    Yeah I saw Bishop got a slap down for being passionate about something – well, not just ‘something’, but the wilful murder of more than a thousand Jews. Last time was this passionate, ironically, was about a similarly Fascist action, forcing untested medical treatments on an entire nation’s population.

        More relevant is who authorised or decided NZ’s vote in the UN last Friday on the Gaza war.
        
        NZ voted for the UN resolution for a truce, while similar countries. including Australia, Canada, and the UK, abstained.
        
        Those against, as well as the US and Israel, included Fiji, Tonga, and Papua New Guinea.
        
        Given NZ is between governments, who decided how NZ would vote?

    But look at Jacinda’s government. Jacinda did not oversee her Ministers sufficiently meaning her government was in a big mess leading up to the election – so much so that her position became untenable and she knew it.
    Chris Luxon does not want to end up in a similar position in 2026. He needs to exercise oversight over his Ministers (usually at Caucus and Cabinet meetings) but not so far as to be micro-managing things.

      I was under the impression that Ardern totally controlled her Ministers and that they were afraid of her and what she would do if the did not do what she said – that applied to her staff too !
      Her Chief of Staff was very powerful to0 if they did not do what she said or did.

    There does need to be discipline when in government. One of the major reasons the outgoing Labour mob got a toe in the posterior from the voters was a serious lack of discipline from ministers.
    
    National will need be mindful of not having loose cannons sounding off. Also Bishop isn’t the National Foreign Affairs spokesperson (Brownlee is).

    I disagree.
    
    Chris Bishop is a very senior National MP and will be a very senior Minister. He can’t opine on New Zealand’s foreign policy in a way that is different to the official line, which had already been stated by the Leader.
    
    No Prime Minister, from either side of the political divide, would allow senior ministers to set out their own views of foreign policy in a way that is different to the official line. Cabinet Collective Responsibility!
    
    In this instance all western nations have a pretty consistent line. 1) Hamas committed atrocities, 2) Israel has the right of self defence, 3) Israel must act in accordance with the laws of armed conflict, 4) Humanitarian supplies must be allowed through including a pause if necessary, 4) Israel must get serious about a two state solution.
    
    I would say that this is a co-ordinated response that all western countries have agreed on by consensus. It is clear that Chris Luxon has been briefed on this agreed response.
    
    Chris Bishop as an incoming senior Minister should have understood this. Well, he certainly does now.

        That is splitting hairs. Even though the new Government has yet to be formed, senior National MP’s need to act to the same standards as Ministers and accept unofficial collective responsibility. It will be interesting to see if Chris Luxon leaves Chris Bishop at no 3, or drop him a few places. As for junior National MP’s they need to abide by Keith Holyoake’s advice and breathe through their noses for the first three years. They also need to abide by Jonathan Hunt’s (former Labour speaker) advice to find out how the place works.

        What is wrong with the NATO Plus (Turkey excepted) nations agreeing on a common line?
        
        They know the rest of the world will either be neutral or will effectively back Hamas.
        
        The western nations have historically got Israel’s back, for fairly obvious reasons. When 1,400 Israelis have been slaughtered (equivalent to 50,000 in the US in 9/11) then surely the western nations are not going to abandon Israel. They won’t want Israel to go crazy, hence Biden’s statements about US reactions after 9/11, but they will understand Israel is going to react at a level unparalleled in recent years.

        How can a nation still be described as a civilised, if they decide the laws of armed conflict no longer apply. That was what the Nazis did when they invaded Russia. Seen as the most brutal invasion of the last 100 years.
        Even if Hamas breaches the laws of war that is not a free pass to then disregard them in response. In the same way the Police don’t stop being bound by the law when dealing with depraved murderers.

Wellington City Council these days is in the news for all the wrong reasons. That presents an opportunity for a coordinated plan for a different council in 2025. Fewer ideological flakes recklessly spending OPM. More sensible folk looking out for that OPM and stopping the city’s ongoing descent into unliveable.

    Part of the reason for Wellington voters going red and especially green is they don’t think they have skin in the game if – for example – they are not paying tax or if they are renters.
    
    There is an opportunity to change the skin in the game. Like when they complain about rental prices or conditions they are referred to council spending decisions / regs, government compliance mandates / regs and the massive cost increase in emergency and social housing due to new risks for owners.
    
    Labour did a good job with its relentless slogans past few years until voters stopped believing them – 9 years of neglect, warm dry home is a human right etc. Those who want to change that narrative could take a leaf or two out of that playbook.

  As you know, I have been telling the Right for several years now, that it is their fault that Wellingtonians continue to elect Lefty councils. If the Right do not get seriously organised over summer, and if they are not up and running by Easter, or soon after, nothing will change in October 2025.
  
  The Right need to have a right-wing/conservative grouping comprising a core number (say, four in each ward) of recognisably high-quality candidates, out their campaigning by mid-2024, to ensure their names are thoroughly in the forefront of people’s minds come election time.
  
  The trick for the Right is to give those right-leaning voters who don’t vote in local Wellington elections, a reason to do so; to get their participation rate up as high as possible. That means high-profile candidates.
  
  Will the gauntlet be thrown down? Good question. Will sufficiently high-profile, quality, candidates come forward? I suspect not.

We used to make black powder, various bombs, and even experimented with a mixture of potassium chlorate and sulphur, which when struck with a hammer produced an almighty bang (and decent recoil on the hammer). We put that mixture in percussion cap tins and placed same on the railways. BOOM. Very, very unwise, and very, very dangerous. But things that go bang are always fun when you’re a kid.

  Fireworks go off pretty much every weekend here year round.
  
  I see no reason why you should be able to let them off in a residential area.
  
  And they are so boring now. Up they go and boom, right over someone else’s house. All hours of the night.
  
  I usually buy some to let off outside the main culprits houses on my way to golf at 6.30am. I figure it might help the deplorables to get up early and have a productive day. Or at least get into their hangovers early. You know, maybe make some better life choices.

      National attempted something like this, but I don’t think it was very successful. If another baby was born while on benefits, the parent was required to be work ready when the little one was 12 months old, provided the next youngest was at least 5. The idea being for the family to be on the same footing as a working parent.
      
      Bit hazy on details, but something like that.
      
      There is the UK example where child tax credits are limited to 2 children. Maybe here Working for Families, Accommodation Supplement?

Hamas Official: More Attacks Until Israel Annihilated. A War With Only One Winner.
Could it be a re-run of the Historical “100 Years War”.

A senior Hamas official accused Israel of occupying Palestinian land and vowed that his terrorist group will continue its attacks until the Jewish homeland is annihilated.

Ghazi Hamad, a member of Hamas’ decision-making political bureau, said Hamas will commit more attacks on Israel.

“Israel is a country that has no place on our land,” Hamad said during an interview on Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation International (LBCI). “We must remove that country because it constitutes a security, military, and political catastrophe to the Arab and Islamic nation, and must be finished. We are not ashamed to say this, with full force.”

The LBCI host asked Hamad whether his accusation of Israeli occupation referred to the Gaza Strip, where Israel Defense Forces currently are fighting Hamas.

“No, I am talking about all the Palestinian lands,” he said.

“Does that mean the annihilation of Israel?” the host asked.

“Yes, of course,” Hamad answered.

Hamas terrorists attack Israel on Oct. 7. More than 1,400 Israelis have been killed and more than 200 hostages were taken to Gaza.

“The existence of Israel is illogical,” Hamad said. “The existence of Israel is what causes all that pain, blood, and tears. It is Israel, not us. We are the victims of the occupation. Period.

“Therefore, nobody should blame us for the things we do. On Oct. 7, Oct. 10, Oct. 1,000,000 — everything we do is justified.”

Hamas termed the sneak attack on Israel “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.”

“We must teach Israel a lesson, and we will do this again and again,” Hamad said. “The Al-Aqsa Flood is just the first time, and there will be a second, a third, a fourth because we have the determination, the resolve, and the capabilities to fight.

“Will we have a price to pay? Yes, and we are ready to pay it. We are called a nation of martyrs, and we are proud to sacrifice martyrs.”

Hamad claimed his terrorists “did not want to harm civilians.”

“There were complications on the ground, and there was a party in the area with [a civilian] population,” he said. “It was a large area, across 40 kilometers …”

Hamad earlier this week stormed out of a BBC interview after being pressed to explain how it was justifiable to murder families in their homes while they slept.

What a sad story, about the eighty-year-old now in prison for killing his wife of sixty years and then attempting suicide rather than facing life separated from her as a result of her impending transfer into dementia care. Apparently the onset of dementia isn’t grounds for assisted dying, so they were left having to do it themselves and naturally he made a poor job of it. Surely we can do better

        That’s terrible. Over 300,000 people died – but only about 4% of those got to take control and choose the time and the manner of their dying. That’s over 280,000 people who died at a time, and in a way, that they didn’t want.
        
        We are all going to die. From the tone of some of the anti-assisted-dying rhetoric, one would think that the alternative to assisted dying was, not dying. It isn’t. People who aren’t assisted still die, but they do so in ways not of their choosing. Personally I very much hope that when I go, it will be with formal and legally sanctioned assistance directed by my own choice. What’s your preference?

      He needed help. Not help murdering his wife and committing suicide, but help coming to terms with the reality and enormity of his situation (I won’t pretend it’s an easy one). It’s not truly compassionate to wash our hands of the situation by giving the option of just ending it all. Compassion literally means “suffer with another”. To be compassionate therefore requires that we share in suffering. Assisted murder is not sharing in the suffering; so it is not actually compassionate. It’s an abrogation of our responsibility to one another.

Anyway, one such gay man for Palestine received a swift lesson when he took a “pride flag” and joined a pro Palestinian rally in London. No surprise, he was immediately set upon. The flag was destroyed. It is not clear what happened to the flag bearer. Hopefully he had the sense to run far away.

  A quick Google check gives the following numbers:
  
  30th June 2017: 48,900 public servants
  31st March 2023: 62,710 public servants
  
  August 2023: 27,000 public servants in Wellington alone.
  
  So, an increase of nearly 14,000 public servants during the last 2 Labour-led terms.
  
  How many of these would be front-line nurses, doctors, police, teachers etc ?
  Bugger-all I would think: most will have been stuffed into back-offices to shuffle papers and reduce the unemployment figures.
  
  All the new government is proposing is to return to more logical levels.

Study predicts hundreds of jobs: North Taranaki Midweek.
A new study of potential jobs in offshore wind estimates that just one project in South Taranaki could create work for hundreds of people.

Most of the planning and operational work could be done in New Zealand but tens of thousands of job hours required for the construction of towers, rotors, and the foundation the turbines sit on are most likely to be completed offshore.
For the sake of the study, the operational phase was set at 30 years, after which the turbines are either removed, or repowered – essentially replaced with new towers.
In 2019, when Labour ended new offshore oil and gas exploration, it stated there were about 4700 people directly employed by the sector.

  IRW, having been involved in project advisory on various energy projects, the two forms of energy generation that do not create jobs in any significant numbers are wind farms & solar power farms.
  
  Reality with many types of infrastructure development projects, when tangible benefits are not that obvious, flowery rhetoric with unquantifiable forecasts (usually jobs that will flow, and economic benefits) are the order of the day.
  
  When you get that, you get a lemon or white elephant.
  
  Examples of this are Crossrail (London, UK) & CRL (Auckland).

  Any idiot can “create jobs”. Make it a legal requirement for everybody to get their hair professionally cut fortnightly and you’ll create loads of jobs for barbers and hairdressers. Ban the use of mechanical diggers in construction and you’ll create loads of jobs for men with spades. Ban spades and you’ll create even more jobs for men with spoons, probably women as well since they’d likely be no less inefficient.

Remember how the US suffered high death rates ‘from’ covid? No they didn’t.

And they said, ‘We put far too many people on intubated ventilators.’ So then I actually posted on Twitter at the time and said, ‘Hey, I’m what I’m hearing from Wuhan is that they made a big mistake in putting people on intubated ventilators for an extended period. And that this is actually what is damaging the lungs, not COVID. It’s the treatment. The cure is worse than the disease.’ And they, people, yelled at me and said, I’m not a doctor. I’m like, Yeah, but I do make spaceships with life support systems.”

In the US, under their health insurance system, hospitals were paid $8000 when a patient was admitted assessed as having covid. If they put them on a ventilator they ‘earned’ $32,000.

“Hospital administrators might well want to see COVID-19 attached to a discharge summary or a death certificate. Why? Because if it’s a straightforward, garden-variety pneumonia that a person is admitted to the hospital for – if they’re Medicare – typically, the diagnosis-related group lump sum payment would be $5,000. But if it’s COVID-19 pneumonia, then it’s $13,000, and if that COVID-19 pneumonia patient ends up on a ventilator, it goes up to $39,000.”

Just as bad was the UK which doubled the use of Midazolam and morphine on elderly patients during the pandemic. Midazolam suppresses the respiratory system.

All sedative drugs suppress the central nervous system in a dose-dependent manner. Typically this is accompanied by a reduction in CO2 responsiveness in the medullary respiratory center. Loss of airway control and respiratory depression are the most common serious adverse effects associated with sedative drug administration. The greater the degree of sedation, the greater the degree of respiratory depression. Respiratory depression increases when combining sedative drugs or when using large doses of a single drug.

People were killed by the treatment they were given. In some cases, it looks like murder. Especially the intubating for money in the US. No, not all, but it was a perverse incentive in a for profit health system such as Medicare in the US.

  Dad had 3 open heart surgeries in the 70s. He told me many times to avoid ventilators if I could. You can’t rest, you are at the will of timed, forced breathing. Some like to just stop breathing for say 10 to 15 seconds. A ventilator will not let you do that. Just slowly wears you out.

    That’s sad Steve. One of the few positives I have gotten out of the last 3 years is, I’ve learned more about my own health system and how to look after it.
    I’ve also developed a very healthy (pun intended) skepticism of the health system.
    
    Not one of the experts and nobody at our local medical centre ever suggested that diet, exercise and exposure to vitamin D via sunlight could help ensure our immune systems would be in a better position to deal with any virus that might come along.
    
    We were all told to wait for the ‘miracle vaccine’.
    
    The head of our local facility who I regarded as a friend prior to this said exactly that to me when I expressed concern at the speed at which the jab was brought into use. I was basically told, don’t be stupid, it’ll be amazing……
    
    She’s now retired. Funny that.

Re the revelations by Peters last week re events leading up to the Christchurch mosque attacks.

Winston was right when he said information emerged that we did not know about until the inquest, but he did not include enough details for a full understanding of what it is we learned.

The media grabbed the simplistic and literal interpretation of Peters’s tweet, jumping to Ardern’s defence using emotive language to lambast Peters, rather than delving any deeper. They emotively editorialised their headlines and commentary without doing the research. But is anyone surprised?

They glossed over it and muddied the waters by saying that Peters denied that Ardern put out a statement, which is wrong; he was questioning why the ‘full facts’ were not revealed by Ardern.

Verbatim wording from Ardern’s original statement, bolded for emphasis.

“I was one of more than 30 recipients of a manifesto that was mailed out nine minutes before the attack took place…it did not include a location, it did not include specific details. I’m advised that within two minutes of its receipt in at least my office, it was conveyed directly to Parliamentary security.”

(I understand the two minutes was not correct; it was more like eight)

However, we now know she misled us when she said it did not include location or specific details.

From the inquest it was reported:

The parliamentary staffer scanned the manifesto during the [111] call and picked out information including the terrorist’s name, age, weapon he was intending to use and location of the attack.

Approximately 24 hours lapsed until Ardern gave her statement: time enough to know this crucial information. It is just not believable that the information was not known to her when she faced the nation.

  No wrong. Jacinda may have issued a statement that was incorrect. However the Royal Commission reported in detail on the email to the PMs Office, and that it included location details. In other words, the inquest uncoverd nothing already included in the report of the Royal Commission. Winston Peters was dead wrong.

Toyota is claiming they have new EV battery technology which will be massively better and cheaper and they will be rolling out in 2026/7.

Sounds a bit dangerous to make announcements like that – it can cause massive overhangs and lost sales. Why would anyone want to pay HIGHER prices for a worse car in 2023-2025 when there are cheaper and better cars in the pipe?

But the battery claims are interesting: 1200km range and a 10 minute charge time (from 10 to 80%).

Since a car uses approx 150Wh per km, a 1200km range would need approx 180kWh. That’s massive.

Charging that from 10 to 80% in 10 minutes would require about 900kW of electricity. That’s close to 1MW. It is enough power for 1000 NZ houses (at average power consumption)!

So clearly the reality is going to be very different. No power grid can sustain a charging infrastructure like that.

Meanwhile my gas guzzler can fill from empty to full in well under a minute using standard refilling equipment. Right now. I don’t have to wait until 2026/7.

  Hama is picking up from the use of small drones as an explosives delivery platform in the Ukraine.
  They drop them right into the hatches of tanks, or attach a single RPG round and fly right into a tank.
  And troops sheltering in trenches or behind cover get a fragmentation grenade, let alone standing in the open in a bunch like that.
  Surprised there doesn’t seem to be much counter measures looking for, or jamming, or intercepting these smaller commercial-civilian type drones yet, despite them being used as improvised weapons.
  Drones need to intercept other drones, attach a claymore mine to the interceptor.
  
  These armed drones seem to loiter around battlefields, and I have never seen one been noticed by the folk on the ground in any of the footage from the Ukraine. Just a little background noise probably covers them at such distances, and it is like a Skylark singing – you need to listen out for it, and then try to find a small dot on the sky…..yep, just another dangerous aspect on top off IEDs, booby traps and snipers which ground troops can expect.

      That is good news. It looked like a very small device, and perhaps dropped into sand. The damage was something I wondered about, as it knocked over several people – good news if they can live and maybe even get to grips with Hamas another day.
      This is why the Ukrainians dropping devices into confined spaces like tanks hatches, or even the stovepipe of a shed sheltering Russians (like I have been told) is the way: it would maximise the effectiveness of smaller explosives.

      She was a soldier. When you have a uniform on, and are on the battlefield, then nobody cares how old you are and what you’ve got in your pants.
      
      Israel has many female soldiers. Apart from the fact that conscription of women is shorter, those that get into combat roles are treated no differently from the men. Some get killed – same as the men.
      
      Calling out that they are anything other than soldiers is asking for special treatment etc. That is one of the quickest ways to ruin an army.
      
      Israel has not fallen into that hole. Females are expected to perform at the same level.

    The drones have changed warfare forever. In Ukraine the conflict has stalemated with no significant targets within 15-20km of front line safe from drones (this is one-way range of drones). Tanks and Russian Artillery have to be closer to be useful and are almost all quickly wiped out by this, nullifying their utility. Troops dig in deep and try to move around at night when bomb FPV drones aren’t operating, and basically do WW1 style assaults of a few men at a time over no-mans land to make very expensive small gains in territory without presenting a target for long to drones or remaining artillery.
    
    The first AI drones are starting to enter service – where AI vision and control improves terminal accuracy of drone once target is selected when transmission lag and jamming can screw up FPV, and will see the drone-denial strip extend even further from front lines.
    
    Ukraine has been very short on tanks and artillery shells etc compared to Russia (using about 5-7k a day on each side), but drones have made them mostly obsolete anyway, and are cheaper and easier to source than shells. Each side is now using close to 1000 FPV drones a day, and it’s only increasing up. Likely within a year even moving around at night won’t be survivable and no-mans land will be 10-20 km wide.
    
    The last remaining conventional weapons of much use are longer range surface to surface guided missiles like HIMARS and ATACMS and large air launched glide bombs of 50-70km range, which the Russians have but the mostly airforceless Ukraine don’t – and big bombs are really the only way of clearing deeply dug in troops.
    
    Unless or until Ukraine get ability to hurl much bigger bombs much further distances to clear dug-in defenses they are not going to make any significant progress against Russia. But neither are Russia getting anywhere against Ukraine. It’s all headed for expensive and brutal stalemate, as in long years of WW1

      Throwing penny packets of men and vehicles at the enemy isn’t going to change anything, drones or no drones.
      To see the kind of advances that the Russians made during the start of the war they had to sacrifice the better part of their vehicle fleet which was in the tens of thousands.
      Giving Ukraine one hundred of this and two hundred of that is not sufficient. They need tanks and vehicles being delivered in the thousands, constantly, and no one has the political will for it.

        The winning lesson of WWI was that to break through well dug in defenders you needed heavy saturation bombing of a small area for extended periods to kill everything.
        
        Ukraine need the ability to drop 10’s of thousands of heavy bombs accurately on Russian defenses or millions of artillery shells or 10s of millions of mortar bombs. There’s just no substitute for explosive tonnages.
        
        Western artillery shell production is taking too long to ramp up – will take years.
        
        It could be done with millions of bigger and ideally night-vision enabled FPV drones, which leans on existing global electronics industry and could be done in maybe a year.
        
        Or it could be most easily and immediately by supplying 100’s of fighters and pilots (or really any small private jet that can ascend to 40000ft with 500-1000kg payload, if could retrofit some weapons pylons) and 10’s of thousands of $30k JDAM glide bombs (the US produces 30000 a year). Staying well back from front line to avoid missiles.
        
        But west seems intent on dragging out conflict as long as possible. Drip feeding Ukraine just enough to keep them in the fight, possible reasons:
        -Avoid nuclear escalation.
        -Attrite Russia’s military and economic power as much as possible.
        -Keep war going to maximize armament industry profits.

    The Royal name change in 1917 was a little more complicated than that, MCos.
    
    Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was the family name of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband. Their eldest son, Edward VII, continued with his name, as did Edward VII’s son, George V, until World War 1.
    
    Anglification of the family name, especially during war, was an intelligent step. “Saxe-Coburg-Gotha” was a helluva mouthful. Besides, “Gothas” were the German bombers that attacked London.
    
    Modification or change of family names to suit the majority language or culture of the country is widespread.
    
    In NZ during World War 1, some “Walters” families became “Waters” and some “Mullers” became “Millers”.
    
    Some Asian current surnames in NZ will gradually either be modified or changed.
    
    Polynesian names containing apostrophes will likely also be modified within a generation or two.
    
    The present vogue for changing names from English to Maori is against the usual trend of minority language names being modified to be closer to the dominant, majority language.

Barnes and the TMO will be debated for a long time. I came across this article about upgrading yellow to red.
“However, for instances of foul play, like Cane’s yellow card, the decision as to whether a card is upgraded or not does not lie with the referee or the TMO, it lies with the Foul Player Review Bunker and a Foul Play Review Official (FPRO).”
This is something I, and many others did not know. The FPRO would not be known by most TV audiences.

Why publish the name? And if the Court suppressed publication why wasn’t that reported?

First, she deserves to feel people’s contempt for her cruelty.

Second, some research indicates cruelty to animals can be a predictor of violence to humans – and this woman is a mother.

Is this coming for New Zealand?

Canada is holding immigration near-steady as it grapples with high inflation and a housing crisis.

The Canadian Government says it will also remove a 5 per cent “consumption tax” on construction of new rental apartments.

Reuters reports Canada (population about 38.5 million) is targeting 465,000 new residents this year, 485,000 in 2024 and 500,000 in each of 2025 and 2026.

On an equivalent per capita basis, that would mean around 58,000 immigrants for NZ this year. Canada ranks about 33rd in the world by GDP per capita, compared with NZ 42nd.

Two-thirds of Canadians live within 100km of the US border, leaving 96 per cent of the country’s area for the other third of the population.

  Annual migrant arrivals in the year ending 31 August 2023 reached an all-time high of 225,400.
  
  Our immigration is running about 48 per cent of Canada’s, while we have about 13 per cent of its population. On this per capita basis, our immigration is running at a rate nearly four times that of Canada, which is cutting back its intake to battle inflation and a housing crisis.
