  My wife’s friend is in turmoil at the moment. A teenage Maori boy (judging by his surname) is trying to join a gang (his dad’s in the Mob) and has to smash someone up as part of his initiation: for some unknown reason he’s selected this friend’s son.
  When all the wealthy Maori tribes, elites, academics and hangers-on deal with this shit/real issues (and don’t blame colonization), then I’d be happy to listen to their grievances. Sort your own house out first.

    Good point. I’m not in favour of more fees and taxes but if cyclists keep demanding cycleways and special lanes on roads (which often worsen traffic flow) they will eventually be asked to contribute directly through a registration fee on their bike/scooter/insert-annoying-conveyance.

  This is a definite thing with car makers recently. There is a subtle shift from a capex based model to an opex based model. “Sir wants heated seats with his car?” “Of course, sign up for this subscription to that service” – BMW.
  In a moment of madness I bought a new BMW I4. Dealer rep told me that in the US now, due to the prevalence of vendor finance, the new BMWs are all constantly connected to BMW. Miss a couple of payments and they know exactly where the car is and they remotely disable it, and there is nothing you can do to over ride the software.
  This car is basically an app with wheels. Like Teslas, there Are hardly any actual buttons or switches left, its all “in the app”.
  Whiches great till BMW stop supporting the version Ive got. Hmmmmm

    The 2013 Nissan LEAF that we bought nine years ago is still using two of the iriginal tires. The polution caused by the small amount of rubber that came off the tires in their eleven years of life has to be a lot less than the pollution coming out of the tailpipe of an ICE car driven for eleven years.

        Maybe it sits in the garage & doesn’t go very far, very often.
        
        What I would say to Info is that you should change or at least check those tyres. Tyre life is not just a function of usage. Rubber ages, cracks can appear – especially with the weight of an e-car. Seriously, get down to Beaurepairs or whoever & get them checked out.

        Only has a 24 kw battery and is down to about 120km range now. Son uses it to drive to work every day and saves on petrol.
        
        The wife and I bought a 2019 Nissan LEAF two years ago that has a larger 40 kw battery and can go about 235 km on a full charge.
        
        Btw both cars get a WOF check every year and the tires are checked.

      Tyres deteriorate from day one of manufacture.
      
      11 year old tyres are waaaaay past their safe use by date. You shouldn’t have got a WOF, and certainly don’t let your family in that deathtrap.

      An 11 year old car on 11 year old tyres (not tires) clearly isn’t getting used much. That would be very atypical usage in NZ.
      
      I doubt a set of tyres will last you much more than 80,000 with good rotation. The fact that two wore out and two are still going suggests poor rotation.
      
      80,000km in 11 years is an average of 7500 km a year or about 20km a day. Sure, that’s probably fine for a second or third run about, but not at all what most NZers will experience. Average car usage in NZ is about twice that.

        We live in Whangarei and the distance to the CBD and shops/grocery stores is about 5 minutes. Yes, we do not have to drive very far every day. Makes the EV the best option.
        
        Other than WOF and REGO costs we drive almost for free. Our power provider is Electric Kiwi who gives us one hour of free power every day.
        
        That one hour of free power provides more juice than we need for our daily driving.
        
        Some of us EV owners are actually happy with our decision to own one.
        
        If you don’t actually own an EV then it is very difficult for you to voice an educated opinion because you have no experience to base your opinion on.

        I have a smile when I read all about the EVs and the trials and tribulations they seem to have. My question is do the drivers enjoy driving them or even fall in love with them ?
        My happiness is sitting in the garage with I suspect a smug smile as just past its wof again.
        Yes its my second (ASX outside) Happiness is a 1962 Morris Mini Cooper. Yes 62 years old not quite as old as the driver.What more can you ask for. We live on a dirt track with potholes which test driver and car. Who cares its fun with a smile.

Some charge Israel with committing genocide against the people of Gaza. I believe it is reasonable to conclude that Israel is not engaging in genocide or anything like it. However some commentators may have not reached their position through reason.

The key fact that reasonable people should note is that Israel has the military capability to flatten all of Gaza. They could use their bombs and rockets to turn Gaza into glass. They could stand off and do this with no risk to their armed forces. If they did, the charge of genocide might have some merit?

However what is the IDF actually doing? They are involved in urban house to house street fighting against Hamas combatants. This is a very risky, costly type of warfare. They do this so they can target enemy combatants, not civilians.

This is even more difficult because Hamas purposely embed themselves within the local population. They store weapons in children’s bedrooms and build their bases directly under hospitals. That’s why the civilian casualties are so high. Hamas are using the local population as human shields.

Israel could completely flatten Gaza but they do not. Instead they have lost over 220 soldiers in ambushes and street fighting with Hamas. They are trying to win the war and defeat Hamas, not destroy the civilian population.

  If Israel was set on killing Gazans then it would be really easy to bomb or shell high population areas with anti-personnel bombs and howitzer fire.
  
  One AP howitzer shell can pretty much kill every living thing exposed within about 70 metres. A salvo of those could kill many thousand.
  
  Clearly Israel is not doing this. They are doing pamphlet drops and warnings to deliberately get civilians away from targets. They are doing this even though it sometimes even gives the legitimate targets, Hamas, opportunity to escape.

Well things are coming to a head in the Ukraine.
The Ukraine acknowledges that they have lost 31 or 51,000 troops dead (number depends on who you read) and that they are having trouble finding people to take their place – no surprise in that.
Then the Germans and the French are at odds about sending their own troops to help . How bloody stupid is the French president.
Then the Russians tell us that the Germans are wondering if they should send cruise missiles. Its a bit surprising that the Germans think they would need around 15 of them to hit the bridge. I would think that these things are a bit useless if they need that many to hit the bridge. Also the German President – or whatever they call him – implied that UK troops are already on the ground in the Ukraine- apparently they organised the attack on Russian ships in the black sea. I expect the Russians wont be forgetting this in a hurry.

It seems pretty obvious that things are coming to a head – either talks will begin soon to stop the stupidity or things will escalate very quickly and the whole shambles will get out of control. Zelenskyy is an idiot and he will almost certainly do something to provoke the situation in an effort to make sure other European troops get involved in the belief that such action will help him. I feel sorry for the people of Ukraine because they are the big losers.

      Even the most casual of analysis would show up the absurdity of asserting 1.5 million or more Ukrainian soldiers seriously wounded.
      
      The usually accepted ratio of seriously wounded to killed is around 3 to 1. So 1.5 million seriously wounded would mean about 400,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed. Nearly 2 million in total.
      
      No-one has suggested anything like that.
      
      It would be almost all of the military age Ukrainian soldiers (male only). Not just those in the actual combat zone (which might be as high as one third of the Ukrainian Army) but all of the logistic and support forces.
      
      I reckon General Milley’s estimates are far more sensible, and will be based on actual knowledge.

        Even the EU President, Von der Leyen, let it slip that 120,000 Ukrainians had been killed. And that was way back in Nov 2022. General Milley in Jan 2023 estimated 100,000 to 120,000 Ukrainians dead.
        
        Since then we’ve seen the failed Ukrainian offensive and now Russian forces blowing through the front line. Many, many more Ukrainians have been killed. So 400,000 has a high probability, and there are many saying it is now in excess of 500,000.
        
        I’m no Putin fanboy either – all along I’ve simply stated what I consider is a realistic view of the situation. Russia with its superior manpower, airpower, and now artillery power was always going to grind out a victory over the smaller Ukrainian forces.
        
        Zelensky had a peace deal in April 2022, ripped it up and chose carnage and destruction of his country instead. He was in a no win situation, took the advice of the clown Boris Johnson, and turned it into armageddon for his country. They are both evil IMO.

I’m not going to comment on the specific issue at Auckland Grammar, but what the article does highlight is what I’ve been concerned about for a while

The two sons live with their grandfather in zone while the mother (has citizenship in NZ) lives and works in Hong Kong. Effectively the grandfather and two sons are living off the benefits of NZ taxpayers and taking up limited educational and health system capacity, while the mother pays tax off shore.

Not sure about rest of NZ but this is very common practice in Auckland where one or both parents live and work overseas and so NZ Inc gets no income. They are effectively rorting the system (although not illegal) and will most likely return here just to retire when their need costs go up.

I’m not sure why NZ allows this and its especially prevalent amongst Chinese

      To be deemed a NZ tax resident one doesn’t actually need to live in NZ full year. Apart from the residency test, the IRD decides whether such a person has an “enduring relationship with NZ”, such as social links, personal links, economic links and so on. If deemed so, such an individual is liable for tax on the income earned world-wide.

    Family moves to NZ and does bare minimum to gain citizenship. As soon as citizenship is granted at least one or both parents move back to their home country to run their existing businesses while kids live here leveraging off the State. Kids go through school and University paid for by taxpayer. Kids graduate and then take off to Australia or further afield. Parents eventually move back when they want to retire and once again receive taxpayer benefits
    
    I’m just raising that our economy is fragile and we can’t afford this behaviour and it’s not an isolated incident

      There is a lot going on here.
      
      1. School zoning was always a bad idea. It should be rolled back gradually so as not to crash property values. Won’t happen of course.
      
      2. University should be funded by loans with any government contribution in the form of future tax rebates. So if you go overseas to work you owe the full amount, but no effective change if you stay here. Unarguably an improvement.
      
      3. Super should be in proportion to time spent living in NZ between age 18 and 65. Also won’t happen as it could be killed by one news story about some destitute retiree who is has never exercised an ounce of personal responsibility in their entire life.
      
      But I’m not sure what solution you are suggesting for kids who are NZ citizens and go to school here but parents pay tax elsewhere.

        In Christchurch, Sumner through to Heathcote is zoned for Linwood or Aranui which are both low decile. I know one parent who sends her kids to those schools – most go across town for private schools, take advantage of divorced parents living in a better zone, try the ballot for a better school, or last resort, they move to cashmere (still a hill suburb but with a good school). And you know – why should t they want better for their kids than drug dealing in the playground and maorification of everything?

Last evening I watched Newshub and concluded that it is possible that I feel sorry for Amelia Wade.
She had got up before dawn, by many hours to catch an Aeroplane to Melbourne, with Luxon as she calls him, for a free bee return flight.
She was many hours later giving her spiel standing on the tarmac at Wellington Airport as she said some 12 hours later and no flight.
She showed her frustration and what a bad tempered, rude so called media person she was.
As I expect that this would have been her last free bee shopping trip.
Naturally she shakily in the cold, expressed her sad role with the knowledge that she will be redundant in some 90 days, and it was because her employers lost money, principally, but lost advertising revenue and you wonder why when represented by such a presumed prima donna.
I think I felt sorry for her, in the cold day, in the open, at Wellington Airport – nothing more.

So ‘weary’ journalists (according to Laura Walter at Newsroom) finally went home after a whole day sitting around waiting for the Air Force plane to take off, stuffing themselves on free food and snacks, courtesy of the taxpayer. Imagine the field day they’d have had if it had been MPs lazing round.
Perhaps commercial flights for our PM will end the rort of freebies for the media on overseas trips. One seat for one representative from the press pool from now on!

Spin artists always use words like could, may, might, possibly…. 80,000 people might die.

So the sea ice pattern changed this year. If you looked up sea temperatures in any year, they may have yearly variations, but they follow an average which does not change. And even decades long variations usually follow cycles as well.

If the dolts in that article actually looked that up, they would see the annual variations and exceptions. And they would also see the Tongan volcano as impacting global sea temperatures in the last few months.

It is rather like predicting that NZ roads will be gridlocked within 6 months because of an alarming increase in traffic, and massively increased traffic delays. All caused by measuring the increase in vehicles and increased traffic delays over the last 48 hours on South Island roads, and extrapolating the increases over 6 months.

Said increase of traffic caused by fans driving to Dunedin to the Pink concert. And traffic delays caused by multiple ongoing road works, on State Highway 1.

In all the media chatter about the “broken down” air force 757’s and their berating of politicians for not replacing them, they seem to be missing a couple of salient facts.

Firstly numbers count – the rules of 3 again in the military. So we have one 757 “broken down” in Wellington. The air force’s second 757 isn’t available for backup as it is undertaking scheduled maintenance. But any prudent government would have at least 3 such aircraft (except for cheapskate NZ governments of course). This allows the air force to have 2 jets available when the third is undertaking maintenance.

Secondly there is an exception to this rule which is when you have a backup system in place. Take the Australian air force, although they do have two (leased) Boeing 737’s as their primary VIP aircraft, they also have 3 Dassault Falcon jets which are also capable of trans-tasman and Pacific air travel (like the 737’s). They also have an Airbus KC-30 fitted out for VIP work (think of the KC-30 as being a much larger and more capable version of the 757’s). They also have several other KC-30’s as troop transport, cargo and air-to-air refueling so there are backups if required.

Typical NZ (Govt’s) do it on the cheap with no 3rd aircraft and no backup aircraft systems. Suggest NZ look at the Aussie examples and mimic something similar (although slightly down-scaled for our situation).

True fact: In 2016 National planned to replaced the 757’s about now. But Labour in 2019 extended that out by another 5 years until the late 2020’s. Meanwhile National looks bad because they claim there is no money available to replace them (at the moment) because of the “cost of living crisis”.

Suggest that National needs to stop banging on about “cost of living crises” when it comes to not funding these sorts of issues in the news lately (eg 757’s or Premier House etc). We are not a third-world nation (well not yet anyway).

National (and ACT and NZF) need to talk about “smart investment”, not cost cutting or “cost of living crises” preventing them doing anything, because although Labour caused the problem in the first place with their excessive borrowing and spending, Labour and the Team of $55m is framing the coalition as being out of touch by slashing and burning etc.

People want to hear positive news (like the roads of national significance plans this week) not excuses about cost cutting, nor Labour’s negative slants (showing again Labour are “good” at criticising but not good on a positive vision that moves the country forward).

C’mon National, ACT, NZF, you know you got this!

    Look to Sydney. Rent controls from the 1940s to the 70s saw most of inner Sydney turned into crime ridden slums – Darlinghurst, Kings Cross, Newtown, Redfern etc. You literally could not park a car in Darlinghurst without a guard or you holden would be stripped. Rent controls ended in the 70’s by the 80s inner Sydney was what it should always have been. Well, a lot better than the burnt out dump it was. London the same. Plenty of evidence to be found all over the place.

How many people listened to the CEO of the Hurricanes, Avan Lee, being interviewed by the Hosk this morning?

The radicalised haka aimed at everyone who didn’t vote for Liemore and the maori lot as well as the Watermelons, was “unfortunate”. Sounds to me as though the governing body and the senior management of this lot need to take a good look at themselves. Then terminate the contracts of the rabble.

  Maybe time for the RFU to reassess the purpose and ethics of the haka in general.

    If I was the CEO of the franchise, this captain and main rabble rouser of the team would have been in front of my desk asap. This is a chilling story, while the police appear not to be over interested in crimes such as shoplifting, burglary, etc. they are putting what appears considerable effort in setting a precedent for lawfare against people who are prosecuted under OSH law. I would expect an extension of this to Environment, Employment, and DIE if the prosecution is successful.

  OK, to be fair, the victim impact statement is supposed to be the victim explaining to the perp what the impact of the offending was.
  
  The crossed out stuff was complaining about police procedures etc. While it is valid stuff to raise, it should be raised elsewhere and it does not belong in a victim impact statement.

  I once worked as a journalist for Radio NZ, but gave up listening to the State network long ago. However, in those days the newsreader only read what was provided by the journalists, never wrote it him/herself. I don’t know whether the practice has changed, but if not, then your nasty newsreader is not guilty of this infraction, Maggie. (Can’t answer for any other infringements made by said newsreader.)

It’s time to get aggressive homeless people with mental health issues off the streets and into a safe and secure environment where they can receive care and attention to their needs.

It’s not fair to let them roam the streets , threatening people and also getting upset themselves that people don’t want to interact with them.

It’s also not fair on people, who are not trained to deal with mental health or violent homeless people, but are expected to put up with it.

Give the aggressive homeless an environment where they have staff looking after them and their needs. Sure let them out into the community but with supervision. But let them have a warm and secure place to stay and sleep and be fed.

I say this because of a homeless person with mental health issues trying to take (sexual) advantage of a friend of mine who happened to be cornered in a building (until someone else came in).

I also say this because of an incident I came across where a homeless person with mental health issues started screaming and threatening a diminutive Asian (international) student who just happened to walk past the homeless man. The student was visibly distressed and wanted to leave the country.

Having the aggressive homeless wander about, setting themselves up in shop fronts, lying around the pavement, sometimes demanding money does themselves and society no good. Boundaries are needed, again.

“Brownlee said the per-square metre rate that MBIE had put to Parliamentary Service was excessive.

I don’t support the school lunch programme, in its current form, because this is the state intruding too deeply in the role of parents.

If our goal is to have a nation of independent, resourceful, practical people standing on their own two feet then, as much as possible, our political parties should not advance policies where the state replaces the proper function of parents.

Equally, if it is deemed a right and proper thing that the state feed kids their lunches Monday to Friday, then why stop there? Why not on weekends too? What about breakfasts? What about their dinners? Why doesn’t the state take on the role of clothing all kids? Of taking them away for school holidays? For ensuring they have a holiday overseas every few years?

Where should the line be drawn?

Where we do have a situation where parents or caregivers are unwilling or unable to equip their kids with a school lunch I would rather those families opt into a state programme where they can pickup a box of groceries from their supermarket once a week containing that sufficient to provide lunches for however many kids need them for that family.

Hell, we can even deliver it to them once a week if that is what it takes.

The advantage of this is that it allows the parents to continue to discharge their responsibility to their children, rather than just give up and hand it over to the state – and gain the personal satisfaction that comes from that.

Where this doesn’t work and, notwithstanding the grocery boxes, children are still going to school without lunches well then that would prove that it isn’t poverty behind it, as many would have us believe, it is parental neglect and clearly other actions or interventions are needed.

    Handing out lunches doesn’t ‘fix’ anything – it merely papers over the cracks.
    
    Here’s a bold assertion – I reckon that the bulk of parents not supplying their kids with lunches aren’t doing it because they have inadequate resources. It’s because they either prioritise other things with their spending or they just don’t care to.
    
    Anyway, that aside, if you read my piece I’m not saying that the kids should go without. I’m saying deliver the household a grocery box with sufficient for lunches for the week. When the family are back on their feet then they’ve got lunch-making skills for life. And the kids have the memories of their parents making them their school lunches.

  I was responsible for my own lunch and breakfast from 7 years old. If I didn’t make and take lunch, I went without. As I left for high school just after 7 am, I didnt bother with breakfast or lunch for my 5 years of secondary school, I just ate when I got home after sport at 6, then had dinner.

It’s funny, when I find myself in a position of responsibility in an organisation, I wouldn’t dream of using that position to advance my own political viewpoints and especially where there is a risk my doing so would reflect badly on the organisation.

While I’m in that position, in that organisation, the interest of the organisation comes first and my interests just don’t come into it.

My interests are put in a box never to be seen.

Of course, what I do in my personal life is a different matter. In my personal life I am free to do and say as I think appropriate.

How interesting it is therefore that the Hurricane women cannot see or understand this distinction – or perhaps they can see it but chose to wilfully disregard it.

Interesting that even though they were representing their club they chose to allow their personal views to override their consideration for their club. They chose to put their interests above club interests.

“Oh, Hurricanes ticket sales are down 50% since our little stunt? We don’t care! It’s our right as Wahine Toa to say what we think! Don’t you try to oppress us!”

Isn’t this illustrative of the left’s great march through our institutions – and then using their positions in our institutions to advance their personal and political interests.

It seems to be a real lefty thing, doesn’t it? You never see righties doing it.

Just pondering on the need for the coalition or should I say more likely National, to go hard on the wokeness in government departments and agencies in the capital and purge the race based daily prayers, woke naming conventions, Treaty based policy advice we read about in another thread today, whether it applies or not, it’s all that crap that makes for a fertile ground for radicalisation as we see the Hurricanes female rugby team.

I know you have been busy doing lots of good work with the 100 day plan but time is slipping away for you to keep the confidence of a lot of your voters. There is plenty of low hanging fruit for you to pick in your departments.

If you don’t start doing so, David Seymour is going to have a very good election in 2027.

My rates rise at Tauranga council last year was about 15%, the previous 5 years the increases have been around 20% per year. That was because of either changes in their rating system , increases in property value — there was always some justification made by the council.

This year, average rates rises are 15.8%…. although mine will be closer to 20% because they only quote ‘average’ .

I haven’t had a sub 10% rates increase less for probably a decade ….

It makes me laugh when some Hamiltonian or Wellingtonian complains about a one off big jump in rates, when mine were fairly reasonable back in 2010, but, will now be approaching 14k a year.

  Turns out that the world has changed from a time when families would gather around the TV and watch the news, or indeed any programme, together.
  
  The idea of simply waiting for a programme to be played on the broadcaster’s schedule is disappearing. TV channels with fixed schedules seem as old-fashioned as a VHS player.
  
  The world has moved on. Broadcast television needs to as well, and the people who have been comfortably ensconced there may just need to take a look at the realities of life. People have more choices than just TV1 or TV2 these days.

Been out to Westhaven today admiring the Squaddies new youth training fleet. Thanks ETNZ.
Apparently the koha sought to bless the fleet was $5k a boat. So guess what, no blessing. Given that a couple of distant relatives have been bishops of Sydney and, oddly enough, Eastern Zambia respectively I felt that I should offer my services to bless the fleet for a couple of peroni’s and a toasted sarnie. The offer is being considered so I best find the dog collar.
And then I see Eke Panuku are rebuilding (channelling Canute if you ask me) the northern seawall at westhaven to protect buildings and marina infrastructure from king tides and storm surges. Apparently representatives of 4 Iwi turned up to bless the rebuild this morning. My source told me the police had to be called to keep the peace as an unseemly scuffle was in prospect.
I suggested to the Squaddie that it should ask Eke Panuku for a volunteer from senior management to be sacrificed, ala burning man, to ensure the project is completed on time and within budget. I dont think they thought i was serious.
