Luxon without principles and floats with the wind will be very useful qualities in a PM given the international political position. NZ will need to hard pivot to China at some point over the next 5 years.

Hate to say it but John Key has got China right.

GAE with its D.I.E / E.S.G failures will lead to NZ under Luxon to pivot to embrace the economically sound BRICS. Luxon will not be a GAE hold out as he floats along with the wind. Luxon on the surface a woke corporate shrill but he can read a room and his wokeness just got him through the ranks. Watch NZ pivot. Its what small countries must do to get along.

  Sadly NZ learnt nothing when the UK joined the EEC in 1973. We went on to replace the UK with China as a dominate trading partner. Now we are going to reap the foolishness of that decision. What we should have done was look to spread our trade risk. Better to send 10% of exports to 10 countries than 30% to one. China will punish NZ if we side with the US and other Western countries by stopping our exports and imports. Other countries wont pick up the slack. Get used to a even more peasant economy than we have now.

    That is not how international trade works.
    
    It isn’t a farmers’ market where you send all your cabbages to X-street market then find they’re only buying broccoli and should have sent your cabbages to Y street market.
    
    All goods are really just put on the international market place and people buy or don’t buy.
    
    What does matter is having free trade agreements etc.

    Australia is still more important economically to NZ than China is.
    
    Until recently only behind China in exports, but of vast business influence in NZ: controls the banks; many big foreign firms just tack NZ operations onto their bigger Australian arms; enveloped in international shipping and air routes to Australia.

    Who exactly is “we” here? I haven’t sold anything to China. The Government hasn’t forced anybody to sell anything to China when they wanted instead to sell it to India, or Germany, or whoever. If any individual farmer, or manufacturer, or service exporter, has rendered themselves entirely dependent on a Chinese buyer, the more fools they, but how are “we” responsible for that? Was the Government supposed to stop them, and was the Government then responsible for compensating, or finding another buyer for, the lost sales?

  Key has attracted a lot of criticism for “not changing anything” in nine years of power, but he deserves credit for the stability and downstream prosperity that NZ enjoyed in his time. Certainly they were far better times than the last six years under the socialist phoneys. However….in my view China was a blindspot of his. I attended a number of addresses he made at breakfasts and conferences and he wash unabashedly pro-relations with China. At one breakfast I went to he identified digital comms and China as the “opportunities of our time” and said that with China “you choose to be on the wagon or not, I choose to be on”. He was quite dismissive of those with moral or practical reasons to not think the same. I guess it’s a complicated issue. There’s a lot of noise about the political east (China, Russia etc) feeding the western culture wars to destabilise us from within, and that’s almost certainly true. But it’s a fraught game, because our increased moral posturing might lead us to completely isolate them economically. It seems a million miles away right now, but there is already a subtle shift away from reliance on China with some manufacturing pivoting to other parts of Asia. It’s not practical to turn the tap off quickly but i think we should be looking elsewhere right away.

  Simon – I agree that we must pivot away from the failing hegemonic US orbit. For some time I have been suggesting that we need to leave the 5 Eyes. At the drop of a hat they will betray us. The same with Europe. Remember GB cut trading with us to join the Common Market?
  
  As a distant island nation we are dependent on the powers that control the sea routes and we need to be allied with them. Initially it was the British, who lost it to the US and now the US are losing it to China. It makes sense to be on friendly terms with China, trade with them and court the other BRICS – including Russia.

    @mawm: China is not in a position to control the world’s sea routes. Peter Zeihan points out that China has no long-distance naval capacity, and can control no more than the seas in its vicinity.
    
    The problem is that the USA has less capability now, and possibly less desire, and therefore the future “protection” of free trade is becoming more of a very unclear free-for-all. Let us hope that “unclear” does not become “nuclear”.

        An excellent article which highlights Chinese involvement in ports around the world Its interesting to note that Hutchisons (HPH) I believe operate the container terminals at each end of the Panama Canal which has caused angst for the Americans. HPH use to have a mixed Chinese and Anglo senior management team as far as I am aware it is totally Chinese now.

    That is a bit OTT saying the fence did not work “one bit”. The fence did, and still does, work to a great extent. Sure, it was breached but the flow of people was limited to relatively short portions. It still kept back far more than if it had not been there. It was also relatively easy to re-secure.
    
    There was certainly a failure in identifying the threat of drone attacks on the towers.
    
    $500M is small money in the grand scheme of things. Each Iron Dome missile costs USD50k and they fire those off like Guy Fawkes.
    
    What are the options? The only other option for Israel would to cease to exist.

      The fence did not work “one bit.”
      In fact, the fence did work but was isolated from its support elements.
      Even with its failures the fence caused bottlenecks, which Hamas only overcame by using multiple breaches.
      The fence gives the IDF the ability to concentrate their defence on relatively small areas, they just lost their ‘eyes.’

        The eyes were targetted early on , but so was the divisional hq .That meant there was no information and no command and control ( as they were fighting for their lives)
        
        Israel had 7 surveillance balloons , along with many other surveillance methods , on the border . 3 weren’t operational on the morning of the attack and the 4 that were were destroyed early in the attack.
        
        btw Netanyahu had recently sent 3 battalions from gaza command to west bank for issues there .
        
        You can’t defend a border , surveilled or otherwise without troops.

Every survey/poll I have seen, clearly indicates the majority of New Zealanders want his sorted, and an end to the continual re-interpretation of the Treaty and the ‘obscure’ principles, what ever they are.

  Ignorant people are describing this as a referendum on the Treaty. It is not. It is a referendum on a definition of the principles of the Treaty. It is vital that the principles be defined once and forever. Perpetual extension of the treaty into every aspect of life in NZ should be stopped. It happened in 1840. End of story.   I feel sorry for this person. Such an outlook will not lead to a contented or successful life. What does that statement remind you of? An evangelical Christian. Replace “Treaty” with “God”. This woman is living proof that the Treaty has become a religion.
  
  The other thing that comes through from those interviewed is a perception that ACT is proposing a referendum to rescind the Treaty. Expect the media to keep fuelling that myth.

      Beware of the mis-informed who confuse the ‘Principles’ with the ‘Articles.’
      There is one large problem with all of this. Most of NZ are not really familiar with what is in the Treaty. Also many Maori think they know, but most are in the two generations since the Waitangi Tribunal rogue Treaty version was written. There are not two Treaty versions, just one, the original in Maori along with the Littlewood Draft.

    The Treaty was with a Maori that no longer exist in the sense they did in 1840.
    Most are no longer majority dna Maori, do not live on their tribal land and they largely use government provided resources.
    Very little, if anything, in the Treaty has any relevance to their day to day lives.

  Maybe have a referendum on whether we can have a referendum on the Treaty.
  The reason Maori are dead against this is the post 1975 Waitangi Tribunal re-written Treaty had “forestry and fisheries” added in 1989 by Sir Hugh Kawharu. This was NOT in the original Maori Treaty of the Littlewood Draft.
  Without “forestry and fisheries” the Gravy Train will stop.
  Now with so much being written about the Treaty there is a huge amount of dis-information (false or modified information knowingly and deliberately shared to cause harm or achieve a broader aim.) on the google machine. Words like “partnership” deliberately included is one example.
  Back to this ‘violence’ thing. John Tamihere is one stirring the pot more than others. He has become dangerous, as have idiots like Rawiri Waititi.

It has struck me that now that Tamatha Paul is entering parliament on the Green list, that means a sitting councilor leaving WCC, so won’t that cause a by-election?

No one seems to be talking about the expense this causes.

  rouppe: Tamatha Paul is entering parliament solely because she won Wellington Central. She was not on the Green Party list.
  
  She told Nick Mills (the host of Wellington Mornings) on Monday, 16 October, that she will resign as a city councillor in mid-November (presumably once the new government is in place).
  
  Under section 120(1)(b) of the Local Electoral Act, a by-election must take place not later than 89 days after the electoral officer has been notified of her vacancy. That means it will be held soon after mid-February – perhaps in March.
  
  Why should anyone be talking about the expense this causes? Council by-elections occur semi-regularly, all round the country, for any number of reasons. They cost what they cost.
  
  Are you suggesting Tamatha Paul had no business standing for parliament? Where are you coming from with your “expense this causes” comment?

      No, she is not “still on the list”. When the seats are allocated to parties next week, the first three Green seats will go to the Electorate winners, then the remaining seats will be allocated to List candidates, starting with Marama Davidson and James Shaw (and skipping over Swarbrick and Genter).       Your third sentence is just your prejudiced opinion. This time last year, Paul had no expectation of being an MP anytime soon. At this election, she chose not to go on the list; it was Wellington Central (her patch*) or bust – she would remain a local councillor.

        Wrong, Steve. Tabitha is a career politician. From student politics to Council to parliament. No doubt she has the UN in her sights at some point. She’s a self important, know-nothing drone and parasite.
        
        Where I do agree with you is that although her sights were always set on parliament, she would not have had a high expectation in 2022 of winning a seat at the last election.

The labour government has created policies for terrible mental health for children in schools by mandating pronouns and gender instruction.
The proof is everywhere in the community with kids expressing confusion at hundreds of times the rate before this government.
The Melons Bay school pronouns scandal is an example, where the children are being forced into the lie.

It would seem that this indication that Linwood was named as another target as the attacks started was information not made public before yesterday and so was what surprised so many in court and is the exact point missed by Winston.

And what of the response of the other roughly 29 recipients of the message sent by Tarrant?

  That is flat out wrong. The Royal Commission reported on the “warning” emails which included that Linwood would be a target.

    A detailed report, but on a quick glance it seems to contain some Orwellian suggestions, such as:
    
    Success will require public knowledge of current risks and threats and a simple pathway to allow people to report concerning behaviours or incidents to a single point within the Public sector …
    
    Examples of such behaviour it cites include “making jokes about committing crimes or harmful acts”.
    
    If we need such restrictions, and new bureaucrats to monitor potential terrorism, then we also need some sort of Terrorism Control Ombudsman, to whom citizens can appeal against bureaucratic over-zeal.
    
    If anti-terrorism controls stifle democracy, then terrorists win.

  1. You have 2 days to start releasing hostages. Alive and unharmed.
  2. you have 1 week to release all of the hostages. Alive and unharmed.
  3. If you comply, we will cease hostilities.
  4. If you do not, we will not.
  
  I believe a ground invasion would turn significant world opinion against them fairly quickly.
  
  This way, upper hand offers a way out. Failure is then down to Hamas.

    Israel should permanently annex 1km² of Gaza for every hostage not released in next 24hrs. Maybe another 10 hectares for every missile launched.
    Same rules for West bank, Syria and Lebanon.
    
    At same time they could forcibly relocate Gazans to any territories that fire missiles or mortars at Israel, say 1000 per missile, and not allow them to return.
    
    Hamas and perhaps Gazans on average don’t appear to care about lives lost (Allahs will, Jihad gets you into paradise etc), but they do appear to care about possession of land.

With all of the horror stories in our media over recent years, particularly since 9/11, I found this to be an interesting read.

The Attention Economy
One of the major problems we face in society is that everyone is constantly clamoring for our attention, and frequently to get that attention they chose the most outrage provoking message possible. This in turn shifts our culture from one that hungers for the truth and can appreciate the subtle nuances in arguments to a tribal one that wants brief soundbites to describe issues which say one side (your tribe) is right and the other sides is wrong.

People are bombarded with so much media be it audio, video or a combination. Screens everywhere, speakers everywhere, the noise is deafening and I believe in many ways, responsible for this era that seems to be full of hopelessness and despair.
Angry people everywhere, wars everywhere, terrorism everywhere.

The author does a great job, talking about the impacts of dopamine and seratonin on the brain. That food manufacturers and media creators deliberately create these addictive attributes to the products they create.

It is my belief that the susceptibility to this form of reality is a result of the nervous system becoming weakened from our modern environment. For instance:

•Many vaccines and pharmaceuticals are neurotoxic.

•Working with computers (and poor sleep) fatigues the nervous system.

•Our sedentary lifestyles prevent us from connecting to our bodies and circulating the fluids within it.

•We have much less social interaction now and no longer directly activat the parts of the central nervous system that crave human connection.

A very good read and it has certainly made me think hard about my own lifestyle.

The New Zealand Herald tells us that up to October 20 Dr Lauren Dickason has received $700,000 in legal aid.
In 2021 Dr Dickason killed her three daughters in Timaru shortly after the family arrived from South Africa.
The story’s tone is less breathlessly indignant than when the Herald ran a similar story a few weeks ago on the Jaz brothers, in Christchurch.
I have no objection to public money going to pay for her defence. Or anybody’s defence. Even Brenton Harrison Tarrant’s.
Lawyers are expensive. Legal Aid helps people to defend themselves.
Dr Dickason’s case is tragic. It was right, in my mind, that she should have access too the best brains possible who might be explain what and why she killed her girls.
I’m not sure, then, why the Herald printed this story. If it’s to do it’s job and make the information to the readers it purports to serve then fine.
Good to know.
If it’s to manufacture public indignation – which was the tone of the similar Danny and Roberto Jaz story – then maybe the media outlet’s ought to reconsider.
A fair suck of the sav before the Old Beak is surely something we – and we like to think we’re civilised and fair – should be proud of.

  The legal process is far far too expensive for the benefit it delivers to the population. All the processes bound up in 200 years of tradition has costs out of reach of 95% of population – making it unbalanced and unjust and exploitable by deep pockets like Kim dot com or that nutty Colin Craig. And for high level businesses it means that almost every multi-billion dollar deal is likely to be litigated to some extent owing to small relative cost. This system does not produce better justice than I can discern due to the power/wealth imbalances – where simply being involved in legal proceedings can bankrupt you. Juries are frequently numpties (as in Bain retrial), and rules of evidence are bullshit in denying decision makers access to pertinent info.
  
  Ideally we could find a way of stripping out 90% of legal process to arrive at a more affordable and fast system, and perhaps require a shared pool of money between defense and prosecution (eg 50% of every legal dollar spent has to be given to other side for them to match you). Perhaps AI in a few years will be able to offer truly ‘fair’ unbiased justice without all the overheads.

    1) A police decision whether or not to charge does not set any sort of “precedent”.
    2) The defence of necessity is available when there is “a belief formed on reasonable grounds of imminent peril of death or serious injury”, so that one was bullshit
    3) The lawyer also apparently submitted that the defendant was charged “because she was trans”
    I have no problems with lawyers putting forward any reasonably and legally available defence on behalf of their clients, but if Stuff accurately reports what this lawyer said, it must come perilously close to conduct unbecoming a lawyer.
    I also observe that all these protesters and activists who believe they have a moral right to breach the law in support of their causes seem to have little compunction about grovelling to the law if they think it can help them evade responsibility.
    Those who choose to break the law as an act of civil disobedience have to accept the consequences or they simply undermine any moral justification for their acts.

On the Seven Sharp TV programme this evening, there was a story about human waste pollution on Auckland beaches and in the water.
Two men were shown taking water samples and talking about testing processes of same. It was quite a casual segment – no worries that human poo is polluting the beaches making some subject to signage about no swimming.
Where are the Green, Labour and Whanau parties on this? Not a peep out of them.
Contrast this with the hue and cry from them if this was one of “our waterways” in the rural sector. We would never hear the end of it – farmers being environmental vandals and farm animals terrible polluters.
The double standards and prejudice on show here are staggering – illustrated by some academic numpty from Otago University jumping to conclusions a few weeks ago and claiming that pollution in Queenstown was due to farm animals when that was not true – just an anti farming beat-up.
The Green Party, in particular, is a sham.
