The Californian Government is suing the oil companies, seeking billions in compensation for “climate change”. The Attorney-General claims that the companies deceived the public about the effects of their products, citing the tobacco companies being successfully sued.

The CTU has published a swingeing critique of National’s tax / housing policy, saying that already mega rich residential landlords are going to make out like bandits under one of the tax policies. That would be removing interest deductibility.

The CTU has also found that mega landlords will make mega bucks from the National tax plan. In 2021, data showed there were 346 landlords who owned at least 200 properties each. The CTU analysis shows those landlords are in for an average tax cut of $1.3m each over five years – the total going to that group: $464m.

A question for the CTU. Did you check if the designation ‘landlord’ on MBIE bond data does equal owner? In fact very often it does not. It is extremely common for the agent, usually a property manager, to be listed on bond records as the landlord. It’s legal. How many of the 346 mega landlords are actually property managers?

Looks to me like the CTU’s economist Craig Renney may very well have got their ‘analysis’ completely wrong. No doubt the CTU will check their spreadsheet and let Newshub (and voters) know if they have cocked up.

        The issue arises from the fact that the nature of the business is to leverage house price inflation taking the proceeds as non-taxable capital gain. There is an arguable position then that therefore the interest expenses incurred in generating the leveraged capital gains should not be deductible. There is an element of having your cake and eating it as well.

        Correct, but the solution is not to tax wealth/assets. The solution is to not artificially inflate the value of those assets via the fiat currency system in the first place. It’s more of a matter of the govt trying to have its cake and eat it too. You can’t promise the public a whole bunch of lollies and handouts that you don’t have the money to pay for. This requires borrowing and printing $, resulting in inflation and a rise in asset values. Same with “stimulating” the economy. You can’t lower the OCR to 0.25% and not expect a huge inflation in asset values.
        
        They need to raise interest rates and stop creating so much currency. This will restrict house prices and general inflation.

        Sorry Milton, accidental downtick. Yes, I agree with what you say. I’m not advocating a wealth tax, just pointing out that (traditionally) rental property businesses have been a bit of an anomaly, in that they can generate capital gains while at the same time generating tax losses that could be claimed against income from your day job. Unlike a normal business that probably pays wages and PAYE, and any capital gain is a function of increased taxable profits.

    Trump won’t be in jail. All of this hassling Trump is to try and stop him running in 2024. It is also a diversion by the media, keep the attention on Trump and forger what the crooked Biden Family is doing.
    I still say that the Biden Admin will fold at the last possible minute. This is because I think Biden can not be indicted while he is in Office. I think – still have not found out if that is true.
    Biden’s replacement will step in at that last minute. It will be none other than Hillary Clinton – such is her hate of Trump.

Surprised there hasn’t been any media commentary on Labour’s attack ads that are being played on both tv and radio.

I may be wrong but I don’t recall political attack ads on tv/radio past?

But imagine if National or ACT were doing them, every media commentator would be belittling them as being “desperate”!

  Yes and people still seem to have conniptions about the old National dancing Cossack ad from way back in the 70s and it seems to be a leftie article of faith that the ad was the low point in any political campaign. I never saw what was wrong with it and it sure was a lot less nasty and scaremongering than the current Labour cuts attack ads. But apparently these ads are not a problem.

    Unfortunately, Seymour played into the media’s hands by stating that he would sit outside cabinet and, therefore, gave the impression he would not be part of a stable government. Votes then started to switch from Act to NZF. Hopefully, we will see a better result on Saturday and NZF won’t be needed.

      Four days out from a election and Labour Prime Minister Chris Hipkins is encouraging Political Parties to be bold on Pro – Maori initiatives instead of fear around Co Governance.

        They have realised that this time they have failed to overthrow democracy.
        However , they are in every influential organisation in the country and many of them will obviously still be there under the next government. They have been indoctrinated through their education and their workplaces and a change of government can’t wipe that slate clean.

It was hard to believe or imagine that after the terrible Murders, Gang Rapes Kidnapping of elderly people as well as very young mums and wee babies in Gaza and calls to eliminate Jews uttered by so many .
Yet it is also hard to believe that any Democratic loving NZ would call for the defenders of the massacred people by Hamas and their associates to be classed as Terrorists.
Yet in NZ a woman from the Commie Green Party wanted the armed forces the defenders of Israel to be also called terrorists .
Seems the woman has form against Israel .A few years ago she was caught and jailed for being part of an attempted blockade of a port in Israel .
Yes a Green MP called Marama Davidson from Commie Green Party in full flight last night made the call for Israel defenders against Murderers Gang Rapists Child and mother and elderly Kidnappers to be also known as Terrorists.
It is also beyond belief that any Political Green Party in NZ planning to enjoin with Labour and Maori Party at the coming General Election on Saturday has that type of destructive mentality .
Yes lest we forget or don’t know The Green Party masquerading as an environment saviour of NZ attacking Farming Community are more interested in sticking their noses into the affairs of other countries .
Maybe NZs voters should think long and hard about the type of Party that could be part of NZs next Government. Nuff Said.

National’s election strategy has been abysmal. To much emphasis on running a “positive” campaign and insufficient on attacking Labour’s record where Labour is really vulnerable. It has played into Labour’s hands by confirming Labour’s accusations of Nat/ACT/NZF being a coalition of chaos by attacking NZF and talking of second elections. National should have ignored NZF – rather than counter-productively trying to persuade voters not to vote for NZF. Also National should have attacked Labour’s only path to power, the left’s potential coalition of chaos (Lab/Greens/ TMP/NZF).

Labour’s strategy has been good. Avoiding its record and repeatedly attacking National’s weak points (e.g. tax cut numbers don’t add up, and the coalition of chaos).

The only mitigating factor is that despite National’s strategic failures, not many voters are likely to switch votes from the right bloc to the left bloc, because of those failures, because of the strong depth of felling against Labour now. I think the principal result of the failures will be votes being transferred from National to ACT and NZF.

        I agree Luxon’s preferred PM rating is up. IMO that’s people getting to know Chippy now that the honeymoon is over. NAT was ahead of Labour before the campaign started. I challenge you again to name a single issue where National (or ACT) have gained traction in the campaign and where you could think that voters are switching on that basis. Likewise, name a single ad that stands out. There has been no “show me the money” moment. Except maybe from the other side rebutting the tax proposal.
        I assume National thought the election un-loseable and have attempted to sleep walk to victory. I hope they were correct.

  You’re right, National’s campaign has been a bit of an oddity. They handled the Winston Peters thing poorly and ended up helping him in the polls. They started by saying he isn’t currently in Parliament, then they went on the Road to Damascus and said they’d deal with NZF if they have to even though they don’t really like him. Then they had the dumb idea of babbling on about second elections.
  
  I realise because of the nature of MMP National feel they have to mollycoddle up to the centre ground vote. But, I’m a fiscal conservative and am very moderately liberal on social issues. I also think size of government in NZ has got far too big and flabby thanks to Labour, Ardern, Hipkins and Robertson. To get the economy fighting fit is going require real cuts in spending as Seymour has been hinting at. It remains to be seen if the Nats have the stomach for that.
  
  Throughout this election campaign I’ve been unsure what Nationals overall philosophy currently is. They seem to have lost they soul somewhat. Btw I did vote 2 ticks National this election. Another 3 years of Labour, no thanks.
  
  As for the result I think it will be something like DPF has predicted on the Curia Public Poll Average on the sidebar here at Kiwiblog. There will be a National lead coalition with ACT and NZF.

      Can I give a bouquet here. I think Luxon has done a lot better in the campaign that some thought he would. He has improved during the media standups under intense scrutiny.
      
      It has been an odd campaign because the governing party is scared to run on its record and has turned very negative.
      
      I’m confident there will be a change in government.

    Re the MSM. Some examples of bias I’ve noticed.
    
    – Yesterday at Hipkins daily media standup, the questions were patsies. When its Luxon they’re like a pack of wolves.
    – 1News bulletins at lunchtime and 6pm give Hipkins much more favourable coverage.
    – Newshub’c coverage is very much from a left perspective both on the 6pm news and their website.

    – Rebecca Wright on Newshub a couple of weekends ago interviewing Luxon talked over top of him and was downright rude.
    – Maiki Sherman (1News) is clearly a leftie and biased.
    – Practically all the political journo’s on Stuff except Luke Malpass are lefties.
    – The media coverage by 1News and Stuff of The Press minor parties leaders debate afterwards was very slanted. I did watch the debate in full and how they reported on it was not balanced.
    – The NZ Herald have several journo’s who are lefties and biased.

In 2016, NZ vehicle theft rate was about number 3 in the world. Not great. Still about 3x what it is in Australia – the country we most like to compare ourselves to.
By 2018 it had increased by about 50%, propelling NZ to the top slot. About 5x the rate of Australia.
Since then it has really taken off. The latest figures are for 2022 and those place NZ head and shoulders above anyone else and about 7 or 8x the rate of Australia.
It would not be surprising if 2023 sees yet another rise.

Wake up NZ. The cute image we have of ourselves as a low-crime nation is woefully out of date.

This will continue because there are no negative consequences to crime – just up-sides.

The voice of bureaucracy …

Auckland Super City’s development agency is in Stuff today talking of attracting more technology migrants for its “tech sector”.

The agency’s name is a saga in itself. The organisation was created as Regional Facilities Auckland Ltd in September 2010. In November 2020, it changed its name to Auckland Unlimited Limited. In May last year it changed its name to Taktaki Auckland Unlimited. Ownership hasn’t change. The owner’s listed as “Auckland Council”.

How did the Companies Office allow such a name? “Limited” has specific legal meaning. For example, in a limited-liability company failure, liability for its debts is restricted to the entity itself, rather than including its owners. Use of the word in a firm name is restricted to such companies.

The Companies Act 1993, section 381, for example says:

Any person who, not being incorporated with limited liability, whether alone or with other persons, carries on business under a name or title of which “Limited” or a contraction or imitation of that word is the last word, commits an offence ..

Elsewhere, the Act says:

The registered name of a company must end with the word “Limited” or the words “Tāpui (Limited)” if the liability of the shareholders of the company is limited.

But here we have an Auckland Council owned company tacking “unlimited” into its name, just before “limited”, and the Companies Office accepting the change. The term “unlimited limited” is confusing if not nonsensical.

I didn’t know “Tapui” could be used, but note it seems to be required to be followed by “limited” in brackets.

  A limited liability company can use a brand name that does not contain the word ‘limited’ (indeed the brand name cannot contain the word ‘limited’). Of course it has to use its formal registered name (including Limited or Inc. as appropriate) in contracts or legal proceedings.

    It was about 30 or so years ago when a company sued my poor client. We produced the original of the invoice. It did not show the company’s full name. The judge threw the case out. Instead of paying the company the poor man paid me, the beancounter.

    Of the 706,000 companies in NZ (figures for June, 2022), about 130 (about 0.018 per cent) have “unlimited” as the first word in their registered name (e.g. Unlimited Ventures Ltd of Motueka).
    
    That is not confusing in the way that the word “unlimited” immediately before the word “limited” is.
    
    Firms using “unlimited” in their names and which are not registered as limited companies do not conflict with the regulations.

Naturally, Groceries are polling the highest of the four options offered.
However, insurance is second well ahead of power/gas.
An interesting question would be to ask how many are no longer insured at all.

My own insurance (house, contents, car) saw a $1500 increase when it rolled over a couple of months ago and I’ve been considering cutting back on insurance to ease the pressure.

Around 8am today, there was brief mention in an RNZ election roundup “live update” of a new poll that showed an increase in the Labour vote, and NZF up to about 8%. I didn’t have time to read the article at that time, and now can’t find any mention in either RNZ or Stuff (or NZH) of any such poll. I would have thought this would have made big headlines if it were true.

Can anyone throw some enlightenment on this?

It beats me why people with a “Green” mentality never address the issue of uncontrolled feral animals.
Do they not realise that there are thousands and thousands of wild deer, pigs, goats, rabbits, possums, cats (to name a few) free roaming the countryside, eating the grass and trees, drinking and sh…ting in “our rivers and streams.”
They are not regulated in any way. Not tested for diseases. They know nothing about fences.
There is little value in these animals, except for recreational hunting purposes where animals are killed for trophies and food – and not always in a “kind” way.
But they all emit methane – same as the lowly cow and sheep.
But no, just forget about all that and focus on getting rid of the well looked after, healthy, fence-controlled farm animals, which turn a profit for the country through export earnings.
And for the Greens, the best outcome of all is to destroy the livelihoods of farmers their families and rural communities.

But deer and pig numbers are currently too high, possibly because of the impact of lockdowns on hunting. A sensationlist front page Herald story today about unsucessfully wanna-be MP, Uini Symth alleging the National Party “broke the law” by demanding she declare her previous criminal convictions during pre-selection meetings is a complete crock.

In 2020 she declared her criminal DUI conviction to the party’s selection committee. When she applied again in 2023 for selection, seven years had elapsed since her conviction and she relied on her Cleam Slate Act eligibility to not declare the conviction at the 2023 selection meeting.

However a person on the 2020 committe was also on the 2023 comittee so he already knew about her DUI conviction and encouraged her to admit it – he was doing her a favout because he could have simply told members of the 2023 selection committe about her DUI conviction, and would not be breaching the Clean Slate Act in doing so. It is only Government agencies that hold criminal record information that are prohibited from disclosing conviction covered under the Clean Slate Act. Private individuals are under no such restriction but the Herald article wrongly suggests they are.

But instead Symth, because she missed out on selection, has gone to the media with wild allegations a few days before the election. National missed a bullet in not selecting this woman. The story is also an indicement on Herald reporter David Fisher’s fail to understand the Clean Slate Act before launching another hit-piece on the National party.

  I didn’t think clean slate covers drink driving because it is an imprisonable offence above a certain duration threshold (can’t remember exactly what).
  
  I looked into it years ago, because of my drink driving convictions of 30-35 years ago, and saw that, alas, my convictions were not covered.

    Swifty – anyone sentenced to prison never gets the benefit of the Clean Slate Act. Unless you spent time in prison (or were disqualified idefinitly from drivin – happens with three DUI convictions in quick succession) then you are eligible for the Clean Slate.
    
    Is it possible when you requested your own criminal history you asked for your FULL history? If so, the Ministry of Justice will release your FULL history to you (and only you – no-one else).
    
    Try again but this time don’t ask for your FULL history and you will received exactly what an employer would receive:

Why should young adults vote for either National or Labour?

They both contributed to our longstanding housing affordability crisis. The relentless house price inflation really skyrocketed under a Labour government (Helen Clark’s). Unfortunately, average incomes didn’t increase at the same rate…. Yep that’s under Labour, the “working man’s friend” (?)

How did John Key’s National government do on housing affordability?…. Promised to fix it but made it worse…. Ardern’s government?…. Yep, worse again.

This is the chart that proves Labour & Bollard caused the initial blowout: Median House Prices 1995-2007 | teara.govt.nz

From 1995-2002, average house price inflation* was 4.5% p.a. (Don Brash was Governor of the Reserve Bank during those years)

From 2002-2007, average house price inflation was 12.7% p.a. (under Alan Bollard. Governor appointed by Labour.)

So Brash’s 4.5% wasn’t great (inflation was supposed to be contained below 2%). But under Labour & Bollard, 12.7% was a real blowout!

The point is: houses used to be much cheaper compared to annual incomes. So, if you’re a young voter (1) aspiring to own your first ‘over-priced’ home; (2) struggling to save a deposit as the cost of living rises (thanks Labour!); and (3) scared of eye-watering mortgage rates, remember who did this to “your generation”: it was Labour and National. With NO solution in sight from either party…. Think about that if you haven’t voted yet.

*I used the Geometric Mean to get the average rate of change.

  In 1970 we bought our first house (a spacious 3br Californian bungalow) for $13,500. My husband’s salary was $970/year. The interest rates were 4% 1st mortgage, 6.5% 2nd mortgage.
  We managed to raise 3 kids, and pay it off in 14 years.
  Went for a holiday to celebrate – a weekend in Rotorua, pretending to be wealthy tourists!

  It’s an economic illusion. It’s not so much that house prices have increased. It’s more that everyone has become impoverished and there’s been a big increase in inequality. Inflation hides this fact.
  
  People actually think they are doing well when their min wage goes up by $1.50. Not realising that house prices increased by $100k in the same year. ie they are going backwards.

Is this the last throw of the dice from the incompetents. Just had a good laugh which was needed with the Middle East tragedy. I live rural on pot holed roads. Driving to shops was met with a multitude of road repair trucks and safety vested workers ,( not doing much) and countless orange cones. Wow what brought this on? Surely not an election ! The best laugh was yet to come. A major road has been one lane for months controlled by auto traffic lights. The service today further improved manned by a human with a stop/go sign. Lights still working was having difficulty synchronising his sign with the lights. Great fun !!!

  I still agree with Sir Bob Jones – and he has been very accurate for decades, so he has some form. He is still predicting a Labour bloodbath with an easy victory for Nats/ACT. Winston 1st will still get over 5%, but will be surplus to requirements.
  
  Remember to that last years local govt polls were completely wrong by a huge margin. So something has changed IMO.
  
  If the mainstream polls are correct, and they might be, then there will be a mass exodus to north Queensland!

  While it’s only a few days from the Grand Final and all these polls will be forgotten, this is still fairly interesting today.
  
  I’m reminded of 50yrs ago when I lived in London and newspapers were king.
  The first edition of the Evening Standard came out at lunchtime and one day they had screaming headlines of world importance. I bought the paper after work to find out all about it. By then it was a small couple of inch article on page eight.

        My point is that it’s not about not wanting to hear things, I would just like to see some balance in reporting, I can accept that my party of preference doesn’t always get it right or have all the answers, but equally I don’t believe that the opposing parties has it right all the time either. It’s just that we don’t see coverage of poor performance from Labour. And there has been plenty of that over the last 6 years.
        
        In a lot of peoples view the media is not presenting a balanced view of parties. Labour have really nicely deflected all media attention onto Nationals policies and as a result have evaded examination of their policies such as they are and their track record. We see heaps of criticism of any supposed hole in a National budget or policy but Robertson walks off without question of his track record of wastefulness.
        
        We have health statistics which have been embargoed until after the election because they are apparently disastrous, no media coverage of that.
        
        There has been no examination of Labours ability to manage a Labour, Greens and Te Pati Maori caucus arguably a much more volatile mix of personalities that a National, ACT and NZ First caucus.
        
        The media took direct government funding and agree to not negatively report on some social constructs. They in effect agreed to self censorshp in exchange for funding.
        
        It’s a fact that 75% of the media identify as left or hard left. They also took $110M to present only a government approved view of a government programme thereby not allowing the cleansing light of sunshine in and allow a national conversation on those matters. I think that used to be the media’s role ?
        
        So it’s no surprise that people like me doubt their ability to not reflect their bias in what they report and what they don’t.

What is a Paris Aligned Index?

Paris Aligned Indexes are designed to help reduce climate‑related investment risk and help limit global temperature rise.
Specifically, the index aims to:

Target a reduction in emissions intensity, versus the broad global share market**, of at least 50%.
Deliver a decarbonisation rate of 10% year-on-year.

Reduce the Index’s exposure to physical risk arising from extreme weather events by at least 50%.

Increase the weight of companies that are exposed to climate transition opportunities and reduces the weight of companies exposed to climate transition risks.

Shift exposures from “brown” to “green,” at least doubling the exposure to green revenue.

Our goal in adopting this index is to seek to better manage climate‑related risks and by doing so enhance the long‑term value of your investments”

Nowhere did I read that their goal would be to maximise the return on my investment.
They also don’t seem to understand the difference between climate and weather, claiming that this year’s bad weather was due to climate change.

I don’t think I have much choice but to move my investment elsewhere, but it’s actually a bit tricky trying to find places that aren’t infected with this nonsense. Everywhere I look I find ESG nonsense.

Stats NZ data, released on Wednesday, showed New Zealand recorded a net migration gain of 110,200 in the August year

The gain is driven by annual migrant arrivals reaching an all-time high of 225,000 in the same period. This is offset by 115,100 migrants leaving – slightly below the annual record of 117,400 in the February 2012 year.

The net migration loss of New Zealand citizens for the same period is 42,600 – just below the record loss of 44,400 in the February 2012 year. And they’re mostly leaving for one place – Australia. The Stats NZ data shows in the March 2023 year, 53 percent of New Zealand citizens leaving were heading across the ditch.

“Net migration continues to be driven by non-New Zealand citizen arrivals, with about 8 out of 9 migrants arriving on a non-New Zealand passport,” population indicators manager Tehseen Islam said.’

    *Yes, many ethnicities and nationalities are much more tribal and patriotic than they’ll admit in English to the nearest pale face. Some if not many view our generosity as weakness and stupidity to be exploited. (At my work, I am secretly learning Hindi and occasionally pick up snippets of dialogue that make my blood boil, but I do need to improve my listening comprehension in case I’m jumping the gun.     Here’s a couple who came to NZ from China on student visas.
    
    They later moved to Australia, no doubt enabled by NZ residency to get through the Tasman back door.
    
    In Australia they ripped off banks for more than $9 million, and now have been deported – to New Zealand.

I believe that New Zealand can and should keep taking action on climate change. Our emissions are coming down, but we need to keep investing in climate initiatives if we want to keep making progress. That investment won’t happen unless there is a a Labour Government.

I believe that New Zealanders deserve a strong health system, and our children deserve the possible best education system. But these are the very services that always take a hit when other parties campaign on unfunded election promises. Only Labour will continue to invest in the core services New Zealanders rely on.

And finally, I believe in Chris Hipkins and the Labour team. I have worked with them, and I know them – that’s why I can tell you that they are in it for you.

We are in the final days of an election where every vote will make a difference, and that’s why we need your help. If you believe in the same things I do, then join me by donating to Labour.

He’s clearly no spring chicken yet he is only a Lance Corporal. That’s the absolute lowest rank in the Army.

I assume, given his age, he’s been in the Army for quite a while. Anyone who can’t make at least full corporal within 5 years is a waste of space in a small army and should be thrown out.

I am also a bit surprised that female soldiers are not able to defend themselves a bit better, but that’s a different issue.

    Swifty: The prime minister has made it absolutely clear that there will be no arrangement with NZ First. So, even if Winston were to “renege” (no doubt claiming some sort of moral high ground), that will not change, regardless of the final outcome of the election, unless, of course, Hipkins were to be deposed sometime next month (which, in my view, would be extremely unlikely).
    
    There will not be a second election (in March?) – Winston has made that quite clear. Therefore, in my opinion, if it comes down to Winston holding the balance of power, he (according to himself, being the “adult in the room”) will go with National, or, if the animosity between Peters and Seymour is to be believed, give National confidence and supply (and sit on the cross benches), making sure that NZ First has meaningful input in all the NACT’s proposed legislation.
    
    In the possible event of this arrangement breaking down, there could be an “snap” election, say, in 2025, but not necessarily so. Who knows, something could happen whereby a sufficient number of NZ First or ACT NZ MPs (or even MPs from both parties) could break away and enable Luxon to see out the term as prime minister, as happened in 1998 with Shipley.
    
    So, in my view, whichever way it all plays out, there will be a change of government after Saturday. Both polls this evening make it clear that Labour, the Greens, and Te Pāti Māori, together, will not make it to 61 (or more) seats.

      TV3 has the right bloc dropping even further – of course they do – trying to create the false impression that Labour still has a chance. This is the most media-drive election I have ever seen. Hopefully Luxon and Seymour have done enough on their own without the assistance of the media to get over the line without Winston.

Three Now wants you to believe the Left are in control of the 2023 General Election. This is quite convenient for Jenna Lynch as it’s the last poll before the Election.
I hope if National Act do eventually win this Election they hang TV Three out to dry and refuse to bale them out of there revenue problems.
