Happy new year, all. I hope 2024 is filled with vitality, agency and the warmth of great relationships. Mrs kk and I are looking forward to a fourth grandchild and have already booked travel to the UK in June to meet her. Lots of other family and friend events planned, too.

Might need to allocate some time to income generation, KB commentary, and fine single malt.

Some global issues I’ll be watching:

— The WHO’s attempted annexation of our sovereignty.

— Big pharma’s continued crimes against humanity under the protection of CDC, NIH et al.

— The same people who are working to crash the global economy attempting to install CBDC’s to ‘fix’ things.

Oh, and I plan to openly mock the woke’s continued march towards their own hilarious, reality bereft oblivion.

Watching Luxon grapple with NZ Inc will also be interesting. His success or otherwise will be fed into our ‘where should we retire’ model.

It’s going to be quite a year. Buckle up.

    Never forget, not once during the early days of the ‘deadly pandemic’ did ANYONE in government or any of the ‘experts’ ever once tell people to improve their personal health as a means to fight disease.
    No advice re diet, exercise, vitamin D via sunshine, vitamin C as a supplement, zinc etc etc.
    
    The whole messaging was centered on locking down, masking and taking part in a medical experiment using mRNA technology which had never managed to get approval to market in 20 years of trying.
    Everything people were told to do did more harm than good.
    Face it, the pharmaceutical industrial complex can’t make money from healthy people. They much prefer us dependent on their products.

      They never gave public health advice because the 2 or 3 years of Covid was never about public health.
      
      As you point out, dissemination of sensible and practical advice that would have greatly assisted was an obvious omission, and we can infer a great deal indeed from the omission.
      
      It’s simple observable aspects like this, that make no sense if the narrative was truthful and sincere, that tell us that we were being deceived, aside from all the more technical arguments that can bog us down and make us miss the obvious.

  While I share your concern about Big Pharma, who (an unintended pun) have had the WHO in their pockets for a very long time now. To feed your cynicism, I recommend John Le Carrie’s “The Constant Gardner”. But I agree, the world of medicine and pharmaceuticals is indeed very unhealthy (pun intended).
  
  Finally, you may be surprised how different National may be this time round to the past.
  
  Like you, we have a trip to UK/Europe planned for May. Relatives & friends etc.

Treaty

Seymour’s pitch is simple yet powerful: New Zealand needs a discussion about Treaty principles and people should have a say on them alongside the courts, the Waitangi Tribunal and public servants. And rather than a “partnership between races”, his principles aim to give all people “equal rights and duties”.

As he told RNZ, Act thinks the principles “should be codified in legislation and New Zealanders should be allowed to vote on them, rather than allowing the courts to surreptitiously change our constitution… Act would promote the Treaty as it was actually signed, not the divisive version invented by judges and academics.”

Perhaps Seymour just needs to clearly show the Treaty as it was actually signed, and juxtapose it with what it has become, as it is now redefined –

Māori own the water because this country was settled by consent, not conquest, under the Treaty of Waitangi.
Article 1 gave the Crown custodianship, not ownership.
Article 2, for the avoidance of all doubt, retained, for Māori, absolute control of our waters, our land, and all domains.
Article 3 asserted the right that we would have equality of opportunity with white New Zealanders.
Those three undertakings by all New Zealand governments have been constantly breached.

  Maori ownership of water was always restricted to use, travel and fisheries.
  They didn’t have ownership of, they had tribal control of.
  The weather was the source of replenishment and they understood that today’s water would not be there tomorrow.

  Yvette, until the downright lies, disinformation, misinformation and concentrated BS is countered by sense, this programme, started and backed by racist political parties, tended by woke Universities and the entire education system and absorbed by a pile of largely national and local Govt employees will take hold.
  
  We now have at least a couple of political leaders in Govt that want to push back on this divisive crap and we ALL need to give them support to make sure it happens.
  
  It ain’t going to be easy, but it can and will happen if we want it to. So what we ALL need to do in 2024 is act and not simply fire off hopes to similar people. Show direct support to our new Government, take on education BS at every level when we come across it, refuse to accept woke policies from local Govt, refuse to accept letters from entities that push down Manglish down our throats, question anything that looks like it is maorification.     Who defines the term principle ?
    How many are there, if any?
    Do we vote for all, some, or none of them?
    
    This is a pointless exercise, a half hearted attempt at a constitution to be built on the foundation of a document that served its only purpose on the day it was signed.

      Defining and enshrining the ToW’s principles only validates the thing. A politician with real courage would make the case for why it is an anachronism that no longer serves any purpose and that we should get rid of it and consign it to a museum. This would be very popular, but it is more important to most of these idiots to not get disinvited to drinks and nibbles than to do anything bold and popular.
      
      What we need to see is some sharp disagreement on the fundamentals that have become seen as self-evident, not a continual acceptance of the same with modifications around the edges.
      
      To use a metaphor, like a goldfish in a bowl, we seem unaware of the possibility of anything other than subsisting in a bowl of liberal liquid, constantly swimming around in increasing amounts of our own shit.

      I’malways: You do not understand what Seymour is proposing.
      
      As with the assisting dying legislation, he proposes passing a very short and simple Bill through parliament which specifies exactly what the “principles” are – I believe there are only three clauses, just as there are only three articles in the “treaty” (it is and never was an actual treaty, but that’s a different argument)
      
      The Act so passed can only come into effect if a majority vote for it to come into force in a referendum. It’s actually a brilliantly simple strategy. And of course any such referendum which effectively defines the treaty principles and prevents new ones being added will receive huge support – 70% plus in my view.

        Always: I don’t see any “circular argument”. The crucial question is whether the Nats will support and pass the Bill that Seymour is proposing…sadly I rather doubt they will; even Key probably wouldn’t have, and his balls are twice as big as Luxon’s.
        
        If the Bill is passed into law – dependent on the result of a referendum – the rest is pretty much routine…of course the usual suspects – two of whom I have named above – will make a huge noise about it, but they won’t stop the necessary referendum…in fact the more than squeal and moan, the more likely the thing is to pass.

Crikey, what is he smoking? What does an “ill economy” look like to Vernon? Getting paid to make Labour look as smart as possible???   I’m tossing up as to whether Small is trying to polish Labour’s turd or is just displaying his low standards and economic complacency.
  
  On our current trajectory, over the next generation we will find it increasingly tough to pay our way in the world – and while we watch similar economies streak further away from us.
  
  I shudder to think about the wealth and income gaps between us and Aussie in the next 20-40+ years the way we’re going.
  
  Labour can’t and won’t do anything about it, their ideology prevents them making the necessary tough calls.

  Yes, on the surface, the economy doesn’t look too awful yet because we’re still living on the coat tails of spending it up on the grand children’s future tax payments.
  
  When the credit card statement comes then that sniffle is going to change into pneumonia.
  
  But the impact is kicking in. NZ had a decrease in Boxing day spending while Australia had an increase. Clearly the writing is on the wall.

        DQ – and yet NIWA persist with predicting what is in store for us over summer. Last year and this year it was predicted to be below average precipitation and warmer than normal. An obvious a failure!
        
        Do they audit their reports – especially the wildly inaccurate climate models? Perhaps they should and apologise to us for their failure to be even occasionally correct.

        First, just technical point. NIWA doesn’t do weather forecasting, that’s Metservice, and NIWA doesn’t extrapolate long-term global climate trends, it relies on international modelling for this but down scales to the NZ situation.
        
        As to the relationship between a single observation and a long-term trend, the former is always more reliable than the latter because it is an observation rather than a prediction.
        
        Over time if the observations are inconsistent with an assumed long-term trend then we start to doubt the assumed trend, and think again. It’s what science is all about.

    The MetService forecasts are quite accurate. It is the weather itself that is the shocker. Mind you, that is often the norm for December. Typically we have to wait till late Jan and February to get settled weather. However, not so for the 2022/2023 summer.

  Don’t talk crap, said my wife, let’s get out of here.
  So we moved to Auckland which is a lot warmer, a lot less windy and maybe a bit wetter.
  We could have gone to Napier, for example, which has better weather or Blenheim, where the sun always shines, but who wants to live in a cemetery?

      What on earth do you mean? Napier hardly ever gets to more than 35 C which is only pleasantly warm.

    I’ve heard Invercargill takes the cake for crappy weather in NZ. Nelson seems pretty nice. I enjoyed the Auckland climate generally. Melbourne weather is typically chaotic and often extreme outside of winter (I’ve experienced 46C here and the place has gone from withering 40C+ to 15C and pissing down within 30 mins in summer while I’ve been here). This year so far spring and summer have been pretty mild.

  Thank you for your wishes about the weather. Your ability to read a weather map and your perception are clearly better than Brandalino and his foreign forecaster friends at NIWA, because they are persistently wrong about the weather up here.
  
  Just to prove a point, one of the locals in Puhoi who keeps meticulous weather records with his weather station has just published stats for 2023 v 2022. In 2023, Puhoi had 2,414mm of rain, and December had 175mm of rain, with 107mm failing in the last week of the month. December 2023 was wetter than December 2022.
  
  My prediction for the weather, I’ve seen the current weather pattern before – in 1979/1980 (I checked my recollection yesterday). So, sorry to put a further dampener on matters, expect January to be wet. In 1980, with this same weather pattern Christchurch had the wettest January for 43 years. The pattern is based on ElNino warming the Tasman, with storms coming from the Torres Strait and heading south off the Queensland Coast.

  I live in Christchurch. Weather here is mostly good. The most annoying weather is the easterly (due to being near the sea) which is quite cold.
  
  We have hot days during summer but a lot colder during winter, but not intolerable. But much lower humidity than up north. My brother just shifted down from near Rotorua. The rainfall at his previous home was about 3x what we get here.

As a bonus, the US is on a growth trajectory that could see it become the world’s top LNG exporter in 2024.

Hence the limited effect of the Ukraine war on the price you pay at the pump; ditto the idleness of Saudi threats, the technological backwardness of Iraq’s extraction industry & the bar on Iranian oil exports.

Happy New Year to all. There’ll be no resolutions for me, just a determination to give my best all the time. All going well I will have a new contract at work early in January which, although exciting in itself will limit my ability to comment here, but such is life!

Becoming a grandfather in 2023 has made a tangible difference to my outlook on life. My time on the planet is limited, but for my granddaughter, not yet one year old, the world is her oyster.

    Hi pdm – no, I pretty much stopped working for our family business when I had a breakdown six years ago. Since then I’ve done bits and pieces here and there, and I’m now a grateful superannuitant.
    
    I got an opportunity to take on a part-time role a couple of months ago, moving into a completely different work area. It wasn’t something I expected at 68 years old, but it’s something I’m really enjoying. Unfortunately, the nature of the job requires me to be judicious about what I say in the public domain, so I’m on something of a self-imposed blog exile!

  What is hypocritical in selling some shares at a profit if you think that they have got too expensive? It is precisely what you should do.
  In October 2020 I sold all our FPH shares. They had got to a ridiculous price of over $35 and had then stalled. I bought them all back in 2022 when they had dropped to about $21 which I thought was about their fair value. There was nothing hypocritical about it. I still thought it was a good company.

  Personally, I cannot understand why the NZD is so high. We’ve had a booming economy in the last six years, in the same way that maxxing the credit card produces good times. Now that we have a mega mountain of debt, not to mention an incoming tsunami of carbon credit liabilities just over the horizon, we’re well on our way to penury.
  
  If it were me, Steve, & if you can afford it, I’d take the trip. As a friend of mine says, it’s always later than you think.

    Alaska. Use the train, it is a real train. The tourist train runs daily from May to Sept.
    In the winter it runs up to Fairbanks weekly. It is a flagstop train meaning it can pick up or drop people anywhere.
    If driving the driver misses a lot of sights, and they drive on the other side of the road. Most is OK but going anti-clockwise around a roundabout is just so wrong!

That same day and for the next 48-72 hours I got slammed with Kings ads.

    You are onto it on this subject. If you are hiding from govt agencies, and they are chasing you, good luck. Best to go stone age comms (no devices, whispering in the park etc etc). If you want to hide from big tech and advertising based tracking it appears that is largely possible. You will have to get yourself off the big tech platforms though (for starters). GrapheneOS appears to be quite good for mobile phones in terms of a private OS (works on late model Pixels). You can get a new Google Pixel 6a for about $400 on special. There are a few little quirks with the OS but largely it works very well and the privacy makes the small quirks easily worth tolerating. There are many articles available on how to “go dark” on the internet.

  It is not only google search and location options you have to be careful with. On tablets you also have to be careful of the microphone. My wife had it this morning on her tablet. Within 10 minutes of discussing something with me, she had ads for the products appearing.

    Doesn’t really have anything to do with it. The tracking is at a phone level and it doesn’t matter what phone you use, apart from a degoogled phone. If you are using a smart phone, a smart tv, a tablet, etc then you are being tracked. Using ad blockers etc just stop the ads, not the tracking.

Browser/device fingerprinting, AI powered observations (including typing idiosyncrasies). Many of these big tech orgs are woke infected and work hand in hand with woke govt agencies. So they are profiling you for your political views. Keep that in mind next time there is a woke/lunatic govt that has a “disinformation project” or the like working with govt, police and security agencies.

        My understanding is that it comes down to the weight of the tow vehicle.
        
        You can’t tow a 3000kg boat ensemble with a 1500kg station wagon because the weight of the load overpowers the weight of the wagon. The engine being able to pull the load is only one part of it.

      Our 5.3Kw roof mounted solar array and inverter, including installation, cost NZ$13,500 a little more than five years ago. No batteries. We are heavy users of electricity. So far it has saved us $12,600 off our electric bill.
      
      36.07 MwHr created, average of 19.75 KwHr per day.
      
      Looking forward to the next 15 to 25 years.

        I’m guessing they all require machinery components that are not manufactured domestically
        Nuclear power also generates nasty waste that needs to be disposed
        I’d be interested to know how much a meaningful nuclear power plant would cost and in whose backyard it would be located. It certainly won’t be anywhere near someone with the money/clout to employ the appropriate legal firepower

        I contacted Northpower to volunteer to be the first person in Whangarei to use their upcoming VTG/VTH capability (Vehicle to Grid/Vehicle to Home).
        
        As the number of electric vehicles in New Zealand increase it makes sense for power companies to consider using those EV batteries to smooth out New Zealand’s peak load requirements.

    Solar power is useless for reducing power bills in NZ – it’s very good at producing power when you don’t need it. Useless for those peaks in July when you need the grid. And peak loading prices are what set a lot of the prices.
    In Oz with all its solar, spot prices irregularly hit market max $15 a unit (yes the numbers are correct). On the 30th, QLD hit the max price six times for their 5 minute intervals.
    The reckoning is that about 20% of the annual power price now goes to paying for the dozen or so peaks a year. SA with all it solar is most expensive State.
    So for such cheap power, it sure seems really expensive.

      The generation industry has been pointing out the cliff edge for a number of years but the last Energy Minister gave a very good impression of being a lump of 4 by 2. Because of our hydro and thermal plant, we are further back from the cliff edge than most other countries in the West. They are now having serious problems – demand response is a euphemism for power cuts. And legislation doesn’t overrule the laws of physics, no matter what they think.
      Fortunately, they are getting by because of the reserves, but they are being depleted. Australia has had several LOR2s but they haven’t had to cut yet. Sooner or later, the luck runs out. Expect to see severe shortages in Europe, UK and US this winter.

  It’s simple, electricity consumers that don’t have solar or alternate sources get an increased daily charge. The increases allowed by legislation introduced by Labour. Mine have gone from 0.33c/day to 0.66, and last month to 0.90. So each month, before I even start plugging in, $27.00 of my power bill is taken by daily charges. I believe the legislation allows the charge to go over $2.00/day by next year.

The former seemed wrong in context and my experience showed that “et al” applied to people specifically, rather than to lists in general. Road safety campaigner calls for new strategy.
Somehow it’s the Govts fault. Well the lower speed restrictions have clearly not worker, just made drivers impatient.
The roads can be made safer by repairing them properly, and that includes pot holes – not road cones.
Eg the road from Albany to Dairy Flat is a shocker. Bandaid repair patches all over the place and 80K restrictions. It’s a mess.

    It is not just one thing. The roads are a problem but New Zealand will never have roads of Australian standard unless we have Australian level GDP per capita.
    
    Australian road and injury deaths are lower than New Zealand. Why?

    Much more stringent licencing. It takes five years to obtain a full driver’s licence in Victoria. You need a documented 12 months of training on a learners permit followed by two graduated periods of provisional licences over a period of four years.

      NZ is small with low traffic densities. You can somewhat get away with poor driving skills. In bigger cities with higher traffic densities you just can’t get away with crappy driving.
      
      I disagree that worse roads directly lead to worse outcomes. The real problem is not driving to conditions. Worse roads exacerbate the problems when people drive poorly.

    Maybe start by catching them.
    Here in Chch the driving is getting worse and worse. People take the traffic lights as suggestions. Cellphone usage is rife. Lots of aggressive driving, dangerous lane changing, etc etc.
    
    I doubt I see one person pulled over per week.

      I agree but they also need tougher punishments, they slap the drunk drivers with a wet ticket, and then catch then catch them again. Or we have the guy that got community detention for destroying an elderly couples life.
      
      Here’s a recent case. He will get home detention. His car should be taken off him, sold or destroyed. License revoked and made to start from learners license when he is allowed to drive again. We don’t take traffic crimes serious in NZ

        If you are disqualified for more than one year you have to re-do your theory and practical tests, but it does seem you get your full licence back without having to go via learners etc. Judges frequently disqualify for a year and a day so the offender has to do the re-sits which is arguably judicial activism.

      A timely comment. Yesterday in Christchurch I had a guy go through a stop sign. In New Brighton. I managed to avoid him, barely. He apologised. “I didn’t see you”. Which means he is on drugs or he is distracted. Only a matter of time before he crashes.

        He was jailed for 12mths

      There have been so many variables changing that it would be foolish to try to attribute it to any one cause, especially government action.
      
      There have been massive changes in motor vehicle designs (crumple zones protecting passengers and pedestrians). Then of course air bags. These have lead to improvements in crash survival.
      
      Traction and braking control have reduced the occurrence of loss of control incidents.
      
      Percentage is not a useful was to track variable numbers like road deaths. A far better way is to look at statistical significance. The quick rule of thumb method is to take the square root.
      We had 340 deaths in 2023 and 374 in 2022. The difference is 34. The square root of 374 is 19, so 34 is a significant decrease.

Would be great to know who was the mad dog clown in Tawa /Wellington area letting off massive firework explosions at 3.45 AM on New Years Morning .01 01 2024 .
Seems the noise and explosions woke up a lot of wee babies, cats, dogs and Humans as well .
Who or what type of Authority refuses to ban fireworks for Private Domestic use .
Wonder will or could the new recently elected Coalition solve a long suffering problem against animals and humans which seems to be getting worse rather that diminishing .
Its called Discriminate use of Fireworks used to Terrorise NZs for the sicko type of so called loosely controlled fun .

Have to say after being let down by Kiwibank we moved money to Heartland and left the bill paying stuff with Kiwi. Heartland have been amazing. Old fashioned service. Talking to a human. Kiwi had to wait 5 – 7 days for a reply to email and days for a phone call to an adult.

  I must say I’ve generally had really good service from Kiwi Bank. I moved there from ASB (for whom I used to work). When I was first applying for a mortgage Kiwi Bank were rally bad, I’m still waiting for a response, but when I left ASB I was very happy with Kiwi Bank. Their service does seem to have dropped off a bit however. My new debit card was sent by snail male and didn’t arrive. I arranged another one which was to be couriered because my current one was expiring, and now has expired, but the new one still isn’t here. So I don’t have a Kiwi Bank card to transact! BUT, after arranging the replacement card, I arranged a WISE (Visa Debit) Card for a trip I’m doing to South Africa, and it arrived in 3 days. Amazing since I sat on Christmas Day (25th) and arranged the card and it was delivered on the 28th. The Kiwi Bank equivalent was arranged on the 23rd and I’m still waiting.

  For supposedly intelligent people, clowns like DeGrasse Tyson, Dawkins and Hitchens and all the other militant materialists are/were incredibly stupid.
  
  What’s their basic argument? That all there is is matter in motion, therefore the objects of science are all there is to know, therefore the scientific method can in principle tell us everything about reality.
  
  But there’s a huge problem with the argument. I’d like to ask them how, using the methods of science, can they show that there is no aspect of total reality that transcends scientific investigation, thereby proving their materialism?
  
  They can’t show that, because to do so, they would have to make that judgment from somewhere outside the spatio-temporal realm, which they can’t do because they deny the existence of anything outside of time and space.
  
  So their core proposition is unprovable by science, and, by their own empirical standard, they have no right to believe the truth of their core proposition, because it is unfalsifiable. They are presupposing the truth of a claim they cannot prove on their own terms. Materialism and “scientism” is as much a matter of faith as any religious claim.
  
  On the other hand, a immaterialist (i.e. someone who believes that space, time and matter are only one aspect of the totality, and that aspects of it transcend sensory experience) doesn’t have to prove his proposition through the empiricism and the scientific method of his materialist opponent, because his assertion is that science, while obviously very useful, cannot tell us anything at all about ultimate reality and its purview doesn’t, and cannot, extend beyond causal relations between energy/matter.
  
  By definition, for the reasons I have given, immaterialism is also an unscientific claim, but that is not an issue at all when you hold that science itself, inherently, isn’t up to the task of proving claims of immaterialism and/or the transcendent anyway.
  
  One of the consequences of the cancerous nihilism that has become so prevalent since the 19th century is that it values nothing at all beyond material objects as measurable quantities, while downgrading, denying or rejecting the qualifiable aspects of reality that are not the purview of empirical science but that anyone who has experience as a human being, who isn’t deceived or self-deceiving, recognises are just as real as any magnitude they can measure, perhaps more so.

    Their latest products seem to be the most powerful, and also the most intrinsically detrimental , The Truth and The Science.
    There is the possibility that there is knowledge of the immaterial that would get us out of our rapid decent to self annihilation, but it just isn’t profitable for us to be made aware of it.

1. An opposition leader will resign. As the new order settles in, someone – be that Chris Hipkins, Marama Davidson or James Shaw – will resign.
9. When the Green Party holds its AGM and the co-leadership positions fall vacant, there will be a serious challenge or call from members for a new co-leader to take the (shared) reins.

The general feeling is that Shaw will be rolled, but I don’t see him resigning. Marama will never resign. Hipkins might.

2. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will hit the sky, leading diplomatic and trade delegations to India, the US, and Pacific islands.

That’s not a prediction, that’s his job.

4. Leaning into life on the Opposition benches, Green MP Chlöe Swarbrick will become increasingly outspoken in the House. The Speaker will kick out Auckland Central’s MP at least once in 2024.

Outspoken? Or strident and shrill, as she realises just how inconsequential she now is.

6. Following the January 20 hui with the Kīngitanga, sizeable protests will arrive at Parliament and at Waitangi as Parliament resumes and as Christopher Luxon heads north for his first Waitangi Day as prime minister.

Which hopefully will fuel David Seymour’s bill.

7. The Government will deliver tax cuts in July, but the scale of those cuts will not be as large as was promised at the election. National will point to its coalition deal with NZ First, kyboshing the foreign buyers’ tax, and Labour’s so-called “fiscal cliffs” for the more modest tax relief.

Yeah, so? Hardly a prediction unless you expect them to borrow billions like labour do.
