New Zealand is moving towards handing the World Health Organisation power that should never given to foreign, unelected bureaucrats.

        Like all UN Conventions, It will come into force through “Tacit Acceptance”.
        Not always however.
        This will normally require a certain Percentage , Say 60% then given a Time frame , Say 2 years before it will be ratified etc.
        Without reading the rules regarding WHO Pandemic action, I can only surmise this is how NZ will be entered into Force into the WHO convention as all member states.

  I don’t follow how the WHO could force New Zealand citizens to be locked down during a pandemic. The WHO would need the power of the state, the police etc to enforce it. If the Government of the day in New Zealand just said “no we are not doing that” what could the WHO do?

    As members of the UN we are obliged to follow their rules and they can and will enforce them by various means such as trade embargo, calling in loans or imposing higher interest rates, etc. through the Bank of International Settlements.

      The only way the UN can apply sanctions is by way of Security Council Resolutions. There are 5 veto states in the SG.
      So basically the WHO can’t sanction states.

        Nonsense, Wayne. Unless you are hinging your argument on the word ‘apply’. As as been noted above, New Zealand could well experience sanction-like responses from other nations doing the tacit bidding of the WHO.
        
        Exit the WHO, and the UN. Do it now.
        
        These increasingly rapacious organisations seek to subjugate national sovereignty at every turn. The future under their plans is bleak, centrally managed totalitarianism and we would be well advised to reject every attempted push in that direction.
        
        I am, of course, waiting for your inevitable response that this would be “political suicide” or some such spineless flannel.

        It’s the boiling frog syndrome Wayne Mapp. We are witnessing true representative democracy being dismantled, one degree at a time. The vast majority of present (and apparently former) MPs can’t see any problem with this?

    But I think the concern is more domestic, it gives the same people the chance to repeat what they did with UNDRIP and He Puapua, and set up a draconian framework for removing rights from citizens every time the WHO presses a button.

      Not only that but the courts use these international agreements as authority in their decisions. If we’ve signed up to something, we have a responsibility to uphold it. A government would have to abandon the agreement for the court not to rely upon it.
      
      That’s where the WHO and others get their policing powers: indirectly from the countries who agree to abide by their edicts.
      
      I don’t think NZ should be signatory to any international undertakings unless they are approved by the voters directly. Every three years at election time an additional voting paper could be included listing the agreements we have been invited to participate in during the previous three years. Just tick the ones you like.

Coalition talks- just what areNZ First and Act up to and should National be worried, the last two days have apparently been Fruitful in terms of National being able to pull together its three- legged stool .

  Against Peters Seymour is a boy who thinks he is being big but not really.

      Co-Governance, sound an innocent name but it is anything but.
      Appointed Maori with the power of veto is NOT Co-Governance. Maybe Luxon does not understand or does not want to understand.

        There are NO Principles in the Treaty, just Principles introduced by idiot Geoffrey Palmer in 1989. They have no defined meaning, which was the idea. Now there are additional Principles – a total of 31, that still mean nothing.
        The Treaty needs to be changed back from the rogue James Freeman post 1975 version to the 1840 Henry Littlewood version.
        It is a simple document that has been hijacked and corrupted to create a Gravy Train. NZ has been living these lies for nearly 50 years.
        Two generations – that is why Maori get so angry. Post Waitangi Tribunal Treaty version is all they know.

    I am not so sure he is third cab off the rank. Back in 2008 Prime Minister John Key had both Act and the Māori Party for support. He only needed one or the other to have the similar majority required to pass legislation. That allowed him to zig-zag left and right.
    
    Mr Luxon needs both Act and Nz1. I would call one urban liberal and the other social conservative as a short cut description to their policy difference. But they are both to the right of National and more radical on, say, race based preferences, and welfare, and in general. They are not having to straddle the middle voters as Mr Luxon must and is his want to do.
    
    There is no zig-zag here. Only zag. And Mr Peters and Mr Seymour are well smart enough to figure that out.

      These are really good points.
      
      A lot of the commentariat both in the MSM and on political blogs such as here at KB has been about Peters and Seymour disliking each other. Politics frequently has some rather unlikely partnerships. I would never see a political bromance between Peters and Seymour but there are numerous policy areas where they have a common interest that will override personal considerations.
      
      Re the MSM, a lot of the comment and opinion doesn’t allow for the fact that politics is many shades of grey and not just black and white. One who falls into seeing politics as B & W too often is Heather du Plessis-Allan. It is much more complex .

  I agree with Chuck. If ACT and NZF can get their shit together they will put a break on the Nats wokeness and force them to dial back on the climate change scam and put a spine in the Nats to face up and deal with the race problem this country faces. The Maori and other Elites must be put back in their box and the lid shut. They must not be allowed to dictate as they have done for the past 6 years.
  BTW I just love how the MSM are interviewing themselves with nothing coming out of the talks between the 3 Parties. After 6 years of a Government that treated the MSM as its Propoganda Department it is a pleasant change.   Speaking of mask wearing, I have seen articles on the presence of plastic fibre in lungs and micro plastic in the blood, attributed to mask wearing. Does mask wearing have the potential to create another form of lung disease? Time will tell.

        I have wondered about the “quality” of the masks ever since I saw a video of a backstreet operation in India churning out “surgical” masks.
        
        What fabric were they using? Was there a standard to what was an acceptable surgical mask during the pandemic?
        
        Hospitals must have some standard over what has been used in the past to prevent infections during surgery, so I’d say that the two are not comparable.

        As I understand it fibre fragmentation increases with time. Medical staff are meant to change their masks frequently – approximately every 20 minutes. Highly unusual for them to wear one mask for 3 – 6 hours like many school children were expected to nor do they put it in the pocket after use and wear again the next day.

        Asbestos is fine unless the fibres become loose. Factory roof I worked in started shedding fibres pretty badly during big storms. After getting the professionals in to do a major cleanup the owner realised it was time to replace it.

This is based on their lack of knowledge of science, their blind acceptance of the ‘podium of truth’ ( excuse me while I throw up) and a weird need to find something to be anxious about. I believe, however, that we are rational beings who are willing and able to take responsibility for ourselves. But, The Greater Good is an evolutionary imperative that has been reconstructed to manipulate populations over many years. The entire pandemic is the latest manifestation of this political tool.

Wellington City is drowning in debt, with massive future liabilities for pipes & earthquake strengthening. Selling our one easily severable asset (airport shares) to pay down debt is a no-brainer.

Not for Tory. Oh no. She wants the sale proceeds to go into a ‘green investment fund’, aka a money well so her green friends can continue to suck on the public tit for cycle ways and other such things.

    Anybody who thinks that Commissioners are the answer want there heads read.
    Look at the destruction, in the name of progress, that Tauranga has been reduced to a rubble city by twice appointed Commissioners by Mahuta.
    It is a ghost city with closures and bankruptcies (except Council employees) that has happened.
    After over 20 years here it is a disgrace and very sad to what was a lovely place to live.

      I agree about Tauranga, Paulus, having lived here for 35 years after returning from a 10 year stint in Oz. But I daresay the Green mayor Tori is has/is about to demolish Wokington to a greater degree.

The seems to be quite a bit of vote recounting.
To me, the numbers should come back exactly the same. If they don’t, someone has not done their job or is cheating.
Perfect example would be Helen White/Melissa Lee. Melissa Lee behind by 107 but now only 20. So 80 instances of mis-counting. How come?
Imagine trying to run a business with people who can not balance the float at the end of the day.

  Not really. In recounts there is a focus on informal votes.
  
  If you look at Mount Albert, there were 429 informal votes:

  An informal vote could be blank, or have a picture of mickey mouse. It could also have an ambiguous marking with the ‘tick’ not clearly attributed to a candidate. These will come under scrutiny.

  You are confusing yourself Steve. The 103 was on election night, that was before any special were counted. Special were counted and the final results dropped it to 20. No evidence of miscounting, it was the specials added to the count.

  The electoral counts will never be perfect. People manually entering data onto pieces of paper then other people entering that data into a computer. Inevitably there will be errors. I would be interested to know how they try and make that more robust. Do they have a team counting and checking together as they go or two separate teams collating the data and then check to see that the same result has been achieved? One things for sure, some people will make more errors than others and how well trained the people are will make a huge difference to the outcome. I read on here prior to the election they were struggling with the staffing. That doesn’t sound like a great place to be in to have everyone well trained.

    Why is that so hard? Errors my left tit. How do you get a job like counting when you can’t count ffs?

Was there a different count (miscounting), or were special votes previously allowed, disallowed? For example those who enrolled on the day of voting. That practice for all those who didn’t have their 18th birthday that week always seem dodgy.

This is a shrewd move. By offering residency to 11,000 people Australia has in effect secured rights to hundreds of thousands of square miles of sea, plus a port facility.

NZ should do something similar.

  Australia have not annexed Tuvalu. Tuvalu retains sovereignty, so there is no change to Australian international waters.
  
  All they have is a residence agreement similar to the one they already have with NZ allowing automatic residence for citizens of Tuvalu.

Can anyone provide a relevant reason why the UN shouldn’t be taken to the international criminal court for financing terrorism and war crimes?

There is absolutely zero chance that the UN at all levels knew Hamas was taking aid money and
– funnelling it into personal bank accounts
– spending a higher % of aid money on concrete and other tunnel making products than any humanitarian programme
– had 300km of tunnels with key command points under every major hospital
– taught anti semitic hate in every UN funded school etc

???

That’s terrible that that elderly chinese couple got violently murdered in Ellerslie. There seem to be far too many acts like this happening in Auckland (and NZ) lately, and regularly relating to new immigrants. I surmise it is over money. Money lending and loan shark activity and the like. What else could it be? They look like a regular couple just trying to find a better life.

I just wonder what kind of screening process is going on at NZ Immigration to see such an increase in these terrible acts. It can only be over money. Whoever is the perpetrator should have never have been allowed into the country. We do not settle feuds in this country by stabbing people to death.

It’s interesting that that tmo in cricket is far less controversial than either rugby or football.
Another interesting thing is how much the behaviour has improved since the IPL came along. The players from opposing sides are just as likely to have been in the same franchise team somewhere round the world so they’re all mates & don’t slag each other off like they used to in the ‘good’ old days.

  I think the NZ team under McCullum led the way for international teams. When Fleming was captain he thought they needed to get better at sledging to catch up. For sure IPL made a big difference, but teams also noticed the contrast between playing NZ and the loathsome Australians.

  — By a swathe of the academic community. The same folk who, by the thousand, ran a witch-hunt against seven professors who dared challenge the Woke notion that Maori knowledge is science.
  
  – By radical Maori activists.
  
  – By Woke supporters like those who, ignoring the fact that St John Ambulance carries that name in NZ by statute, are trying to force a name change to one in Maori loan-words from English.
  
  It’s astonishing that there even is a vigorous campaign to change the country’s name surreptitiously into a language that 95 per cent of the country’s citizens do not speak.
  
  If you are speaking Maori, “Aotearoa” is appropriate. In English the name is “New Zealand”.

    One small point Jack5 – Aotearoa was never the Maori name for New Zealand. It was, at best, the name used by some Maori for the North Island.
    
    When someone asserts that Aotearoa is the Maori name for New Zealand, they are either deliberately lying or embarrassingly ignorant.
    
    What it is is a modern invention masquerading as an historical fact.

      The name New Zealand goes back to 1770. Before that it was Nieuw Zeeland, which you don’t hear anymore
      Aotearoa came into use about eighty years later
      The country was also known as Maoriland for a period of time, but it didn’t stick.
      A few people will be pleased about that
      In my first passport the country is also referred to as Nouvelle Zelande
      Thailand, quite obviously is not the name used by Thais. It’s Prathet Thai or often colloquially Siam
      India is also known as Bhārat and so on
      
      In 1868 the woksters of Rhodes Town and the adjacent Government Town amalgamated and called the city Timaru; a Māori name nobody knows the meaning of!!

    Jack, their technology cannot be faulted with the Iron Dome because without it Israel would be under constant bombing. After Oct 7th well the Israeli slaughter happened and there could be only one reply and that was to eliminate Hamas. ‘The terror group’s three top leaders alone are worth a staggering $11 billion between them and enjoy a life of luxury in the sanctuary of the emirate of Qatar’. Anyone else fed up with every second item on TV news (well TV1 at least) being prefaced with …”and just a warning. Some viewers may find the following upsetting”. For heavens sake just say right at the outset “News is not nice…don’t view if you’re easily upset”!
The we get the complete opposite with fluffy little pieces about magazine style content. Often something advertorial about them too.

In fact, according to the Australian Financial Review, “Aussie households suffered the largest fall in living standards of any advanced economy over the past year.”

Ever noticed how quickly a certain group of people scream cultural misappropriation if symbols of their culture are used by other groups but are happy to appropriate the cultural symbols of others?

Ever noticed how quick this group is to blame colonisation for their woes but are happy to indulge in all the good things that colonisation has given them?

Yet we constantly hear that they value more than others generosity and hospitality to all people. How wonderful the world would be if only they were in control etc etc etc

When you look at the gulf between reality and the marketing you have to ask, who is paying for all of this PR and why?

Iceland rocking …

The 4,000 or so people in the Iceland fishing town of Grinkdavik have been told to prepare for evacuation because of fears of volcanic eruption.

Since late October, 24,000 tremors have been registered on a peninsula just north of Grindavik, with a swarm of nearly 800 quakes between midnight and 3am today NZ time.

The Iceland Meteorological Office (IMO) said a few hours ago that seismic activity had moved towards Grinkavik.

However, the IMO says the most likely scenario now is that it will take several days (rather than hours) for magma to reach the surface.

A judge has issued a stern warning to a gang member involved in the kidnapping and assault of an innocent man, telling him to leave the victim alone and “treat him with absolute respect” once he gets out of jail, knowing the pair will likely bump into each other in the small King Country town of Te Kūiti.
