        NZ does not need to use ‘blood phosphate’ from Western Sahara (which contain undesirable amounts of cadmium). There is an ample supply of low cadmium phosphate on the seabed near NZ but the EPA refused the appropriate permit (and had a big unnecessary spendup at the applicant’s expense).

    If the word is ambiguous then the Maori Party MPs had the choice to use a word that would leave no doubt as to their intent… but they chose to be “cute,”

      This violent thug gets community service for blacking his partner’s eye and punching her an unspecified number of times when she refused to have sex with him when he was drunk.
      
      Back in 1974, Elton John’s then manager, one John Reid, got 30 days in Mt Eden for pushing a female journo over in an Auckland nightclub. The woman was not injured.
      
      Reid appealed the sentence, and it was confirmed in the High Court, the judge saying “this kind of behaviour towards women might be acceptable in the UK Mr Reid, but it’s certainly not acceptable here”

    Indeed, but as you say that is another topic entirely.
    
    I will say it bluntly, Indian landlords have a bad reputation and it is deserved. They also have a track record of being overrepresented in cases of exploitation of employees. There was recently a couple of high profile cases of liquor stores owned by Indian men paying well under the minimum wage.
    
    We see many reports of badly behaved tenants. Deservedly so. However badly behaved landlords also deserve condemnation.

      Yet it’s Indians that are are running a large percentage of local business. Look at every regional pizza hut, subway etc etc and now moving into rental properties.
      
      They have moved on from coming here and running the local dairy, mostly because they have seen an opportunity that no kiwi wants to be involved with due to high running costs, low profit and staff issues. So they pay low rates, exploit staff and give terrible service.
      
      To their credit, they find a way to make a living but it’s at the expense of something…
      
      The classic corner dairy owners used to be (and still often are as owned by multi generations) super friendly and appreciate your business. The new wave of “indian” business owners seem to lack this service element and look at you like a piece of scum to fleece for money. The end result is that kiwis will stop going there and business will be hard for them.

      BYU why does everyone expect immigrants to become model examples of western democratic liberal values as soon as their feet touch the airport tarmac? The fact is they are far more likely to bring all the attitudes and values of the land they have come from with them than turn up having had a liberal democratic epiphany. This is why any immigration policy should have preferred countries that it draws from rather than the present feelz policy we seem to employ. Multiculturalism is a failed idea and needs consigned to the dustbin of history of course rather than see the writing on the wall NZ will no doubt continue with the idea for a period of time long after the rest of the developed nations have given up on it I mean what would we do if we couldn’t angst on about the same problems as the big countries?

        I heard of a conversation where an Indian had blatantly outright lied big time to get a deal across the line. They were challenged about it, and the response was that “where I come from that isn’t regarded as lying, it’s regarded as being clever”

  I saw the headline, and before I even opened the article, I could tell you the ethnic background of the landlord, and I was dead right.
  
  With regard to the despicable exploitative habits among immigrant communities, it’s very telling just how often we see immigants subjected to exploitative working conditons by the very ethnic group they are a part of.
  
  However, I do note that there is a property management company involved, and any sanctions should also be leveled at them as well

    If you read the article, the property management company was well aware of what he was up to, and pointed out to him in an email – very clearly – that if he didn’t genuinely intend to do renovations then his actions were illegal.
    
    She even spelled out what constituted renovations to make it clear, and later testified on behalf of the evicted tenant that he had previously done the exact same thing. Hard to see what else they could’ve done, to be fair.

        As my partner has always said…..he wouldn’t touch Residential rental property with a 13ft barge pole. You’d need to be insane.
        Looks to me like the landlord in this story did absolutely nothing wrong except got caught up in the minefield of lefty legislation.

  No cause 90 day terminations will be back soon. I expect there will be a wave of termination notices.
  
  Good tenants are much less likely to be affected. However, applicants who are perceived to be risky will be better placed to be offered a tenancy. Perceived – not necessarily a risk but Labour’s tenure rules encourage landlords to err on the side of potential issues.
  
  Increased immigration will add pressure on demand, while supply will be limited or reduce if rental numbers don’t add up.

    I would have thought that long term tenants who pay the rent, are good neighbours, and take excellent care of the peppery are like gold to a landlord. I can’t see many just being evicted for no reason.

        That is quite possible mikenmildagain, though eviction is a step further than termination. However, while it might be the outcome, there are rules around rent increases and AFAIK they are not changing. If rules are adhered to and rent not paid, then termination of the tenancy is obvious and expected.

        There are existing laws around how often you can raise the rent. Once a year I believe.
        
        If you can’t manage your rental on that basis there’s something wrong with you.
        
        If you’re given that ultimatum then it’s because the landlord is raising the rent more often. While no cause terminations could occur under those circumstances, the notice period is still 90 days which means the landlord couldn’t actually raise the rent until after the tenant moved out .
        
        So the practicality of the situation is:
        * Raise rent (legally) or start tenancy.
        * After 6 months try your scenario on.
        * Tenant refuses so is issued with termination out of spite.
        * Landlord still has to wait three months.
        * Landlord then has to go through screening process, and probably wait 4 weeks for new tenants notice period
        
        End result, he’s close to the 12 months where he could raise the rent legally anyway.
        
        In other words, mm, you’re probably wrong.
        
        I’m an ex landlord (sold my last rental, settlement today) so know the value of stability

        The “pay more rent or I will evict you” is seldom used on good quality tenants.
        
        Sure, rents need to rise due to increased costs, but few would want to evict a high quality tenant and then have to find a replacement.
        
        Being a good quality tenant generally earns you an effective discount.
        
        It has been a long time since I rented, but we never had rent increases (even when living in the same place for 4 years).

      They are like gold. I know of a number of landlords and tenants who report keeping rent lower than market rates over many years for good tenants that never give them problems and look after the property as if they owned it.
      
      Landlords tend to get what they give as long as they choose wisely when selecting tenants, and once you’ve got a good one you hold onto them. A bit like an employer who knows they have an excellent employee.

      Regardless of whether tenants are good or not so good, the proposed new termination rule will not require a reason to be stated. Though not clear so far what will apply in the case of fixed term tenancies terminating before the end date.
      
      Tenancy rules are currently very complex on several fronts. Especially for tenants, but also for landlords with only a very small number of rentals.
      
      For example, at the moment owners who want to sell their rental even with perfect tenants, have to navigate rules around marketing, vacant possession, access, unconditional agreements. But wait, there’s more …..

      My daughter has had 4 differnt landlords over the years.
      2 were good, one was morally bankrupt and the 4th was batshit crazy.
      The circumstances would take too long to type out but so many WTF’s
      A brief intro…
      I want to do renovations, you have to move out for 3 weeks but you must keep paying rent over that time.
      I am now going to rent out the garage you use for your car (as was written in the agreement) for someone to live in and they will have a key to get into the house at anytime to use the toilet etc.
      The offstreet carpark you have alloted in writing, is now being rented out to someone else.
      So on and so forth.

        That’s what I used to think as well, alas the reality seems to be different, maybe it’s a lottery?
        My daughter and her flatmates took the batshit crazy landlord to the tenancy tribunal.
        I cut a long story short, the original adjudicator didn’t know his arse from his elbow and the landlord was represented by her lawyer (supposedly not allowed) and appealed twice before eventually having to accept the ruling (which was to only get their bond back in the end). The other fines were never paid.
        
        I write this to show it is not all one way traffic on these rulings

  There are often 3 sides to every story but aside from doing this to someone who has a brain tumour (nearly always fatal) is that they are both nurses at Dunedin Hospital…WTF? I’m struggling to see the other sides especially given:
  1. The woman has an almost fatal diagnosis that she advised them of prior
  2. They are both registered nurses at Dunedin Hospital
  3. They were warned by the property manager not to be nefarious
  4. Their actions show they just wanted an easier way to raise the rent by $130.
  
  Their behaviour is not what we would expect as NZ citizens and is despicable given all of the above. I don’t care what their colour or heritage is, just their actions which are despicable.

Interesting chat with an old friend. She used to be a radio advertising salesperson 15-20 years ago. She had commented about how she would have liked to have been selling advertising for the National Programme as they had such a large audience.
Fast forward to 2023 and she reckons the impact of the National Programme, outside of that insular community called Wellington, is so small.

        Radio stations were 1,2,3 or 4, being Auckland province was 1; Southern North Island together with Blenheim and Nelson were 2. The South Island between the Waitaki and the Clarence were 3. South of the Waitaki was 4. YA was as described above. YC was the concert programme. X and Z were commercial stations. For example, 1XH was a Hamilton commercial station. Then it changed to 1ZH. Gisborne, although in the Auckland province, was 2XG.
        When I mentioned the Clarence, the Conway might have been the boundary, but I am not sure.
        Whatever, but they were all rather boring until changes after Radio Hauraki came on air in 1966.

        I was a journalist with Radio NZ in Christchurch in the 1980s. In those days the newsroom supplied 3ZM, 3ZB and 3YA, and for a time there was a supposed reciprocal arrangement with TVNZ for news exchange (honoured mostly in the breach rather than in the observance). Local news bulletins were tagged on to the national news every half hour at peak times in the morning, and at lunchtime. The ZM news was read by the journalist tagged with compiling it, which I did for a year; ZB had its own dedicated news reader for peak hours (apart from reading for a couple of minutes every half hour, he sat and read a book; and at other times one of the announcers would pop in to the newsroom to do the duty. On YA, local news was tagged on to the national bulletin at 6pm weekdays, and three times a day at weekends. These were read by one of the journalists, including myself.
        
        All that local content has now vanished, sadly, since the takeover of the ZM and ZB frequencies. Local YA news is no more. The ethics and standards of the newsroom (and nationwide) were vastly different from what they have degenerated to today. “Old school” journalism still prevailed in general, and while the environment was extremely stressful, there was a comeraderie which helped to ease that. Practical jokes were rife — you had to go mad occasionally to stay sane.
        
        I was made redundant in 1988, a merciful release. I had wanted to quit some years before, but because of the above-average salary, to my sadness I didn’t have to courage to just walk away. A year’s salary as redundancy eased the pain considerably. I never went back into daily media, but turned to graphic design and later to research-based writing for several organisations. I still occasionally have nightmares based on the time with RNZ — I think it’s rather like a form of PTSD.

        Tauhuei Notts, the “X”s were the originally the pirate stations. 1XA was Radio Hauraki, and 1XI was Radio I. Originally, the “Z”s were the commercial stations of what was NZBC and they ran advertising, while the National stations did not.
        
        Broadcasting was “reformed” in 1975 into Television New Zealand and Radio New Zealand under BCNZ. At this time there were 2 TV stations under TV NZ & all the radio stations. Despite the reform in 1975, this did not stop the Muldoon govt interfering with the broadcast media.
        
        The cosy arrangements of the radio stations remained until the early 1980s, when a new band of radio pirates took to the airwaves with FM transmission. These guys operated from vans running around Auckland to avoid the P&T inspectors trying to close them down. As new technology evolved, it was getting cheaper to run radio stations, and with that we got takeovers etc and what we have today. Of the stations I grew up with in Auckland, the only ones that remain are RNZ National & Concert, Newstalk ZB, ZM Music, Radio Hauraki. The rest are new or rebranded versions of what was about in the 1980s/90s – eg MoreFM.

    For example, a Twitter feed about myocarditis in the US. The rates of myocarditis increased in 2020 before the covid vaccines were available. Then it dropped in 2021 and 2022. This is on a trend of decreasing deaths. Instead, you have people rambling on about myocarditis and vaccines and how it is contributing to all these deaths.

        Yes, covid contribute to the deaths of some people who were vulnerable and had other health issues. Just like any other respiratory illness does. People died ‘with’ covid, not ‘from’ covid. As happens with old and frail people with the flu. The cause of death will be heart failure or similar, with the infection listed as a contributing factor.
        
        We know covid was created in a lab thanks to Fauci and his penchant for gain of function research. But instead of focusing on who caused these deaths, we harass, abuse and vilify anyone pointing this out.
        
        But back to the blindingly obvious. Why is the MoH not acknowledging this alarming excess all cause mortality, let alone trying to find out what the causes are? Some MIGHT be from the man made covid. Many will be from other issues that arose due to us being locked up. But there is no doubt that the rise directly correlates with the beginning of the jabbing.
        
        Last time.
        
        Release ALL of the data and we’ll be able to prove very quickly what caused it.

        The modellers strike again.
        
        They used a model for influenza based on 7 year average … but excluded past epidemics, downgraded outliers and multiplied the upper predicted level by 1.64. Despite all this for all of Australia “sustained statistically significant excess mortality continued to be recorded in Australia in the first quarter of 2023.
        For all weeks in the first quarter of 2023 the number of deaths exceeded the upper limit of usual variation reaching statistical significance (1,180 deaths).
        While excess mortality for 2023 for Australia is at 9.1% above expected, this is lower than excess mortality for the first quarter in 2022 which was 16.6% above expected.
        They claim Covid was the “main contributor” to the numbers but don’t say what percentage. If only 51% it would still be the main contributor. It also ignores the pull forward effect of the “culling” of the elderly in the preceding years of the pandemic.
        
        It resembles “climate science” where adjustments are made so that the data can be made to fit the narrative.

    The NZ government holds the gold standard data: detailed **individual level** info on medical histories of millions of people who were vaccinated and a decent number who were not. Plus the chance to examine dose dependence in outcomes of 1, 2, 3, boosters etc.
    
    Steve Kirsch has made the key point. Why won’t you call for the government to conduct the detailed and definitive study to prove the safety of the vaccines?

    You are correct but the opposite also holds true.
    
    Covid deaths were treated exactly the same way you just suggested which as you suggested is ridiculous.
    
    They also deliberately played down any potential vaccine harm to the point that no verification was done (unless it was an immediate reaction) so they had plausible deniability. Your argument holds because of this choice. This is how fraud works, remove controls and your fraud can’t be proven.
    
    This also meant that high risk individuals were not given information about the risk the vaccine posed to them and risked harm because of this.

        @iamalwaysright. Obviously, you have no background in medicine. Autopsies involves the opening the heart, chest, brain etc. Biopsy is not what you do for viral infections.
        
        Imagine cutting up the bodies for thousands of people. They would be in storage for years. Pathologists only do a few at most per day.
        
        The reality is antivaxxers will never be satisfied. They will always have another reason… oh wait 20 years, it changed your DNA etc it will show up then. An absence of evidence means you HAVEN’T LOOKED to these folks.
        
        They seem to be impervious to data. I post so others less certain have available data they can look at those themselves. Data interpretation skills and critical reasoning is sufficient to draw conclusions for those without fixed beliefs.

        David – if one has a novel virus and are using new technology to prevent the spread and severity, which has been shown to do neither, responsible governments would be doing autopsies. Cutting open the chest, heart, and brain plus many more organs is precisely what one does. The organs get examined and tissue samples taken and appropriately stained. Failure to do this is medical negligence, but instead we have a guess as to the cause from their medical history. Clearly your understanding of the importance of autopsies to try and understand a disease and to investigate the cause of death and the advancement of the science from doing such investigations is limited.

    MCōs – I get your point. But apparently though incomplete, the NZ data is comprehensive, age, jab status, date of jab, number of jabs, other medical conditions etc.
    
    If we had the full data going back 2 years, actual data analysts can identify patterns. The most simplistic being if you had 2,000 people who died who fit the same data profile, and 1,400 of them who died were jabbed and 600 weren’t, that is a very big pointer that there is a problem with the jabs.
    
    The key thing here is, proper and thorough data analysis would end any speculation and we can move on.
    Instead, as we know, we’ve been lied to and gaslit constantly for almost 4 years. Something needs to be done to restore trust in our government and our health authorities.

      80-90% of the population was jabbed. What I see is people are comparing the absolute numbers of both groups and not the rate. It’s like saying Maori are less likely to be criminals because there are more Pakehas in prison. Totally discounting the disparity in populations where Pakeha outnumber Maori 4:1.

        1000 of each group. No jabs, 1 jab, 2 jabs, 3 jabs etc.
        Then look at the outcomes, factoring in age, health status etc.
        
        Don’t try and twist this around. I’m guessing you’re one of an army of trolls that will be employed attempting some damage control since the data dump.
        
        Real simple. Would you be comfortable with ALL of the data (that we now know exists) being released for independent analysis?
        
        Because that is all it will take to put this thing to bed, once and for all.

I’m starting to feel quite unwelcome in my own country. I voted for change and the hostility towards the new government, aided by a very impartial MSM is depressing and disrespectful to the large number of New Zealanders who wanted a change. If this is how the country will react in future to anything that isn’t what the hard left want, then I cannot see myself living here in the long term. Were is not for me having school age children who are settled, I would want out of this country. It’s not somewhere I want to be anymore, I’ve never felt that way until now. We are on a very slippery slope toward oblivion.

  But regarding advice from officials, let me share this story from my short political career.
  
  When Three Strikes was going through parliament, we asked Justice officials to give us reliable estimates of the impact of what was proposed on prisoner bed numbers. They came back with the frightening claim that 3S would increase bed numbers by 42% over five years. (Workman went one better, and said the prison population would triple over the same period)
  
  Rodney and I were thinking “how the hell do we sell this?” when Rodney became suspicious of the methodology behind the estimate. Unlike me, he and our Chief of Staff Peter Keenan are numbers guys – both have economics degrees.
  
  Cutting a long story short, when Judith Collins took over the Bill – after Power tried to blackmail Key after he had made an agreement with us, and then threw his toys out of the cot, saying he would have nothing further to do with it – Judith had her officials do some numbers based on strike offending over the past 30 years projected forward for 30 more years, but with 3S factored in.
  
  The results were dramatically different from the made up Justice Dept. stats, and have proved to be pretty well right. Three strikes increased prisoner bed numbers by about 400 over the ten years it was in force. In other words the increase caused by it was less than 1% of prison beds, not 40%.
  
  The moral of the story is that supposedly independent officials simply cannot be trusted – or at least many of them cannot be trusted – to give accurate advice to a centre right government. They are shills for the left.

  Now that I’ve a bit more time, I’ll make a few quick points:
  
  1. At no stage do the bearded buffoons allow for the possibility that the Unfair Pay Agreement cabinet paper was leaked by someone other than a National politician. Like a civil servant for example. They just automatically assume it was leaked by a Nat MP on the basis of no evidence whatsoever.
  
  2. Of course the Unfair Pay Agreements will deliver more cash to people who currently have jobs – but they make absolutely no mention of the impact on unemployment, job growth nor how pay rises will be funded. I contend that pay rises will be funded by increased prices paid by NZ families for goods and services thereby adding fuel to the cost of living fire and pushing NZ families back even further.
  
  3. Unfair Pay Agreements also help destroy competition between firms (particularly the ability to compete on price) and completely removes one of the best tools available to the young, unskilled or brown folk to get a start on the jobs ladder – to take a low wage initially before advancing up the pay scales as a result of developing better skills and behaviours.
  
  4. It totally plays into the hands of ‘big business’ at the expense of small business who are less likely to be able to afford significant wage increases without commensurate productivity increases.
  
  5. Of all the myriad ways people have, for Millenia, increased their wages over time this is easily the most damaging and counter-productive. It is easily one of the worst ideas ever to come out of the New Zealand Labour Party in the last generation.
  
  New Zealand families should be supremely grateful this never got off the ground.

    There are a ton of reasons in theory why unions may increase unemployment of low income workers, decrease productivity and increase the cost-of-living.

      Using the power of the state to coerce, to force against their will, one group to give another group, a group you favour, money and advantages – because you find it politically advantageous to do so.
      
      I argue it is a corrupt practice. Labour had just so completely run out of ideas to enable improvements in our economy that all they were left with was naked state force.
      
      Naked state force to advantage one favoured group over different, unfavoured, group and to give the illusion of progress, of achievement, while giving the finger to the absolute certain negative consequences on our families and wider society.

Yesterday I felt so ashamed of the actions of some of my fellow NZ’ers (or Aotearoans, if that’s your preference).

Whilst the right to peaceful protest is enshrined, I feel the Maori Party jumped the musket (ironically in more than one way).

Whilst their protest action was relatively well behaved the problem was their reasoning was at times inflammatory somewhat and misinformed.

Then we had the spectacle of former Maori Party official Ken Mair threatening to blockade Govt agencies in Wanganui on Dec 20 (I wonder if that includes the Police Station? That could be interesting for him). Suggest Ken Mair pulls his bloody head in and stop acting like a fool!

Now contrast all of this with today’s announcement that Kīngi Tūheitia is calling for a national hui (January 20) to discuss the coalition govt’s statements on the Treaty. Yes I know people here will deride this and that it will also be uncomfortable for the coalition govt but it is better to have dialogue to better understand the issues from both sides (especially if the Govt is invited to participate).

Perhaps this is something that the Maori Party could learn from? Dialogue first before nutting off?

After all they, of all Maori, are in a highly privileged position of being at the top table, that of Parliament. How about less theatrics and clown shows from the Maori Party, and actually engage with the democratic process that they are being generously paid by the taxpayer to participate in?

Perhaps the coalition govt could reach out for some dialogue too? And see whether the Maori Party are sincere (or just a bunch of unwilling radicals incapable of doing the best for everyone)?

    Don’t downtick this just because it’s mma saying it. It would be a great idea for Government ministers to publicly offer to attend and speak at the hui, as long as proceedings are recorded. Either TPM refuses, in which case they show themselves to be impervious to dialogue and unwilling to listen, or they accept, in which case they either make sure the Ministers are able to speak (in the way that TPM MPs are when they attend Parliament), or they show themselves to be unable to participate in proper grown-up conversation.

    The entire point of ACT’s policy is to have a grown up discussion about the principles of the Treaty.
    
    It’s also worth noting that almost everything being repealed was done WITHOUT any mandate over the last six years and is being repealed WITH a mandate. We should have been given the chance to discuss those policies when they were brought in (we were ignored) but now they expect us to have to get their permission to remove them?
    
    It is Labour, the Greens and TPM that are dangerously antidemocratic, NOT National, ACT and NZFirst (at the moment – NZFirst previously acted against their mandate but at the moment are following their promises).

  I was listening to a talk by some US politician several years back. He was explaining how entitlements can easily be given but cannot be taken away. He probably should have gone a bit further — once an entitlement is given then there is an expectation that it will be expanded over time.
  
  This is what is happening with Maori demands. National aren’t even backing off that much yet Maori are crying genocide, literally. It’s outrageous and we need to reset back to the original treaty of Waitangi. Not the re-imagined nonsense expansionary version.

Media does not disclose the individual names of the vandals. Media does not quote or give any report from police. It’s not known if police are investigating.

Joseph Fullerton is the spokesperson and the media rewards him with a full article for his political marxist eco talking points.

RPR is not a legal entity on the charities website.

RPR’s website says “We are proud to be part of the A22 network, a collection of campaigns around the world working for urgent govt action on climate change through bold disruption of business as usual.”

The A22 network says its primary funder is the Climate Emergency Fund! Should A22 be charged for the damage? Isn’t the Climate Emergency fund government money? Are governments funding these vandals?
Are the vandals/activists funded or paid.

Who is the spokesperson Joseph Fullerton? A google shows a linkedin page for Joseph Fullerton of canterbury uni with no further info. Or there is a Joseph Fullerton in California who is “Chair of the Climate Action and Sustainability Committee. California Community Colleges. Jan 2020 ; Citizen’s Advisory Committee Member. Peninsula Clean Energy.” This seems like our guy. Is Joseph Fullerton the media’s spokesperson for the vandalism live in California?

  You can’t really pledge allegiance to two different things because when they conflict, which takes precedence?
  
  The oath should be prescribed language. Deviate, and it doesn’t count.
  
  If those oaths aren’t rendered invalid, then when a conflict arises, there’ll be arguments about “but I swore an oath to the Treaty and this is what that means for me.

In October 2022, ACT announced the referendum would ask whether voters approved of the Treaty Principles Act becoming law. Its three suggested clauses would state:

1 The New Zealand Government has the right to govern New Zealand.

3 All New Zealanders are equal under the law, with the same rights and duties.

If the ACT position is as simple as this, can legislation be prepared so the Maori King’s hui has specific legislation or a specific Government statement to address.

Otherwise the ‘hui’ will be as helpful as the Ardern “conversation” on Capital Gains Tax where she failed to provide a Government position to be discussed, leaving a void for the media and multiple nutters for fill in for her

Give the Maori King something specific to address or it will likely all be a fucking waste of time

The latest figures being quoted on TV say that 16,000 have died in the Israel/Hamas (often misquoted as being Israel/Palestine) dispute.
Why do most sources suggest there are three groups involved in the fighting – Israeli, Hamas and Palestinian (all Gaza residents not clearly Hamas).
It is also suggested that 4,000 Hamas fighters are included in the death toll, one in four.
If these figures represent the true outcomes does it seem to confirm two likely facts.
Firstly, rather than Israeli attacks being indiscrimate are quite carefully selected.
Secondly, that the civilian deaths show a high correlation between positions of Hamas and the
Palestine population (hiding amongst).

Sounds like he may have referred to old-fat-fingers as …’King Rat’ 🙁

  My recollection is that Jones took his oath in Te Reo. What he said was “if it’s good enough for Winston and me to take the oath in accordance with the letter of the law…”
  That’s the main point. The law is prescriptive and everyone else avoided ad libbing. At least I never heard an English speaker refer to King Big Ears or King Tampon! It’s not the time and place for jokes and jokes.

      It is an official language its just not named as an official language in legislation – Maori and sign were official recognised to give them government backing.
      
      Why is an official language – because of customary usage as the language of all NZ for official business since 1840 as the language of the Crown, including the English version of the Treaty. See every Act of Parliament since it was established in NZ
      
      Should it be officially recognised in an Act of Parliament – I say yes because I am so tired of Maori is an official language and English isnt trope

New Zealanders, and especially Nat, ACT and NZF politicians, would be very foolish to ever get into conversations or debates over whether ‘X’ (groups or individuals) deserve ‘Y’ (almost always taxpayer money) because they will almost always lose. They will be doomed from the outset as the Left excel in guilt-tripping people into an enlargement of state favours and largess.

The question should always be:

1. What are the reasons you would seek to deprive New Zealand families the ability to feed their kids by taking this money from them in order to give it to ‘X’, or

2. If we give this taxpayer money to ‘X’ what is the opportunity cost we pay by not instead giving that money to A or B or C? With A, B and C being cancer drugs, heart surgeries, home wheelchair access for disabled kids etc.

Let’s hear what the Left have to say then.

I was reading the shocking report in stuff about falling school performance.

This links to a really spun article written in 2019 that really tries hard to make an abysmal performance sound good.

The large gender reading gap has narrowed. Narrowing gender gaps are good. Right?

Well it depends on how it has been achieved. Reading for both boys and girls is down. Girls read more than boys and their reading level has dropped much more. Therefore the gender gap has reduced.

But now National is responsible, so it is perfectly OK to report that NZ pupils have had their worst PISA results ever.

18% failed to even achieve the low benchmark (Australia only 10%) and 6% achieved the high benchmark (Singapore 51% achieved the high benchmark).

OK, I was good at maths (getting 96% would be a very bad day for me) but I also did a lot of coaching of kids who were sub-average. I am shocked that kids are not getting at least 70% for these pretty basic.

On Thursday, the lowest temperature in City X was 6 degrees C and the lowest temperature in City Y was -3 degrees C. What was the difference between the lowest temperatures in the cities?

Answer: 9 degrees C.

Only 69% of NZ kids got that right. Really?

By way of background/brief explanation why I feel somewhat qualified to make the following assertions:

Over a number of decades, my career has taken me to six continents. On four of those I have been sadly privileged to attend to people in the aftermath of man-made and natural disasters, including the absolute biggest ever – and please never again – the Christmas Day tsunami.

Sometimes there were only tens of casualties but they were horrific – usually bombs, also air crashes. Sometimes there were thousands of casualties, of which I only dealt with a fraction – usually volcanic eruptions, earthquakes etc.

I won’t speak about the millions affected by the tsunami, except that in the very very limited location where I was working, it is the only time I’ve seen in four decades, mass burials.

There is a point, and the point is – it is simply impossible to cremate/inter people in their thousands, or even hundreds, unseen.

It’s possible for an earthquake to bury people under the rubble, of course; but as you will have all seen on TV, everybody congregates to try and get them out to recover survivors and weep for and bury their dead.

So: Hamas is claiming 10-15,000 dead due to Israeli ground- and air-strikes. Where are the burials? Especially as their religion requires that Muslims are always buried, never cremated. It is a Koranic requirement that “the body be ritually washed and draped before burial, which should be as soon as possible after death”. and for example, in a structured and orderly place like Singapore, if a Muslim patient dies, but wishes to be buried back home in say Indonesia or Thailand, the authorities will expedite the whole medical, colonial and logistics post-mortem processes to enable it to happen by sundown of the day after death. Because that’s the religion’s demand.

I can’t see there can be any doubt that there have been civilians killed or severely injured who later died, as a result of military action taken by Israel against the butchers of 7 October.

And euphemistically-called “collateral damage” is inevitable when the terrorists don’t abide by the rules of war, and position themselves behind, underneath and next to human beings – men, women and children – who they hope will shield them from retribution. Indeed, I won’t repeat it here, but Hamas leaders have said those people are martyrs for the cause. Not exactly as if they got informed consent…

Israel is losing blood and money trying not to kill those shields. Yet here in New Zealand and other countries, many are blaming Israel for everything and (a) believing everything Hamas says while (b) ignoring the evidence of their own eyes.

Yet we must ask the question: where is the evidence of ~15,000 dead Muslims either buried, or left unburied, if Hamas’ claims are correct?

(As of 1 December, the Gaza Health Ministry ‘reported’ that at least 15,000 Palestinians (including 6,150 children) have been killed.)

I used to think we were heading for Weimar: Mk II on the basis of financial implosion. Now I think we are heading for Weimar: The Sequel with added Judenfrei emphasis.

We’re being lied to, of course.

    That is possible; ‘saff’-burials (interring multiple bodies of the Faithful, up to 10 at a time, in a common plot, and saying one prayer) has been used before, most recently in the UK due to Covid. But it is very rare. AFAIK.
    
    The logistics of retrieving, transporting and interring the remains of 15,000 people are very, very daunting indeed. I can say that doing mass. cas. RMRs ((re)moving mortal remains) has a serious logistics & personnel footprint that is no way invisible.
