invercargill; and Maria Hinewai Pera, of Bluff.

Southland District Council Mayor Gary Tong, who chairs the Joint Shareholders Committee that selected the new board, welcomed Collier’s appointment.

“While he is not a Southlander, he has had strong ties with the region over a long period of time. In particular, through his position in Air New Zealand, he supported local tourism development such as the Bluff Oyster Festival and more latterly helped deliver the direct air link to Auckland.”

The key target of the Southland Regional Development Agency Ltd is to lift Southland’s population by 10,000. The present population is just over 100,000.

The use of “Great South” as a trading name for the Southland Regional Development Agency Ltd, isn’t notably original. About 50 companies on the NZ Companies Register have “Great South” in their name.

The popularity of the title took off when there was much baloney that the Great South Basin off the southern coast was likely to be a new North Sea scale oil field.

  Maybe she’s holding on to them. Friend in Washington state told me before her daughter in law has told her they’ve been told that masks and mandates will be coming back to their federal work place, and they’ve been told lock downs are possible as well

So the NZCTU digital attack billboard campaign on Luxon got launched a week early by mistake and had to be taken down.

It’s kind of like all the panic-driven campaign ‘shooting in the foot’ that happened to National in 2020 is happening to the other team this time around… (it appears Richard Wagstaff was somewhat embarrassed, but nothing to see here, of course).

To be honest I just expect when I open the news there will be a story of a young kid committing a crime

A school was put into lockdown, highways were closed and a sports field was ripped up by a car doing doughnuts during a crime spree allegedly involving culprits as young as 12.

The trio of youngsters are believed to have left a trail of havoc across Christchurch on Wednesday, from Heathcote and Sumner before driving in the wrong lane up the Northern Motorway to Belfast.
