This shows that there are a lot of different views on climate change. I am not an expert so I am not arguing Arthur Viterito is right. However, I find different views to alarmists interesting.

What’s Driving Climate?

In climate science, it is dogma that increasing atmospheric CO2—a “greenhouse gas”—is the principal driver of climate change. What follows is the politically convenient narrative that the “climate emergency” can only be solved by committing to drastic cuts in CO2 emissions. To do so requires that fossil fuels must be phased out of our energy economy. How scientifically sound is this narrative?

There are many drivers of climate, including long-scale and large-scale variations in solar activity, distribution of atmospheric water vapor, the coming and going of clouds, volcanic and tectonic activity, and ocean currents. How do these other factors compare to the effect of atmospheric CO2 on climate? How do they relate?

Join the National Association of Scholars on tomorrow, September 8, at 2 pm ET as we discuss the various other contributions to climate change.

This webinar will feature Arthur Viterito, a renowned climatologist and physical geographer, and a retired Professor of Geography from the College of Southern Maryland. He has recently published a provocative hypothesis that tectonic activity, and the attendant leakage of heat from the Earth’s core, is the principal driver of climate.

The discussion will be moderated by J. Scott Turner of the National Association of Scholars.

  An interesting side note to this talk shows that in the last 50 years there has been 0.2 degrees C increase in temperatures in the upper Northern hemisphere and 0.01 degrees C increase in the Antarctic region.
  
  Anyone claiming climate change is melting the Antarctic is talking through a “hole in their hat”.

    That is simply wrong. The Antarctic Peninsula has warmed by 3 degrees Celsius since 1950. This is one source but I could spend all day posting 200 sources saying the same thing.

      The University of Alabama data set is the most credible source of info on temperature change and they show virtually no change in temperature in the Antarctic region with most of the increases in the very north of the planet. See 16 mins into the video posted by Chuck Bird earlier for actual proof.
      
      There may be areas of Antarctic where temps are higher but they are confined to the western side of the continent and the peninsula near Chile. That is mostly volcanic activity not climate change.

        The University only collates the Data which is from the Satellite Network launched by Nasa and NOAA in Nov 1978
        They measure temp globally, especially in the Troposphere where apparently the ‘hot spots’ are supposed to be happening
        
        Btw Byrd Station in Antarctica had a record low this August of -45.54C
        BY is right in that it was warmer in 1983. Colder now- natural variation?
        August 1983: -42.5 C
        August 198:1 -43.0 C
        August 1978: -43.7 C
        September 1986: -44.7 C
        August 2023: -45.54 C
        I think the one at Concordia Research Station had a record low in June too (-83.2C).

        One could hardly say, that seeing those temperatures, that it was warmer – it was less cold – it is still bloody cold at – 42.5 C, and ice will remain ice – it won’t start melting.

        If you go here: https://climate4you.com/ they detail all the temperature series and their corrections. Strangely all the adjustments depress the past and make the warming appear greater. Why would that be. In theory, corrections should go both ways.

      It is then more likely to be a reduction in wind chill temperature.
      ie Less wind as the dry Polar Easterlies are reduced. ??
      
      Also keep in mind that there are very few weather stations and most have popped up over the last 10-20 years along with satelite data etc.
      
      As far as sea ice is concerned , 1976-2016 in Antarctica, Then watch this from Nasa / Sea and Ice centre.

        Some people imagine that freezing stops water loss or gain, but even air at -50°C holds some water, and it is relative humidity that counts. Ice will sublimate into water vapour if the air is below 100% humidity, and as air drops from the antarctic or greenland icesheets in the powerful catabatic flows that are so typical of those places it warms up (lapse rate) and becomes less humid, meaning it will slowly erode ice via sublimation.
        
        I’ve seen 200mm of snow in northern China disappear over 2 weeks at consistent -10 to -30°C temperatures as super dry air from Siberia blew in.

      A significant proportion of the Antarctic Peninsula that has shown elevated temperatures are actually north of the Antarctic Circle so technically outside the polar region.
      The body of the continent, as shown by the temperature recording of the bases which have been continuously occupied since about 1960 (Scott Amundsen, McMurdo, Casey, Davis) have not shown any rise.
      The peninsula is regarded as being in a different zone.

        Key word is Peninsular.
        Its where the Westerlies converge with Polar Easterlies.

        Nothing to do with the real topic of course but are there any ships, excluding those with nuclear power, still in operation that can really be described as “steaming”?

The point is that some people have had their immune system compromised and the most likely cause (Bradford-Hill criteria) is a novel untested vaccination that is neither safe or effective.

      Summer Arctic sea ice extent is shrinking by 12.2% per decade due to warmer temperatures.

I se that the name of New Zealand appears to have been dropped in almost every respect and replaced by a novelty word which is claimed by many to be created by Maori.
That the so called media lost the Election is no reason for this kind of behaviour.
I have written to the relative Minister (and acknowledged) and have sad that if required it could be New Zealand Aotearoa in that order.
I think that, despite some comments, we will see more everything Maori introduced into New Zealand Society this year, and continually in the future.
As I am in the very twilight of years, sadly, at least, I will not see this occur.

  Dr Brash is reporting an absolutely outrageous example where the Real Estate Authority is cancelling a long standing real estate agent’s licence because they asked for an exemption that was declined. No reason given. The exemption request related to a “1.5 hour programme … provided and the agents assessed by a politically-motivated Maori group from the Bay of Plenty area”.

    Dr Brash is wrong. There’s nothing “outrageous” about this requirement.
    Te Tiriti o Waitangi is quite specific about the requirements for licensing real estate agents. In the Article 5347 , Subparagraph 14562 (a), Rev 1928, Nga tikanga mo te raihana i nga kaihoko whare (Procedures for licensing real estate agents), it stipulates that “no nga kaihoko whare (real estate agent) shall be granted a licence, unless he/she/they prove(s) the knowledge of the Tikanga Maori to the satisfaction of an examiner(s) appointed by the local Iwi.”

    Well I never knew that the REA existed.
    Just another government body(is it a quango) which is a job for boys/girls. Probably meet once a month in Wellington to do the bidding of the government, all expenses paid…. where is the Minister of Regulation when needed.
    So to control the RE industry there is a 2 level bureaucracy.
    Imagine if David Seymour waved his big stick and the 1513 other little authorities were reduced, that would fix the swamp in Wellington a lot.

      REAA’s main job is to protect the public from unscrupulous real estate agents. It licences them, and adjudicates complaints. Its decisions are subject to judicial review.
      
      A court case objecting to REAA’s decision, i.e. questioning the relevance of Treaty training as a requirement to be certified as a fit & proper person for the purpose of selling houses, would be interesting.

        Mind you in 4 days time it will no longer be mandatory. Now I wonder how and why that change was made. The whole thing sounds very much like high farce, and high ridicule usually follows. Well guess what, REA.

  I too have noticed that Stuff in particular has been pushing the “Aotearoa” angle for some time and this morning was compelled to send the editor the following email:
  ” Why do you persist in calling our country “Aotearoa”?
  It is “New Zealand”.
  The rest of the world knows that, and that is what they use.
  There is no shame in using “New Zealand”, just as there is no shame in calling us “New Zealanders”, not “kiwis”.
  Why the denial ? Why the euphemisms ?
  You use “Australia” and “Australians”, so please give up this pandering to minorities and admit that we live in “New Zealand” and we are “New Zealanders”.

    Grey, you’ll freak then to know FIFA’s rankings list us to the world as Aotearoa New Zealand. Clearly they’ve done that at the best of New Zealand Football (note they’ve not changed their own name).
    It’s the insidious nature of it that annoys me rather than the country being mature enough to debate and decide these things. I don’t actually object to the word and if the country (everyone, not just Chloe’s comrades committee) voted to change, I’d be fairly relaxed. But don’t impose it and then shout racists when people query it.
    The creeping use of Aotearoa New Zealand actually harms their cause because it alienates moderate people and makes them fear it is the thin end of a wholesale takeover they will have no say in.
    And while I’m at it, why do they insist on saying the country’s name twice? The Germans don’t keep spouting Deutschland Germany, do they, you morons.

  Being the Treaty led person that I am, I feel we should use the name of the country in the te reo version i.e. Niu Tireni. This Aotearoa thing is the name of the north island only. If we all make an effort to likewise follow the words of te tiriti we should annoy sufficient activists to make things amusing.

The College of Southern Maryland is nowhere near a leading university. Not in the first rank, or the second rank, not even the third rank. Basically it is a mid level polytechnic/community college that prepares people to go to institutions with four degrees.
How likely is it that the Professor Viterito is world renowned in the field of climate science? I do note he is an advisor to Heartland Institute, which is well known for promoting the skeptic line on climate change..
In contrast Professor Renwick from Victoria University is actually world renowned in the climate science field.

Have you posted her response to you? Have you informed Professor Renwick that she is happy to debate him?
        
        If he says, “Okay, I’ll debate her”, will you arrange it, and pay for it? If not, who do you think might? Who would be the debate moderator, do you think?

        Here is Koonin; received his Bachelor of Science from the California Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the supervision of Arthur Kerman in the MIT Center for Theoretical Physics.[4][5][6] In 1975, Koonin joined the faculty of the California Institute of Technology as an assistant professor of theoretical physics becoming one of their youngest ever faculty.

        Hardly worthy of you. There are nutters on both sides of the climate divide, not that homeopathists are necessarily nutters, but climate science is a very new area and has attracted its fair share of second rate followers.
        
        My view is it is still very uncertain what is happening, we have limited data, particularly in the southern hemisphere (and even more so Antarctica), and simple explanations like anthropogenic GHGs won’t pass the test of time unscathed.
        
        But each to their own.

      In the case of any truth claim, I’d be prepared to accept good evidence for the the claim being made. That seems to me to be the sole criterion, not where someone works or where they went to school, which is interesting context but cannot determine the truth or falsity of a proposition.
      
      Saying “he’s/she’s/they’re wrong” without any further elaboration isn’t going to impress anyone.
      
      The point is that credentials (or lack of) are irrelevant if you are wrong (or right), as the case may be.

        As recently as 2020 he was sayin the ‘ecosystem will collapse in 40 years’.
        The IPCC in AR6 contradict his claims- like weather will get more extreme- amongst other things.

    His bias upfront and clear. He could have said 3 for the question, 3 against.

    manmade emissions CONTRIBUTE to climate change
    
    While some climate qualified scientists may NOT agree
    manmade emissions CAUSE climate change
    
    Sort of like taking a kid into a lolly shop and saying would you like a lolly. Predictable response.
    
    Now take same kid to front of lolly shop and ask kid would you like a lolly here or an icecream next door.
    
    The first will say ALL kids like lollies.
    The second wil not give that response as obviously some will prefer icecream.

  Skepticism is the hallmark of science, non-skeptics with their articles of faith are not scientists. It’s notable that most prominent skeptics in climate science are highly experienced greybeards with whole careers in science who no longer have to bend the knee to Millennialist dogma to make a living.
  
  Over the last generation all branches of academia outside of perhaps hard sciences (which climatology is not) have been corrupted by politically imposed requirement to follow misanthropic far-left ideology.
  
  Every scientist with a technical analysis bent who looks at the nuts and bolts of climatology will tell you it’s mostly junk. Climate models can’t and never will work – they are oversimplified and don’t model essential water cycle and localised convective physics.

I am reading an article from the Telegraph UK, giving the history of the UK’s financial demise under various Labour governments. Here is an excerpt.

The first two Labour governments failed because of inexperience, incompetence, some bad luck and an alarming inability to handle the realities the world threw at them during international turbulence. But the others had something else in common – a desire to aggrandise the state and to finance that by diverting, through taxation, resources from the productive sectors of the economy to the unproductive ones.

Expansion of the state meant putting armies of workers, mainly members of Labour’s client groups in the trades unions, on the public payroll in strictly-regulated and demarcated jobs. It began to appear that public services existed more for the benefit of those working in them than for the taxpayer who funded them.”

They reported that certain types of “sports” brand shops (Converse, Fila, etc etc) were heaving with people.
Yet the more conservative brands such as Rodd & Gunn and Barkers were completely empty of customers.
I’m sure some socio-economics expert would be able to read something into this… I have my own theory….

    For what it’s worth ST, my read on what Handyman was saying: Saw a headline about Ardern’s legacy. Didn’t read the article. I already know Ardern’s legacy is debt, death and division.
    
    Makes a bit more sense than inferring it was referring to the headline itself and not the article.

      Pineapple Lumps – you are correct.
      Everybody else – sorry for the lack of clarity.
      
      Also for clarity, the “deaths” are not those during the lockdown period but ongoing in the subsequent years due to various reasons eg lack of medical diagnosis and treatment. I was talking to an ICU specialist yesterday. He said for some conditions, elective surgery is an illusion; you will either have to have an emergency operation or you will die before getting to the end of the waiting period — and there are barely enough staff for emergency operations.
      
      Other folks will have their own list of Ardern legacy words. These are just mine.
      For young people who missed career and education opportunities maybe despondency is a better word.

    I live in that street and we don’t usually have any issues. I did hear the helicopters for about 1/2 hour and thought ‘annoying’. My son and his wife passed by on their way home and saw the man being escorted out of his home. Glad we have two big hungry dogs! (noisy anyway). I think they’re out testing Mark Mitchell.

  It’s a tactic, that being that you accuse your accusers of that which you are practising.
  
  It speaks of “mob censorship” but where were the howls of concern when Posie Parker and her small group of female supporters were silenced by a couple of thousand violent trans-activists? And where were the calls for action when at countless venues across the country Julian Batchelor’s Stop Co-Governance meetings were surrounded by mobs, guests having to run the gauntlet of abuse both verbal and physical?
